Patterns of growth, and of flower and fruit production, were monitored over two years in a population of the orchid Aspasia principissa Reichb. f. in central Panama. Observations and experimental manipulations were used to determine the relative importance of pollinator and resource limitation on fruit production. Within a season, fruit production was limited by pollinator availability. Fruit set for hand-pollinated flowers was over six times greater than that for naturally pollinated flowers. However, in plants that produced more than one fruit, fruit size declined in subsequent fruits, indicating that resources could limit seed production within a season. Plants producing fruits in 1986, on average, produced smaller shoots and inflorescences in 1987 relative to plants that flowered but produced no fruit in 1986. Thus, plants are likely to be resource limited over their lifetimes. Most individuals of reproductive size (82.5%) did not produce fruit over a three-year period. The reproductive dominance of a few individuals in this population of Aspasia principissa may have important implications for understanding the population structure of the species and the high species diversity of orchids.  相似文献

Summary We experimentally examined factors limiting seed production in two populations of the perennial woodland herb Geranium maculatum in central Illinois, USA. To test the pollinator-limitation hypothesis, we compared the seed production of plants whose flowers were supplementarily pollinated with outcross pollen to that of control plants receiving natural pollination only. To test if fruit production by early flowers suppresses fruit and seed formation by late flowers, a third group of plants was prevented from producing seed from the first 50% of the flowers to open (stigmas were excised at flower opening). Finally, to test if seed maturation and flower initiation are correlated with photosynthetic capacity, we performed a defoliation experiment in which either the stem leaves within the inflorescence, the stem leaves below the inflorescence, or the rosette leaves were removed during late flowering. Plants that reccived supplemental pollination produced 1.5–1.6 times more seeds than control plants. We found no difference between hand-pollinated plants and controls in mortality, flowering frequency or number of flowers produced in the year following the experiment. In both control and hand-pollinated plants, the fruit set and total seed production of early flowers were more than twice as high as those of late flowers. In one of the two populations, plants whose early flowers were prevented from setting seed produced significantly more seeds from their late flowers than did control plants. Seed predation was low and did not differ between early and late flowers. Leaf removal did not affect seed number or size in the year of defoliation, nor did it reduce survival or flower production in the subsequent year. This suggests that the plants were able to compensate for a partial defoliation by using stored resources or by increasing photosynthetic rates in the remaining leaves. Taken together, the results demonstrate that both pollinator activity and resource levels influence patterns of seed production in G. maculatum. While seed production was pollinatorlimited in both populations, a seasonal decline in resource availability was apparently responsible for the low seed production by late flowers.  相似文献

Summary Under conditions where resources are limited, there are often negative correlations between components of maternal yield, or between fruit and flower production. Pollination, in turn, may vary among individuals and influence total maternal expenditure. We examined the impact of variation in pollination thoroughness upon yield components and overall plant growth in wild radish (R. raphanistrum) plants grown in the greenhouse. Plants received different pollination treatments in which 0% to 100% of all flowers produced were hand-pollinated. Fruit set was increased by hand-pollination, but rarely exceeded 30%, even when more than 50% of the flowers were pollinated. Plants receiving more thorough pollination or having greater proportion fruit set produced significantly smaller seeds. Seed number per fruit was not influenced by pollination treatment. Mean values of yield components and interactions between components often varied among plants from different maternal families. Increasing pollination thoroughness also resulted in dramatic decreases in flower production. If male fitness is related to flower number, there may be a tradeoff between maternal fecundity and successful pollen export operating at the whole-plant level in this species.  相似文献

Summary From 1985–1987, patterns of fruit and seed set were studied in a population of mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum), a clonal, self-incompatible herb found in deciduous woods in eastern North America. Mayapple flowers do not produce nectar, but depend on infrequent visits by nectar-seeking queen bumble bees for pollination. In all years female reproductive success in mayapple colonies was influenced by colony size (number of flowers), by the distance to neighbouring colonies and by proximity to lousewort plants (Pedicularis canadensis), a prolific nectar producer heavily visited by bumble bees. In all years fruit and seed set were greater in mayapple colonies <25 m from lousewort flowers than in matched colonies which were >50 m from lousewort. In 1985 and 1987 the frequency of queen bumble bee visits to flowers in colonies close to lousewort was about four times greater than to distant colonies. In 1986 I removed about 80% of lousewort flowers to test whether the enhanced fruit and seed set in mayapples close to lousewort was pollinator mediated. Mayapple colonies close to flowerless lousewort patches did not differ in fruit or seed set from matched colonies >50 m from lousewort. In contrast, mayapples close to flowering lousewort patches had greater fruit and seed set compared with distant colonies. Over all years, a larger proportion of mayapples close to flowering lousewort patches had enhanced fruit and seed set compared with colonies close to louseworts without flowers. Though rarely documented, this type of facilitative interaction between plants that are highly attractive to pollinators (magnet species), and co-flowering species that are rarely visited by pollinators, may be widespread in plant communities.  相似文献

The reproductive success of three co-flowering species ofVaccinium (V. myrtillus, V. vitis-idaea andV. uliginosum) was studied in one heathland of the Upper Ardennes, Belgium, during three years (1988–1990). The purpose was to examine whether pollen limitation, flower position and flowering phenology may influence patterns of fruit set in these three sympatric species. I quantified fruit and seed set following supplementary hand-pollinations and compared this to natural fruit set. On the same plants, I also quantified fruit and seed set in relation to the spatial position of the flowers on the ramet and their temporal sequence of blooming. Hand-pollination had no significant effect on fruit set inV. vitis-idaea andV. uliginosum, but significantly increased seed number per fruit in 1989. InV. myrtillus both fruit and seed set were increased by supplementary pollination, but significantly in only one year. Analyses of position effects revealed that the fruits in the lower positions in the ramet did not mature preferentially and did not contain more seeds inV. uliginosum and inV. vitis-idaea. Flowering phenology also had no significant effect for these species. InV. myrtillus hand-pollinated flowers showed a seasonal decline in seed number, and control (naturally pollinated) flowers showed a seasonal increase in fruit set. Fruit and seed set appear to be pollen-limited rather than resource-limited inV. uliginosum. In the two other species, unfavorable weather (frosts) could be a more important cause of low fruit and seed set.  相似文献

A recent literature review indicates that pollen limitation of female fertility is a common feature of flowering plants. Despite the ecological and evolutionary significance of pollen limitation, most studies have only examined fertility in a single population at one time. Here we investigate pollen limitation of fruit and seed set in five populations of Narcissus assoanus, a self- sterile, insect-pollinated geophyte, over 2–3 years in southern France. In common with many early spring flowering plants, pollinator visitation to N. assoanus is often infrequent. Supplemental hand-pollination of flowers with outcross pollen significantly increased overall fruit and seed set by 11% and 19%, respectively. Four of the five populations experienced some pollen limitation during the study. For a given year, there was significant variation in pollen limitation among populations. Two of the populations were pollen limited in one year but not in other years in which they were studied. Seed:ovule ratios for open- and hand-pollinated flowers averaged 0.29 and 0.33, respectively. While hand pollination significantly increased the seed:ovule ratio, the low value obtained indicates that the majority of ovules in flowers do not mature seeds despite hand pollination. 1. An experimental approach, manually pollinating all the flowers of individual plants, was used to measure the effect of pollen limitation on female fecundity of the hummingbird-pollinated perennial shrub Echeveria gibbiflora in the ecological preserve of Pedregal de San Angel around México City, México. Eleven randomly selected plants were manually over-pollinated in all their flowers and another 11 were left to be freely visited by natural pollinators.
2. Manually pollinated plants produced significantly more fruit and seeds than control plants (1·38 and 1·74 times, respectively). There was no change in average mass of fruits.
3. Considering individual fruit production per plant sampled three times in one season, decreases in fruit mass and average seeds per fruit were observed within the same reproductive season for both treatments. For the manually pollinated plants, from the start to the end of the reproductive season, seed set decreased 55·9%; while in control plants seed set decreased 33·4% in the same period. For both treatments, average fruit mass decreased 26%.
4. Vegetative growth was not significantly different between control and experimental plants but hand-pollinated plants showed a smaller reproduction probability for the following year.
5. It is concluded that female fecundity in E. gibbiflora is limited by pollen early in the reproductive season and by resources in the middle and the end of the season.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Andromonoecy, the presence of hermaphrodite and male flowers in the same individual, is genetically fixed or induced, e.g. by fruit set. Little is known about the forces triggering andromonoecy in the Apiaceae. In the present study, a natural population of the protandrous Chaerophyllum bulbosum was investigated to elucidate architectural constraints and effects of resource reallocation.

Methods

Three sets of plants (each n = 15) were treated by hand pollination, pollinator exclusion and removal of low-order inflorescences. Fifteen untreated plants were left as controls.

Key Results

Untreated plants produce umbels up to the third branch order, with increasing proportions of male flowers from 15 % (terminal umbel) to 100 % (third-order umbels). Fruit set correspondingly decreases from 70% (terminal umbel) to <10 % (second-order umbels). Insignificant differences from hand-pollinated plants do not reveal any sign of pollinator limitation at the study site. Bagged individuals show the same increase in male flowers with age as untreated plants, indicating that the presence of andromonoecy is not induced by fruit set. After umbel removal, individuals tend to present a higher number of hermaphrodite flowers and fruits in the umbels of second and third order. Three plants (25 %) produced an additional branch order composed of 100 % male umbels.

Conclusions

Inherited andromonoecy and the plastic response to environmental conditions are interpreted as a self-regulating system saving investment costs and optimizing fruit set at the same time.  相似文献

Summary We examined the pollination success of Disa uniflora (Orchidaceae) in two habitats. Plants occurring in a rocky gorge were far more successful than plants occurring in an adjacent open valley. More than 55% of flowers in the gorge were pollinated and set fruit compared with less than 25% of flowers in the valley. These differences are explained by the preference of Meneris tulbaghia (Satyridae), the exclusive pollinator of the orchid, for rocky, sheltered habitats. Fruit set of hand-pollinated flowers did not differ significantly between the two habitats, indicating that resources did not account for the variation in fruiting success.  相似文献

Pollen limitation on seed production appears to be widespread among the angiosperms. However, few studies have examined if pollen limitation affects population growth. We supplementally hand-pollinated all flowers of 20 individuals of Ranunculus acris in the temperate meadow Rudsviki, Kaupanger, west Norway in 2003. The seed production did not respond to pollen addition, but the achene weight increased by 18% after supplemental pollination. To test whether this progeny quality response to the pollen-supplementation experiment could contribute to population growth, we sowed achenes from hand-pollinated plants and control plants into natural conditions in ten blocks at three densities. During the subsequent season (2004), the number of seedlings and juveniles (pooled) from hand-pollinated plants were substantially (64%) higher than from controls. There was also a clear positive effect of seed sowing-density on recruitment, suggesting that recruitment is seed-limited in this system. However, the density of vegetative individuals in 2005 was generally low and did not differ significantly between plots that received achenes from control or supplementary pollinated plants. Our results show that pollen limitation may affect germination through seed quality, and thereby impact plant population dynamics. However, in our system it appears that other factors, such as intra- and interspecific competition, may have outweighed the potential contribution from pollen limitation on population demography.  相似文献

Summary This study suggested that sexual selection is potentially an important factor in the maintenance of dioecy in the American holly, Ilex opaca (Aquifoliaceae). Sexual dimorphisms in flower production and phenology were highly significant in this understory tree. On average, individual males produced 7.4 times as many flowers as did female trees. Staminate flowers lasted only a single day, whereas pistillate flowers lasted 3–4 days, during which they showed no significant decline in their ability to produce fruit after pollination. Individual male trees opened their flower buds asynchronously during the season, maximizing the number of days they were in flower. Individual females opened their buds more synchronously, maximizing their floral display at one point in time. Females produced fruits in numbers that were somewhat less than proportional to their flower production. Fruit development was initiated from only 38.9% and 69.5% of pistillate flowers in 1987 and 1988, respectively. By the time of ripening, an average female had lost 62.3%, 24.3%, and 11.1% of its initial fruit crop in 1986, 1987, and 1988, respectively. The proportion of fruit lost in 1986 was independent of the number of fruit that initially began development. In 1988, artifically supplementing pollen to a large number of flowers failed to increase either fruit or seed production relative to control branches with unsupplemented flowers. This suggested that resource levels were likely more important than pollen availability in limiting female reproductive success. These observations on I. opaca were consistent with the expectations for a population in which male reproductive success continues to benefit from continued pollinator service and female reproductive success does not.  相似文献

It has been proposed that in non-rewarding animal-pollinated plants the pollination intensity should decrease with increasing population size and should increase with increasing local abundance of reward-producing plants. To test these hypotheses, we examined how population size, local abundance of Salix caprea, and tree cover were related to pollen removal and fruit production in 16 populations of the deceptive, early-flowering and bumblebee-pollinated orchid Calypso bulbosa in northern Sweden in 3 consecutive years. To determine whether fruit production was limited by pollinator visitation, supplemental hand-pollinations were performed in three populations in 3 years. Finally, to examine whether increased fruit production was associated with a reduction in future flower production, vegetative growth or survival, supplemental hand-pollination was repeated for 5 years in one population. The levels of pollen export, pollen deposition, and fruit set of C. bulbosa varied considerably among years and among populations. The proportion of plants exporting pollen was negatively related to population size, and positively related to density of S. caprea and to tree cover in 1 of the 3 years. In the other 2 years, no significant relationship was detected between proportion of plants exporting pollen and the latter three variables. In no year was there a significant relationship between fruit set and population size, density of S. caprea and tree cover. There was substantial among-year variation in the extent to which fruit production was limited by insufficient pollen deposition and in the amount of weather-induced damage to flowers and developing fruits. Fruit set was consistently higher in hand-pollinated than in open-pollinated plants, but this difference was statistically significant in only one of 3 years. Supplemental hand-pollination in 5 consecutive years increased cumulative fruit production 1.8 times, but did not affect flower production, plant size, or survival. Tree cover was negatively correlated with the incidence of frost damage in 1 year. The results indicate that life-time seed production may be pollen limited in C. bulbosa, and that variation in population size and local abundance of the early-flowering, nectar-producing S. caprea can only partly explain the extensive variation in pollinator visitation among populations of this species.  相似文献

To determine the breeding system of Lycium cestroides,several treatments were performed: self-, cross-, and geitonogamous pollinations, autonomous self-pollination, and a control (flowers exposed to natural pollinators). Production and quality of fruits and seeds as well as pollen tube growth were evaluated for each treatment. Experimental pollinations indicate that L. cestroides is self-incompatible since fruits were obtained only under cross-, and open-pollination treatments. However, in self- and geitonogamous hand pollinations, as well as in autonomous self-pollination, pollen tubes developed successfully and reached the ovules. The speed of pollen tube growth did not differ significantly among the different hand-pollinated flowers (cross-, self-, and geitonogamous). These facts indicate the presence of an ovarian self-incompatibility system. Significant differences were observed in fruit set, fruit size, and seed number per fruit between cross-pollinated flowers and open pollination (control). We studied the perennial vine Passiflora incarnata Linnaeus (Passifloraceae) in Alachua County, Florida, from May to August 1983 to determine the breeding system and investigate seasonal changes in phenotypic gender of individual plants. Passiflora incarnata is an obligate outcrosser, incapable of self-fertilization. The major pollinators were carpenter bees (Xylocopa sp.). The proportion of flowers setting fruit was not limited by pollinator service, but the weight of individual fruits and number of seeds/fruit was increased over naturally pollinated flowers by manually performing cross-pollination. Morphological differences in style position among flowers caused some flowers to function primarily as males and others to function as hermaphrodites. Although some of the flowers that functioned as males set fruit when manually cross-pollinated, the proportion of these male flowers capable of setting fruit was lower than the proportion of hermaphroditic flowers setting fruit when manually cross-pollinated. Further, some male flowers had atrophied ovary and styles and were completely incapable of setting fruit. Passiflora incarnata is thus functionally andromonoecious. The relative production of male versus hermaphroditic flowers varied among individuals and over the course of the flowering season. Unmanipulated plants in the population became increasingly male-biased in floral sex ratios as the reproductive season progressed. We attempted to modify phenotypic gender in experimental plants by limiting the ability of plants in some treatment groups to set fruit. Treatment groups significantly affected production of hermaphroditic flowers, but production of male flowers was not affected by treatment. Treatment did not significantly affect fruit weight, number of seeds per fruit or the percentage of hermaphroditic flowers that successfully matured fruit. These results suggest that andromonoecy in P. incarnata is a mechanism for adjusting allocation of reproductive effort to male and female function, and that maternal investment in this species is regulated primarily by varying production of hermaphroditic flowers.  相似文献

Myrosmodes cochleare is a terrestrial orchid restricted to high elevations of the northern Andes. It is self-compatible but not autogamous. Flowering begins at the apex of the inflorescence, but flower size increases steadily towards the base. Fruit set of selfed flowers was found to increase significantly from the apex to the base of the inflorescence. Open-pollinated fruit set was significantly lower than hand-pollinated fruit set overall, but the highest levels occurred in the middle of the inflorescence. Eumenid wasps and a calliphorid fly were observed to pollinate the flowers, but visits were rare and occurred only during infrequent warm periods.  相似文献

Pollinator attraction, pollen limitation, resource limitation, pollen donation and selective fruit abortion have all been proposed as processes explaining why hermaphroditic plants commonly produce many more flowers than mature fruit. We conducted a series of experiments in Arizona to investigate low fruit-to-flower ratios in senita cacti, which rely exclusively on pollinating seed-consumers. Selective abortion of fruit based on seed predators is of particular interest in this case because plants relying on pollinating seed-consumers are predicted to have such a mechanism to minimize seed loss. Pollinator attraction and pollen dispersal increased with flower number, but fruit set did not, refuting the hypothesis that excess flowers increase fruit set by attracting more pollinators. Fruit set of natural- and hand-pollinated flowers were not different, supporting the resource, rather than pollen, limitation hypothesis. Senita did abort fruit, but not selectively based on pollen quantity, pollen donors, or seed predators. Collectively, these results are consistent with sex allocation theory in that resource allocation to excess flower production can increase pollen dispersal and the male fitness function of flowers, but consequently results in reduced resources available for fruit set. Inconsistent with sex allocation theory, however, fruit production and the female fitness function of flowers may actually increase with flower production. This is because excess flower production lowers pollinator-to-flower ratios and results in fruit abortion, both of which limit the abundance and hence oviposition rates, of pre-dispersal seed predators.  相似文献

The phenology, major floral characteristics, fruiting levels, and breeding system ofCistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae), a common western Mediterranean shrub species, were studied in a southern Spanish population. The white, large (64 mm in diameter) flowers of this shrub appear during spring (March–May) and produce abundant pollen and nectar. In the year of study, flowers lasted up to three days, during which they were visited by a diverse array of insects including beetles, flies, and bees. Hand-pollinations revealed that flowers do not set any seed unless cross pollen is applied to the stigma. Microscopical observations indicate that self pollen tubes grow down the stigma but invariably fail to induce fruit maturation. At the plant level, all estimates of fecundity investigated (number of seeds per capsule, proportion of ovules developing into seed, and proportion of flowers setting fruit) were highly dependent on nearest neighbour distance, with isolated plants setting as little as 0% fruit. In contrast, plants within a clump often transformed into fruit as much as 90% of the flowers. At the population level, seed output was estimated to range between 3,000 and 270,000 seeds per plant during 1991.  相似文献

Many factors may affect reproduction of animal-pollinated species. In this study, the effects of pollen limitation, attractive traits (flower number, plant height and flower width) and flowering phenological traits (flowering onset, duration and synchrony) on female reproduction, as well as the patterns of variation in fruit and seed production within plants, were investigated in Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” over two flowering seasons (2018 and 2019). Fruit set was very high (90%), and pollen supplementation did not increase fruit and seed production in either year, indicating no pollen limitation. Fruit set, ovule number per fruit and mean individual seed weight per fruit were not affected by any of the six attractive and phenological traits in either year, whereas seed number per fruit was related to the three attractive traits in one or both years. Seed number per plant was positively affected by the three attractive traits and best explained by flower number in both years, but the effect of each of the three phenological traits on seed number per plant differed between years. Within plants, the fruit set, ovule number, seed set and seed number per fruit declined from early- to late-opening flowers, presumably because of resource preemption, but the mean individual seed weight did not vary across the flowering sequence. Our study shows that attractive traits of Paeonia ostii “Feng Dan” are more important than flowering phenological traits in the prediction of total seed production per plant.  相似文献

Patterns of fruit set were studied in Lavandula stoechas, a Mediterranean shrub commonly occurring in southern Spain. The small, hermaphroditic flowers of this shrub are aggregated into dense, headlike inflorescences and exhibit extensive variations in fecundity. It was shown that as the number of developing fruits in the inflorescence increased, the probability of a flower setting fruit, the size of seeds, and their germinability decreased, most likely because of strong within-inflorescence resource limitation. An experiment was designed to ascertain whether increased fertility in late-opening flowers could be induced through reallocation of reproductive resources between different inflorescences. The experiment consisted of removing half of the inflorescence buds from a set of plants and comparing their fecundity with that of intact individuals. Thinning did not increase the proportion of flowers setting fruit which, in fact, was slightly lower than that of intact individuals (probably due to some reduction of floral display brought about by thinning). Although treated plants produced heavier seeds than controls, results suggest that inflorescences of L. stoechas behave as autonomous modules among which resources cannot be reallocated. Predispersal seed predation by insects accounted on average for a 31% reduction in fruit set. Predation was found to be nonrandomly distributed within inflorescences, with most damage concentrated on late fruits (i.e., those with smaller and less germinable seeds).  相似文献

Fruit set varied from a mean of 44% to 93% among six populations of Veronica cusickii L. (Scrophulariaceae) spanning a distance of 13 km in the Olympic Mountains, WA. Hand pollinations in three populations showed that this variation resulted primarily from differences in the level of limitation by insect pollination. In every pollination, hand-pollinated flowers averaged at least 82% fruit set. In 1981 and 1982, addition of excess pollen significantly increased mean fruit set per plant in the Blue Mountain population, but not in two other populations with higher natural fruit sets. At Blue Mountain, hand pollination more than doubled the mean seed set of V. cusickii and also significantly increased seed set in two of three other species visited primarily by flies or solitary bees. Pollination-limitation appears to be common at this site where the weather is frequently cold and damp.  相似文献
