Aquatic ecosystems are amongst the most heavily altered ecosystems and exhibit a disproportional loss of biodiversity. Numerous stressors, such as nutrient enrichment, contaminant pollution, sedimentation and alterations in stream hydrology and habitat structure, account for these losses. Understanding these forces is of utmost importance to prevent riverine ecosystems from further deterioration and to provide helpful insights for restoration practices. In the present study, we analyse the response of biological indicators to a large number of environmental factors. For this, benthic invertebrate assemblages from 83 sites in Germany were described based on 25 metrics from four different metric types. The condition of the sites was described using 27 environmental factors: 13 for water quality, 4 for land use in the catchment and 10 for local scale habitat structure. The relative importance of single environmental predictors or predictor combinations for benthic invertebrate assemblages was analysed with single and multiple linear regression models. The results for the latter models were statistically supported via a bootstrap approach. The models revealed the importance of water quality and catchment-scale land use in explaining benthic invertebrate assemblages; in particular, chloride, oxygen, total organic carbon and the amounts of artificial surfaces and arable land were the most important predictors. Models including solely structural variables such as plan form, bank structures and substrate diversity had lower goodness of fit values than those for other variables. Regarding the four different assemblage metric types, functional metrics had on average lower goodness of fit values than composition/abundance, richness/diversity and sensitivity/tolerance metrics. Among the richness/diversity metrics, however, the model results for the Shannon–Wiener and Simpson diversity indices and evenness were poor. Our results show that catchment-related factors and water quality were of overriding importance in shaping biodiversity patterns and causing species loss. In contrast, structural degradation at a local scale was not the most significant stressor. This finding might explain why structural restoration at a reach scale often yields a low benefit–cost ratio and may be considered to represent inappropriate investment prioritisation. 相似文献

Over the last 100 years, studies have provided mixed results on the mortality and health of tall and short people. However, during the last 30 years, several researchers have found a negative correlation between greater height and longevity based on relatively homogeneous deceased population samples. Findings based on millions of deaths suggest that shorter, smaller bodies have lower death rates and fewer diet-related chronic diseases, especially past middle age. Shorter people also appear to have longer average lifespans. The authors suggest that the differences in longevity between the sexes is due to their height differences because men average about 8.0% taller than women and have a 7.9% lower life expectancy at birth. Animal experiments also show that smaller animals within the same species generally live longer. The relation between height and health has become more important in recent years because rapid developments in genetic engineering will offer parents the opportunity to increase the heights of their children in the near future. The authors contend that we should not be swept along into a new world of increasingly taller generations without careful consideration of the impact of a worldwide population of taller and heavier people. 相似文献

The neurochemical, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) is involved in the regulation of toadfish pulsatile urea excretion as well as the teleost hypoxia response. Thus, the goal of this study was to determine whether environmental conditions that activate branchial chemoreceptors also trigger pulsatile urea excretion in toadfish, since environmental dissolved oxygen levels in a typical toadfish habitat show significant diel fluctuations, often reaching hypoxic conditions at dawn. Toadfish were fitted with arterial, venous and/or buccal catheters and were exposed to various environmental conditions, and/or injected with the O(2) chemoreceptor agonist NaCN or the 5-HT(2) receptor agonist alpha-methyl-5HT. Arterial PO(2), as well as ammonia and urea excretion were monitored. Natural fluctuations in arterial PO(2) levels in toadfish did not correlate with the occurrence of a urea pulse. Chronic exposure (24 h) of toadfish to hyperoxia was without effect on nitrogen excretion, however, exposure to hypoxia caused a significant reduction in the frequency of urea pulses, and exposure to hypercapnia resulted in a reduction in the percentage of nitrogen waste excreted as urea. Of toadfish exposed acutely to hypoxia, 20% pulsed within 1 h, whereas none pulsed after normoxic or hypercapnic treatments. Furthermore, 20% of fish injected intravenously with NaCN pulsed within 1 h of injection, but no fish pulsed after injection of NaCN into the buccal cavity. To test whether environmental conditions affected 5-HT(2) receptors, toadfish were injected with alpha-methyl-5HT, which elicits urea pulses in toadfish. No significant differences in pulse size occurred among the various environmental treatments. Our findings suggest that neither the environmental conditions of hypoxia, hyperoxia or hypercapnia, nor direct branchial chemoreceptor activation by NaCN play a major role in the regulation of pulsatile urea excretion in toadfish. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that numbers of small fish increase along river banks with decreasing light levels. Fish were sampled every 3h over a 24-h period (30–31 August 1992) along two adjacent stretches of bank (one shallow sand, one steep boulder) on the R . Morava near Breelav, Czech Republic. The size of fish was significantly greater along the boulder bank than along the sand bank. Numbers of fish along the steep boulder bank did not increase with decreasing light levels, except in Rhodeus sericeus and perch Perca fluviatilis , which were significantly more abundant at night. Along the shallow sand bank, all species increased in number at night, most significantly so. As light levels decreased, numbers of whitefin gudgeon Gobio albipinnatus and roach Rutilus rutilus decreased along the boulder bank, as their numbers increased along the sand bank, suggesting a dusk migration to the sand bank to avoid predation. This assumption was corroborated by the significantly higher number of potentially piscivorous fishes ( P. ftuviatilis and chub Leuciscus cephalus ≥ 80 mm) along the boulder bank during the night. 相似文献

Aspects of the predator–prey relationship between dice snake, Natrix tessellata and gobiid fish infected with Eustrongylides excisus were studied in Lake Sinoe, Romania. A population of snakes residing here shows a high prevalence of subcutaneous larvae
of this nematode. The hypothesis of the altered motility in infected fish leading to increased depredation by snakes was tested
by comparing gobiids collected from dice snakes with gobiids caught via electrofishing. Out of a total of seven identified
gobiid species, three were used for analysis: syrman goby Neogobius syrman, mushroom goby Neogobius eurycephalus, and round goby Neogobius melanostomus. No significant differences in prevalence and intensity of E. excisus infection were found between fish caught by snakes and those obtained by electrofishing. However, significantly higher abundance
of E. excisus larvae in fish caught by snakes was reported. These findings suggest limited influence of the presence of E. excisus larvae in studied gobiids regarding their susceptibility to predation by dice snakes. 相似文献

Resilience is the ability of an animal to return soon to its initial productivity after facing diverse environmental challenges. This trait is directly related to animal welfare and it plays a key role in fluctuations of livestock productivity. A divergent selection experiment for environmental variance of litter size has been performed successfully in rabbits over ten generations. The objective of this study was to analyse resilience indicators of stress and disease in the divergent lines of this experiment. The high line showed a lower survival rate at birth than the low line (−4.1%). After correcting by litter size, the difference was −3.2%. Involuntary culling rate was higher in the high than in the low line (+12.4%). Before vaccination against viral haemorrhagic disease or myxomatosis, concentration of lymphocytes, C-reactive protein (CRP), complement C3, serum bilirubin, triglycerides and cholesterol were higher in the high line than in the low line (difference between lines +4.5%, +5.6 µg/ml, +4.6 mg/ml, +7.9 mmol/l, +0.3 mmol/l and +0.4 mmol/l). Immunological and biochemical responses to the two vaccines were similar. After vaccination, the percentage of lymphocytes and CRP concentration were higher in the low line than in the high one (difference between lines +4.0% and +13.1 µg/ml). The low line also showed a higher increment in bilirubin and triglycerides than the high line (+14.2 v. +8.7 mmol/l for bilirubin and +0.11 v. +0.01 mmol/l for triglycerides); these results would agree with the protective role of bilirubin and triglycerides against the larger inflammatory response found in this line. In relation to stress, the high line had higher basal concentration of cortisol than the low line (+0.2ng/ml); the difference between lines increased more than threefold after the injection of ACTH 1 to 24, the increase being greater in the high line (+0.9 ng/ml) than in the low line (+0.4 ng/ml). Selection for divergent environmental variability of litter size leads to dams with different culling rate for reproductive causes and different kits’ neonatal survival. These associations suggest that the observed fitness differences are related to differences in the inflammatory response and the corticotrope response to stress, which are two important components of physiological adaptation to environmental aggressions. 相似文献
