Sorghum midge (Contarinia sorghicola Coq.) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is one of the most important pests of grain sorghum. The effects of different insecticides applied at the complete‐an‐thesis stage for insect control, and host plant resistance on the parasitization of sorghum midge, were studied. Tetrastichus spp. and Eupelmus popa are the major parasites of sorghum midge larvae. Of the several insecticides tested, monocrotophos reduced midge parasitization by half compared with the untreated control. Midge parasitization was lower on midge‐resistant genotypes. Amongst the lines resistant to sorghum midge, the levels of parasitization were higher on the moderately resistant lines IS 10132 and PM 9760 compared to those on IS 3461, IS 7005, IS 9807, IS 19512 and AF 28, etc. Parasite activity closely followed the midge population density across sowing dates. The role of these factors on the effectiveness of midge parasites in integrated pest management are discussed.  相似文献

1. Conspecific populations living in habitats with different risks of predation often show phenotypic variation in defensive traits. Traits of two species of mayflies (Baetidae: Baetis bicaudatus and Baetis sp. nov.) differ between populations living in fish and fishless streams in a high altitude drainage basin in western Colorado, U.S.A. We tested for genetic differentiation between mayfly populations in these two habitat types, assuming that lack of genetic differentiation would be consistent with the hypothesis that those traits are phenotypically plastic. 2. Previous work has shown that larvae of both species behave differently and undergo different developmental pathways in adjacent fish and fishless streams. These phenotypic differences in behaviour and development have been induced experimentally, suggesting that populations from fishless streams have the genetic capability to respond to fish. 3. During summer 2001 we collected Baetis larvae from several fish and fishless streams, and from fish and fishless sections of the same streams. We used allozymes and a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial gene to examine genetic variation of Baetis individuals within and among streams. 4. Results showed that genetic variation exists among populations of the same species of Baetis from different streams, but none of that variation was associated with the presence or absence of fish. These data confirm that populations of Baetis living in fish and fishless streams are not genetically distinct, and are consistent with the hypothesis that traits associated with environments of different risk are phenotypically plastic.  相似文献

Three products based on compounds of biological origin were tested for their ability tocontrol the raspberry midge blight in theSiberian region of Russia. Bacillusthuringiensis subsp. israelensis(BACTICIDE®) and Streptomycesavermitilis metabolites (PHYTOVERM®) were used against Thomasiniana theobaldi (ageneral member of the midge blight) andCHITINASE was used against fungi (mainly Didymella applanata) associated with T. theobaldi. The BACTICIDE®(0.2%) and PHYTOVERM® (0.2%) sprays caused a 2-fold decrease in midge blight severity and the sameeffect was obtained with chemical insecticides.The CHITINASE (1%) spray caused a 4-folddecrease in the severity of midge blight. Inaddition, CHITINASE and PHYTOVERM®caused a significant suppression of theindependent spur blight. These studies form thebasis for further evaluation of ecologicallysafe control of the raspberry midge blight.  相似文献

Colonization of Nostoc verrucosum Vaucher by chironomid larvae (Cricotopus sp.) has been observed in a mountain stream in northeastern Spain. Colonies containing the midge were globose, 1.4 mm thick, 3.1 mm long, and 2.4 mm wide. The form of the pads was slightly compressed, arranged in parallel to or slightly oblique to the stream flow. The midge–Nostoc association shows a more globose growth form than that described for N. parmelioides Kütz. (ear‐like forms). Inhabited pads were usually located in the upper part of the colonies, and the midge did not contact the substratum. The midge was therefore unable to secure the colony to the substratum. The morphology and dimensions of the Nostoc cells in pads with Cricotopus were very similar to those without the midge. The globose growth form of the colonized pads does not suggest any special advantage with respect to chironomid‐free N. verrucosum concerning flow preferences and light exposure in the stream habitat.  相似文献

Changes in larval density and movement behavior of a commensal midge, Nanocladius (Plecopteracoluthus) sp. #4, were monitored for 26 weeks in recirculating laboratory streams. Adults were captured at emergence, sexed, and weighed to assess the effect of larval density and movement behavior on emergence success and adult size. The density of midges on hosts declined with time and coincided with a springtime increase in larval movement frequency. Midges residing on hosts with high spring densities emerged significantly less than midges on hosts with low densities. Resident midge density on hosts did not influence the likelihood of successful colonization by commensals and colonizers showed no preference for initial attachment site on hosts. However, colonizing midges emerged significantly less than resident midges. Similarly, successful emergers changed tube positions significantly less often as larvae relative to non-emergers. There was no difference in adult body weight of resident midges and colonists/movers, but adult males which emerged from commensal-laden (high density) hosts were significantly smaller than males from low density hosts. These data indicate larval density and movement behavior may have strong fitness consequences for commensal midges.  相似文献

The gall midge Obolodiplosis robiniae is a pest of black locust Robinia pseudoacacia. The species was recently introduced into Europe and it is nowadays a usual insect in Slovakia, where two-year field surveys were undertaken during 2007–2008. The main objective of this study was to determine the natural enemies attacking O. robiniae and estimate their influence on midge population, less than 3 years after its introduction. Eight parasitoids and bushcricket Tettigonia viridissima were responsible for midge regulation. The parasitoid complex was not typically that of an introduced species as it was predicted. Firstly, the midge was heavily influenced by a specialized parasitoid Platygaster robiniae, which was a predominant parasitoid and accounted for 98% of all specimens reared. Secondly, annual larval parasitism varied from 5.4 to 10.8%, though the late season average parasitism achieved 26.0% and often exceeded 40%. P. robiniae was also very efficient in exploiting galls and was capable of consistently regulating midge population. The surveys demonstrated that the average cumulative impact of natural enemies on the midge was substantial. Stably around 20% of attacked galls were recorded during the late summer. Bushcrickets were as efficient as parasitoids and played an important role at control, especially during lack of parasitoids. Greater impact of parasitoids was found in the larger settlements than it was in the countryside, when countertendency was valid for bushcrickets. There is an indication that O. robiniae parasitized by specialized parasitoid, and attacked by bushcrickets represents only a moderate risk for R. pseudoacacia or forest stands.  相似文献

1. A knowledge of how individual behaviour affects populations in nature is needed to understand many ecologically important processes, such as the dispersal of larval insects in streams. The influence of chemical cues from drift‐feeding fish on the drift dispersal of mayflies has been documented in small experimental channels (i.e. < 3 m), but their influence on dispersal in natural systems (e.g. 30 m stream reaches) is unclear. 2. Using surveys in 10 Rocky Mountain streams in Western Colorado we examined whether the effects of predatory brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) on mayfly drift, that were apparent in stream‐side channels, could also be detected in natural streams. 3. In channel experiments, the drift of Baetis bicaudatus (Baetidae) was more responsive to variation in the concentration of chemical cues from brook trout than that of another mayfly, Epeorus deceptivus (Heptageniidae). The rate of brook trout predation on drifting mayflies of both species in a 2‐m long observation tank was higher during the day (60–75%) but still measurable at night (5–10%). Epeorus individuals released into the water column were more vulnerable to trout predation by both day and night than were Baetis larvae treated similarly. 4. Drift of all mayfly taxa in five fishless streams was aperiodic, whereas their drift was nocturnal in five trout streams. The propensity of mayflies to drift was decreased during the day and increased during the night in trout streams compared with fishless streams. In contrast to the channel experiments, fish biomass and density did not alter the nocturnal nature nor magnitude of mayfly drift in natural streams. 5. In combination, these results indicate that mayflies respond to subtle differences in concentration of fish cues in experimental channels. However, temporal and spatial variation in fish cues available to mayflies in natural streams may have obscured our ability to detect responses at larger scales.  相似文献

The orange blossom wheat midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a significant pest of wheat (Triticum spp.) grown in the Northern Hemisphere. It was accidently introduced to North America over 200 years ago and has subsequently spread throughout the northern Great Plains. Since 2010, several Canadian spring wheat varieties containing the resistance gene Sm1 have been released. Due to the potential of wheat midge populations to evolve virulent biotypes to Sm1, cultivars containing Sm1 are grown with a susceptible cultivar in an interspersed refuge. An understanding of the genetic diversity of wheat midge populations could provide important information on the potential development of resistance to Sm1. In the current study, we used two mitochondrial genes (CO1 and ND4) from wheat midge collected across the northern Great Plains and Québec in North America to assess population structure and genetic diversity. We found limited genetic diversity and population structure across the sampled North American populations. We also assessed North American haplotype similarity to wheat midge collected from Europe and China and found high similarity between North American and European populations, although sampling in Europe was limited. This supports the hypothesis that North American populations originated from Europe.  相似文献

Three chironomid midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) species (Cricotopus sylvestris (Fabricius); Psectrocladius limbatellus (Holmgren), Tanytarsus fimbriatus Reiss and Fittkau) live at high densities and dominate the midge assemblage found in slow sand filter beds. After filter beds are drained and cleaned, the substratum consists of sand of different particle sizes, but once beds are refilled and in operation, organic material accumulates on the sand and Cladophora grows. In laboratory experiments, we found that larvae of the three midge species preferred different substratum types: C. sylvestris preferred sand to both Cladophora and organic material, P. limbatellus preferred Cladophora, and Tanytarsus sp. preferred organic material. Some evidence of preference for one particle size was also found, but compared with substratum types, this was neither as marked or contrasting between the three species. The contrasting preferences that we found in the laboratory suggest that the substratum will influence the microdistribution of the three species in filter beds, and provide further evidence of the importance of substratum in midge assemblages.  相似文献

The gall midge, Orseolia oryzae, is a major dipteran pest of rice affecting most rice growing regions in Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa. Chemical and other cultural methods for control of this pest are neither very effective nor environmentally safe. The gall midge problem is further compounded by the fact that there are many biotypes of this insect and new biotypes are continuously evolving. However, resistance to this pest is found in the rice germ plasm. Resistance is generally governed by single dominant genes and a number of non-allelic resistance genes that confer resistance to different biotypes have been identified. Genetic studies have revealed that there is a gene-for-gene interaction between the different biotypes of gall midge and the various resistance genes found in rice. This review discusses different aspects of the process of infestation by the rice gall midge and its interaction with its host. Identification of the gall midge biotypes by conventional methods is a long and tedious process. The review discusses the PCR-based molecular markers that have been developed recently to speed up the identification process. Similarly, molecular markers have been developed for two gall midge resistance genes in rice – Gm2 and Gm4t – and these markers are now being used for marker-assisted selection. The mapping, tagging and map-based gene cloning of one of these genes – Gm2 – has also been discussed. A new genus Oxycephalomyia is described to contain the gall midge that was previously known as Asteralobia styraci (Shinji). Oxycephalomyia styraci, comb. nov., produces leaf vein galls on Styrax japonicus (Styracaceae). The adult of O. styraci is redescribed, and its full‐grown larva and pupa are described for the first time. The annual life cycle of the gall midge in northern Kyushu was clarified; the first instars overwinter in the galls on the host plant. However, the galls of O. styraci mature much later in the season than those of other gall midges with a similar life history pattern, and the durations of second and third larval instars are remarkably short. Such a life history pattern is considered to have an adaptive significance in avoiding larval parasitism, particularly by early attackers. The number of host axillary buds as oviposition sites decreased in bearing years and increased in off years, but there was no sign of oviposition site shortage even in bearing years, probably due to the low population density of the gall midge. An unidentified lepidopteran that feeds on galled and ungalled host buds and a Torymus sp. that attacks pupae of O. styraci were recognized as mortality factors of the gall midge.  相似文献

Platygaster diplosisae and Aprostocetus procerae attack both the African rice gall midge (AfRGM), Orseolia oryzivora, and Orseolia bonzii, a closely related gall midge that feeds on Paspalum scrobiculatum. 1. If species disproportionately influence ecosystem functioning and also differ in their sensitivities to environmental conditions, the selective removal of species by anthropogenic stressors may lead to strong effects on ecosystem processes. We evaluated whether these circumstances held for several Colorado, U.S.A. streams stressed by Zn. 2. Benthic invertebrates and chemistry were sampled in five second–third order streams for 1 year. Study streams differed in dissolved metal concentrations, but were otherwise similar in chemical and physical characteristics. Secondary production of leaf‐shredding insects was estimated using the increment summation and size‐frequency methods. Leaf litter breakdown rates were estimated by retrieving litter‐bags over a 171 day period. Microbial activity on leaf litter was measured in the laboratory using changes in oxygen concentration over a 48 h incubation period. 3. Dissolved Zn concentrations varied eightfold among two reference and three polluted streams. Total secondary production of shredders was negatively associated with metal contamination. Secondary production in reference streams was dominated by Taenionema pallidum. Results of previous studies and the current investigation demonstrate that this shredder is highly sensitive to metals in Colorado headwater streams. Leaf litter breakdown rates were similar between reference streams and declined significantly in the polluted streams. Microbial respiration at the most contaminated site was significantly lower than at reference sites. 4. Our results supported the hypothesis that some shredder species contribute disproportionately to leaf litter breakdown. Furthermore, the functionally dominant taxon was also the most sensitive to metal contamination. We conclude that leaf litter breakdown in our study streams lacked functional redundancy and was therefore highly sensitive to contaminant‐induced alterations in community structure. We argue for the necessity of simultaneously measuring community structure and ecosystem function in anthropogenically stressed ecosystems.  相似文献

Current velocity is a pervasive feature of lotic systems, yet this defining environmental variable is rarely examined as a factor for regulating stream herbivory. To investigate how current modifies herbivory in the upper Colorado River, U.S.A., loops of electrified fencing wire were used to reduce in situ grazer densities on 30 × 30 cm tile substrates. After 45 d, electrified tiles had significantly fewer grazers (P = 0.03) and >2X more algal biomass than controls (P = 0.0002). Reduced grazing on electrified tiles yielded periphytic assemblages having more diatoms and chlorophytes, as well as greater algal species richness. Current velocity effects alone did not significantly regulate algal abundance; however, the interaction between current velocity and grazer exclusion resulted in more algae in slow vs. fast current (P = 0.02). Grazer abundances were similar between fast and slow current velocities, suggesting that grazers in the Colorado River differ in their ability to regulate algae across the current velocity gradient. Our results indicate that stream current-mediated herbivory in streams may be more important than is generally recognized.  相似文献

Yearly population fluctuations of M. pustulae were investigated at 19 sites in Kyushu. In sites where a platygastrid is the only parasitoid of the midge, the percentage parasitism was very low in the incipient stage of the outbreak of the midge populations. After the number of midges reached a peak, the midge populations declined as the percentage parasitism increased, and then the outbreak ceased. On the other hand, in several populations no outbreak was found and the percentage parasitism was constantly at a high level. Therefore, the immediate cause for the outbreak seemed to be a decline of the percentage parasitism. Like the midge, the platygastrid has one generation each year, and its females also emerge in spring to deposit their eggs within host eggs. The decline of the percentage parasitism seemed to be mainly affected by the time lag between emergence periods of M. pustulae and the platygastrid. In the midge populations parasitized by both the platygastrid and a eulophid (Chrysonotomyia sp.), an extinction of the population was observed, resulting from parasitism by the latter, Chrysonotomyia sp. is polyphagous and multivoltine, and is a late parasitoid, as discussed byAskew (1975). When the density of the midges is very low, the platygastrid may leave the host eggs unparasitized, while Chrysonotomyia sp. may not, because the mature galls are conspicuous.  相似文献

Decomposition rate of plant material in the Parana Medio River (Argentina)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The degradation of plant material in the centre of two plain streams (the Parana Medio River main channel – 0.6 m.s–1 - and the Colorado River – 0.03 m.s.–1) was studied in order to obtain a degradation coefficient for the species Panicum prionitis, Paspalum repens and Eichhornia crassipes, representative of the vegetation of the area of the future man-made lake of the Parana Medio, Dam. The experimental sites were chosen at the limit (minimum and maximum) velocities of the two streams in the valley to be flooded.The plant samples (submerged at different depths) were periodically analysed during 80 days, the experimental data being fitted to an exponential decomposition model. Degradation coefficients ranged from 0.0357 to 0.0682 day–1 (P. prionitis); from 0.0182 to 0.0643 day–1 (P. repens) and from 0.0120 to 0.0425 day–1 (E. crassipes). The incidence of leaching and fragmentation on the decomposition of plant materials was also studied.  相似文献

The Wet Tropics bioregion of north‐eastern Australia has been subject to extensive fluctuations in climate throughout the late Pliocene and Pleistocene. Cycles of rainforest contraction and expansion of dry sclerophyll forest associated with such climatic fluctuations are postulated to have played a major role in driving geographical endemism in terrestrial rainforest taxa. Consequences for the distributions of aquatic organisms, however, are poorly understood. The Australian non‐biting midge species Echinocladius martini Cranston (Diptera: Chironomidae), although restricted to cool, well‐forested freshwater streams, has been considered to be able to disperse among populations located in isolated rainforest pockets during periods of sclerophyllous forest expansion, potentially limiting the effect of climatic fluctuations on patterns of endemism. In this study, mitochondrial COI and 16S data were analysed for E. martini collected from eight sites spanning the Wet Tropics bioregion to assess the scale and extent of phylogeographic structure. Analyses of genetic structure showed several highly divergent cryptic lineages with restricted geographical distributions. Within one of the identified lineages, strong genetic structure implied that dispersal among proximate (<1 km apart) streams was extremely restricted. The results suggest that vicariant processes, most likely due to the systemic drying of the Australian continent during the Plio‐Pleistocene, might have fragmented historical E. martini populations and, hence, promoted divergence in allopatry.  相似文献

Periphyton and benthic invertebrates assemblages were studied at the confluence of two Rocky Mountain streams, Deer Creek and the Snake River near Montezuma, Colorado. Upstream from the confluence the Snake River is acidic and enriched in dissolved trace metals, while Deer Creek is a typical Rocky Mountain stream. In the Snake River, downstream from the confluence, the pH increases and hydrous metal oxides precipitate and cover the streambed. The algal and benthic invertebrate communities in the upstream reaches of the Snake River and in Deer Creek were very different. A liverwort, Scapania undulata var. undulata, was abundant in the Snake River, and although periphyton were very sparse, there were as many benthic invertebrates as in Deer Creek. Downstream from the confleunce, the precipitation of hydrous metal oxides greatly decreased the abundance of periphyton and benthic invertebrates. This study shows that in streams metal precipitates covering the streambed may have a more deleterious effect on stream communities than high metal-ion activities.  相似文献

A chironomid midge, Cricotopus lebetis Sublette (Diptera: Chironomidae), was discovered feeding on Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) in Crystal River, Citrus, Co., Florida, in the 1990s. Larvae of the midge mine the apical meristems of hydrilla, causing terminal branching and stunting of the plant. We investigated the fundamental host range of the midge by conducting a series of no-choice and paired-choice tests. No-choice developmental tests with neonate larvae revealed that the fundamental host range of C. lebetis included not only on hydrilla but also several other aquatic plants in different families, suggesting that this insect is not a hydrilla specialist. In paired-choice bioassays, larval colonisation of Elodea canadensis Michx. (Hydrocharitaceae) and Najas guadalupensis (Spreng.) Magnus (Najadaceae) was greater than colonisation of H. verticillata. Behavioural bioassays in a Y-tube olfactometer and in Petri dishes suggested that neonate larvae were not able to locate host plant material, whereas older larvae were successful in finding hosts. In paired-choice oviposition tests, adult females discriminated between potential oviposition sites, with greater numbers of eggs laid on E. canadensis and N. guadalupensis than on H. verticillata. This study is the first detailed account of host searching and oviposition behaviour of a phytophagous chironomid midge. The results will be used to assess the potential value of C. lebetis as a biological control agent of hydrilla.  相似文献
