Selective grazing of a calanoid copepod Temora longicornis was measured during different stages of a Phaeocystis globosa bloom, in order to reveal (1) if T. longicornis feeds on single cells and/or colonies of P. globosa in the presence of alternative food sources, (2) if copepod food selection changes during the initiation, maintenance, collapse and decay of a P. globosa bloom and (3) if P. globosa dominated food assemblage provides a good diet for copepod egg production. Our results show low but constant feeding on small colonies of P. globosa, irrespective of the type or concentration of alternative food sources. In contrast, feeding on single cells was never significant, and the total contribution of P. globosa to carbon ingestion of T. longicornis was minor. T. longicornis fed most actively on the decaying colonies, whereas during the peak of the bloom copepods selected against P. globosa. Mostly, T. longicornis fed unselectively on different food particles: before the bloom, the major part of the diet consisted of diatoms, whereas during and after the bloom copepod diet was dominated by dinoflagellates and ciliates. Egg production was highest during the decay of the bloom, coinciding with highest proportional ingestion of heterotrophic organisms, but was not seriously reduced even during the peak of the bloom. We conclude that P. globosa blooms should not threaten survival of copepod populations, but the population recruitment may depend on the type (and concentration) of the dominant heterotrophs present during the blooms. Due to relatively unselective grazing, the impact of T. longicornis to the initiation of a Phaeocystis bloom is considered small, although grazing on decaying colonies may contribute to the faster termination of a bloom.  相似文献

The impact of Phaeocystis globosa population decline on the microbial community was studied during a mesocosm experiment, with irradiance regime and inorganic N:P ratios (4, 16, and 44) as controlling factors. Heterotrophic bacterial activity was closely related to enhanced (viral) lysis rates of P. globosa cells and disintegration of the colonies. Up to 85% of the bacterial C demand could be supplied by P. globosa-specific cellular C release. The bacterial populations with high DNA content became dominant (>70% of total). The bacterial community showed a rapid shift in composition to take advantage of the changing conditions during the demise of the P. globosa bloom. Members of the Alphaproteobacteria and the Bacteroidetes group emerged directly upon bloom decay. Multidimensional scaling analysis in conjunction with DGGE fingerprinting implied that clustering was more related to the availability of organic carbon (the collapse of the P. gobosa bloom) than to the nature of the phytoplankton growth-controlling nutrient. Reduced irradiance delayed the development of the P. globosa population and subsequently changes in the bacterial community composition. Disintegration of P. globosa colonies resulted in the formation of transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) and aggregates, more so under P-depletion than under N-deficient conditions. The colonial matrix transformed into big aggregates under P-depleted conditions but remained largely as ghost colonies under N-depleted conditions. In the mesocosm with initial nitrogen and phosphorus supplied in the Redfield ratio, features intermediate to conditions with either N- or P-depletion were observed. It was hypothesized that TEP affected microbial population dynamics directly through bacterial colonization and indirectly through scavenging of predators and viruses.  相似文献

Comparative studies of sympatric species that integrate both phylogeographical and population genetic approaches provide insight into how demographic events and life history traits shape adaptive potential and drive species persistence. Such studies are rare for species‐rich and strongly structured environments, especially those of the southern hemisphere. For two sympatric, perennial shrubs of the south‐west Western Australian semi‐arid zone, Grevillea globosa and Mirbelia sp. Bursarioides, we assessed historical and contemporary genetic diversity and structure, demographic processes and ratios of pollen to seed dispersal. Phylogeographical structure was not detected and haplotype networks were star‐like. Number of haplotypes, nucleotide diversity, haplotype diversity, and allelic diversity were statistically significantly lower for G. globosa than for M. sp. Bursarioides. Levels of haplotype divergence and more contemporary genetic divergence and expected heterozygosity were lower for G. globosa than for M. sp. Bursarioides, but differences were not statistically significant. Both species exhibited signals of isolation by distance and low pollen to seed dispersal ratios (5.26:1 and 6.88:1). Grevillea globosa displayed signals of historical and contemporary demographic expansion. Results imply an important role for aspects of seed ecology that impact population demography, as well as direct dispersal and a significant contribution of seed dispersal to genetic connectivity in a semi‐arid landscape.  相似文献

We investigated if (1) dissolved compounds excreted by Phaeocystis globosa and (2) transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) formed from carbohydrates excreted into the water affect the feeding of nauplii and females of the calanoid copepod Temora longicornis during a P. globosa bloom. Copepod grazing on the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii in the presence of these possible grazing deterrents was measured during three successive weeks of a mesocosm study, simulating the development of a P. globosa bloom. Our results demonstrate no indication for the presence of feeding deterrents in the dissolved phase, but a strong inhibitory effect of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) on the consumption of algae by both nauplii and adult copepods. The inhibitory effect of TEP was connected to the accumulation of DOM during the progress of the bloom. We suggest that a reduction in the grazing pressure of zooplankton may increase the survival of the liberated single cells during disruption of colonies and allow seeding populations to persist. Furthermore, P. globosa reduces the trophic efficiency of the food web not only by withdrawal of its colonies from grazing but also by a relaxation of the grazing pressure on co-occurring phytoplankton and by alteration of the food web structure via TEP production.  相似文献

Summary In Spin Filter flasks interacting populations of algae can be grown in such a way that they are kept separate spatially but remain in close contact chemically. The rotating filter unit of the flasks is a solution to the clogging problem. 浮游动物的摄食信息能增大棕囊藻囊体体积,囊体形成被认为是棕囊藻的诱导性防御机制。利用桡足类火腿伪镖水蚤和异养甲藻海洋尖尾藻释放的摄食信息,研究了诱导性防御对球形棕囊藻和布氏双尾藻的竞争的影响。结果表明,球形棕囊藻接收了火腿伪镖水蚤和海洋尖尾藻释放的摄食信息之后形成更大的囊体。防御启动后的球形棕囊藻比未接收摄食信息的球形棕囊藻更快地形成囊体,且囊体维持的时间更长。对照组和火腿伪镖水蚤摄食信息诱导的球形棕囊藻的生物体积比布氏双尾藻更高,且球形棕囊藻在竞争中占优势;而海洋尖尾藻摄食信息诱导的球形棕囊藻生物体积低于布氏双尾藻,且球形棕囊藻相对布氏双尾藻的竞争力下降。微型浮游动物海洋尖尾藻摄食信息导致球形棕囊藻相对硅藻布氏双尾藻的竞争力的下降,有利于解释硅藻先于棕囊藻发生藻华。  相似文献

为研究北部湾棕囊藻(Phaeocystis)藻华的成因,采用PCR克隆了棕囊藻北部湾株核糖体18S r DNA序列。结果表明,棕囊藻北部湾株具有游动单细胞与群体结构两种形态;其18S r DNA序列和NCBI基因库中球形棕囊藻(Phaeocystis globosa)的同源性为99%~100%,在系统进化树上与不同海域来源的球形棕囊藻聚在一大分支上,且与球形棕囊藻间的遗传距离均小于其他种。首次从分子生物学上确定棕囊藻北部湾株为球形棕囊藻。  相似文献

The rates of development and food intake of the copepod Temora longicornis (Müller) were studied using artificial blooms of Phaeocystis globosa Scherffel under different conditions of nutrient limitation. Mesocosms with 800 l of natural seawater were manipulated by inoculation with cultured P. globosa and by addition of nitrogen and/or phosphorus, to obtain N- or P-limited blooms of P. globosa. During development and ageing of these blooms, water from the mesocosms was used as medium for incubation of nauplii of T. longicornis. Only moderate rates of naupliar development as well as high rates of mortality were observed, irrespective of major differences of nutrient conditions and density of P. globosa. Grazing by the nauplii on P. globosa seemed to be low, suggesting a low food quality of this alga at all physiological conditions studied. The results of this study indicate a low capability of T. longicornis nauplii for control of nuisance algal blooms caused by P. globosa.  相似文献

Characteristics of cadmium (Cd) accumulation and tolerance in Rorippa globosa (Turcz.) Thell., a species with some characteristics of cadmium hyperaccumulation were further investigated and compared with a closely related species, Rorippa islandica. The results showed that there was no phytotoxicity for R. globosa leaves or reduction in biomass when treated with 25 μg Cd g−1, although the concentration of Cd accumulated in the leaves was up to 218.9 μg Cd g−1 dry weight (DW). On the contrary, Cd toxicity was observed in R. islandica leaves by way of determining changes in fresh weight (FW), malondialdehyde (MDA) level and chlorophyll content while treated with 25 μg Cd g−1 DW. R. globosa had stronger self-protection ability than R. islandica to adapt to oxidative stress caused by Cd. Application of Cd significantly increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in leaves, the activity of peroxidase (POD) in roots, and the activity of catalase (CAT) in leaves and roots of R. globosa. By contrast, in R. islandica, the activity of antioxidant enzymes was inhibited or unchanged by various Cd treatments. However, R. globosa leaves had higher activity of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and POD than that of R. islandica. The antioxidative defense systems in R. globosa might play an important role in Cd tolerance. The Cd treatments significantly induced the synthesis of phytochelatins (PCs) in the two species. Leaf PCs and Cd accumulation by R. globosa were much greater than those by R. islandica, but root PCs and Cd accumulation by R. islandica were much greater than those by R. globosa, suggesting that PCs in leaves may be a biomarker of Cd hyperaccumulation, and the synthesis of PCs may be related to an increase in the uptake of Cd ions into the cytoplasm, not the primary mechanism for Cd tolerance.  相似文献

Previous work on the genetic diversity of Phaeocystis used ribosomal DNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analyses to show that there is substantial inter- and intraspecific variation within the genus. First attempts to trace the biogeographical history of strains in Antarctic coastal waters were based on a comparison of ITS sequences. To gain deeper insights into the population structure and bloom dynamics of this microalga it is necessary to quantify the genetic diversity within populations of P. antarctica from different locations (i.e., each of the three major gyres in the Antarctic continental waters) and to calculate the gene flow between them. Here we describe methods to quantify genetic diversity and our preliminary results for P. antarctica in comparison to two other colonial species: P. globosa and P. pouchetii. For this study of genetic diversity, two fingerprinting techniques were used. First, amplified fragment-length polymorphisms (AFLPs) were established as a pre-screening tool to assess clone diversity and to select divergent clones prior to physiological investigations. Second, the more-powerful microsatellite markers were established to assess population structure and biogeography more accurately. Results show differences in the AFLP patterns between isolates of P. antarctica from different regions, and that a wide variety of microsatellite motifs could be obtained from the three Phaeocystis species.  相似文献

Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial infection of the stratum corneum by several yeast species formerly collectively named Malassezia furfur. The genus Malassezia has been recently enlarged with new species. With the exception of M. pachydermatis, the remaining six species have an absolute requirement in vitro for supplementation of long-chain fatty acids in media. These lipophilic yeasts comprise six species: M. furfur, M. globosa, M. obtusa, M. restricta, M. slooffiae and M. sympodialis. The aim of this study was to establish whether there was any association between the various species of Malassezia and pityriasis versicolor lesions. Thus, we studied the isolates from 79 patients with pityriasis versicolor, both from lesions and from apparently healthy skin close to the visible lesions. In pityriasis versicolor lesions, the species most frequently isolated was M. globosa (90%), followed by M. sympodialis (41%). Almost all isolates (99%) belonged to one of these two species. The most frequent pattern was M. globosa as the sole species (58% of cases), although the association with M. sympodialis was also frequent (30%). These results confirmed M. globosa as the main agent of pityriasis versicolor and M. sympodialis as the second agent in importance. Malassezia globosa was found to be a species with high levels of esterase and lipase enzymes of probable importance in their pathogenicity. The surface ornamentation of ascospores ofPreussia globosa was compared in an isolate from paddy soil in Japan and a culture derived from the holotype. The ascospores of two cultures were characterized by the surface ornamentation of a single, semicircular spiral ridge. This new finding strongly suggested that the fungus should be transferred to the genusWesterdykella. Therefore, the morphological and cultural characters of the fungus were re-examined, and the new combinationWesterdykella globosa is herein proposed.  相似文献

It has been proposed that organic acid and nonprotein thiol are involved in the hyperaccumulation of metals. In this study, Cd accumulation, organic acid, and nonprotein thiol production and their relationships in the leaves of Cd-hyperaccumulator Rorippa globosa were examined and compared with a closely related species, Rorippa islandica. The results showed that there was no reduction in biomass of R. globosa when treated with 25 μg Cd g−1 (T2), despite Cd accumulation in the leaves was up to 158.2 μg g−1 DW. On the other hand, the growth of Cd-treated R. islandica was obviously inhibited as it accumulated more than 100 μg g−1 DW in the leaves. Therefore, R. islandica behaved as a Cd-accumulating plant. The Cd treatments could significantly induce the synthesis of acetic acid in both species, suggesting that acetic acid, as the most abundant organic acid, might be related to the Cd accumulation. Significant positive correlations between Cd concentrations and both tartaric and malic acid concentrations in the leaves of R. globosa were observed. There was a significant positive correlation between Cd concentrations and acetic acid concentrations in the leaves of R. islandica. This trend of tartaric and malic acids in the leaves of R. globosa and acetic acid in the leaves of R. islandica might be related to Cd accumulation. In addition, a quadratic relationship was obviously observed for NP-SH contents and total Cd concentrations in the leaves of R. globosa, indicating that NP-SH was significantly related to Cd accumulation and tolerance.  相似文献

The quantities of ammonia excreted over a period of 24 h by two prosobranch snails Viviparus bengalensis and Pila globosa were measured at 30 day intervals to compare their excretion during the active and dormant phases of their life. The aquatic snail V. bengalensis excreted 0.5-1.0 μmole of ammonia per day and snail throughout the year. The ammonia excretion rate of this snail was 40-50% lower in winter than in the monsoon and summer period. In the amphibious snail Pila globosa excretion of ammonia was limited to only four months of its active life i. e. during July-October. Also the rate of ammonia excretion in P. globosa (0.2-0.3 μmole per day and snail) was very low compared with V. bengalensis.  相似文献

Wolbachia are endosymbiotic bacteria known to manipulate the reproduction of their hosts. These manipulations are expected to have consequences on the population genetics of the host, such as heterozygosity levels, genetic diversity and gene flow. The parasitoid wasp Tetrastichus coeruleus has populations that are infected with parthenogenesis‐inducing Wolbachia and populations that are not infected. We studied the population genetics of T. coeruleus between and within Wolbachia‐infected and uninfected populations, using nuclear microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA. We expected reduced genetic diversity in both DNA types in infected populations. However, migration and gene flow could introduce new DNA variants into populations. We therefore paid special attention to individuals with unexpected (genetic) characteristics. Based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, two genetic clusters were evident: a thelytokous cluster containing all Wolbachia‐infected, parthenogenetic populations and an arrhenotokous cluster containing all uninfected, sexual populations. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA did not exhibit concordant patterns of variation, although there was reduced genetic diversity in infected populations for both DNA types. Within the thelytokous cluster, there was nuclear DNA variation, but no mitochondrial DNA variation. This nuclear DNA variation may be explained by occasional sex between infected females and males, by horizontal transmission of Wolbachia, and/or by novel mutations. Several females from thelytokous populations were uninfected and/or heterozygous for microsatellite loci. These unexpected characteristics may be explained by migration, by inefficient transmission of Wolbachia, by horizontal transmission of Wolbachia, and/or by novel mutations. However, migration has not prevented the build‐up of considerable genetic differentiation between thelytokous and arrhenotokous populations.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) pollution around the world is a serious issue demanding acceptable solutions, one of which is phytoremediation that is both cost-effective and eco-friendly. Removal of Cd from contaminated water using plants with high growth rates and sufficient Cd accumulation abilities could be an appropriate choice. Here, we investigated a potential Cd accumulator, Wolffia, a rootless duckweed with high growth rate. Cd uptake, accumulation, tolerance, and phytofiltration ability by Wolffia globosa were examined. Furthermore, the effects of arsenic (As) on Cd uptake and phytofiltration by W. globosa were also studied. Cd uptake kinetics showed a linear pattern and a hyperbolic pattern without a plateau in lower (0–2 μM) and higher (0–200 μM) Cd concentration ranges, respectively, suggesting rapid Cd uptake by W. globosa. Cd accumulation ability by W. globosa was higher at Cd concentrations < 10 μM than at >10 μM. All the five species of Wolffia exposed to 1 μM Cd for 5 days accumulated > 500 mg Cd kg?1 DW. Ten gram fresh W. globosa could diminish almost all the Cd (2 μM) in a 200 mL solution. This enormous accumulation ability was mostly due to passive adsorption of Cd by the apoplast. Arsenic had no significant effect on Cd uptake and phytofiltration. The fresh fronds also showed a great As extracting ability. The results indicated that Wolffia is a strong Cd accumulator and has great Cd phytoremediation potential. Therefore, this plant can be used in fresh aquatic environments co-contaminated by low-levels of Cd and As.

As ploidy level and mating system can affect genetic diversity and differentiation, we conducted population genetic analyses of two closely related mosses, Scorpidium cossonii (Schimp.) Hedenäs, and S. revolvens (Sw. ex Anonymo) Rubers which differ in ploidy level and sexual system. We collected 315 specimens in total from five populations of S. cossonii and four populations of S. revolvens in the Swiss Alps. Ploidy level, genetic diversity within populations, and genetic differentiation between populations and species were estimated using nine microsatellite markers. In each S. cossonii sample, each locus bore only one allele, while in S. revolvens, seven out of the nine loci were fixed or nearly fixed for two alleles per locus per individual. These findings are consistent with a gametophytic haploid S. cossonii and allodiploid S. revolvens. The haploid and dioicous S. cossonii was genetically more diverse than the (allo)diploid and monoicous S. revolvens. Differences in genetic diversity between the two species may be explained by different mating systems, different population sizes, and different population histories. Genetic differentiation among populations of S. cossonii was higher than among those of S. revolvens. The low genetic differentiation among populations of the monoicous species was not unexpected, since monoicous species frequently produce sporophytes, long-distance spore dispersal is more likely and leads to low differentiation.  相似文献
