Classification within the genusRosa is problematic due to ± continuous variation of morphological characters. The dogroses, (Rosa, sectionCaninae) are classified only by their unique meiotic system not by directly visible characters. The intrasectional structure remains insufficient, as the characters (glands, hairs and prickles) are known to exhibit great morphological divergence affected by both genetic plasticity and environmental influences. Taxonomy of dogroses follows a highly artificial system which allows us to identify morphospecies, which are not necessarily evolutionary species. However, SEM-studies in theCaninae revealed that all taxa of the subsectionRubiginosae are characterised by a granule type of epicuticular waxes, whereas members from the other subsections (with three exceptions) form triangular rodlets. Comparison with specimens grown under the same conditions confirmed these findings on natural populations and additionally revealed that following artificial hybridism, offspring develop the maternal type of wax structure due to the matroclinal inheritance in this section.

Chemical surface characters play a decisive role in the interaction between plants and their environment. Maternal or paternal inheritance of wax characters in Rosa, section Caninae may allow for ecological niche differentiation according to the parental evolutionary constraints. If so, the radiation of hybrid offspring may reflect the parentally determined framework of interaction and selection against pathogens and abiotic stresses. We tested the inheritance of cuticular chemical wax parameters of reciprocal hybrids within Rosa, section Caninae, the dogroses. We not only found an extremely rich spectrum of chemical compounds on abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of dogroses, but also a maternally skewed inheritance of some of these wax characters. The possible role of these findings for the evolution of the allopolyploid dogrose complex is discussed.

Background and Aims The genus Rosa (150–200 species) is widely distributed throughout temperate and sub-tropical habitats from the northern hemisphere to tropical Asia, with only one tropical African species. In order to better understand the evolution of roses, this study examines infrageneric relationships with respect to conventional taxonomy, considers the extent of allopolyploidization and infers macroevolutionary processes that have led to the current distribution of the genus. Methods Phylogenetic relationships among 101 species of the genus Rosa were reconstructed using sequences from the plastid psbA-trnH spacer, trnL intron, trnL-F spacer, trnS-G spacer and trnG intron, as well as from nuclear glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), which was used to identify putative allopolyploids and infer their possible origins. Chloroplast phylogeny was used to estimate divergence times and reconstruct ancestral areas.Key Results Most subgenera and sections defined by traditional taxonomy are not monophyletic. However, several clades are partly consistent with currently recognized sections. Allopolyploidy seems to have played an important role in stabilizing intersectional hybrids. Biogeographic analyses suggest that Asia played a central role as a genetic reservoir in the evolution of the genus Rosa. Conclusions The ancestral area reconstruction suggests that despite an early presence on the American continent, most extant American species are the results of a later re-colonization from Asia, probably through the Bering Land Bridge. The results suggest more recent exchanges between Asia and western North America than with eastern North America. The current distribution of roses from the Synstylae lineage in Europe is probably the result of a migration from Asia approx. 30 million years ago, after the closure of the Turgai strait. Directions for a new sectional classification of the genus Rosa are proposed, and the analyses provide an evolutionary framework for future studies on this notoriously difficult genus.

The mycorrhizae of Entoloma saepium on Rosa sp. are comprehensively described and compared to other mycorrhizae of the genus Entoloma, as well as to similar unidentified mycorrhizae known from the literature. E. saepium appears to be more a parasite than a symbiont, as it invades and almost completely destroys the root meristem and young root cells.Considered as part IL of the series Studies on ectomycorrhizae; part XLVIII: Waller and Agerer (1993)

Within Rosa section Caninae (dogroses) two different growth types exist, arching (L-type) and erect (D-type). Due to the specific mode of chromosome allocation during meiosis, character inheritance in dogroses is maternally skewed. In this paper we try to assess the mode of inheritance of the ‘growth form’ in reciprocal hybrids of R. canina L. and R. rubiginosa L. to predict possible ecological niches and radiation processes of hybridogenic offspring. A quantitative analysis of mechanical properties indicates that neither an expected parentally skewed nor an intermediate habit was expressed by the hybrids, but a dominant L-type as in R. canina, regardless of the parental relationship (pollen-parent or seed-parent). Our results implicate two possible scenarios to be further tested: (a) R. canina acts as a species with a dominant allele for the growth form character. If so, this would be the first evidence of a Mendelian character inheritance in the dogroses. (b) ‘Growth form’ in the dogroses is not a Mendelian character, but a syndrom which realises as an emergent functional property with underlying phenotypic structural differences in stem and wood anatomy. The first two authors contributed equally to the study.

Rhinogobio is a cyprinid genus restricted to the river drainages of China. Sequences of the mitochondrial DNA control region were determined for four Rhinogobio species and one outgroup species, Coreius heterodon, to investigate the phylogenetic relationships within the genus. The control region of the Rhinogobiospecies ranges from 922 to 930 base pairs and comprises 930 base pairs in Coreius. Our phylogenetic analysis indicates two distinct lineages in the genus Rhinogobio. The first includes only R R. ventralis. In the second lineage there are three species, two closely related species R.cylindricus andR.hunanensis, and their sister speciesR. typus. An analysis of character adaptations suggests an evolutionary trend in this genus towards a relatively lower body and caudal peduncle depth, a shorter dorsal fin, and a more anterior anus. In addition, there is a trend towards shorter barbels and relatively larger eyes. Some or all of these traits may be associated with a habitat shift from fast-flowing turbid rivers to slower-flowing clear river habitats.

The family Sordariaceae incorporates a number of fungi that are excellent model organisms for various biological, biochemical, ecological, genetic and evolutionary studies. To determine the evolutionary relationships within this group and their respective phylogenetic placements, multiple-gene sequences (partial nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA, nuclear ITS ribosomal DNA and partial nuclear β-tubulin) were analysed using maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Analyses of different gene datasets were performed individually and then combined to generate phylogenies. We report that Sordariaceae, with the exclusion Apodus and Diplogelasinospora, is a monophyletic group. Apodus and Diplogelasinospora are related to Lasiosphaeriaceae. Multiple gene analyses suggest that the spore sheath is not a phylogenetically significant character to segregate Asordaria from Sordaria. Smooth-spored Sordaria species (including so-called Asordaria species) constitute a natural group. Asordaria is therefore congeneric with Sordaria. Anixiella species nested among Gelasinospora species, providing further evidence that non-ostiolate ascomata have evolved from ostiolate ascomata on several independent occasions. This study agrees with previous studies that show heterothallic Neurospora species to be monophyletic, but that homothallic ones may have a multiple origins. Although Gelasinospora and Neurospora are closely related and not resolved as monophyletic groups, there is insufficient evidence to place currently accepted Gelasinospora and Neurospora species into the same genus.

Cell-suspension cultures ofSpinacia andRosa accumulated a cell wall protein, extensin, in a form that was amenable to leaching from the surface of the living cells by a brief treatment with non-toxic salts. Cultures ofLycopersicon, Capsicum, Acer andFestuca did not accumulate this class of extensin. InSpinacia andRosa, optimum yields of leachable extensin were achieved from young cultures, in media at relatively low pH, by leaching with 0.1 M CaCl2. Older cultures, pH values >6.5, and LaCl3 or higher concentrations of CaCl2 were less effective.

Dinoflagellates of the genus Alexandrium are known producers of paralytic shellfish toxins. Species within the genus have similar phenotypes making morphological identification problematical. The use of Alexandrium rDNA sequence data is therefore increasing, resulting in the improved resolution of evolutionary relationships by phylogenetic inferences. However, the true branching pattern within Alexandrium remains unresolved, with minimal support shown for the main phylogentic branch. The aim of this study is to improve phylogenetic resolution via a concatenated rDNA approach with a broad sample of taxa, allowing inference of the evolutionary pattern between species and toxins. 27 Alexandrium strains from 10 species were tested with HPLC for PSP toxin presence and additionally sequenced for 18S, ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2 and 28S rDNA before being phylogenetically inferred together with all available orthologous sequences from NCBI. The resulting alignment is the largest to date for the genus, in terms of both inferred characters and taxa, thus allowing for the improved phylogenetic resolution of evolutionary patterns there in. No phylogenetic pattern between PSP producing and non-producing strains could be established, however the terminal tamarense complex was shown to produce more PSP analogues than basal clades. Additionally, we distinguish a high number of polymorphic regions between the two copies of A. fundyense rDNA, thus allowing us to demonstrate the presence of chimeric sequences within GenBank, as well as a possible over estimation of diversification within the tamarense complex.

The aim of this study was to improve our knowledge about the taxonomy and phylogeny of the family Saprolegniaceae, a group of water molds including several pathogens of plants, fish and crustacea. ITS and LSU rDNA were sequenced for representatives of forty species corresponding to ten genera (Achlya, Aphanomyces, Brevilegnia, Dictyuchus, Leptolegenia, Plectospira, Pythiopsis, Saprolegnia, Thraustotheca). Phenetic and cladistic analyses were then carried out. The species Brevilegnia bispora does not appear to belong to the family Saprolegniaceae. Plectospira myrianda clusters with Aphanomyces spp. and they constitute an ancestral group. (Thraustotheca clavata is closely related to the eccentric species of the genus Achlya. The genus Achlya appears polyphyletic, corroborating more or less the three known subgroups, defined by their sexual spore type (eccentric, centric and subcentric). The achlyoid type of spore dehiscence, shared by Aphanomyces and Achlya genera, is shown to be an ancestral character. The saprolegnioid, dictyoid and thraustothecoid types of spore dehiscence are derived characters but their relative evolutionary positions are not resolved.

A cladistic analysis of the genusAnisopappus (Asteraceae: Inuleae) has been undertaken. A hypothesis of species interrelationships in the genus is presented for the first time. The analysis also includedArctotis (Arctoteae), used as outgroup, and five additional genera from theInuleae: Geigeria, Calostephane, Asteriscus, Buphthalmum, Pulicaria, andInula. It is concluded thatAnisopappus is a monophyletic group situated at the base of the tribe, diagnosed by, e.g., their obtuse stylar sweeping-hairs. The species with acute sweeping-hairs were found to be derived within the genus. Problems concerning species delimitation, biogeography and character evolution in the genus are briefly discussed.

Chromosome evolution (including polyploidy, dysploidy, and structural changes) as well as hybridization and introgression are recognized as important aspects in plant speciation. A suitable group for investigating the evolutionary role of chromosome number changes and reticulation is the medium-sized genus Melampodium (Millerieae, Asteraceae), which contains several chromosome base numbers (x = 9, 10, 11, 12, 14) and a number of polyploid species, including putative allopolyploids. A molecular phylogenetic analysis employing both nuclear (ITS) and plastid (matK) DNA sequences, and including all species of the genus, suggests that chromosome base numbers are predictive of evolutionary lineages within Melampodium. Dysploidy, therefore, has clearly been important during evolution of the group. Reticulate evolution is evident with allopolyploids, which prevail over autopolyploids and several of which are confirmed here for the first time, and also (but less often) on the diploid level. Within sect. Melampodium, the complex pattern of bifurcating phylogenetic structure among diploid taxa overlain by reticulate relationships from allopolyploids has non-trivial implications for intrasectional classification.

Phylogenetic utility of two nuclear genes (GBSSI-2 and DHAR) was explored in genus Fragaria in order to clarify phylogenetic relationships among taxa and to elucidate the origin of the polyploid species. Orthology of the amplified products was assessed by several methods. Our results strongly suggest the loss of one GBSSI duplicated copy (GBSSI-1) in the Fragariinae subtribe. Phylogenetic analyses provided new insights into the evolutionary history of Fragaria, such as evidence supporting the presence of three main diploid genomic pools in the genus and demonstrating the occurrence of independent events of polyploidisation. In addition, the data provide evidence supporting an allopolyploid origin of the hexaploid F. moschata, and the octoploids F. chiloensis, F. iturupensis and F. virginiana. Accordingly, a new pattern summarizing our present knowledge on the Fragaria evolutionary history is proposed. Additionally, sequence analyses also revealed relaxed constraints on homoeologous copies at high ploidy level, as demonstrated by deletion events within DHAR coding sequences of some allo-octoploid haplotypes.

Veratrum (Melanthiaceae) comprises ca. 27 species with highly variable morphology. This study aims to construct the molecular phylogeny of this genus to infer its floral evolution and historical biogeography, which have not been examined in detail before. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses were performed on the separate and combined ITS, trnL-F, and atpB-rbcL sequences to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree of the genus. All Veratrum taxa formed a monophyletic group, within which two distinct clades were distinguished: species with white-to-green perianth formed one highly supported clade, and the species with black-purple perianth constituted another highly supported clade. Phylogenetic inference on flower color evolution suggested that white-to-green perianth was a plesiomorphic state and black-purple perianth was apomorphic for Veratrum. When species distribution areas were traced as a multi-state character, parsimonious optimization inferred that Veratrum possibly originated in East Asia. Our study confirmed previous phylogenetic and taxonomic suggestions on this genus and provided a typical example of plant radiation across the Northern Hemisphere.

Euphrasia includes perennial or annual green parasitic plants, and has a disjunct bipolar distribution except for one transtropical connection across the high mountains of Oceania. The disjunction is coupled with strikingly contrasting patterns of morphological diversity between the southern and northern hemispheres, making it an exciting model to study processes of evolutionary diversification which shaped present floras. We inferred the relationships among 51 species representing 14 of the 15 sections of the genus based on nrDNA ITS and cpDNA trnL intron, trnL-trnF and atpB-rbcL intergenic spacers. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference support monophyly of the genus and of several intrageneric groups characterized by morphology, ploidy level, and geographic range. Molecular phylogenetic dating using Bayesian “relaxed” clock methods suggests that the earliest Euphrasia radiations occurred minimum 11–8 Mya with bipolarity being achieved 7–5 Mya. Biogeographic analyses using explicit model-based approach inferred Eurasia as an ancestral area for the genus. The most parsimonious reconstruction found by a dispersal-vicariance analysis requires 17 dispersals to account for the current biogeographic pattern and supports Eurasian origin for Euphrasia. Both long-distance dispersal and across land vicariance can be invoked to explain the diversification in the genus, which experienced rapid radiations driven by new ecological opportunities of the late Pliocene and Pleistocene but also retained a set of local endemic or relict species of an earlier origin.

To determine the evolutionary positions of the conifer genera Amentotaxus, Phyllocladus, and Nageia, we obtained 18S rRNA sequences from 11 new taxa representing the major living orders and families of gymnosperms. With the published Chlamydomonas as an outgroup, phylogenetic analyses of our new data and available sequences indicate that (1) the Gnetales form a monophyletic group, which is an outgroup to the conifers, (2) the conifers are monophyletic, (3) Taxaceae, Cephalotaxaceae, Cupressaceae, and Taxodiaceae form a monophyletic group, (4) Amentotaxus is closer to Torreya than to Cephalotaxus, suggesting that Amentotaxus is better to be classified as a member of Taxaceae, (5) Phyllocladus, Dacrycarpus, Podocarpus, and Nageia form a monophyletic group, and (6) Pinaceae is an outgroup to the other families of conifers. Our finding that Phyllocladus is a sister group of the Podocarpaceae disagrees with the suggestion that the phylloclade of the genus is an ancient structure and that the genus is a terminal taxon within the Podocarpaceae. The genus Nageia is more closely related to Podocarpus than to Dacrycarpus and was derived from within the Podocarpaceae. In conclusion, our data indicate that in conifers, the uniovulate cone occurred independently in Taxacaeae and Cephalotaxaceae, and in Podocarpaceae after the three families separated from Pinaceae, and support the hypothesis that the uniovulate cone is derived from reduction of a multiovulate cone.Correspondence to: S.-M. The about 31 species of Fosterella L.B. Sm. (Bromeliaceae) are terrestrial herbs with a centre of diversity in the central South American Andes. To resolve infra- and intergeneric relationships among Fosterella and their putative allies, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data from four chloroplast DNA regions (matK gene, rps16 intron, atpB-rbcL and psbB-psbH intergenic spacers). Sequences were generated for 96 accessions corresponding to 60 species from 18 genera. Among these, 57 accessions represented 22 of the 31 recognized Fosterella species and one undescribed morphospecies. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods yielded well-resolved phylogenies. The monophyly of Fosterella was strongly supported, as was its sister relationship with a clade comprising Deuterocohnia, Dyckia and Encholirium. Six distinct evolutionary lineages were distinguished within Fosterella. Character mapping indicated that parallel evolution of identical character states is common in the genus. Relationships between species and lineages are discussed in the context of morphological, ecological and biogeographical data as well as the results of a previous amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) study.
