The body shape of a species is associated with its evolutionary history and can reflect behavioural peculiarities related to the ecological niche of each species. Morphology can characterise the morphometric niche of species and can be represented as body shape points within a morphometric universe. This information can be to calculate the morphometric diversity of communities through hypervolume metrics, and the hole sizes that remain in the morphometric hypervolume, which are empty areas with no species. Such holes may be ‘natural’ or caused by a local extinction. In this study, we evaluate the ecological community of dung beetles through the lens of morphometric diversity. We evaluated 38 dung beetle species from 30 subtropical communities in southern Brazil sampled in the summer of 2015, including 15 forest remnant communities from the Atlantic Forest and 15 communities from adjacent maize cultivations. The shape of 495 dung beetle specimens was measured using geometric morphometric and hypervolume techniques to calculate the morphometric diversity and the hole size of each of the 30 communities. We found that the taxonomic diversity positively correlated with the morphometric diversity and negatively correlated with the size of the holes. We also found that forest communities had higher values of morphometric diversity and smaller holes in the hypervolume than the maize cultivation communities, suggesting that local extinction may reduce community body shape spaces.  相似文献

Biological invasions have become major players in the current biodiversity crisis, but realistic tools to predict which species will establish successful populations are still unavailable. Here we present a novel approach that requires only a morphometric characterisation of the species. Using fish invasions of the Mediterranean, we show that the abundance of non‐indigenous fishes correlates with the location and relative size of occupied morphological space within the receiving pool of species. Those invaders that established abundant populations tended to be added outside or at the margins of the receiving morphospace, whereas non‐indigenous species morphologically similar to resident ones failed to develop large populations or even to establish themselves, probably because the available ecological niches were already occupied. Accepting that morphology is a proxy for a species' ecological position in a community, our findings are consistent with ideas advanced since Darwin's naturalisation hypothesis and provide a new warning signal to identify invaders and to recognise vulnerable communities.  相似文献

Sperm head morphometry is a parameter in the evaluation of semen that has been associated with fertility in two ways: comparing morphometric measures between predefined groups of fertility; or analyzing morphometric data by multivariate techniques to identify cell populations. We analyzed the morphometry of ram sperm head by three procedures and checked its relationship with male fertility. A Computer-Aided Sperm Morphometric Assessment procedure (CASMA), an image analysis software (NIS-Elements) in combination with an optical microscope (MO-NIS) and this image analysis software in combination with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-NIS) were used. Eight morphometric parameters were assessed: length, width, area, perimeter, ellipticity, form factor, elongation and regularity. We observed significant differences between the morphometric data of sperm head obtained with three study procedures. The CASMA procedure shows the highest values for all parameters and the SEM-NIS procedure the lowest. The analysis of a semen sample, when only the mean of morphometric parameters is used to describe the cell population, is too limited to interpret their fertilizing capacity. It is essential to analyze the complex structure of the samples by defining subpopulations by multivariate methods. With few exceptions, the means of each morphometric parameter differ between the three subpopulations analyzed in each procedure. Only the subpopulations obtained with the MO-NIS procedure showed a significant correlation with male fertility. In short, it is necessary to establish an instrumental standard for the analysis of sperm morphometry to obtain reliable results and we believe that the MO-NIS system presents these basic requirements.  相似文献

Sinipta dalmani is an Argentine grasshopper whose chromosome polymorphisms have been widely studied through cytogenetic, morphometric, and fitness component analyses. The present work analysed molecular and morphometric variation in seven chromosomally differentiated populations from Entre Rios and Buenos Aires provinces to analyse population structure. Molecular studies were performed studying RAPD loci and morphometric analyses were carried out measuring five morphometric traits. Genetic variability was high in all studied populations and was characterized by a decrease in H as a function of latitude and temperature. Both conventional F(ST) analysis and Bayesian approach for dominant marker showed that there were significant genetic differences among all populations, between provinces, and among populations within provinces. Entre Rios populations showed higher mean numbers of migrants per generation as well as low genetic differentiation and high gene flow with almost all populations whereas Buenos Aires populations may be considered as a result of a more recently colonization. There is considerable morphometric variation between populations and this variation correlates with latitude and temperature. Our results suggest that selection contributes to phenotypic differentiation among populations by moulding the differences in trait means whereas genetic drift is responsible for differences in the matrix of variance-covariance. The gene flow detected is insufficient to prevent phenotypic and chromosome divergences.  相似文献

The use of a computer--based morphometric complex "DIAMORPH" for automated morphometric analysis of renal glomeruli is described. By combining the principles of morphological and functional approaches to diagnosis with the capabilities of present--day research equipment, a new informative morphometric parameter--the extent of capillary--mesangium contact--has been identified. With this parameter and its derivatives, it has been possible to differentiate, in a statistically significant way (p less than 0.01), healthy subjects (controls) from patients with manifest diabetes mellitus of up to I year in duration who could not be distinguished through light microscopic or conventional morphometric studies.  相似文献

几何形态测量方法是生物学研究中用于形态特征分析和形态比较研究的一种常用方法。其核心思想是利用空间坐标点获取研究对象的形态数据,再通过坐标数据的多元统计分析,定量探讨研究对象的形态特征及影响其形态变异的因素。近年来,随着三维扫描技术的广泛应用以及对于石制品形态特征量化分析要求的提高,基于三维模型的几何形态测量方法开始出现在相关的旧石器考古研究中。本文首先对三维几何形态测量分析方法及其在石制品研究中的应用情况进行介绍,随后具体阐述了该方法的分析流程。为便于国内学者更好地了解这一方法,本文进一步以广西百色盆地南坡山遗址发现的手斧为例,利用三维几何形态测量方法对这些手斧的几何形态特征进行了初步探讨。三维几何形态测量方法为石制品形态研究提供了新思路和新视角,有望成为今后中国旧石器考古研究中一个重要的发展方向。  相似文献

A geometric morphometric method has been proposed to test the fluctuating asymmetry and the developmental stability of Betula pendula Roth populations. The main factors affecting the developmental stability were the industrial emission level, the relief altitude, and the interaction of both these factors. A strong correlation between the fluctuating asymmetry indices obtained by the normalizing difference method and geometric morphometric method has been revealed. The fluctuating asymmetry determined by the geometric morphometric method is sensitive to the presence of directional asymmetry, which makes it possible to use this method for precise bioindication mapping of the developmental stability.  相似文献

The stress-strain relationship is determined by the inherent mechanical properties of the intestinal wall, the geometric configurations, the loading conditions and the zero-stress state of the segment. The purpose of this project was to provide morphometric and biomechanical data for rat duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The circumferential strains were referenced to the zero-stress state. Large morphometric variations were found along the small intestine with an increase in the outer circumferential length and luminal area and a decrease in wall thickness in distal direction. The serosal residual strain was tensile and decreased in distal direction (P < 0.05). The mucosal residual strain was compressive and the absolute value decreased in distal direction (P < 0.001). The stress-strain experiments showed that the duodenum was stiffest. All segments were stiffest in longitudinal direction (P < 0.05). In conclusion, axial variation in morphometric and biomechanical properties was found in the small intestine. The zero-stress state must be considered in future biomechanical studies in the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献

MARHOLD, K., 1992. A multivariate morphometric study of the Cardamine amara group (Cruciferae) in the Carpathian and Sudeten mountains. A multivariate morphometric study of the Cardamine amara group based on 55 population samples, collected throughout the Carpathian and Sudeten mountains in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania, is presented. Among the multivariate methods, principal component analysis, cluster analysis, classificatory, canonical and stepwise discriminant analysis were used. The analysis of chromosome numbers from all studied populations showed the same diploid chromosome number: 2n = 16. Together with the results of multivariate morphometric analysis this led to the conclusion that the best way of classifying this group in the area studied was to divide it into two subspecies– Cardamine amara subsp. amara and C. amara subsp. opicii. Tetraploid populations of this group occurring in the Alps require further study.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the value for grading of a previously developed quantitative morphometric/cytometric multivariate grading model (consisting of the mean nuclear area of the 10 largest nuclei (MNA-10, mitotic activity index = MAI and Ki-67 area% = Ki-67) in two new independent test sets of urothelial carcinomas (UCs) of the urinary bladder and to evaluate the additional value of p53 area% (p53) in this model. STUDY DESIGN: Ki-67 immunoquantitation, morphometric MAI and MNA-10 assessments using a previously described, strict protocol and matching of the resulting morphometric grade with subjective grade in two test sets of 154 T(A,1) UCs of the bladder (consensus grade between two independent observers). Further testing of this morphometric grading model was performed in 57 cases that lacked initial interobserver agreement on grade. Single and multivariate analysis of all features (including p53) was performed. RESULTS: With the previously developed morphometric/cytometric grading model, 93% (grade 1 vs. 2) and 91% (grade 2 vs. 3) of the consensus cases were correctly classified. These percentages were very similar to previous results, suggesting that the model is robust. Of the 57 cases that lacked initial interobserver agreement on grade, 53/57 (93%) were classified unambiguously as grade 1, 2 or 3 with the quantitative morphometric/ cytometric grading model. In the exploratory analysis, p53 was significant but with more overlap than the other features had. In multivariate analysis p53 did not improve the overall classification result of the original morphometric/cytometric model. CONCLUSION: The value of MNA-10, MAI and Ki-67 for grading in T(A,1) urothelial carcinomas of the urinary bladder was confirmed. p53 Did not improve overall grading classification of this combination.  相似文献

Morphologic and morphometric sperm characteristics of mouse epididymal extracts from animals exposed to static magnetic fields were evaluated. For this purpose, animals were exposed for 35 days to a field of 0.7 T generated by a commercial permanent magnet for either 1 or 24 h per day. The values of morphometric parameters were obtained using the morphometric module of the Sperm Class Analyzer® computerized image analysis system, and percentages of abnormalities were calculated. The size of sperm heads was unaffected by exposure to static magnetic fields. Lack of hook was a sperm head abnormality found significantly more frequently in animals exposed continually than in nonexposed animals, showing a possible alteration to the spermatogenic process after exposure to static magnetic fields. Non-geographic morphometric variation, particularly at the level of sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic (age-related) variation, has been documented in rodents, and useful for establishing whether to analyse sexes separately or together, and for selecting adult specimens for subsequent data recording and analysis. However, such studies have largely been based on traditional morphometric analyses of linear measurements that mainly focus on overall size, rather than shape-related morphometric variation. Unit-free, landmark/outline-based geometric morphometric analyses are considered to offer a more appropriate tool for assessing shape-related morphometric variation. In this study, we used geometric cranial morphometric analysis to assess the nature and extent of sexual dimorphism and age variation within the Tete veld rat, Aethomys ineptus (Thomas and Wroughton, 1908) from southern Africa and the African Nile rat, Arvicanthis niloticus (Desmarest, 1822) from Sudan. The results obtained were in turn compared with previously published results based on independent geometric and traditional cranial morphometric data from the same sampled populations examined in the present study. While our geometric morphometric results detected statistically significant sexual dimorphism in cranial shape within Ar. niloticus only, previously published results based on traditional morphometric data failed to detect significant sexual dimorphism within this species. However, similar to previously published traditional morphometric data, our geometric morphometric results detected statistically significant age-related variation in cranial shape and size within both Ae. ineptus and Ar. niloticus, with individuals of age classes 5 and 6 being considered to represent adult specimens. Our results highlight the importance of carefully evaluating both size- and shape-related non-geographic morphometric variation prior to the analysis of geographic variation and the delineation of species. Erroneous conclusions of non-geographic variation may have implications in the interpretation of geographic and evolutionary processes that may be responsible for morphological differences at both the inter- and intra-specific levels.  相似文献

A quantitative approach to the nuclear ultrastructure of cerebellar granule cells is described here. The study was made using conventional electron microscopy from cerebellar cortices of adult rats by means of a semiautomatic image analyzer. The basic observation is that the nuclei of mature granule cells constitute a homogeneous population in terms of morphometric and stereologic data; in fact, the volume density of condensed chromatin within the nuclei remains practically constant in all nuclear sections. These results seem to indicate the existence of a cell-specific nuclear morphometric phenotype which might be considered as an effective criterion for the typification of this cellular lineage.  相似文献

Human cancellous bone is a heterogeneous material. Despite this, most of the published studies report correlations between mechanical properties and morphometric parameters averaged on the whole specimen. This work investigated whether local variations in morphometric parameters were linked to the localized failure regions of cancellous bone. Additionally, it was examined whether local values of morphometric parameters can predict the ultimate stress better than the average bone volume fraction (BV/TV). Cylindrical cancellous bone specimens extracted along the primary compressive group of human femoral heads were studied. These were microCT-imaged to assess the morphometric parameters, compressed to determine the ultimate stress, and rescanned by microCT to visualize the failure region. Failure involved slightly less than half of the free height of the specimens. Significant differences were found in the morphometric parameters calculated in the failure and in the non-failure regions. The cross-sections containing minimum BV/TV values were those most often located inside the failure region (83%, p<0.001). Regression analysis confirmed that variations in BV/TV best describe variations in ultimate stress (R2=0.84) out of the averaged morphometric parameters. The prediction of ultimate stress increased when minimum or maximum values of the morphometric parameters were taken, with the highest prediction found by considering the minimum BV/TV (R2=0.95). In conclusion, due to the heterogeneity of cancellous bone, there may exist regions characterized by a different microarchitecture, where the bone is weaker and consequently is more likely to fail. These regions mostly contain minimum values in BV/TV, which were found to predict ultimate stress better than average BV/TV.  相似文献

For the quantitative characteristics of the morphology of two groups of spinal cord neurons in the cherry salmon at the early stages of ontogenesis, the fractal dimension and some more traditional morphometric indices, such as the total length of neuronal branches, the number of terminal branches and branchpoints, and the cell area, are determined. The values of the morphometric indices and the fractal dimension of the bivariate neuronal pattern are shown to increase in the course of ontogenesis from the first to the second year of fish life. The correlation between the main morphometric value and the fractal dimension is found, and their correspondence to the morphometric modifications of the dendrite tree in the neurons investigated during ontogenesis is detected.  相似文献

This paper introduces a new technique in the investigation of object classification and illustrates the potential use of this technique for the analysis of a range of biological data, using avian morphometric data as an example. The nascent variable precision rough sets (VPRS) model is introduced and compared with the decision tree method ID3 (through a ‘leave n out’ approach), using the same dataset of morphometric measures of European barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) and assessing the accuracy of gender classification based on these measures. The results demonstrate that the VPRS model, allied with the use of a modern method of discretization of data, is comparable with the more traditional non-parametric ID3 decision tree method. We show that, particularly in small samples, the VPRS model can improve classification and to a lesser extent prediction aspects over ID3. Furthermore, through the ‘leave n out’ approach, some indication can be produced of the relative importance of the different morphometric measures used in this problem. In this case we suggest that VPRS has advantages over ID3, as it intelligently uses more of the morphometric data available for the data classification, whilst placing less emphasis on variables with low reliability. In biological terms, the results suggest that the gender of swallows can be determined with reasonable accuracy from morphometric data and highlight the most important variables in this process. We suggest that both analysis techniques are potentially useful for the analysis of a range of different types of biological datasets, and that VPRS in particular has potential for application to a range of biological circumstances.  相似文献

A light microscopy morphometric study was performed in singly innervated synaptic areas of the triangularis sterni muscle of the normal adult Swiss mouse. Investigating mechanisms of the motor nerve growth control, we tested the hypothesis that significant differences in the nerve terminal branching pattern can be detected between different populations of nerve endings classified according to their arborization complexity or size. The main observations of this morphometric study are first, that the mean segment length of the terminal arborization between branch points behaves as an independent variable from the remaining parameters; the mean value of this parameter did not change in nerve endings of differing size and complexity. Secondly, the increase in size of the nerve endings is accompanied by a significant reduction in the mean length of the distal free-end segments. Results are discussed in the context of the possible regulatory mechanisms governing nerve terminal growth and remodelling.  相似文献

Taxonomic identification of fossils based on morphometric data traditionally relies on the use of standard linear models to classify such data. Machine learning and decision trees offer powerful alternative approaches to this problem but are not widely used in palaeontology. Here, we apply these techniques to published morphometric data of isolated theropod teeth in order to explore their utility in tackling taxonomic problems. We chose two published datasets consisting of 886 teeth from 14 taxa and 3020 teeth from 17 taxa, respectively, each with five morphometric variables per tooth. We also explored the effects that missing data have on the final classification accuracy. Our results suggest that machine learning and decision trees yield superior classification results over a wide range of data permutations, with decision trees achieving accuracies of 96% in classifying test data in some cases. Missing data or attempts to generate synthetic data to overcome missing data seriously degrade all classifiers predictive accuracy. The results of our analyses also indicate that using ensemble classifiers combining different classification techniques and the examination of posterior probabilities is a useful aid in checking final class assignments. The application of such techniques to isolated theropod teeth demonstrate that simple morphometric data can be used to yield statistically robust taxonomic classifications and that lower classification accuracy is more likely to reflect preservational limitations of the data or poor application of the methods.  相似文献
