The dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus) is an important teleost harvested by recreational and commercial fishers throughout its endemic distribution along eastern Australia. This study indicates that the species has an extended spawning period throughout the austral summer, with females in spawning condition occurring in lower estuarine and coastal waters. Total length (L50) and age (A50) at which 50% (±1 SE) of the population was mature was 31.72 (±1.08) cm TL and 1.22 (±0.44) years for males and 56.75 (±0.60) cm TL and 4.55 (±0.13) years for females. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters differed significantly between sexes; females grew faster and attained a greater maximum TL and age than males. The largest female was 98.5 cm TL (7.5 kg), and the oldest 16 years, whereas the largest male was 61.5 cm TL (1.58 kg) and 11 years of age. A tag‐and‐release study identified the exchange of sub‐adult and mature‐sized individuals among estuaries. Determinations of length‐based management regulations for the species are compounded by the large gender‐based differences in growth and length‐at‐maturity. Current minimum legal lengths of 30–40 cm TL protect approximately 3–9% of the female spawning population. Alternative management options, including harvest slot sizes, need to be investigated and tested.  相似文献

Large‐bodied fish are critical for sustaining coral reef fisheries, but little is known about the vulnerability of these fish to global warming. This study examined the effects of elevated temperatures on the movement and activity patterns of the common coral trout Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae), which is an important fishery species in tropical Australia and throughout the Indo West‐Pacific. Adult fish were collected from two locations on Australia's Great Barrier Reef (23°S and 14°S) and maintained at one of four temperatures (24, 27, 30, 33 °C). Following >4 weeks acclimation, the spontaneous swimming speeds and activity patterns of individuals were recorded over a period of 12 days. At 24–27 °C, spontaneous swimming speeds of common coral trout were 0.43–0.45 body lengths per second (bls?1), but dropped sharply to 0.29 bls?1 at 30 °C and 0.25 bls?1 at 33 °C. Concurrently, individuals spent 9.3–10.6% of their time resting motionless on the bottom at 24–27 °C, but this behaviour increased to 14.0% at 30 °C and 20.0% of the time at 33 °C (mean ± SE). The impact of temperature was greatest for smaller individuals (<45 cm TL), showing significant changes to swimming speeds across every temperature tested, while medium (45–55 cm TL) and large individuals (>55 cm TL) were first affected by 30 °C and 33 °C, respectively. Importantly, there was some indication that populations can adapt to elevated temperature if presented with adequate time, as the high‐latitude population decreased significantly in swimming speeds at both 30 °C and 33 °C, while the low‐latitude population only showed significant reductions at 33 °C. Given that movement and activity patterns of large mobile species are directly related to prey encounter rates, ability to capture prey and avoid predators, any reductions in activity patterns are likely to reduce overall foraging and energy intake, limit the energy available for growth and reproduction, and affect the fitness and survival of individuals and populations.  相似文献

The reliability of the lactate threshold (LT) determined in aged rats and its validity to identify an exercise intensity corresponding to the maximal blood lactate steady state (MLSS) were analyzed. Eighteen male aged Wistar rats (~365 days) were submitted to two incremental swimming tests until exhaustion, consisting of an initial load corresponding to 1% of body mass (BM) and increments of 1% BM at each 3‐min with blood lactate ([lac]) measurements. The LT was determined by visual inspection (LTV) as well by applying a polynomial function on the [lac]/workload ratio (LTP) by considering the vertices of the curve. For the MLSS, twelve animals were submitted, on different days, to 3–4 exercise sessions of 30‐min with workload corresponding to 4, 5 or 6% BM. The MLSS was considered the highest exercise intensity at which the [lac] variation was not higher than 0.07 mM.min?1 during the last 20‐min. No differences were observed for the test‐retest results (4.9 ± 0.7 and 5.0 ± 0.8 %BM for LTv; and 6.0 ± 0.6 and 5.8 ± 0.6 %BM for LTp) that did not differ from the MLSS (5.4 ± 0.5 %BM). The LT identified for aged rats in swimming, both by visual inspection and polynomial function, was reliable and did not differ from the MLSS. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Lordosis in fish is an abnormal ventral curvature of the vertebral column, accompanied by abnormal calcification of the afflicted vertebrae. Incidences of lordosis are a major problem in aquaculture and often correlate with increased swimming activity. To understand the biomechanical causes and consequences of lordosis, we mapped the morphological changes that occur in the vertebrae of European sea bass during their development from larva to juvenile. Our micro-CT analysis of lordotic and non-lordotic vertebrae revealed significant differences in their micro-architecture. Lordotic vertebrae have a larger bone volume, flattened dorsal zygapophyses and extra lateral ridges. They also have a larger second moment of area (both lateral and dorso-ventral) than non-lordotic vertebrae. This morphology suggests lordotic vertebrae to be adapted to an increased bending moment, caused by the axial musculature during increased swimming activity. We hypothesize the increase in swimming activity to have a two-fold effect in animals that become lordotic. The first effect is buckling failure of the axial skeleton due to an increased compressive load. The second effect is extra bone deposition as an adaptive response of the vertebrae at the cellular level, caused by an increased strain and strain rate in these vertebrae. Lordosis thus comprises both a buckling failure of the vertebral column and a molecular response that adapts the lordotic vertebrae to a new loading regime.  相似文献

The early development of the postcranial skeleton (pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, vertebral column and fins) in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca (L.)) was studied from hatching to days 47 and 43 post fertilization (dpf) at two different rearing temperatures, 15.5 and 18.0°C. Four embryonic and six larval stages were described, ranging from 3.4 ± 0.3 mm to 21.8 ± 2.1 mm in total length. The crucial point in larval development is swimbladder inflation, which enables larvae to swim energy efficiently. Until this time point, only the most essential skeletal elements to enable swimming movements have developed. As the larvae become neutrally buoyant, they grow and differentiate postcranial elements rapidly. Concurrently, swimming performance and foraging success seems to improve. A specific size is correlated with a distinct developmental stage defined by a set of traits that includes the skeletal elements. The developmental sequence of skeletal structures is temperature independent, although growth is slower and the individual developmental stages are reached later at 15.5°C than at 18.0°C. J. It is widely known that water temperature affects the swimming capacity of fish. But the effect of the rearing temperature on the swimming ability of the fish at later stages, has not had similar attention. In this study, four populations of zebrafish, were reared in different water temperatures (22, 25, 28 and 31°C) and after being acclimatized in a common temperature (26.5°C) for over a month, they were subjected to swimming trials in order to evaluate the maximum relative critical velocity (RU crit ) in each case. Fish that were reared in 22°C showed statistically significant lower performance than the ones reared in 31°C (7.72 ± 0.17 vs. 8.79 ± 0.28, means ± S.E.). Possible explanations for the observed differentiation could be the effect of early life temperature on fish muscle ontogeny or on body shape.  相似文献

Mediterranean amberjack Seriola dumerili (Risso 1810) has aquaculture potential. The growth rate and food conversion ratio of S. dumerili on three different types of food (A: 100% frozen sardines; B: 50% frozen sardines and 50% pellet; C: 100% pellet) were measured, and analysed with respect to temperature, condition index and chemical composition of the fish fillet. Wild S. dumerili, average body weight 248 g and average total length 26.9 cm were caught in August and September 1994 in the South Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik, Croatia and kept in three tanks (n=15 in each tank; duration of experiment, 226 days). The fish that were fed on diet A [initial weight, 252 ± 71 g; total length (TL), 24.3 ± 2.6 cm] started feeding immediately; however, fish assigned to diet C began to feed entirely on the pelleted diet 1 month after the start of the experiment. The mortality of fish fed on diet A was negligible, the registered growth rate was 313 ± 74 g (124.2%), specific growth rate was 0.32% day?1 and the food conversion rate was 6.7. The fish fed on diet B (initial weight, 246 ± 74 g; TL, 28.2 ± 2.5 cm) started to feed on day 3 and achieved a total growth rate of about 98% (final weight gain, 241 ± 69 g) and specific growth rate of 0.24% day?1 (feed conversion rate of 9.00 and mortality 13%). The fish fed on diet C (initial weight, 246 ± 74 g; TL, 28.2 ± 2.5 cm) started to feed on the pellets after 1 month and had a growth rate of 87% (weight gain 214 ± 85 g), a specific growth rate of 0.24% day?1 and a food conversion rate of 10.6 with considerable mortality (27%). In all three diet groups the fish grew with considerable variation in food consumption and growth rate, depending on seasonal temperature variations of the ambient sea water supplied to the rearing tanks. Chemical analysis showed that the protein level (amount) in the fish meat exceeded 20% in all three fish fillet samples.  相似文献

The teleost zebrafish (Danio rerio), an established model for human skeletal diseases, is reared under controlled conditions with defined parameters for temperature and photoperiod. Studies aimed at defining the proper rearing density have been performed with regard to behavioural and physiological stress response, sex ratio and reproduction. Studies concerning the effect of rearing density on the skeletal phenotype are lacking. This study analyses the response of the skeleton to different rearing densities and describes the skeletal deformities. Wild-type zebrafish were reared up to 30 dpf (days post-fertilization) in a common environment. From 30 to 90 dpf, animals were reared at three different densities: high density (HD), 32 fish l–1; medium density (MD), 8 fish l–1 and low density (LD), 2 fish l–1. Animals at 30 and 90 dpf were collected and whole-mount stained with Alizarin red S to visualize mineralized tissues. The entire skeleton was analysed for meristic counts and 172 types of deformities. The results showed that the rearing density significantly influenced the specimens’ average standard length, which decreased with the increase in the rearing density. Differences in meristic counts among the three groups were not observed. Rearing density–independent malformations affected the ribs, neural arches and the spines of the abdominal region, as well as vertebrae of the caudal complex. The HD group showed the highest number of deformities per specimen, the highest number of observed types of deformities and, together with the MD group, the highest frequency of specimens affected by severe deformities. In particular, the HD group showed deformities affecting arches, spines and vertebral centra in the caudal region of the vertebral column. This study provides evidence of an effect of the rearing density on the development of different skeletal phenotypes.  相似文献

The movement characteristics of Pacific oyster trochophores have received very little coverage in the scientific literature. Described here are not only changes in the swimming characteristics of Crassostrea gigas trochophores (size: 53–77 μm) in relation to time after fertilization and to inter‐female variation but also the effects of salinity and pH on movement characteristics. The percentage of motile trochophores was measured on images obtained through a dissecting microscope and the Velocity Average Path (VAP) was assessed using a Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) system. At 20°C, the first movements of the trochophores were observed at 6.5 h post‐fertilization. The mean (± SD) percentage of swimming trochophores and the VAP observed in seawater at 11.5 h post‐fertilization were 85 ± 10% and 146 ± 75 μm s?1, respectively (n = 8 females). Significant inter‐female variation in the percentage of motile trochophores (range: 66 ± 16–93 ± 3%) and in the VAP (55 ± 47–180 ± 90 μm s?1) was detected. Most of the trochophores were motile in a 9‰ salinity solution. Adjusting the pH of the seawater to values from 5.10 to 9.08 had no effect on swimming characteristics. The present study shows that the movement of oyster trochophores exhibits high plasticity in relation to environmental conditions because the highest percentages of swimming trochophores and optimal velocity values were recorded within large ranges of salinity and pH. Further research is required to determine whether the swimming performances of trochophores can be used to assess embryo quality in commercial hatcheries.  相似文献

The swimming performance of juvenile rock carp (Procypris rabaudi, Tchang) subjected to repeated fatigue exercise was studied using a flume-type respirometer at 20°C. The critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and oxygen consumption rate (MO2) of juvenile rock carp were measured during two successive stepped velocity tests, following a 60 min rest interval. Ucrit of rock carp was giving a recovery ratio (Rr) of 92.64%, and exertion exercise decreases Ucrit. When MO2 was plotted as a linear function of U, the slope for trial 1 was 1.06 and 1.50 for trial 2, indicating a decreasing in swimming efficiency. The maximum metabolic rate (MMR) increased from 17.06 ± 1.14 mmol O2/(kg·hr) to 19.14 ± 1.23 mmol O2/(kg·hr), and the exercise post oxygen consumption rate (EPOC) increased from 9.00 to 9.65 mmol O2/kg. Repeated fatiguing exercise increased both the aerobic and anaerobic cost of reaching Ucrit, but anaerobic metabolism accounted for a larger proportion in the trial 2. The data investigation on the swimming performance and the physiological response to fatigue provide important design criteria for fishways.  相似文献

Luteinizing hormone was removed from a commercial follicle stimulating hormone preparation (FSH-P) by QAE-A50 column chromatography. Dose rate of the FSH-rich fraction (FSH-W) significantly affected the number of transferable embryos recovered (P = 0.003), increasing from 4.5 ± 3.5 (x ± S.D.) at 2.7 units to 7.0 ± 6.5 at 5.4 units and then declining to 3.1 ± 3.9 at 10.8 units. These differences were the result of changes in the number of embryos fertilized (P = 0.004) (5.9 ± 4.4, 10.1 ± 9.1, and 5.1 ± 5.8 at the three dose rates) and in the total embryos recovered (8.0 ± 6.2, 13.8 ± 14.6, 11.2 ± 8.8). The percent transferable embryos declined with increasing dose of FSH-W from 66 ± 35% to 57 ± 31% and then 27 ± 25% (P < 0.001). In 130 Brahman crossbred cows, 5.4 units of FSH-W produced significantly more transferable embryos (6.3 ± 6.7) than 28-mg equivalents (Armour units) FSH-P (2.9 ± 4.0, P < 0.001). The number of fertilized embryos increased from 5.8 ± 6.7 to 9.0 ± 8.2 (P = 0.019). Adding LH to the FSH-W reversed the advantages of FSH-W. Fertilized embryo production declined from 12.8 ± 8.1 to 5.3 ± 3.6 (P < 0.001), resulting in a decline in the number of transferable embryos from 7.8 ± 6.6 to 4.4 ± 5.0 (P = 0.052). The blood progesterone levels at estrus in cows superovulated with FSH-P were higher (0.88 ng/ml) than in cows superovulated with FSH-W (0.45 ng/ml, P = 0.016). LH had a deleterious effect, due to reduction in fertilization rates on the number of transferable embryos recovered from donor cows stimulated with FSH.  相似文献

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is used as a model system for in vivo studies. To expand the research scope of physical, biochemical and physiological studies, a cold-tolerant model of zebrafish was developed. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) muscle form of creatine kinase (CK, EC 2.7.3.2) can maintain enzymatic activity at a temperature of around 15°C. However, a cold-inducible promoter of zebrafish, hsc 70 (heat shock protein 70 cognate), is able to increase the expression of gene product by 9.8 fold at a temperature of 16°C. Therefore, the carp CK gene was promoted by hsc 70 and transfected into zebrafish embryos. Resulting transgenic zebrafish survived and could maintain its swimming behavior at 13°C, which was not possible with the wild-type zebrafish. The swimming distance of the transgenic fish was 42% greater than that of the wild type at 13°C. This new transgenic fish model is ideal for studies of ectothermal vertebrates in low-temperature environments.  相似文献

The presence of breeding tubercles (BTs) on the pectoral fins has been investigated as a typical male secondary sexual characteristic (SSC) that distinguish males from females in adult zebrafish. Nonetheless, the earliest occurrence of these tubercles and its association with puberty onset and body growth remain unclear. In this study, using morphological, histological and statistical analyses, the authors examined the first appearance of BTs and puberty onset in male zebrafish, with particular emphasis on the potential impact of body growth on them. The results of this study revealed that BTs distributed along the first five branched pectoral fin rays were the earliest manifestation of male SSCs, which is significantly strongly correlated with body weight (R2 = 0.9609, P < 0.001), and could be used as a “gold standard” for the earliest sex distinction (<0.1 g in weight). Using the first appearance of BTs (<0.20 mm2) as a metric, the authors established that male puberty commenced at a body weight of c. 0.056 ± 0.015 g or a standard length of 10.99 ± 1.051 mm (mean ± S.D. ). In this study, the authors thus established a simple method that can be used to sex live zebrafish at the pubertal stage and provides the first evidence for the relationship of BTs and male puberty initiation with body growth. These findings will accordingly lay a foundation for exploring mechanisms of the SSCs and male puberty onset in zebrafish and other teleost fish.  相似文献

Both obesity and aging increase intrahepatic fat (IHF) content, which leads to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance. We evaluated the effects of diet and diet in conjunction with exercise on IHF content and associated metabolic abnormalities in obese older adults. Eighteen obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) older (≥65 years old) adults completed a 6‐month clinical trial. Participants were randomized to diet (D group; n = 9) or diet + exercise (D+E group; n = 9). Primary outcome was IHF quantified by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Secondary outcomes included insulin sensitivity (assessed by oral glucose tolerance), body composition (assessed by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry), physical function (VO2peak and strength), glucose, lipids, and blood pressure (BP). Body weight (D: ?9 ± 1%, D+E: ?10 ± 2%, both P < 0.05) and fat mass (D: ?13 ± 3%, D+E ?16 ± 3%, both P < 0.05) decreased in both groups but there was no difference between groups. IHF decreased to a similar extent in both groups (D: ?46 ± 11%, D+E: ?45 ± 8%, both P < 0.05), which was accompanied by comparable improvements in insulin sensitivity (D: 66 ± 25%, D+E: 68 ± 28%, both P < 0.05). The relative decreases in IHF correlated directly with relative increases in insulin sensitivity index (ISI) (r = ?0.52; P < 0.05). Improvements in VO2peak, strength, plasma triglyceride (TG), and low‐density lipoprotein–cholesterol concentration, and diastolic BP occurred in the D+E group (all P < 0.05) but not in the D group. Diet with or without exercise results in significant decreases in IHF content accompanied by considerable improvements in insulin sensitivity in obese older adults. The addition of exercise to diet therapy improves physical function and other obesity‐ and aging‐related metabolic abnormalities.  相似文献

Recently, interest has peaked regarding the posture of extinct hominins. Here, we present a new method of reconstructing lordosis angles of extinct hominin specimens based on pelvic morphology, more specifically the orientation of the sacrum in relation to the acetabulum (pelvic incidence). Two regression models based on the correlation between pelvic incidence and lordosis angle in living hominoids have been developed. The mean values of the calculated lordosis angles based on these models are 36°?45° for australopithecines, 45°?47° for Homo erectus, 27°?34° for the Neandertals and the Sima de los Huesos hominins, and 49°?51° for fossil H. sapiens. The newly calculated lordosis values are consistent with previously published values of extinct hominins (Been et al.: Am J Phys Anthropol 147 (2012) 64–77). If the mean values of the present nonhuman hominoids are representative of the pelvic and lumbar morphology of the last common ancestor between humans and nonhuman hominoids, then both pelvic incidence and lordosis angle dramatically increased during hominin evolution from 27° ± 5 to 22° ± 3 (respectively) in nonhuman hominoids to 54° ± 10 and 51° ± 11 in modern humans. This change to a more human‐like configuration appeared early in the hominin evolution as the pelvis and spines of both australopithecines and H. erectus show a higher pelvic incidence and lordosis angle than nonhuman hominoids. The Sima de los Huesos hominins and Neandertals show a derived configuration with a low pelvic incidence and lordosis angle. Summary Pagothenia borchgrevinki, an Antarctic teleost fish was swum to exhaustion and changes in lactic acid levels and blood haematocrit were monitored during recovery. The fish did not perform well at high swimming speeds due to an inability of the white myotomal muscle to produce ATP by anaerobic glycolysis. Consequently, low levels of lactic acid were produced which were fairly rapidly broken down. Haematocrit values were low in non-exercised fish, and these increased by over 100% during exercise, falling back to control levels over many hours. This is probably related to the increased oxygen demand during exercise.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cyclophosphamide induces fetal defects through metabolic activation by cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases (CYP). The effects of piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a CYP inhibitor, on the fetal development and external, visceral, and skeletal abnormalities induced by cyclophosphamide were investigated in rats. METHODS: Pregnant rats were daily administered PBO (400 mg/kg) by gavage for 7 days (the 6th to 12th day of gestation), and intraperitoneally administered with cyclophosphamide (12 mg/kg) 4 h after the final treatment. On the 20th day of gestation, maternal and fetal abnormalities were determined by Cesarean section. RESULTS: Cyclophosphamide reduced fetal body weights by 30–40% without increasing resorption or death. In addition, it induced malformations in live fetuses: 100, 98, and 98.2% of the external (head and limb defects), visceral (cerebroventricular dilatation, cleft palate, and renal pelvic/ureteric dilatation), and skeletal (acrania, vertebral/costal malformations, and delayed ossification) abnormalities, respectively. The pre-treatment of PBO greatly decreased mRNA expression and activity of hepatic CYP2B, which metabolizes cyclophosphamide into teratogenic acrolein and cytotoxic phosphoramide mustard. Moreover, PBO remarkably attenuated cyclophosphamide-induced body weight loss and abnormalities of fetuses; score 3.57 versus 1.87 for exencephaly, 75.5% versus 42.5% for limb defects, 65.3% versus 22% for cerebroventricular dilatation, 59.2% versus 5.1% for cleft palate, score 1.28 versus 0.93 for renal pelvic/ureteric dilatation, 71.9–82.5% versus 23–45.9% for vertebral/costal malformations, and 84.2% versus 57.4% for delayed ossification in cyclophosphamide alone and PBO co-administration groups. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that repeated treatment with PBO may improve cyclophosphamide-induced body weight loss and malformations of fetuses by down-regulating CYP2B. Medaka (O. latipes) and zebrafish (D. rerio) are two teleost fish increasingly used as models to study human skeletal diseases. Although they are similar in size, swimming pattern and many other characteristics, these two species are very distant from an evolutionary point of view (by at least 100 million years). A prominent difference between the skeletons of medaka and zebrafish is the total absence of osteocytes in medaka (anosteocytic), while zebrafish bone contains numerous osteocytes (osteocytic). This fundamental difference suggests the possibility that the bony elements of their skeleton may be different in a variety of other aspects, structural, mechanical or both, particularly in heavily loaded bones like the vertebrae. Here we report on the results of a comparative study that aimed to determine the similarities and differences in medaka and zebrafish vertebrae in terms of their macro- to nanostructure, composition and mechanical properties. Our results reveal many similarities between medaka and zebrafish vertebrae, making the lack or presence of osteocytes the only major difference between the bones of these two species.  相似文献

In this study we tried to develop a uniform method of sperm cryopreservation for four cyprinid fish species indigenous to Hungarian waters: the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), the bream (Abramis brama L.), the silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna L.) and the barbel (Barbus barbus L.). The sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor in the presence of five extenders (350 mm fructose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 350 mm glucose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 300 mm sucrose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 200 mm KCl, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0 and modified Kurokura's extender) and two cryoprotectants: 10% methanol (MeOH) and 10% dimethyl‐sulfoxide. The highest post‐thaw motility (roach: 77 ± 6%, bream: 77 ± 6%, silver bream: 67 ± 5%, barbel: 75 ± 6%), fertilization (roach: 84 ± 4%, bream: 83 ± 2%, silver bream: 63 ± 2%, barbel: 70 ± 4%) and hatching (roach: 74 ± 2%, bream: 67 ± 6%, silver bream: 54 ± 2%, barbel: 61 ± 4%) rates were found when either fructose or glucose extenders were used in combination with MeOH as cryoprotectant for all four investigated species. Strong correlations were found between post‐thaw motility of the sperm and fertilization or hatching rates, which indicates that motility can be used to predict fertilization success in these species.  相似文献

The zebrafish has become a valuable vertebrate model organism in a wide range of scientific disciplines, but current information concerning the physiological temperature response of adult zebrafish is rather scarce. In this study, zebrafish were experimentally acclimated for 28 days to 18, 26 or 34 °C and a suite of non-invasive and invasive methods was applied to determine the thermal dependence of zebrafish physiological condition. With decreasing temperature, the metabolic rate of zebrafish decreased, as shown by the decreasing oxygen uptake and ammonia excretion rates, limiting the critical swimming speed, probably due to a decreased muscle fibre power output. In response to exercise, fuel stores were mobilized to the liver as shown by the increased hepatosomatic index, liver total absolute energetic value and liver carbohydrate concentration but due to the low metabolic rate they could not be adequately addressed to power swimming activity at 18 °C. Conversely, the increased metabolic performance at high temperature came with an increased metabolic cost resulting in decreased energy status reflected particularly well by the non-invasive condition factor and invasive measures of carcass protein concentration, carcass total absolute energetic value and liver carbohydrate concentration. We showed that the combined measurement of the relative condition factor and critical swimming speed is a powerful non-invasive tool for long-term follow-up studies. Invasive methods were redundant for measuring general energy status but they provided detailed information concerning metabolic reorganization. With this study we proved that the usefulness of the zebrafish as a model organism can easily be expanded to include physiological studies and we provided a reference dataset for the selection of measures of physiological responses for future studies using the zebrafish.  相似文献
