A new genus and species Gordoniopsis polysperma and two new species of Gordonia (Gordonieae, Camellioideae, Theaceae) are described based on fossil fruit and seed remains. These specimens are part of a large flora consisting of various plant organs from the middle Eocene Claiborne Formation in western Kentucky and Tennessee. Gordoniopsis is a five-valved loculicidally dehiscent capsule similar to capsules of Gordonia but differing in having unwinged seeds and a greater number of seeds per locule. The two Gordonia species are among the earliest unequivocal records of the genus and two of only four fossil Gordonia species known with in situ seeds. Two extinct genera, Gordoniopsis and Andrewsiocarpon, and the extant genus Gordonia in the tribe Gordonieae are known from the middle Eocene Claiborne flora, suggesting an early radiation within the tribe. Based on a survey of Recent fruits and seeds we concur with Keng's proposal to merge Laplacea with Gordonia.  相似文献

The winged fruits of Engelhardia have been reported in many early Tertiary floras in the northern Hemisphere. Recent systematic revisions of the extant genera, Engelhardia, Oreomunnea, and Alfaroa provide a helpful guide to the study of the fossil fruits. Fruit form, venation, nut septations and flower parts are features that separate the extant Asian Engelhardia from the American Oreomunnea. Four types of fossil winged fruits can be recognized in Middle Eocene sediments of southeastern North America: Engelhardia, Paraoreomunnea gen. n., Paleooreomunnea gen. n., and Pararengelhardia. Both Paleooreomunnea and Paraengelhardia represent extinct lines; no living forms have similar winged fruits. The fossil fruits of Engelhardia and Paraoreomunnea are similar to the fruits of extant Engelhardia and Oreomunnea, respectively. The fossil taxa reported in this paper were sympatric. The present allopatric distribution of Engelhardia and Oreomunnea is the result of Neogene regional extinctions. Engelhardia and Oreomunnea have probably been distinct genera since early Paleogene time.  相似文献

Flowers from the Middle Eocene Claiborne Formation of western Tennessee have both floral and palynological features suggestive of affinities with the subfamily Celtidoideae of the Ul-maceae. Floral size, pollen size, and exine structure suggest that these flowers are intermediate between insect-pollinated ancestors and the modern wind-pollinated Celtidoideae. Thus, they represent the first direct fossil evidence supporting the widespread notion that at least some of the Amentiferae have been derived from insect-pollinated ancestors.  相似文献

Specimens showing staminate and pistillate inflorescences attached to branches bearing Fagopsis longifolia (Lesq.) Hollick foliage, from the Oligocene Florissant flora of Colorado, permit a relatively complete characterization of the extinct Fagopsis plant. The alternately arranged simple leaves have pinnate craspedodromous venation and prominent simple teeth. Staminate inflorescences are globose on a stout peduncle and contain anthers with tricolporate pollen. Pistillate inflorescences are ovoid heads with compact, helically arranged three-flower units and are interpreted to have three styles per flower. The infructescence consists of small wedge-shaped cupules, each containing three tiny fruits, and subtended by a persistent bract. The cupules unravel from the swollen peduncle at maturity and are often dispersed as strings of adhering fruit-wedges which frequently take on a regular, more or less circular appearance. Fagopsis is unlike any living genus but has characters which support a relationship to the Fagaceae. Unlike extant members of the family, which typically have fruits adapted for animal dispersal, Fagopsis is less obviously specialized and perhaps adapted for wind dispersal. The striking differences in fruiting structures between Fagopsis and extant Fagaceae parallel the differences between the extant genera Platycarya and Juglans in the Juglandaceae, and Alnus and Corylus in the Betulaceae.  相似文献

A new genus of fossil angiosperms (Spanomera gen. nov.) is established for flowers from two localities in the mid-Cretaceous Potomac Group of Maryland, eastern North America. The type species, Spanomera mauldinensis sp. nov., from the early Cenomanian Elk Neck beds, has inflorescence units with terminal pistillate, and lateral staminate flowers. The organization of inflorescences and flowers is opposite and decussate. Staminate flowers typically have five tepals: two lateral, one posterior, and two in the anterior position. Each tepal is opposed to a stamen with a short filament, dorsifixed anther, and two pairs of pollen sacs. Stamens contain pollen comparable to the dispersed pollen species Striatopollis paraneus (Norris) Singh. Pistillate flowers have two lateral tepals and two anterior-posterior tepals that are opposed to two carpels. Carpels are slightly fused basally along their ventral margins and are semicircular in outline with a long, decurrent, papillate ventral stigma. Frequently this stigmatic surface has abundant attached pollen of the Striatopollis paraneus type. Spanomera marylandensis sp. nov., from the late Albian Patapsco Formation, is similar to S. mauldinensis but is known only from isolated flowers and floral parts. Staminate flowers have four stamens with dorsifixed anthers and each is opposed to a tepal. Stamens contain pollen comparable to the dispersed pollen species Striatopollis vermimurus (Brenner) Srivastava. Carpels have pollen of S. vermimurus on the stigma. Spanomera provides further evidence of unisexual but probably insect-pollinated flowers among mid-Cretaceous, early nonmagnoliid (“higher”) dicotyledons, and is interpreted as closely related to extant Buxaceae. Characters that Spanomera shares with other taxa suggest that the Buxaceae themselves may be closely related to Myrothamnaceae and other “lower” Hamamelididae.  相似文献

Six examples of a spicate inflorescence from the Middle Eocene Claiborne Formation in western Tennessee have been investigated. Individual flowers are small, alternately arranged, nearly sessile, and perfect. The style protrudes 2 mm beyond the floral envelope and terminates in a slightly swollen, rounded stigma. Both the style and the stigma are hairy. Ten stamens are exserted and extend 5 mm beyond the floral envelope. Anthers are small, versatile, and dehisce longitudinally. Pollen grains are tricolporate, tectate, and are in permanent tetrahedral tetrads 32 μm in diameter. Comparison of the fossil inflorescences with those of extant families having multiple pollen grain configurations suggests that the fossil inflorescences are most closely allied to the subfamily Mimosoideae of the Leguminosae. These are the first structurally documented remains of the Mimosoideae from the Middle Eocene.  相似文献

Large leaves, new to the fossil record, from the Claiborne Formation in western Tennessee have been collected and analyzed. Careful analyses of venation and cuticular anatomy indicate that these fossil leaves contain specific characters found in modern species of the genus Philodendron subgenus Meconostigma. Features of venation were taxonomically more useful than other features. Reports of fossils of the Araceae are scarce and those few fossils assigned to the family frequently have been inadequately studied. This report establishes a reliable and carefully documented occurrence of the Araceae in the fossil record, and provides information concerning the differentiation of the family in time and the distributions of the genus Philodendron.  相似文献

Fruits, catkins, and associated leaves of at least two extinct trigonobalanoid taxa have been discovered at an Oligocene fossil plant locality rich in fagaceous remains. These fossils exhibit a mosaic of fruit and pollen characters found in the two extant subfamilies Castaneoideae and Fagoideae of Fagaceae. Comparison with cladograms based on modern taxa suggests that these extinct taxa were similar to the ancestors of subfamily Fagoideae and may have been intermediate between Fagus and the modern trigonobalanoid genera. Pollen types isolated from the fossil staminate catkins provide unique character states that are transitional between modern pollen types in Fagaceae and are important in understanding the evolution of exine micromorphology within the family. This analysis provides a striking example of the use of character data from fossils to determine character-state adjacency prior to polarization of characters using outgroup comparison. Because of the mosaic nature of their character complexes, these fossils support monophyly in both the family Fagaceae and the subfamily Fagoideae. In addition, the occurrence of trigonobalanoid fossils in the Oligocene of North America has interesting biogeographic implications and provides insights into the nature of North American Fagaceae during the Tertiary.  相似文献

As part of a reinvestigation of the Eocene floras from southeastern North America, a leaf form similar to some that were formerly placed in the genus Aradia has been identified as Dendropanax. Studies of the fine venation and cuticular characters have been important in this identification. This is the first report of leaf material of the genus Dendropanax in the fossil record.  相似文献

Three specimens of one type of fossil catkin from the Middle Eocene of Tennessee are excellently preserved and have been investigated morphologically. The flowers on these catkins are subtended by elongate, three-lobed bracts, are exclusively staminate, and have three conspicuous, obovate, perianth parts that bear large peltate scales. The stamens are well preserved and contain triporate pollen grains that are equivalent to the dispersed pollen genus Momipites. Floral morphology, cuticular features, and pollen indicate close affinities with the extant genera Engelhardia, Oreomunnea, and Alfaroa of the Juglandaceae; but because the fossil catkins are distinct and are a dispersed plant organ, they are placed in a new form genus: Eokachyra. These fossil flowers represent a rare opportunity to correlate the micro- and macrofossil record and to compare the relative rates of evolution of these features. The fossil catkins also demonstrate that much structural information may be gained from the study of fossil angiosperm flowers. The similarities between the staminate flowers of the fossil catkins and the staminate flowers of Engelhardia, Oreomunnea, and Alfaroa confirm the idea that this complex has had a long evolutionary history and suggest that the pollination system of certain extant genera was well developed during Middle Eocene times.  相似文献

本文用光学显微镜和扫描电镜观察了中国北部绣线菊属SpiraeaL.21种及6个变种的花粉形态,描述了外壁纹饰的形态特征,指出了外壁纹饰特征在分类上的意义。绣线菊属的花粉为球形至长球形,外壁纹饰为条网状至条纹状。外壁纹饰类型不具有属内分组意义,但对一些种类具有一定的分类价值。花粉形态支持将曲枣绣线菊S.flexuosaFisch。并入石蚕叶绣线菊S.chamoedryfoliaL.的观点[Maximowicz,C.J.(1879)、Rehder,Ai.(1940)],不同意将蒙古绣线菊毛枝变种S.mongolicaMaxim.var.tomentulosaYu提升为贺兰山绣线菊S.tomentulosa(Yu)Y.Z.Zhao[赵一之(1987)]。  相似文献

Leaf compressions, previously assigned to Rhamnus marginatus Lesquereux, were collected from the Middle Eocene Claiborne Formation of western Kentucky and Tennessee. The leaf architecture and cuticular features of over 40 compressions were carefully examined and compared to those of many extant species of Rhamnaceae and related families as well as fossil specimens previously assigned to this taxon. This leaf type appears to belong to the Rhamnaceae, however, it conforms more closely to species of several genera in the tribe Zizypheae than to those of Rhamnus or other genera in the tribe Rhamneae. Confident assignment to any specific genus within this complex of genera cannot be made on the basis of leaf characteristics alone and would require discovery and analysis of additional vegetative and reproductive organs. Because this fossil leaf form cannot be confidently assigned to any modern genus and earlier classifications appear to be improper, this leaf type has been reassigned to the taxon Berhamniphyllum claibornense gen. et sp. nov. The transfer of this leaf form at the tribe level reaffirms the need for close examination of taxonomic determinations made by early workers.  相似文献

A study was made of the gross morphological characters and cuticular features of several fossil leaves of Knightiophyllum wilcoxianum Berry. These fossil leaves were collected from Eocene deposits exposed in three clay pits in western Tennessee. This investigation refutes the relationship of Knightiophyllum wilcoxianum to the modern genus Knightia and the family Proteaceae as suggested by E. W. Berry.  相似文献

A new fertile species of Botryopteris (Botryopteridaceae: Filicales) is described from four incomplete Middle Pennsylvanian specimens. Fertile pinnae of B. cratis sp. n. consist of branched frond members bearing numerous globose sporangia. Surrounding the sporangial aggregations are larger sterile frond members (0.5-1.5 mm diam). Fertile pinnae are oval in transverse section and possess an eccentrically developed cortex composed chiefly of fibers. Some frond members show the typical botryopterid xylem configuration with three protoxylem strands. Spherical sporangia are loosely aggregated on the smallest pinnae by short, broad stalks. The annulus is band-like, two cells high, and extends transversely across the lower half of the sporangium for approximately half the circumference. Spores are oval, trilete, verrucate, and covered by a thin separable layer. Sporangium morphology is like that of Botryopteris antiqua, but the spores closely resemble those of B. globosa. The new species is unlike previously described fructifications of Botryopteris in exhibiting a small pinna system which surrounds smaller pinnae bearing sporangia in an aggregation. The new form is considered to be less specialized than previously described globosoid forms because the sporangia are much less crowded. Isolated frond members, believed to belong to the new species, have a large central arm in the pinna xylem trace that resembles the Stephanian taxon B. renaultii. Small stems attached to the adaxial surface of frond members are radial, protostelic, centrarch, and have a three-zoned cortex. The inner cortical zone contains large elongate cells with distinctive layered deposits. Stems are covered with uniseriate multicellular hairs on multicellular bases. Stems compare closely with B. mucilaginosa in histological features.  相似文献

Illus. 1962. —Woods of Ginkgo and extinct related genera are very rare in the fossil record in contrast to the numerous ginkgoalean leaves. Ginkgo wood may be distinguished from other gymnosperms by a combination of anatomical features herein described. Ginkgo wood from beds of Miocene age at Vantage, Washington, first identified by Beck, is assigned to a new species, G. beckii. Ginkgo wood from the upper Eocene Clarno Formation, John Day Basin, Oregon, is described as G. bonesii sp. nov. Scarcity of fossil ginkgoalean woods may reflect unusual susceptibility to degradation of their cell walls in contrast to the greater chemical resistance to degradation which features many coniferous woods.  相似文献

The pollen organ Feraxotheca gen. n. is described from Pennsylvanian age coal balls from the Lewis Creek, Kentucky, locality. The fructifications consist of bilaterally symmetrical synangia composed of a basal pad supporting elongate sporangia that are laterally appressed for the entire length of the sporangial cavities. Sporangial tips extend over the center of the synangium and delimit a small open area, while the bases arise from a parenchymatous cushion that is bounded by short tracheid-like cells. Each synangium is borne on the surface of an expanded pinna tip and is surrounded by a small amount of laminar tissue that envelopes the base of the synangium. Ultimate pinnae are rectangular in transverse section, possess an elliptical vascular bundle surrounded by canals containing a yellow froth-like substance, and have a cortex of elongate cells that radiate from the center of the axis. Sporangia contain small (40–64 μm), radial, trilete spores ornamented by regularly spaced coni or blunt tipped grana. Feraxotheca is compared with the compression genus Crossotheca and some new ideas are advanced concerning the morphology of this compression genus. The obvious differences between Feraxotheca and other lyginopterid pollen organs strongly suggests that the Lyginopteridaceae, as it is currently interpreted, is an unnatural family.  相似文献
