Abstract

A fossil of Anthelia from late-Pleistocene sediments at Tom Swamp, Massachusetts, consisted of a portion of a plant bearing the characteristic three rows of isomorphic, deeply bifid leaves. The fossil Anthelia indicates the existence of areas of late-lying snow in an essentially treeless, late-Pleistocene landscape. Associated bryophyte (mainly moss) and tracheophyte fossils establish the presence of additional hygric and mesic habitat types.

The occurrence of Anthelia and other leafy liverwort fossils in the basal inorganic sediments at Tom Swamp is unusual. Features of these fossils suggest that the translucent quality of some of the fragments and their small size (1 mm or smaller), which relates to fragmentation during transport, diagenesis and extraction (the breakage resulting from a weak middle lamella between the cells), may be reasons for the rarity of Pleistocene and Holocene fossils of liverworts.

Photosynthetic and respiratory rates were studied in Cetraria islandica, C. nivalis, and Cladonia rangiferina in the alpine zone of Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. Measurements were made in the field using an infrared gas analyzer; light, temperature, and thallus water content were varied. In all species, considerable reduction in photosynthesis and respiration occurred with drying, more rapidly in photosynthesis than respiration. Optimal photosynthetic rates in all 3 species occurred at 15–20 C with light levels of 1,600 ft-c. Light compensation points ranged from 200 to 350 ft-c. Optimal respiratory rates were attained at 15 C in the 2 species of Cetraria and at 20 C in Cladonia. The data indicate that these wide-ranging, arctic-alpine and arctic-temperate lichens on Mt. Washington are quite well adapted to a moist, foggy environment with cool temperatures and low light levels, conditions which predominate in summer.  相似文献

The morphology, gross cytology, reproduction, and habitat ecology are described for Derbesia marina based on observations of New England field populations and laboratory cultures of this plant. These data, and additional observations on cultures of several other species of Derbesia from elsewhere and on type and other important collections, have been used to evaluate the systematic relationship of New England Derbesia with other species of this genus. The single Derbesia species in New England is referred to D. marina. The systematic criteria previously used to distinguish species within Derbesia are reviewed and interpreted within the context of the present investigation. In systematic studies, we stress the importance of the use of sporangial and chloroplast morphology, the presence or absence of pyrenoids, and reproductive history. Two types of life history are reported for D. marina in New England: (1) A form of D. marina collected at 20 m reproduces directly with stephanokontous zoospores growing into sporophytic plants of Derbesia morphologically identical to their parent thalli. (2) On the other hand, at least some New England, populations of D. marina have retained the genetic potential for producing a sexual generation (Halicystis ovalis), even though the latter is unknown for the coast of northeastern North America.3 Gametophytes (H. ovalis) were produced directly from enlargement and subsequent differentiation of uncleaved lateral sporangia in 2 cultured populations of New England D. marina. A single female and numerous male vesicles formed in this manner produced gametes, but neither fertilization nor parthenogenesis occurred; thus the entire life history was not completed in culture. The occurrence of the directly reproducing deep water form of D. marina is presented as evidence for speciation of a sporophyte (Derbesia) independent of its alternate gametophyte (Halicystis). An hypothesis is advanced to explain the source and means for expression of genetic variability necessary for speciation in a population of nonsexually reproducing Derbesia.  相似文献

The fine structure of the primary nucleus in Bryopsis hypnoides was compared with that of the primary nucleus in Acetabularia calyculus and Batophora oerstedii. In Bryopsis the mature primary nucleus contains a peripheral reticulum composed of 4–6 layers of 200 A diameter fibrils. The nuclear membrane has numerous nuclear pores that are located adjacent to the openings in the layers of the reticulum. Each nuclear pore is constituted of peripheral globular elements and a central granule. Although pores of similar structure are present in the nuclear envelope of Acetabularia and Batophora, a fibrillar reticulum is absent.  相似文献

Background

Bryopsis hypnoides Lamouroux is a siphonous green alga, and its extruded protoplasm can aggregate spontaneously in seawater and develop into mature individuals. The chloroplast of B. hypnoides is the biggest organelle in the cell and shows strong autonomy. To better understand this organelle, we sequenced and analyzed the chloroplast genome of this green alga.

Principal Findings

A total of 111 functional genes, including 69 potential protein-coding genes, 5 ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes were identified. The genome size (153,429 bp), arrangement, and inverted-repeat (IR)-lacking structure of the B. hypnoides chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) closely resembles that of Chlorella vulgaris. Furthermore, our cytogenomic investigations using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and southern blotting methods showed that the B. hypnoides cpDNA had multimeric forms, including monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer, and even higher multimers, which is similar to the higher order organization observed previously for higher plant cpDNA. The relative amounts of the four multimeric cpDNA forms were estimated to be about 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 based on molecular hybridization analysis. Phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated alignment of chloroplast protein sequences suggested that B. hypnoides is sister to all Chlorophyceae and this placement received moderate support.

Conclusion

All of the results suggest that the autonomy of the chloroplasts of B. hypnoides has little to do with the size and gene content of the cpDNA, and the IR-lacking structure of the chloroplasts indirectly demonstrated that the multimeric molecules might result from the random cleavage and fusion of replication intermediates instead of recombinational events.  相似文献

Diatom samples collected from Kawaikoi Stream differ in species composition and relative abundance from those in Kokee Stream. Kuwaikoi collects drainage from the Alakai Swamp, which developed on a 1200–1500 m elevation ridge of Mt. Waialeale extending at a right angle to the NE winds. Kokee lies about 2000 m further west at about 1100 m elevation. Frustulia and Eunotia species characteristic of low conductivity waters predominate. Greater diversity of Achnanthes, Navicula, Pinnularia and Surirella taxa occurs in the somewhat more conductive waters of Kokee. The morphological species observed bear a close, but not exact, resemblance to mainland taxa described in the literature. Morphological variations are documented using light and scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Multigene phylogenetic analyses were directed at resolving the earliest divergences in the red algal subclass Rhodymeniophycidae. The inclusion of key taxa (new to science and/or previously lacking molecular data), additional sequence data (SSU, LSU, EF2, rbcL, COI‐5P), and phylogenetic analyses removing the most variable sites (site stripping) have provided resolution for the first time at these deep nodes. The earliest diverging lineage within the subclass was the enigmatic Catenellopsis oligarthra from New Zealand (Catenellopsidaceae), which is here placed in the Catenellopsidales ord. nov. In our analyses, Atractophora hypnoides was not allied with the other included Bonnemaisoniales, but resolved as sister to the Peyssonneliales, and is here assigned to Atractophoraceae fam. nov. in the Atractophorales ord. nov. Inclusion of Acrothesaurum gemellifilum gen. et sp. nov. from Tasmania has greatly improved our understanding of the Acrosymphytales, to which we assign three families, the Acrosymphytaceae, Acrothesauraceae fam. nov. and Schimmelmanniaceae fam. nov.  相似文献

On NW Atlantic rocky shores, the main basal organisms in intertidal communities are seaweeds (Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus spp. and Chondrus crispus) and filter feeders (barnacles, Semibalanus balanoides, and mussels, Mytilus spp.). Their ecology has been extensively studied in New England (United States), but knowledge gaps exist for northern shores, which are subjected to stronger environmental stress. Therefore, we studied the above organisms on Canadian shores. We quantified the summer abundance of these seaweeds and filter feeders across full vertical (intertidal elevation) and horizontal (wave exposure and winter ice scour) environmental gradients on the Gulf of St. Lawrence and open Atlantic coasts of Nova Scotia. At the regional scale along the open Atlantic coast, seaweeds showed similar abundances in Nova Scotia than values reported for New England. However, both filter feeders were considerably less abundant in Nova Scotia. At the local scale in Nova Scotia, intense winter ice scour (which only occurs on the Gulf of St. Lawrence coast) was associated with a very low abundance of all species except barnacles. Spatial trends in Nova Scotia were similar to patterns known for certain species elsewhere, such as A. nodosum being almost restricted to sheltered habitats, regardless of elevation, and C. crispus being almost restricted to low elevations, regardless of exposure. Other trends were, however, characteristic of Nova Scotia, such as C. crispus being frequent at low elevations in exposed habitats, unlike in New England, where mussels often predominate there because of competitive advantages. In Nova Scotia, mussels were always restricted to cracks and crevices, unlike in New England, where they form extensive intertidal beds on exposed shores. The direct effects of increased environmental stress and indirect effects through altered interspecific interactions might explain the regional differences in local species distribution, which will require experimental validation. Libraries of rumen bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences of Gayals (Bos frontalis) and Swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) were cloned and sequenced in the present work to compare the bacterial diversity with the third published library of Holstein cow. Sequence similarity of 97% was used as the definition of operational taxonomic unit (OTU). The majority of the 470 sequences retrieved fell into the phyla of low G + C subdivision (329 sequences) and Cytophaga–Flexibacter–Bacteroides (CFB, 123 sequences) with the percentages of 70 and 26.2, respectively. The remaining clones belonged to the phyla of Proteobacter, high G + C gram positive bacteria (HGCGPB) and Spirochaetes, accounting for 3.8% totally. Only 73 clones (25 OTUs, 15.5%) could be closely related to cultured representatives. However, a larger fraction was related to uncultured representatives. Holstein cow may have more representatives of cultural bacteria and there were more uncultured clones for Gayals. The percentage of cultural representatives was 24, 13.3 and 9.5 for Holstein cow, Swamp buffaloes and Gayals, respectively. Twenty-three OTUs of the 236 ones appeared in more than one library, five of which were cultural. Selenomonas ruminantium, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens were found in two different libraries, while Succiniclasticum ruminis and Pseudobutyrivibrio ruminis were found in all three libraries. Some of the animal-specific bacteria that had not been described previously in the ruminal ecosystem, e.g. Allisonella histaminiformans for Gayals and Staphylococcus sciuri for Swamp buffaloes were also recovered.  相似文献

Mosquito populations were sampled fortnightly for 2 years, using EVS solid CO2 baited light traps, to monitor seasonal activity of females in the vicinity of new urban development at Casuarina Swamp and Leanyer Swamp, Darwin. The relative abundance of different species was related to seasonal conditions and the influence of urban stormwater on the larval habitats within the two environments. Differences were observed between sites due to the site ecology, and between years and between seasons but, in general, the early dry season was dominated by Culex annulirostris, Anopheles bancroftii and An hilli, while Aedes vigilax and Cx annulirostris were predominant in the late dry season and early wet season at both sites. The late wet season at Leanyer Swamp was dominated by An hilli and An bancroftii, while at Casuarina Swamp, Cx annulirostris was the predominant species. The prevalence of vector species indicates the need for control measures to protect the local communities from mosquitoborne disease.  相似文献

Road escape ramps are structures developed in the USA to enable large mammals that become trapped on the roadside of a wildlife fence to escape the road and avoid vehicle collision. They are now commonly installed in eastern Australia to enable the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) and other fauna to escape through a roadside exclusion fence and return to the forest. We investigated the use of seven of 14 escape ramps over three years on the Oxley Highway at Port Macquarie in New South Wales. The Swamp Wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) was the most frequently detected species, traversing the escape ramps on 502 occasions, followed by bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus and Perameles nasuta) on 148 occasions. Various other species were detected but no Koalas. Swamp Wallabies moved through the escape ramps in the reverse direction (i.e. towards the road) in 53% of detections of that species and bandicoots in 14% of their detections. There was no obvious pattern by these species of proportionately higher use of ramps closer to the end of the exclusion fences. The large number of reverse passages through the escape ramps reveals a poor design of these structures. Trials with taller ramps are required to determine how to minimise reverse passages. Concurrent monitoring of three underpasses detected numerous crossings by large mammals including Swamp Wallabies, and some crossings by Koalas. We believe evidence is needed to demonstrate the necessity for escape ramps along Australian highways.  相似文献

Antibacterial activity of lipid extracts from three species of Caribbean marine algae, Spyridia filamentosa, S. hypnoides and Wrangelia bicuspidata was evaluated monthly for one year. Activities were tested for whole plant extracts and TLC-separable zones. Whole plant extracts demonstrated monthly variability in activity with respect to both habitat and life history phase in addition to periods of similarity. No consistency was seen regarding activity against different microorganisms. TLC analyses of the extracts led to the identification of twenty-seven chromatographically distinct regions (TLC zones) each from both S. filamentosa and S. hypnoides and twenty-five from W. bicuspidata, which demonstrated antimicrobial activity. Between these species, twenty-one active TLC zones appeared to be shared based on their similar chromatographic characteristics. Individual TLC zones also demonstrated variable activity throughout the sampling period with respect to habitat and life history phase as well as periods of similarity. Algal antibiosis in these species is recognized as being highly complex, involving numerous chemical compounds, each of which is highly variable in terms of its presence and/or probable concentration.  相似文献

The Rhytidae (Mollusca; Gastropoda; Pulmonata) are a group of large carnivorous land snails distributed in the southern hemisphere, with a particularly rich fauna in New Zealand. The endemic genus Powelliphanta consists of at least 10 species and many more recognised subspecies, most of which are restricted to the western margin of South Island, New Zealand. Powelliphanta taxa tend to have restricted ecological and spatial ranges among the mountains of this region, with some species being limited to lowland forest and others to habitats at or above the treeline. Among recent discoveries is a population of snails occupying habitat on and around a peak called Mt Augustus, which is situated at the edge of a large and economically important coalfield. Since recognition of the potential biological significance of the Mt Augustus snails in 2004, almost all of their habitat has been destroyed by opencast mining revealing a direct conflict between economic and biodiversity prioritisation. Our analysis of mtDNA sequence data indicate Powelliphanta “Augustus” is a distinctive evolutionary lineage, more closely related to a nearby lowland species Powelliphanta lignaria than the spatial and ecological neighbour Powelliphanta patrickensis. Powelliphanta “Augustus” appears to be a specialised local endemic species. Despite a growing international awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation, the demand for foreign earnings continues to take priority over the protection of our biota.  相似文献

Aim We analysed lake‐sediment pollen records from eight sites in southern New England to address: (1) regional variation in ecological responses to post‐glacial climatic changes, (2) landscape‐scale vegetational heterogeneity at different times in the past, and (3) environmental and ecological controls on spatial patterns of vegetation. Location The eight study sites are located in southern New England in the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The sites span a climatic and vegetational gradient from the lowland areas of eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut to the uplands of north‐central and western Massachusetts. Tsuga canadensis and Fagus grandifolia are abundant in the upland area, while Quercus, Carya and Pinus species have higher abundances in the lowlands. Methods We collected sediment cores from three lakes in eastern and north‐central Massachusetts (Berry East, Blood and Little Royalston Ponds). Pollen records from those sites were compared with previously published pollen data from five other sites. Multivariate data analysis (non‐metric multi‐dimensional scaling) was used to compare the pollen spectra of these sites through time. Results Our analyses revealed a sequence of vegetational responses to climate changes occurring across southern New England during the past 14,000 calibrated radiocarbon years before present (cal yr bp ). Pollen assemblages at all sites were dominated by Picea and Pinus banksiana between 14,000 and 11,500 cal yr bp ; by Pinus strobus from 11,500 to 10,500 cal yr bp ; and by P. strobus and Tsuga between 10,500 and 9500 cal yr bp . At 9500–8000 cal yr bp , however, vegetation composition began to differentiate between lowland and upland sites. Lowland sites had higher percentages of Quercus pollen, whereas Tsuga abundance was higher at the upland sites. This spatial heterogeneity strengthened between 8000 and 5500 cal yr bp , when Fagus became abundant in the uplands and Quercus pollen percentages increased further in the lowland records. The differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation zones remained strong during the mid‐Holocene Tsuga decline (5500–3500 cal yr bp ), but the pattern weakened during the late‐Holocene (3500–300 cal yr bp ) and European‐settlement intervals. Within‐group similarity declined in response to the uneven late‐Holocene expansion of Castanea, while between‐group similarity increased due to homogenization of the regional vegetation by forest clearance and ongoing disturbances. Main conclusions The regional gradient of vegetation composition across southern New England was first established between 9500 and 8000 cal yr bp . The spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation may have arisen at that time in response to the development or strengthening of the regional climatic gradient. Alternatively, the differentiation of upland and lowland vegetation types may have occurred as the climate ameliorated and an increasing number of species arrived in the region, arranging themselves in progressively more complex vegetation patterns across relatively stationary environmental gradients. The emergence of a regional vegetational gradient in southern New England may be a manifestation of the increasing number of species and more finely divided resource gradient.  相似文献

An anthecological study of Tilia in the Great Plains and New England was undertaken for both native and introduced species. The floral bracts are postulated as being at least as important in pollinator attraction as they are in fruit dispersal. A characteristic sweet odor is always present, but becomes stronger at dusk. Flowers are protandrous with anthers opening for the first time late in the afternoon and releasing pollen abundantly for about 24 hr. Initial nectar production coincides with stigma receptivity which begins late in the afternoon, but on the second day a flower is open. Sixty-six species of insects in 29 families were collected. Bees and flies are the most common diurnal visitors and moths are the primary nocturnal visitors. Samples of pollen taken from the insects indicate a relatively high constancy. Experimental tests show that Tilia is not apomictic or self compatible. Anemophily plays a secondary role to entomophily in pollination. Nocturnal pollinators are slighly less effective than diurnal pollinators in effecting fruit set. Although nocturnal pollinators are favored by the syndrome of floral characteristics, it is concluded that Tilia is a generalist in regard to pollination. It is proposed that the lack of clear morphological differences between Tilia species leads to pollinator inconstancy and thus hybridization.  相似文献

Mating tests among strains of Lentinula edodes distributed in Asia-Australasia were conducted. As a result, 26 strains were classified into three groups: 2 strains from Mt. Wilhelm in Papua New Guinea (PN1 group) showed intersterility with 7 strains from Mt. Albert Edward and Mt. Kaisenik in Papua New Guinea (PN2 group) and semicompatibility (clamp formation restricted to contact zone between paired monokaryons) with 17 strains from Asia-Australasia (AA group), whereas the strains of the PN2 group showed compatibility with the AA group. These results suggest that the shiitake populations distributed in Asia-Australasia including Papua New Guinea are in the process of speciation. It is commonly accepted that dasyurids (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) radiated in the late Miocene or early Pliocene in response to a drying trend in Australia's climate as evidenced from the high diversity of dasyurids from modern arid environments compared with Miocene rainforest assemblages. However, mid‐Pleistocene dasyurid assemblages from cave deposits at Mt Etna, Queensland are more diverse than any previously known from rainforest habitats. New taxa will be described elsewhere, but include three new genera as well as new species of Dasyurus, Antechinus and Phascogale. Comparison of dasyurids from Mt Etna sites that are interpreted as rainforest palaeoenvironments with fossil and extant assemblages indicate that they are at least as diverse as those from modern arid environments. Thus Neogene diversification of dasyurids occurred in both arid and rainforest habitats, but only the former survived continuing aridification. Hence, aridification cannot be invoked for the diversification of all dasyurid lineages.  相似文献

Concentrations of dissolved (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) in two billabong wetlands (Murrumbidgil Swamp and Lake Merrimajeel) in inland temperate Australia were positively correlated with leaf fall from river red gums Eucalyptus camaldulensis (DOC and POC in Murrumbidgil Swamp), phytoplankton productivity (DOC in Murrumbidgil Swamp, DOC and POC in Lake Merrimajeel), and with biomass of aquatic macrophytes (DOC in the two wetlands). DOC correlated with water level at both sites. Mean concentrations of DOC (Murrumbidgil Swamp, 36.0 gm-3; Lake Merrinmajeel, 27.5 g m-3) and POC (15.0 g m-3; 15.5 g m-3) were high compared with other water bodies worldwide, although average for wetlands. The relatively high concentrations of DOC and POC in the study wetlands appear to be the result of their high rates of plant production, and input of leaves from river red gums.  相似文献

Studies have shown that the TOM1 family of proteins, including TOM1 and TOM1L1, are actively involved in endosomal trafficking and function in the immune response. However, much less is known about the function of TOM1L2. To understand the biological importance of TOM1L2 and the potential significance of its cellular role, we created and evaluated Tom1l2 gene-trapped mice with reduced Tom1l2 expression. Mice hypomorphic for Tom1l2 exhibited numerous infections and tumors compared to wild-type littermates. Associated with this increased risk for infection and tumor formation, apparently healthy Tom1l2 hypomorphs also had splenomegaly, elevated B- and T-cell counts, and an impaired humoral response, although at a reduced penetrance. Furthermore, cellular localization studies showed that a Tom1l2-GFP fusion protein colocalizes with Golgi compartments, supporting the role of Tom1l2 in cellular trafficking, while molecular modeling and bioinformatic analysis of Tom1l2 illustrated a structural basis for a functional role in trafficking. These results indicate a role for Tom1l2 in the immune response and possibly in tumor suppression.
