In the present study, the effects of different pretreatment methods for sediments on the performance of sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) were evaluated. Autoclaved (30 and 60 min), and heated (150 °C, 3 h) sediments demonstrated high power density, compared with control and heated (60 °C, 3 h) sediments. An SMFC with heated (60 °C, 3 h) sediment was found to easily form a biocathode. The power density of an SMFC with heated (150 °C, 3 h) sediment was 214 mW m(-2) on day 24. Furthermore, autoclaved (30 and 60 min) and heated (3 h, 60 and 150 °C) sediments accelerated the production of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The DOM in heated (60 °C, 3 h) sediments had larger molecular sizes. The present study demonstrates that SMFCs can have high power density and high loss on ignition removal efficiencies when produced from sediments by suitable pretreatment methods.  相似文献

Mutagenic activity was observed in sediments of the Suimon River bed with and without S9 mix. The direct-acting mutagens in the sediment were investigated. The sediment was extracted with methanol and fractionated on a Silica gel column. The benzene fraction from the Silica gel column exhibited mutagenic activity without S9 mix in strain TA98, while it failed to show mutagenic activity in nitroreductase-deficient strain TA98NR. This observation led to the suspicion that nitro compounds were the direct-acting mutagens of these samples. The benzene fraction was treated by heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA) and investigated with gas chromatography equipped with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD). 2-Nitrofluorene, 4,4'-dinitrobiphenyl, 2,7-dinitrofluorene and 1-nitropyrene were detected and measured quantitatively. The mutagenic activity of a mixture of these compounds was compared with that of the original fraction and the direct-acting mutagenicity of Suimon River sediment can be explained by these nitroarenes, especially 1-nitropyrene.  相似文献

The sediments of Nagara river and its bystreams were extracted with ether. The mutagenicities of the extracts were determined by the Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with S9 mix. The extracts were fractionated on an activated silica-gel column with four kinds of organic solvent, namely iso-octane, iso-octane:benzene (1:1), benzene:ethyl acetate (1:1) and benzene:methanol (1:1). The highest mutagenicity was observed in the iso-octane-benzene fraction of Arata river by using TA100 with S9 mix. Chemical substances in this fraction were identified by GC-MS and GC, and several kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were found. Several peaks were unidentified, but these PAH, especially benzo [b] fluoranthene and benzo [a] pyrene, may contribute substantially to the mutagenicity of this fraction.  相似文献

By means of sequential extractions with Ca-NTA and EDTA, a separation was performed between Fe(OOH) P and CaC03P in a few sediments; the remaining fraction, considered to be organic phosphate, was quantified as well. We found that with the commonly used method of extraction with NaOH and H2S04, less Fe(OOH) P and much more CaC03 P was found than with the chelating extractants. The organic phosphate pool in live and dead algal material and in some mud samples was partly hydrolysed and therefore recovered as inorganic phosphates with classical extractions. Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) are considered to play animportant role in the stabilization of intertidal mudflats. In this study therole of EPS as a binding agent in intertidal sediments was investigated. Forthis purpose two EPS fractions (termed coll-SF and EDTA-SF) wereisolated from intertidal sediment and characterized in terms ofmonosaccharide- and size distribution. In slurry addition experiments thesorption characteristics of these EPS-fractions as well as their effecton sediment properties were examined under varyingCa2+-concentrations. Results showed more EDTA-SFadsorbed to the sediment compared to coll-SF. For both fractions more EPSadsorbed to the sediment when Ca2+-concentrationincreased. This effect was stronger for EDTA-SF. The differences insorption between the two fractions could not be explained in terms ofmonosaccharide- and size distribution, which were largely similar. Theaddition of EPS in the presence or absence of Ca2+ did notalterthe rheology of the sediment slurries indicating that there was no effect ofEPSon the sediment properties. This contradicts results of experiments withbacterial EPS as well as field observations in which the presence ofEPS/biofilms leads to an increase in the erosion resistance of the sediment.Possible causes for this discrepancy in results are discussed.  相似文献

A small pond in southwestern peninsular Florida was sampled to determine the areal and depth distribution of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and organic matter. Concentrations of these constituents decreased from the center to the edge of the pond and from the top to the bottom of the sediments. At the center of the pond total phosphorus showed a secondary concentration peak at a depth of 20 to 40 cm in the sediments indicative of the downward transfer of soluble phosphorus during times of low water.A system of monitoring wells was installed at the pond to measure groundwater input and output nutrient concentrations. There was no difference in total groundwater nitrogen concentration across the pond but the mean increase in total phosphorus concentration between input and output wells, ca. 200 g1–1, was statistically highly significant. The results suggest that whereas nitrogen is recycled from sediments to the pond and the atmosphere, the pond-sediment system loses some phosphorus to groundwater throughflow.  相似文献

1. Invertebrate bioturbation can strongly affect water‐sediment exchanges in aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to quantify the influence of invertebrates on the physical characteristics of an infiltration system clogged with fine sediment. 2. Two taxa (chironomids and tubificids) with different bioturbation activities were studied in experimental slow infiltration columns filled with sand and gravel and clogged with a 2 cm layer of fine sediment at the surface. We measured the effects of each taxon separately and combined on hydraulic head, water mobility and sediment reworking. 3. The results showed that invertebrates could reduce sediment clogging and this effect was linked to the functional mode of bioturbation of each group. Tubificid worms dug networks of galleries in the fine sediment, creating pathways for water flow, which reduced the clogging of sediment. In contrast, the U‐shaped tubes of chironomids were restricted to the superficial layer of fine sediments and did not modify the hydraulic conductivity of experimental columns. The combination of invertebrates did not show any interactive effects between tubificids and chironomids. The occurrence of 80 tubificids in the combination was enough to maintain the same hydraulic conductivity that 160 worms did in monospecific treatment. 4. The invertebrates like tubificid worms can have a great benefit on functioning of clogged interfaces by maintaining high hydraulic conductivity, which contributes to increased water‐sediment exchanges and stimulates biogeochemical and microbial processes occurring in river sediments.  相似文献

Introduction:  The Department of Clinical Chemistry of the General Hospital of Móstoles (Madrid, Spain) has for many years diagnosed the presence of atypical cells in the urinary sediment (ACUS), but this finding only led to a comment in the final report of the urinalysis, informing the clinician of this fact in case he/she decided to perform further studies in these patients.
Methods:  Since 2004, the Clinical Chemistry Department has implemented a new protocol together with the Department of Surgical Pathology of the Hospital, according to which all the urinary sediment samples with ACUS are sent for cytological analysis. In this report, we comment on the results corresponding to 99 samples.
Results:  With this new strategy, we can directly diagnose if the ACUS correspond to a carcinoma or to another process, and this has allowed us to reduce time until diagnosis in our patients and also to avoid unnecessary studies in negative cases. We comment on our results with this new management strategy.  相似文献

Sediment cores were set up to study microbial colonisation and interactions on marine sand grains under enrichment conditions. Cores were enriched with photosynthetic media in the light and dark (PL, PD) and heterotrophic media in the light and dark (HL, HD), and were incubated for 25 days. Sediment chlorophylls were then measured by acetone extraction, viable heterotrophic bacteria by plate counts, and numbers of cells mm–2 sand grain surface by s.e.m. Chlorophyll a occurred in all sediments but was highest in the PL sediment. Bacteriochlorophyll a was only observed in the HL sediment. Heterotrophic viable counts were high in the HL and HD sediments. Dense growth of diatoms and blue-green algae, and a marine fungal Thraustochytrid sp. occurred on PL grains. The blue-green alga Schizothrix was often associated with the diatom Amphora on PL grains. Many different bacteria grew on HL and HD grains and some unusual colony and cell morphologies were recorded (Caulobacter, Flexibacter, polymer strands). Characteristic flakey material sometimes occurred in hollows on grains. The results are discussed in relation to microbial communities in low energy sedimentary environments.  相似文献

A short-core palaeolimnological investigation was undertaken with the aim ofacquiring knowledge of sediment deposition. Analyses of the lithological composition of sediments from the whole-lake basin were performed on the small eutrophic L. Linajärv (northern Estonia) and the concentrations of mineral and organic matter were measured on 647 sub-samples from 14 sediment cores. The accumulation rate of the sediment sequences was established and C/N ratios of organic matter in some cores were recorded. Results indicate that the water depth, basin slopes and distance to the shore have the most important impact on the physical sediment properties. It was shown that variations in the mineral matter concentrations were influenced by the changes in deposition conditions in the areas with steep slopes. The study indicated that more objective information about the sedimentation mechanisms is obtained using analysis of the concentration ratio of mineral and organic matter since it reduces the implied role of diagenetic compaction.  相似文献

利用微宇宙示踪技术,定量研究了天津北塘河口地区的天津厚蟹、沙蚕、泥螺和青蛤4种底栖动物对沉积物的扰动作用.结果表明:生物扰动对沉积物的分布具有明显影响.不同底栖动物扰动能力不同,对表层沉积物的扰动强度(扩散系数,10-3 cm2·d-1)大小依次为:沙蚕(2.95)> 天津厚蟹(1.00)> 青蛤(0.78)> 泥螺(0.35)> 对照(0.05);对深层沉积物则是天津厚蟹(3.10)>沙蚕(2.33)>青蛤(0.28)>泥螺(0.15)> 对照(0.05).这种差异主要与不同底栖动物所属的功能群不同有关.底栖动物体积与表层沉积物扩散系数显著相关(P<0.05),可采用底栖动物体积预测其对沉积物的扰动强度.  相似文献

Accumulations of sediment at the beds of lakes, estuaries and reservoirs provide partial records of materials transported from the surrounding water catchment areas. Physical, chemical, biological and magnetic analyses, with data for accumulation rates, have been used in a range of environmental settings to infer the rate, form, cause and source of erosion. This paper is a brief review of these studies from a hydrological perspective, setting sediment studies within a lake-catchment system. The need for long term erosional records is discussed in terms of the type of erosional data which may be obtained. Alternative approaches to studying short and long term erosion are assessed with regard to their cost-effectiveness and their levels of precision and accuracy. Finally, some suggestions are made about how these erosion records may be used to model hydrological, pedological and geomorphological processes, thus linking together long term, short term and contemporary timescales of process operation.  相似文献

Biodegradation of nonylphenol in mangrove sediment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study investigated the biodegradation of nonylphenol (NP) in mangrove sediments collected at five sites along the Tanshui River in northern Taiwan. NP biodegradation rate constants (k1) and half-lives (t1/2) ranged from 0.039 to 0.139 day−1 and 5.0 to 17.8 days, respectively. The biodegradation of NP was enhanced by the addition of yeast extract, hydrogen peroxide, brij 35, sodium chloride, or cellulose. However, NP biodegradation was inhibited by the addition of humic acid, heavy metals, or phthalic acid esters (PAEs). Of the microorganism strains isolated from the mangrove sediment, we found that strains A9, A10 and A13 (all identified as Bacillus sp.) expressed the best biodegrading ability. NP biodegradation rate constants (k1) and half-lives (t1/2) by the three strains ranged from 0.291 to 0.630 day−1 and 1.1 to 2.4 days, respectively. The highest NP biodegradation rate was found in the sediment with the inoculation containing strains A9, A10 and A13, whereas the sediment without any inoculation had the lowest biodegradation rate.  相似文献

The transport of suspended sediment in mangrove swamps is controlled by three dominant processes. First, the transport processes in the estuaries and coastal waters draining the swamp, including flocculation, tidal pumping, baroclinic circulation, trapping of the smallest particles in the turbidity maximum zone, and the effect of the mangrove tidal prism. Second, the mechanical and chemical reactions in mangrove waters destroying flocs of cohesive sediment in suspension. Third, biological processes have a dominant influence on the ultimate fate of clay particles in mangroves.  相似文献

RNA from Lake Michigan sediment was hybridized with a DNA probe for archaeal 16S rRNA. There was a peak of archaeal rRNA abundance in the oxic zone and another immediately below it. Six contributing species were identified by PCR amplification of extracted DNA with primers specific for archaeal rDNA: two related to Methanosarcina acetivorans and four related to marine crenarchaeotal sequences. rRNA quantification using a DNA probe specific for this crenarchaeotal assemblage showed it is most abundant in the oxic zone, where it accounts for about 10% of total archaeal rRNA.  相似文献
