Bonefish (Albula vulpes L.) are a highly prized sport fish. Despite their economic importance, populations in the Florida Keys and Caribbean are in decline, with the early life history undescribed. Injections of carp pituitary extract into A. vulpes during the advanced stages of ovarian development induced ovulation and spawning. Embryos were sampled hourly until hatching into undeveloped, yolk-sac leptocephalus larvae. These larvae survived 56 h post-hatch, when myomeres and eyes were developing but not the mouth. These results inform future research on the reproduction and early life history of A. vulpes.  相似文献

Synopsis Energy use and changes in whole-body content of lipid, protein, nitrogen, carbohydrate and ash were followed during metamorphosis of leptocephalous larvae of the bonefish (Albula). During metamorphosis, which requires about 8–12 days, larvae lost about 3–4 mg of lipid, or about 50% of the total lipid content. Lipid levels, calculated on a dry weight basis, showed no discernible trends, with values ranging from 138–185 mg (g dry wt)–1. Protein content was 8.4 mg per larva and showed no significant change. However, protein levels increased from 147 to 329 mg (g dry wt)–1. Nitrogen content decreased slightly from about 3.5 to 3.2 mg per larva. A comparison of protein and nitrogen values, expressed as % dry weight, showed that, in larvae which were just beginning to metamorphose, 70% of the total nitrogen was non-protein nitrogen (NPN). The NPN decreased to 58% of the total nitrogen towards the end of metamorphosis. Carbohydrate content fell from about 3.5 to 0.6 mg per larva, which represents an 83% loss. Carbohydrate levels also fell from about 81 to 32 mg (g dry wt)–1. In addition, most of the carbohydrate appears to be bound to protein. Ash content decreased by 52%, from 4.6 to 2.2 mg per larva. Caloric content fell slightly from about 182 to 141 calories per larva whereas caloric density showed no discernible trends, with values ranging from 4.180 to 4.725 kcal (g dry wt)–1. These results indicate that metamorphosing leptocephali, which apparently do not feed, probably derive most of their energy requirements from metabolizing endogenous lipid and carbohydrate stores formed during the premetamorphic interval.  相似文献

1. The concentration and composition of seston were measured in the east basin of Lake Erie (U.S.A.–Canada) to determine whether the classical patterns of nearshore versus offshore zonation considered typical of large lakes have been altered by decades of change in nutrient loading and food web structure, and to test the possibility that food quality for seston consumers, as reflected in nutrient and lipid composition, may currently be diminished. Chlorophyll‐a (chl‐a), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate P, total lipid (TL), lipid classes, fatty acids and major phytoplankton groups were compared between the nearshore (<20 m) and offshore zones in spring and early summer. 2. Particulate organic carbon, chl‐a and TL concentrations were lower nearshore than offshore, which is a reversal of the classical large lake pattern but consistent with other evidence from the Great Lakes that colonization by filter‐feeding dreissenid mussels can cause seston depletion in relatively shallow waters. 3. Terrestrial and bacterial fatty acid markers were slightly higher in the nearshore than the offshore, but there was little difference in nutrient, taxonomic or biochemical composition between zones otherwise. This shows a small differential influence of terrestrial and detrital inputs, and a slight shift away from phytoplankton dominance of seston composition in the nearshore, but little difference in potential food quality of seston. 4. Microscope counts, phytoplankton fluorescence, and fatty acid composition indicated succession from diatom dominance in May to dominance by cryptophyte and chromophyte flagellates in June and July. Depletion of dissolved P and Si, increased contribution of storage lipids, and changes in fatty acid composition suggested a mild degree of nutrient deficiency during this spring to summer transition. 5. Total lipids were dominated by classes typical of pigments and membranes with only moderate amounts of neutral (storage) lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were abundant (especially the long chain ω‐3 acids) and the POC : chl‐a and POC : particulate P ratios indicated P sufficiency or slight P‐deficiency. Despite concerns that some important consumers in the Great Lakes food web may be suffering from diminished food quality, these results point to a generally high seston food quality even with highly abundant mussels and incipient P deficiency in the east basin of Lake Erie.  相似文献

Larvae of the three important Central American malaria vectors, Anopheles albimanus, An. vestitipennis, and An. darlingi, are found in distinctly different habitats broadly defined by hydrology and aquatic vegetation, but little is known about the actual food quality and quantity of these habitats. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are of special interest, because mosquitoes require 20:5ω3 (EPA), 20:4ω6 (ARA), and 22:6ω3 (DHA) and without an adequate supply of these PUFAs they are not able to complete their life cycle. We collected samples of larvae and their corresponding habitats and analyzed their fatty acid (FA) composition to reveal if there are any species‐specific and habitat‐specific differences in FA composition, and if habitat FA differences can be linked to differences in the mosquito FA pattern and, ultimately, mosquito performance. We also assessed how FA of wild larvae compare to the laboratory‐reared larvae. Habitats were generally low in essential PUFAs and there were no significant differences among the FA composition of habitat samples. There were significant differences in FA composition of larvae. An. darlingi contained significantly higher amounts of FA, specifically a higher content of ω‐6 PUFA, represented mainly by the linoleic acid (18:2ω‐6). Large differences were found between field‐collected and laboratory‐reared An. vestitipennis larvae, especially in the content of PUFAs. The laboratory‐reared larvae contained significantly more of the total FA, ω3 PUFA, and MUFA. The laboratory‐reared larvae contained three to five times more essential PUFAs, EPA, and DHA. However, there were no differences in the total dry weight of the 4th instar larvae between the wild vs laboratory‐reared larvae. Total FA in both larvae and habitats of An. albimanus and An. darlingi were positively correlated with the concentration of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC, PON) in their respective habitats, but no such correlation was found for An. vestitipennis. PUFA are a good indicator of nutritional quality, although factors controlling the success of anopheline development from larval habitats are likely to be more complex and would include the presence of predators, pathogens, and toxins as interacting factors.  相似文献

The effects of sucrose and amino acid (aa) composition and concentration in meridic larval diets (e.g., partially defined at the chemical level) was examined on several parameters of Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) development. Lipid and protein levels of pupating larvae and emerging adults were examined. Different sucrose concentrations in the diet had small effects upon most of the development parameters. However, sucrose concentration significantly affected the ability of larvae to accumulate lipid reserves and proteins. Adults emerging from the different sucrose diets did not significantly differ in their lipid contents and protein loads. Specific deletions of aa from the diet, and general aa concentration, had a strong effect upon the parameters of development and pupating larvae lipids and proteins. Glycine-deletion was the most deleterious, followed by the deletion of all non-essential aa, and serine. High aa concentration in the diet has a detrimental effect upon development. Lipid contents in pupating larvae, and to some extent protein levels, were affected by aa manipulations in the diet. Lipid and protein loads in emerging adults were not significantly affected by aa manipulations. Based on the analysis of lipid frequency distribution it is suggested that the Medfly seems to regulate the level of lipid content in emerging adults within a certain range, regardless of the larval diet history or lipid contents. Proteins do not seem to be regulated as are lipids. These results point to an interesting and unexpected metabolic regulation of energetic resources during metamorphosis of the Medfly.  相似文献

The total ash, chlorophyll, phaeopigment, lipid and fatty acid contents of three microalgae (the diatomsChaetoceros calcitrans, Skeletonema costatum and the prymnesiophyteIsochrysis galbana) used in tropical Malaysian penaeid mariculture were studied. The axenic laboratory cultures were grown in f-2 medium, while outdoor cultures were grown in a commercial medium designed for optimum nutrition in tropical outdoor aquaculture operations. Considerable amounts (3–9% of the total fatty acid) of the polyunsaturated fatty acid 20:5w3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) were present in the diatoms; very small amounts were also found inI. galbana. Lipid contents were three to five times higher than chlorophylla. There was an increase with culture age in the relative proportion of total C18 and C20 fatty acid components. The algae contained the w3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) necessary for the growth and survival rate of the prawn larvae. However, onlyChaetoceros calcitrans grew well under the conditions of temperature and salinity in the hatchery.  相似文献

种内竞争是实蝇的重要生态学特性。本文研究比较了近缘种桔小实蝇Bactrocera dorsalis(Hendel)和番石榴实蝇B.correcta(Bezzi)在幼虫人工饲料中种内竞争的密度效应。研究结果显示,桔小实蝇和番石榴实蝇都有密度过低效应,均表现出发育历期较长、蛹较轻和成活率较低;结合蛹重和成活率两个重要参数指标,明确了桔小实蝇和番石榴实蝇的最宜密度均在5-20头虫/10 g饲料;不同生长参数之间的变化均有一定的正负相关性。当种群密度超过最宜密度,桔小实蝇和番石榴实蝇均有明显的种内竞争现象,随着种群密度的升高,种内竞争越激烈。其主要表现为化蛹率和羽化率不断下降、幼虫历期逐渐缩短、蛹历期不断延长和蛹逐渐变小;当100头虫/10 g饲料时,桔小实蝇和番石榴实蝇成活率从86.00%±4.2688%和86.00%±4.1096%分别下降到60.08%±2.5166%和76.33%±2.2333%。桔小实蝇和番石榴实蝇的种内竞争的密度效应极具相似性,推测这两种实蝇有类似的种群调节机制,但番石榴实蝇的幼虫比桔小实蝇的拥有更强的抗拥挤能力。  相似文献

Wound healing is a dynamic process comprising multiple events, such as inflammation, re-epithelialization, and tissue remodeling. Re-epithelialization phase is characterized by the engagement of several cell populations, mainly of keratinocytes that sequentially go through cycles of migration, proliferation, and differentiation to restore skin functions. Troubles can arise during the re-epithelialization phase of skin wound healing particularly in keratinocyte migration, resulting in chronic non-healing lesions, which represent a serious clinical problem. Over the last decades, the efforts aimed to find new pharmacological approaches for wound care were made, yet almost all current therapeutic strategies used remain inadequate or even ineffective. As such, it is crucial to identify new drugs that can enable a proper regeneration of the epithelium in wounded skin. Here, we have investigated the effects of the fibrinolytic drug mesoglycan, a glycosaminoglycans mixture derived from porcine intestinal mucosa on HaCaT human keratinocytes that were used as in vitro experimental model of skin re-epithelialization. We found that mesoglycan induces keratinocyte migration and early differentiation by triggering the syndecan-4/PKCα pathway and that these effects were at least in part, because of the formation of the annexin A1/S100A11 complex. Our data suggest that mesoglycan may be useful as a new pro-healing drug for skin wound care.  相似文献

Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), maintained on baker's yeast, were fed for 24h upon two algal diets, Isochrysis galbana (diet A) and Isochrysis galbana + Nannochloropsis gaditana (diet B). (These algal diets were selected for their potential use as essential fatty acid (EFA) boosters, taking into account the requirements of fish larvae). The effect of these algal diets on total lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition was studied. The total lipid content increased after feeding upon both diets but no significant differences were found between the two types. Neutral lipid and polar lipid contents increased and a positive correlation was observed between the neutral lipids content of rotifers and that of the food supplied. However, the content of polar lipids in rotifers did not depend upon that of the diet. The increase in neutral lipid content was found to be higher in rotifers fed upon diet B, compared to diet A which increased the phospholipid content. Non-enriched rotifers contained only small amounts of polyenoic fatty acids, i.e. 18:3n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, the contents of which increased significantly by feeding both diets. The EFA composition (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) of neutral lipids and phopholipids in rotifers reflected the EFA composition of each diet. Diet B-fed rotifers had the highest content in 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3, whereas rotifers fed diet A and the highest 22:6n-3 content. The mixed diet I. galbana + N. gaditana enhanced substantially the composition of lipid classes i.e. neutral lipids and of n-3 PUFA of rotifers in comparison with Isochrysis or yeast diets.  相似文献

Changes in egg volume, water content, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and fatty acids in cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta) were determined during embryogenesis to understand the nutritional requirements in the early life phase. The egg volume and the water content decreased significantly (P<0.05) during early embryonic development, and then increased abruptly after the beginning of organ differentiation. During embryonic development, protein was the major content in the yolk and the per cent composition varied to a large extent (55.19–78.45%) with carbohydrates (9.86–15.56%) and lipids (1.62–2.97%). Proteins and lipids decreased 23.3% and 0.4%, respectively, in dry weight, while carbohydrates increased 0.46%. Total amino acids and essential amino acids (EAAs) were stable during the early embryonic developmental stage, but decreased significantly until the eggs hatched (P<0.05). The largest utilisation of the yolk protein possibly occurred with respect to EAAs (25.7%) because of a decrease in methionine (70.3%), valine (63.0%) and phenylalanine (58.5%). The most important fatty acids were saturated fatty acid (SFA) C16:0 and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) C22:6 and C20:5. Unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) and SFA decreased at a similar rate during embryonic development (5.69% and 6.15%, respectively). For UFAs, monounsaturated fatty acids were consumed at a greater rate than PUFAs (29.6% and 0.05%, respectively).  相似文献

Niger seeds (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.), which are of interest as a new source of vegetable oils, were subjected to Soxhlet-extraction with n-hexane and the extract analysed using a combination of CC, GC, TLC and normal-phase HPLC. The total lipid content was ca. 300 mg/g seed material, and the fatty acid profile showed a high content of linoleic acid (up to 63%) together with palmitic acid (17%), oleic acid (ca. 11%), and stearic acid (ca. 7%). CC separation over silica gel eluted with solvents of increasing polarity yielded 291 mg/g of neutral lipids, 5.76 mg/g of glycolipids, and 0.84 mg/g of phospholipids. GC analysis showed that the major fatty acid present in all lipid classes was linoleic acid together with minor amounts of palmitic, oleic and stearic acids. Polar lipid fractions, however, were characterised by higher levels of palmitic acid and a lower content of linoleic acid. Phospholipid classes separated by normal-phase HPLC consisted of phosphatidylcholine (ca. 49%), phosphatidylethanolamine (22%), phosphatidylinositol (14%), phosphatidylserine (ca. 8%), and minor amounts (2-3%) of phosphatidylglycerol and lysophosphatidylcholine.  相似文献

This article summarizes the current knowledge available on metabolism and the biological effects of n-3 docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). n-3 DPA has not been extensively studied because of the limited availability of the pure compound. n-3 DPA is an elongated metabolite of EPA and is an intermediary product between EPA and DHA. The literature on n-3 DPA is limited, however the available data suggests it has beneficial health effects. In vitro n-3 DPA is retro-converted back to EPA, however it does not appear to be readily metabolised to DHA. In vivo studies have shown limited conversion of n-3 DPA to DHA, mainly in liver, but in addition retro-conversion to EPA is evident in a number of tissues. n-3 DPA can be metabolised by lipoxygenase, in platelets, to form ll-hydroxy-7,9,13,16,19- and 14-hydroxy-7,10,12,16,19-DPA. It has also been reported that n-3 DPA is effective (more so than EPA and DHA) in inhibition of aggregation in platelets obtained from rabbit blood. In addition, there is evidence that n-3 DPA possesses 10-fold greater endothelial cell migration ability than EPA, which is important in wound-healing processes. An in vivo study has reported that n-3 DPA reduces the fatty acid synthase and malic enzyme activity levels in n-3 DPA-supplemented mice and these effects were stronger than the EPA-supplemented mice. Another recent in vivo study has reported that n-3 DPA may have a role in attenuating age-related decrease in spatial learning and long-term potentiation. However, more research remains to be done to further investigate the biological effects of this n-3 VLCPUFA.  相似文献

We herein provide the first observations on planulation, larval development, and metamorphosis of Siderastrea stellata, an endemic reef-building species that occurs along the northeastern and southeastern coasts of Brazil. The release and settlement of larvae were observed in two distinct periods. The first started 3 days after collection on January 28 during the last quarter, whereas the second started 2 months later, on April 10 during the change from new moon to the first quarter. Planulation continued throughout approximately 48 h. Brooded larvae released from the mouth contained zooxanthellae, and underwent settlement after 48 h. Newly extruded larvae stayed in close contact with parental polyps. Fusion was observed among larvae from the same colony. The first septal cycle was formed by day 2–3, while the third cycle of exosepta became evident 15 days after protosepta development. The development of the corallite of primary polyp was slow, and after 9 months of analyses no evidence of budding was obtained, this indicating that colonial development is likely to be a late event in the S. stellata life history.  相似文献

This review provides the alternative routes towards the valorization of dark H2 fermentation effluents that are mainly rich in volatile fatty acids such as acetate and butyrate. Various enhancement and alternative routes such as photo fermentation, anaerobic digestion, utilization of microbial electrochemical systems, and algal system towards the generation of bioenergy and electricity and also for efficient organic matter utilization are highlighted. What is more, various integration schemes and two-stage fermentation for the possible scale up are reviewed. Moreover, recent progress for enhanced performance towards waste stabilization and overall utilization of useful and higher COD present in the organic source into value-added products are extensively discussed.  相似文献

Chemical composition and lipid biosynthesis were studied in the marine eustigmatophyte Nannochloropsis sp. Grown under a 12:12 h light-dark regime. Cellular division occurred in the dark and was associated with a reduction in cell volume. The cellular content of chlorophyll a and carotenoids increased during the light period and decreased during the dark period. Other cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, followed a similar pattern. Nannochloropsis sp. Incorporated acetate, mostly into lipids during the light period, whereas a low rate of acetate incorporation was observed during the dark period, mostly into nonlipid compounds. Neutral lipids such as triacylglycerol were synthesized and accumulated in the light and showed a rapid turnover in the dark. Polar structural lipids such as monogalactosyl diacylglycerol were synthesized during the light period and hardly turned over during the dark period. Changes in lipid content were associated with variations in cellular fatty acid composition. The light period was characterized by an increase in the percentage of C16:0 and 16:1 fatty acids associated with triacylglycerols. However, in the dark period, as triglycerides were consumed for cellular maintenance, the relative distribution of the C20:5 fatty acid associated with the galactolipids increased.  相似文献

Maggots have become highly successful in the treatment of non‐healing wounds and multidrug‐resistant pathogen infections. The main objective of this study was to extract antibacterial substances from larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. To induce immune responses, we septically injured the larvae with a contaminated needle. Lyophilized H. illucens larvae were homogenized and extracted with acidic methanol. We examined the antifungal and antibacterial effects of the low molecular weight antimicrobial factors within the larval extract on the growth of a broad range of microorganisms, including Gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Gram‐negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, we isolated the anti‐MRSA substances from the larval extract using high performance liquid chromatography. These investigations revealed that the larval extract possessed a broad‐spectrum of antibacterial activity, demonstrating that secretions of H. illucens larvae prove useful in the fight against MRSA and can potentially be a source of novel antibiotic‐like compounds for infection control.  相似文献

Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). We studied fatty acid (FA) composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations (Diptera: Culicidae), that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short‐chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14:2n‐6 and 14:3n‐3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized (or retroconverted) by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n‐3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred.  相似文献
