Based on data from Norwegian streams with sympatric populations of Atlantic salmon and brown trout, it is suggested that temporal segregation is the main mechanism segregating Atlantic salmon and brown trout during spawning. Peak spawning of trout was about 15 days earlier than that of salmon. Physical factors, such as water depth, water velocity and distance from the river banks segregate spawning sites of salmon and trout poorly. Gravel sizes of the redds of salmon and trout were significantly different, though with a considerable overlap, and mean egg depth of salmon and trout were 0.18 and 0.12 m, respectively, probably attributable to the different size of spawners of salmon and trout. None of the temporal or spatial parameters analysed segregate spawners of salmon and trout completely. Species determination of eggs and alevins from the redds showed no interspecific superimposition of redds. It is, therefore, concluded that low survival of hybrids after hatching does not explain the low frequency of hybrids observed in sympatric populations of salmon and trout.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analysis of juvenile salmonids from south-west England revealed the presence of natural hybrids between Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and brown trout, Salmo rrurra L., within three of five rivers. Amongst 409 juvenile 'salmon', 1.2% were hybrids, and of 150 juvenile 'trout' sampled, 2.0% were natural hybrids. In one river, similar hybridization levels in 'salmon' parr samples were found in two successive years. Levels of hybridization are high when compared with most similar studies, especially others within the United Kingdom. Possible factors influencing this are discussed.  相似文献

The frequency of gene flow from Brassica napus L. (canola) to four wild relatives, Brassica rapa L., Raphanus raphanistrum L., Sinapis arvensis L. and Erucastrum gallicum (Willd.) O.E. Schulz, was assessed in greenhouse and/or field experiments, and actual rates measured in commercial fields in Canada. Various marker systems were used to detect hybrid individuals: herbicide resistance traits (HR), green fluorescent protein marker (GFP), species-specific amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and ploidy level. Hybridization between B. rapa and B. napus occurred in two field experiments (frequency approximately 7%) and in wild populations in commercial fields (approximately 13.6%). The higher frequency in commercial fields was most likely due to greater distance between B. rapa plants. All F(1) hybrids were morphologically similar to B. rapa, had B. napus- and B. rapa-specific AFLP markers and were triploid (AAC, 2n=29 chromosomes). They had reduced pollen viability (about 55%) and segregated for both self-incompatible and self-compatible individuals (the latter being a B. napus trait). In contrast, gene flow between R. raphanistrum and B. napus was very rare. A single R. raphanistrum x B. napus F1 hybrid was detected in 32,821 seedlings from the HR B. napus field experiment. The hybrid was morphologically similar to R. raphanistrum except for the presence of valves, a B. napus trait, in the distorted seed pods. It had a genomic structure consistent with the fusion of an unreduced gamete of R. raphanistrum and a reduced gamete of B. napus (RrRrAC, 2n=37), both B. napus- and R. raphanistrum-specific AFLP markers, and had <1% pollen viability. No hybrids were detected in the greenhouse experiments (1,534 seedlings), the GFP field experiment (4,059 seedlings) or in commercial fields in Québec and Alberta (22,114 seedlings). No S. arvensis or E. gallicum x B. napus hybrids were detected (42,828 and 21,841 seedlings, respectively) from commercial fields in Saskatchewan. These findings suggest that the probability of gene flow from transgenic B. napus to R. raphanistrum, S. arvensis or E. gallicum is very low (<2-5 x 10(-5)). However, transgenes can disperse in the environment via wild B. rapa in eastern Canada and possibly via commercial B. rapa volunteers in western Canada.  相似文献

The reproductive biology and gonad cycle of three Cyprinid fish species:Barbus canis (Valenciennes, 1842),B. longiceps (Valenciennes, 1842) andCapoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842), in the upper Jordan River system of Israel were studied by monthly sampling over a two-year period. The reproductive activity of the three species was found to peak from January to April, mostly involving upstream migration towards spawning grounds on river beds 400–900 m above the Jordan River. Hybrids of the three species were collected in nature: in those ofBarbus canis ×Capoeta damascina, the gonads possessed both types of gametes, spermatogonia and oogonia, all of which became arrested at an early stage of development, and infertile; in hybrids of detected in nature, males had oocytes dispersed in the testis, whereas in females, the ovaries had small islets of spermatogonial tissue. In these female hybrids the oocytes ripened normally and spawning occurred.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of poor-cod, Trisoptems minutus L., whiting, Merlangius merlangus L., and Norway pout, Trisoptems esmarkii Nilsson, was studied in western Scottish waters. Sex ratios, size and age at maturation and spawning seasons were determined and compared with other areas. The large juvenile stocks found in inshore areas at the western entrance of the Great Glen were derived from spawning grounds west of Mull, in poor-Cod. In whiting and Norway pout the location of spawning grounds was inferred from the occurrence of planktonic larvae and postlarvae and the hydrography of the area.  相似文献

Migration and spawning behaviour of eight Atlantic salmon adult females were analysed by radio-tracking in relation to the degree of sexual maturity in a spawning tributary of the R. Sélune. Six of them were grilse and four of them were ripe. All the fish migrated upstream until reaching their spawning site at a distance of 4–12 km from the trap. The daily migration rate up to this site was inversely correlated with the length of the female. Spawning occurred in all fish at the same time when the water temperature increased dramatically. Spawning lasted 1–10 days according to the fish. After spawning, females quickly moved downstream only small distances and then stayed in approximately the same location until death. This study concluded that ripeness did not influence behaviour on the spawning migration and describes certain characteristics of the reproductive phase in a spawning tributary.  相似文献

A method using light aircraft to observe spawning activity of Atlantic salmon and brown trout in some Norwegian streams was tested between the years 1981 and 83. From the air, spawning redds of these species appear as light, oval spots in the river bottom. The method was successfully applied to most of the rivers studied, and information about numbers of redds, distribution of redds and spawning times was obtained. However, it has several limitations, the most important being that it proved to be unsuccessful in a deep river with high water turbidity. Also, during periods with high precipitation and high water level, the method cannot be used. Several quantitative and qualitative aspects of the results obtained by this technique are discussed.  相似文献

Smelt were collected from the R. Thames, at Lots Road Power Station, Fulham between October 1989 to June 1990. Smooth, white, ovoid tumours were observed on the fins of smelt during their anadromous spring migration and recognized as a form of spawning papillomatosis. Papillomatous fish constituted about 21% of the population in March and about 19% in April but were not present in any other samples. Up to 13 tumours were found on a single fish. Papilloma prevalence and intensity were both raised in larger fish. Ultrastructural examination revealed that a high proportion of tumour cells contained virus particles with herpesvirus group characteristics. Epithelial cells of fins without tumours revealed no such virus particles. Evidence of the herpesvirus as a likely aetiological agent of spawning papillomatosis is discussed.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation was examined in 209 Atlantic salmon from two river systems, the R. Itchen in Hampshire (Southern England) and the R. Conwy (North Wales). Within each system, five spawning sites were sampled. Four enzymes (AVA II, HAE III, HINF I and MBO I) revealed restriction fragment polymorphisms that were informative. Ten clonal lines were observed. These clones were differentially distributed between the two river systems and single clonal types were found to predominate at several spawning sites. MBO I variants were found in salmon from the R. Itchen but not the R. Conwy. A significant heterogeneity in frequency distribution of clonal lines between parr and smolt assemblages of the same year class within the R. Itchen was detected. This heterogeneity suggests that differences in survival or migratory behaviour may be identified by changes in mtDNA clonal frequencies.  相似文献

The total annual fecundity of mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., during a spawning season is produced by release of discrete batches of eggs. Total fecundity is then the product of the number of batches times the batch fecundity ( F bw). An extensive trawl survey of the Western mackerel stock in the NE Atlantic was undertaken in the 1989 spawning season. Batch fecundity was estimated for 298 fish by counting hydrated eggs in ovaries just prior to ovulation. F bw, expressed as eggs g−1 body weight, varied with latitude: south of 51°N, F bw= 55.49, s.e. = 2.04, n = 227; between 51°N and 55°N, F bw= 45.72, s.e. = 3.41, n = 52 and north of 55° N, F bw= 41.33, s.e. = 5.52, n = 19. It is suggested that as spawning fish migrate northwards the batch size decreases with progress of the spawning season.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the energy metabolism of the burbot (Lota lota, n=38) before, during, and after spawning, which represents the greatest annual metabolic demand for the species. A decrease in body mass, relative weight of the livers, and glycogen concentration of the livers was observed toward the end of spawning. The prespawning period was characterized by high rates of liver glycogenolysis and lipid mobilization. Also, plasma triiodothyronine and sex steroid levels were high before reproduction. During spawning, liver lipolysis was reduced and muscle glycogenolysis stimulated. The levels of triiodothyronine and sex steroids decreased. After reproduction, liver glycogenolysis was suppressed and the rate of gluconeogenesis increased. Thyroid hormone levels were elevated after spawning. Leptin protein and a ghrelin-immunoreactive peptide were detected in burbot plasma. Their concentrations were relatively low before and during reproduction but increased after spawning. The functions of leptin and the ghrelin-immunoreactive peptide in the physiology of the burbot are not consistent with the models of their function in mammals.  相似文献

The gonads of immature female triploid plaice ( Pleuronectes plafcssa ) and plaice × flounder ( Platichthys flesus ) hybrids produced from cold-shocked eggs were examined. They were less than half the size of those in diploids of similar age and contained only small numbers of developing oocytes. These were similar both in size and cytological appearance to those in the controls. The bulk of the ovarian tissue was composed of nests of small undifferentiated cells resembling the oogonia in the ovaries of diploid fish. Mature, 5 year old triploid hybrids which had not produced eggs over the previous two spawning seasons were killed in January when the diploid controls were nearing spawning condition. The ovaries of these fish were smaller than those of the controls and contained degenerating oocytes at maturation stage V. The advantage of sterile female triploid fish for fish-cultivation is discussed.  相似文献

The polymerase chain reaction with arbitrary primers (RAPD-PCR) was used to study and to evaluate the genetic variation in the hybrid progeny of two Cyprinidae species, common bream Abramis brama and roach Rutilus rutilus. Genetic polymorphism was studied in 20 fishes (young of the current year) obtained in four individual crosses: R. rutilus x R. rutilus (RR), A. brama x A. brama (AA), R. rutilus x A. brama (RA), and A. brama x R. rutilus (AR). Amplification spectra obtained with eight primers contained 288 fragments, 97.6% of which proved to be polymorphic. The proportion of polymorphic fragments was 75.0% in the RR progeny, 58.1% in the AA progeny, 84.9% in the AR progeny, and 77.8% in the RA progeny. Classification analysis in the space of principal components was performed with the first four components, which together accounted for 64% of the total variance of the character under study. The individual contributions of components I, II, III, and IV were 26.8, 16.8, 11.5, and 8.9%, respectively. Fishes of the two pure species and the hybrid progeny (direct and reverse hybrids together) were clearly differentiated in the space of principal components I and II. The best differentiation of the four samples (RR, AA, RA, and AR) was observed in the space of principal components II and IV. Possible causes of high genetic variation in interspecific hybrids are discussed.  相似文献

Parts of the Arctic charr population of the subarctic Lake Visjön in north-west Sweden migrate upstream during the spring to two small, recently eutrophied and very productive lakes. Large repeat migrants arrive first, followed by young first-time migrants. Charr in the small lakes grow more rapidly than those resident in L. Visjön. In early September mature fish leave the lakes, followed by immature fish later in September and in October. Overwintering and spawning takes place in L. Visjön. Migratory females attain maturity at age 4 years and resident females at age 6 years. The migrant fish return annually until they are 5–6 years old. This limit may be due to reduced relative growth benefits of the habitat shift for larger individuals. The rapid development of these regular habitat shifts could be explained by an internally fixed exploratory behaviour in these Arctic charr that makes the detection and utilization of distant feeding resources possible. Migrants will possess a considerably higher fitness, if survival rates for migratory and resident fish are equal.  相似文献

The recruitment dynamics and life history of migratory brown trout, Sulmo trutta L., were investigated in a small Baltic coast stream subject to recurring drought. Spawning males consisted of both mature male parr (101–206 mm t.l. ) and migrant males (205–780 mm t.l. ). Spawning females were all migrants which delayed maturity until reaching a significantly greater size on average (424–805 mm t.l. ) than migrant males. Male: female ratios were very high in spawning aggregations (9–12 males: 1 female) with males representing up to five year-classes or more. Gametes from several generations of males per spawning event may be important for maintaining the genetic viability of this population with few female spawners per year. The amount of spawning was dependent on precipitation just prior to and during the spawning period since migrants could not enter the stream under drought conditions. Migrants did not overwinter in the stream.
Drought also caused variable fry mortality following emergence in early summer. Recruitment of 0+ parr in autumn varied from c . 175 to 3000 during 3 years. Smolts were relatively young (ages 1–2) and small (≥8 cm), and were significantly longer on average than sibling parr. Yet emigration of 1-year-olds was not related to 0+ parr size the previous autumn because of overlapping growth rates.
Persistence of the migratory brown trout in this unstable environment may be the consequence of (i) life history adaptation (e.g. short freshwater residence of both juveniles and spawners), and (ii) a complementary set of individual life histories where variation in age of migrant spawners and the occurrence of mature male parr result in a stable spawner population despite inconsistent recruitment of migrants to the sea.  相似文献

The straying of hatchery salmon may harm wild salmon populations through a variety of ecological and genetic mechanisms. Surveys of pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), chum (O. keta) and sockeye (O. nerka) salmon in wild salmon spawning locations in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska since 1997 show a wide range of hatchery straying. The analysis of thermally marked otoliths collected from carcasses indicate that 0–98% of pink salmon, 0–63% of chum salmon and 0–93% of sockeye salmon in spawning areas are hatchery fish, producing an unknown number of hatchery-wild hybrids. Most spawning locations sampled (77%) had hatchery pink salmon from three or more hatcheries, and 51% had annual escapements consisting of more than 10% hatchery pink salmon during at least one of the years surveyed. An exponential decay model of the percentage of hatchery pink salmon strays with distance from hatcheries indicated that streams throughout PWS contain more than 10% hatchery pink salmon. The prevalence of hatchery pink salmon strays in streams increased throughout the spawning season, while the prevalence of hatchery chum salmon decreased. The level of hatchery salmon strays in many areas of PWS are beyond all proposed thresholds (2–10%), which confounds wild salmon escapement goals and may harm the productivity, genetic diversity and fitness of wild salmon in this region  相似文献

In Norwegian folk tradition, Linnaea borealis has a long-standing reputation as a cure for shingles ( Herpes zoster ). Numerous vernacular names reflect this use; the majority are dialectal variations of nårisle or nårislegras , literally: 'corpse rash', 'corpse rash grass'. Both are based on nårisle , the old name for shingles, derived from Norse nár , 'corpse', and risla , 'rash'. In folk medicine, Linnaea was also used to treat other kinds of rash, eczema, hives, measles, ringworms, scabies, water blisters, rheumatism and finger infections. It was applied either internally (as a decoction) or externally (as an ointment, in compresses or by exposing the patient to smoke). The use of L. borealis to treat shingles and skin diseases is almost entirely restricted to Norway. Within Norway, such tradition is widespread throughout the southern parts northwards to Trøndelag. The population of adult cisco in the Bothnian Bay consists of a number of spawning populations. Each one of these returns to the same inshore area for spawning every autumn. In the summer these populations are mixed and occur mainly offshore. These are the main conclusions of an experiment in which cisco were marked with Carlin-type tags. The cisco were caught mainly in fyke nets both in the summer and in the autumn and released after tagging in the area where they had been caught. Fish tagged in the autumn and recaptured in the autumn one or more years later showed a strong affinity to the point of release, while fish from the same group recaptured in the summer had migrated far from the release site. The distribution of cisco that were tagged in the summer and caught in the autumn showed no correlation with the release site.  相似文献

The reproduction of summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (L.), occurring in the Middle Atlantic Bight was studied from 1974–1979. Males dominated the length interval between 21–35 cm t.l. and were essentially absent in samples >55 cm t.l. Females were more abundant in all length intervals >45 cm t.l. Length at maturity ranged from 24–27 cm t.l. for males and from 30–33 cm t.l. for females which coincided with length at age two. Ovarian egg diamerter frequencies indicated summer flounders are serial spawners and the trend in mean and maximum maturity indexes (% ovary weight of total fish weight) indicated spawning began in September and continued through February in 1975 and probably into March in 1976. Annual condition cycle of males peaked in September and was lowest in April while females' cycle reached a maximum in October which coincided with peak spawning time. Fecundity was related to length, weight and ovary weight for 1974–1977 and the length-fecundity equation F = 0.0007975 L 3.402 was found to be the best predictive relationship. The overall reproductive strategy of summer flounder was discussed and apparently tends to maximize reproductive potential through an extended spawning season, early maturation, high fecundity, serial spawning and extensive spawning migrations.  相似文献

Flavonoid analysis of the leaves inBrassica nigra, B. oleracea, B. campestris and their natural amphidiploids, led to the identification of 19 flavonol glycosides, including some acylated ones. These compounds were based on kaempferol, quercetin and isorhamnetin, except forB. oleracea, where no isorhamnetin glycosides were detected. Additive inheritance could normally be shown in the hybrids. Some considerations on the phylogenetic relationships within the group are expressed.  相似文献
