Anthropogenic activities usually trigger changes in the population density of plants. Thus, land management practices can influence density‐dependent demographic parameters and species interactions. We investigated plant‐pollinator interactions and reproduction in Prosopis flexuosa, the largest tree species in the Central Monte desert of Argentina, an important economic and cultural resource for humans and a functionally prominent species. We hypothesized that reproductive output of P. flexuosa would be limited at low densities, and that exclusion of catle grazing would enhance population density and consequently interaction frequency with pollinators and reproductive success. The study was conducted in and around Ñacuñán Biosphere Reserve (Mendoza, Argentina), where cattle grazing has been excluded for over 35 years. Working in five pairs of protected and cattle grazed 1‐ha plots, we recorded density of adult trees, pollinator visitation frequency to inflorescences and seeds per inflorescence in focal trees. Adult tree density was higher in protected plots than in cattle grazed plots. Density of reproductive trees was positively correlated with seed production, suggesting positive density dependence for reproduction (Allee effect). Pollinator visitation to inflorescences and seed production was higher in protected plots compared with plots under cattle grazing. Suppression of anthropogenic degradation has resulted in higher adult tree density in protected plots, indirectly higher pollinator visitation to inflorescences and higher reproductive success of trees. Increased frequency of plant‐pollinator interactions and tree reproduction suggest success of management practices aimed at protecting P. flexuosa woodlands.  相似文献

The hypothesis that cattle browsing on inflorescences of the soaptree Yucca elata reduces reproductive success was investigated by comparing recruitment and population structure in six populations protected from grazing, six grazed during the flowering season and five grazed outside the flowering season. Cattle consumed 98% of inflorescences, which were found to be highly nutritious. Reduced recruitment in flower-grazed populations could not be attributed to reduced flower survival, as recruitment in non-flower grazed populations was also reduced. Changes in population structure were due to cattle browsing small caudices, including both genets and ramets. An alternate hypothesis of limited germination in soils compacted by cattle was not supported. Cattle browsing of inflorescences reduced reproductive effort, which may be due to the inability of the plants to resorb nutrients after flowering. Browsing also increased branching, probably through lack of apical dominance, whereas physical trampling increased procumbency. Cattle browsing implies a lack of genetic recruitment, possible local extinction of the yucca moth Tegeticula yuccasella, the exclusive pollinator of Y. elata, and local reduction in insect and bird biodiversity.  相似文献

We evaluated effects of soil texture and disturbance size on the successional dynamics of a semiarid grassland dominated by the perennial bunchgrass, Bouteloua gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag. ex Griffiths. A spatially-explicit gap dynamics simulation model was used to evaluate recovery patterns. The model simulates establishment, growth, and mortality of individual plants on an array of small plots through time at an annual time step. Each simulated disturbance consisted of a grid of plots of the same soil texture interconnected by processes associated with dispersal of B. gracilis seeds. Soil texture was incorporated into the model as effects on seed germination, seedling establishment, and subsequent growth of B. gracilis. Five soil texture classes and five disturbance sizes were simulated.Soil texture was more important to recovery of B. gracilis than either size of a disturbance or location of plots within a disturbance. Constraints on recruitment of seedlings had a greater effect on recovery than constraints associated with plant growth. Fastest recovery occurred on soils with the largest silt content, the variable that affects seedling establishment. Disturbances with slowest recovery were on soils with low silt contents, and either high or low water-holding capacity, the variable that affects plant growth. Biomass and recovery decreased as disturbance size increased, and as distance from a disturbed plot to the edge of the disturbance increased. In most cases, important interactions between soil texture and disturbance size on recovery were not found.  相似文献

We investigated factors influencing recruitment in the rare endemic shrub Acacia insolita subsp. recurva (Fabaceae) from the heavily cleared south‐west of Western Australia. We examined annual seed production over 4 years, including the impact of herbivory on reproductive output. Conversion of bud to fruit was low (overall 0.02%). The lack of significant difference in canopy dimensions between caged and uncaged plants suggested that vertebrate herbivore grazing was negligible, but invertebrate predation had a negative impact on seed production (loss of >80% of fruiting potential). Soil cores determined the presence of soil‐stored seeds and an experimental burn confirmed that plants are fire‐killed and can regenerate from the seed bank. This seed reserve was found to contain <5 seeds m?2, and both freshly collected seeds and seeds retrieved from the soil had high viability (99% vs. 91%) when subjected to a germination test. Seedling recruitment 29 months post‐fire resulted in a ratio of three seedlings for every adult killed by fire. We also compared reproductive success in this rare Acacia with its common conspecific and although the rare species produced more flowers, the success of flowering did not translate into better fruit set. We conclude that insect damage to reproductive branchlets and lack of appropriate disturbance are major factors constraining recruitment. Active site management may be required for the continued persistence of this fire‐dependent legume.  相似文献

We conducted a study to evaluate the relative importance of topography, grazing, the location of individual plants (microsite), and plant species in controlling the spatial variability of soil organic matter in shortgrass steppe ecosystems. We found that the largest spatial variation occurs in concert with topography and with microsite-scale heterogeneity, with relatively little spatial variability due to grazing or to plant species. Total soil C and N, coarse and fine particulate organic matter C and N, and potentially mineralizable C were significantly affected by topography, with higher levels in toeslope positions than in midslopes or summits. Soils beneath individual plants (Bouteloua gracilis and Opuntia polyacantha) were elevated by 2–3 cm relative to surrounding soils. All pools of soil organic matter were significantly higher in the raised hummocks directly beneath plants than in the soil surface of interspaces or this layer under plants. High levels of mineral material in the hummocks suggest that erosion is an important process in their formation, perhaps in addition to biotic accumulation of litter beneath individual plants. Over 50 y of heavy grazing by cattle did not have a significant effect on most of the soil organic matter pools we studied. This result was consistent with our hypothesis that this system, with its strong dominance of belowground organic matter, is minimally influenced by aboveground herbivory. In addition, soils beneath two of the important plant species of the shortgrass steppe, B. gracilis and O. polyacantha, differed little from one another. The processes that create spatial variability in shortgrass steppe ecosystems do not affect all soil organic matter pools equally. Topographic variability, developing over pedogenic time scales (centuries to thousands of years), has the largest effect on the most stable pools of soil organic matter. The influence of microsite is most evident in the pools of organic matter that turn over at time scales that approximate the life span of individual plants (years to decades and centuries).  相似文献

Euphorbia pedroi is a narrow endemic species with three known populations located in coastal areas of western Portugal. This study focused on the reproductive biology of this species from flowering to dispersal, aiming to identify the factors causing decrease in seed production potential and to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of seed production at the individual and population levels. The abortion of reproductive structures, particularly seeds, represented a major fraction of losses in the potential seed production of E. pedroi. Moth larvae destroyed a variable proportion of cyathia in a large number of plants from the two populations regardless of their degree of isolation. Furthermore, generalist and specialist pre-dispersal seed predators were responsible for temporally variable seed losses unrelated with variables indicative of plant size and fecundity, and showing no consistency at the individual level. Specialist seed-wasps inflicted the highest losses to E. pedroi and their impact was intimately associated with the magnitude of yearly variation in seed production. This finding highlights the role of the inter-annual variation in seed production as a key feature in this plant-seed predator system. The effect of the two groups of seed predators on the reproductive output of E. pedroi was additive and those insects do not seem to exert an important selective pressure on the traits studied. The proportion of intact seeds produced by E. pedroi differed between locations, but not between individuals within each population, highlighting the major contribution of larger plants to the seed pool.  相似文献

The fate of 100 seedling plants of Lolium perenne L. was studied over a period of 2 years in a field plot. The birth and death of tillers and the production of inflorescences was followed, and the components of seed yield were recorded in detail in the first year. The pattern of distribution of 14CO2 assimilated by the main shoot was examined at monthly intervals and during the first flowering season the distribution of 14C-assimilate from individual leaves and from the inflorescence was also studied. The capacity of individual tillers to assimilate 14CO2 prior to flowering and the re-distribution of previously accumulated assimilate during seed growth were also assessed. Plants died at a more or less constant rate with time and only 54 survived to the end of the 2–yr period. First year mortality was associated with severe grazing or cutting but in the second year the death of ungrazed plants was observed. There was great variability in the production of tillers by surviving plants. In both years the number of live tillers per plant increased from July to the end of April with particularly rapid tillering in March and April establishing the maximum value for each year. There was a similar phase of rapid tillering after flowering in July. The number of live tillers per plant declined by 50% during stem elongation and inflorescence emergence and the majority of dead tillers were young secondary (in the first year) and tertiary (in the second year) tillers with a mean age of 40 days. Such tillers had poor assimilatory capacity prior to the onset of death and were not supplied with assimilate from the main shoot. Most of the plants surviving at the end of the experiment flowered in both years and one quarter of the maximum number of live tillers per plant recorded in April of each year produced inflorescences. The earlier a tiller was produced the greater was its chance of flowering and the greater its production of seed. The greater weight of seed produced was associated with the development of more seed-bearing florets per spikelet. There was relatively little export of “C-assimilate from the flowering main shoot, and the lower internodes formed the major sink for post-anthesis assimilate. The growth of seeds appeared to be relatively independent of the leaves for current assimilate. There was some evidence that assimilate accumulated in lower internodes was remobilised and utilised in the growth of seeds and new tillers. Overall, the results confirm the view that the grass plant is a dynamic population of short-lived tillers and indicate that increasing competition for assimilate at flowering exerts a major influence on the production and survival of tillers.  相似文献

Abstract. Spatial heterogeneity, an important characteristic in semi‐arid grassland vegetation, may be altered through grazing by large herbivores. We used Moran's I, a measure of autocorrelation, to test the effect of livestock grazing on the fine scale spatial heterogeneity of dominant plant species in the shortgrass steppe of northeastern Colorado. Autocorrelation in ungrazed plots was significantly higher than in grazed plots for the cover of the dominant species Bouteloua gracilis, litter cover and density of other bunchgrasses. No species had higher autocorrelation in grazed compared to ungrazed sites. B. gracilis cover was significantly auto‐correlated in seven of eight 60‐yr ungrazed exclosures, four of six 8‐yr exclosures, and only three of eight grazed sites. Autocorrelograms showed that B. gracilis cover in ungrazed sites was frequently and positively spatially correlated at lag distances less than 5 m. B. gracilis cover was rarely autocorrelated at any sampled lag distance in grazed sites. The greater spatial heterogeneity in ungrazed sites appeared linked to patches characterized by uniformly low cover of B. gracilis and high cover of C3 grasses. This interpretation was supported by simple simulations that modified data from grazed sites by reducing the cover of B. gracilis in patches of ca. 8 m diameter and produced patterns quite similar to those observed in ungrazed sites. In the one exclosure where we intensively sampled soil texture, autocorrelation coefficients for sand content and B. gracilis cover were similar at lag distances up to 12 m. We suggest that the negative effect of sand content on B. gracilis generates spatial heterogeneity, but only in the absence of grazing. An additional source of heterogeneity in ungrazed sites may be the negative interaction between livestock exclusion and B. gracilis recovery following patchy disturbance.  相似文献

Summary In the annual herb Cassia fasciculata virtually every leaf subtends an axillary inflorescence. We examined the degree to which these leaf-inflorescence units (reproductive nodes) were physiologically independent of each other in the production of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Removal of up to 4 of every 5 inflorescences resulted in substantial increases in fruit and seed production by remaining, intact reproductive nodes. These increases nearly compensated for and manipulated reproductive nodes were associated with different vascular strands. When 2 of every 3 leaves were removed, fruit and seed production were reduced at both intact and defoliated reproductive nodes. Taken together, these results suggest that neighboring reproductive nodes in C. fasciculata are not physiologically independent of one another, and that competition among fruits and seeds for parental resources occurs over several reproductive nodes.Scientific contribution no. 1595 from the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station  相似文献

Sexual reproduction is important for the growth of populations and the maintenance of genetic diversity. Several steps are involved in the sexual reproduction pathway of plants: the production of flowers, the production of seeds and the establishment of seedlings from seeds. In this paper we quantify the relative importance and spatiotemporal variability of these different steps for four grassland perennials: Centaurea jacea, Cirsium dissectum, Hypochaeris radicata and Succisa pratensis. We compared undisturbed meadows with meadows where the top soil layer had been removed as a restoration measure. Data on the number of flower heads per flowering rosette, the numbers of flowers and seeds per flower head, and the seedling establishment probabilities per seed were collected by field observations and experiments in several sites and years. Combination of these data shows that H. radicata and S. pratensis have higher recruitment rates (1.9 and 3.3 seedlings per year per flowering rosette, respectively) than the more clonal C. dissectum and C. jacea (0.027 and 0.23, respectively). Seedling establishment is the major bottleneck for successful sexual reproduction in all species. Large losses also occurred due to failing seed set in C. dissectum. Comparison of the coefficients of variation per step in space and time revealed that spatiotemporal variability was largest in seedling establishment, followed closely by flower head production and seed set.  相似文献

Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni has sporophytic self-incompatibility and this may lead to poor seed yield and quality, which are obstacles to large-scale crop establishment. This research investigated the influence of insect pollinators and the harvesting time on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the ripe seeds. A pot trial under open field conditions was established to evaluate the abundance of insect pollinators and three harvesting times on the production of ripe seeds, germination percentage, mean germination time and thousand seed weight (TSW) in 36 F1 open-pollinated genotypes. Large variability in the number of corymbs of capitula, flowering time, reproductive period and seed yield was observed among the genotypes. Genotypes with promising phenological and reproductive properties were identified. The worst germination percentage and TSW were recorded in the latest harvest. Significant linear regressions were found among the investigated parameters (insect number, germination percentage, TSW, seeds yield per plant and cycle length), confirming complex interactions on the yield and quality of stevia seeds. Results indicate that earlier flowering genotypes produced higher seed quantity, due to favourable weather conditions during the reproductive phase. Moreover, cross-pollination and the insect abundance, as Apidae and Syrphidae, play a crucial role for enhancing the stevia seed yield and quality.  相似文献

Regeneration is known to be limited at many temperate tree lines, but very little data is available on the impacts of altitude and anthropogenic disturbance on regeneration patterns along tropical tree lines. The study focused on the reproductive traits of two Polylepis species in the Páramo de Papallacta in Ecuador along an altitudinal gradient, and involved different intensities of cattle trampling within subsequent altitudinal ranges. We analyzed flowering, fruit set, seed viability, germination, and seedling establishment as well as stand structure of Polylepis incana and P. pauta. The numbers of P. incana inflorescences and seedlings per m2 showed a marginally significant decrease with increasing altitude. Mean tree height was significantly lower at higher altitudes, while stem number increased. The number of P. pauta inflorescences also decreased significantly upslope. In both forest types, trampling was found to have a positive impact on seedling abundance, presumably due to the removal of the litter layer. Thus, there was no evidence of negative effects of moderate cattle grazing on both tree line species. However, sapling establishment was minimal inside the forest stands at all altitudes and grazing levels, and we consequently observed a low proportion of narrow stems within all investigated forests. Our results show that, along with vegetative growth limitations of adult trees, important regeneration traits such as seedling and inflorescence numbers are also influenced by altitude, which might contribute to the formation of the upper tree line. Nevertheless, recruitment in the forest interior was low overall indicating that further factors, such as light conditions, affect regeneration of the studied species.  相似文献

Abstract Cryptostegia grandiflora and Ziziphus mauritiana are exotic shrubs that are invading tropical woodlands of northern Australia. Although they are widespread, they currently occupy only small proportions of their respective potential ranges. Large C. grandiflora can produce more than 8000 wind-dispersed seeds in a single reproductive episode and can set seed at least twice per year. More than 90% of seeds will germinate within 10 days of moisture becoming available. Few, if any, seeds survive for more than 12 months in the soil. Large Z. mauritiana can produce more than 5000 fruits per year. The fruit is a drupe that contains a single seed (sometimes two) enclosed in a woody endocarp. Less than 10% of fresh seeds will germinate without removal of the endocarp. Removal of the endocarp increased germination to 56%. Less than 10% of seeds of Z. mauritiana remain viable after burial in the soil for 12 months. Seeds of Z. mauritiana are dispersed by several mammalian vectors, including wallabies and feral pigs, but domestic cattle are probably the major means by which large numbers of seeds reach new sites. Propagules pass intact through the digestive tract of cattle, feral pigs and wallabies and contain viable seeds that germinate more readily than seed in fresh intact fruits. Controlling movement of cattle that have had recent access to mature fruit of Z. mauritiana could significantly reduce the likelihood of new infestations. For both species, management that reduces seed production will be important for containing spread.  相似文献

  • Results suggest an annual flowering pattern with one flowering peak; flowers were diurnal, showing partial dichogamy (protandry)‐herkogamy, anthers and stigma become mature before floral aperture, which could lead to self‐pollination, nectar is produced during anthesis, varying in volume and total sugar concentration during the day; fruits and seeds were produced in all experimental crosses (cross‐pollination, obligated cross‐pollination, assisted and unassisted selfing, geitonogamy and apomixis), as well as high percentage seed germination.
  • Several species of Aechmea are reportedly self‐compatible and autogamous, as suggested by results of selfing and non‐assisted selfing crosses, but these results are negated by the presence of apomixis, indicating that the species is apomictic. This is the first report of this breeding system for subgenus Aechmea and the sixth for Bromeliaceae. Polyembryony is here suggested for the first time in this genus and family based on the fact that more seeds were recorded that expected based on ovule numbers. Finally, when performing experimental crosses, estimating reproductive success based on number of seeds is a better approach than number of fruits, due to the effect of pseudogamy.

Summary In a study of partial self-compatbility inBrassica oleracea, flower number, seeded siliqua and seed production were recorded on self- and cross-pollinated inflorescences of the progenies of a half diallel between five unrelated inbred plants homozygous for the same recessiveS-allele.On cross-pollinated inflorescences significant amounts of additively controlled genetic variation were found for seed set per flowering site and its two components, seeded siliquae per flower and seeds per seeded siliquae. Considerable heterosis and gene interaction were also present and a simple additive dominance model did not fully explain the observed variation.On self-pollinated inflorescences, additive gene action was absent for the seed production variates although differences between progenies were highly significant and heterosis was present. Complex gene interactions were considered to be responsible. The characteristics of the method of assessment used and the relationship between self- and outcross seed production are discussed. It appears unlikely that the component lines could be selected for reduced self seed set, but selection for higher outcross seed set may be possible.  相似文献

Summary

Life history, reproductive performance, changes in plant numbers, and damage due to grazing were recorded from populations of Gentiana nivalis L. at one of its only two stations in Scotland. Up to 50 per cent of plants were biennials. These were larger than the annuals, produced more seeds, but were grazed preferentially and had poor survival. The production of seed capsules by plants exposed to grazing, mainly by sheep, was less than that of plants on inaccessible cliffs. Overall annual seed production within the main population was 3–4 seeds per m2, some 150–200 times greater than the density of the plants. Seeds were deeply dormant and difficult to germinate in the laboratory. The density of G. nivalis was relatively stable within the largest and most dense population, although plants migrated within the area of suitable habitat from one year to the next. Numbers were unstable within small, sparse populations: plants disappeared one year only to reappear a year later. Viable seeds stored in the soil may enable G. nivalis to recolonize rapidly whenever conditions are suitable, thus decreasing the probability of extinction.  相似文献

The effect of predispersal seed predation by Bruchus atomarius (Bruchidae, Coleoptera) on individual performance and population dynamics of the perennial forest herb, Lathyrus vernus (Leguminosae), was investigated in 11 permanent plots over 4 years. Seed predation and parameters describing intra-specific neighbour distance, plant size, inflorescence size, flowering phenology and current and previous herbivore damage were measured on all plants. In addition, demographic information from all plots was analysed using transition matrix population models in order to estimate the influence of seed predation on population growth rates. Predispersal seed predation rates differed significantly among years. Plot averages ranged from 0 to 83.7%. However, most of the variation occurred among individuals. Within individuals there was no consistency in predation rates among years. Exposure to herbivory, plant size and flowering phenology did not affect predation rates but individuals with larger inflorescences suffered from significantly higher predation. Seed predation in L. vernus was not influenced by neighbour distances of individual plants but it was positively correlated with the average density of seeds within plots, suggesting that seed predation is density dependent at the patch level. The reduction in population growth rate due to seed predation ranged from 0 to 7.6%. The sensitivity of population growth rate to reductions in seed production varied considerably among years and plots. This variation was mainly due to differences in the reproductive value of seeds and seedlings. The intensity of seed predation over the range found was not correlated with changes in population growth rate. The results of this study suggest that the influence of external factors, like seed predation, on population growth rate largely depends on the demographic transition rates in the investigated population.  相似文献

This paper investigated the effects of grazing by Galerucella nipponensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on growth and seed production of its host plant Trapa japonica (Trapaceae). A water tank experiment demonstrated that the new rosette leaves grazed upon by the beetles had a shorter life span than those of ungrazed rosettes. In ponds, severely grazed T. japonica rosettes produced more new leaves than slightly grazed rosettes. The period of seed production was delayed in years when leaves were severely grazed during the flowering seasons. Grazing peaked in later growing seasons when rosettes produce seeds. The ratio of seed production in the latter half of the peak to that in the early half was higher under severe grazing conditions than slight or moderate grazing conditions. A higher density of seeds in ponds in the current year tended to produce more abundant rosettes in the following spring. These results suggest that the herbivory of G. nipponensis induces compensatory reproduction of T. japonica in a complicated manner.  相似文献

During a six-year period, changes in the composition of dominant plant species of importance to foraging birds in a salt marsh on the Swedish west coast were followed inside and outside exclosures to document effects of grazing on herbage quality and seed production. Since marshes provide an important habitat for foraging geese and ducks, it was of interest to determine how cattle grazing would affect herbage production inAgrostis stolonifera andPuccinellia maritima and seed and root-tuber production inScirpus maritimus. Measurements of cover and height in permanent plots revealed that a wetter weather type favouredAgrostis, probably through reduced salinity, at the expense ofPuccinellia, which was the most favoured food of both cattle and birds.Agrostis out-competedPuccinellia when grazing pressure was low. Seed production inScirpus maritimus was reduced by cattle grazing, particularly whenPhragmites australis formed part of the vegetation. In the absence of cattle grazing, both herbage- and seed producing plants were gradually reduced, andPhragmites increased. Since high herbage consumption and high seed production are mutually exclusive, grazing rotation in combination with mowing is suggested as a management strategy.  相似文献

Populations of grasses exposed to grazing by vertebrates often exhibit reduced stature, increased tillering, reduced flowering, and other morphological differences which distinguish them from ungrazed populations. These differences frequently are interpreted as an adaptive response that reduces grazing damage; however, there are few experimental tests of this hypothesis. This paper describes a field experiment designed to determine whether morphological variation among genotypes of the grass Bouteloua gracilis is related to variation in their responses to grazing. Eleven genotypes differing in morphological and reproductive characters were transplanted into a shortgrass steppe community near Fort Collins, Colorado. Replicates of each genotype were subjected to clipping treatments intended to realistically simulate three grazing intensities. After two growing seasons, different genotypes still maintained significant differences in a wide range of morphological and demographic characters. However, there were few significant effects of grazing treatment, and no significant genotype×treatment interactions. These results suggest that for B. gracilis clipped in simulation of natural grazing, defoliation has few short-term effects on fitness components, and intrapopulation morphological variation has few consequences for defoliation resistance.
