In natural plant communities, reproductive allocation can be affected by complex interactions among abiotic resources, species competition and plant size. This topic was addressed using a variety of designed mixed stands of five species (Carex elata, Carex flava, Lycopus europaeus, Lysimachia vulgaris and Mentha aquatica) under four abiotic conditions to investigate how competition and abiotic resources influence the reproductive allocation of one of the five species, C. flava. The plant mixtures varied systematically in both the relative abundance of the five species and the absolute density, and were each established with two levels of water and nutrients. In total, 176 mixtures were maintained for two growing seasons in large pots in an experimental garden. Reproductive allocation of C. flava increased from 6.8% to 9.7% under high nutrient application; however, for both nutrient levels, reproductive allocation was independent of shoot mass (size-independent allocation). Under low competition, reproductive allocation of C. flava decreased as its shoot mass increased, indicating a relatively high investment in vegetative structures under higher light availability. However, under strong competition, the allocation pattern changed and a constant reproductive allocation for different plant sizes was observed. Different water levels did not influence the shoot mass, seed mass or reproductive allocation of C. flava, indicating that the species was not stressed under dryer conditions. When under competitive pressure, however, the species responded with reduced shoot and seed production under more favourable water conditions. This behaviour indicates a trade-off between the ability to tolerate stress and the competitive and reproductive response of C. flava. In conclusion, C. flava was adversely affected by competition with some of the species, and competition, mediated by plant size, indirectly affected reproductive allocation. C. flava was able to modify its allocation pattern depending on the available resources and retained its reproductive allocation even under unfavourable conditions for varying plant sizes, which is interpreted as an advantageous reaction to greater competition pressure. Estimation of root distributions in natural systems remains challenging due to the difficulties in excavation and easy breakage of fine roots. Identifying lateral fine root distribution is necessary to determine the potential exploitation of spatially and temporally variable nutrient supplies that characterize most arid ecosystems. We estimated this potential by taking field measurements of lateral root distribution of the small herbaceous perennial Cryptantha flava (A. Nels.) Payson using 15N-enriched nutrient solutions wicked into the soil at various distances from study plants. Leaves were subsequently harvested from these plants and analyzed for N isotopic ratios. C. flava plants were capable of N uptake at distances of greater than 1.0 m from the outer edge of their aboveground canopy. The considerable lateral root neighborhood area of C. flava increases the amount of spatially variable N that is exploitable in these low-N soils. The ability to acquire spatially variable N and rapidly translate N uptake into photosynthetic carbon gain are traits that aid C. flava in maintaining its position as a successful subordinate competitor in a community dominated by larger, woody perennials.  相似文献

A method for the successful uptake of two triethylamines, 2-(4-chlorophenylthio)-triethylaminehydrochloride (CPTA) and 2-(4-ethylphenyloxo)-triethylamine(EPOT), by flowers of Hemerocallis flava (yellow day-lily) andby sepals of Strelitzia reginae is described. CPTA is more effectivethan EPOT in causing lycopene accumulation which appears tobe through a different mechanism in the two plants studied.Whereas inhibition of cyclase(s) may account for lycopene accumulationin H. flava, this is not so in S. reginae. The permeabilityof the cell wall to the triethylamines may be one of the reasonsfor the differences observed. Measurements were made using GC/MS SIM1 of the effects of temperatureon cis,trans-ABA levels in developing ovules and embryos oftwo pea genotypes contrasted in seed size. These effects werethen related to differences in the growth of the pods, seeds, embryos, and testae. In both genotypes high temperatures hastenedthe onset and rate of logarithmic and then linear growth, greatlyshortening the duration of pod and seed development but withoutgreatly altering seed size. Cis,trans-ABA was most concentratedxin the ovules immediately after fertilization. It also accumulatedin the embryo, more rapidly in the larger-seeded line, duringseed maturation. The stage when accumulation in the embryo beganwas the same irrespective of temperature. Accumulation ceasedwhen the pods started to desiccate. The effects of differentconstant temperatures on the maximum levels of embryo cis,trans-ABAwere relatively small and confounded in one genotype by variationin ovule abortion and in the other by differences in the stagewhen cis,trans-ABA accumulation ceased. However, when plantswere transferred from 13 °C to 29 °C at two differentstages during seed maturation, further seed growth was greatlyinhibited coincident with a substantial increase in embryo cis-trans-ABA.The results suggested a role for cis,trans-ABA in the controlof cotyledon enlargement during the linear phase of seed growth.  相似文献

Reconstructing the phylogeographic patterns of widely distributedand common freshwater mussel species (Bivalvia: Unionidae) mayprovide insight into unionid evolution and speciation. The Wabashpigtoe, Fusconaia flava, is currently recognized as a single, polytypic species that is widely distributed and common throughoutthe Mississippi River drainage and parts of the Canadian Interior,Great Lakes and Gulf Coast drainages. Sequence analysis of themitochondrial COI gene revealed two divergent (3.43%) clades.Clade A consisted of specimens located throughout the upperand lower Mississippi River drainage and in the Red River (Canada)and Lake Erie drainages and all F. cerina specimens. All haplotypeswithin clade A differed by three (0.55%) or fewer nucleotidesubstitutions from the most widely distributed and abundanthaplotype, F1. Clade B, consisting of specimens located in thefar western portion of the species' range, may comprise an undescribedspecies. There was no evidence of genetic differentiation amongF. flava inhabiting headwater and intermediate-sized river localitiesof the Muskingum River system and large river localities ofthe nearby Ohio River. The divergence among F. flava haplotypescomprising clade A (0.18–1.10%) was similar to the divergencebetween the F. cerina haplotypes and the F. flava haplotypescomprising clade A (0–1.10%). This study illustrates theimportance of accessing genetic diversity across the distributionof a polytypic species. Additional analyses based on a combinationof morphology and genetics are needed to determine the taxonomicstatus of clade B and to strengthen our understanding of therelationship between F. flava and F. cerina. I examined the spatial patterns of seed dispersal and postdispersal seed predation of the semidesert perennial Cryptantha flava (A. Nels.) Payson (Boraginaceae) at two sites in north-eastern Utah. Most flowers mature only one seed (nutlet) which is permanently retained within a pubescent calyx. The calyx and enclosed seed abscise from the plant as a unit. These dispersal units are effectively dispersed by wind as evidenced by the highly directional seed shadows and the long distances some of them travel (up to 31.3 m). Potential seed predators at the sites include five species of rodents, of which Peromyscus maniculatus is the most common, and two species of ants, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis and an undescribed species of Conomyrma. There were no strong spatial patterns of postdispersal seed predation. More seeds were removed from dishes placed at the bases of fruiting adults than from dishes ≥ 1.0 m away in one of three experiments. More seeds were removed from under shrubs or clumps of grass than in the open in one of four experiments. After 3–4 days, there was a consistent tendency for more seed removal from high density (75 seeds per .25 m2) quadrats than from low density (75 seeds per 6.25 m2) quadrats, but the difference was not always significant. There was a similar nonsignificant difference between high- and low-density quadrats exposed for 21 days. The pubescent calyx greatly discourages seed predation by ants, and probably also reduces predation by rodents. In addition, by increasing the surface area of the dispersal unit, the calyx may facilitate dispersal by wind.  相似文献

Introgression of germplasm from wild to cultivated species ofArachis is severely impeded because abortion processes oftenoccur as a prepeg-, peg-(gynophore), or postpeg-elongation event.A comparative study of embryo sac morphology at anthesis wasundertaken to determine if observable differences were presentthat could possibly explain abortion prior to peg tip swellingfollowing soil penetration. Two wild Arachis species (A. duranensisand A. stenosperma) plus A. hypogaea cultivars NC 6 and Argentinewere studied. Differences in starch grain concentration andcytoplasmic stranding organization were observed between A.hypogaea cultivars and the wild Arachis species. These differencesprobably have a significant impact on energy availability atsyngamy and the subsequent early cell division of the embryo. An improper energy balance could contribute to the onset ofabortion in interspecific hybrids. Modification in egg apparatusorganization among all species was also observed which may accountfor low percentages of seed recovery resulting from interspecifichybridization attempts. Exogenous application of cytokinin to raceme tissues of soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merr.) has been shown to stimulate flower productionand to prevent flower abortion. The effects of these hormoneapplications have been ascertained for treated tissues, butthe effects of cytokinins on total seed yields in treated plantshave not been evaluated. Our objectives were to examine theeffects of systemic cytokinin applications on soybean yieldsusing an experimental line of soybeans, SD-87001, that has beenshown to be highly sensitive to exogenous cytokinin application.Soybeans were grown hydroponically or in pots in the greenhouse, and 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) was introduced into the xylem streamthrough a cotton wick for 2 weeks during anthesis. After theplants had matured, the number of pods, seeds per pod, and thetotal seed weight per plant were measured. In the greenhouse, application of 3.4 x 10-7 moles of BA resulted in a 79% increasein seed yield compared with controls. Results of field trialsshowed much greater variability within treatments, with consistent, but non-significant increases in seed number and total yieldsof about 3%. Data suggest that cytokinin levels play a significantrole in determining total yield in soybeans, and that increasingcytokinin concentrations in certain environments may resultin increased total seed production. Desert species respond strongly to infrequent, intense pulses of precipitation. Consequently, indigenous flora has developed a rich repertoire of life-history strategies to deal with fluctuations in resource availability. Examinations of how future climate change will affect the biota often forecast negative impacts, but these—usually correlative—approaches overlook precipitation variation because they are based on averages. Here, we provide an overview of how variable precipitation affects perennial and annual desert plants, and then implement an innovative, mechanistic approach to examine the effects of precipitation on populations of two desert plant species. This approach couples robust climatic projections, including variable precipitation, with stochastic, stage-structured models constructed from long-term demographic datasets of the short-lived Cryptantha flava in the Colorado Plateau Desert (USA) and the annual Carrichtera annua in the Negev Desert (Israel). Our results highlight these populations'' potential to buffer future stochastic precipitation. Population growth rates in both species increased under future conditions: wetter, longer growing seasons for Cryptantha and drier years for Carrichtera. We determined that such changes are primarily due to survival and size changes for Cryptantha and the role of seed bank for Carrichtera. Our work suggests that desert plants, and thus the resources they provide, might be more resilient to climate change than previously thought.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation in radulae has been studied in severallittorinid species because of this organ's intrinsic relationshipwith diet and, consequently, with the environment. In this work,we compared the radulae of the Brazilian species Littorariaflava found in mangroves and on rocky shores. Individuals ofL. flava showed marked differences in the shape of the cuspsamong samples from rocky shore and mangrove. In a transfer experiment, the shape of the radula changed within 40 days. A differentresponse was observed in individuals transferred to mangrove, where two different phenotypes were found, suggesting eitherintrapopulational variation in the responses to change of environmentalconditions, or that some snails showed a slow reaction to theenvironmental changes. The alterations could be attributed toecophenotypic plasticity. Analysis of variance showed that thelength of the radula in L. flava was strongly influenced bythe substrate (F6,22=17.13, P<0.000), but apparently notby the transfer experiment. Summary Physical, nutritional and defensive qualities of seeds differ in the extent to which they influence granivore preference. In a study aimed to quantifying those differences, Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii) were found to prefer the seeds of just three of twenty-nine species: Cryptantha crassisepala, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Salsola kali. Oryzopsis hymenoides was most preferred during the early plant growth season (April–July); preference for S. kali peaked during late (August–November) and dormant (December–March) seasons; and greatest preference for C. crassisepala occurred during dormant and early seasons. Regression of forage ratios, averaged across seasons, against seed length, mass, abundance, patchiness, percent nitrogen, energy content, and chemical defenses showed seed length to be the most important predictor of seed preference. Seed length combined with nitrogen (protein) content and levels of two defensive compounds, saponins and non-protein amino acids, to account for 68% of the variation in seed preference. The importance of seed length rather than biomass indicated that there are limits to the ability of D. ordii to detect small seeds and that small size facilitated escape of dispersed seeds. Seasonality in preference suggested, however, that seed escape was encountered by predispersal harvesting of newly maturing seeds still on plants. Maximization of protein intake contradicted previously published observations, but presumably reflected low nitrogen availability. In addition to small size, the presence of saponins or non-protein amino acids in seeds was sufficient to negate the positive influence of higher protein content.  相似文献

The adverse effect of lodging on grass seed yield may be attributed,in part, to assimilate limitation during the seed filling period. This investigation examined plant dry matter assimilate partitioningand seed yield as affected by lodging in three species thatare closely related but phenotypically different: tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreber.), Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.), and perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.). Studies wereperformed in field plots at Corvallis, Oregon, USA. Seed yieldcomponents (seed number per inflorescence, seed yield per inflorescence, and single seed mass) and leaf, stem (lower, middle, and peduncle)and seed inflorescence dry mass were measured just prior toanthesis to seed maturity. Dry mass and water soluble carbohydrates(WSC) were determined for shoot components. The reduction indry mass and WSC in leaves and stem components following anthesiswas often greater in lodged plants compared to upright plants. The relatively low seed yield depression in lodged tall fescuesuggested a higher compensation potential for partitioning reserveassimilate from leaves and stems to support seed growth anddevelopment. This potential does not appear to be present tothe same degree in Italian ryegrass and to an even lesser extentin perennial ryegrass. These findings suggest that the potentialto compensate for reduced assimilate supply during the periodof high assimilate demand by seeds may be attributed, in part,to the total assimilate reserve accumulated prior to photoassimilatereduction caused by the lodged condition. Question: How can we disentangle facilitation and seed dispersal from environmental heterogeneity as mechanisms causing spatial associations of plant species? Location: Semi‐arid savanna in the Kimberley Thorn Bushveld, South Africa. Methods: We developed a two‐step protocol for the statistical differentiation of association‐promoting mechanisms in plants based on the Acacia erioloba–Grewia flava association. Individuals of the savanna shrub G. flava and the tree A. erioloba were mapped on four study plots. Disentangling the mechanism causing the association of G. flava and A. erioloba involved tests of three spatial and one non‐spatial null model. The spatial null models include homogeneous and heterogeneous Poisson processes for spatial randomness based on the bivariate spatial point patterns of the four plots. With the non‐spatial analysis, we determined the relationship between the canopy diameter of A. erioloba trees and presence or absence of G. flava shrubs in the tree understorey to find whether shrub presence requires a minimum tree canopy diameter. Results: We first showed a significant positive spatial association of the two species. Thereafter, the non‐spatial analysis supported an exclusion of environmental heterogeneity as the sole cause of this positive association. We found a minimum tree size under which no G. flava shrubs occurred. Conclusions: Our two‐step analysis showed that it is unlikely that heterogeneous environmental conditions caused the spatial association of A. erioloba and G. flava. Instead, this association may have been caused by seed dispersal and/or facilitation (e.g. caused by hydraulic lift and/or nitrogen fixation by the host tree).  相似文献

An account is given of the elysiid sacoglossans collected ondiving expeditions to the eastern Mediterranean shores of Yugoslaviaand Greece during the period 1978–1986, supplemented bymaterial collected around Naples and some preserved specimensfrom other Mediterranean localities. In all, 6 species of Elysiaand 1 of Bosellia were investigated, including one new to science,E. gordanae from the Yugoslav Istrian Peninsula. The enigmaticElysia translucens Pruvot-Fol, 1957 was found in the easternbasin for the first time. The presence of the Bermudan, CanaryIslands and Jamaican E. flava Verrill, 1901 was confirmed inthe Greek Ionian and Aegean Seas, as well as in the Gulf ofCorinth. The geographical ranges of the other species were extendedby these collections from the eastern basin. The 7 elysiid specieswere illustrated from life and the radulae compared; great differencesin the size, shape and denticulation of the teeth of the differentspecies were evident (Received 8 May 1987;  相似文献

Changes in seed quality (assessed by potential longevity, i.e.the value of the seed lot constant K1 of the seed viabilityequation) in three contrasting cultivars of rice (Oryza sativaL.) were monitored during seed development and maturation intwo temperature regimes, viz 28/20°C and 32/24°C (12/12h), provided by controlled environments. Mass maturity (definedas the end of the seed-filling phase) varied only between 18and 20 d after 50% anthesis. In five of the six treatment combinationsmaximum potential longevity was not achieved until 12-19 d aftermass maturity. In contrast, the maximum potential longevityof seeds of a japonica rice cultivar produced in the warmerregime was obtained in the first harvest after mass maturity. After mass maturity, the potential longevity of the japonicarice seed lots produced in the warmer environment was much lessthan that for the cooler environments. Maximum potential longevitywas also consistently greater in the cooler than the warmerregime for the two indica cultivars, although the differencein K1 was small (0·3-0·5). The deleterious effectof increase in temperature on seed quality development was notdetected until after mass maturity. Maximum potential longevityin the cooler regime was greatest in the glutinous indica (K1= 3·9) and least in the japonica cultivar (K1 = 3·1).It is concluded that the japonica cultivar is not as well adaptedto warm seed production regimes as the indica cultivars. Consequently, subject to confirmation, this research suggest that the seedproduction of japonica cultivars for long-term genetic conservationshould be undertaken, whenever possible, in warm temperate environments.Copyright1993, 1999 Academic Press Oryza sativa L., rice, genebanks, seed development, seed storage, seed longevity, temperature  相似文献

In this study, I analyzed time-course of embryo abortion, positional bias in seed maturation and maternal costs of seed packaging in Cercis canadensis. While basal embryos experience similar rates of abortion as those in other positions during the first week of development, abortion rates peak during the second week. Head start in resource sequestration by stigmatic embryos may explain high rates of basal embryo abortion. Similar seed packaging costs and seed mass for single and multi-seeded pods suggests that maternal parent regulates pod size in accordance with seed numbers per pod investing equally in the surviving offspring. Competition during early developmental period results in the abortion of less competitive embryos allowing for optimal resource investment.  相似文献

We investigated whether partial self-sterility inCalluna vulgarisresultsfrom abortion of selfed offspring owing to inbreeding depressionor a late-acting self-incompatibility mechanism, and whetherself-pollen interferes with normal functioning of cross-pollen.Self-pollination resulted in 75% less seed set than cross-pollination.Self-pollen tubes reached ovaries and penetrated ovules as oftenas those of cross-pollen. Following self-pollination, examinationof the size of undeveloped seeds showed that at least 70% resultedfrom ovule fertilization and arrest of development occurredat various stages. All self-pollinated plants produced seedsand self-fertility varied among plants. These results indicatethat the reduced seed set observed in self-pollination is morelikely the result of inbreeding depression rather than a late-actingself-incompatibility system. The fecundity component of inbreedingdepression was high (0.762). Seed set was reduced by an averageof 40% when self-pollen was mixed with cross-pollen, comparedto pure cross-pollination. Using genetic markers, we found about20% of seeds resulted from self-pollination in mixed-pollinatedfruits.C. vulgarisis likely to experience self-pollination innature and our data suggest this will reduce the number of ovulesthat might otherwise mature after cross-pollination.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company Calluna vulgaris(heather), self-pollination, pollen tube, ovule fertilization, early inbreeding depression, pollen interference.  相似文献

The longevity and desiccation tolerance of samples of seedsof a japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.) harvested serially duringdevelopment from plants grown in two temperature regimes, viz28/20 °C and 32/24 °C (12/12 h) were determined. Massmaturity (defined as the end of the seed-filling phase) occurred19·7 and 18·3 d after 50% anthesis, respectively.Longevity (determined at 40 °C with 15% moisture contentand quantified by the value of the constant Ki of the seed viabilityequation) improved during seed development and maturation until17 and 14 d after mass maturity in the cooler and warmer regimes, respectively, but declined thereafter. Changes in Ki with timewere similar in the two environments until mass maturity, butthe increase in Ki values after mass maturity was much greaterin the cooler regime. Tolerance of desiccation to low (4%) moisturecontents improved until 22 and 14 d after mass maturity in thecooler and warmer regimes, respectively, when maturation dryinghad reduced seed moisture contents naturally to 24 and 32% moisturecontent, respectively. Further delays to seed harvest reduceddesiccation tolerance, particularly in the warmer environment.Comparison among 15 samples of seeds harvested at differenttimes in the two environments showed a strong correlation (r= 0·947, P < 0·01) between longevity (Ki) anddesiccation tolerance (to 4% moisture content). Hence, it issuggested that the regulation of desiccation tolerance to lowmoisture contents and potential air-dry longevity during seeddevelopment and maturation determined here may have a commoncause.Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press Oryza sativa L., rice, desiccation tolerance, genebanks, seed development, seed longevity, temperature  相似文献
