Mc Millan , Calvin . (U. Texas, Austin.) Nature of the plant community. VI. Texas grassland communities under transplanted conditions. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(9): 778–785. Illus. 1961.—Clones of 7 grass taxa, Bouteloua gracilis (H. B. K.) Lag., B. eriopoda (Torr.) Torr., B. curtipendula (Michx.) Torr., Panicum virgatum L., the Andropogon scoparius Michx. complex, the Andropogon gerardi Vitman-hallii Hack. complex, and Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash, were transplanted from throughout their distribution in Texas and studied in an experimental garden at Austin. Restricted to western Texas and Panhandle areas, Bouteloua gracilis and B. eriopoda contained similar early-flowering clones throughout their distribution. Less restricted to western sites, B. curtipendula contained later-flowering types from eastern and central areas. In the 4 remaining, widespread taxa, early-flowering potential characterized clones from western sites. These 4 widespread taxa contain the latest-flowering clones from the coast of southern Texas. Clones of Stipa leucotricha Trin. and Rupr. from a broad area in Texas lacked a flowering gradient. Grassland communities of western Texas and the Panhandle, attuned to short growing seasons and low rainfall, were composed of opportunists, the Bouteloua species, and early-flowering variants within the widespread species. Communities of central Texas in habitats of highly unpredictable moisture pattern and a relatively long growing season contained later-flowering variants. Coastal communities attuned to a long growing season contained the latest-flowering variants.  相似文献

Molecular phylogeny reveals the existence of two sibling species in the aphid pest Brachycaudus helichrysi (Hemiptera: Aphididae). —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 266–280. Brachycaudus helichrysi is a worldwide polyphagous aphid pest that seriously damages its primary hosts (Prunus spp.) and the various cultivated plants among its secondary hosts (e.g. sunflower). A recent study of the Brachycaudus genus suggested that this species might encompass two differentiated lineages. We tested this hypothesis, by carrying out a phylogenetic study of this aphid pest based on worldwide sampling and the evaluation of mitochondrial, nuclear and Buchnera aphidicola DNA markers. We show that this species is actually an amalgamation of two sibling taxa, B. helichrysi H1 and B. helichrysi H2, that seem to have overlapping geographic ranges and herbaceous host plant preferences. These two taxa displayed levels of genetic divergence as great as those generally found between sister species in the Brachycaudus genus, suggesting that they actually correspond to two distinct species. Our phylogenetic reconstructions revealed a degree of incongruence between the topologies obtained with the aphid gene data set and with data for a DNA marker from its primary endosymbiont. We identified possible reasons for this observation and discuss the ecological and genotypic data suggesting that B. helichrysi H1 and B. helichrysi H2 have different life cycles.  相似文献

The predaceous larvae of Chrysoperla rufilabris (Burmeister) exhibited some success-motivated searching, particularly when feeding on Heliothis virescens (F.) eggs, but handling time did not decrease with experience. Handling time for H. virescens larvae was more than twice that for eggs. H. virescens larvae were preferred to cotton aphids (Aphis gossypii (F.)) while aphids were preferred to H. virescens eggs. C. rufilabris larvae exhibited a linear functional response to the three prey types tested, over the prey densities tested.USDA, ARS, Retire. Anemopaegma is a monophyletic lineage included in the tribe Bignonieae. The genus is taxonomically problematic, especially in the Anemopaegma arvense species complex, a group whose taxa have been delimited on the basis of leaf external morphology. Here we study the leaf anatomy of all three species and nine varieties currently included in this species complex (A. acutifolium DC., A. arvense (Vell.) Stellf. ex de Souza and A. glaucum Mart. ex DC.) in search for additional characters that may help circumscribe taxa within this group. For comparison, this study also investigated the leaf anatomy of two species that are morphologically similar to representatives of the species complex but currently placed outside it (A. album Mart. ex DC. and A. scabriusculum Mart. ex DC.). All taxa were analyzed using standard anatomical procedures and light microscopy. In addition, leaves of A. acutifolium and Anemopaegma album were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Overall, stomata position, composition of the vascular system of the petiole, midrib, lateral veins and margin constitution represented the most important anatomical features for the recognition of the species and varieties. The study also demonstrated that A. scabriusculum presents leaf anatomical traits that differ from those encountered in species of the Anemopaegma arvense complex, corroborating earlier anatomical and molecular phylogenetic results and indicating that A. scabriusculum is indeed best placed outside the A. arvense species complex. Leaf anatomical data also support the synonymization of some varieties of A. mirandum with A. arvense, as well as varieties of A. glaucum into this species.  相似文献

Illus. 1962.—The results of hybridization studies among 5 of the 6 cespitose species of Zinnia are reported. Analyses of meiosis in the F1 hybrids suggest there are 2 genomes, A and B, in the polyploid taxa. The A genome apparently exists in the diploid state in 2 species, but the B genome is known only from polyploid taxa. Cholomon is the main mountainous block of the Chalkidiki peninsula, which belongs to the central Greek Macedonia. According to the results of a botanical investigation carried out by us in the above region there were found 470 taxa new for its flora, and among them a botanical variety new in science, namely: Ornithogalum nutans L. ssp. boucheanum (Kunth.) The federally endangered Alabama lampmussel (Lampsilis virescens) has been presumed extirpated in the Emory river, TN for almost four decades. In the fall of 2011, three specimens that were morphologically identified as L. virescens (based on external shell morphology) were collected from the Emory river. The significance of such a find led biologists to take a noninvasive tissue sample from each individual for genetic confirmation. Approximately 400 nucleotides of the mtDNA COI gene were sequenced for each individual along with two samples of L. virescens from the Paint Rock river. DNA sequence data was also obtained from Genbank for other Lampsilis sp. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods revealed strong support for a clade consisting of putative Emory river L. virescens and known L. virescens (Paint Rock river origin) that was sister to all other taxa. These results indicated that the individuals collected from the Emory river were indeed L. virescens.  相似文献

Decay of the bacteriochlorophyll excited state was measured in membranes of the purple bacteria Rhodospirillum (R.) rubrum, Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides wild type and Rb. sphaeroides mutant M21 using low intensity picosecond absorption spectroscopy. The excitation and probing pulses were chosen in the far red wing of the long wavelength absorption band, such that predominantly the minor antenna species B896 was excited. The decay of B896 was studied between 77 and 177K under conditions that the traps were active. In all species the B896 excited state decay is almost temperature independent between 100 and 177K, and probably between 100 and 300 K. In this temperature range the decay rates for the various species are very similar and close to 40 ps. Below 100 K this rate remains temperature independent in Rb. sphaeroides w. t. and M21, while in R. rubrum a steep decrease sets in. An analysis of this data with the theory of nuclear tunneling indicates an activation energy for the final transfer step from B896 to the special pair of 70cm-1 for R. rubrum and 30cm-1 or less for Rb. sphaeroides.Abbreviations B880 and B896 the main and long wavelength bacteriochlorophyll's of the LH-1 antenna - RC reaction centre - P special pair in the RC  相似文献

Populations ofHelicoverpa (=Heliothis) zea (Boddie),Heliothis virescens (F.),Manduca sexta (L.) andM. quinquemaculata (Haw.) and their egg and larval parasitoids were sampled in field plots of the: insect-resistant wild tomato,Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum C. H. Mull, accession PI 134417; susceptible commercial tomato cultivar ‘Better Boy’; F1 hybrid; and selected, moderately resistant backcross genotype. Densities ofH. zea andH. virescens eggs and small larvae were higher on resistant genotypes than on susceptible genotypes, but densities of large larvae were similar on all genotypes. Densities ofManduca spp. larvae were too low to permit similar analyses of the effects of plant genotype. Rates of egg parasitism byTrichogramma spp. andTelenomus sphingis (Ashmead) were reduced on insect-resistant genotypes. Rates of parasitism by the larval parasitoidsCampoletis sonorensis (Cameron) andCotesia congregata (Say) were reduced on resistant genotypes. No consistent effects on parasitism rates byCotesia marginiventris (Cresson) were observed and parasitism rates byCardiochiles nigriceps Viereck were unaffected.  相似文献

Gametic chromosome numbers are reported for 22 populations representing 6 taxa in the genus Cenchrus. Numbers of n = 17 were obtained for C. incertus M. A. Curtis, C. longispinus (Hack.) Fern., and for the previously unreported C. mitis Anderss. Populations of C. echinatus L. have the number n = 34, and C. myosuroides H.B.K. n = 35. Irregular meiosis was observed in 2 chromosomal races of C. ciliaris L. having numbers of n = 18 and n = ca. 16, respectively.  相似文献

We used genetic mapping to examine the genetic architecture of differences in host plant use between two species of noctuid moths, Heliothis subflexa, a specialist on Physalis spp., and its close relative, the broad generalist H. virescens. We introgressed H. subflexa chromosomes into the H. virescens background and analyzed 1462 backcross insects. The effects of H. subflexa‐origin chromosomes were small when measured as the percent variation explained in backcross populations (0.2–5%), but were larger when considered in relation to the interspecific difference explained (1.5–165%). Most significant chromosomes had effects on more than one trait, and their effects varied between years, sexes, and genetic backgrounds. Different chromosomes could produce similar phenotypes, suggesting that the same trait might be controlled by different chromosomes in different backcross populations. It appears that many loci of small effect contribute to the use of Physalis by H. subflexa. We hypothesize that behavioral changes may have paved the way for physiological adaptation to Physalis by the generalist ancestor of H. subflexa and H. virescens.  相似文献

1.  The plating efficiency of bacteriophage MX-1 on Myxococcus xanthus strains A and B and M. virescens V2 were compared. Comparison of strains V2 and A suggest that V2 is restrictive and A is not (restriction coefficient was approximately 8). A derivative of M. virescens V2 (strain V2-9) was obtained by repeated exposure of strain V2 to ultraviolet radiation. Strain V2-9 was also unrestrictive. Strain B is apparently unrestrictive too but analysis of phenotypic changes in phage derived from hosts V2, B and A suggested that some of the host-cell processes differ from orthodox restriction and modification.
2.  Cell-free extracts from M. virescens V2 were fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography and two restriction endonucleases, R. MviV2I and R. MviV2II were identified. Nuclease I was found to hydrolyse coliphage DNA at apparently one site only and MX-1 DNA at approximately 10 sites; nuclease II was found to hydrolyse MX-1 DNA at a very large number of sites and its restriction sequence was of comparable frequency with that of R. EcoRII. Modified MX-1 DNA, obtained from phage whose last host was M. virescens V2 was hydrolysed by nuclease II but not by nuclease I. The significance of these findings for restriction in myxococci is discussed.

Bracon thurberiphagae is a parasitoid attacking Anthonomus grandis thurberiae, the thurberia weevil. Although B. thurberiphagae can be reared on the boil weevil, the host is expensive to maintain in the laboratory and varies greatly in quality. Heliothis virescens was tested as an alternate host for rearing B. thurberiphagae because of their more consistent quality and availability, but after three generations the B. thurberiphagae population was severely reduced. After the addition of several amino acids to an adult wasp diet, a 100% improvement in the fecundity of B. thurberiphagae reared on H. virescens was observed and a 1:1 sex ratio was restored. This resulted in the ability to maintain a strong colony on an otherwise unsuitable factitious host. The rearing of B. thurberiphagae on H. virescens did not alter their response to boil weevil cues. These results are important in that they demonstrate that the selection of factitious hosts does not necessarily depend on whether the host is suitable, but that the suitability may be manipulated to some degree.  相似文献

Larvae of Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) often infest soybean crops, Glycine max (L.) (Fabaceae), causing significant yield losses in important soybean-producing regions. The use of soybean varieties resistant to lepidopteran larvae is a major approach in soybean integrated pest management. However, standardization and optimization of bioassays that are used to screen genotypes for insect resistance are essential for high-throughput phenotyping. Methodologies for screening were assessed to determine the most effective method for discriminating levels of antixenosis to H. virescens in soybean plants. Feeding and oviposition preference assays were performed to determine optimal densities of larvae and adults, and optimal plant structures and growth stages for conducting assays. In addition, trichome densities, and fiber and lignin contents were quantified in plant structures of soybean cultivars differing in resistance. Resistance levels of cultivars were best differentiated using nine neonate larvae and two 6-day-old larvae, and by using young leaves of plants at the vegetative stage. This was likely due to the more pronounced differences in lignin and fiber contents in young leaves of vegetative-stage plants. Density of adult pairs, plant structure, and growth stage did not affect ability to distinguish differences in oviposition preference by H. virescens. Higher numbers of eggs were found on the leaves, which were the plant structures that exhibited the lowest trichome densities. The protocol developed in this work will benefit future evaluations of soybean genotypes for antixenosis against H. virescens.  相似文献

Illus. 1961.—Chromosome numbers of 26 Verbena species in North America, separable into 2 series, are reported. The x = 5 series has no diploid representative, few tetraploids, and numerous widespread hexaploid species, while the x = 7 series has many pandemic diploid species and few tetraploid and hexaploid taxa. When compared with the data available for the South American verbenas, these frequencies and distributions were found to be almost opposite. The origin of the 2 groups from an x = 6 prototype followed by ascending and descending aneuploidy is suggested. Migration via tropical land bridges is proposed to explain the occurrence of both groups in the 2 continents. The following taxa are proposed: subgenus Verbenaca (Schauer) Lewis, and subgenus Glandularia (Gmelin) Lewis.  相似文献

Some compounds that are bitter-tasting to humans, both alkaloidal (quinine, quinidine, atropine, caffeine) and non-alkaloidal (denatonium benzoate, sucrose octaacetate, naringin), deterred feeding and oviposition by Heliothis virescens (F.) in laboratory and field cage experiments. Preliminary electrophysiological studies of gustatory sensilla on the ovipositor of H. virescens provided evidence of 3 neurons, one of which is responsive to sucrose. Preliminary indications are that responses of this neuron may be inhibited by quinine and denatonium benzoate.  相似文献

Abstract

The phylogeny of the genus Bryum was studied using cladistic analyses under the maximum parsimony criterion of evolution of anatomical and morphological characters. Three analyses were made with 32 Bryum species plus 20 species from genera supposedly closely related to Bryum, and with Amblyodon dealbatus (Sw. ex Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp., Meesia uliginosa Hedw., and Leptostomum macrocarpum (Hedw.) Bach. Pyl., as outgroups. It is here suggested that under earlier systematic concepts the genus Bryum is paraphyletic. A clade with Bryum billarderi Schwägr., B. capillare Hedw., B. donianum Grev., B. russulum Broth. & Geh., Rhodobryum giganteum (Schwägr.) Paris, and R. keniae (Müll. Hal.) Broth. are circumscribed by spathulate stem leaves that are crowded in the stem apex, suggesting that the rosulate species of Bryum are more closely related to Rhodobryum than to the rest of Bryum. Stem leaf costae without stereids and spores that mature in the winter are synapomorphies for a clade with Anomobryum julaceum (P. Gaertn. et al.) Schimp. and Bryum argenteum (Hedw.). The tropical species B. cellulare Hook. and B. flaccum Wilson ex Mitt. appear in a clade with Plagiobryum zieri (Dicks. ex Hedw.) Lindb. and Synthetodontium pringlei Cardot. In one analysis, B. limbatum Müll. Hal., Epipterygium tozeri (Grev.) Lindb., Leptobryum pyriforme (Hedw.) Wilson, and Roellia roellii (Broth. ex Röll) H.A. Crum came out in a clade with Mniobryum atropurpureum (Wahlenb.) I. Hagen, Mnium hornum Hedw., Pohlia cruda (Hedw.) Lindb., P. longicollis (Hedw.) Lindb., and Pseudopohlia didymodontia (Mitt.) A.L.Andrews. It is here suggested that gametophytic features, such as the orientation and anatomy of the stem leaves and the appearance of vegetative propagules, are important for the internal relationships within the studied ingroup, whereas characters related to the sporophyte, especially those of the peristome, may obscure phylogenetic relationships. Most of the subgenera and the sections of Bryum, as defined by earlier authors, appear to be paraphyletic. However, due to the low stability of most clades it is suggested that analyses including anatomical, morphological, and molecular data are needed.  相似文献

Friedemann K., Wipfler B., Bradler S. and Beutel R.G. 2011 . On the head morphology of Phyllium and the phylogenetic relationships of Phasmatodea (Insecta). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 00 : 1–16. External and internal head structures of Phyllium siccifolium are described in detail. The findings are compared with conditions found in other phasmatodeans and members of other neopteran lineages. The compiled 125 characters were analysed cladistically. A clade Eukinolabia (Phasmatodea + Embioptera) was confirmed. Synapomorphies of these two taxa are the shift of the origin of M. tentorioparaglossalis to the hind margin of the prementum, the presence of M. tentorioscapalis medialis, and antennal muscles that originate exclusively on the anterior tentorial arms. Within Eukinolabia, the position of Timema remains somewhat ambiguous because of missing anatomical data. However, it was confirmed as sister group of Euphasmatodea in a monophyletic Phasmatodea. Apomorphic groundplan features of Euphasmatodea are salivary ducts with separate external openings, apically rounded glossae, the presence of the galealobulus, and the reduction of the antennifer. The monophyly of Neophasmatidae was confirmed. Autapomorphies are the loss of M. frontobuccalis posterior, the anteriorly or dorsally directed maxillary palps, and the reduction of the mandibular incisivi. The analysis of characters of the head yielded three new autapomorphies of Phylliinae, the presence of a protuberance on the attachment site of the dorsal tentorial arms, dorsoventrally flattened maxillary‐ and labial palps, and possibly the narrow and U‐shaped field of trichomes on the apical part of the galea.  相似文献
