Growth rates of branches of colonies of the gorgonian Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae were monitored for 2 years on a reef at San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Images of 261 colonies were made at 6-month intervals and colony and branch growth analyzed. Branch growth rates differed between colonies and between the time intervals in which the measurements were made. Colonies developed a plumelike morphology through a pattern of branch origination and determinate growth in which branch growth rates were greatest at the time the branch originated and branches seldom grew beyond a length of 8 cm. A small number of branches had greater growth rates, did not stop growing, and were sites for the origination of subsequent "generations" of branches. The rate of branch origination decreased with each generation of branching, and branch growth rates were lower on larger colonies, leading to determinate colony growth. Although colonial invertebrates like P. elisabethae grow through the addition of polyps, branches behave as modules with determinate growth. Colony form and size is generated by the iterative addition of branches.  相似文献

By defoliation, girdling, and various combinations of these before the growing season began, the role of foods in old needles, branches, main stems, and roots on shoot growth of 8-yr-old red pine (Pinus resinosa) trees was studied in northern Wisconsin. Defoliation and girdling, alone or in combination, reduced shoot growth but defoliation reduced shoot dry weight more than it reduced shoot elongation. Reductions in shoot growth due to treatment were in the following decreasing order: branch girdling + needle removal > girdling at stem base + needle removal > needle removal > branch girdling > base girdling. The old needles were the major source of food for shoot growth and accounted for four-fifths or more of all shoot growth. The combined reserves in the branches, main stem, and roots accounted for less than 15% of shoot growth. The contribution of reserves from tissues other than old leaves was in the following order: branches > main stem > roots. Defoliation weakened apical dominance relations. In defoliated trees, many secondary axes elongated more than the terminal leader, and secondary axes in lower whorls often grew more than those in upper ones. The data suggest an important role of nutritional factors in correlative growth inhibition.  相似文献

The structure of four new autumn-sown determine genotypes ofwhite lupin, grown with a combination of sowing dates and plantdensities at four locations in France was studied in 1990/91and 1991/92. Plant architecture was characterized in terms ofthe number of first-order branches produced and the distributionof leaves on these branches and how they varied with the numberof mainstem leaves and the position of the branch on the mainstem. The variation in the number of mainstem leaves on determinegenotypes was satisfactorily described by an earlier model developedfor indeterminate genotypes using the intensity of vernalizationrelative to accumulated temperature above 3°C as input. However the architecture of the first-order branches, definedby their number and the total number of leaves per branch ateach subtending position on the mainstem, differed and was influencedby genotype, location and sowing date. In four determinate genotypes, these two characters were positively correlated, and correlatedwith the number of leaves on the mainstem. Increasing densityfrom 10 to 40 plants m-2 reduced the number of branches andtheir total number of leaves. Pruning 15 leaves from the mainstemat the beginning of stem elongation did not influence the developmentof the first-order branches. There appeared to be a functionalrelationship between the number of leaves on the mainstem andthe number of branches established very early in the growingseason. The profiles of number of leaves on the first-order brancheson the mainstem with branch position were modelled using twosub-models, one describing the mean number of leaves on thebranches actually present, and the second describing the frequentlyof occurrence of a branch at a particular position on the mainstem.Of the five model parameters, one, representing the minimalnumber of branches present on the plant, was correlated withthe number of first-order branches. Genotype, location, sowingdate and density affected the shape of the profiles.Copyright1993, 1999 Academic Press While lupin, Lupinus albus L., determine growth, architecture, model, branch  相似文献

Plant allometry that is related to plant architecture and biomass allocation strongly influences a plants ability to grow in shaded forest understory. Some allometric traits can change with plant size. The present study compared crown and trunk allometries, root/shoot biomass allometry, and root architecture among understory saplings (0.25--5m height, except for two trees > 5 < 7 m) of seven deciduous dicotyledonous species in central Japan. Associations of the crown and trunk allometries with several plant morphological attributes were analyzed. Branch morphology (plagiotropyvs orthotropy) and life size were correlated with sapling crown and trunk allometries. Both large leaves and orthotropic branches were associated with a narrow small crown and slender trunk. The root/shoot ratio decreased rapidly with increasing plant height for saplings shorter than about 1.5 m. Less shade-tolerant species tended to have smaller root/shoot ratios for saplings taller than 1.5 m. With an increase in plant height, the branch/trunk biomass ratio decreased for saplings with plagiotropic branches but increased for saplings with orthotropic branches. Four subcanopy species (Acer distylum, Carpinus cordata, Fraxinus lanuginosa and Acanthopanax sciadophylloides) had superficial root systems; a common understory species (Sapium japonica) had a deep tap root system; and a canopy species (Magnolia obovata) and a subcanopy species (Acer tenuifolium) had heart root systems of intermediate depth. The root depth was not related to shade tolerance. Among species of the same height, the difference in fine root length can be 30-fold.  相似文献

Three species of the red algal genus Herposiphonia (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) found in Japan are described, and taxonomic features of the genus are discussed. Herposiphonia crassa Hollenberg is reported from Japan for the first time and is characterized by thick axes (200–350 µm in diameter) and determinate branches (100–200 µm in diameter), relatively short determinate laterals (400–1200 µm in length) with a large number of periaxial cells (15–19 per segment) and three (occasionally two or four) vigorously developed (1.8–2.5 mm in length by 50–75 µm in diameter basally) trichoblasts on each determinate lateral. Herposiphonia elongata Masuda et Kogame is also reported from Japan for the first time and is characterized by the conspicuous thickening growth of cystocarp‐bearing branches and spermatangial branches with an elongated sterile tip. Some newly found features of Herposiphonia fissidentoides (Holmes) Okamura are presented: the rhizoid production from the central portion of parental periaxial cells in addition to the distal end, virtual absence of vegetative trichoblasts, production of procarpial trichoblasts and spermatangial branches on fertile determinate branches on short indeterminate laterals, cystocarps sometimes with a short spur, and extremely large tetrasporangia.  相似文献

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varies in growth habit from aggressive climbing types to bush beans. Growth habit is determined by a combination of factors including determinate versus indeterminate growth, total plant height, degree of branching and internode length. Together these factors make up climbing ability. The objective of this research was to determine the quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling climbing ability in a F5:8 recombinant inbred line population derived from an inter-gene pool cross of an aggressive indeterminate climbing bean with type IV growth habit (G2333) by an indeterminate bush bean of type IIb growth habit (G19839). The population was planted in four randomized complete block design experiments across environments that varied in altitude (from 1,000 to 1,750 masl) and soil fertility (low versus high phosphorus). QTL were identified for plant height, internode length and number of branches per plant on a genetic map covering all common bean linkage groups with a total length of 1,175 cM. In addition a scale was developed to evaluate overall climbing ability and was also used to identify QTL. A total of 7 QTL were found for plant height, 9 for climbing ability, 6 for internode length and 1 for branch number. The largest number and most significant QTL were found on the lower half of linkage group B04 suggesting a major pleiotropic locus for growth habit traits at this location of the genome that is distinct from previously characterized genes which control plant morphology of the crop.  相似文献

The evergreen oak Quercus glauca often dominates secondary broadleaved forests in Western Japan. It is regarded as a mid-successional species, whose diameter and height growth fall between those of early- and late-successional species. Despite the ecological importance of this evergreen oak in the secondary succession of the evergreen broadleaved forest zone in Japan, tree-felling data that allow estimations of tree mass and leaf area from non-destructive measurements are lacking. This paper provides stem growth data, read from tree rings on disks sampled from 13 Q. glauca stems, and their allometric data. The samples were collected in 1994 from the Ginkakuji-san National Forest, Kyoto City, Japan. Allometric data comprised data on stem age, diameter at breast height, diameter at 10% height, tree height, height of the lowest living branch, height of the lowest living leaf in the crown, volume of the main stem, squared stem diameter just below the lowest living branch, total leaf area of the stem, dry weight of the total leaves, dry weight of all branches, dry weight of the main stem, total aboveground dry weight, mean relative photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) above the crown, mean relative PPFD below the crown, crown projection area, and specific leaf area. These data can be helpful for estimating the biomass and leaf area index of a Q. glauca stand by enabling the derivation of allometric relationships between non-destructive measurements (such as stem diameter at breast height, and tree height) and tree mass or leaf area. Diameters (including bark thickness) at ground height and above (at 0.5- or 1-m intervals) for each stem are also provided. Stem growth data were based on tree-ring reads from disks taken from heights of 0.0 and 0.3 m, and at 0.5-m (stem height <7 m) or 1.0-m (stem height ≥7 m) intervals above that. Stem volume growth derived from these tree-ring data can be converted into stem mass growth if combined with an analysis of the allometric data, which may serve as a useful resource for the estimation of carbon fixation by evergreen oaks in relation to global climate change.

Based on an allometric reconstruction, the structure and biomass-allocation patterns of branches and current-year shoots were investigated in branches of various heights in the pioneer tree Rhus trichocarpa, to evaluate how crown development is achieved and limited in association with height. Path analysis was conducted to explore the effects of light availability, basal height and size of individual branches on branch structure and growth. Branch angle was affected by basal height, whereas branch mass was influenced primarily by light availability. This result suggests that branch structure is strongly constrained by basal height, and that trees mediate such constraints under different light environments. Previous-year leaf area and light availability showed positive effects on current-year stem mass. In contrast, branch basal height and mass negatively affected current-year stem mass. Moreover, the length of stems of a given diameter decreased with increasing branch height. Therefore the cost of biomass investment for a unit growth in length is greater for branches of larger size and at upper positions. Vertical growth rate in length decreased with increasing height. Height-dependent changes in stem allometry and angle influenced the reduction in vertical growth rate to a similar degree.  相似文献

  • The wood economics spectrum provides a general framework for interspecific trait–trait coordination across wide environmental gradients. Whether global patterns are mirrored within species constitutes a poorly explored subject. In this study, I first determined whether wood density co‐varies together with elevation, tree growth and height at the within‐species level. Second, I determined the variation of wood density in different stem parts (trunk, branch and twigs).
  • In situ trunk sapwood, trunk heartwood, branch and twig densities, in addition to stem growth rates and tree height were determined in adult trees of Nothofagus pumilio at four elevations in five locations spanning 18° of latitude. Mixed effects models were fitted to test relationships among variables.
  • The variation in wood density reported in this study was narrow (ca. 0.4–0.6 g cm?3) relative to global density variation (ca. 0.3–1.0 g cm?3). There was no significant relationship between stem growth rates and wood density. Furthermore, the elevation gradient did not alter the wood density of any stem part. Trunk sapwood density was negatively related to tree height. Twig density was higher than branch and trunk densities. Trunk heartwood density was always significantly higher than sapwood density.
  • Negative across‐species trends found in the growth–wood density relationship may not emerge as the aggregate of parallel intraspecific patterns. Actually, trees with contrasting growth rates show similar wood density values. Tree height, which is tightly related to elevation, showed a negative relationship with sapwood density.

Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), an effective biological control agent of A. artemisiifolia, was unintentionally introduced into China. To understand the biological control potential of O. communa on A. artemisiifolia, plant height, the number of branches and leaf control index of A. artemisiifolia injured by the beetle were determined. The results showed that plant height and number of branches decreased and leaf control index increased with the increasing initial release density of O. communa adults, when they were released at 90–100-cm plant height stage in 2008 and 60–70-cm stage in 2009. Even when O. communa was released at a low average density of 1.07 adults per plant at early growth stage of A. artemisiifolia in 2009, it could significantly suppress plant height and number of branches and led to a higher leaf control index compared with the herbicide treatment with Roundup. Prior to the fructicative period, the leaf control index of A. artemisiifolia by O. communa was up to 1.0 on the 47th day after the average initial release of 12 beetles per plant in 2008 or on the 85th day after the average release of 1.07 beetles per plant in 2009, which was significantly higher than that in the herbicide treatment. We suggest that the initial release average density of O. communa adults should be ≥1.07 beetles per plant at the early growth stage, or ≥12 beetles per plant at the late growth stage for an effective control of A. artemisiifolia in the field.  相似文献

In plants with rhythmic growth, a branch segment extended in one event is known as growth unit (GU). GU structure, resulting from the resources allocated to stem length, volume and mass, and to leaf area and mass, is relevant for understanding branch functioning in the context of plant development. This study compares GU structure between main branches and short branches positioned at low and high positions on nursery-grown trees of three closely related genetic entities: Nothofagus nervosa, N. obliqua and natural hybrids between these species. GUs of short branches, compared to those of main branches, had lower length, diameter and number of leaves, and higher specific leaf area (SLA), stem density and proportional mass in leaves than in stems. GUs at high position on the trees had a higher proportion of their mass in stem than in leaves and a lower SLA than those at low position. Stem density was higher for N. nervosa and the hybrid trees than for N. obliqua. Most other GU traits did not differ statistically between the considered genetic entities. The three genetic entities exhibited distinct patterns of variation in leaf size with leaf position along main-branch GUs. The individual tree had a significant effect on most variables. GU structure would have a major ontogenetic component and would play a relevant role in the architecture of Nothofagus species and their adaptation to different environmental conditions.  相似文献

Topological developmental models with local (position of internodes) and global (branch lengths) characteristics are proposed to investigate the relationships between fundamental branching patterns of plants such as acrotony, mesotony, and basitony, including the coincidence of different patterns on the same plant. Modification of the basic acrotony during the development by means of, (1) the final expected main axis length results in either basitony or an extension of acrotony over a shortened main axis, (2) the final expected lateral branch length yields either lateral unlimited sympodial branching or the absence of proximal branches. Combinations of these schemes can have variable quantitative expressions on main and lateral axes.As applications, progressive morphological changes introduced by monotonic variations of parameter values give an insight into the relationships between determinate and indeterminate growth, using Lycopersicon as an example. - A theoretical framework is proposed as a possible aid for formalizing plant typology.  相似文献

Plant density and sowing date were shown to affect branchingin spring-sown white lupin (Lupinus albusL.), but the responsevaried among environments. The patterns of primary and secondarybranching in the cv. Lublanc were studied as a function of boththe number of axillary buds and the plant growth rate. Fieldexperiments that used a wide range of sowing dates and plantdensities to alter plant architecture were conducted over 5years, and these were supplemented with data from additionalglasshouse and growth cabinet experiments. The number of axillary buds on the main stem or primary branches, which determined the potential number of branches, increasedlinearly with the number of nodes. In situations where all axillarybuds did not produce branches, it was found that the numberof primary and secondary branches produced was related to theplant growth rate at the beginning of branch elongation. Knowledgeof the number of axillary buds improved the analysis of theinteraction between cultural practices and environmental conditionson plant architecture. The variability of branching potentialamong genotypes was discussed. Lupinus albus; branches; axillary buds; growth; sowing date; plant density  相似文献

The patterns of vegetative growth and reproduction in relation to orders of terminal branches were examined in the evergreen woody plant, Eurya japonica. The branch order number was determined centrifugally. The trunk was given order number 1; branches issuing directly from the trunk were order 2; branches growing on order 2 branches were order 3, and so on. The results of this study show the differential patterns of vegetative growth and reproduction in relation to the branch orders. Lower-order shoots of terminal branches grew more, but produced few flowers. On the other hand, for the higher-order terminal branches, shoot growth was very limited but flowering was more intense. The results show that a tree can be interpreted not as a mere population of equivalent modules but as a spatially structured population. Thus, it is essential to consider the position of modules within the branch system when patterns of vegetative growth and reproduction are examined. It is hypothesized that the difference in the opportunity cost in relation to the branch orders is the main cause of the spatial structure for patterns of vegetative growth and reproduction. Furthermore, for same-order terminal branches, current-year shoot elongation was independent of flowering intensity. These results suggest that this species only invests resources in reproduction that are surplus to its requirements for the functions associated with survival, such as growth and/or storage. • Some parasitic plants are capable of vegetative propagation, which allows them access to new hosts and improves nutrient availability. We aimed to determine what factors positively influence this propagation in the xylem‐tapping Struthanthus flexicaulis, focusing on the use of directed foraging as a means of optimising access to resources.
  • The study site was a rupicolous plant community in southeast Brazil. We evaluated how the success of branch propagation (by contagion) of the mistletoe is influenced by the crown height and density of its main host, the legume Mimosa calodendron. Oriented foraging was tested through comparing the response of mistletoe branches toward a potential host (resources) or a plastic net (no resources).
  • Successful contagion was related to high density and the departure height of a branch from a host crown. In a high‐density area, 89% of branches reached a new host versus 21% in a low‐density area. Formation of an appressorium on either the plastic nets or hosts elicited branch growth reorientation towards it, as well as development of new branches. These responses were significantly stronger towards hosts than nets, and attributed to effective xylem tapping.
  • The foraging strategy of S. flexicaulis benefits from branch response (growth and reorientation) to the development of appressoria and their resulting haustoria. The growth of appressoria on non‐resource substrates and the ensuing response optimises the mistletoe spread by allowing these substrates to act as physical support for spreading branches and to infect a host that was previously out of reach.

Lack of annual growth ring production at the base of branches in the lower portion of the crown is a commonly observed phenomenon. In this study, branches with missing rings were found on 47 of 49 Abies lasiocarpa trees sampled. The number of missing rings on the lowest live branch in the crown averaged 12, and ranged as high as 28. The lower one-third of the live crown tended to consist of branches without rings; these branches contained an average of 30% of the total crown leaf area. The ratio of foliage weight to total branch weight, in combination with position of the branch in the canopy, was an effective discriminator of non-ring producing branches. This suggests that both structural and environmental factors influence the cessation of ring production. The potential ecological implications of branches that fail to produce rings are discussed.  相似文献

Surface area of wood and bark is an important dimension of forests, with implications for respiration rate, energy exchange, and water and mineral budgets. Surface area of stem wood and bark can be estimated effectively from linear regressions on conic surface (one-half basal circumference times tree height) or from regressions of the logarithm of area on the logarithm of diameter at breast height. Branch surface can be estimated from a formula using branch basal diameter, length, and number of current twigs, and from logarithmic regressions of branch bark surface on basal diameter of branches and breast-height diameter of trees. In temperate deciduous forests several square meters of plant surface occur above each square meter of ground surface; these plant surfaces include 0.3–0.6 m2 of stem bark, 1.2–2.2 m2 of branch bark, and 3.0–6.0 m2 of leaf blades. Branch bark surface increases more rapidly than leaf surface with increasing size of branches and trees. Growth and aging of trees, and maturation of forests, imply increasing ratios of bark (and wood) surface to the photosynthetic leaf surface which supports its growth and respiration.  相似文献

Tree height (H) of Kandelia obovata trees decreased sharply from 5 m at the forest interior behind the terrestrial forest to 1.5 m at the forest edge near the river bank according to an increase in the yearly waterlogged period along a belt transect. The decreasing tree stature was attributed to a decrease in the asymptote of H in the D 0.1 (stem diameter at H/10)-H relationship toward the edge. The K. obovata trees were well classified into interior and edge types using a discriminant function based on the habitat-specific D 0.1H relationships. Allometric equations, as a function of D 0.12 H, differed significantly between the interior and edge types in the estimation of the phytomasses of stems and leaves, and the leaf area per tree. On the other hand, common allometric equations were successfully established in the estimation of respective phytomasses of aboveground parts and branches. Biomass and leaf area index decreased toward the forest edge. The biomass allocation to stems decreased toward the edge, whereas those to branches and leaves increased. A dramatic change in stem diameter increment resulted in differences in the D 0.1H relationship along the tree height gradient. Relative growth rate of biomass and light-saturated net photosynthesis, which paralleled net assimilation rate from the interior to the edge, showed their maximum peaks in the middle of the belt transect. This indicates that there exists an optimal environmental condition for growth of K. obovata trees. Leaf nitrogen content tended to increase to the edge with increasing waterlogged period.  相似文献

An experimental study was undertaken to assess the extent to which better-situated branches correlatively inhibit other branches on the same plant which are growing in relatively inferior conditions. The experiments were carried out on naturally-grown Onobrychis squarrosa L. (Papilionaceae), a dominant annual plant of the Mediterranean region of Israel. Treatments were carried out (i) on young plants that only had a seminal shoot, and (ii) on plants after lateral branches had started growing. Differential shade conditions were achieved by the repeated removal of neighbours on one side of the plants. The plants were either left intact or damaged by removing different parts of their branch system. In intact plants, growth responses to the differential light conditions which were expressed by the number of branches, leaves and fruits showed some evidence for support of the shaded branches by the exposed branches on the same plant. In contrast, heterogeneous treatments of both shade and branch damaging led to development that reflected marked correlative inhibition of the shaded parts of the plant. The results show that a latent potential for correlative inhibition between branches exists throughout plant development and that in Onobrychis it can be readily realised when plants are damaged. This could depend on known traits of auxin acting as a correlative signal of growing branches. The observed responses of Onobrychis can be understood as an adaptive strategy which reflects the low reliability of environmental signals and the high cost of changing the course of development, especially in short-lived annual plants.  相似文献
