Using an extensive database compiled by scientific observers aboard commercial fishing operations between 1984 and 2014, we describe the maturity and size structures of white warehou Seriolella caerulea and silver warehou Seriolella punctata from by-catch of the trawling industrial fisheries operating in the austral zone off Chile. Macroscopic maturity stages and gonadosomatic (IGS) index show mature females throughout the year and a pronounced spawning period in both austral autumn and winter seasons, with an IGS peak in July for S. punctata and August for S. caerulea. Reproductive patterns in both species show an extended spawning season (July to September) across the area between 43 and 47° S. Length–mass relationships showed significant differences between sexes in both species, where females reach a larger size. Fork length at 50% maturity was 43.5 cm for S. caerulea and 37.2 cm for S. punctata. Female catch composition is dominated by adult fish (96% for S. caerulea and 86% for S. punctata). Currently, both species are exploited with no assessment and management-decision framework. Therefore, information regarding reproductive biology and demographic traits becomes an important baseline to ensure adequate fisheries management for both species.  相似文献

The reproductive modes of the Scorpaenidae are extremely varied: oviparity, viviparity, and even spawning of internally fertilized eggs or embryos (zygoparity or embryoparity), as in Helicolenus, are known. The ovarian structure of this family is divided into two types by the arrangement of the stroma and the ovarian cavity. One type is the ovary in which the lamella-like stroma develops from the ovarian hilus located on the dorsal side and where the ovarian cavity is located on the ventral side of ovary, classified as “cystovarian type II-1” by Takano (1989). In the other type, the stroma in the ovary develops radially around the blood circulatory system that traverses the center of the ovary, and then the ovarian cavity surrounds all the ovary, classified as “cystovarian type II-3” by Takano (1989). In the present analysis, previous reports about ovarian structure and the relationship to the reproductive mode of scorpaenids were described, and the ovarian structure of eight genera of Scorpaenidae was examined. The ovary of cystovarian type II-1 is seen only in viviparous genera and is not seen in oviparous genera. However, the cystovarian type II-1 is a general structure in other families of Scorpaeniformes, and this structure could be considered a primitive type of ovary rather than that acquired by the process of evolution from oviparity to viviparity. The ovary of cystovarian type II-3 is seen in all six oviparous genera and the one zygoparous genus examined. The ovary of this type is not found in any other family of teleosts, so it could be a structure originally divided in Scorpaenidae. In the genera having the cystovarian type II-3 ovary, there is a common feature of spawning: a floating egg mass encompassed by the gelatinous material. We postulate that the evolution of reproductive mode in the scorpaenid fishes is as follows: Sebastes and Sebastiscus have a primitive ovary in which viviparity has developed, whereas the genera that spawn a floating egg mass evolved the ovarian structure from primitive type to cystovarian type II-3, and further zygoparity, such as in Helicolenus, evolved from them.  相似文献

Reproductive aspects of a peripheral population of Galaxias maculatus are described and the relationship with the physiology and handling of energetic reserves under marginal environmental conditions is investigated. The G. maculatus population of Tierra del Fuego has an extended reproductive season, with differences in timing and duration compared to other populations of continental Patagonia, New Zealand and Australia. Elevated gonadosomatic indexes (IG) were observed during this period in both sexes (maximum IG = 33.49% males; 35.94% females). The high abundance of mature males (with high IG values) on the spawning grounds during the reproductive season suggests that they were waiting for the return of the mature females. Larger females reached total maturation at the beginning of the reproductive season, whereas the size of maturing females diminished toward the end (mean TL = 96 mm, October; 70 mm, February). Both sexes showed an extremely high investment in reproduction, reaching a maximum IG of about 35% for both sexes. At the beginning of the reproductive season females reached the maximum median IH (3.37%) and males the minimum (0.96%), suggesting differences in the role of the liver in the management of energetic reserves during sexual maturation. The variation in the fat index (IF) suggests that fat reserves were used to survive winter (maximum median IF > 1%, autumn; minimum about 0.2%, spring).  相似文献

This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the dietary composition of the ambush predator Neosebastes pandus and compares the diets of 49 species from 39 studies of three benthic predatory families in the Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae (20 species), Triglidae (19 species) and Platycephalidae (10 species). A total of 275 N. pandus were collected from the west (Rottnest Island) and south (Esperance) coasts of south‐western Australia and the percentage frequency and volumetric contribution of the stomach contents identified. Fish from the west coast consumed a greater mean number of broad taxonomic groups and were more diverse in their diet than fish from the south coast. Cephalopods, brachyurans and teleosts were the largest overall contributors to diet, with teleosts being more important to diets of west‐coast fish and polychaetes for south‐coast fish. This reflects differences in habitat between the two locations. Dietary composition also changed with increasing body size, reflecting morphological changes that allow bigger fish to capture and ingest larger, more mobile prey. Meta‐analysis of the diets of 49 species of scorpaenid, triglid and platycephalid revealed that they feed predominantly on teleosts and large crustaceans. Significant differences in diet were detected among families, with platycephalids being the most distinct and feeding more on teleosts than scorpaenids and triglids.  相似文献

In the Northeast and the Northwest Pacific, 26 and 68 species of Sebastes occur, respectively, the similar appearance of some pairs of shallow coastal water species in the two regions having been interpreted as evidence either for migration of ancestral species or of morphological convergence. To distinguish between these competing hypotheses, a portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b gene was sequenced from 23 species of Sebastes from the Northwest Pacific and phylogenetic trees constructed so as to include the existing data from Northeastern species of Sebastes. The results clearly indicated separate origins for external morphology in Northeast and Northwest Pacific species. The shallow coastal water species in the Northwest Pacific are thought to have diverged from about 9.8MYA. Furthermore, the phylogenetic position of Sebastes was inferred among the subfamily Sebastinae, Helicolenus, Hozukius, Sebastes, and Sebastiscus, the results suggesting that Helicolenus and Hozukius are more closely related to Sebastes than Sebastiscus.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the white grunt Haemulon plumierii was studied from 360 individuals obtained from artisanal fisheries landings in the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil, between August 2010 and March 2012. The overall sex‐ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1, although males predominated in larger size classes. β‐Binomial modelling of historical sex‐ratio data indicated that the catch rate of females has increased in recent years. Females reached maturity at a smaller total length (LT; 214 mm) than males (235 mm LT) and the LT at which 50% of all individuals are mature (L50) was 220 mm, corresponding to 41·5% of the maximum recorded LT. Variation in the gonado‐somatic index and in the relative frequency of reproductive stages indicates that reproduction occurs year round, with increased activity during the austral spring and summer. Fecundity was not size dependent. The reproductive parameters provided here can support management measures focussed on seasonal closures during spawning peaks (September to November and February to March) and minimum sizes (>L50) for the capture of this important artisanal fisheries resource in Abrolhos, the region with the largest and most biodiverse coralline reefs in the South Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Latitudinal variation in the reproductive characteristics of a temperate marine herbivore, rock blackfish Girella elevata, was examined from three regions of the south‐eastern Australian coast. Biological sampling covered 780 km of coastline, including the majority of the species distribution. The sampling range incorporated three distinct oceanographic regions of the East Australian Current, a poleward‐flowing western boundary current of the Southern Pacific Gyre and climate‐change hotspot. Girella elevata are a highly fecund, group synchronous (multiple batch)‐spawner. Mean fork length (LF) and age at maturity were greater for females than males within all regions, with both male and female G. elevata of the southern region maturing at a greater size and age than those from the central region. Estimates of batch fecundity (FB) were greatest in the northern and southern regions, relative to the central region where growth rates were greatest. Significant positive relationships were observed between FB and LF, and FB and total fish mass. Gonado‐somatic indices indicated latitudinal synchrony in spawning seasonality between G. elevata at higher latitudes, spawning in the late austral spring and summer. A late or prolonged spawning period is evident for G. elevata from the northern region. Juvenile recruitment to intertidal rock pools within the central and southern regions was synchronous with the spawning season, however, no juveniles were found within the northern region. The implications of latitudinal variation in reproductive characteristics are discussed in the context of climate and oceanographic conditions of south‐east Australia.  相似文献

Two hundred and seven individuals (103 females and 104 males) of bluemouth Helicolenus dactylopterus (Scorpaeniformes, Sebastidae), a commercially important deep‐water species with an unusual reproductive strategy, from the eastern Atlantic Ocean ranging from 13·9 to 37·5 cm total length (LT) were analysed from September 2011 to October 2012. The analysis included gonad maturity phases and blood‐plasma levels of oestradiol‐17β (E2), 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) and 17,20β‐dihydroxypregn‐4‐en‐3‐one (17,20β‐P). Results confirmed the existence of an annual reproductive cycle with asynchrony between females and males and a spawning season from January to May. A pronounced peak in 17,20β‐P in October for both sexes was associated with possible mating behaviour and recent copula. Levels of E2 increased preceding the elevation of the gonado‐somatic index during ovarian growth and were lower during regression and regeneration. The frequency distribution of oocyte–embryonic stages and variation of hormone levels suggest the existence of daily rhythms. Fertilization was detected between 2000–0000 and 0800–1200 h and spawning took place throughout the day peaking between 2000 and 0000 h. The cyclic pattern of sex steroids and ovarian recruitment provides a new insight into the reproductive strategy of this species.  相似文献

Species of the genus Trematomus are the most common nototheniids in the High-Antarctic Zone, and several live sympatrically on the Ross Sea continental shelf. Histological analysis of gonadal development of T. bernacchii, T. hansoni and T. newnesi was carried out on samples collected during the austral summer in the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay, western Ross Sea. Gonads of both females and males of the three species were described based on macroscopic and histologic scales. Histologically, both males and females of T. bernacchii were in postspawning or in early maturing condition, thus indicating that they recently completed spawning. Conversely, most specimens of T. hansoni were in spawning condition, as evidenced by the histological appearance of gonads and by the high value of gonado-somatic index (GSI) of females between 20 and 36%. In the same period, females of T. newnesi had maturing ovaries, whereas males were at an early developmental stage of maturity. In all species, the testicular structure closely resembled the unrestricted spermatogonial type, although spermatogonia were more concentrated in the blind end of tubules. On the basis of the pattern of oocyte maturity observed within the ovarian lamellae, all Trematomus had a group synchronous ovary, as commonly reported in Antarctic fish. Furthermore, the presence of oocytes showing the commencement of yolk deposition in spent females confirms that vitellogenesis is a slow process, extending over at least 1 year. The reproductive strategies of Trematomus are discussed in terms of timing of the spawning season of each species as a function of the seasonal production cycle and of the interspecific relationships. The spawning activities of the three species investigated appeared to be mismatched with respect to time as well as location within the range of distribution of each.  相似文献

To resolve varied and sometimes conflicting accounts of spawning and habitat characteristics for winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus, seasonal patterns in abundance and reproductive condition were investigated in the New York Bight, near the southern edge of their current reproductive range. Fish were collected from trawl surveys on the inner continental shelf from October 2006 to October 2007. Pseudopleuronectes americanus were most abundant during January and April surveys, were rarely collected in August, with intermediate abundances in June and October. Measurements of fish condition [hepato‐somatic index (IH), condition factor (K) and the per cent dry mass of muscle tissue (%MD)] and reproductive condition [gonado‐somatic index (IG)] were determined to evaluate seasonal changes in energy accumulation and depletion and reproduction. Males and females had similar patterns in body and reproductive condition, although the magnitude of change was greater for females. IH values were highest during spring and early summer, suggesting increased feeding following spawning. K and %MD increased through spring and summer then declined in the autumn and winter concurrent with gonadal development. Gonads began developing in the autumn, and in January, IG values approached spawning levels, with many spent individuals collected in spring. Within these general patterns, however, there was a large degree of variability among individuals, and a few mature non‐reproductive (‘skipped spawning’) females were observed. In the period after spawning, increased energy intake, indicated by increased IH, may influence reproductive output since this energy is gradually transferred to the muscle and used for gonadal development in the forthcoming year. The occurrence of ripening individuals on the inner continental shelf in January suggests that these fish either rapidly move into estuaries to spawn by February–March or they remain on the inner shelf to spawn, or some combination of these. Future studies should evaluate these possibilities, as both estuarine and inner shelf habitats are potentially affected by activities such as dredging, sand dredging and wind energy development.  相似文献

The assumption for hermaphroditic fish species that mature individuals of the terminal sex arise directly from mature individuals of the primary sex has led to the use of sex ratios as a proxy for age at maturity (A50). The timing of transition and deficient energy reserves, however, can result in a delay between transition and spawning. To test the assumption of female maturity and investigate the relationship between maturation and energy reserves, common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, a protandrous hermaphrodite, were collected from rivers, estuaries, inlets and offshore habitats on the east coast of Florida during 2010–2015. Immature females were observed every month, with lowest proportions during the peak spawning months of July and August. When calculated based on sex ratio, A50 (8.1 years) overestimated the age at which 50% of the female population was, in fact, mature (4.1–4.9 years). Best-fit models indicate that mesenteric fat index (IF) and hepato-somatic index (IH) were significantly affected by gonad phase, month and size and weakly by habitat. In post hoc analysis, immature female IF did not differ significantly from developing and regenerating females, but immature female IH was significantly lower than that for all mature phases except animals in the regressing phase. Although immature females may have sufficient energy in terms of fat, it appears that energy is not allocated to reproductive processes, as evidenced by lower IH. Nonetheless, approximately 95% of females were spawning-capable during peak spawning months, suggesting that the energy threshold at which immature females reach maturity is met by most females each spawning cycle.  相似文献

Hardhead catfish Ariopsis felis are a common marine catfish in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The low economic value of this species has depressed interest and research, and although the species is known for its extremely low fecundity and large oocytes, little else is known about this catfish species. A total of 1230 samples across all months of the year from 2016 to 2018 resulted in 681 females, and analysis of gonado-somatic index (IG) revealed 1% to be a clear cut-off indicating maturity. Females are considered capable of spawning from April to June when IG averaged 4–8%. Both atresia and post-ovulatory follicles were present in July, suggesting that spawning ends in July in the northern GOM. The 1% IG cut-off was used to designate maturity, and from that an L50 of 253 mm was estimated. Batch fecundity from 41 females estimated a mean batch size of 36 oocytes. Perhaps the most interesting finding was the presence of secondary growth stage oocytes (e.g., cortical alveoli) from July through November, well outside the spawning capable period. Furthermore, 78% of females had some early vitellogenic oocytes present during the non-spawning season, and the distribution of these relatively large (2–5 mm) oocytes did not change over time. The results here are not only important as reproductive biology information for a common and abundant species, but also present interesting and unusual patterns of non-spawning season oocyte development that is not commonly seen in Western Hemisphere subtropical fish species.  相似文献

Macroscopic and histological studies were carried out to describe the reproductive styles and sex reversal and to follow gonadal changes in captive yellowfin seabream during the second year of life. Four reproductive styles are found in Acanthopagrus latus (Houttuyn, 1782): (i) males and females (gonochorism), (ii) functional males, (iii) transitionals and (iv) functional females. The species is a protandric hermaphrodite and begins life as a functional male with testicular zone undergoing active spermatogenesis, while the ovarian zone is arrested at the primary growth (perinucleolar) phase. Males and females were encountered in virtually all size‐classes. Functional males outnumbered the functional females in all size‐classes in which they were encountered. Sex reversal begins in the transitionals from July to August, after spawning in the functional males, at 14.9–20.2 cm standard length (SL) and, by November, maturation of the ovarian tissue begins. A. latus in cages in Kuwait waters spawns from January to April with a peak in February for males, and a peak in March for females and transitionals. Spawning begins in the 18.3–20.2 cm size‐range fish, peaking in the 20.3–22.2 cm size‐range in both males and females and also in the transitionals, although a few of the latter spawn from 14.9 cm SL. In relation to age, spawning begins at 20 months in males and peaks at 21 months. Females begin to spawn at 21 months with a peak at 22 months, while transitionals generally begin to spawn at 20 months, although a few 14–15‐month‐old sex‐changing individuals were encountered. Temperature, either alone or in combination with other unknown factors, triggers spawning in A. latus.  相似文献

From June 2004 to May 2006, the reproductive biology of the blue runner Caranx crysos was studied in the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia). Of 1668 individuals examined, 777 were females (46.6%) and 891 were males (53.4%). The sex ratio significantly deviated in favour of males (♀:♂ = 0.87 : 1). The difference in the numbers of females and males was significant among size‐classes. However, there was no significant difference between sexes over months and seasons. Monthly changes in the Gonado‐Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase during summer to very high levels in July (3.51% for males and 2.55% for females) and August (3.47% for males and 2.59% for females) before declining sharply in September (0.58% for females and 0.38% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase, from 20 May to the first 10 days of July, followed by a pre‐spawning phase, from 20 July to 20 August. From the last 10 days of August to 20 September the gonads were in the ripe and spawning stages. From the end of September to early May, gonads were in the post‐spawning and resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was significantly different in males and females: males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 210.20, whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 222.3 mm. Age at maturity was 2.4 years for males and 2.8 years for females.  相似文献

This study presents the first histology‐based assessment of the reproductive dynamics of south‐west Pacific striped marlin Kajikia audax. Maturity and reproductive status were assessed from histological sections of ovaries (n = 234) and testes (n = 243) of fish caught in commercial longline and recreational fisheries between 2006 and 2009. Spawning peaked in the Coral Sea during November and December at sea surface temperatures between 24·8 and 28·3° C. Lower jaw fork length (LLJF) at 50% maturity (LLJF50), a key variable for stock assessment, was estimated to be 2100 ± 102 mm (mean + s.e .) for females and 1668 ± 18 mm for males. Unlike large pelagic tunas Thunnus spp., the proportion of females increased with length and spawning fish formed multiple large‐scale aggregations within a broad latitudinal band. This study provides a starting point for biological parameters needed for stock assessment and conservation of K. audax and introduces the multiple aggregation spawning concept as a reproductive mechanism to explain genetic heterogeneity observed in some highly migratory species.  相似文献

To evaluate the spawning success of male Japanese minnows,Pseudorasbora parva, and female mate choice, spawning behaviour was observed under both artificial and experimental conditions. Larger males had larger territories and greater reproductive success. The body weight of territorial males decreased during the maintenance of territories, while that of non-territorial males increased significantly. When the weight of non-territorial males exceeded that of territorial males, the former began to establish new territories on the substrate, suggesting a conditional strategy by non-territorial males to trade off immediate reproductive success with growth and hence improve future reproductive success. Females chose males with larger body size, probably based on dominance rank rather than the quality (or size) of territory. It was concluded that females choose males of higher dominance rank and that males compete for large territories, both of which play an important part in male reproductive success.  相似文献

In 1996 and 1997, the spawning behavior of fluvial white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis, was observed in the upstream area of an erosion control dam. A small number of males with relatively large body size mated successfully with females as a pair, while almost all satellite males did not sneak successfully, resulting in a non-random mating system. The low sneaking success of subordinate males, in addition to the monopolization of spawning opportunities by a few dominant males, is one of the most important causes of skewed reproductive success among males. The total number of adult fishes in the study area (N: approximately half of the whole tributary above a dam) was estimated as 148 and 102 in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Based on these findings and some further assumptions, the estimated effective population size (Ne) was low in both years. The Ne/N ratio ranged from 0.33 to 0.36 in both years. In addition to reduced population size by construction of an impassable dam, the above-dam population suffered low Ne due to skewed reproductive success among males. The low Ne may be one cause of extinction in above-dam populations of fluvial charr, especially just after the construction of impassable barriers.  相似文献

Histological changes in the ovaries of pike from two shallow, adjacent, Scottish lakes are described and related to a macroscopic scale of maturity stages and to changes in gonad weight. There was no evidence of pre-ovulatory degeneration although occasional residual oocytes were present in spent ovaries. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was high in males from October to March, and in females it increased through the winter months to a maximum immediately prior to spawning. Maximum ovarian weight was 8.3–9.0% of total body weight compared with only 0.9–1.1% for testes. These GSIs were low compared with other reports for the British Isles, suggesting lower reproductive output. Spawning occurred in the first two weeks of April at a water temperature of 6.0–7.5° C. Fecundity was described from a regression of egg number (F) on fork length (f.l.): log10F= -1.51 + 3.33 log10 f.l. (cm). Mean egg diameter after preservation varied from 1.1 to 2.4 mm over the size range examined. Males were mature at age 2 at a length of ≥ 27 cm, while females first spawned at age 3 at a length of ≤ 28 cm, although a minority were mature at age 2. The sex ratio was 1.2 males: 1 female at Kinord and 1.4 : 1 at Davan. Greater egg production at Davan, 50 678 ha?1, compared with Kinord, 33 557 ha?1, was due to higher individual fecundity-at-age resulting from better growth. Fecundity (19.29 × 103 calculated for a pike of 55 cm F.L.), relative fecundity of only 10–24 eggs per gram wet weight of adult, and GSI values were low compared with pike in North America and Eurasia. Food supply may restrict reproductive output of pike in Lochs Kinord and Davan. The abundance ratio of predator: prey is high with the main prey species, perch, present in low numbers, and the only alternative species is eel in these simple fish communities.  相似文献

This study describes the reproductive strategy of the sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus, an invasive and dominant species in Erhai Lake in China with the goal of understanding how reproductive strategy contributes to its environmental adaptability and invasive potential. Specimens (n = 3583) were collected monthly or bimonthly from July 2009 to June 2011 (min: 114‐Feb, max: 883‐Aug), using gill nets (inner/outer mesh = 30/110 mm, stretched mesh). Gonads were removed, weighed and preserved for further (histological) analyses. Oocyte size‐frequency distribution was continuous and had advanced vitellogenic oocytes with postovulatory follicles present in spawning females, both suggesting that sharpbelly is a multiple spawner with adhesive eggs. Spawning extended from April to September, with the peak period from May to August. Standard lengths (SL, cm) at minimal observed maturity/L50/L99.9 values were 4.6/5.6/10.5 for females and 5.1/5.5/7.5 cm for males, respectively. Females were over‐represented (P < 0.01) in SL‐classes over 9 cm and males completely absent from the 13 to 19 cm SL‐classes. Overall sex ratio was highly significantly (P < 0.01) biased towards females (♀ = 1518, ♂ = 685, ♀/♂  = 2.21), however this was reversed in the spawning stock (8.3–16 cm, ♀ = 58, ♂ = 142, ♂/♀  = 2.45, P < 0.01). Batch spawning, a long spawning period, high male investment in reproduction and adhesive eggs all represent local adaptations in reproductive strategy that, along with other environmental factors, contribute to the invasion success of sharpbelly in Erhai.  相似文献

Although oogonial proliferation continues in mature females in most teleosts, its dynamics and the transformation of oogonia to early meiotic oocytes during the reproductive cycle have received little attention. In the present study, early oogenesis was examined throughout the reproductive cycle in two Clupeiform fishes, the Mediterranean sardine, Sardina pilchardus, and the European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus. Observations using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) provided extensive information on markers of oogonial proliferation (mitotic divisions, oogonia nests) and meiotic prophase I divisions of oocyte nests (leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene) in ovaries of different reproductive phases. In sardine, oogonial proliferation persisted throughout the entire reproductive cycle, whereas in anchovy, it was more pronounced prior to (developing ovaries) and after (resting ovaries) the spawning period. Anchovy exhibited a higher rate of meiotic activity in developing ovaries, whereas sardine exhibited a higher rate in resting ovaries. The observed differences between the two species can potentially be attributed to different seasonal patterns of energy allocation to reproduction and the synchronization between feeding and the spawning season.  相似文献
