The chemotactic and chemokinetic activities in zoospores of Saprolegnia parasitica NJM 8604 (= H2) were examined using various amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, and fish tissue extracts to estimate one of the important factors for attachment of zoospores to their host. All the tested six amino acids showed strong chemotactic reactions whereas carbohydrates and fatty acids caused moderate or strong chemotactic reactions. The chemokinetic activities against amino acids and carbohydrates were moderate or weak, whereas almost all fatty acids showed negative chemokinetic responses. Almost all tested fish tissue showed moderate chemotactic response and weak or moderate chemokinetic responses. Generally, chemotactic activity was strong in the amino acids, and the strongest activity was observed in alanine. Based on these facts, we considered that zoospores may react against amino acids of the fish body to attach and establish their colonization. Literature related to pool‐type fishways has seen a recent upsurge of interest in the placement of instream structures for improving fish passage. However, there is still no information on how different flow regimes created by boulder placement have an influence on upstream fish movements. The main goal of this study was to assess the performance of two different flow regimes, characterized by the relative depth of flow (d/h), where d is the water depth and h is the height of artificial bottom substrata, in assisting fish passage in an experimental full‐scale pool‐type fishway. Two series of experiments consisting of 20 replicates each and representing distinct flow regimes created by boulder placement in the flume bottom – d/h > 4 (regime 1) and 1.3 < d/h < 4 (regime 2) – were carried out to analyse the proportion and timing of successful upstream movements of a potamodromous cyprinid, the Iberian barbel (Luciobarbus bocagei). Although no significant differences (P > 0.05) in passage success were observed between regimes (55% and 60%, respectively), fish transit time was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in regime 2 (mean ± SD: 2.6 ± 1.6 min.) than in regime 1 (7.1 ± 5.8 min.). The results of these experiments show that lower relative depths can be more beneficial to fish passage because they reduce the transit time for successful negotiation, thus providing a useful indication on how to improve fish passage through pool‐type fishways.  相似文献

Seven groups of fingerling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were fed for 10 weeks on 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% of cassava or rice in isonitrogenous diets.Optimum growth and food utilisation was at 20% dietary cassava. High fibre content of the control diet did not suppress protein digestibility in this group. Rather, at all levels, protein digestibility was good and remained between 84.4% and 87.5%. However, in the control group, carbohydrate digestibility was very poor. The cassava diet which had the highest digestible energy as carbohydrate produced the best growth performance, food utilization and protein sparing. At the levels studied, the dietary carbohydrates produced no hyperglycaemic effect on the fish. There was no evidence of drastic adverse effects on the tissue and liver composition of the fish receiving these carbohydrates.  相似文献

The bioavailabilities of selenium (Se) from Se-rich fish species and Se-rich wheat were compared in a study involving 32 healthy volunteers. Initial serum Se values were 109±16 μg/L (mean±SD). For 6 wk, one group (n=11) included Se-rich bread in their diet, bringing daily average intake of Se up to 135±25 μg/d. Another group (n=11) consumed Se-rich fish daily (average Se intake: 115±31 μg/d), whereas the control group (n=10) ate their normal diet, providing 77±25 μg Se/d. Serum Se increased by 17% (P<0.01), and platelet Se increased by 30% (P<0.01) in the wheat group. Although platelet Se decreased by 11% in the fish group, no changes in serum and platelet Se in the fish or control group reached statistical significance. Glutathione peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.9; GSH-Px) activity in serum and platelets did not change during the study, nor did platelet mercury (Hg) content. Since the dietary intake of Hg, arsenium (As), and fatty acids could not satisfactorily explain the lack of response in the fish group, the results are indicative of low bioavailability of fish Se in humans. At present, wheat Se seems to be the most important factor contributing to the body stores of Se in this study population. Dr. Norheim died on January 9, 1991.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of dietary glycerol on the metabolism of juvenile tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and to determine its metabolic fate. The experimental diets contained 0% (Group CON), 5% (Group G5) and 15% glycerol (Group G15) and were fed for 40 d to apparent satiation, three times a day. For the metabolism trials, six fish from each treatment were randomly chosen and tube-fed with five pellets labelled with 14C-glycerol [14C(U)] in order to evaluate the absorption, catabolism, retention and partition of glycerol in muscle and liver. Group G5 presented the highest 14C-glycerol retention and the lowest catabolism, with no significant differences between Groups CON and G15. In Group CON, the highest percentage of 14C was incorporated in muscle lipids; with no significant differences between Groups G5 and G15. Furthermore, no treatment effects were found for hepatic 14C-lipid and for 14C in hepatic and muscle non-lipid extract. In the non-lipid and non-protein fraction, the highest radioactivity was measured in livers of Group G5, however no significant differences were found for this fraction between Groups CON and G15 in liver and for all treatments in muscle. The results of the present study can have practical implications in diet formulations for tilapia and for other aquaculture species with similar feeding pattern since juvenile tilapia are able to metabolise dietary glycerol into lipids, protein and/or carbohydrates and to use it as energy source.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes may play an important role as a refuge for zooplankton against predators. However, a recent study suggests that their importance depends on the trophic state of the lake. We studied the impact of fish and macrophytes on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans in 56 oligotrophic arctic Greenland lakes. In north-east and western Greenland, zooplankton was sampled in the near-shore (littoral) and central (pelagial) part of all lakes and fish were sampled with multiple mesh-sized gill nets. Macrophytes were visually estimated in the littoral. In north-east Greenland, 5 taxa of cladocerans were found, while 14 taxa were recorded in western Greenland. Daphnia pulex occurred only in fishless lakes in both northeast and western Greenland and avoided the near-shore areas in the shallow and deep lakes. Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial in the deep and shallow fishless lakes. However, their near-shore density was lowest in the presence of fish. Macrophyte-related and benthic cladocerans concentrated either in the littoral or were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial, irrespective of depth and fish presence or absence. Macrophytes had no impact on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans. Thus, it is concluded that horizontal heterogeneity of Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum might be affected by the presence of fish.  相似文献

The biochemical composition of muscle, liver and stomach contents of a detritivorous fish Prochilodus lineatus was analysed and compared to settling particles and sediments along pollution gradients over 1500 km of the Río de la Plata Basin to evaluate the effects of anthropogenic discharges in a detritus food chain. The stomach contents of P. lineatus collected in the polluted Metropolitan Buenos Aires coast were enriched in proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, similar to settling particulates collected in the sewer area, and two to five times higher than underlying sediments, supporting the interpretation that P. lineatus feeds on unconsolidated organic flocs freshly decanted from mixed industrial and sewage outfalls. Fish from Buenos Aires had consistently higher standard length (LS) and mass (MT) slopes (b = 3·5), condition indexes (K = 3·01 ± 0·47, mean ±s.d .) and muscle fat content (fat = 23·8 ± 13·8% wet mass, mean ±s.d .) relative to northern fish (b = 2·7, K = 2·22 ± 0·39, fat = 3·4 ± 3·2% wet mass, respectively), suggesting that sewage‐derived organic matter was an enriched diet, which allowed an enhanced body mass gain and fat accumulation compared to organic‐poor vegetal detritus in the north Paraná area. Buenos Aires fish also showed higher hepato‐somatic indices (mean ±s.d . IH 1·41 ± 0·49 v. 0·70 ± 0·32, respectively), which correlated with their two to three orders of magnitude higher hydrocarbon and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) loads, suggesting an enhanced detoxifying metabolism. The northward migration of fatty P. lineatus was evidenced by the presence of clear outliers in the LS and MT relationship, K and fat content along the Paraná River.  相似文献

Aims: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the usefulness of lectin obtained from Talisia esculenta (TEL) seeds as a tool to recognize and study Microsporum canis. For this purpose, we investigated the antifungal and marker action of this lectin and the relationship of these effects with the presence of carbohydrates on the structure of this fungus. Methods and Results: The in vitro antifungal activity of TEL was analysed by broth microdilution assay. In addition, TEL was assessed against the arthroconidia present on hairs obtained from infected dogs and cats. The affinity of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)‐labelled TEL for macroconidia and arthroconidia of M. canis was also tested. The effects of TEL on the growth of the M. canis strains began with 0·125 mg ml?1, and 100% inhibition was obtained with a concentration of 2 mg ml?1. The addition of carbohydrates, especially N‐acetyl‐glucosamine and d ‐mannose, inhibited these antifungal effects. TEL was able to inhibit the growth of arthroconidial chitin‐rich forms of M. canis obtained from hairs of infected animals and strains cultured in Sabouraud agar. FITC‐labelled TEL efficiently marked macroconidial and arthroconidial forms of M. canis, as shown by fluorescent microscopy. Conclusions: These results show that the inhibitory effects of TEL on M. canis growth may be related to the interaction of lectin with the carbohydrates present at the micro‐organism’s surface, mainly d ‐mannose and N‐acetyl‐glucosamine. Significance and Impact of the Study: Talisia esculenta can be used as an important tool in the biochemical study of M. canis or as a molecule to recognize this dermatophyte in infected tissue.  相似文献

Mass spawning of corals provides a large seasonal pulse of high-energy prey that potentially benefits reef fish that are capable of capturing and digesting coral propagules. This study examines the range of fish species that consume coral propagules and also tests whether reef fish experience a significant increase in physiological condition when feeding on coral propagules. Thirty-six species of diurnal reef fish were seen to consume coral propagules released during mass coral spawning. Stomach content analyses of three reef fish species (Pomacentrus moluccensis, Abudefduf whitleyi, and Caesio cunning) revealed that both P. moluccensis and A. whitleyi feed almost exclusively on coral propagules during mass coral spawning. Fish feeding extensively on coral propagules also amassed considerable lipid stores, which could greatly improve the quality and survivorship of their progeny. In contrast, C. cunning consumed only very small quantities of coral propagules, and showed no detectable change in lipid stores during the course of the study. This study provides the first direct evidence that reef fish benefit from mass coral spawning, and reveals a potentially significant trophic link between scleractinian corals and reef fish. Densities and species composition of predators could affect morphological defences, larval development and the timing of emergence of their prey. To address this issue we studied the morphology and life history of an ephemerellid mayfly, Ephemerella invaria, from two streams in a deciduous forested drainage basin in central New York. Both streams contained predatory fish, but densities and species composition of fish differed. A field survey provided evidence that Ephemerella inhabiting a stream with 10 fish species and high relative densities of fish emerged several weeks earlier and at smaller sizes than Ephemerella inhabiting a nearby tributary with ~2 fish species and low relative densities of fish. However, the two populations of mayflies showed no differences in defensive morphology or growth rates. In laboratory rearing experiments, we exposed Ephemerella larvae from these two locations to fish chemical cues or control water (no fish) over 2 months to test whether differences in life histories could be attributed to fish. Fish cues induced faster larval development, but also smaller size of mature Ephemerella individuals from both high and low predator locations. Although shorter development times in more dangerous environments could increase larval survival, smaller size of females results in a fecundity cost associated with this life history shift. Consistent with the field studies, laboratory rearing experiments revealed no effects of fish cues on Ephemerella's morphological defences. These data suggest that variation in the density or species composition of predators may favour the evolution of developmental plasticity to reduce mortality in the larval environment.  相似文献

A 12‐week feeding trial was undertaken to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of marine raw materials in the diet with soybean meal and beef tallow on growth and product quality of European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Based on growth, feed efficiency and chemical composition, soybean meal was found to be an unsuitable ingredient for eel diets as a substitute for fishmeal (25% on a protein basis), probably because of the low digestibility of its carbohydrate content. However, beef tallow can be used to replace 50% of fish oil without reduction in growth, provided that digestible carbohydrates are present in the diet. No major effects of protein and lipid sources in the diet were found on fillet chemical composition. Sensory analysis revealed no significant differences between fish fed the control and the experimental diets, with the exception of salty taste which was significantly higher in fish fed combined soybean meal and beef tallow compared with fish fed the control diet.  相似文献

Gut microbiota play a fundamental role in the nutrition of many vertebrate herbivores through foregut and hindgut fermentation of plant carbohydrates. Some species of marine herbivorous fishes contain moderate to high levels of short-chain fatty acids in the hindgut, indicating the importance of hindgut fermentation. Herbivorous fish hindgut microbiota are diverse and can vary with geographic location, but data on the scale of geographic variation involving a few km of separation are limited. Here, we used the 16S rRNA gene to describe community composition of the gut microbiota of the herbivorous species Kyphosus vaigiensis and K. cinerascens collected in the vicinity of Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia, in 2011 and 2017. Microbiota community structure differed between posterior hindgut sections, host species, sampling years and two mid-shelf and outer reef locations approximately 20 km apart. Hindgut bacterial community composition varied remarkably between mid-shelf and outer reef locations, and among individual fish on the mid-shelf reef. In both fish species, the most abundant phyla were Pseudomonadota, Bacillota and Bacteroidota, followed by Spirochaetota, Thermodesulfobacteriota and Verrucomicrobiota. There were no clear differences between the host species in terms of the relative abundance and composition of bacterial genera in outer reef samples. In contrast, the dominant genera differed between mid-shelf samples of K. cinerascens and K. vaigiensis, being Endozoicomonas-like (Pseudomonadota) and Brevinema (Spirochaetota), respectively. Endozoicomonas are emerging as important symbionts in many marine hosts worldwide and are thought to be important in the coral sulphur cycle. Differences in microbiota composition were not associated with variation in fish condition, suggesting that the different microbial taxa perform equivalent functional roles.

Clove oil can be used as an anaesthetic in the handling of marine and freshwater fish. Few studies report on its use for periods up to 48 h, for example, under long‐distance transport conditions. This study tested the effect of different clove oil concentrations for 1–48 h on recovery and survival of the cichlid Haplochromis obliquidens, an ornamental fish species endemic to Lake Victoria. Haplochromis obliquidens were anaesthetized for 1 h using 5–25 μl L?1 clove oil. There was no correlation between clove oil concentration and post‐anaesthesia recovery time (P = 0.15). On average, fish recovered within 9.5 ± 2 min, and no fish died within 24 h after recovery. Results from exposure of fish to 18–20 μl L?1 clove oil for up to 48 h suggested a narrow margin of safety as this concentration range induced mortality. At 18 μl L?1 recovery times ranged from 3 to 43 min between 24 and 36 h exposure, while fish exposed longer than 36 h recovered within 1–10 min, or within 1–2 min after 44–48 h. At the end of a 48‐h transport experiment total ammonia levels were higher in transport water containing anaesthetized fish than for non‐anaesthetized fish (1.65 ± 0.19 and 0.54 ± 0.08 mg L?1 NH + NH3, respectively). The combined use of clove oil and the selective ammonium ion exchanger zeolite was considered feasible as ammonia levels could be reduced by up to 82% compared to control bags without zeolite.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate life-history reactions of Daphnia to trimethylamine (TMA), a substance, which has recently been found to induce a similar phototactic reaction in Daphnia as fish kairomones. The effects of different treatments (control, fish kairomone and TMA) on the life-history traits of five clones of D. magna and one clone of D. galeata and D. hyalina, respectively, were studied. Only D. magna exhibited significant reactions to TMA and to fish kairomone. D. galeata showed no significant responses to either TMA or to fish kairomone. D. hyalina reacted to the fish treatment with two traits (size and number of eggs at maturity). The comparison of the reaction norms to TMA and fish kairomone demonstrated that the directions of some responses to both factors were similar but were different for others such as for size at maturity. TMA resulted in a larger size at maturity in D. magna, whereas fish kairomone had no significant influence on this trait. We, therefore, conclude that trimethylamine is not the primary causative chemical agent in fish induced life-history adaptations in Daphnia.  相似文献

Summary Leaves and litter of two phanerogams (Acaena magellanica (Lam.) Vahl and Poa flabellata (Lam.) Hook. f.) were collected in spring on the subantarctic island of South Georgia. Leaves immersed in water lost up to 80% of their total available soluble carbohydrates after 6–8 h. The loss of K+ and PO 4 3- followed a similar pattern to that shown by the carbohydrates. Up to 9 daily freeze/thaw cycles gave no increase in metabolite loss for senescent leaves. GLC analysis showed sucrose to be the principal leachate from Acaena. Sucrose, glucose and fructose were the main leachates from Poa. A significant proportion of the soluble carbohydrates in standing dead leaves was trehalose. The relationship of such leachates to microbial decomposition is discussed.  相似文献

A 2 × 3 factorial study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary lipid level on mitochondrial gene expression in mixed sex rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Practical diets with a fixed crude protein content of 42%, formulated to contain 10% (42/10), 20% (42/20) and 30% (42/30) dietary lipid, were fed to triplicate groups of either low‐feed efficient (F129; mean ± s.d. = 105·67 ± 3·04 g initial average mass) or high‐feed efficient (F134; mean ± s.d. = 97·86 ± 4·02 g) families of fish, to apparent satiety, twice per day, for 108 days. At the end of the experiment, diets 42/20 and 42/30 led to similar fish condition factors, which were higher than that observed with diet 42/10 (P < 0·05). F134 fish fed diet 42/10 showed the highest hepato‐somatic index, while there was no significant difference among all the other treatments (P < 0·05). When the group of F134 fish fed diet 42/10 was used as the calibrator for gene expression analysis, the five genes selected for their involvement in lipid metabolism (complex I‐nd1, complex III‐cytb, complex IV‐cox1, complex IV‐cox2 and complex V‐atp6) were up‐regulated in the muscle and down‐regulated in both the liver and the intestine. There was a significant family × diet interaction regarding nd1, cox2 and atp6 in the liver; nd1, cytb, cox1, cox2 and atp6 in the intestine, and nd1, cytb, cox1, cox2 and atp6 in the muscle (P < 0·05). The overall results of this study constitute basic information for the understanding of molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism at the mitochondrial level in fishes.  相似文献

To better understand the effects of reduced feeding frequency on the GH–IGF-I axis, channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), were either fed (Fed control, commercial diet fed daily), fed every other day (FEOD, commercial diet fed every other day), or not fed (Unfed, no feed). Pituitary GH mRNA increased whereas hepatic growth hormone receptor (GHR), IGF-I mRNA, and plasma IGF-I decreased in the FEOD and Unfed fish (P < 0.05). In another study, fish were either continually fed (Fed) or fasted and then re-fed (Restricted) to examine the physiological regulation of somatostatin-14 (SS-14) and SS-22 mRNA. Fasting increased (P < 0.05) levels of SS-14 mRNA in the hypothalamus and pancreatic islets (Brockmann bodies) at d 30 while re-feeding decreased SS-14 mRNA to control values in all tissues examined by d 45. Fasting had no effect on levels of SS-22 mRNA in the pancreatic islets whereas SS-22 mRNA was not detected in the stomach or hypothalamus. The results demonstrate that feeding every other day has similar negative impacts on components of the GH–IGF-I axis as fasting. The observed increase in SS-14 mRNA in the hypothalamus and pancreatic islets suggests a role for SS-14 in modulating the GH–IGF-I axis in channel catfish.  相似文献

Effect of the low level of copper exposure on nonenzymatic antioxidants was studied in a freshwater fish Channa punctatus (Bloch.). Fish were exposed to cupric chloride at the concentration of 10 ppb for 4 wk (28 d) in a static culture condition. Copper significantly (p < 0.001) increased the serum ceruloplasmin level and total iron-binding capacity. A significant (p < 0.05) increase in reduced glutathione level was recorded in all of the tissues. With regard to nonprotein thiols, copper decreased their level in the liver, but increased it in the gill. The protein-bound thiols remained unaltered except for an increase in the liver. Metallothionein (MT) induction was observed in liver only. Copper exposure had no significant effect on the ascorbic acid level and induced no lipid peroxidation over control values. It is suggested that by modulating the ceruloplasmin level, copper indirectly protects the fish, as it facilitates conversion of pro-oxidant iron to nonoxidant iron. It also induces an array of antioxidants that may be beneficial to fish in the case of oxidative stress resulting from chemical pollutants.  相似文献

We used a transient expression system to study the mechanism by which carbohydrates repress a rice (Oryza sativa L.) α-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1) gene. Exogenously fed metabolizable carbohydrates are able to elicit repression of the α-amylase gene RAmy3D in the rice embryo, and our results indicate that repression is also triggered efficiently by endogenous carbohydrates. Glucose analogs that are taken up by plant cells but not phosphorylated by hexokinase are unable to repress the α-amylase gene studied, while 2-deoxyglucose, which is phosphorylable but not further metabolized, down-regulates RAmy3D promoter activity, indicating a role for hexokinase in the sugar-sensing mechanism triggering repression of the RAmy3D gene. We tested two different hexokinase inhibitors, mannoheptulose and glucosamine, but only the latter was able to relieve RAmy3D promoter activity from repression by endogenous carbohydrates. This correlates with the higher ability of glucosamine to inhibit the activity of rice hexokinases in vitro. The glucosamine-mediated relief of RAmy3D promoter activity from repression by endogenous carbohydrates does not correlate with a reduced rate of carbohydrate utilization.
