The evolutionary affinities within and among many groups of nine-primaried oscines remain unresolved. One such group is Sporophila, a large genus of New World tanager-finches. Our study focused particularly on clarifying the relationship between this genus and a closely related one, Oryzoborus, and on examining the phylogenetic affinities of the "capuchinos," a group of 11 Sporophila species that share a similar male plumage coloration pattern. Our phylogenetic analyses, based on 498 bp of mitochondrial DNA sequence, indicated that: (1) Oryzoborus is embedded within a well-supported clade containing all Sporophila species, which strongly suggests that both genera should be merged, (2) the species of capuchinos comprise a monophyletic group, implying that the plumage patterns common to all probably arose only once, and (3) the capuchinos clade is comprised of two sub-clades, one including two species that are distributed in northern South America and the other one containing eight species that are present south of the Amazon River. Mean sequence divergence among the southern capuchinos species was extremely low, suggesting a rapid radiation within the last half-million years that may be related to the high level of sexual selection present in the genus and might have been promoted by marine ingressions and egressions that occurred in some southern coastal regions of South America in the Late Pleistocene.  相似文献

A skeletal neomorph – the preglossale – is described from the tip of the tongue in Passer. This medial unpaired skeletal element is a dorsally open trough articulating with the anterior tips of the paraglossalia and supporting the heavy epidermal pad of the seed-cup. The large paired Mm. hypoglossus anterior originate from the posterior half of the preglossale and insert onto the anterior bodies of the paired paraglossalia; they serve to depress the anterior portion of the preglossale. A regular pattern of dermal papillae is present in the seed-cup; these are arranged in about 20 rows of six to 8 papillae per row. Each papilla contains a series of Merkel cells and associated nerve endings (touch receptors). The seed-cup serves to orient and hold the seed in place while it is being husked; the battery of tactile receptors provides information on the position of the seed on the tongue. The preglossale serves to support the seed-cup and to change its shape – the curvature of the dorsal surface – as it is depressed relative to the paraglossalia. The paraglossale and associated features of the seed-cup in Passer would provide a valuable preparation to study a diversity of problems such as developmental interactions between endomesodermal and ecto-mesenchymal skeletal features, the ontogenetical development of Merkel cells, and the sensory physiology of Merkel cells and their associated nerve endings as tactile corpuscles.  相似文献

The capuchinos are a group of birds in the genus Sporophila that has apparently radiated recently, as evidenced by their lack of mitochondrial genetic diversity. We obtained cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) sequences (or DNA barcodes) for the 11 species of the group and various outgroups. We compared the patterns of COI variability of the capuchinos with those of the largest barcode data set from neotropical birds currently available (500 species representing 51% of avian richness in Argentina), and subjected COI sequences to neighbour-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses as well as statistical parsimony network analysis. A clade within the capuchinos, the southern capuchinos, showed higher intraspecific and lower interspecific divergence than the remaining Argentine species. As most of the southern capuchinos shared COI haplotypes and pairwise distances within species were in many cases higher than distances between them, the phylogenetic affinities within the group remained unresolved. The observed genetic pattern is consistent with both incomplete lineage sorting and gene flow between species. The southern capuchinos constitute the only large group of species among the neotropical birds barcoded so far that are inseparable when using DNA barcodes, and one of few multispecies avian groups known to lack reciprocal monophyly. Extending the analysis to rapidly evolving nuclear and mitochondrial markers will be crucial to understanding this radiation. Apart from giving insights into the evolution of the capuchinos, this study shows how DNA barcoding can rapidly flag species or groups of species worthy of deeper study.  相似文献

Understanding oscine passerine dispersal patterns out of their Australian area of origin is hampered by a paucity of robust phylogenies. We constructed a molecular phylogeny of the oscine family, Oriolidae, which is distributed from Australia through to the Old World. We used the phylogeny to assess direction and timing of dispersal and whether dispersal can be linked with the well‐documented movements of geological terranes in the Indonesian Archipelago. We sampled 29 of 33 species of Oriolidae from fresh tissue and from toe pads from museum specimens, and examined two nuclear introns and two mitochondrial genes. Model‐based phylogenetic analyses yielded strong support for clades that generally mirrored classical systematics. Biogeographical analyses and divergence time estimates demonstrated that the family originated in the Australo‐Papuan region from where it dispersed first to Asia and then onwards to Africa and the Philippines before back‐colonising Asia and the Indonesian archipelago. Thus, contrary to several other avian families in the region, Oriolidae represents a sequential dispersal pattern from Australia to Africa via Asia. However, it is noteworthy that the Pacific islands and archipelagos remain uncolonised and that members inhabiting Wallacea are recent colonisers suggesting that Oriolidae are poorly adapted to island life.  相似文献

Regulation of numbers in the Great tit (Aves: Passeriformes)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
John R.  Krebs 《Journal of Zoology》1970,162(3):317-333
The census data of the Great tit collected by Perrins (1965) and others in Marley Wood near Oxford are analysed for density-dependence. Clutch size and hatching success are density-dependent and sufficiently so to regulate the population at the observed level (assuming that there is in addition a fairly large density-independent mortality). There may also be some weak density-dependent mortality outside the breeding season. The density-dependent variations in clutch size are probably in the main due to shortage of available food and density-dependent hatching failure is caused by predation. Territorial behaviour has been shown experimentally to determine breeding density, and may produce a density-dependent effect outside the breeding season. These three factors are responsible for regulation of the Great tit population in Marley Wood.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of the family Vangidae and representatives of several other passeriform families were inferred from 882 base positions of mitochondrial DNA sequences of 12S and 16S rRNA genes. Results indicated the monophyly of the Vangidae, which includes the genus Tylas, hitherto often placed in the family Pycnonotidae. Our results also revealed the Malagasy endemic Newtonia, a genus never previously assigned to the Vangidae, to be a member of this family. These results suggest the occurrence of an extensive in situ radiation of this family within Madagascar, and that the extant high diversity of this family is not the result of multiple colonizations from outside. The extremely high morphological and ecological diversification of the family seems to have been enhanced through the use and ultimate occupancy of vacant niches in this island. We present the first study of the warbler family Acrocephalidae based on one mitochondrial and three nuclear DNA loci, in total 2900 bp, including most or all of the species in three (Acrocephalus, Hippolais and Chloropeta) of the four genera and one species in the fourth genus (Nesillas) in this family. All three genera were suggested to be non-monophyletic, although the non-monophyly of Acrocephalus is not fully convincingly demonstrated. Six major clades were found, which agreed largely with the results from two earlier mitochondrial studies, and for which the names Hippolais, Iduna, Acrocephalus, Calamocichla, Notiocichla and Calamodus have been used. However, the results also revealed some new constellations, due to better resolution of deeper nodes and the inclusion of more taxa. The taxonomic implications are discussed.  相似文献

Based on their highly specialized "tracheophone" syrinx, the avian families Furnariidae (ovenbirds), Dendrocolaptidae (woodcreepers), Formicariidae (ground antbirds), Thamnophilidae (typical antbirds), Rhinocryptidae (tapaculos), and Conopophagidae (gnateaters) have long been recognized to constitute a monophyletic group of suboscine passerines. However, the monophyly of these families have been contested and their interrelationships are poorly understood, and this constrains the possibilities for interpreting adaptive tendencies in this very diverse group. In this study we present a higher-level phylogeny and classification for the tracheophone birds based on phylogenetic analyses of sequence data obtained from 32 ingroup taxa. Both mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and nuclear genes (c-myc, RAG-1, and myoglobin) have been sequenced, and more than 3000 bp were subjected to parsimony and maximum-likelihood analyses. The phylogenetic signals in the mitochondrial and nuclear genes were compared and found to be very similar. The results from the analysis of the combined dataset (all genes, but with transitions at third codon positions in the cytochrome b excluded) partly corroborate previous phylogenetic hypotheses, but several novel arrangements were also suggested. Especially interesting is the result that the genus Melanopareia represents a basal branch within the tracheophone group, positioned in the phylogenetic tree well away from the typical tapaculos with which it has been supposed to group. Other novel results include the observation that the ground antbirds are paraphyletic and that Sclerurus is the sister taxon to an ovenbird-woodcreeper clade. Patterns of generic richness within each clade suggest that the early differentiation of feeble-winged forest groups took place south of the Amazon Basin, while the more recent diversification was near the equator and (in tapaculos and ovenbirds) in the south of the continent.  相似文献

The family Rhinocryptidae comprises an assemblage of 12 genera and 55 species confined to the Neotropical region. Here we present the first morphology‐based phylogenetic study of the Rhinocryptidae, using 90 anatomical characters (62 osteological, 28 syringeal) scored for all genera of the family and representatives of all families of the infraorder Furnariides. Parsimony analysis of this dataset recovered 7428 equally most‐parsimonious trees. The strict consensus of those trees was completely resolved at the genus level, with the topology (Liosceles (Psilorhamphus ((Eleoscytalopus + Merulaxis) (Acropternis ((Teledromas + Rhinocrypta) ((Pteroptochos + Scelorchilus) (Eugralla (Myornis + Scytalopus)))))))). The monophyly of the Rhinocryptidae as presently understood was recovered with strong support [eight synapomorphies and Bremer support (BS) = 6). Strongly supported internal arrangements included the basal position of the Amazonian genus Liosceles relative to the rest of the family (four synapomorphies, BS = 4), a clade containing Acropternis through Scytalopus (six synapomorphies, BS = 4), and other less inclusive nodes. The main points of congruence between the present morphological phylogeny and previous molecular phylogenetic work on the family were clades supported by six or more synapomorphies and Bremer values of 6–7: Eleoscytalopus + Merulaxis (eight synapomorphies, BS = 6), Scelorchilus + Pteroptochos (seven synapomorphies, BS = 7), Rhinocrypta + Teledromas (seven synapomorphies, BS = 7), and Eugralla + Myornis + Scytalopus (six synapomorphies, BS = 6). A classification derived from the morphological phylogeny is proposed, with new suprageneric taxa being named and diagnosed. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 166 , 377–432.  相似文献
