Summary This study evaluated the contribution of different ages of foliage to the nutrient and carbon balance of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) from a nutrient-poor peatland in Alberta. Seasonal patterns of foliar nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and content were examined in six needle cohorts up to 10 years old. Trees were treated to simulate excess nutrient deficiency (removal of all one-year-old foliage), nutrient excess (fertilized with 250, 50, 100 kg ha–1 NPK split application in June and July), or left as controls. Gas exchange (net assimilation-Na, stomatal conductance-gs, mesophyll conductance-gm, water-use efficiency-WUE, dark respiration-RS) was measured on six different needle cohorts in several control trees in 1989 and 1990. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentration decreased with needle age. Foliar nutrient concentration fell from April to June and then was stable until September except for the fertilized trees where it increased. There was no evidence of greater than normal retranslocation of nutrients from older needles for defoliated trees or greater than normal nutrient loading in older needles of fertilized trees. NA, gs, gm, WUE, and RS were similar for all needles up to six or eight years old, these older needles having NA of 65% of current needles and similar RS. The results do not support to conclusion that older needles of black spruce are retained as an adaptation to nutrient stress. It does not appear that older needles serve as a nutrient storage site in conditions of excess nutrient availability or a greater than normal nutrient source during times of excess nutrient deficiency. It appears that the maintenance of long-livedfoliage in black spruce does not provide for greater flexibility in tree nutrient allocation. Their contribution to the carbon balance of the tree seems to be sufficient to explain their retention.  相似文献

Foliage of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) was collected in a mixed pine/oak forest at canopy positions differing in radiation environment. In both species, chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratios were higher in foliage of canopy positions exposed to higher irradiance as compared to more shaded crown layers. Throughout the growing season, pine needles exhibited significantly lower Chl a/b ratios than oak leaves acclimated to a similar photon availability. Hence, pine needles showed shade-type pigment characteristics relative to foliage of oak. At a given radiation environment, pine needles tended to contain more neoxanthin and lutein per unit of Chl than oak leaves. The differences in pigment composition between foliage of pine and oak can be explained by a higher ratio of outer antennae Chl to core complex Chl in needles of P. sylvestris which enhances the efficiency of photon capture under limiting irradiance. The shade-type pigment composition of pine relative to oak foliage could have been due to a reduced mesophyll internal photon exposure of chloroplasts in needles of Scots pine, resulting from their xeromorphic anatomy. Hence, the higher drought tolerance of pine needles could be achieved at the expense of shade tolerance.  相似文献

Needle ageing and senescence were studied in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees growing in natural conditions with minimal anthropogenic influence. The four existing needle generations were analyzed by light and transmission electron microscopy before and during autumnal yellowing of the oldest needle generation. The change from green to yellow occurred within less than 4 days in central Finland. The structure of the oldest needles remained largely intact as long as they were green. Increase in mitochondrion size and hypertrophy of the phloem parenchyma were the only changes, probably related to the approaching senescence. In the yellow needles, the structure of the mesophyll tissue varied from nearly intact with reduced chloroplasts and higher numbers of plastoglobuli, to totally disintegrated cells. In the disintegrated cells, peroxisomes were absent, and chloroplasts were smaller with a patchy appearance and degraded, eventually empty-looking stroma. Mitochondria were enlarged, but retained integrity until the last stages of deterioration, and lipids increased. At the light microscopic level, vacuolar volume in mesophyll cells and cavity formation in transfusion tissue increased. Ageing was characterized by increases in the vacuolar volume and cytoplasmic lipids, altered appearance of vacuolar tannin from homogenous ‘sandy’, to large spherical drops and finally to a large mass in the mesophyll, and by hypertrophy and tannin accumulation in the phloem parenchyma. Changes related to needle ageing, senescence and cell location in the mesophyll tissue were discussed relative to findings with stress by strong light, weather conditions and ozone.  相似文献

Terpenes were analyzed in needles of pollution injured Picea abies (L.) Karst. of the Southern Black Forest (SW Germany) showing symptoms of montane yellowing. Compared to a set of healthy trees, a set of injured trees showed increased terpene hydrocarbon concentrations relative to needle fresh weight. This difference was even more pronounced when the terpene concentrations of green, healthy and yellowing, injured needles from the same internode of individual injured trees were compared. Increased terpene concentrations were observed in the basal parts of injured needles, while their distal parts exhibited a loss of terpenes. In addition, an alteration in the pattern of terpene occurrence was observable. Most striking was the changed ratio of α-pinene to β -pinene. with marked increase of the latter, in injured needles. As indicated by ultratrace analysis of isolated mesophyll. vascular tissue and resin ducts of the needles, mono- and sesquiterpenes were found exclusively in resin ducts. The other tissues were virtually free of terpenes. Isolated resin from a single resin duct contained all terpenes (monoterpene hydrocarbons, alcohols and ketones, and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons) that are typical for the needle. An individual response to air pollution of each separate short resin duct in the needle may be deduced.  相似文献

Conifer needles of different ages perform differently in ecophysiology. However, no study has investigated the biomass distribution of different-aged needles in a tree crown or/and a stand canopy. We carried out a study on young (∼50 years old) and old (∼200 years) Pinus cembra L. trees at highland (2100–2300 m a.s.l.) and lowland (570 m) sites in Switzerland. We found that both the young and the old trees living in the highlands had more needle biomass per tree than the same-aged trees of the same species living in the lowlands. This is mainly due to the greater longevity of needles in highland trees. It reflects the strategic responses of trees to low resource availability or high abiotic stress level. Having older needles increases the time that nutrients are resident in trees in less favorable environments, and compensates for shorter growing period in cold temperatures.  相似文献

The genus Pinus has wide geographical range and includes species that are the most economically valued among forest trees worldwide. Pine needle length varies greatly among species, but the effects of needle length on anatomy, function, and coordination and trade‐offs among traits are poorly understood. We examined variation in leaf morphological, anatomical, mechanical, chemical, and physiological characteristics among five southern pine species: Pinus echinata, Pinus elliottii, Pinus palustris, Pinus taeda, and Pinus virginiana. We found that increasing needle length contributed to a trade‐off between the relative fractions of support versus photosynthetic tissue (mesophyll) across species. From the shortest (7 cm) to the longest (36 cm) needles, mechanical tissue fraction increased by 50%, whereas needle dry density decreased by 21%, revealing multiple adjustments to a greater need for mechanical support in longer needles. We also found a fourfold increase in leaf hydraulic conductance over the range of needle length across species, associated with weaker upward trends in stomatal conductance and photosynthetic capacity. Our results suggest that the leaf size strongly influences their anatomical traits, which, in turn, are reflected in leaf mechanical support and physiological capacity.  相似文献

Summary A method for the rapid determination of the lengths and surface areas of very large samples of needles of Picea abies (L.) Karst. using a computer-aided image analysis system was developed. Two independent methods for measuring non-destructively the volumes of individual needles and of all needles attached to a twig were devised. The surface areas and lengths of about 38000 needles sampled from the three youngest needle age-classes (1986, 1985, 1984) of 48 trees approximately 130 years old at four sites in the Fichtelgebirge mountains (N. E. Bavaria, FRG) were measured. The frequency distributions of lengths and areas for each site and age-class are given. Variability of needle size was fairly large. Even though the sites differed in climate, soil, and air pollution levels no consistent effect of these factors on needle size could be detected. Needle lengths and surface areas did not correlate with either the total chlorophyll content of the needles or the degree of crown thinning. The needle surface area (in mm2) of fully developed P. abies needles can be estimated by the empirical equation surface area = 4.440 x needle length -24.8 (r = 0.937), and the needle volume (in mm3) by needle volume = 0.208 x projected needle area 1.353 (r = 0.969).  相似文献

During one growing period, 5-year-old spruce trees (Picea abies L., Karst.) were exposed in environmental chambers to elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide (750 cm3 m?3) and ozone (008 cm3 m?3) as single variables or in combination. Control concentrations of the gases were 350cm3 m?3CO2 and 0.02 cm3 m ?3 ozone. To investigate whether an elevated CO2 concentration can prevent adverse ozone effects by reducing oxidative stress, the activities of the protective enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase were determined. Furthermore, shoot biomass, pigment and protein contents of two needle age classes were investigated. Ozone caused pigment reduction and visible injury in the previous year's needles and growth reduction in the current year's shoots. In the presence of elevated concentrations of ozone and CO2, growth reduction in the current year's shoots was prevented, but emergence of visible damage in the previous year's needles was only delayed and pigment reduction was still found. Elevated concentrations of ozone or CO2 as single variables caused a significant reduction in the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the current year's needles. Minimum activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase and decreased peroxidase activities were found in both needle age classes from spruce trees grown at enhanced concentrations of both CO2 and ozone. These results suggest a reduced tolerance to oxidative stress in spruce trees under conditions of elevated concentrations of both CO2 and ozone.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) seedlings were exposed to realistically elevated O3 levels in open‐air experiments over three growing seasons. The total O3 exposure doses were 1.2 × (1991), 1.5 × (1992) and 1.7 × (1993) ambient levels. During the 1992 and 1993 growing seasons pine and spruce seedlings received two different levels of nitrogen supply. Effects on growth, mycorrhiza formation, needle ultrastructure, primary and secondary compounds were studied. Ozone exposure had only slight effects on biomass production, growth height and nutrient content of studied conifers. Higher nitrogen availability improved growth of the seedlings and resulted in higher concentration of nitrogen in needles. In Scots pine O3 exposure did not have effects on quantity of total mycorrhizas and short roots, while higher nitrogen availability decreased quantity of mycorrhizas and short roots. In both tree species O3 exposure induced O3‐related ultrastructural symptoms, e.g. granulation and dark staining of the chloroplast stroma in the needle mesophyll cells, at both nitrogen availability levels. Ozone exposure and nitrogen availability did not have significant effects on starch concentrations in either tree species. Concentrations of some individual terpenes were higher in O3‐exposed needles, while concentrations of individual and total resin acids, total phenolics and catechins were not affected by O3 exposure. Nitrogen availability did not have substantial effects on concentrations of monoterpenes. By contrast, concentrations of some individual and total resin acids were lower in pine needles and higher in spruce needles with higher nitrogen availability, while phenolic concentration in spruce needles decreased at higher nitrogen availability. The results suggest that realistically elevated levels of O3 in the field can have some negative effects on the mesophyll ultrastructure of conifer needles, but carbon allocation to root and shoot growth and secondary metabolites are not affected substantially.  相似文献

To evaluate the acclimative ability of current-year and previous-year needles of a shade tolerant conifer Taxus baccata L. to contrasting irradiance conditions, seedlings were raised under 27% solar irradiance and at 3 years of age they were transferred to an experimental garden and grown for one season under full irradiance (HL), 18% irradiance (ML) or 5% irradiance (LL). Whereas previous year needles did not change anatomically, current year needles in HL were thicker and had a thicker palisade and spongy mesophyll, and greater leaf mass per area than ML or LL needles. LL needles had greater nitrogen concentration than HL needles irrespective of age but only previous year LL needles also had an increased N per area content, thanks to their lack of reduction in LMA. Adjustment of chlorophyll and carotenoid content occurred in both needle age classes with LL and ML needles having much higher concentrations but, in current year needles, only slightly higher per area content than HL needles. Chlorophyll a/b ratio was not affected by age or irradiance. These modifications had no significant effect on photosynthetic capacities, which did not significantly differ between the age classes in HL or LL treatment and between treatments. On the other hand, high growth irradiance resulted in a greater photochemical yield, photochemical quenching, apparent electron transport rate and inducible non-photochemical quenching in needles formed in the current season. In previous year needles, however, only inducible NPQ was enhanced by high irradiance with other parameters remaining identical among treatments. To test sensitivity to photoinhibition, at the end of the summer plants from the three irradiance levels were transferred to a HL situation and F v/F M was determined over the following 18 days. Sensitivity to photoinhibition was negatively related to growth irradiance and previous year needles were less photoinhibited than current year needles. Thus, differences in acclimation ability between needle age classes were most pronounced at the level of anatomy and light reactions of photosynthesis, both of which showed almost no plasticity in previous year needles but were considerably modified by irradiance in current year needles.  相似文献

The effects of enhanced UV‐B radiation on the needle anatomy of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied in the field under supplemental UV‐B radiation supplied by a modulated irradiation system. The supplemental UV‐B levels were designed to simulate either a 16 or 25% loss of stratospheric ozone over College Park, Maryland. Enhanced UV‐B radiation caused different responses in these two species. The needles of loblolly pine had larger amounts of tannin in the lumen of epidermal cells and more wall‐bound phenolics in the outer epidermal walls of UV‐B‐treated needles, whereas the most pronounced effect on Scots pine needles was increased cutinization. In both species, the outer epidermal cell walls thickened and the needle cross‐sectional and mesophyll areas decreased (statistically significantly only in Scots pine). This suggests that more carbon may have been allocated to the protection mechanisms at the expense of photosynthetic area. The difference in response between these species suggests that the response to UV‐B radiation is not mediated by a single mechanism and that no generalization with regard to the effects of UV‐B on conifers can be made.  相似文献

Summary Chalcone synthase (CHS), the key enzyme of flavonoid biosynthesis, is localized by indirect immunofluorescence in needles ofLarix decidua. In young stages of needle development CHS is present in epidermal cells and individual cells in the region of the vascular bundles which possibly contain tannins. A later developmental stage exhibits immunofluorescence predominantly in the mesophyll of the needle. The epidermis and the cells in the vicinity of the vascular bundles show a considerably weaker and only sporadically detectable fluorescence. CHS is no longer observable at the latest analyzed stages of needle development.  相似文献

Nutrient conservation in plants and soil fertility may be intricately linked. We studied nitrogen conservation in small Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.) trees growing in stands on organogenic Dystric Histosols and on mineral Podzols. Nitrogen-resorption efficiency (NRE) and proficiency (NRP) of senescent needles, and mean residence time of nitrogen (MRT) were studied in relation to needle surface area, needle longevity, and leaf mass per area (LMA). Trees on Podzols had higher nitrogen concentration in green needles than the trees on Dystric Histosols, but the nitrogen concentration of yellowing needles was similar for trees on both soil types. NRE averaged 65±3.5% (mean±SD) and 56±7.2% for the trees on Podzols and Dystric Histosols, respectively. Neither NRP (0.44±0.05% and 0.35±0.07%, respectively) nor MRT (8.4±2.3 and 6.1±1.2 years) differed significantly between the stands on the two soil types. Mean needle surface area was significantly smaller in trees on Dystric Histosols (76±29 mm2) than on Podzols (131±38 mm2), whereas needle longevity varied between 2 and 4 years independently of the soil type. Trees invested, on average, the same amount of dry matter per unit of needle area on both soil types. Growth of trees, measured as increment of shoot length, was more restricted on Dystric Histosols (55±18 mm yr–1) than on Podzols (184±44 mm yr–1). The results of the correlation analysis applied to pooled data were inconsistent with the relations between traits of stress resistance syndrome observed in inter-specific comparisons. The study indicated that Scots pine trees relocated nitrogen from senescent foliage more efficiently on mineral Podzols than on organogenic Dystric Histosols, but the minimum nitrogen concentration of needles appeared to be similar on both soil types.  相似文献

Levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) were determined in needles from silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) trees in the northern Black Forest. IAA was quantified by gas chromatography (GC) as 1-heptafluorobutyryl-IAA-methylester (HFB-IAA-ME) using electron capture detection. Prior to GC analysis, extensive purification of needle extracts was performed employing two HPLC steps. Peak identity of HFB-IAA-ME was confirmed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selected samples. Levels of IAA in needles belonging to different needle age-classes exhibited a cyclic seasonal pattern with highest concentrations in winter and lowest levels in spring when bud-break occurred. Such a cyclic seasonal pattern of IAA levels was also observed in needles from declining fir trees or fir trees suffering from a strong sulfur impact (S-impact) in the field due to a local SO2 source. Levels of IAA increased with increasing needle age. This age dependency of IAA concentrations was most pronounced in late autumn when IAA levels were high and nearly disappeared in spring when IAA levels reached their minimum. In needles from declining fir trees or fir trees suffering from a strong S-impact in the field, IAA levels hardly increased with increasing needle age. It is suggested that in healthy trees high levels of IAA protect older needles from abscission and that the considerable losses of older needles of declining fir trees or of fir trees under S-impact are a consequence of the low levels of IAA found in older needles of such trees. The depth of penetration of Ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 300 and 320 nm) and visible (680 nm) light was measured in foliage of Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii using a fibre-optic microprobe. Measurements were made on foliage at four times during development: needles were sampled from within expanding buds (in bud); within 72 h of emergence from the bud scales (emergent); from elongating branches (elongating); and from foliage that emerged the previous summer (mature). Light attenuation in pre-emergent needles of both species was steep and showed strong wavelength dependence. Short wavelength 300-nm light was attenuated strongly in the developing epidermal layer, but a significant proportion of this potentially damaging UV-B radiation penetrated into the mesophyll. For A. lasiocarpa and P. engelmannii, 99% attenuation of 300-nm light occurred at 51 and 96 μm, respectively, well within the mesophyll. At this stage, however, the bud scales were opaque to light below 400nm. As the epidermal cell walls and cuticle continued to develop and chlorophyll accumulated following emergence from the bud scales, light attenuation, particularly of UV-B radiation, increased. Although no UV-B is transmitted through the epidermis-hypodermis of mature needles, small but measurable quantities of 300- and 320-nm light were measured in the photosynthetic mesophyll of post-emergent and elongating needles. Thus, shortly after emergence from the bud scales in mid-June to mid-July, when incident UV doses are highest, absorption of UV-B radiation by potentially sensitive chromophores in the mesophyll may disrupt physiological and developmental processes in these species. Soluble UV-absorbing pigments accumulated during needle maturation for P. engelmannii but not A. lasiocarpa, suggesting that, for A. lasiocarpa at least, the development of effective UV screening properties in the epidermis may not be related to the induction of soluble flavonoids.  相似文献

Predicted increases in the frequency and duration of drought are expected to negatively affect tree vitality, but we know little about how water shortage will influence needle anatomy and thereby the trees’ photosynthetic and hydraulic capacity. In this study, we evaluated anatomical changes in sun and shade needles of 20‐year‐old Norway spruce trees exposed to artificial drought stress. Canopy position was found to be important for needle structure, as sun needles had significantly higher values than shade needles for all anatomical traits (i.e., cross‐sectional needle area, number of tracheids in needle, needle hydraulic conductivity, and tracheid lumen area), except proportion of xylem area per cross‐sectional needle area. In sun needles, drought reduced all trait values by 10–40%, whereas in shade needles, only tracheid maximum diameter was reduced by drought. Due to the relatively weaker response of shade needles than sun needles in drought‐stressed trees, the difference between the two needle types was reduced by 25% in the drought‐stressed trees compared to the control trees. The observed changes in needle anatomy provide new understanding of how Norway spruce adapts to drought stress and may improve predictions of how forests will respond to global climate change.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the ecophysiological state of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) growing at different heights on one of the typical coastal sand dunes in the dune field situated in southwestern Estonia. Dependence of the anatomical structure, morphological parameters, nutrients accumulation and biochemical characteristics of needles on the location of the site on the dune and on the concentration of nutrients in soil and in needle tissues was established. Correlation analysis revealed the dependence of chlorophyll a on the concentration of N and Mg in soil as well as in needles. The mesophyll area and chlorophyll concentration in needles were smallest on the top of the dune. The proportion of epidermis in the total needle cross-section area from the top was a little larger than in the needles from the bottom; the epicuticular wax layer on needles decreased towards the top. The length of needles and shoots was the lowest on the top of the dune, where the growth substrate contains notably less nutrients and water than needed for optimum growth of trees. The t test showed statistically significant larger average tree-ring width of the pines growing at the bottom. The pines on the top and at the bottom of the dune were not sensitive to temperature conditions. The radial growth of pines on the top of the dune was positively correlated with the total precipitation of the previous year.  相似文献

Recent design-based stereological methods that can be applied to thick sections cut in an arbitrary direction are presented and their implementation for measuring mesophyll anatomical characteristics is introduced. These methods use software-randomized virtual 3D probes, such as disector and fakir test probes, in stacks of optical sections acquired using confocal microscopy. They enable unbiased estimations of the mean mesophyll cell volume, mesophyll cell number in a needle, and for the first time an internal surface area of needles or other narrow leaves directly from the fresh tissue cross-sections cut using a hand microtome. Therefore, reliable results can be obtained much faster than when using a standard microtechnical preparation. The proposed methods were tested on Norway spruce needles affected for 1 year by acid rain treatment. The effect of acid rain resulted in changes of mesophyll parameters: the ratio of intercellular spaces per mesophyll cell volume increased, while needle internal surface area, total number of mesophyll cells, and number of mesophyll cells per unit volume of a needle decreased in the treated needles.  相似文献

The morphological and functional organization of the needles of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Siberian fir (Abies sibirica Ledeb.), which differ in their light requirement were studied. The characteristic properties of the high-light-requiring pine included high rates of apparent photosynthesis and dark respiration, high assimilation number, numerous folds in mesophyll cell walls, and increased partial volume of intercellular spaces and hyaloplasm in the mesophyll. In the needles of shade-enduring fir, the higher efficiency of photosynthesis at low light intensities depended on the higher number of membranes and higher pigment content in the chloroplasts. The low assimilation number in fir indicated a shortage of photosynthetic reaction centers. The relative volume of the vascular cylinder and the vascular bundles in the needles and the partial volume of chloroplasts in the hyaloplasm, are considered as indices of the rate of assimilate export from mesophyll cells and their possible damping at different levels of structural organization.  相似文献

The aim of the investigation was to study if improved nutrient status in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L) trees would be reflected in decreased concentrations of arginine in the needles. The studies trees had imbalanced mineral nutrient composition and elevated needle arginine concentrations caused by long-term fertilization with N. Concentrations of arginine and mineral nutrients in needles were followed over three consecutive years of additional fertilization with N alone or with P, K, Mg and micronutrients in combination with and without N.Analysis of needle mineral concentrations suggested that there were deficiencies only in K and Mg. The N concentration increased both in trees fertilized with N alone and in trees fertilized with N in combination with mineral nutrients. In the control treatment and in trees fertilized with mineral nutrients other than N the N concentration remained fairly constant. The highest Ca/N, K/N and P/N ratios were found in trees fertilized with mineral nutrients other than N while the lowest ratios were found in trees fertilized with N alone. Arginine concentrations in needles from trees fertilized with N alone remained at a high level throughout the experiment while arginine concentrations in trees given the other treatments decreased. The results show that the mineral nutrient balance can be improved with appropriate fertilization and that this improvement is reflected in decreasing arginine levels. Furthermore the study demonstrates that when N supply is reduced the arginine concentration also decreases also as an effect of reduced N supply per se. The study also indicates that arginine may be a better measure of the N status in pine trees than total N.  相似文献
