Flowering plants often exhibit declining resource investment to floral organs, fruits and seeds temporally or spatially in an inflorescence. To account for such variances, non‐uniform pollination hypothesis, which highlights various mating environments each flower experiences, provides adaptive significance for allocation patterns but with controversial supports. Sagittaria trifolia (Alismataceae) was used to examine differences in seed number, seed weight and germination rate among sequential fruits within inflorescences. Ovule number was also investigated to evaluate allocation patterns in the floral stage. To test the non‐uniform pollination hypothesis, we used three polymorphic microsatellite loci of S. trifolia to estimate the seed outcrossing rate in proximal and distal fruits. The results showed that the seed number, average seed weight and seed germination rate of S. trifolia gradually decreased from proximal to distal fruits within inflorescences. The percent of decrease in seed number between two contiguous fruits was 14.68 ± 3.22%, which was much stronger than the percent of decrease in ovule number at 6.95 ± 1.60%. Both proximal and distal fruits within inflorescences had high outcrossing rates (81.5 ± 5.0%, proximal; 82.3 ± 6.9%, distal) and they did not differ significantly. Overall, there was an acropetal decline of resource allocation to fruits within inflorescences of S. trifolia. Allocation pattern to ovules was not a limiting factor for seed production. The lack of difference in outcrossing rate between proximal and distal fruits indicated that the allocation strategy was probably not caused by non‐uniform pollination, but more likely position effects.  相似文献

In this study, we sought to determine if Phaseolus coccineus normally aborts potentially viable seeds, and whether seed abortion is nonrandom with respect to progeny vigor. The ovaries of Phaseolus coccineus typically have six linearly arranged ovules. The three ovule positions at the stylar end are more likely to mature seeds than the three ovules at the basal end of the ovary. When we destroyed the developing ovules at the stylar end of the fruit after fertilization but before seed abortion, there was a significant increase in the probability that the ovules in the three basal positions would produce a mature seed. The probability of seed maturation in control fruits (no ovules destroyed) ranged from 38.3 to 42.7% over the three field seasons, whereas in the experimental fruits it ranged from 64.3 to 79.7% (similar to that of ovules at the stylar end in control fruits). We did not find any significant change in the probability of seed production in the three ovule positions in the stylar end of the ovary (the positions with high probability of seed maturation) when the basal ovules were experimentally destroyed. These results indicate that potentially viable seeds are regularly aborted in P. coccineus, with seed abortion more frequent in the basal ovule positions than at the stylar positions. In two greenhouse studies and one field study, we compared the vigor of progeny produced in the control fruits with the vigor of progeny produced in fruits where three ovules (either stylar or basal end) were destroyed. We found that the performance of the progeny from the three positions at the stylar end of the control fruits did not differ from the performance of the progeny from experimental fruits in which the three basal ovule positions were destroyed. In contrast, the progeny from the basal positions of the control fruits outperformed the progeny from the experimental fruits when the seeds were produced in the three basal ovules (stylar ovules destroyed). Our findings indicate that when the experimental treatment increased the probability of seed maturation, there was a significant decrease in the average vigor of the progeny in the remaining (basal) ovule positions.  相似文献

Seed weight varies significantly within and among fruits of wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum). To determine sources of this variation, we studied fertilization and seed development following controlled pollinations. Within fruits, central ovules were fertilized prior to distal ovules and attained greater seed size. Ninety-seven percent of the variation in mean seed wt per fruit was explained by an analysis of variance incorporating parental effects, pollination date, and the number of seeds per fruit. We document strong maternal effects on the number of ovules per ovary, the number of fertilized ovules per ovary, the number of seeds per fruit, and mean individual seed wt per fruit. Across females, pollen donor had a slight but significant effect on seed wt; no paternal effects on fertilization rate, zygote number, or seed number per fruit were detected. Within females, with one exception, pollen donor had no significant effect on these components of seed development. Stronger maternal main effects may be due to donor x recipient interactions, cytoplasmic factors, the genetic inequity within triploid endosperm, and/or strict maternal control over resource allocation. The large maternal effects relative to paternal effects may limit the rate at which natural selection acts on paternal traits expressed prior to seed maturation.  相似文献

Fruits of Rosaceae subfamily Maloideae are known as pomes, a fruit type unique to the Maloideae. Using light microscopy we examined the pomes of 173 species, broadly representing the taxonomic diversity of the subfamily. Significant variation occurs among pomes in retention, orientation, and texture of calyx lobes on the distal end of the fruit; density and distribution of sclereids in the flesh; heterogeneity among flesh parenchyma cells; carpel number and number of ovules per carpel; degree of connation among the carpels and adnation between ovary and hypanthium; and texture of the core. Phenetic clustering closely links congeneric fruits. Sorbus is a notable exception; fruits of the compound-leaved species form a cluster unrelated to fruits of the simple-leaved species. Fruits of Malus are also heteromorphic. Division of the Maloideae into two tribes, Crataegeae and Sorbeae, based largely on texture of the core is not substantiated. We hypothesize that the ancestral pome had five carpels, minimal connation of carpels, minimal adnation of ovaries to the hypanthium, two ovules per carpel, and a leathery core. Various adaptations for frugivore dispersal of the seeds partially explain trends in pome evolution.  相似文献

One of the hypotheses proposed for the abscission of flowersand fruits from the cowpea was that the oldest fruits at raceme1 on the peduncle monopolize the mobile nutrients availableto the whole inflorescence. Consequently, the distal young fruitsand flowers starve, abort, and are shed. This hypothesis wastested through autoradiographic studies of the distributionof 14C-assimilates on the cowpea inflorescence and the comparativegrowth of ovaries from persisting and abscising open flowersand young fruits. 14C-asaimilates were distributed to the fruits at raceme 1 andto flower buds, open flowers, and young fruits distal to raceme1. Therefore, the hypothesis that the fruits at raceme 1 monopolizethe mobile assimilates cannot be maintained. At the time of opening the persisting flowers of raceme 1 hadheavier ovaries than the aborting flowers of raceme 3 althoughboth types of flowers were visually alike. During the initial12 h following opening, the difference in ovary size was maintainedand often accentuated. The ovary of the persisting flower increasedin both fresh and dry weights. The growth of the ovary of theaborting flower was variable; the fresh weight often decreased,although it also increased in some experiments; the dry weightremained unchanged or decreased or increased remarkably. The availability of nutrients was considered to be of secondaryimportance in the chain of events leading to fruit abscission.Other internal factors which may control vital processes relatedto embryo development appear to be of primary, underlying importance.  相似文献

Plants of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cv. Olwen were grown in an open glasshouse maintained at a mean temperature of 20oC and ovule growth and seed production measured. Differences in the rate of growth of ovules within ovaries were observed as early as 2 days after pollination. Ovules reached a maximum size after 8 days with the smallest only half the size of the largest. After 8 days, the smallest ovules became flaccid and shrivelled. Ovule position within the ovary had little effect on the frequency of seed set and although there was an apparently higher probability that central ovules produced a seed than those nearer the peduncle or style this was not statistically significant. Inflorescence position and floret position on the inflorescence had a significant effect on the number of seeds per floret and seed weight; the first formed inflorescences and the first florets to be pollinated on each inflorescence had more seeds per floret and heavier seeds and fewer florets with no seed than later pollinated florets. There were also differences between florets within the same whorl. The role of a number of factors which may influence floret site utilisation are discussed.  相似文献

Within-bunch (inflorescence) variability in banana fruit weightis of great importance: distal fruits (at the bottom of thebunch) are 30 to 40% smaller than basal fruits at the top. Wehypothesize that this variability is related to a developmentallag between fruits. To validate this hypothesis, histologicalstudies (evolution in number of cells along the fruit radius,starch granule number and size) associated with physiologicalmeasurements (pulp dry weight, dry matter and starch concentration)were carried out. Fruit development stages were dated in cumulativedegree-days (dd) from flower emergence to 3 weeks after theharvest stage (1300 dd). For a fruit located at the top of thebunch, cell divisions ceased around 350 dd and cells began tofill with starch as soon as they appeared. A developmental lagbetween fruits at the top and bottom of the bunch was observed:cell divisions started and stopped approx. 70 dd later in bottom(distal) compared to top (basal) fruits. At the end of celldivisions, basal fruits had a higher number of cells along thefruit radius. This difference in cell number may be due to increasedcompetition for assimilates between fruits when cell divisionoccurs in distal fruits. Variability in cell number may be relatedto variability in pulp dry weight. We conclude that within-bunchvariability in banana fruit weight is related to a differencein cell number and age. Abstract Total seed yield per plant in one season was differentiated neither between Epimedium diphyllum and the E. grandiflorum complex ( E. grandiflorum and E. sempervirens ), nor between these two groups and one of their hybrid derived species, E. trifoliatobinatum . Total ovules per plant and seed-set rate per capsule ( SR ) did not vary greatly between these species, and seed weight ( SW ) was almost the same between them. The number of flowers per inflorescence ( F ) was also constant. However, the remaining reproductive component characters, ovule number per ovary ( O ) and inflorescence number per plant ( I ), were differentiated between the three taxa. These two characters were negatively correlated and a trade-off relationship occurred under the constant total seed yield (= O × F × I × SR × SW ). Ovule number per ovary was highly correlated with spur length of the flower. During the course of the hybrid speciation of E. trifoliatobinatum , selection pressure by pollinators on intermediate spur length seems to have favored plants with an intermediate ovule number. On the other hand, this selection pressure counteracted the increase of the inflorescence number under the trade-off. The resultant seed yield of E. trifoliatobinatum did not differ from that of the parental species, but the pattern of ovule allocation to ovaries (capsules) was altered.  相似文献

In this study we dissect the causes of variation in intra-inflorescence allocation in a sexually polymorphic species, Fragaria virginiana. We separated out the effects of resource competition during flowering from those of inflorescence architecture, as well as identified the effects of sex morph and genotype. We found position-based variation in petal length, ovule, pollen, and flower number to be influenced more by architecture than by our resource manipulations during flowering. We also found both genotype- and sex-specific intra-inflorescence patterns. Furthermore, our data indicate that the sex morph-specific intra-inflorescence patterns result from architectural modifications of the basic pattern. In fact, sex-differential intra-inflorescence patterns suggest that fitness through male and female function may be maximized by different resource distribution patterns within the inflorescence and may have been modified by past selection. Specifically, females invested heavily in ovules at positions where fruit set was most likely (primary and secondary), at the expense of flower number and allocation per flower at more distal positions. Whereas functional males invested minimally in ovules at all flower positions and produced the most abundantly flowered inflorescences, hermaphrodites, on the other hand, showed intermediate patterns, implying a compromise between sex functions. We suggest that consideration of intra-inflorescence allocation and inflorescence architecture may reveal the mechanism underlying sexual dimorphism in flower allocation and number.  相似文献

连续2a采用野外记录的方式对荒漠植物准噶尔无叶豆的结实、结籽格局进行了比较研究。结果表明:植株内花序生成格局表现为不同大小的花序在总花序中的比重与其结实率存在显著正相关,其中含有中等花数目的花序所占的比重及其结实率均最高,此种分布格局能够最大程度的保证繁殖成功;果序内果实生成格局表现为单花着生位置(从近柄端算起)与其结实量占总结实量的比例成线性负相关,花序基部的结实比例最高,顶部结实比例近为0;荚果内种子生成格局表现为:中间位置的胚珠败育率最低。另外,年际间荚果内仅有(1.08±0.03)粒和(1.07±0.03)粒种子能够完全成熟,此种结籽格局是准噶尔无叶豆保证后代质量的最佳策略。  相似文献

In Prunus mahaleb (Rosaceae), only a small proportion of those flowers that initially develop give rise to fruits, and the probability of producing fruit differs between flowers. The results of this study indicate that the probability of producing fruit is about 60% for the first (i.e., most proximal) flower to develop in each inflorescence, but very low for the last (i.e., most distal). This pattern is maintained regardless of between-inflorescence differences in flowering phenology, suggesting that each inflorescence can be viewed as an independent subunit with respect to allocation of resources for reproduction. These results are compatible with the ovary reserve and selective abortion hypotheses for the adaptive value of low fruit set in P. mahaleb.  相似文献

Summary Only one ovule matures into a seed inMelilotus officinalis. Although eight ovules form within an ovary, only the basal ovule develops into a mature seed, whereas the other ovules degenerate. The investigation of ovule and seed structure at different developmental stages and a comparison of quantitative characters of differently fated ovules within an ovary were undertaken by light, phase contrast, and fluorescence microscopy. In this species, campylotropous ovules develop simultaneously on marginal placentae in an apocarpous unilocular gynoecium. Megasporo- and megagametogenesis proceed normally and are completed in bud. The maturation of the Polygonum type embryo sac takes place after the flower opens. Shortly before fertilization, synergids show signs of degeneration in all ovules. At this stage, neither the structure nor the sizes of ovules within one ovary differ significantly. In spite of this, only the basal ovule develops into a seed. Rarely, one of the upper-situated ovules or the basal and another ovule mature into seeds. Seed enlargement is insignificant until the stage when globular embryo and nuclear endosperm are formed. At the seed-filling stage, other ovules have collapsed and the seed gradually comes to occupy the total volume of the pod. The fruit-to-seed length ratio decreases considerably during seed ripening. At fertilization, ovary length is four times greater than ovule length. In the mature state, the fruit and seed lengths are approximately equal. Seed size and weight diminish with an increase in seed number within a pod, although pod size remains constant. It is assumed that nonrandom abortion of young seeds inM. officinalis is under maternal control and is not related to structural abnormalities in ovule development or with limitation in pollen. We suppose that evolution of this species may have proceeded in the direction of a decrease in seed number and an increase in its sizes, which may play an important role in seed dispersal and seedling establishment.  相似文献

In the parthenocarpic fruit (pat) tomato mutant, parthenocarpy is associated with partial aberrations of stamens (shortness and carpelloidy) and ovules (defective integument growth) that contribute to impair seed set. However, these do not seem to be the only reasons for seed infertility because hand-pollination fails to restore seed set in ovaries where a fraction of the ovules are still morphologically normal. Therefore, it is conceivable that other unreported defects occur during the reproductive process in the mutant. In this research, we show that the mutation does not affect pollen or embryo sac development and viability, but generates sporophytic effects that reduce seed production and seed size. While pollen germination and stylar growth were normal in mutant pistils, fertilization does not take place because of abnormalities in the pollen tube-ovary interaction in this genotype. Inside the ovary of pat plants, pollen tubes appeared to be disorientated; they wandered about in the ovarian cavity and often lost their adherence to the placental surface. Interestingly, in pat ovaries fertilization was strongly impaired even in those ovules that appeared normal. It may be that apparently 'normal' ovules cannot guide pollen tubes to their micropyle in the altered pat ovary because adhesion molecules are not properly arrayed on a placenta that is already preparing for cell division or, alternatively, chemotropic signals in the pat ovary may be altered by the presence of aberrant ovules, which are not simply devoid of attractivity, but disrupt pollen tube guidance overall.  相似文献

Plants produce repeated structures, such as leaves, flowers, and fruits, which differ in size and shape. One example of this is fruit size, which is commonly observed to decrease from proximal to distal positions within an inflorescence. The resource limitation hypothesis proposes that because proximal fruits usually develop first, they have temporal priority on access to resources over distal fruits. The non-mutually exclusive architectural effects hypothesis suggests that these position effects in fruit size may also be due to inherent architectural variation along infructescence axes. We separated out the effects of resource competition and inflorescence architecture by removing the outer or the inner flowers within capitula of Tragopogon porrifolius. We also studied if fruit position influenced germination and seedling performance in order to assess fitness consequences of position effects. Inner fruits were significantly heavier when outer flowers were removed. However, outer fruits did not significantly increase when inner flowers were removed, suggesting later fruits were limited by the development of early fruits. Our findings also suggest that architectural constraints restricted the size of inner fruits in comparison with outer ones. We found that both resource competition and inflorescence architecture affected the fruit size of T. porrifolius, even though this species does not have linear, indeterminate inflorescences. We advance the hypothesis that, when such effects on fitness occur, resource competition-mediated position effects could turn, in evolutionary time, into architectural position effects.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Under the microgametophytic competition hypothesis, a non-random pattern of seed abortion is expected, in which only the most vigorous seeds reach maturity. In a previous study, it was found that Bauhinia ungulata (Fabaceae) exhibits a pattern of seed abortion dependent on the position of the ovule within the ovary; ovules located in the stylar half of the fruit, close to the point of entry of pollen tubes to the ovary, have a low probability of seed abortion, whereas ovules in the basal half of the fruit are aborted with a high probability. METHODS: A series of experimental fruits was generated, in which ovules from either the stylar (treatments 1 and 2) or the basal (treatments 3 and 4) half of fruits were destroyed, to evaluate whether these patterns of selective seed abortion have an effect on the vigour of the offspring in B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Only 53 % of the seed from control fruits germinated. Seed set in fruits from treatments 1 and 2 showed a significantly lower (33-43 %) percentage of germination; the germination of seeds from fruits in treatments 3 and 4 (49-51 %) did not differ from control seeds. In addition, it was found that the differences in vigour of the offspring are not random with respect to the position of the ovule in the pod. CONCLUSIONS: The overall performance of the seeds correlated with their likelihood of maturation. Seeds located at the basal half of the treatment fruits showed lower values of vigour than seeds located on the stylar half. The differences were more marked for early measures of fitness.  相似文献

In four field and glasshouse experiments designed to alter the supply of resources through manipulation of nutrients, root tissue, leaf area and fruit number in Alliaria petiolata (Brassicaceae), more than 99% of ovules per plant showed signs of fertilization, suggesting that seed production in this plant was not pollen limited. However, in all treatments a significant proportion of fruits and seeds did not develop to maturity. Total fruit and seed production did not differ significantly from controls when plants were given nutrient supplements at flowering. Removal of 50–75% of the root tissue in 1-yr-old plants significantly reduced fruit set, but had no effect on individual seed development. Removal of cauline leaves significantly reduced most measures of fruit and seed production, suggesting that current photosynthate is critical for fruit and seed filling. Seed maturation was significantly affected by both fruit position within an infructescence and ovule position within a fruit. Basally located fruits and ovules (within fruits) developed more mature seeds than distally positioned fruits and ovules. Plants responded to removal of basal fruits by re-allocating resources to distal fruits that would normally have aborted. Our results suggest that fruits and seeds act as reproductive sinks competing for parental photosynthate. Patterns of resource allocation within infructescences and fruits were also modified by our experiments.  相似文献

Summary Flower and fruit characters were measured in ten female, five male and five fruiting male selections of A. deliciosa var deliciosa (A. Chev) Liang and Ferguson. Flowers from female vines had functional pistils, which contained many ovules. Stamens appeared to be fully developed but produced only empty pollen grains. Flowers from male vines had functional stamens that produced high percentages of pollen grains with stainable cytoplasmic contents. Pistils did not contain ovules and were generally small with vestigial styles. Fruiting male vines had both staminate and bisexual flowers. Staminate flowers were similar to those found on strictly male vines. Bisexual flowers produced ovules and stainable pollen. Pistils were smaller than in pistillate flowers. Although the three flower sexes differed in style length, ovary dimensions and ovules per carpel, staminate and bisexual flowers were similar in number of flowers per inflorescence, stamen filament length, pollen stainability, inflorescence rachis length and carpel number, and differed from pistillate flowers in these characters. The three flower sexes had similar sepal and petal numbers. The fruit of fruiting males were considerably smaller than those of females. Low ovule number appears to be the major factor limiting fruit size in the fruiting males studied. Prospects for developing hermaphroditic kiwifruit cultivars through breeding are discussed.  相似文献

The plants of Leguminosae, which comprises 731 genera, bear monocarpellary flowers. The fruit, known as a pod, generally contains a row of seeds, and the internal structure appears to be simple. In Leguminosae, the seeds are generally arranged longitudinally along the suture of the pod but, in a few genera, namely, Cassia, Indigofera, and Senna, they are arranged transversely. Transverse seed arrangement facilitates the accommodation of a considerable number of seeds and has been considered to be established by rotation of seeds during development. We studied the development both these patterns of seed arrangement, i.e., longitudinal and transverse, in Senna and Indigofera in order to elucidate the structural changes occurring in ovaries (or pods) and determine the forces responsible for rotation of ovules (or seeds) by dissecting ovaries and pods at different developmental stages. Our results showed that at an early developmental stage the ovules were obliquely oriented or transversely arranged; later, the direction of their growth was restricted by the ovary walls or neighboring ovules, and therefore the obliquely oriented ovules rotated inward or outward. Thus, it was clarified that the processes involved in the formation of the internal structure of pods are regulated in a complex manner. In winter oilseed rape (WOSR), only a subset of ovules can develop into seeds in the majority of pods. Any difficulty during the process of seed production may result in seed or pod abortion. This study aimed to reproduce the process of seed development in WOSR based on a limited number of parameters. As a result of the complexity of the developmental patterns of WOSR, it is challenging to identify the roles of various factors that influence seed production using an experimental approach. Here, we present a stochastic probabilistic model of seed development. The generalised least squares method was implemented to estimate the model parameters using the experimental data. Experiments were done in Grignon (France) in 2008 and 2009. The variations in the parameters were analysed according to the following four factors: year, pod rank, inflorescence position and ramification‐clipping treatment. The year had no effect on the number of ovules per ovary (μ) and the probability of seed viability (p). The proportion of effective pollen grains (k) significantly decreased with pod rank at the end of the main stem. Inflorescence position influenced the number of ovules per ovary (μ: 30.8–33.8 from top to bottom) and the parameter k. The mean number of seeds per pod on the main stem and the bottom ramification along the stem was larger than the other ramifications within one plant. Ramification‐clipping treatment increased the number of ovules per ovary (μ: 31 for control plants and 32 for clipped plants), the parameter k and the number of seeds per pod (p). This effect could be due to the competition for assimilates between the pods and seeds. Furthermore, the distribution parameters of the pollen number per stigma (m) remained stable, and the probability of pod survival (Bo) varied with different factors, including the year, pod rank and inflorescence position. Our results indicate that pollen germination is a factor that determines final seed number. This model can identify the impact of each of the factors that lead to the abortion of seeds and pods in WOSR, which include the position effect, assimilate competition and pollination limitation. However, further studies on the pollination process in WOSR should help to refine this model.  相似文献

Summary Phaseolus coccineus typically has six linearly arranged ovules per ovary. The three ovules near the stylar end of the fruit (positions one, two, and three) are more likely to produce mature seeds, to produce heavier seeds, and to produce more vigorous progeny than the ovules in positions near the peduncular/basal end of the fruit (ovule positions four, five, and six). We conducted a series of field experiments designed to supplement our understanding of the mechanisms determining these position effects. We found that approximately 98% of the ovules in 752 fruits were fertilized — about 0.6% of the stylar ovules were not fertilized, whereas 3.2% of the basal ovules were unfertilized. Moreover, we found that only about 49% of the ovules in these 752 fruits produced mature seeds. Over 60% of the stylar ovules produced mature seeds, whereas only 37% of the basal ovules produced mature seeds. Consequently, the proportion of fertilized ovules cannot explain the differences in seed maturation among the ovule positions. We found that after 6.5 h most of the fertilized ovules were located in the stylar ovule positions, and that there were no fertilized ovules in ovule positions five and six, indicating that the stylar ovules are fertilized first. When only the fastest growing pollen tubes were permitted to enter the ovary (due to exision of the style), only the ovules at the stylar end were fertilized, indicating that the ovule positions that are fertilized first are indeed fertilized by the fastest growing pollen tubes.On leave from the Escuela de Biologia, Universidad de Costa Rica, Cuidad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio, San Jose, Costa Rica, Central America  相似文献
