In alpine ecosystems, microscale variation in snowmelt timing often causes different flowering phenology of the same plant species and seasonal changes in pollinator activity. We compared the variations in insect visitation, pollen dispersal, mating patterns, and sexual reproduction of Rhododendron aureum early and late in the flowering season using five microsatellites. Insects visiting the flowers were rare early in the flowering season (mid-June), when major pollinators were bumblebee queens and flies. In contrast, frequent visitations by bumblebee workers were observed late in the season (late July). Two-generation analysis of pollen pool structure demonstrated that quality of pollen-mediated gene flow was more diverse late in the season in parallel with the high pollinator activity. The effective number of pollen donors per fruit (N(ep)) increased late in the season (N(ep) = 2.2-2.7 early, 3.4-4.4 late). However, both the outcrossing rate (t(m)) and seed-set ratio per fruit were smaller late in the season (t(m) = 0.89 and 0.71, seed-set ratio = 0.52 and 0.18, early and late in the season, respectively). In addition, biparental inbreeding occurred only late in the season. We conclude that R. aureum shows contrasting patterns of pollen movement and seed production between early and late season: in early season, seed production can be high but genetically less diverse and, during late season, be reduced, possibly due to higher inbreeding and inbreeding depression, but have greater genetic diversity. Thus, more pollinator activity does not always mean more pollen movement.  相似文献

Rhododendron aureum Georgi (Ericaceae) is a perennial alpine shrub endemic to Changbai Mountain in China. We used ISSR and RAPD markers to describe the diversity and genetic structure within and among four natural populations located at different altitudes. DNA from 66 individuals was amplified with ten ISSR markers and seven RAPD markers. High genetic diversity was observed by these two techniques at the species level. The genetic diversity of populations increased with altitudinal gradients from low to high. The coefficient of gene differentiation (GST 0.3652 in ISSR and 0.2511 in RAPD) and AMOVA analysis revealed that most genetic diversity was distributed within populations (61.96% in ISSR and 70.23% in RAPD). The estimate of gene flow based on GST was 0.8690 in ISSR and 1.4910 in RAPD. The UPGMA clustering results using ISSR and RAPD showed that all individuals from the same altitude were gathered together, and the two populations (TYD2a and YHLa) from middle altitudes always clustered together. Compared with populations from different altitudes, similar genetic diversity and low genetic differentiation were obtained from populations at the same altitudes, as revealed by ISSR markers. In addition to the reproductive strategy of R. aureum, these data highlight that local environmental conditions may play an important role in shaping the diversity and genetic structure of this species.  相似文献

Fragmentation exposes plants to extreme environmental conditions with implications for species phenology and reproduction. We investigated whether isolation and edge effects influence size, flowering time, fruit set, and seedling establishment of Anadenanthera peregrina var. falcata. We compared trees in the interior (n?=?85), and on the edge (n?=?74) of a cerrado savanna fragment as well as in a pasture (n?=?26) with respect to size, flowering phenology, flower and fruit production, fruit and seed set, predispersal seed predation, and seedling establishment. Trees in the pasture were larger and produced a higher number of flowers and fruits than trees on the edge and interior, yet seed set did not differ across environments. The plant size structure explained the flower and fruit production, and the self-compatibility breeding system caused a similar seed set regardless of the environment. First flowering was later and fruit set higher in the interior. We argue that time of first flower influenced the fruit set of Anadenathera. Edge and isolated trees started to flower earlier as a response to microclimatic conditions—mainly temperature—reducing the fruit set. Predispersal seed predation was lower among pasture trees. Conversely, we found seedlings only on the edge and in the interior of cerrado, suggesting that the pasture was of poor quality habitat for Anadenanthera recruitment. Isolation affected the plant size structure and reproduction of Anadenanthera trees. Studies comparing plant phenology under contrasting environmental conditions may offer clues on how global change may affect plant reproduction in the tropics.  相似文献

Ontogenetic trends in the wood structure of Nepalese Rhododendron were studied in 15 specimens of two tree and four subtree species. Average growth ring width was constant from pith to bark in spite of occurrences of extremely narrow, false, or discontinuous rings. Vessel density, vessel area, vessel element length, and multiseriate ray height generally had an initial increase or decrease to 1.5 cm radius and near plateau or slight decrease or increase outward. Multiseriate ray density and area percentage were variable between specimens without a clear pattern. Ontogenetic trends from pith to fully mature wood in trees plus subtrees were inferred by treating the measurements in the present study with those of mature individuals in a previous study. Comparison of trends in trees plus subtrees and those in shrubs lead to ecological or systematic groupings. Vessel features showed that alpine shrub species have distinctly small, numerous vessels composed of short vessel elements. Multiseriate ray features indicated a systematic difference between the trees plus subtrees of subgenus Hymenanthes and the shrubs of subgenus Rhododendron. Vessel features of alpine shrubs may be an adaptation against frequent freeze-thaw cycles or the result of growth stress imposed by the severe alpine environment.  相似文献

I investigated the effects of display size and flowering phenology on fruit set in Aucuba japonica, an understory dioecious shrub pollinated by opportunistic insects. Natural variations in display size, flowering phenology, and fruit set were monitored in 1997. A hand-pollination experiment was also conducted to check whether pollen limitation was a factor in fruit set in the field. Increases in floral display size did not affect fruit set; the proportion of flowers that set fruit was almost constant irrespective of the total number of flowers per inflorescence, the total number of inflorescences per plant, and the total number of flowers per plant. The hand-pollination experiment showed that fruit set was not pollen limited despite the low mating probability that resulted from the combination of dioecism and the species' dependence on opportunistic pollinators. This was due, in part, to the fact that female flowers did not have a predetermined period of receptivity, but instead remained receptive until they received pollen. In contrast, flowering phenology did affect fruit set. Fruit set was most abundant when male and female flowering was most abundant. This suggests there was some degree of pollen limitation during the part of the flowering season when male flowers were scarce.  相似文献

Hybridization has been repeatedly put forward to explain the invasiveness of Rhododendron ponticum L. in the British Isles. The present study investigates the pattern of ecotypic differentiation and hybridization among native North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum, native R. ponticum from Georgia and Spain, and invasive R. ponticum from Ireland and aims to assess the contribution of hybridization for Rhododendron invasion in the British Isles. Six populations per taxon were analyzed with AFLP markers for genetic dissimilarity, subjected to germination and growth experiments, and tested for frost hardiness. We assessed variation in morphological and ecological characteristics to identify traits displaying evidence of hybridization, thus, promoting invasiveness. Molecular marker analyses revealed a clear distinction between North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum on the one hand, and all R. ponticum populations on the other hand, displaying a complete intermixture of native Spanish and invasive Irish populations. Multivariate analyses of traits revealed leaf length-width ratio, relative growth rates (RGRs) in leaf length, root biomass, and shoot-root ratio to significantly discriminate between the different taxa and unequivocally assigned invasive Irish R. ponticum to the Spanish phenotypes. While the Irish R. ponticum had similar growth traits as conspecific native R. ponticum provenances, germination and biomass allocation were more similar to North American R. catawbiense and R. maximum. Hybridization did not contribute to explaining invasiveness of R. ponticum in Ireland. The similarity in germination and biomass allocation of invasive Irish R. ponticum and North American species has evolved independently and can more probably be attributed to an independent shift within the Ponticum cluster in Ireland.  相似文献

To further understand natural variation and local adaptation in the evolution of plant defense, we analyzed polymorphism data of nucleotide-binding site (NBS) sequences of Rhododendron at both the species and population levels. Multiple duplication events were found in NBS sequence evolution in Rhododendron genomes, which resulted in six clades: A–F. Our results of several NBS clade pair comparisons showed significant evolutionary rate changes based on differences in substitution rates between NBS-encoding protein clades (type I functional divergence). Pairwise comparisons of NBS clades further revealed that many amino acids displayed radical biochemical property changes causing a shift in amino acid preferences between NBS-encoding protein clades (type II functional divergence). Such divergent evolution of NBSs is likely a consequence of positive selection related to differentiation of recognition signals in response to different pathogens. Primers specific to clades B and C, which differed in the number of radical amino acid changes causing type II functional divergence and levels of nucleotide diversities, were further used to amplify population clades B and C NBS sequences of Rhododendron formosanum populations. Higher levels of net nucleotide divergences (measured by D a) between R. formosanum populations were found based on NBS sequences of population clade B compared to population clade C, suggesting local adaptation of population clade B NBS sequences. Local adaptation can be further inferred for R. formosanum population clade B NBS sequences because of significant Φ ST based on variation in nonsynonymous substitutions. Furthermore, local adaptation was also suggested by no significant correlation of population pairwise F ST between population clades B and C in R. formosanum.  相似文献

Menziesia goyozanensis, a Japanese kindof fool's huckleberry, is a shrub speciesendemic only to Mt. Goyo in northern Japan. This species is listed as `criticallyendangered' in the Red Data Book of wild plantsin Japan, and only a single population has yetbeen discovered. The allozyme diversity andRAPD variation of Menziesia pentandrawere eight- and threefold greater than those ofM. goyozanensis, respectively, althoughwe examined only five populations representinga part of the distribution of M.pentandra. Because the environment surroundingthe population of M. goyoznaensis seemsto be stable at present, it is not necessary toplan an urgent ecological conservation practicefor the species. However, considering that thehabitat of M. goyozanensis is very smalland large vegetative disturbances occasionallyoccur in cool temperate forests, in which thespecies dwells, ex situ conservation isessential.  相似文献

PALSER, B. F., PHILIPSON, W. R. & PHILIPSON, M. N., 1989. Development of ovule, megagametophyte and early endosperm in Rhododendron L. (Ericaceae). Complete development of ovule, megagametophyte and early endosperm is compared for 15 species (almost complete for four additional species) representing all subgenera and most sections of Rhododendron. In all the ovule is anatropous, unitegmic, tenuinucellate with the lateral and micropylar nucellus disintegrating completely. The integument has a tanniniferous epidermis, starch around egg apparatus and micropyle, an endothelium and hypostase. Differences occur in time of closure of the micropyle and its final length, total proportion of ovule occupied by gametophyte and by formation of ovule tails only in section Vireya. Megagametophyte development follows the Polygonum pattern in all species. A single archesporial cell becomes the megaspore mother cell directly, and the chalazal spore of a linear tetrad functions. Between the eight-nucleate stage and maturity the micropylar end of the gametophyte elongates into the micropyle. Starch is characteristically present in the mature central cell. The pollen tube penetrates porogamously and double fertilization is rapid. Endosperm development starts promptly and is cellular, first forming a linear row of four cells. The zygote elongates slightly but does not divide during the stages followed. Differences may occur in time of enlargement, orientation of some mitoses, some cellular characteristics, amount of starch present and final size of megagametophyte. Rare abnormalities occur.  相似文献

PALSER, B. F., PHILIPSON, W. R. & PHILIPSON, M. N., 1991. Characteristics of ovary, ovule and mature megagametophyte in Rhododendron L. (Ericaceae) and their taxonomic significance. The ovary, ovule and megagametophyte at the time the latter is mature are described for 177 species representing all subgenera, sections and most subsections recognized in Rhododendron. All three, but particularly the ovary, vary considerably. The ovary is compared among species as to size; shape of apex–tapered vs. depressed; relative dimensions; indumentum–five basic hair types; wall structure including crystal distribution and frequency, stomata, cuticular ornamentation; locule number, shape and size relative to radius; wall thickness relative to radius; placenta size, shape, depth of cleft, level of cleft junction, presence or not of a decurrent placental stalk ridge; number of ovules, their arrangement and orientation on placenta; and presence and distribution of internal stomata and hairs. The nectary which girdles the base of the ovary also varies in size, shape, indumentum, stomata and some internal features. The ovule is anatropous, unitegmic and tenuinucellate with the lateral and micropylar nucellus disappearing completely and the megagametophyte elongating into the micropyle in all species. Also common to almost all are an endothelium, hypostase, differentiated epidermis–most often tanniniferous, and starch in integument around egg apparatus and micropyle. There are differences in size, shape, proportion occupied by gametophyte and micropyle, thickness of integument, degree of differentiation of some features, amount and area of starch and occurrence of chalazal and micropylar tails or of incipient micropylar and/or chalazal appendages. The megagametophyte, which develops according to the Polygonum pattern, has two distinct portions, the chalazal bounded by the endothelium with small antipodal cells at its end and the usually broader micropylar part within the micropyle containing a rather large egg apparatus with distinctive synergids; starch is present in the central cell and the polar nuclei are most often fused. Differences occur in proportions of the parts to one another, amount of starch, etc. Sixty-three characters were entered onto a computer, clustered by two different techniques and dendrograms constructed. Personal analysis and both dendrograms show section Vireya to be characterized by a syndrome of distinctive features and clearly separated from the rest of the genus. Subgenus Hymenanthes also has its particular syndrome but is somewhat less distinct from the remainder of the genus. Even less distinct but still grouped together are species of section Choniasirum and of section Sciadorhodion. Many species of section Rhododendron and of subgenus Tsutsusi tend to cluster together but section Rhododendron and most sections of the azalea complex are more generalized and moderate in the ovary, ovule and megagametophyte characters and do not separate sharply from one another.  相似文献

Simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were developed from expressed sequence tags (ESTs) for Rhododendron section Brachycalyx in order to elucidate its evolutionary processes and reproductive ecology. Nineteen polymorphic EST‐SSR markers were developed from EST libraries of R. amagianum and R. hyugaense. Polymorphisms for these markers were assessed using four species of section Brachycalyx. The number of alleles ranged from 1 to 14, and the observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 0.931 and 0.000 to 0.904, respectively. The EST‐SSR markers developed in this study will be useful for elucidating population genetic structure and breeding systems in section Brachycalyx.  相似文献

Cryptochromes are blue light photoreceptors found in plants, bacteria, and animals. In Arabidopsis, cryptochrome 2 (cry2) is involved primarily in the control of flowering time and in photomorphogenesis under low-fluence light. No data on the function of cry2 are available in plants, apart from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Expression of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) CRY2 gene was altered through a combination of transgenic overexpression and virus-induced gene silencing. Tomato CRY2 overexpressors show phenotypes similar to but distinct from their Arabidopsis counterparts (hypocotyl and internode shortening under both low- and high-fluence blue light), but also several novel ones, including a high-pigment phenotype, resulting in overproduction of anthocyanins and chlorophyll in leaves and of flavonoids and lycopene in fruits. The accumulation of lycopene in fruits is accompanied by the decreased expression of lycopene beta-cyclase genes. CRY2 overexpression causes an unexpected delay in flowering, observed under both short- and long-day conditions, and an increased outgrowth of axillary branches. Virus-induced gene silencing of CRY2 results in a reversion of leaf anthocyanin accumulation, of internode shortening, and of late flowering in CRY2-overexpressing plants, whereas in wild-type plants it causes a minor internode elongation.  相似文献

We observed substantial variation in the time of flowering among 13 populations of Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicaceae) from an extensive latitudinal range when grown under uniform experimental conditions. The later the onset of flowering, the greater was potential reproduction. Later flowering plants also had greater plasticity in a host of morphological and physiological traits measured in nutrient-rich vs. nutrient-poor test environments. This relationship between flowering time and overall plasticity was only apparent for traits measured at the time of seed production, not at the time of flowering or earlier. At the time of seed production in this short-lived annual, the regression of a multivariate measure of overall plasticity on the time of flowering was linear and highly significant (r2 = 0.90, P < 0.0001). These correlations among time of flowering, reproductive fitness, and plasticity support the idea that selection for late-flowering genotypes would select concomitantly for greater plasticity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The mode of reproduction (sexual vs. asexual) is likely to have important effects on genetic variation and its spatial distribution within plant populations. An investigation was undertaken of fine-scale clonal structure and diversity within patches of Ilex leucoclada (a clone-forming dioecious shrub). METHODS: Six patches were selected in a 1-ha plot previously established in an old-growth beech forest. Two of the selected patches were composed predominantly of stems with male flowers (male patch), and two contained stems with predominantly female flowers (female patch). The remaining two patches contained stems with male flowers and stems with female flowers in more or less equal proportions (mixed patch). Different genets were distinguished using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. KEY RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-six genets with different RAPD phenotypes were identified among 1928 stems from the six patches. Among the six patches, the male patches had the lowest clonal diversity, and the mixed patches had the highest. Distribution maps of the genets showed that they extended downhill, reflecting natural layering that occurred when stems were pressed to the ground by heavy snow. In every patch, there were a few large genets with many stems and many small genets with a few stems. CONCLUSION: The differences in clonal diversity among patches may be due to differences in seedling recruitment frequencies. The skewed distribution of genet size (defined as the number of stems per genet) within patches may be due to differences in the timing of germination, or age (with early-establishing genets having clear advantages for acquiring resources) and/or intraspecific competition.  相似文献

Association studies utilize the action of recombination over numerous generations to identify loci that underlie quantitative traits. We use a candidate‐gene association approach, segregation analyses and analyses of local linkage disequilibrium (LD) to evaluate the potentially causal effects of molecular variation at PIF4 (PHYTOCROME INTERACTING FACTOR 4) on ecologically important traits in Arabidopsis thaliana. A preliminary analysis of sequence diversity in 14 natural genotypes revealed one intermediate‐frequency replacement polymorphism at PIF4. A sample of 161 natural accessions was genotyped at PIF4 and screened for average length of early internodes, inflorescence length, days to flowering and flowering interval (days between bolting and flowering) under high‐ and low‐density environments to test for genotype‐phenotype associations. PIF4 was associated with early internode lengths, while the PIF4× treatment interaction was associated with flowering interval in the panel of 161 accessions. Further, in a set of recombinant inbred lines that segregate for the PIF4 polymorphism, nucleotide substitutions at PIF4 co‐segregated with early internode lengths, days to flowering and fruit set, suggesting that cryptic population structure in the association‐mapping panel and attendant LD with a physically distant locus do not account for the observed association. Finally, in a panel of pseudochromosomes from 20 re‐sequenced genotypes, LD appeared to decay rapidly in the immediate vicinity of PIF4, suggesting that flanking loci contribute little to the observed association. In sum, the results suggest that PIF4 causally affects early internode lengths on the primary inflorescence, potentially via effects on reproductive timing and that these traits in turn affect fitness.  相似文献

Six native Rhododendron species grow in thedegraded, fire-prone landscape of Hong Kong: R. simsii andR. farrerae are common and widespread, R.moulmainense is relatively restricted, and R.championiae, R. hongkongense, and R.simiarum are rare. For all species except the rare R.simiarum, there was direct or indirect evidence of regrowth afterfire, but only the two smallest and commonest species grow in sites which arefrequently burned. Both flowered within 18 months of a fire. Most populationsofall species, except R. simiarum, had a deficiency ofindividuals in the smaller basal circumference classes. Seedlings were foundonly in three out of four plots of R. simiarum, and one ofR. farrerae. A few seedlings of the other rare specieswereseen in open, litter-free microsites outside the study plots, but no seedlingsof the most common species, R. simsii, were seen anywhere. In logistic regression models, one or more measures of plant size weresignificant positive predictors of flowering at least once in the three yearstudy period for all species, while percentage cover by surrounding vegetationhad a significant negative impact on all except R. simsiiand R. farrerae, for which no populations arestrongly-shaded. Although the absence of current recruitment is not necessarilya cause for concern in long-lived species that can resprout after fire, werecommend that active vegetation management should be tried to enhance thesurvival and reproduction of R. moulmainense, R.championiae and R. hongkongense, and that newpopulations of these species and R. simiarum should becreated.  相似文献

Flowering time is a well-studied subject in ecology, evolution and molecular biology. Long-term phenological studies have shown relationships between flowering time and environmental and endogenous factors in many species. In contrast, molecular studies using model plants have revealed a complex regulatory network of flowering. We propose that flowering would be a model trait for the integrated study of ecology, evolution and molecular biology. We introduce briefly the flowering regulatory pathways of Arabidopsis thaliana, followed by molecular techniques such as transgenic manipulation, quantitative real-time PCR and detection of differentially expressed genes that could facilitate the study of ‘nonmodel’ species of ecological interest but with little available genome information. Application of the flowering gene network to wild species will be illustrated by two examples: modeling and prediction of the expression of flowering genes in Arabidopsis halleri, and the latitudinal cline of bud set and cessation in Populus. Finally, we discuss the challenges in integrating knowledge of the regulatory network on flowering into ecologically unique flowering phenomena such as synchronous intermittent mass flowering—the topic of this special issue.  相似文献
