Total bacterial numbers in different strata of lake water and in inlet and outlet streams have been recorded during a yearly cycle. A calculated mean cell volume of 0.342 µm2 has then been used to estimate bacterial biomass in the lake. Change of biomass during the year was substantial and the range was from about 0.1 g · m–3 to about 1.0–1.2 g · m–3. The seasonal development included a spring-early summer increase followed by a decrease to the minimum in July–August. Correlation between epi- and hypolimnion was high and in both strata two dominant autumn peaks in biomass appeared. With the exception of the last autumn peak the development of bacterial biomass was closely related to development of phytoplankton biomass and production.  相似文献

The activity of acid phosphatases was followed for one year in Lake Gårdsjön as well as in the inlet and the outlet of the lake. A budget of the phosphatases was calculated, including an estimation of the production of phosphatases. The phosphatase activity was also measured in two basins upstream of L. Gårdsjön: the north basin and the south basin of L. Stora Hästevatten.The acid phosphatase activity was very high compared with reported alkaline phosphatase activities in other lakes. About 95% of the phosphatases in L. Gårdsjön was produced in the lake, and the production was highest in early summer.Small Chrysophyceae (< 10 µm) probably produced the majority of the acid phosphatases in the investigated lakes, and accordingly could be favoured in environments with low phosphorus supply due to their ability to produce large amounts of phosphatases.  相似文献

Lake Zwemlust (area 1.5 ha, Zm 1.5 m) has been the object of an extensive limnological study since its biomanipulation involving removal of planktivorous fish (bream) in March 1987 and emptying of the lake. In the subsequent summer period of 1987 the Secchi depth increased to the lake bottom (2.5 m), compared withca 30 cm in the earlier summers. The reaction of submerged macrophytes to improving under-water light climate was rapid. In summer 1987, besides the introducedChara globularis, 5 species of submerged macrophytes occurred and colonized 10% of the lake area. In 1988 and 1989 only quantitative changes were observed; new species did not appear, but the area colonized by macrophytes increased by 7 and 10 times, respectively.Elodea nuttallii was dominant among the macrophytes andMougeotia sp. among the filamentous green algae. Their abundance, contributed to transient N-limination of phytoplankton causing a persistent clear water phase in 1988 and 1989, unlike in 1987 when zooplankton grazing contributed chiefly to the water clarity. The River Kolbäcksån system is located in a historical mining and steel works district of central Sweden. Ten years ago, intensive limnological studies indicated that the sediments in many of the lakes of this system were contaminated with metals and oil (grease). More recently a very high toxicity was found in the sediments from some of these lakes in tests with Daphnia magna and Tubifex tubifex. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicity to Daphnia magna of surficial sediments from representative locations (N = 39) within this system of lakes and to look for possible correlations with concentrations of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) and oil (total) analysed in parallel samples. These results were also compared with spiked sediment toxicity data generated for these metals and with the bottom fauna at 8 of the 39 locations. Among the metals analyzed, only Cd, Pb and Zn were correlated with whole sediment toxicity. Only for Zn and Cr did the maximum concentrations approach those that were toxic in the spiked sediments. Correlations using single and combined metal contamination and toxicity (additive models) explained 16% of the sediment toxicity (r 2 = 0.16; N = 39). Significant correlations with the bottom fauna in situ (gross abundance, biomass and species richness) were found for whole sediment toxicity, but not for metal contamination (N = 8). The use of the sediment quality triad approach for assessment of sediment quality is exemplified with a numerical normalization procedure for the latter 8 sites.  相似文献

Sulphur dioxide in air as well as dry deposition of sulphur dioxide to a forest has decreased by a factor of 20 during the last two decades. It was earlier found that the internal circulation of calcium in Norway spruce follows the dry deposition of sulphur dioxide. The sulphur and calcium fluxes from 1992 were calculated from wet deposition, throughfall and a surrogate surface. Earlier fluxes from 1981 to 1991 were calculated using assumptions of the dry deposition of non-marine sulphate and calcium. The new estimates confirm the earlier studies that the internal circulation of calcium in a coniferous forest is directly related to the dry deposition of sulphur dioxide to the canopies and that the internal circulation of calcium decreases at the same rate as the deposition of sulphur decreased during the last two decades. The deposition fluxes were also compared to run-off and uptake of calcium in the forest as well as on modelled weathering rates from severely acidified forested catchments near the coast and inland and the soil pool. A reconstruction of changes in the soil pool of calcium over the last 100 years indicate that the soil pool has decreased by ca. 70% in catchments with complete harvest of the forest and ca. 40% if branches and needles are left on the ground. In a natural forest without acid deposition the soil pool of calcium would have increased by 6%. Estimates for the 21st century show that harvesting of stems+branches and needles may almost empty the soil pool of calcium in the next 100 years. Increased nitrogen deposition has increased forest growth, which indirectly increased uptake of calcium by the trees and indirectly caused a further decrease of the soil pool of calcium.  相似文献

Climate change is predicted to lead to an increase in extreme rainfall and, in coastal areas, sea-salt deposition events. The impacts of these two climatic extremes on stream hydrochemistry were separately evaluated via a novel watering manipulation at the Gårdsjön experimental catchment, SW Sweden. In summer 2004, a 2000 m2 hillslope draining to a defined stream reach was brought to a high-flow hydrological steady state for a 9 day period by sustained addition of ‘clean’ water using a distributed sprinkler system. Marine ions were then added, to generate a realistic ‘sea salt’ episode. A remarkably well constrained hydrological response was observed, such that a simple two-compartment mixing model could reasonably well reproduce observed conservative tracer (chloride, Cl) measurements, and 78% of added water was recovered in runoff. Stream base cation concentrations and acidity responded predictably to clean water and sea-salt addition, with the former leading to an increase in pH and acid neutralising capacity, and the latter to episodic acidification through hydrogen ion and aluminium displacement from soil exchange sites by marine base cations. Anion responses were less predictable: water addition caused a flush of nitrate, but this was apparently independent of rainfall composition. Sulphate remained near-constant during clean water addition but declined sharply during sea-salt addition, indicative of a strong, pH-dependent solubility control on leaching, presumably adsorption/desorption in the mineral soil. Most strikingly, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were stable during clean water addition but varied dramatically in response to sea-salt addition, exhibiting a strong negative correlation with Cl concentrations in water draining the organic soil. These observations provide a robust experimental verification of the hypothesis that deposition chemistry, through its influence on acidity and/or ionic strength, has a major influence on DOC leaching to surface waters.  相似文献

During the past century, Lake Tåkern and Lake Krankesjön, southern Sweden, have shifted repeatedly between a state of clear water and abundant submerged vegetation, and a state of turbid water and sparse vegetation. Long-term empirical data on such apparently alternative stable state dynamics are valuable as complements to modeling and experiments, although the causal mechanisms behind shifts are often difficult to identify in hindsight. Here, we summarize previous studies and discuss possible mechanisms behind the shifts. The most detailed information comes from monitoring of two recent shifts, one in each lake. In the 1980s, L. Krankesjön shifted to clear water following an expansion of sago pondweed, Potamogeton pectinatus. Water clarity increased when the pondweed was replaced by characeans. Zooplankton biomass in summer declined and the concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was reduced to half the previous level. The fish community changed over several years, including an increasing recruitment of piscivorous perch (Perca fluviatilis). An opposite directed shift to turbid water occurred in Lake Tåkern in 1995, when biomass of phytoplankton increased in spring, at the expense of submerged vegetation. Consistent with the findings in L. Krankesjön, phyto- and zooplankton biomass increased and the average concentration of TP doubled. After the shift to clear water in L. Krankesjön, TP concentration has increased during the latest decade, supporting the idea that accumulation of nutrients may lead to a long-term destabilization of the clear water state. In L. Tåkern, data on TP are inconclusive, but organic nitrogen concentrations oscillated during a 25-year period of clear water. These observations indicate that intrinsic processes cause gradual or periodic changes in system stability, although we cannot exclude the possibility that external forces are also involved. During such phases of destabilization of the clear water state, even small disturbances could possibly trigger a shift, which may explain why causes behind shifts are hard to identify even when they occur during periods of extensive monitoring.  相似文献

L. Vörtsjärv is a eutrophic lake in Central Estonia. The area of the lake is 270 km2, the average depth only 2.8 m. The biological productivity of the lake is rather low. Twelve to fifteen years ago the main fish were ruff and perch (80–90% of catch), while the numbers of valuable fish were small. At the same time the total catch of fish was relatively high — about 300 tons a year. Attempts were made to reduce the numbers of undesirable fish by intense trawl-catch but no marked results were achieved. Subsequently trawl-catch was ended, elvers were regularly introduced into the lake and protection of valuable fish was improved. At the present time the total catch of fish has decreased (184 tons in 1979), but pike-perch and eels are now the main game fish (50–60% of catch) and the value of the catch of fish has risen 2–3 times.  相似文献

People in urban areas frequently use parks for recreation and outdoor activities. Owing to the complexity of the outdoor environment, there have only been a few attempts to understand the effect of the thermal environment on people's use of outdoor spaces. This paper therefore seeks to determine the relationship between the thermal environment, park use and behavioural patterns in an urban area of Sweden. The methods used include structured interviews, unobtrusive observations of the naturally occurring behaviour and simultaneous measurements of thermal comfort variables, i.e., air temperature, air humidity, wind speed and global radiation. The thermal environment is investigated through the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) and the predicted mean vote (PMV) index. The outcome is compared to the subjective behaviour and thermal sensation of the interviewees. It is found that the thermal environment, access and design are important factors in the use of the park. In order to continue to use the park when the thermal conditions become too cold or too hot for comfort, people improve their comfort conditions by modifying their clothing and by choosing the most supportive thermal opportunities available within the place. The study also shows that psychological aspects such as time of exposure, expectations, experience and perceived control may influence the subjective assessment. Comparison between the thermal sensation of the interviewees and the thermal sensation assessed by the PMV index indicates that steady-state models such as the PMV index may not be appropriate for the assessment of short-term outdoor thermal comfort, mainly because they are unable to analyse transient exposure.  相似文献

Seventeen ostracod species were recorded from Lake Gölköy (Bolu, Turkey) between January 2000 and December 2001. Limnocythere inopinata is a new record for the Bolu region. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) explained 73% of the correlation between species and environmental variables, suggesting that the occurrence of many species is temporally variable, and is related to seasonal changes in physico-chemical conditions. The four most frequently occurring cosmopolitan ostracod species (Candona neglecta, Darwinula stevensoni, Physocypria kraepelini, and Cypridopsis vidua) accounted for more than 70% of the species recorded. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and redox potential were the most affective variables on the species occurrence. Two species (C. vidua, I. bradyi) were positively correlated to redox potential, while such a correlation was negative for P. kraepelini. The most frequently occurring species C. neglecta was most closely related to the changes in redox potential, whereas C. vidua and D. stevensoni showed a positive correlation to water temperature. Negative strong correlation (p<0.01) was found between pH and I. bradyi, but correlation was positive and weak for C. vidua. Some species (e.g. L. inopinata) showed no clear relationship with any of those environmental variables. UPGMA clustering of species based on their occurrence in different ecological conditions revealed three main species assemblages. Analysis of species phenology using the ‘Ostracod Watch Model’ showed that temporal patterns of occurrence could be similar among species with similar ecological preferences. The current status of the lake is discussed based on the present study.  相似文献

Atmospheric acidification brought about the extinction of several species of planktonic Crustacea in lakes of the Bohemian Forest (?umava, Böhmerwald). The recent reversal in chemical parameters of lake water towards pre-acidification values raises the question whether the return of missing species is possible. We have designed a bioassay to test water from different lakes for the survival of Daphnia longispina, which inhabited the lakes under study but disappeared from those most affected by acidification. The bioassay showed the best survival in water from Ple?né Lake, one of those where Daphnia and Cyclops became extinct. A large-scale experiment was conducted by transplanting Daphnia longispina (Crustacea, Cladocera) and Cyclops abyssorum (Crustacea, Copepoda) from Prá?ilské Lake, where they have survived until the present, to Ple?né Lake. One year later, a successful reintroduction was confirmed for Cyclops abyssorum.  相似文献

Phosphorus content in sediment, water and tissues of three macrophyte species growing in Myall Lake, Australia were studied from January to November, 2004. The sites investigated were North–West (NW), North–East (NE), South–West (SW) bays and Central deep area of the lake (CL). The objective of this study was to investigate how total phosphorus (TP) in plant tissues relate to phosphorus pools and the role played by the aquatic macrophyte species under investigation in phosphorus recycling in the lake. Of the four investigated sites of the lake, TP in plant tissues were significantly higher in North–West and South–West bays compared to the rest. Najas marina had significantly higher TP content (e.g., 1.55 and 1.44 mg/g dw.; P < 0.05) for NW and SW respectively, than the other two species. N. marina is a rooted macrophyte while charophytes (C. fibrosa and Nitella hyalina) are pseudo-rooted macrophytes. Total phosphorus in the sediment and water column were significantly higher in Central deep area of the lake compared to the other three bays (P < 0.05, n 5). Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) in sediment pore water correlated significantly with phosphorus content in the tissue of N. marina ( ; ) as well as TP in sediment (␣ and ). Using the two-compartmental uptake model, it was observed that, sediment was the main compartment through which Ni. hyalina obtained phosphorus while for the other two species, water column was the uptake route for the phosphorus. These correlations suggest that, water column and sediments are important pathways for phosphorus uptake in plants.  相似文献

Biomass development and vertical distribution of a Chlamydomonas population in a small humic forest lake was followed by daily sampling in May-June, 1984. Chlamydomonas dominated the phytoplankton spring bloom, forming 71% of the maximum phytoplankton biomass on 18 May. In early May the outflow rate was high and during the 24 hour period when the maximum rate of surface runoff was recorded (8–9 May), 43% of the Chlamydomonas biomass was flushed out of the lake, which delayed the onset of biomass increase. When surface runoff had slowed down Chlamydomonas biomass started increasing and during wax of the population most cells were < 10 µm in diameter. Population maximum lasted for one day (18 May) and there-after Chlamydomonas biomass decreased towards the end of the study. During wane of the population most cells were > 10 µm in diameter.  相似文献

Several thousand lakes have been limed inNorway and Sweden during the last threedecades. Most fishless lakes are stocked withsalmonid game fish after liming, predominantlybrown trout (Salmo trutta). Thecombination of intensive anthropogenic stockingand improved natural reproduction possibilitiesin brooks and rivers often leads to denselypopulated lakes and excess fish planktivory.Another major fish species in southern Norway,Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis),exhibits strong numerical increases afterliming, and within a short period of time thelakes harbor dense and often stuntedpopulations. The cladoceran zooplanktoncommunity was used as a diagnostic tool forstudying fish status, patterns and processes oflakes in the present area. Systems that werelimed before all fish species were lost, andbefore major dominance shifts had taken placewithin the invertebrates, recovered morequickly. Recovery periods are severelyprolonged in strongly disturbed, chronicallyacidified ecosystems. The control of fishabundance in optimal human resource managementof limed lakes is a delicate balance betweenthe necessity to suppress potentialinvertebrate predators and fish competitorssuch as corixids and chaoborids, and to avoidover-exploitation of the planktonic and benthiccommunities. If the combined watershed and lakesystem does not naturally produce sub-optimalspawning and recruitment possibilities, eitherfor brown trout or Eurasian perch, resulting insmaller populations, chances are high that thesite will lose its attraction as a fishingobject due to overpopulation. This should be amajor field of concern both for the ecology ofthese lakes and their resource management bythe fishery and environmental officials.  相似文献

Cyclops vicinus is the only copepod species in the pelagic zone of Lake Søbygård and can be found there all year round. We studied the population dynamics of this copepod over a one-year period. In contrast to earlier studies we included the copepods in the pelagic zone as well as the copepods resting in the sediment. Cyclops vicinuswas found not only in the open water, but also in the sediment throughout the year. From the fluctuations of the abundances in both habitats we suggest that the life cycle is more complex than known so far: different diapause pattern appear within the population and the induction of diapause is different than in other populations. We assume that these features contribute to the predominance of C. vicinusin Lake Søbygård.  相似文献

A pollen record from a small alder carr located in the centre of aFagus stand near the hamlet of Flahult in southern Småland has shown thatFagus became established in a semi open cultural landscape about 900 B.P. Human disturbance seems to have controlled the local establishment ofFagus at this site through an expansion of pastoral farming. TheFagus dominance in the present stand seems to be of recent origin, asFagus pollen percentages and influx values have increased considerably only during the last 50 years. The modern composition and structure of theFagus stand are probably an effect of changes in land-use and decreased human activity at the end of the last century. Today, only occasionalPicea individuals occur in the studied stand, andPicea does not appear to have been more abundant in the recent past. The regional expansion ofPicea has probably occurred during this century and has been favoured by modern forestry during the last 50 years.  相似文献

A metric analysis on hulled barley grain from the Iron Age regional centre of Uppåkra and surrounding sites in southern Sweden has identified a variation in the size of the grain found on these archaeological sites. Large, high-quality grain was found more frequently at Uppåkra when compared to sites in the surrounding area, where smaller grain was more frequent. The observed large grain found at Uppåkra was, however, restricted to only a few house contexts, including hall-buildings, while other contexts on the site, such as areas dedicated to craft production, had barley assemblages containing smaller grain, similar to the size range found on the surrounding sites. The intra-site variation between different contexts at Uppåkra points to a degree of sorting for larger grain and that this variation between grain assemblages was the result of selection after the crop processing was completed. The distribution of grain size at Uppåkra shows a pattern that indicates that the high-quality barley grain was indented for specific individuals or households. The different contexts at Uppåkra have together produced a record spanning the first millennium ad, representing almost the whole existence of the site. The evidence for selection of larger grain can be seen in the hall-buildings throughout most of the first millennium ad, although less prominently during the Late Roman Iron Age (ad 200–400), while during the Migration Period (ad 400–550) several houses on the main site Uppåkra had assemblages of large grain size. The distribution of grain size at the regional centre Uppåkra shows a pattern that indicates that the handling of large high-quality barley grain was part of a spatial organization, and such organization is similar to other functions observed on the site. The long-term record of grain size patterns across time shows that a structure for handling grain was already in place during the early phase of the settlement and that it remained for centuries. This study indicates that the affluence otherwise seen at the regional centre Uppåkra from an abundance of high-status objects, could also include agricultural wealth, with extensive access to high-quality grain.  相似文献

To investigate the effective depth from the surface sediment, and phosphorus fractions related to phosphorus release under short-term anoxic conditions, varying lengths of sediment cores taken from Lake Kasumigaura, a large shallow polymictic lake in Japan, were incubated for a few weeks and then analyzed. Results showed few differences in total phosphorus (TP) amount per unit area in overlying waters irrespective of the core thickness, and sums of TP in both overlying water and 0- to 2-cm sediment layers were nearly equal before and after the experiment, indicating that phosphorus was released mainly from the 0- to 2-cm layer by dissolution. In contrast, phosphorus was decreased in pore water below a 2-cm depth, probably through sorption to sediment solids. The citrate-dithionite-bicarbonate total phosphorus (CBD-TP) and non-reactive phosphorus extracted by NaOH (NaOH-NRP) in sediment solids in the 0- to 2-cm layer decreased during the experiment. The decreases of CBD-TP were 10 times higher than those of NaOH-NRP, suggesting that the released phosphorus came mainly from the fraction bound to iron in Lake Kasumigaura.  相似文献
