Summary Crude protein extracts from single seeds of nondomesticated Mexican bean accessions were analysed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for variability in phaseolin protein. Six new phaseolin types; M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, which contained polypeptides within the same range of molecular weights (51,000 to 45,000 daltons) as occur in the S, T and C phaseolin types of cultivated beans were identified. No T and C types were found among the non-domesticated Mexican accessions, and the S type occurred in less than 7% of the seeds screened. Genetic analyses of F2 progenies from crosses between Sanilac (S), and five of the M types showed that each M phaseolin phenotype was allelic to the S type and expressed codominantly.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of resistance to whitebacked planthopper Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) was studied in 21 rice varieties. Reactions of F1; F2 and F3 progenies of the crosses of 21 resistant varieties with the susceptible variety TN 1 revealed that a single dominant gene governs resistance in Mushkan 41, Santhi, Siahnakidar 195, SM2-34, Tirisurkh 251, Zirijowaian 245, 18, 24A, 39, 76 S, 78, 180, 213 B, 267, 293, CI 6037-4, NP97, S39 JKW and Bansphul. In varieties 65 and 274 A, resistance is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. Tests for allelism with the Wbph 1 gene originally identified in N 22 revealed that the dominant gene present in all the test varieties is the same as Wbph 1. Further studies are required to determine the allelic relationships of the recessive gene found in varieties 65 and 274 A.  相似文献

The content of abscisic acid (ABA) in bulbs of two Allium wakegi Araki cultivars, Kiharabansei No. 1 (dormant type) and Ginoza (nondormant type), was similar and changed similarly during the development and storage of the bulbs. It increased during bulb development, reached a maximum shortly after bulb harvesting, and gradually decreased during bulb storage. The bulbs of Kiharabansei No. 1 showed dormancy correlated with the change in ABA content, but those of Ginoza did not show significant dormancy throughout the experimental period. The ABA content in the buds of dormant bulbs of Kiharabansei No. 1 did not change after planting of bulbs, but that of nondormant bulbs of Ginoza planted on the same day rapidly decreased after planting. Application of ABA to bulbs delayed sprouting of both cultivars, but dormant bulbs of Kiharabansei No. 1 had higher sensitivity to ABA than the bulbs of Ginoza or the bulbs of Kiharabansei No. 1 partly released from dormancy. These results suggest that the decrease in the ABA content after planting (watering) and low sensitivity to ABA are correlated with the nondormancy of Ginoza.  相似文献

A simple method for stimulating and maintaining high in vitro multiplication of Narcissus shoot clump cultures was developed. Shoot clumps were subjected either to normal cutting where leaves were trimmed to 20 mm in length at the beginning of each culture passage or to severe cutting where shoot clumps were cut down to the basal plate region removing all green tissue. Severe cutting at the beginning of each culture passage initially doubled the leaf multiplication, compared to normal cutting, but the difference between cutting treatments declined in successive passages. The improvement in leaf multiplication was maintained when shoot clumps were subjected to severe cutting only at every other culture passage, with no cutting in the alternate recovery passages. Wind illness is a very common complaint among the Northern Thai, yet is rarely recognized by Thai physicians trained in biomedicine. Persons most susceptible to wind illness are adult women who have ever borne a child. Consequently, data were obtained from 415 everparous women, 43% of whom reported ever having had wind illness and 57%, never having had it. In addition, 20 individuals who had ever had the syndrome were followed for case study, and 13 indigenous healers who traditionally treat clients suffering wind illness were interviewed. Their perceptions of the etiology, symptomatology and treatment of wind illness are reported in Part I. Part II is an attempt to define wind illness in terms of biomedicine and as a consequence of fertility. Part III synthesizes the emic and etic accounts with explanations for the perdurance of wind illness despite the advances of biomedicine and the recent fertility decline in Northern Thailand.  相似文献

Summary Thirty-one toria genotypes were compared with three well-established cultivars, Ludhiana Composite-2, K-1 and TCSU-2 (standard testers). The genotypes, which were almost identical to a standard tester in response to environmental variations and which also had other desirable characteristics, were considered to be acceptable for commercial cultivation. Using this criterion, TCSU-7, TH-5 and TH-4 were found to be acceptable for commercial cultivation. TH-4 and TCSU-7 were found superior to TH-5 if r2 can be considered as a measure of the agronomical manipulations expected in environmental variations.  相似文献

Involvement of ABA in postharvest life of miniature potted roses   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Exogenous application of ABA (abscisic acid) to intact miniature potted rose plants (Rosa hybrida L.) resulted in deterioration of postharvest quality of two cultivars. Spraying with ABA increased leaf drop and accelerated flower senescence in Vanilla and Bronze, while bud drop was only induced in Bronze. Application of ABA to detached rose flowers accelerated their senescence, indicating that the observed senescence promoting effect was not a secondary response resulting from ABA-induced leaf senescence and abscission. ABA-treatment increased ethylene production in Bronze flowers, while no ethylene production was measured in flowers of Vanilla, or in the leaves of both cultivars. Pre-treatment with 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) delayed ABA promoted flower senescence in Bronze, suggesting that the effect of ABA is at least partly mediated by ethylene. The senescence promoting effect of ABA on leaf drop and flower life of Vanilla flowers was not counteracted by 1-MCP pre-treatment. The cultivar Vanilla had a low ABA level at all flower stages, while ABA content of the Bronze petals was high in buds, lower in open flowers, and increased during flower senescence. An increased ABA content after ethylene treatment in Vanilla suggests that ethylene, natural or exogenous, can increase ABA levels of flowers.  相似文献

This paper outlines a widely-held conception of illness, related to perceived changes in body temperature — Chills and Colds on one hand, Fevers on the other — in an English suburban community on the outskirts of London. The relationship between this folk model, and that of the local family physicians is analysed, to show how biomedical treatment and concepts, particularly the germ theory of disease, far from challenging the folk model, actually reinforce it. Remedies which cannot be scientifically and biomedically justified are nevertheless prescribed by the physicians to meet their patients' need to make sense of biomedical treatment in terms of their folk model of illness. At the interface between physician and patient, biomedical diagnoses and treatment are more negotiable than previously realised — and this has important implications for the delivery of health care.  相似文献

Summary The genetics of submergence tolerance in rice was studied in a 10 × 10 half-diallel cross set involving 10 lowland rice varieties, four of which were tolerant (FR13A, FR43B, Kurkaruppan, and Goda Heenati) and the remaining six were nontolerant (RD19, IR42, IR17494-32-1, IR19672-24-3, Jagannath, and CR1009). Estimates of genetic parameters following Hayman's method showed significant additive and nonadditive gene action and the latter appeared to be solely due to dominance. Narrow sense heritability (0.70) indicated that additive gene effects were more important in the inheritance of the trait. Tolerance was dominant over nontolerance and the average dominance was within the range of incomplete dominance. Dominant alleles were more concentrated in the three tolerant parents, FR13A, Kurkaruppan, and FR43B in that order. Wr/Vr graphic analysis suggested the involvement of both major and minor genes. Combining ability analysis by Griffing's method also indicated significance of both additive and nonadditive effects, and the former appeared to be more important than the latter. The hybrids involving FR13A with RD19, IR42, and IR17494-32-1, and those of Kurkaruppan with RD19 and CR1009 appeared to be promising for incorporating an adequate level of tolerance to submergence into lowland rice cultivars.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in 1989 to evaluate selected converted sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) accessions for resistance to whorl-stage feeding by larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) and to determine the mechanism of resistance. The sorghum was infested in the whorl 26 days after planting (DAP) in experiment 1 and 33 DAP in experiment 2. In experiment 1, the plant accessions IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, IS12678C, and IS12679C were more resistant (rating <3) to damage by S. frugiperda larvae than the resistant check CIMMYT (CM) 1821 (rating 6.2) at 14 days after infestation (DAI). These genotypes were also more resistant (ratings 4 at 7 DAI and <3 at 14 DAI) than the resistant check CM1821 (ratings 5.6 at 7 DAI and 8 at 14 DAI) in experiment 2. The number of larvae that established/plant on IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, or IS12679C was significantly less compared with establishment on the resistant check CM1821 at 14 DAI in experiment 1 and at 7 and 14 DAI in experiment 2. Resistance in IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, and IS12679C was mainly due to their rapid rate of growth which induced a quick change in the plant morphology from the whorl- to the panicle-stage and did not permit a sustained colonization of larvae. This new type of resistance could be referred to as morphological non-preference as apposed to chemical non-preference where non-preference is due to plant chemical factors. These genotypes had a significantly shorter cycle than the other sorghum genotypes. Host evasion, a type of pseudoresistance, was the basis for resistance in IS7794C and IS7947C. Tolerance was the major mechanism of resistance in the resistant check CM1821.  相似文献

The organogenetic potential from callus of three tomato land races from the Canary Islands adapted to semi-arid environment (Salvaje, Rusa and Especial), and one tomato cultivar (Meltine), were examined. The response of four explant types (cotyledon, shoot apex, hypocotyl and root) to nine PGR regimes (BAP at 1 or 2 or 5 mg/l) + either IAA (0.5 mg/l) or 2,4-D (0.5 or 1 mg/l) were measured. BAP at 5 mg/l+IAA at 0.5 mg/l induced most organogenesis in all the explant types for all genotypes. Summary Human and rabbit masticatory muscles were analyzed immuno-and enzyme-histochemically using antibodies specific to cardiac , slow and fast myosin heavy chain isoforms. In human masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscle cardiac myosin heavy chain is found in fibres that contain either fast, or fast and slow myosin heavy chain. In rabbit masseter, temporalis and digastric muscles, fibres are present that express cardiac myosin heavy chain either exclusively, or concomitantly with slow myosin heavy chain or fast myosin heavy chain. Our results demonstrate a much broader distribution of cardiac myosin heavy chain than hitherto recognized and these might explain in part the specific characteristics of masticatory muscles. The cardiac myosin heavy chain is only found in skeletal muscles originating from the cranial part of the embryo (including the heart muscle) suggesting that its expression might be determined by the developmental history of these muscles.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of resistance to brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stol.), of 20 rice cultivars was studied. Single dominant genes that are allelic to Bph 3 condition the resistance in cultivars Ptb 19, Gangala (Acc. 7733), Gangala (Acc. 15207), Horana Mawee, Kuruhondarwala, Mudu Kiriyal and Muthumanikam. Single recessive genes that are allelic to bph 4 govern the resistance in cultivars Gambada Samba, Heenhoranamawee, Hotel Samba, Kahata Samba, Kalukuruwee, Lekam Samba, Senawee, Sulai, Thirissa and Vellai Illankali. The resistance in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala, and Sinna Sivappu is governed by one dominant and one recessive gene which segregate independently of each other. The dominant resistance genes in these cultivars appear allelic to either Bph 1 or Bph 3. Similarly, the recessive genes in these cultivars seem allelic to either bph 2 or bph 4. Further investigations are needed to conclusively determine the allelic relationships of resistance genes in Ptb 33, Sudu Hondarwala and Sinna Sivappu.  相似文献

Summary Tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) of four varieties (Badischer Burley, White Burley, Techne, Kupchunos) were raised at different temperatures and daylengths and the effect of genotype on embryogenic pollen grain formation in situ and on pollen plant formation in anther and pollen cultures from these plants was studied. Genotype controlled embryogenic pollen grain and pollen plant formation by defining productivity under standard growth conditions (long days at 24 °C). Kupchunos was the most productive variety, followed by White Burley, Techne, and Badischer Burley. Furthermore, genotype defined which environmental factor was able to affect embryogenic pollen grain and pollen plant formation and also to which degree. In anther cultures, in addition to these effects, genotype controlled the formation of (an) inhibitory substance(s) in the anther wall in interaction with the plant growth conditions. In Badischer Burley and Techne, inhibitor action could be prevented by isolation of the pollen after one week of anther culture. Finally, direct pollen cultures in Badischer Burley and Techne produced embryos were only when the pollen was isolated from nearly mature anthers, while in White Burley and Kupchunos, embryos also produced at earlier stages and at higher yields. This indicated that genotype controls the time when the embryogenic pollen grains become ready to divide. The results are discussed in relation to strategies to overcome recalcitrance of species and genotypes.  相似文献

Summary Human gastrectomy specimens, including 48 carcinomas and 25 selected benign cases showing extensive intestinal metaplasia (IM), were examined in detail histologically and histochemically. IM was classified into complete (type I), incomplete without sulphomucins (type IIA) and incomplete with sulphomucins (type IIB). Type IIB was associated with intestinal but not diffuse cancers (P<0.01) or benign lesions (P<0.01). The mucin profiles of IIB IM were similar to intestinal cancers with sulphomucins predominating overN-acetylsialomucins.O-acetylsialomucins were not seen in IIB IM or tumours but were observed in complete or type IIM. These findings suggest a histogenic link between incomplete IM secreting sulphomucins (or colonic metaplasia) and intestinal cancers of the human stomach.  相似文献

Summary The subunit composition of glutenin was analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis using two varieties of contrasting pedigrees. Maris Widgeon, a variety of good bread-making quality, was shown to contain 2 glutenin subunits not present in Maris Ranger, a much higher yielding variety that is unsuitable for making bread. A third subunit was only found in Maris Ranger glutenin. To determine if any of these subunits are directly related to bread-making quality, 60 randomly-derived F2 progeny from a Maris Widgeon x Maris Ranger cross were analysed for bread-making quality and for glutenin subunit composition. A strong correlation was demonstrated between the presence of one of the two subunits inherited from Maris Widgeon, and quality. This subunit (termed subunit 1 glutenin) had an approx. mol. wt. of 145,000. It was also found in Maris Freeman, a bread-making variety selected from the same cross previously made in 1962. In further crosses involving Maris Widgeon or its descendants, more bread-making varieties have been produced in the last decade at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge and all but one have inherited glutenin subunit 1. The subunit has been traced back through Holdfast to White Fife, a Canadian hard spring wheat of excellent breadmaking quality. Some 67 varieties were screened for the presence of glutenin subunit 1 and it was found in 31% of them. Several unrelated varieties of good bread-making quality did not contain subunit 1 glutenin.  相似文献

Bragg and Cobb soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds were germinated in sand at temperatures ranging from 25 to 40°C. Emergence decreased with increasing temperature above 37°C, with virtually no emergence at 40°C. Emergence of 12 other cultivars at 38°C ranged from 25 to 95%. Foster and Coker 338 were more sensitive to high temperature than the other cultivars.  相似文献

Delicious apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and several of its strains, which have been difficult to root in vitro, were successfully propagated with rooting percentages up to 100%. The combination of treatments used to achieve this result included placing the shoots on rooting medium in the dark at 30°C for the first week of the rooting stage, then moving them to a regime of 16 hr light-8 hr dark at 25°C. The rooting medium contained half strength Murashige and Skoog salts plus 1.2 M thiamine HCl, 0.56 mM myo-inositol, 1 mM phloroglucinol (PG), 1.4 M indolebutyric acid (IBA), 1.3 M gibberellic acid (GA3), 87.6 mM sucrose, and 7 g l–1 Difco Bacto agar. Dark treatment applied during the proliferation stage (etiolation) was less effective than one applied at the beginning of the rooting stage. The optimum length of dark treatment during rooting was 4 to 7 days. Increasing the temperature from 25°C to 30°C improved rooting of Delicious, Royal Red Delicious, and Vermont Spur Delicious in the absence of PG but generally had less effect in the presence of PG. Further increase in temperature to 35°C stimulated rooting of Royal Red Delicious but reduced rooting of Vermont Spur Delicious. Transfer of the cuttings to auxin-free medium after 1 week had no effect on percentage rooting and increased the number of roots per cutting for only 1 of 4 cultivars tested and then only in the presence of PG. In general PG stimulated rooting of Delicious and its strains, but had no effect on Golden Delicious.  相似文献

As tested progeny have never been obtained, breeding studies on African yams (Dioscorea cayenensisrotundata) are scarce. We report here the first progenies checked by isoenzyme markers. This was made possible by the choice of well-known genitors [one male (cv Zrezrou) and three females (cvs Sopéré, Dahomey and C 20)] and special hybridization conditions. Six enzymatic systems [esterase (EST), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH), and phosphoglucoisomerase (PGI)] were used to check the progenies and detect outbreeding. Despite the small number of progeny, it was possible to provide information on the genetics of the isoenzymatic systems.  相似文献

Summary Thirteen spontaneously occurring chlorophyll deficient phenotypes have been described and their genetic basis was established. Ten of these — white, white tipped green, patchy white, white virescent, white striping 1, white striping 2, white striping 4, fine striping, chlorina and yellow virescent showed monogenic recessive inheritance and the remaining three — yellow striping, yellow green and light green seedling phenotypes showed digenic recessive inheritance. The genes for (i) white tipped green (wr) and yellow virescent (yv) and (ii) patchy white (pw) and white striping 1 (wst 1) showed independent assortment. Further, the genes for white (w), white tipped green (wr) and yellow virescent (yv) were inherited independently of the gene for hairy leaf margin (Hm).In the mutants — white tipped green, patchy white, white striping 1, white striping 2, fine striping, chlorina, yellow virescent, yellow striping, yellow green and light green phenotypes total quantity of chlorophyll was significantly less than that in the corresponding controls, while in white virescent there was no reduction in the mature stage. For nine of the mutants the quantity of chlorophyll was also estimated in F1's (mutant x control green). In F1's of six of the mutants — white tip, patchy white, chlorina, yellow virescent, fine striping and yellow striping the quantity of chlorophyll was almost equal to the wild type. In the F1's of three of the mutants — white striping 1, white striping 2 and light green an intermediate value between the mutant and wild types was observed. In yellow virescent retarded synthesis of chlorophyll, particularly chlorophyll a was observed in the juvenile stage. Reduced quantity of chlorophyll was associated with defective chloroplasts. In the mutants — white tipped green, white virescent, fine striping, chlorina, yellow striping, yellow green and light green defective plastids were also observed. In patchy white secondary destruction of chlorophylls and the presence of defective plastids were found to be associated with reduced chlorophyll quantity at maturity.Paper chromatographic studies of leaf flavonoids revealed some variation between the inbreds, but there were three common spots, 7, 8 and 9, except for PDP in which the spot 8 was absent. Chlorophyll deficient mutants differed from their respective controls in the absence of one or more of the spots present in the controls and in the presence of new spots in some of the mutants.Most of the chlorophyll mutants showed higher survival rate in the Kharif season than in Rabi season which was attributed to the higher mean day temperature and longer day light period in the Kharif season than in Rabi season.  相似文献
