The diversity of microbial communities associated with the intestinal mucosa and the intestinal contents of fish with different nutritional profiles have been investigated. Differences in the intestinal microbiota of fish with different dietary preferences have been revealed using group-specific primers for the main large taxa of bacteria. Representatives of the phyla Planctomycetes, Vernicomicrobia, and Cyanobacteria have been detected in the intestinal contents of all investigated nonpredatory (crucian carp, roach, and dace) and predatory (pikeperch, pike, and perch) fish. Representatives of the phylum Firmicutes were detected in the intestinal mucosa and intestinal contents of predatory fish species, but not in those of the nonpredatory fish.  相似文献

1. In a correlative study, we investigated the relative importance of fish predation, refuge availability and resource supply in determining the abundance and size distributions of the introduced and omnivorous signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in lakes and streams. Moreover, the biomass and food selection of predatory fish was estimated in each habitat type and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen were measured in perch (Perca fluviatilis), the dominant predator in the lakes, and in its potential food sources (crayfish, juvenile roach and isopods). 2. In lakes, crayfish were the most frequent prey in large perch (46%), followed by other macroinvertebrates (26%, including the isopod Asellus aquaticus) and small fish (25%). Crayfish and fish dominated the gut contents of large perch with respect to biomass. Nitrogen signatures showed that perch were one trophic level above crayfish (approx. 3.4‰) and a two‐source mixing model using nitrogen isotope values indicated that crayfish (81%) contributed significantly more to perch isotope values than did juvenile roach (19%). A positive correlation was found between the abundance of crayfish and the biomass of large perch. Crayfish abundance in lakes was also positively correlated with the proportion of cobbles in the littoral zone. Lake productivity (chlorophyll a) was positively correlated with crayfish size, but not with crayfish abundance. 3. In streams, brown trout (Salmo trutta) were the most abundant predatory fish. Gut contents of large trout in a forested stream showed that terrestrial insects were the most frequently found prey (60%), followed by small crayfish (27%) and isopods (27%). In contrast to lakes, the relative abundance of crayfish was negatively correlated with the total biomass of predatory fish and with total biomass of trout. However, abundance of crayfish at sites with a low biomass of predatory fish varied considerably and was related to substratum grain size, with fewer crayfish being caught when the substratum was sandy or dominated by large boulders. The mean size of crayfish was greater at stream sites with a high standing stock of periphyton, but neither predator biomass nor substratum grain size was correlated with crayfish size. 4. Our results suggest that bottom‐up processes influence crayfish size in lakes and streams independent of predator biomass and substratum availability. However, bottom‐up processes do not influence crayfish abundance. Instead, substratum availability (lakes) and interactions between predation and substratum grain size (streams) need to be considered in order to predict crayfish abundance.  相似文献

Estuaries are particularly susceptible to climate change and drought resulting in atypical changes to freshwater flows. How such changes in flow impact on the ecology of estuarine fishes may depend on how a species moves in response to changing flow conditions. Acoustic telemetry was used to interpret fine-scale movements of two co-inhabiting estuarine fish species, black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri and estuary perch, Macquaria colonorum in relation to freshwater flows, season and moon phase. We found black bream to be highly mobile, regularly travelling the length of the estuary and into the neighbouring estuaries. In contrast, estuary perch had particular home ranges and made occasional, upstream or downstream movements. Possibly influenced by freshwater flows, estuary perch moved at greater rates in the Tambo compared to fish in the Mitchell. Black bream resided in the upper estuary during winter and spring and the lower estuary during summer and autumn, whereas estuary perch remained in the upper estuary throughout the year, with occasional downstream movements in winter and spring. This study revealed 1) significantly large increases in freshwater flows result in mass downstream movements in both species, 2) fish moved upstream during full moons and 3) there are contrasting spatio-temporal patterns in movement between species. The results from this study highlight that estuarine fishes are likely to show differential sensitivity to the impacts of drought and climate change and illustrate how acoustic telemetry methods can be used to determine the environmental needs of fishes and help efforts to conserve and manage estuaries worldwide.  相似文献

Social living of animals is a broadly occurring phenomenon, although poorly studied in freshwater systems, fish schooling behaviour is an excellent example. The composition of fish schools, species-specific schooling tendencies and preferences of adult fish were studied in the pelagic habitat of the Římov Reservoir, Czech Republic. Video recordings captured over a total of 34 days (16 h per day) in the clear water period of three seasons were analysed. From four species identified as school-forming species – bream, bleak, roach and perch, 40% of the individuals observed formed schools of 3–36 individuals. Although conspecific schools prevailed, 20% of individuals formed heterospecific schools, except bleak that schooled strictly with conspecifics. Schools were composed of individuals of similar body size and life strategy. Heterospecific schools were significantly larger than conspecific schools and showed uneven proportion among species, that is, one species being more abundant when the school dimension increased. Probability of encounter in bleak was lowest and proved highest inclination for schooling. Gregarianism levels depended on species morphology and body size, with larger and morphologically advanced fish tending less to sociability. This indicates that the antipredator function of schooling behaviour is intensified with increasing vulnerability of the species.  相似文献

Some patterns of age and geographical variation in fecundity indices were analyzed in three freshwater fishes (river perch, bream, and Sevan khramulya). A trend to increase in the ovarian relative weight and mature egg size with age has been revealed. Two species with a wide range (perch and bream) demonstrated a tendency to decrease in the ovarian relative weight and increase in the definitive oocyte weight in females of populations living in the geographical center of the range. The coefficient of correlation between the absolute individual fecundity and body weight of females was proposed as a population marker of the fish reproductive system.  相似文献

We present morphology, stable isotope signals and stomach contents of Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) from littoral and pelagic habitats in a brackish water embayment in the northern Baltic Proper. Studies conducted in freshwater habitats repeatedly state that littoral perch have deeper bodies than the pelagic ones. In this study we observed the opposite; the perch from the pelagic study site had deeper bodies than the littoral ones, indicating that more factors than habitat structure affect the perch morphology. A possible explanation to this discrepancy is the diet choice; the pelagic perch in this study were more benthivorous than freshwater pelagic perch. Our results on stable isotope signals combined with the stomach contents also shed new light on the dietary preferences of perch. Perch is known to be a generalist predatory fish, but our results indicate that perch have individual diet preferences. Based on our results, it seems that at some point in their lives the perch in brackish water choose between the littoral and pelagic habitats and also specialise in a certain diet. This study shows that the perch morphology and diet in the Baltic Sea coast differ among habitats, but the patterns are not similar to those observed in freshwater studies.  相似文献

We studied the hypothesis that fish play an important role in lake use by ducks (pairs and broods) in boreal lakes. The study was based on densities of different duck and fish species in 28 boreal lakes in southern Finland. We focused on the three most common duck species (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, green-winged teal A. crecca and common goldeneye Bucephala clangula) and on the three most common fish species (perch Perca fluviatilis, roach Rutilus rutilus and pike Esox lucius) in the region. We considered both competitive and predatory interactions between ducks and fish, the perch and roach being potential competitors with ducks and the pike a potential predator of ducks. We found a negative association between green-winged teal brood density and total fish density, the other duck species having only a weak association with total fish density. When the three fish species were considered separately, a negative association, suggesting food competition, was found between perch, green-winged teal and goldeneye, whereas the role of roach as a food competitor seemed to be of minor importance. We did not find any clear signs of predatory effects of pike on ducks. Our results suggest that food competition is a more important factor than pike predation in affecting lake use by ducks in oligotrophic boreal environments in southern Finland.  相似文献

Recruitment areas for freshwater fish are often negatively affected by eutrophication and physical disturbances. Vegetated areas, which are important nursery habitats, are reduced and water turbidity increased. As a method of compensation, we tested artificial substrata for young-of-the-year fish. The structures were made of spruce bundles, with and without surrounding nets, and placed in a hyper-eutrophic very turbid environment and in an undisturbed area with clear water. Both habitats were devoid of submerged vegetation. Young fish abundance in treated areas was compared with adjacent reference sites. In the clear water area, the abundance of all investigated species – perch, pike, bream, silver-bream and roach – was higher in areas with artificial refuges. A similar response was evident for cyprinids in the turbid environment. High abundance of pikeperch and ruffe appeared in the hyper-eutrophic test area. Neither of these species, nor perch, was attracted to the artificial refuges. The lack of response in perch and pikeperch suggests that the importance of structural refuge decreases in very turbid water for these species. Of the two methods tested, spruce bundles with surrounding nets generally attracted most young fish, implying that the nets further increased the refuge capacity by reducing predation risk. The conclusion is that artificial habitats could improve recruitment habitats and that protective devices can increase refuge capacity.  相似文献

The degree to which growth in early life stages of animals is regulated via density‐dependent feedbacks through prey resources is much debated. Here we have studied the influence of size‐ and density‐dependent mechanisms as well as size‐selective predation pressure by cannibalistic perch Perca fluviatilis on growth patterns of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch covering several lakes and years. We found no influence of initial size or temperature on early body size development of perch. In contrast, there was a negative relationship between reproductive output and the length of YOY perch at five weeks of age. However, rather than an effect of density‐dependent growth mediated via depressed resources the relationship was driven by positive size‐selective cannibalism removing large individuals. Hence, given a positive correlation between the density of victims and predation pressure by cannibals, size‐dependent interactions between cannibals and their victims may wrongly be interpreted as patterns of density‐dependent growth in the victim cohort. Overall, our results support the view that density‐dependent resource‐limitation in early life stages is rare. Still, patterns of density‐dependent growth may emerge, but from variation in size‐selective predation pressure rather than density as such. This illustrates the importance of taking overall population demography and predatory interactions into account when studying growth patterns among recruiting individuals.  相似文献

Four small, acidified boreal lakes, all sustaining populations of perch Perca fluviatilis, roach Rutilus rutilus and pike Esox lucius, were studied in four successive years. Three lakes were moderately acidified (mean pH of 5·61-5·83), while the fourth was more acidic (mean pH of 5·16) and had a sparse population of R. rutilus. Perca fluviatilis density was higher in this lake (1004 ha(-1)) than in the other three (355-717 ha(-1)), where R. rutilus dominated in terms of numbers (981-2185 ha(-1)). Large, potentially predatory, P. fluviatilis were most abundant in the lake with clearest water, and these seemed to have a negative effect on P. fluviatilis density. Perca fluviatilis mean mass was negatively correlated with R. rutilus biomass and was highest in the most acidic lake with the sparse R. rutilus and the highest P. fluviatilis density. Perca fluviatilis mass correlated positively with pH in two lakes (with the highest fish biomass), suggesting that low pH affected P. fluviatilis mass negatively. Perca fluviatilis growth correlated positively with summer (July to August) air temperature in the lake with sparse R. rutilus, thus differing from P. fluviatilis and R. rutilus growth in the other three lakes. The mean age of P. fluviatilis was generally lower than that of R. rutilus and was lowest in the two lakes with the highest fish biomass, indicating that adult mortality was affected by density-induced factors.  相似文献

Ectoparasites have been investigated on gills of the ruff, perch, white bream, roach, bream, ide, and European cisco from the Pleshcheevo lake. 13 parasite species were found: Dactylogyrus falcatus, D. distinguendus, D. cornoides, D. cornu, D. sphyrna, D. robustus, D. amphibothrium, Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Argulus foliaceus, Ergasilus sieboldi, Achtheres percarum, Ancyrocephalus percae, and Rhipidocotyle companula. A reliable negative correlation between the number of monogeneans An. paradoxus and the copepods Ac. percarum on the perch. D. falcatus, the specific monogenean of the bream, was found on the roach. The comparison of the obtained data with those of 1939 has shown the decrease of oxyphilic copepods E. seiboldi, that prove the increasing eutrophication.  相似文献

Dwarf individuals are observed in many species of freshwater fish. This paper studies the potential causes of such stunted growth. We present a model which describes the effect of growth conditions on the age- and size-structure of fish populations. The model parameters are chosen to characterize a Eurasian perch population. Two possible causes of stunting are identified: resource limitation and size- or age-dependent survival probabilities. While the former mechanism often arises from intraspecific density dependence, the latter is of particular relevance in the context of interspecific interactions and fishing. After evaluating the immediate ecological consequences of these factors, we examine the potential for life-history adaptations in stunted fish populations. Interactions between the ecological and adaptive mechanisms of stunting are shown to be intricate: not only does the age at maturity of individuals affect their growth trajectories, but, in addition, alterations in growth conditions can result in different adaptively stable ages at maturity. We show that such adaptive responses can either alleviate or amplify stunting caused by ecological factors. Life-history adaptation may also lead to the persistence of stunting when ecological factors alone would allow for normal growth. An appreciation of the interplay between ecological and adaptive factors therefore is critical for understanding the causes and mechanisms of stunted growth. 0+ perch predation on 0+ bream: a case study in a eutrophic gravel pit lake   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
SUMMARY 1. We studied the population dynamics of 0+ fish in a eutrophic gravel pit lake in which predation of 0+ Eurasian perch on other 0+ fish was suspected to influence perch growth and the structure of the fish community, with effects on the lake food web. 2. The adult fish community was dominated by piscivorous species, especially perch, and the 0+ fish community was dominated by perch and bream. Bream grew to a total length of 80 mm between May and the end of August, gradually decreased in numbers during the summer, and completely disappeared in autumn. Stomach analysis revealed that 0+ perch ≥28 mm fed on 0+ bream. 3. The initially unimodal cohort of 0+ perch gradually broadened and became bimodal by the end of July. Fish of the larger, piscivorous cohort grew faster (1.4 mm day?1) than the smaller, zooplankton‐consuming fish (0.6 mm day?1). Although individuals of both cohorts later consumed zooplankton and grew at similar rates (0.5 mm day?1), only perch of the large cohort (mean TL 125 mm) were found by mid‐October. Intraspecific competition for food or cannibalism of older perch may have contributed to the disappearance of the smaller perch. 4. Early piscivory of the fast‐growing 0+ perch apparently resulted in the disappearance of 0+ bream by the end of the growing season and precocious maturation of male perch. In contrast to findings in other studies, these large 0+ perch thus avoided the juvenile bottleneck by switching to piscivory early during their ontogenetic development. 5. The observations of this study suggest that early piscivory of 0+ perch can have a long‐lasting impact on fish communities in eutrophic lakes, particularly if prey fish are abundant and the structural complexity of the lake is low. Furthermore, early piscivory of 0+ perch may help prevent the expected increase in 0+ cyprinids following reduction of adult cyprinids, which is considered important to ensure the long‐term success of biomanipulation experiments.  相似文献

Variations in biomass and maximal biomasses observed are reviewed. Trophic conditions are considered to be the main factor affecting both nonpredatory and predatory benthos abundance. Competition and predation by invertebrates seem to adjust the abundance of nonpredatory benthos to trophic conditions; both of these processes are influenced by fish. We used the widely distributed freshwater fish, perch (Perca fluviatilis), to investigate the postglacial colonization routes of freshwater fishes in Europe. Genetic variability within and among drainages was assessed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop sequencing and RAPD markers from 55 populations all over Europe as well as one Siberian population. High level of structuring for both markers was observed among drainages and regions, while little differentiation was seen within drainages and regions. Phylogeographic relationships among European perch were determined from the distribution of 35 mtDNA haplotypes detected in the samples. In addition to a distinct southern European group, which includes a Greek and a southern Danubian population, three major groups of perch are observed: the western European drainages, the eastern European drainages including the Siberian population, and Norwegian populations from northern Norway, and western side of Oslofjord. Our data suggest that present perch populations in western and northern Europe were colonized from three main refugia, located in southeastern, northeastern and western Europe. In support of this, nested cladistic analysis of mtDNA clade and nested clade distances suggested historical range expansion as the main factor determining geographical distribution of haplotypes. The Baltic Sea has been colonized from all three refugia, and northeastern Europe harbours descendants from both eastern European refugia. In the upper part of the Danube lineages from the western European and the southern European refugia meet. The southern European refugium probably did not contribute to the recolonization of other western and northern European drainages after the last glaciation. However, phylogenetic analyses suggest that the southern European mtDNA lineage is the most ancient, and therefore likely to be the founder of all present perch lineages. The colonization routes used by perch probably also apply to other freshwater species with similar distribution patterns.  相似文献

Changes in the size of the infrapopulations of metacercariae of Diplostomum gasterostei and Tylodelphys clavata were studied in a small lake for a period of seven years in perch Perca fluviatilis . Tylodelphys clavata appeared in the lake at the commencement of the study and its subsequent population increase and changes were typical of those of a species recently established in a new habitat. Population size increased slowly at first, then rapidly, then declined again as population density approached equilibrium level. By contrast, the population size of D. gasterostei declined throughout the study. Two processes were responsible for the decline: a decrease in the proportion of fish carrying heavy infections which was continuous throughout the seven years and a dramatic decline in recruitment rate in young fish during the last two years. In earlier years recruitment rate had changed annually and changes in overall infrapopulation size had largely reflected the recruitment rate two years previously. It was concluded that these two processes were independent of each other and related to changes in the population density of other species of eyeflukes. The decline in the proportion of heavily infected fish was significantly negatively correlated with the increase in population density of T. clavata and the decline in recruitment rate in young fish was coincident with the appearance and infrapopulation increase of T. podicipina metacercariae in the eyes of young perch. It is suggested that these two species interact negatively with D. gasterostei and are currently partitioning the perch habitat between themselves.  相似文献

A recent threat to European fish diversity was attributed to the association between an intracellular parasite, Sphaerothecum destruens, and a healthy freshwater fish carrier, the invasive Pseudorasbora parva originating from China. The pathogen was found to be responsible for the decline and local extinction of the European endangered cyprinid Leucaspius delineatus and high mortalities in stocks of Chinook and Atlantic salmon in the USA. Here, we show that the emerging S. destruens is also a threat to a wider range of freshwater fish than originally suspected such as bream, common carp, and roach. This is a true generalist as an analysis of susceptible hosts shows that S. destruens is not limited to a phylogenetically narrow host spectrum. This disease agent is a threat to fish biodiversity as it can amplify within multiple hosts and cause high mortalities.  相似文献

Biomanipulation measures in the Netherlands are usually a combination of a drastic fish stock reduction and an introduction of pike fingerlings. In three small shallow lakes (Noorddiep, Bleiswijkse Zoom and Zwemlust) these measures resulted in a clear water state and the development of macrophytes. After the measures the fish community developed differently because of the new physical and biological conditions. Results of lake Noorddiep and lake Bleiswijkse Zoom showed that the fish community became more divers. Bream and carp became less dominant and were partly replaced by roach and perch. The importance of the main predator pike-perch was strongly reduced and replaced by pike and perch. The share of piscivorous fish in the total fish stock increased at all sites. The recruitment of young-of-the-year was similar or even higher in the clear overgrown areas than in the turbid water before the measures, but the recruitment of young-of-the-year to older fish differed between the species. Predation by pike and perch could not control the young-of-the-year cyprinids, but their predation may have contributed to the shift from bream to roach, because of selective predation on bream in the open water, while roach was hiding in the vegetation. The macrophytes provide new refugia and feeding conditions that favour roach and perch, but offer relatively poor survival conditions for bream and carp.  相似文献

School fidelity concerns the cohesiveness of social aggregations over time, as measured by the regularity or repeatability with which known individuals re-occur as members of a school. School fidelity was measured by divers who observed yellow perch (Perca flavescens) marked with individually recognizable tags in Cazenovia Lake, New York. Yellow perch were facultative schoolers, with individual differences in schooling tendency (measured as percentage of time in schools) accounting for different numbers of observations of schooled versus solitary fish. The greatest co-occurrence was found between fish with strong schooling tendencies, but within this group co-occurrence was random. Home ranges overlapped greatly between individuals, yet co-occurrence was more a function of schooling tendency than of overlapping home ranges. Individuals with overlapping home ranges but with weak schooling tendencies seldom co-occurred. Home range size increased directly with schooling tendency: the distances that individuals moved apparently depended on the movements of the schools they joined, with strongly schooling fish remaining in schools longer. Individuals joined and left schools frequently; this also reflects a lack of fidelity between fish. Fish schools that form primarily for predator avoidance may show higher levels of fidelity than do schools that form for foraging or hydrodynamic efficiency.  相似文献
