The production of attractive, uniform true potato seed (TPS) progenies was investigated. Four breeding schemes were compared: intercrossing tetraploid cultivars (cv x cv); doubled dihaploids x cultivars (ddh x cv); cultivars x diploid unreduced-gamete producers (cv x FDR) and doubled dihaploids x diploid unreduced-gamete producers (ddh x FDR). Fifty three progenies and five clones were grown in a glasshouse in a randomised complete block design with three replicates of 25 plants per progeny and clone. Each plant's tubers were counted and the colour, shape, quality of skin finish, flesh colour, and commencai attractiveness (which includes yield) recorded. The most uniform progenies were also selected by visual comparison with the clones. For mean attractiveness, differences (P < 0.001) between breeding schemes and between progenies within breeding schemes were detected. The cv x cv and cv x FDR progenies were more attractive than clonal controls. There were significant additive and non-additive effects for attractiveness in all breeding schemes except cv x FDR. There were between-progeny differences (P < 0.001) for uniformity for all characters. Progenies uniform for one character could be variable for other traits. Breeding schemes gave different levels of uniformity (P < 0.001) for all characters except shape and flesh colour, but none gave low levels of variation for all traits. Doubled-dihaploid parents increased the variation in progenies. There were uniformity differences (P < 0.001) between progenies within breeding schemes for all characters. Evidence of additive and nonadditive genetic variation for uniformity in all traits was detected. In each breeding scheme, parents with good general combining ability (GCA) for uniformity in several characters were identified. Visually selected uniform progenies had parents with good GCAs for uniformity in a range of traits and high specific combining abilities (SCAs) for several traits. A desynaptic first-division restitution (FDR) clone and a male-sterile doubled-dihaploid clone had the best GCAs for tuber uniformity in TPS progenies. Achieving multitrait uniformity in TPS is problematic but may be aided by the selection of parents with GCAs for uniformity coupled with progeny testing to allow for non-additive effects.  相似文献

A potato breeding strategy is presented which avoids the common but ineffective practice of intense early-generation visual selection between seedlings in a glasshouse and spaced plants at a seed site. Once pair crosses have been made, progeny tests are used to discard whole progenies before starting conventional within-progeny selection at the unreplicated small-plot stage. Clones are also visually selected from the best progenies for use as parents in the next cycle of crosses whilst they are multiplied to provide enough tubers for assessment of their yield and quality. Mid-parent values, as well as progeny tests, are then used to select between the resultant crosses. Material from other breeding programmes can be included in the parental assessments and used in the next cycle of crosses if superior. Finally, in seeking new cultivars, the number of clones on which to practise selection is increased by sowing more true seed of the best progenies, but without selection until the small-plot stage. Traits considered are resistance to late blight [ Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary] and to the white potato cyst nematode [ Globodera pallida (Stone)], fry colour and tuber yield and appearance, as visually assessed by breeders. The theoretical superiority of the strategy for seeking new cultivars lies in being able to practise between-cross selection for a number of economically important traits within 1 or 2 years of making crosses, something that is not possible on individuals as seedlings in the glasshouse or spaced plants at the seed site. This also means that full-sib family selection can be operated on a 3-year cycle, an improvement on current practice of clonal selection on what is often at least a nine-year cycle. New cultivars can be sought with more confidence from the best progenies in each cycle, and modern methods of rapid multiplication used to reduce the number of clonal generations required to find the best clones.  相似文献

This study compares survival and growth of progeny derived from chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers in Impatiens capensis, a forest annual. When progeny were grown in the field, CH seeds had significantly higher survival rates over winter (64% versus 56%), and the survival advantage of outcrossed progeny was not attributable to seed weight differences. No differences in seedling growth were detected. Greenhouse comparisons revealed no difference in seed survival but a 30% growth advantage to CH seedlings. We found no changes in developmental homeostasis of three leaf shape characters between inbred and outbred progeny, nor was there any difference in variability within CH and CL families. The outcrossing advantage observed in these experiments could not have been caused by avoidance of sib competition. Theory predicts that self-pollinated progenies may be more variable than outcrossed progenies if rare, recessive alleles are important contributors to genetic variances. Electrophoretic markers indicate that progeny derived from CH flowers are predominantly outcrossed (at least 54-97%).  相似文献

Summary An incomplete diallel cross was used to study components of genetic variation in potatoes for a range of characters after early and late harvest. The progenies were also used to evaluate five predictors of progeny performance, namely the mean seedling performance, the mid-parent value and the means of the selfed progenies, of the diploid progenies and of the test-cross progenies. For almost all characters, the general combining ability effects were predominant, although the specific combining ability effects present were greater at late than at early harvests. The seedling performance for tuber yield, number of tubers and average tuber weight did not show any relevant relationship to the field performance. The midparent value provided, in general, satisfactory predictions of the mean progeny performance obtained in the diallel, except for ware tuber yield. The selfed and the diploid progenies did not improve the prediction of progeny means compared to the mid-parent value. The predictions based on the test-crosses surpassed those of the mid-parent value, particularly for tuber yield at ware potato harvest. Methods to identify superior parents are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Out of 720 field-grown potato first year seedlings plants with best tuber apearance and large and medium size tubers with best shape were respectively selected. The tuber progeny of each group was evaluated in field experiments. It was demonstrated that the selection of individual tubers was very effective in the elimination of clones with irregular tuber shape and deep eyes. The tuber progeny of selected tubers was not inferior to the tuber progeny of selected plants. Possible applications of the results to practical potato breeding are discussed.  相似文献

A diallel set of crosses, including selfs and some reciprocal crosses, was made between 15 parents, chosen for their fertility, from those included in a tetraploid potato (Solanum tuberosum subsp. tuberosum) breeding programme at the Scottish Crop Research Institute. The progenies were grown in randomised complete block trials with two replicates at a high-grade seed site from 1994 to 1996 inclusive and at a ware site in 1995 and 1996. The parents were included in the ware trials. Tubers were assessed for visual preference in all trials and for fry colour at both sites in 1996. Emergence and maturity were recorded in the ware trials and the tubers were assessed for yield, dry matter, size, appearance (regularity of shape), scab, uniformity, sprouting in store and keeping quality. There were very few growth cracks and very few internal defects. No reciprocal differences were found. Inbreeding depression was marked for emergence, yield, tuber size and appearance, and visual preference. In contrast, the selfs had a lighter fry colour than the parents and F1s. Combining-ability analysis (selfs omitted) identified fry colour, emergence, maturity, yield, dry matter and sprouting resistance as traits for which the GCA (general combining ability) variance and narrow-sense heritability were high enough for good progress from full-sib family selection. Correlations between GCAs for pairs of traits were examined, including those from previously published seedling progeny tests. For fry colour, an unfavourable correlation with low yield (r = 0.596) was compensated by a favourable one with high dry matter content (r = 0.652), whereas unfavourable ones between foliage and tuber blight resistance and sprouting susceptibility (r = 0.578 and 0.596) were identified for monitoring. Clones with high GCAs were identified for use as parents in future breeding and the extent to which GCAs could be predicted from the parents, and the offspring means from the midparent means, was determined by regression and correlation analysis. The offspring-midparent regression was highest for fry colour, followed by dry matter, emergence and sprouting. Values were lower for scab due to environmental variation; for maturity, yield and tuber size due to SCA (specific combining ability); and for visual preference due to both factors. The progenies from eight crosses between potato clones were examined. The clones were grown as seedlings in a glasshouse and subsequently from tubers in the field at two sites in two consecutive years. At harvest, all the clones were visually assessed by four breeders using a 1–9 scale of increasing desirability. Although there was a formally significant interaction between progenies and environments, the rank of the mean of a cross remained relatively consistent over different growing conditions. It is suggested, therefore, that progeny evaluation by breeders' visual preference can be used to identify the crosses with the highest potential of producing commercial cultivars.  相似文献

Effects of skin spot (Oospora pustulans) on potatoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
King Edward and Majestic seed potatoes selected as ‘clean’ (macroscopically symptomless), moderate and severe according to the extent of skin spot were planted in field experiments at Rothamsted between 1964 and 1968. Usually crops from ‘clean’ and moderately infected seed did not differ detectably in growth or yield. Plants from severely infected seed tubers emerged more slowly, had fewer stems and yielded less (King Edward 20 %, Majestic 13 %). Seed infection also affected tuber size distribution; severely infected seed of King Edward yielded almost 4 tons/acre less of 1 1/4-2 1/4 in tubers and Majestic, 1 ton/acre less of these and 2 tons/acre less 2 1/4-3 1/4 in tubers. However, the total yield from diseased seed stocks was only slightly less (King Edward, o-6 ton/acre and Majestic o-8 ton/acre) than the yields from the ‘clean’ tubers selected from them. Seed severely infected by Oospora pustulans often increased infection of the progeny tubers, and usually decreased their infection by Rhizoctonia solani and sometimes by Helmintho-sporium solani. Another series of experiments compared King Edward seed tubers classified according to the number of live eyes showing in March. Seed with one, two, three and more live eyes yielded equally. About half the tubers without live eyes in March eventually produced plants, but late, with few stems and giving only half the yield of seed with three or more live eyes. Surprisingly, the progeny tubers from seed without live eyes were least infected by O. pustulans, R. solani and H. solani. Progenies of King Edward and Majestic seed from a common source grown on seven widely separated farms were infected more in 1963 than in 1964, but in each year infection differed widely between farms. Often where O. pustulans was common, R. solani was scarce and vice versa. By contrast, when King Edward stocks very differently infected by O. pustulans were grown at Rothamsted their progenies were almost uniformly infected by O. pustulans and R. solani.  相似文献

Numerically unreduced (2n) gametes from first division restitution (FDR) are considered to be superior to 2n-gametes from second division restitution (SDR) because they transfer a larger proportion of the total parental heterozygosity and epistasis intact to the tetraploid progeny. This supposed superiority was investigated by comparing 12 sets of reciprocal 4x-2x crosses. Each diploid parent used in a reciprocal set produced 2n-pollen by FDR and 2n-eggs by SDR. Six agronomic characters were investigated. FDR progenies (from 4x.2x) were found to have higher mean yields due to more and bigger tubers. With respect to underwater weight, the overall progeny mean of FDR progenies was significantly higher than that of SDR progenies (from 2x.4x). However, the absolute difference found between both overall progeny means was too small to be of practical significance. No differences between FDR and SDR progeny means were found for vine maturity and chip colour. In addition to the progeny mean, within-progeny variation is important in potato breeding. For vine maturity a higher within-progeny variation was detected in SDR progenies, whereas within-progeny variations for yield, underwater weight and chip colour were not different in FDR and SDR progenies. With regard to vine maturity, we conclude that SDR 2n-gametes are superior to FDR 2n-gametes because, with the same progeny means of FDR and SDR progenies, the within-progeny variation was higher in SDR progenies. Therefore the assumed superiority of FDR 2n-gametes was confirmed for yield but was not observed for vine maturity, underwater weight and chip colour.  相似文献

In three years, between three and six seed stocks of cv. Pentland Crown were planted in field experiments. Seed tubers, stem bases and progeny tubers from the growing crop and tubers at harvest and after storage were sampled intensively and estimates of inoculum and disease made for five principal tuber diseases: the blemishes skin spot (Polyscytalum pustulans), silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) and black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani) and bacterial soft rot (Erwinia carotovora). The data were principally used to calculate sample variances after transformation of % values to logits. A variance of 0.010 was selected as giving acceptable accuracy for most purposes and to achieve such values substantial numbers of samples would have been needed. Five to ten 50-tuber samples of seed tubers or 15–20 samples of a harvested or stored crop would have been required for assessing disease symptoms and similar numbers of samples for assessing gangrene potential by a standard damage test. The eye plug test for assessing inoculum of the three blemishing diseases used 15 or 20-tuber samples and five such samples of seed or about ten from the growing crop would usually have been adequate. Variances were nearly always greater for black scurf assessments than for other blemishing diseases. The data also illustrated changes in inoculum and disease levels during the season and in store. Their significance for understanding the epidemiology of the diseases and for storage disease forecasting is discussed.  相似文献

Three doubled dihaploid potatoes were hybridised with six tetraploid cultivars and the offspring examined for commercially important characters. Doubled dihaploids used as parents did not reduce the within progeny phenotypic variation for most characters below that found in material produced by intercrossing heterozygous tetraploids. They could however prove useful for improving some characters in a breeding programme. The products of the hybridisations were used to examine the genetic control of discrete variables such as tuber skin pigmentation, tuber flesh colour, and skin russetting. Doubled dihaploids were found to be useful for such studies because they have only three out of the five possible tetraploid genotypes. Presence or absence of red tuber skin in the progenies of cv. Désirée was concluded to be due to the segregation of a dominant major gene which was simplex in the parental cultivar. The yellow flesh of Desiree was found to be recessive. On the hypothesis that russet skin was due to three complementary dominant genes, possible genotypes of the doubled dihaploids and cultivars could also be deduced.  相似文献

Differences in amounts of infection following seed inoculation, by the mealybug vector (Planococcoides njalensis (Laing)) of cocoa swollen-shoot virus were used as a short-term test of virus resistance in a range of cocoa progenies. The test results were highly correlated with virus resistance as measured in field trials. The best assessment of seed inoculation experiments allowed for progeny-dependent variation in the latent period of the virus. Experiments in which estimates of progeny means varied significantly with replicate sometimes gave poor agreement with known field performance.  相似文献

 In 1992, 72 seedlings from each of 198 pair crosses were grown in a glasshouse, and the tubers produced by each plant were visually assessed on a 1–9 scale of increasing preference. Three groups of four progenies with high, medium and low mean scores were chosen to progress, without selection via tuber progenies and four-plant plots at a high-grade seed site, to replicated yield trials in the third clonal generation. The three groups maintained their high, medium and low scores for visual preference over the three clonal generations and also had high, medium and low scores in the second and third clonal generations for yield, size and appearance of tubers, all of which were components of visual preference. The three groups were predicted to have 13.6%, 1.8% and 0.2% of their clones exceeding the mean of 13 control cultivars for visual preference in the replicated trials, and 12.1%, 4.9% and 1.4% for yield, and 56.8%, 37.1% and 14.8% for appearance. The experiment confirmed that selection for visual preference within crosses in the seedling and first clonal generations is very ineffective, but that worthwhile progress can be made from selection in the second clonal generation, with correlated responses for faster emergence, earlier maturity, higher yield and greater regularity of shape (appearance). Combining selection of the high group of progenies with selection in the second clonal generation of the best 34 out of the 120 clones in this group, produced a response in visual preference in the third clonal generation of 1.00 compared with a maximum possible of 1.74.  Selfed and backcross progenies developed from tetraploid somatic hybrids between Solanum tuberosum (tbr) and S. commersonii (cmm) were characterized for nonacclimated freezing tolerance (NA) and acclimation capacity (ACC) (two independent genetic components of freezing tolerance) under controlled environments. The segregation covered 28% and 71% of the parental range for NA and ACC, respectively, with the distribution skewed toward the tbr parent. Therefore, ACC appeared to be relatively easier to recover in the segregating generation. Some first backcross progeny had greater freezing tolerance than the cultivated parent primarily through the increase in ACC. When grown in the field, the improved freezing tolerance observed in the selfed progeny under controlled conditions was confirmed. Among NA, ACC, and freezing tolerance after acclimation (AA, which is the cumulative performance of NA and ACC), AA exhibited the highest correlation coefficient with field frost tolerance. In addition to freezing tolerance, vine maturity and tuber traits including tuber yield, tuber number per plant, mean tuber weight, and specific gravity were also segregating. No significant correlation between undesirable tuber traits and freezing tolerance was detected. Vine maturity and freezing tolerance were significantly correlated, so more careful selection for earliness was necessary in incorporating freezing tolerance. Yield comparable or superior to the backcross parent Wis AG 231 and an early Canadian cultivar, ‘Sable’, was found in many backcross progeny and some selfed progeny. The observed high yield can be attributed to the increase in mean tuber weight as well as tuber number. Moreover, a high portion of progeny had a specific gravity higher than 1.085, and some greater than 1.1.  Two diploid potato parents, W5295.7 and W5337.3, and their colchicine-doubled tetraploids were used as male to cross with three cultivars: ‘Raritan’, ‘Shepody’ and ‘Superior’. Both diploids produced 2n gametes via first division restitution (FDR) during meiosis. Field experiments were carried out on seedlings of the 12 hybrid progenies in 1991 and 1992. Six of the progenies represented the tetraploid-diploid (4x-2x) hybrids and the other six tetraploid-tetraploid (4x-4x) progenies. The genetic consequence of FDR gametes was examined by comparing the mean and genotypic variance of six tuber traits of 4x-2x and 4x-4x progenies. Tuber appearance, eye depth, specific gravity and tuber size showed significant differences between the means of 4x-2x and 4x-4x progenies from either both or one of the diploid parents. The genotypic variances of these traits in 4x-2x progenies were reduced in various degrees from those observed in 4x-4x progenies. Major genes responsible for the inheritance of these traits are probably located close to the centromere. The two diploid parents may also carry alleles of different size and direction of non-additive genic effects in their 2n gametes. The 4x-2x progenies also outperformed the 4x-4x progenies with respect to the means of total and marketable yield. There were thus heterotic gene loci for high yield located close to the centromere. No marked reduction of genotypic variance, however, was observed. The results suggest that genes for yield would be scattered between the centromere and the site for maximum recombination. Potato, Solanum tuberosum L. is an important crop. However, it is difficult to breed potato cultivars by applying conventional crossing methods because potato has a tetraploid genome and is vegetatively propagated. Flower formation and tuber development occur simultaneously. Many potato cultivars hardly produce any fruits after crossing and fail to produce seeds. We report an improved procedure for obtaining progeny seeds by grafting potatoes onto tomatoes. The rate of fruit formation was more than 19% when the grafted potatoes were used for the crossing experiments, whereas crossing using the ungrafted plants showed a rate of 1.1%. This result suggests that our procedure results in the easy acquisition of null-segregant progenies by crossing mutant lines. It is also expected to improve conventional potato breeding.  相似文献

Heritabilities for shape index (the ratio of bulb height to diameter), based on parent—offspring regressions, were calculated for north European onion cultivars and inbred lines derived from them. Heritability estimates of 0·46 and 0·47 respectively were obtained for the two groups, S0 parent bulbs giving S1 progenies, and S1 parent bulbs giving S2 progenies. Within each offspring progeny, the regression of bulb shape index on loge bulb weight was significant. The regressions were used to estimate the mean shape indices of the progenies at the same mean bulb weight as their parents, and a series of ‘corrected’ progeny shape means thus obtained. Recalculation of the heritabilities using these ‘corrected’ progeny means gave increased estimates (0·78 and 0·84). By using this regression approach, the breeder can achieve high heritabilities when selecting for a specific mean shape index.  相似文献

The efficiency of visual selection in the early generations of a potato breeding programme is examined. Tubers from 571 potato genotypes were scored by four breeders after being grown, from true seed, in a glasshouse and in the field for three consecutive years. The four breeders were in good agreement as to which clones would be selected in any environment. The association between breeders was greatest when the clones were grown in plots in the field. All correlations of breeders' preferences between different environments were significantly greater than zero, but only accounted for a small percentage of the total variation. Selection in both the glasshouse and first clonal year produced a desirable response. However, such selection carried a high cost in terms of losing clones with commercial potential. Comparison of a random sample of clones with ones from the same crosses which had been selected, indicated that selection in the glasshouse and first clonal year was at best random with some suggestion, however, of a negative effect.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this article was to extend the model used to predict selection response with selfed progeny from 2 alleles per locus to a model which is general for number and frequency of alleles at loci. To accomplish this, 4 areas had to be dealt with: 1) simplification of the derivation and calculation of the condensed coefficients of identity; 2) presentation of the genetic variances expressed among and within selfed progenies as linear function of 5 population parameters; 3) presentation of selection response equations for selfed progenies as functions of these 5 population parameters; and 4) to identify a set of progeny to evaluate, such that one might be able to estimate these 5 population parameters.The five population parameters used in predicting gains were the additive genetic variance, the dominance variance, the covariance of additive and homozygous dominance deviations, the variance of the homozygous dominance deviations and a squared inbreeding depression term.Contribution from the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station. The potential for sexual reproduction in the facultative apomictHieracium pilosella was determined by pollinating with the closely related but morphologically distinctH. aurantiacum. The hybrid characteristics of the sexually produced progeny were used as markers for sex. Crossing was carried out under a range of environmental treatments to test the influence of (1) field versus glasshouse conditions, (2) nutrient level and the presence of a pathogen, and (3) photoperiod on the frequency of sex in facultative apomicticH. pilosella. We found significantly more sexual reproduction in the glasshouse than in the field for the two populations tested, but no influence of nutrient level, presence of the pathogen, or individual genotype. Photoperiod was not a significant factor for the single population tested. In several of the experiments seed production was significantly different between the treatments, despite the absence of an effect on the frequency of sex, indicating greater plasticity in this trait. In all three experiments a positive association was found between fecundity and the frequency of sex, with crosses producing sexual progeny having significantly more offspring than those that produced progeny exclusively via apomixis. We hypothesise that the cost of sex in this species may be offset by an increase in fecundity, with the cost of meiosis “diluted” by an increase in total progeny production.  相似文献
