The dynamic equilibrium hypothesis proposes that hybrid zones are stabilized by a balance between dispersal and selection against hybrids. A key prediction of this hypothesis is that hybrids should have lower fitness than either parental taxon, regardless of habitat. Hybrid big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata × ssp. vaseyana) in two narrow hybrid zones do show greatly decreased recruitment. Hybrids in one zone also show increased browsing by grasshoppers, while those in the other zone have increased numbers of aphids. Overall herbivore loads, however, are not greater on the hybrids than on the parental subspecies. Browsing by mule deer is greatest on ssp. vaseyana in both hybrid zones. Incidence of galls is also greatest on ssp. vaseyana in one hybrid zone. Moreover, browsing by Artemisia weevils is greatest on ssp. tridentata in one hybrid zone. Hybrids produce more flowers than either ssp. tridentata or ssp. vaseyana, while seed production rates of hybrids do not differ from those of the parental taxa. Finally, hybrid seeds germinate as well as those of ssp. tridentata and better than those of ssp. vaseyana. Thus, our data do not support the dynamic equilibrium hypothesis.  相似文献

Samples of Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula, A. tridentata ssp. tridentata, ssp. wyomingensis, ssp. vaseyana and ssp. vaseyana f. spiciformis were collected from various locations in Montana and analyzed by TLC for their sesquiterpene lactone content. Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata and ssp. wyomingensis are distinct morphologically and chemically, whereas ssp. vaseyana has three distinct chemical groups not yet separated morphologically. Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula and A. tridentata ssp. vaseyana f. spiciformis are easily separated by morphology but have identical TLC patterns. It has been further shown that the sesquiterpene lactones produced for a particular species or subspecies are the same regardless of the time of the year collected, although the quantity varies from winter to summer.  相似文献

Communities dominated by Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata, A. tridentata ssp. wyomingensis, and A. tridentata ssp. vaseyana, found in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado, were evaluated for life history strategy. Species cover data were analyzed using Grime's (1984) triangular model. Then a canonical analysis was conducted to obtain an ordination of relative species cover. Results from these two analyses were then used to infer strategy differences among life histories of subspecies, based on the respective plant community associates. These differences were found to be consistent with the divergent evolution assumed to have occurred in this species. The primary ordination axis was interpreted as an elevation-moisture gradient. Further analysis of soil data by factor analysis also separated the three Artemisia subspecies along a soil texture gradient.  相似文献

The leaves, litter, and soil from within a community of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana were analyzed for secondary metabolic products. Methacrolein, five monterpenes, three sesquiterpene lactones, six coumarins, and one flavonoid were identified in the leaves; the contents of the litter were nearly identical. Soils collected directly beneath the shrubs contained the three sesquiterpene lactones, two coumarins and an unknown flavonoid. The litter and water extracts of the litter inhibited the germination of sagebrush seeds. Soils charged with monoterpenes from sagebrush leaves also inhibited seed germination. In addition, the monoterpene contents from eight sagebrush taxa collected from Western Montana are reported.  相似文献

Topographic control of vegetation in a mountain big sagebrush steppe   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mountain big sagebrush steppes in Wyoming have strong spatial patterning associated with topography. We describe the spatial variability of vegetation in a sagebrush steppe, and test the relationship between topography and vegetation using canonical correlation. Results of the analysis suggest that the main control over vegetation distribution in this system is wind exposure. Exposed sites are characterized by cushion plant communities and Artemisia nova, and less exposed sites by the taller sagebrush species Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana. Topographic depressions and leeward slopes are characterized by aspen stands and nivation hollows. Measurements of soil microclimate suggest that a major influence of topographic position on vegetation is snow redistribution and its effect on soil moisture and temperature.Abbreviations ARNO Artemisia nova - ARTRW Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis - ARTRV Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana - PUTR Purshia tridentata - RIP riparian community - POTR Populus tremuloides - NIV nivation hollow community  相似文献

Much of the variation in hexaploid Atriplex tridentata appears to have come from tetraploid A. canescens by introgression. Among the recombinations, three types appear to have become established as new, adaptive, hexaploid derivatives. One of these is a robust, woody form near Knolls, Utah, another is a widespread, low-growing, shrubby form in Lander County, Nevada, the other is an upright bushy, canescens-like form near Grantsville, Utah.  相似文献

Question: What is the impact of prescribed fires on the cover and composition of vegetation in Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana steppe? Location: United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, United States Sheep Experiment Station, eastern Idaho (44°14′44′’ N, 112°12′47′’ W). Methods: Multiple prescribed fires were lit in 2002 and 2003 in an Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana (mountain big sagebrush) steppe ecosystem that was relatively free of exotic plants. Measurements of cover components and plant species frequencies were taken pre‐ and for 2 to 3 years post‐fire. Results: Cover of forbs and grasses returned to pre‐fire levels after two years. Shrub cover declined from 36 to 6% in the first year post‐fire. Fire reduced the frequencies of three species, A. tridentata ssp. vaseyana, Festuca idahoensis, and Cordylanthus ramosus, of rangeland plants. Frequencies of four plant species, Hesperostipa comata, Polygonum douglasii, Chenopodium fremontii and Chenopodium leptophyllum increased, but only P. douglasii increased for more than a year. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that in an Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana steppe ecosystem without significant non‐native species or anthropogenic disturbances vegetative cover and species composition of the herbaceous community are only minimally altered by fire. The herbaceous component returned to pre‐fire conditions within three years of a fire.  相似文献

Arceuthobium is a well defined genus of obligate parasites of conifers. Assessment of taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships in this group is difficult owing to morphological reductions and complex host relationships. In the present study, genetic relationships within and among 19 taxa were examined using starch gel electrophoresis of triploid seed endosperm tissue. Allelic frequency data for eleven polymorphic loci were derived from analysis of 40 natural populations collected from the U.S. and Mexico. The genus showed remarkably high levels of genetic diversity: averaged across the 19 taxa, 66.7% of the loci were polymorphic with an average of 2.23 alleles per locus. This level of polymorphism is approximately double the average value reported for many dicotyledons and stands in contrast to the overall uniform morphology of these parasites. Unweighted pair group cluster analysis (UPGMA) of genetic similarity measures was conducted for all sampled populations and the results compared to a phenetic system of classification for the genus. Similarities between the two studies include the recognition of two subgenera based upon the segregation of the verticillately branched Arceuthobium americanum from the remainder of the taxa examined. Analysis of isozyme data supported a grouping of six taxa: A. vaginatum ssp. cryptopodum, A. vaginatum ssp. durangense, A. gillii, A. rubrum, A. divaricatum, and A. douglasii. The placement of the latter three taxa in other groups by phenetic criteria provides evidence for molecular divergence not seen using morphological features. The Campylopodum group of taxa comprised eleven members that were linked at similarity values of 80% or greater. Populations were not unambiguously grouped according to species as defined by the phenetic study or at similarity levels comparable to other well defined species in this study. This group is either not reproductively isolated or molecular differentiation is cryptic due to rapid adaptive radiation onto numerous host tree species.  相似文献

Variation in the abiotic environment and host plant preferences can affect the composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) assemblages. This study analyzed the AMF taxa present in soil and seedlings of Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis collected from sagebrush steppe communities in southwestern Idaho, USA. Our aims were to determine the AMF diversity within and among these communities and the extent to which preferential AMF–plant associations develop during seedling establishment. Mycorrhizae were identified using molecular methods following DNA extraction from field and pot culture samples. The extracted DNA was amplified using Glomeromycota specific primers, and identification of AMF was based on phylogenetic analysis of sequences from the large subunit-D2 rDNA region. The phylogenetic analyses revealed seven phylotypes, two within the Claroideoglomeraceae and five within the Glomeraceae. Four phylotypes clustered with known species including Claroideoglomus claroideum, Rhizophagus irregularis, Glomus microaggregatum, and Funneliformis mosseae. The other three phylotypes were similar to several published sequences not included in the phylogenetic analysis, but all of these were from uncultured and unnamed glomeromycetes. Pairwise distance analysis revealed some phylotypes with high genetic variation. The most diverse was the phylotype that included R. irregularis, which contained sequences showing pairwise differences up to 12 %. Most of the diversity in AMF sequences occurred within sites. The smaller genetic differentiation detected among sites was correlated with differences in soil texture. In addition, multiplication in pot cultures led to differentiation of AMF communities. Comparison of sequences obtained from the soil with those from A. tridentata roots revealed no significant differences between the AMF present in these samples. Overall, the sites sampled were dominated by cosmopolitan AMF taxa, and young seedlings of A. tridentata ssp. wyomingensis were colonized in relation to the abundance of these taxa in the soil.  相似文献

The paper presents results of morphometric analysis of Anthyllis vulneraria L. in Poland based on 828 herbarium specimens. This study investigates five taxa which have been recognized in Poland: Anthyllis vulneraria L. ssp. vulneraria, Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. polyphylla (DC.) Nyman, A. vulneraria ssp. maritima (Schweigg.) Corb., A. vulneraria ssp. alpestris Asch. et Graebn. and A. vulneraria ssp. carpatica (Pant.) Nyman as well as three intermediate taxa of presumably hybrid origin. Multivariate statistical analyses of 12 quantitative and 10 qualitative characteristics revealed conspicuous variation within A. vulneraria. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), correspondence analysis (CA) and discriminant analysis (DA) proved the taxonomic usefulness of quantitative characteristics such as number of rosette leaves, calyx length, inflorescence length, the ratio of leaf length/width, bract length as well as qualitative characteristics such as stem hairiness, calyx colour, calyx indumentum, distances between stem leaves and form of rosette leaves. The issues concerning intermediate morphotypes occurring in Poland and their status are discussed. Finally, a key for determination of taxa within A. vulneraria in Poland and distribution maps based on the material examined are provided.  相似文献

Six taxa of Capsicum were chosen for a comparative chemosystematic study. A “key” individual from each taxon was selected for intensive chemical investigation. Thirteen flavonoids were isolated from leaf material and characterized by paper chromatography and absorption spectroscopy. The C-glycosylflavones vitexin and isovitexin, and orientin and iso-orientin, as well as O-glycosides of the flavones apigenin, luteolin, and chrysoeriol, were isolated from the key individuals. Chromatographic analysis of collections from various regions of South America, Central America, and Mexico showed in general that flavonoid variability is more common in cultivated taxa than in wild. Three groups of Capsicum were recognized and the main systematic conclusions were: (1) The white-flowered taxa in Group I, C. baccatum var. baccatum and C. baccatum var. pendulum, have identical flavonoids, corroborating previous conclusions that they are one species. The absence of chrysoeriol in this group separates it from Groups II and III. (2) The purple-to-white-flowered C. eximium var. eximium and C. eximium var. lomenlosum, Group II, have a complex flavonoid chemistry which appears to link Groups I and III. (3) Two purple-flowered species, C. cardenasii and C. pubescens, Group III, are chemically distinct from the other taxa examined.  相似文献

The 2C amounts of DNA for 12 taxa of the section Arachis nom. nud. of the genus Arachis L. were determined using cytophotometric techniques. The diploid taxa ranged from 4.92 to 5.98 pg of DNA per cell. The species of the diploid series Annuae Krap. & Greg. nom. nud. averaged ca. 1 pg less DNA per cell than the taxa of the diploid series Perennes Krap. & Greg. nom. nud. No significant differences were found between taxa within these two series. The tetraploid taxa ranged from 10.36 to 11.35 pg of DNA per cell. Within the tetraploid series Amphiploides Krap. & Greg. nom. nud. differences were found between A. monticola Krap. & Rig. and A. hypogaea L. The two subspecies of A. hypogaea, ssp. hypogaea and ssp. fastigiata Waldron, were found to differ significantly in their 2C amounts of DNA. The implications of the cytophotometric data on the chromosomal evolution of this section are discussed.  相似文献

Seedling survival ofArtemisia tridentata ssp.tridentata (basin big sagebrush) was studied during 1984 and 1986 on a semi-arid rangeland in central Utah, USA. Seedlings were mapped in ungrazed pastures and observed on a 10 day interval for survival. Available resource area around individual seedlings was calculated using Theissen polygons. Over 90% of the naturally-occurring seedlings occurred in polygons of 150 mm2 or less. Seedlings with available areas greater than 300 mm2 were more likely to survive than seedlings with less resource area. Differences in overall seedling survival in different study sites were noted. Survival was similar for all seedlings with less than 50 mm2 available area. In 1986, precipitation and seedling survival were considerably lower than in 1984. Even in 1986, however, seedling survival in polygons greater than 300 mm2 was always higher than for seedlings in smaller polygons. Survival patterns over each growing season closely followed the precipitation patterns.Mortality of first yearArtemisia seedlings seemed to be density independent at the beginning of the growing season. Patterns of survival for seedlings in different available area classes were similar for the first 20 days after emergence. Survival rates were then consistently higher for seedlings with more than 300 mm2 resource area. Changes in survival rates were linked to differences in pastures and the presence of nurse plants.  相似文献

Polygonum sect.Tovara includes three controversial species;P. virginianum, P. filiforme, andP. neofiliforme. The flavonoid chemistry of these was examined to provide additional information on their delimitation and levels of differentiation. Eight flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified, all of which were 3-O-glycosides of the flavonols kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin, and their acylated derivatives. Although they exhibit relatively simple flavonoid profiles, the three taxa are readily distinguished by their flavonoid constituents. In addition, they show fundamental differences in flavonol types and glycosylation patterns. These results, in conjunction with evidence from the morphology, strongly suggest thatP. virginianum, P. filiforme, andP. neofiliforme are closely allied but distinct species.  相似文献

The phloem of Etapteris leclercqii and Botryopteris tridentata petioles is described from Lower Pennsylvanian coal balls. Petioles of B. tridentata are characterized in transverse section by an omega-shaped xylem trace, a phloem zone which extends from 2-10 cells in width, and 2-parted cortex. Etapteris leclercqii petioles exhibit a 4–9 cell-wide phloem zone surrounding the central clepsydroid xylem mass, and a 3-parted cortex. In both taxa a 1–2 cell layer parenchyma sheath separates the xylem from the extra-xylary tissues. The phloem of both species consists of sieve elements that average about 20 μm in diam by 200 μm in length in Botryopteris, and 100 μm in length in Etapteris, with horizontal-slightly oblique end walls. In transmitted light, the radial walls of the sieve elements form an irregular reticulate pattern enclosing elliptical lighter areas. With the scanning electron microscope, these areas appear as horizontal-slightly oblique furrows on the cell wall, with many small indentations lining the furrows. These indentations, because of their regular occurrence and size (from a few fractions of a micron up to 1.0 μm in diam), are interpreted as sieve pores, and the elliptical areas that enclose them as sieve areas. The phloem of E. leclercqii and B. tridentata is compared with that described for other fossil genera and with that of extant ferns.  相似文献

Thirteen flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified from five Korean species in theA. jaluense complex; they were glycosylated derivatives of the flavonols kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin, and of the flavone apigenin. The flavonoid data revealed the presence of two entities in the complex in Korea; one includesA. jaluense s. str. and the other includes the remaining four species which have identical flavonoid profiles. Based on these results, in conjunction with evidence from the morphology, it is suggested that the taxa should be recognized as two sub-species ofA. jaluense s. l. The flavonoid data also provide strong evidence for the occurrence of hybridization betweenA. jaluense s. str. andA. japonicum subsp.napiforme at Mt. Chiri in southern Korea.  相似文献

This paper describes our study of the flavonoid chemistry of the Menyanthaceae, which included Menyanthes, Fauria (= Nephrophyllidium), Liparophyllum (all monotypic), nine species of Nymphoides, and 11 species of Villarsia. The flavonoid profiles are based upon kaempferol, 7-O-methylkaempferol, quercetin, 7-O-methylquercetin, isorhamnetin, 3,7-di-O-methylquercetin, and 7,3′-di-O-methylquercetin, although not all taxa exhibit all of these aglycones. These compounds occur as a complex mixture of 3-O-mono- and 3-O-diglycosides; 4′-O-glucosides were restricted to four species of Nymphoides. Some acylated glycosides were also observed. The presence of flavonols and absence of both C-glycosylflavones and xanthones set the Menyanthaceae apart from the Gentianaceae, the family with which it is most often allied. Flavonoid data do not allow assignment of the Menyanthaceae with surety to either the Gentianales or Solanales. The flavonoid profiles of Liparophyllum and Fauria are unique within the family and do not support a close affinity of the latter genus to Menyanthes. A close relationship between Nymphoides and Villarsia, suggested on morphological grounds, is supported by the flavonoid data. Flavonoids support the view, based upon morphology, that the South African Villarsia capensis is more closely related to eastern Australian Villarsia species than to Western Australian ones that are geographically closer. Segregation of Nymphoides fallax from other Meso-American and Caribbean taxa is supported by the flavonoid data. Flavonoid data also support the view that N. indica is a circumtropical taxon not deserving separate species status in the New World.  相似文献

A compromise classification of the genus Zea, reflecting both phylogeny and practical needs, recognizes six taxa, as follows: Section Luxuriantes : Zea perennis. Zea diploperennis, Zea luxurians. Section Zea : Zea mays ssp. mexicana (Neo-volcanic Plateau), Zea mays ssp. parviglumis Iltis & Doebley ssp. n. var. parviglumis (Rio Balsas drainage, Pacific slope from Guerrero to Jalisco), Zea mexicana ssp. parviglumis var. huehuetenangensis Iltis & Doebley var. n. (Pacific slope, western Guatemala, Prov. Huehuetenango), Zea mays ssp. mays. The new subspecies is distinguished by smaller spikelets and rachis joints, the varieties by different habitats, blooming dates and their genetic behavior in relation to cultivated Zea mays. Zea mays ssp. mexicana is the ancestor of corn.  相似文献
