Cross-compatibility within and among populations of the perennialEriastrum densifolium was investigated to determine if sterility barriers have evolved within this polytypic species, and to correlate any such barriers to previously known patterns of genetic and morphological variation. Furthermore, the reproductive affinities of the endangeredE. densifolium subsp.sanctorum are investigated. Results indicate that no single population or group of populations is reproductively isolated from all other populations, and that F1 hybrids are fully fertile. Interspecific crosses (withE. eremicum andE. sapphirinum) were largely unsuccessful. The endangeredE. densifolium subsp.sanctorum demonstrates high interfertility with all other populations.  相似文献

Techniques of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis were employed to estimate levels of genetic variation within and genetic differentiation among populations of the three Florida subspecies of Helianthus debilis. The subspecies are H. d. debilis, H. d. vestitus, and H. d. tardiflorus. These taxa are very similar with respect to levels of genetic variability. The average values across all populations for proportion of polymorphic loci (25.5%) and number of alleles per polymorphic locus (2.35) are comparable to those found in other outcrossing plants. The average frequency of heterozygotes per locus (0.05) is lower than that found in other outcrossers. Local populations within each subspecies are genetically very similar. The average genetic distance between local populations is D = 0.010 ± 0.001. Subspecies vestitus and subspecies tardiflorus are also genetically very similar (D = 0.015 ± 0.001). However, subspecies debilis is differentiated from both subspecies vestitus (D = 0.121 ± 0.006) and subspecies tardiflorus (D = 0.103 ± 0.005). This genetic differentiation parallels morphological differentiation. The average genetic distance among all three subspecies is D = 0.080 ± 0.003. A moderate amount of genetic differentiation accompanies the process of subspeciation in Helianthus debilis.  相似文献

Structural variation in acoustic signals may be related either to the factors affecting sound production such as bird morphology, or to vocal adaptations to improve sound transmission in different environments. Thus, variation in acoustic signals can influence intraspecific communication processes. This will ultimately influence divergence in allopatric populations. The study of geographical variation in vocalizations of suboscines provides an opportunity to compare acoustic signals from different populations, without additional biases caused by song learning and cultural evolution typical of oscines. The aim of this study was to compare vocalizations of distinct populations of a suboscine species, the Thorn‐tailed Rayadito. Four types of vocalizations were recorded in five populations, including all three currently accepted subspecies. Comparisons of each type of vocalization among the five populations showed that some variation existed in the repetitive trill, whereas no differences were found among alarm calls and loud trills. Variation in repetitive trills among populations and forest types suggests that sound transmission is involved in vocal differences in suboscines. Acoustic differences are also consistent with distinguishing subspecies bullocki from spinicauda and fulva, but not the two latter subspecies from each other. Our results suggest that the geographical differentiation in vocalizations observed among Thorn‐tailed Rayadito populations is likely to be a consequence of different ecological pressures. Therefore, incipient genetic isolation of these populations is suggested, based on the innate origin of suboscine vocalizations.  相似文献

Breeding redpoll finches (Aves: Carduelinae) show extensive plumage and size variability and, in many cases, a plumage polymorphism that is not related to age or sex. This has been ascribed to extreme phenotypic variation within a single taxon or to moderate variability within distinct taxa coupled with hybridization. The predominant view favors the recognition of two largely sympatric species: Carduelis flammea, comprised of four well-marked subspecies—flammea, cabaret, islandica, and rostrata; and C. hornemanni, comprised of two subspecies—hornemanni and exilipes. We studied representative samples of these putative subspecies (except islandica) for variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Using 20 informative restriction enzymes that recognized 124 sites (642 base pairs [bp] of sequence or ≈ 3.7% of the molecule), we identified 17 RFLP haplotypes in the 31 individuals surveyed. The haplotypes formed a simple phylogenetic network with most clones diverging by a single site difference from a common haplotype found in almost half of the individuals. Within populations and taxa, levels of mtDNA diversity were similar to those observed in other avian species. The pattern of mtDNA divergence among populations was statistically unrelated to their geographic or traditional taxonomic relationships, and the estimated distance between the two traditionally recognized species was very small relative to those typically observed among avian sister species.  相似文献

Electrohoretically detectable enetic variation for 29 kinds of blood protein encoded by 33 loci was analyzed for 78 Asian eletants (Elephas maximus) which were collected from its four local populations: Sri Lanka, Souti India, Thailand and Nepal. Elehants in Sri Lanka are classified into the subspecies E.m. maximus, and those from the other tlree localities into the subspecies E. m. indicus. Six variable loci were detected, and one of them, the tetrazolium oxidase locus, was observed to show a complete allele substitution between the subspecies. Average heterozgosity within local populations were in a range of 0.0152 ? 0.0303. Whereas the Nei's genetic distance among three local populations of the subspecies indicus were 0.0013 ? 0.0031, the distance between the subspecies indicus and maximus were 0.0328 ? 0.0370, indicating that the two subspecies were well differentiated genetically.  相似文献

The nectar-sugar compositions of 338 individuals from 27 populations in two subspecies of Ipomopsis longiflora from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Chihuahua were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Mean sucrose compositions of populations ranged from 73.2% to 91.9%, and the standard deviations ranged from 1.9% to 9.1%. Pairs and aggregates of populations were statistically compared. The nectar-sugar compositions of the two subspecies were significantly different as aggregates. Subspecies australis averaged 9.5% fructose, 7.9% glucose, and 82.6% sucrose while subspecies longiflora averaged 7.8% fructose, 5.7% glucose, and 86.5% sucrose. Each subspecies was found to have two groups of populations. Groups of higher sucrose populations were found along the contact zone of the subspecies; away from the contact zone both subspecies had groups of lower sucrose populations. The data show that significant variability exists in this biochemical character, and the pattern of variation is clearly related to the geographic distribution of the populations. The genetic and selective mechanisms involved are unknown.  相似文献

Morphometric relationships between populations ofPapaver radicatum within the southern Norwegian mountains were investigated using canonical variates analysis andWard's clustering on capsule and leaf character sets. The survey describes patterns of variation among 13 wild-scored populations from five geographically disjunct localities, usually assigned to five races or subspecies. Our results from wild-collected material largely support earlier findings based on univariate statistics on cultivated material. In general, populations from within a disjunct locality (=subspecies) are most similar to other populations from the same locality. However, the subspecies vary in the degree to which they are differentiated in capsule morphology. The subsp.groevudalense populations are morphologically close to the main group of subsp.ovatilobum populations. Subspp.intermedium andoeksendalense are clearly distinct from one another and from the other subspecies, whereas the single subsp.gjaerevolli population is more similar to theovatilobum/groevudalense complex. Variation in leaf characters showed only partial congruence with variation in capsule characters. The pattern of morphological relationships among the subspecies is thus more complex than previously thought. The subspecies may have become differentiated during a period of isolation, but such results alone cannot indicate the duration of such a period.  相似文献

Biometrical variability of foliage, cones, and seeds were analyzed in 8 native populations (throughout the range) of a relictual species,Cupressus bakeri Jeps. (Cupressaceae) from California and Oregon. The partition of variation within and among populations for this rare plant was investigated and the justification for subspecies status was reviewed. Morphological characters varied significantly, with more of the variation among populations than at the population level. Multivariate analyses indicated close affinities among populations on serpentine sites suggesting the presence of a serpentine race. However, the high degree of variation among populations did not permit their clear separation into the two subspecies described byWolf (1948). We conclude thatC. bakeri should be treated as a monotypic species.  相似文献

Aim To examine the phylogeography and population structure of three dung beetle species of the genus Trypocopris (Coleoptera, Geotrupidae). We wanted to test whether genetic differences and genealogies among populations were in accordance with morphologically described subspecies and we aimed to establish times of divergence among subspecies to depict the appropriate temporal framework of their phylogeographical differentiation. We also wished to investigate the historical demographic events and the relative influences of gene flow and drift on the distribution of genetic variability of the different populations. Location Europe (mostly Italy). Methods We collected adult males from dung pats from 15 Italian localities over the period 2000–2002. For sequence analysis, some dried specimens from Albania, Croatia, Slovakia and Spain were also used. We applied cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial DNA sequencing and the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique to determine whether phylogeographical patterns within the three species support the proposed hypotheses of subspecies designations, and to detect further structure among populations that might mediate diversification. Results and main conclusions The results show a high concordance between the distribution of mtDNA variation and the main morphological groups recognized as subspecies, which thus may represent independent evolutionary units. The degree of mitochondrial divergence suggests that speciation events occurred during the Pliocene, while diversification of the main subspecific lineages took place in the Pleistocene, from c. 0.3 to 1.5 Ma. Mitochondrial and nuclear data also reveal that there is phylogeographical structuring among populations within each of the main groups and that both contemporary and historical processes determined this pattern of genetic structure. Geographical populations form monophyletic clades in both phylogenetic and network reconstructions. Despite the high levels of intrapopulational diversity, FST values indicate moderate but significant genetic differentiation among populations, and a Bayesian clustering analysis of the AFLP data clearly separates the geographical populations. Nucleotide and gene diversity estimates reveal interspecific differences in the degree of diversification among populations that may be related to the different ecological requirements of the three species.  相似文献

China is one of the largest centers of genetic diversity of Oryza sativa L. in the world. Using a genetically representative primary core collection of 3,024 rice landraces in China, we analyzed the genetic structure and intraspecific differentiation of O. sativa, and the directional evolution of SSR. The genetic structure was investigated by model-based structure analysis and construction of neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree. Comparison between genetic structure and predefined populations according to Ting’s taxonomic system revealed a hierarchical genetic structure: two distinct subspecies, each with three ecotypes and different numbers of geo-ecogroups within each ecotype. Two subspecies evidently resulted from adaptation to different environments. The different cropping systems imposed on the subspecies led to further differentiation, but the variation within each subspecies resulted from different causes. Indica, under tropical-like or lowland-like environments, exhibited clear differentiation among seasonal ecotypes, but not among soil-watery ecotypes; and japonica showed clear differences between soil water regime ecotypes, but not among seasonal ecotypes. Chinese cultivated rice took on evident directional evolution in microsatellite allele size at several aspects, such as subspecies and geographical populations. Japonica has smaller allele sizes than indica, and this may partly be the result of their different domestication times. Allele size was also negatively correlated with latitude and altitude, and this may be interpreted by different mutation rates, selection pressures, and population size effects under different environments and cropping systems.  相似文献

Abstract

Confirmation of the occurrence of the moss Ptychomnion densifolium on the main islands of New Zealand is provided and the features which separate it from the more common P. aciculare are outlined. A brief account of the history of P. densifolium in New Zealand is given and its morphology there is discussed. A key to the two species in New Zealand is provided and habitat differences between them outlined. New Zealand material differs from type locality (Tristan d' Acunha) material in having longer and more twisted acumens, and in this respect is similar to New Zealand material of P. aciculare. New Zealand populations of P. densifolium are recognisable in having stem leaves reflexed from an oblong sheathing base, and well developed basal leaf plications. It is a relatively widespread species in New Zealand, occurring in mostly upper elevation, open sites.  相似文献

In a study of intra- and interpopulation variation in seed glucosinolates, remarkable uniformity was found among individuals within the two chemically distinct subspecies of East Coast Cakile edentula. Glucosinolates were used as taxonomic markers in a study of hybridization between ssp. edentula and ssp. harperi where they form mixed populations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Thirteen plants with hybrid chemical profiles were detected in a sample of 89 individuals from four populations; the zone of hybridization is narrow, and has persisted for at least eight years. Artificial hybrids of the two subspecies are additive for kinds and intermediate for proportions of seed glucosinolates, and families of F2's show a range of recombinant chemical profiles. Natural hybridization was confirmed by recovering hybrid and parental types in 47 progeny of three presumptive wild hybrids. Glucosinolate profile characteristics segregated independently of the segregation patterns for fruit length and seed weight. Selection against particular glucosinolate phenotypes is one possible mechanism maintaining this narrow hybrid zone on the Outer Banks.  相似文献

Current divergent selection may promote floral trait differentiation among conspecific populations in flowering plants. However, whether this applies to complex traits such as colour or scents has been little studied, even though these traits often vary within species. In this study, we compared floral colour and odour as well as selective pressures imposed upon these traits among seven populations belonging to three subspecies of the widespread, generalist orchid Anacamptis coriophora. Colour was characterized using calibrated photographs, and scents were sampled using dynamic headspace extraction and analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. We then quantified phenotypic selection exerted on these traits by regressing fruit set values on floral trait values. We showed that the three studied subspecies were characterized by different floral colour and odour, with one of the two predominant floral volatiles emitted by each subspecies being taxon‐specific. Plant size was positively correlated with fruit set in most populations, whereas we found no apparent link between floral colour and female reproductive success. We detected positive selection on several taxon‐specific compounds in A. coriophora subsp. fragrans, whereas no selection was found on floral volatiles of A. coriophora subsp. coriophora and A. coriophora subsp. martrinii. This study is one of the first to document variation in phenotypic selection exerted on floral scents among conspecific populations. Our results suggest that selection could contribute to ongoing chemical divergence among A. coriophora subspecies.  相似文献

Dioecy, the separation of sexes, has arisen independently many times in the course of angiosperm evolution. Avoidance of inbreeding is clearly involved in the evolution of dioecy, and as a consequence we predict that dioecious populations should maintain higher levels of genetic variation than closely related nondioecious populations. We tested that prediction by comparing allozymic variation in two closely related taxa, the monoecious and dioecious subspecies of the Mediterranean cucurbit, Ecballium elaterium. Thirteen polymorphic loci were screened for seeds sampled from 10 monoecious and 13 dioecious populations spanning the geographic ranges of the subspecies in Spain. The dioecious subspecies showed strikingly greater allelic diversity and heterozygosity than the monoecious subspecies. A hierarchical F-statistic analysis clearly demonstrated considerable genetic variation within populations for the dioecious populations, whereas for the monoecious populations almost all genetic variation resulted from differences among populations. The general pattern of homozygosity within monoecious populations suggests that they are highly inbred. In order to assess historical influences on current patterns of genetic variation, we conducted a genetic-distance analysis. The observed relationship between genetic distance and geographic distance between populations supports the hypothesis that the subspecies' current allopatric distributions on the Iberian Peninsula are the result of separate waves of colonization from the north (monoecious) and south (dioecious).  相似文献

Summary Plastid and mitochondrial DNAs from Hedysarum species of the western Mediterranean basin, H. spinosissimum ssp eu-spinosissimum, H. spinosissimum ssp capitatum, H. carnosum, H. coronarium and H. flexuosum, were compared by restriction endonuclease fragment analysis. ctDNA fragment patterns for ssp eu-spinosissimum and ssp capitatum were indistinguishable in different enzyme digests. An identical ctDNA variation was found in Hpa II digests with two Sardinian populations of ssp capitatum. Each of the two subspecies was characterized by specific mt DNA patterns with Pst I, Bam HI, Sma I and EcoRI. No variation was detected in populations of different geographical origins for a given subspecies. H. carnosum, H. coronarium and H. flexuosum generated specific ct and mt DNA patterns. Comparison of mitochondrial fragments indicated: — a strong homology between the two subspecies, — a closer homology among the three other diploids, each being closer to the other two than to H. spinosissimum subspecies — as was also the case for the plastid genomes.  相似文献

The redshank (Tringa totanus) is declining throughout Europe and to implement efficient conservation measures, it is important to obtain information about the population genetic structure. The aim of the present study was two-fold. First, we analysed the genetic variation within and between populations in the Baltic region in southern Scandinavia. Evidence of genetic structure would suggest that different populations might require separate management strategies. Second, in an attempt to study large-scale genetic structure we compared the Baltic populations with redshanks from northern Scandinavia and Iceland. This analysis could reveal insights into phylogeography and long-term population history. DNA samples were collected from six breeding sites in Scandinavia presumed to include two subspecies (totanus and britannica) and a further sample from Iceland (subspecies robusta). Two methods were used to study the population genetic structure. Domain II and III of the mitochondrial control region was analysed by DNA sequencing and nuclear DNA was analysed by screening amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Mitochondrial DNA showed no variation between individuals in domain II. When analysing an 481 bp fragment of domain III seven haplotypes were found among birds. On the basis of mtDNA sequences, redshanks showed some evidence of a recent expansion from a bottlenecked refugial population. Bayesian analyses of AFLP data revealed a significant genetic differentiation between suggested subspecies but not between populations within the Baltic region. Our results indicate that populations of redshanks in Europe constitute at least three separate management units corresponding to the recognised subspecies.  相似文献

The spatial scale over which genetic divergences occur between populations and the extent that they are paralleled by morphological differences can vary greatly among marine species. In the present study, we use a hierarchical spatial design to investigate genetic structure in Heliocidaris erythrogramma occurring on near shore limestone reefs in Western Australia. These reefs are inhabited by two distinct subspecies: the thick‐spined Heliocidaris erythrogramma armigera and the thin‐spined Heliocidaris erythrogramma erythrogramma, each of which also have distinct colour patterns. In addition to pronounced morphological variation, H. erythrogramma exhibits a relatively short (3–4 days) planktonic phase before settlement and metamorphosis, which limits their capacity for dispersal. We used microsatellite markers to determine whether patterns of genetic structure were influenced more by morphological or life history limitations to dispersal. Both individual and population‐level analyses found significant genetic differentiation between subspecies, which was independent of geographical distance. Genetic diversity was considerably lower within H. e. erythrogramma than within H. e. armigera and genetic divergence was four‐fold greater between subspecies than among populations within subspecies. This pattern was consistent even at fine spatial scales (< 5 km). We did detect some evidence of gene flow between the subspecies; however, it appears to be highly restricted. Within subspecies, genetic structure was more clearly driven by dispersal capacity, although weak patterns of isolation‐by‐distance suggest that there may be other factors limiting gene exchange between populations. Our results show that spatial patterns of genetic structure in Western Australian H. erythrogramma is influenced by a range of factors but is primarily correlated with the distribution of morphologically distinct subspecies. I review the distribution of genus Alouattain the Marajó Archipelago based on geographic variation of pelage color patterns. Specific differences exist among the labeled specimens at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, which are confirmed via new field information from wild populations. The animals from Marajó, Caviana, and Mexiana Islands possess color patterns of Alouatta belzebul,while Alouatta seniculusis confirmed as the species that inhabits Gurupá Island. The high variability of pelage coloration of the animals from Marajó, Caviana, and Mexiana Islands includes all phenotypes formerly designated as different subspecies. The howler populations from these three islands belong to the same subspecies as those populations that inhabit the region of Tucurui dam reservoir (area 4). Finally, it seems that, as also suggested by chromosome studies, A. belzebulprobably comprises different epiphenotypes without taxonomic validity.  相似文献

Scaphinotus petersi Roeschke, 1907 (Carabidae) is a ground beetle endemic to Sky Islands in south‐eastern Arizona. Previous taxonomic studies described several subspecies with morphological differences inhabiting geographically isolated mountain ranges. We combined molecular sequence data and morphometric data, especially head and pronotum shape analyses, to examine the variation and divergence in subspecies and isolated montane populations. In this study, we employ a combination of distance morphometrics as well as geometric morphometrics to quantify the level of morphological variation, and to test the hypothesis that geographically distinct populations of S. petersi are phenotypically distinct. Results suggest that these isolated populations have diverged morphologically and genetically. Phylogenetic analyses identified two monophyletic lineages within the species that correspond generally to pronotum shape. We observed significant morphological variation among most montane populations in of S. petersi, with the pronotum shape as the clearest delimiting trait. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The severity of inbreeding depression appears to vary among taxa, but few ecological or other patterns have been identified that predict accurately which taxa are most sensitive to inbreeding. To examine the causes of heterogeneity in inbreeding depression, the effects of inbreeding on reproduction, survival, and growth were measured in three replicate experimental stocks for each of three subspecies of Peromyscus polionotus mice. Inbreeding of the dam reduced the probability of breeding, the probability of producing a second litter, and litter size. Inbreeding of the litter caused depression of litter size, juvenile viability, and mass at weaning, and caused an increase in the within-litter variance in mass. In spite of differences between the subspecies in natural population sizes, genetic variation, and mean rates of reproduction and survival, all variation observed between experimental populations in their responses to inbreeding could be attributed to random founder effects. The genetic load of deleterious alleles in each replicate was unequally partitioned among its founder pairs, and different founders contributed to the load affecting different fitness components. Thus, inbreeding depression for any one fitness component, in our experimental environment, must be due to relatively few deleterious alleles with major effects. Genetic loads so comprised would be expected to diverge among natural populations due to both random drift and selective removal of recessive deleterious alleles during population bottlenecks. The near universality of inbreeding depression would be maintained, however, if different alleles contribute to inbreeding depression of different fitness components and in different environments.  相似文献
