Responses to radiant and convective heat input were analysed in the gregarious larvae of Perga dorsalis (0·5-2·5 g body weight). Aggregating diminishes convective heat loss from each individual and augments the body temperature of larvae in the sun. Voluntary raising of the abdomen, occurring at body temperatures above about 30·4°C, increases convective heat loss. At body temperatures above about 37°C, a filtrate from the semiliquid midgut contents is excreted from the anus and spread over the body. This increases evaporative heat loss and maintains the body temperature below the critical thermal maximum (42°C) even when ambient temperature rises to 48°C. Based on the tolerance to water loss (17 per cent of the body weight) and the rates of evaporation, it is evident that evaporative cooling may be employed successfully throughout the hottest hours of the day.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to evaluate the influence of rearing temperature and food concentration (20 and 30 °C, 1×105 and 2×105 cells ml−1) on the starvation threshold and nucleic acid content of the larvae of Balanus amphitrite. The larvae were also field-reared using micro-enclosures. Laboratory-reared larvae were larger in size than the field-reared larvae. An increase in size, DNA content and instar index of the starved II instar larvae was observed indicating that the absence of food may not be fatal to this early instar. The temperature at which larvae were raised and the food concentration had variable influence on the capacity to withstand starvation. Exposure to increased temperatures during starvation eliminated the effect of doubling food concentration during their feeding period prior to starvation. The larvae reared at 20 °C had comparatively lower nucleic acid content. The laboratory-reared larvae had ca. 1.7 times greater RNA:DNA ratio than larvae raised at comparable temperature in the field.  相似文献

Trogoderma granarium larvae reared at 30°C on wheat flour containing appropriate concentrations of farnesyl methyl ether (FME) resembled normal diapause larvae in their growth characteristics and reactions to diapauseterminating conditions. When these larvae were transferred to 37°C either without food or with normal food, normal adults resulted. But when the diapause-like state was broken at 37°C in the presence of the original FME-containing food the insects either died before pupal-adult ecdysis or gave abnormal adults. At 35°C FME did not inhibit the larval-pupal ecdysis, but only a few adults emerged and these were abnormal.Farnesol did not inhibit metamorphosis at 30°C and caused less abnormality than did FME.Based on these results, the hypothesis that the density-dependent diapause of this insect is caused by the presence, in faecal pellets, and thereby in contaminated food, of juvenile hormone (JH) analogues is rejected, but the possibility that diapause results from a high physiological level of JH brought about by causes other than the presence of JH analogues in the environment is examined.  相似文献

The effect of starvation on supercooling temperature (SCP) distribution was investigated in adults and larvae of Alphitobius diaperinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

The mean values for SCPs of adults fed at 20°C were −14.5±2.4°C (31 males) and −10.3±1.3°C (29 females). The distribution of the SCPs of these control adults was unimodal. No significant differences were observed in either mean wet weight or mean dry weight between males and females.

The mean values for SCPs of adults starved for 1 month at 20°C were found to be bimodal due to sexual dimorphism. The mean SCPs for males was lower (−17±2.6°C; 28) than that for females (−11.2±1.8°C; 26). No significant differences were observed in either mean dry weight or wet weight between males and females.

The SCPs of both fed and starved larvae, kept for 1 month at 20°C were −12.3±2.4°C (fed) and −18.0±2.6°C (starved).  相似文献

【目的】通过研究共生菌Tremblaya princeps的形态、分布及动态变化,明确该菌在宿主扶桑绵粉蚧Phenacoccus solenopsis体内的基本生物学特性。【方法】通过透射电镜技术观察T.princeps的超微结构;利用实时定量PCR明确T.princeps的分布和数量变化。【结果】扶桑绵粉蚧体内T.princeps的分布因性别而异。在雌虫中,T.princeps集中分布于含菌体,在其他组织器官中无分布;含菌体的大小与雌虫各个阶段的个体大小呈显著线性相关,且临近成虫期,含菌体的膨大速率加快。在雄虫中,T.princeps在个体发育的不同阶段,数量变化明显,在蛹期数量急剧增加,之后相对减少;含菌体结构在预蛹期消解。【结论】共生菌T.princeps的变化因宿主性别而异,且与宿主个体发育存在明显的相关性。  相似文献

【目的】本研究旨在明确松墨天牛 Monochamus alteratus 成虫及越冬幼虫体型大小的差异,探讨该虫越冬后成虫体型大小和越冬幼虫体重大小关系及原因。【方法】于2014年5月1日至10月31日在浙江富阳野外诱捕松墨天牛,通过测量野外诱捕到的松墨天牛成虫体长、体宽,确定林间松墨天牛成虫体型的差异;松墨天牛越冬幼虫的采集和称重测量明确越冬幼虫的组成和体重大小差异;进而通过对越冬幼虫单头跟踪饲养至化蛹、羽化,确定越冬幼虫体重大小与发育所得蛹和成虫大小的关系,阐明林间松墨天牛成虫体型差异的原因。【结果】浙江富阳野外诱捕发现,松墨天牛的活动期间很长,从5月中旬到10月初一直能诱捕到松墨天牛成虫,高峰期在6和7月份。松墨天牛雌雄成虫体型差异很大,雌虫平均体长和体宽分别为20.59±0.19和6.59±0.06 mm;雄虫平均体长和体宽分别为19.90±0.26 和6.44±0.08 mm; 雌虫的平均体长明显高于雄虫,但二者体宽没有显著差异;并且雌雄成虫体长和体宽呈显著正相关。越冬幼虫的头宽测定表明头宽的变化很大,最小为2.20 mm,最大为4.24 mm,经比对越冬幼虫由4龄和5龄幼虫组成;幼虫体重差异大,平均体重为304.2 mg, 介于71.6~858.0 mg之间,其中5龄越冬幼虫显著重于4龄越冬幼虫。进一步将越冬幼虫单管饲养跟踪研究发现,越冬幼虫体重大小决定蛹和羽化后的成虫的大小,二者存在显著的正相关,并且由4龄越冬幼虫发育所得的蛹和成虫显著轻于由5龄幼虫发育所得的蛹和成虫。【结论】松墨天牛成虫体型差异很大,这与越冬幼虫体重差异相关;越冬幼虫的体重大小决定了其化蛹后的蛹重和羽化后成虫的体型和体重的大小;造成越冬幼虫体重差异的可能原因包括松墨天牛成虫扬飞周期长导致的产卵期长而使得天牛发育进度不一致以及寄主不同部位营养的差异。  相似文献

Developmental and survival rates of the locally important diaspidid pest, Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret) reared on Solanum tuberosum L . tubers were examined under light and dark conditions; humidities of 33, 53, 62 and 75% relative humidity (RH); varying population densities; constant temperatures in the range of 20 to 30oC and at cycling temperatures of 12 h at 14°C and 12 h at 30°C. Developmental rate was slightly lower under constant light conditions but mortality was higher in the dark, particularly amongst the males. At 26°C, there were no differences in developmental rate in relation to the various humidity levels. However, survival was significantly lower at 33% RH, with females suffering higher mortality than males. Population density was found to have no effect on developmental rate or size of the females. Overall mortality increased in line with population density although the result was poorly correlated. Within the range 20-28°C developmental rate increased with rising temperature but decreased at 30°C. Thermal summation and polynomial regression data show a theoretical lower thermal threshold for development of 12.47°C. The thermal constant was 541.7 degree days. Survival was lowest at 20°C and 30°C and highest at temperatures in the median range and under cycling conditions. Male survival was significantly higher than that of the females at 30°C and under the cycling regime of 14/30°C. The results suggest that the optimum conditions for rearing A. cyanophylli on potatoes would be at temperatures in the range 24-26°C and humidities of 55-65% RH.  相似文献

(1) Meroplankters drawn into once-through cooling circuits of coastal power plants are subjected to transient thermal stress. The effect of such acute thermal shock on the development of barnacle larvae was studied in the laboratory.

(2) The response of the barnacle larvae (naupliar and cyprid stages) to elevated temperature was dependent on exposure time and their stage of development.

(3) Among the stages tested, N-6 larvae showed maximum tolerance. Exposure to 37°C did not affect larval survival, but delayed development of N-2 larva to cypris by one day.

(4) Exposure at 40°C delayed, hastened or did not affect the development time of N-2 and N-4 larvae through cypris, depending on exposure time.

(5) Ten mins exposure at 43°C proved lethal to all larval stages with mortality ranging from 20 to 86%.

(6) Development success of the surviving larvae, measured in terms of cypris yield, showed no significant difference from controls, at temperatures below 40°C.

(7) Settlement activity was significantly affected in only those cyprid larvae which were exposed to 43°C for 10 min.

(8) Results of the present study indicate that thermal stress experienced in the once-through cooling system does not have significant impact on survival and development of the barnacle larvae at temperatures of 37–40°C.  相似文献

It has been documented in the many-lined sun skink (Mabuya multifasciata) that pregnant females select lower body temperatures (27.6–30.8 °C) than do nonpregnant females and adult males (29.7–35.7 °C). We therefore used the skink to test the hypothesis that the maximization of reproductive benefits should be achieved in pregnant females by shifting thermal preferences towards the levels optimal for embryonic development but entailing relatively small costs of reproduction. Data on adult males showed that temperatures maximizing swimming stamina (indicative of locomotor endurance) fell within the range of body temperatures selected by nonpregnant females and adult males. Data on swimming stamina and feeding performance of pregnant females, nonpregnant females and adult males measured at 26 and 30 °C showed that: (1) pregnancy impaired locomotor and feeding performances, but such impairments did not persist after parturition; (2) the degree of locomotor impairment during pregnancy was greater at 26 °C than at 30 °C, but the degree of feeding impairment during pregnancy was greater at 30 °C than at 26 °C. Pregnant females of M. multifasciata selecting body temperatures at about 29 °C could not only produce good-quality offspring in a relatively short gestation length but also reduce reproductive costs associated with locomotor and feeding impairments to some extent. The effect of temperature regimes on conidia germination, radial growth and virulence of Beauveriabassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae against the spotted stalk borer Chilo partellus was investigated with Ethiopian isolates. Conidia germination, radial growth and sporulation of all isolates were retarded at 15 and 35°C. A suitable temperature range for the isolates was between 20 to 30°C. Conidia germination was less tolerant of low temperature (15°C) than radial growth. Radial growth and sporulation reacted differently to temperature. At both 25 and 30°C, all isolates induced 100% mortality to C. partellus larvae in six days. The LT50 decreased for the isolates with increasing temperature.  相似文献

Fifth-instar larvae of Manduca sexta were reared from hatching on artificial diet at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C. Total development time decreased with increasing temperature. Very few larvae (12%) survived at 15°C, so this temperature was not considered further. There was some mortality at 30°C (11%), and at 35°C (50%).The absolute rate of growth in the fifth instar was faster at 25 than at 20°C, but was similar at 25, 30 and 35°C. This was true both for caterpillars that were chronically exposed to experimental temperatures (i.e. since hatching) and for those acutely exposed (i.e. reared up to fifth instar at 25°C).There was a progressive decrease with higher rearing temperatures in both the initial and final sizes of chronically exposed fifth-instar larvae. Acutely exposed caterpillars matched for initial size showed smaller temperature related differences in final size. Because of these size differences there were differences in relative growth rate which did not reflect true differences in absolute growth rate.Total food consumed by chronically exposed caterpillars was greatest at the lowest temperature (20°C), and decreased progressively with increasing temperature. The absolute rate of food consumption increased from 20 to 25°C, but did not vary significantly between 25 and 35°C. Differences in the sizes of the insects at the different temperatures meant that there were differences among relative measures of consumption that did not reflect absolute food consumption.For chronically exposed caterpillars, none of the three usual indices of food conversion efficiency (AD, ECI and ECD) varied significantly with temperature between 20 and 35°C. This implies that the effects of temperature on metabolic costs are closely matched to food consumption.Oxygen consumption increased with temperature between 20 and 25°C but was temperature compensated between 25 and 35°C.These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the optimal temperature for growth in Manduca.  相似文献

Glyptotendipes paripes Edwards midge larval growth, development, survival, emerging adult size, and food digestibility when provided with six species of algae as food were studied in the laboratory. For the study, eggs from G. paripes adults maintained in the laboratory were reared to the adult stage at 30 degrees C for 60 d on pure culture of each algal species at densities of 0.4, 0.1, and 0.02 mg of algae (fresh weight) per milliliter, as a sole food source. All larvae reared on Microcystis sp., Botryoccocus braunii, and Scenedesmus quadricauda died before completing development. The only larvae to complete development to adult were those reared on 0.4 mg/ml Lyngbia cf. aeruginosa (44.0 d), Anabaena flos-aquae (29.7 d), and Chlorella keslerii (44.8 d). No significant differences in body size of the adults achieving complete development on the three algal species were found. Algal digestion, measured by comparing amounts of live and dead algal cells in remains of cultures used for feeding and in larval excrement, revealed that >95% of all L. cf. aeruginosa, A. flos-aquae, and Microcystis sp. cells were digested; for C. keslerii, 13% of cells were digested, whereas little or no digestion of B. braunii and S. quadricauda was observed. To evaluate the effects of algal species on larval growth, laboratory-reared (on artificial food) late third/early fourth instars of G. paripes were fed individual algal species, and 10 d later, body mass changes were recorded and compared with nonfed larvae. Body mass of larvae reared on L. cf. aeruginosa and A. flos-aquae significantly increased, whereas those provided Microcystis sp. and the nonfed larvae showed significant body mass reductions. Overall, B. braunii and S. quadricauda were not suitable as larval food, probably due to their low digestibility, and Microcystis sp. because of its toxicity. This study identifies some algae that do and others that do not support G. paripes larval growth. The information is useful in understanding the feeding habits of G. paripes larvae as some of these algae occur in the larval environments of this pestiferous midge.  相似文献

(1) The parasitoid Aphidius colemani was reared at 15 or 25 °C to induce variation in size and fat reserves; SCP and cold-tolerance were compared. Insects from both temperatures were also exposed to constant or fluctuating cold-exposure.

(2) The lower SCP in mummies reared at 25 °C may be partially explained by their smaller size, a negative relationship being observed between SCP and size.

(3) A bimodality was observed in SCP distributions, with two modes around −26 and −22 °C, likely because of presence/absence of gut content.

(4) The type of exposure had a striking impact, mortality being considerably lower under fluctuating regime.

The mole salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum, exhibits both aquatic (gilled) and terrestrial (metamorphosed) adult morphologies. Previous studies have shown the existence of body-size advantages associated with the terrestrial morph in A. talpoideum and other polymorphic salamanders (e.g., A. tigrinum). However, aquatic adult A. talpoideum mature at a younger age and often breed earlier than terrestrial adults. We tested the hypothesis that early maturation and reproduction in aquatic adults increase fitness (irrespective of body size). We reared larval A. talpoideum in mesocosms and varied the timing of hatching, with early-hatching larvae representing the offspring from early-breeding aquatic adults, and late-hatching larvae representing the offspring of later-breeding terrestrial adults. Our results demonstrate significantly higher survival rates among early-hatchlings relative to late-hatching conspecifics, supporting the hypothesis that early reproduction may be an important mechanism mediating the polymorphism in A. talpoideum. We discuss our results within the context of size-based models of the fitness of alternative life-cycles.  相似文献

In embryos of the European pond turtle, sexual differentiation of gonads is temperature-dependent. Production of oestrogens appears to play a key role in this phenomenon. Gonadal aromatase activity was measured in embryos incubated at 25°C (masculinizing temperature) and at 30°C (feminizing temperature). At the beginning of the thermosensitive period, the aromatase activity was low at both temperatures but was somewhat higher at 30 than at 25°C. Afterwards, it remained low in differentiating testes at 25°C, whereas it increased in differentiating ovaries at 30°C to form a marked peak when germ cells underwent meiotic prophase. Eggs were shifted either from 25 to 30°C (highly feminizing) or from 30 to 35°C for 6 days at different stages of embryonic development. The 25–35°C shifts performed during the thermosensitive period strongly increased the aromatase activity but were ineffective after this period. The 30–35°C shifts increased the aromatase activity at all stages. Altogether, results indicate that, in differentiating gonads of turtle embryos, temperature acts on the regulation of synthesis (and therefore activity) of cytochrome P-450 aromatase (P-450-aro). The expression of the P-450-aro gene itself could be temperature-dependent. However, temperature could also act upon the expression of another gene involved in P-450-aro regulation.  相似文献

制备每kg麦麸分别含10,20,30,40,50,60,100,150,200和300mg氧化镧的饲料,用这10种剂量的饲料分别连续饲喂1日龄的黄粉虫TenebriomolitorL.幼虫和成虫。用40mg氧化镧kg麦麸的剂量处理79d后幼虫体重比对照组增加43%,同样的剂量使产卵高峰期的雌虫日平均产卵量增加59%,是最佳的处理剂量。自1日龄起连续取食50d最佳剂量氧化镧的幼虫,体内蓄积有0.4%的镧元素。用最佳剂量氧化谰处理黄粉虫在经济上具有很高的投入-产出比。  相似文献

1. 1.|In the freshwater fish Chalcalburnus chalcoides, an increase in the body (standard) size caused decreases in the upper LT-50 from 36.6° to 36.0°C and lower LT-50 from 6.3° to 5.3°C

2. 2.|The fish acclimated to constant temperatures between 10°C and 30°C showed reasonable heat acclimation and also reasonable cold acclimation. Thus, an increase in the acclimation temperature from 10°C to 30°C caused increases in the upper LT-50 from 34° to 36.2°C and the lower LT-50 from 1.25 to 6.5°C.

3. 3|The mean survival time — temperature curves of 10°, 20° and 30°C acclimated fish at various constant temperatures showed decreased in the survival tim ewith increasing lethal temperatures. Furthermore, an increase in the acclimation temperature causes a shift in the survival duration-temperature curve to the right, i.e., the fish become more heat resistant. Thus, the mean survival duration of 10°, 20° and 30°C acclimated fish at 35°C were 7.5, 79.6 and 530 minutes, respectively.

4. 4.|The effect of the thermal experience to changing lethal temperatures depends on the first lethal temperature to which the fish were exposed as well as the sequence of temperature changes. In the experiments in which the first lethal temperatures were between 32° and 34°C and the temperature was varied in an ascending order, their thermal resistance was increased and the fish required 114 to 174% of the expected lethal doses to die while in the experiments in which the starting temperature were between 38° and 40°C and the temperature varied in descending order, the fish become more sensitive to the upper lethal temperature and they died after receiving only 62 to 81% of the expected lethal doses. Thus, with a gradual increase in the lethal temperature, the fish show additional acclimation in the zone of resistance which in turn causes an increase in the thermal resistance. This may have ecological significance in nature.

The effect of temperature on the life table of Acyrthosiphon pisum reared on Pisum sativum was evaluated under laboratory conditions using temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35°C. The development time of juvenile A. pisum decreased with increasing temperature (from 21.3 days at 10°C to 4.7 days at 35°C). Adult longevity also decreased with increasing temperature (from 53.2 days at 10°C to 2.3 days at 35°C). Interestingly, 70% and 25% of A. pisum nymphs reared at 30°C and 35°C, respectively, successfully developed into adults. These temperatures have previously been considered unsuitable for A. pisum development. However, adult aphids reared at 30°C and 35°C failed to reproduce. Linear regression analysis revealed that the lower development threshold of A. pisum was 153.1 degree‐days above 1.9°C. Maximal average reproductive capability was observed at 10°C for A. pisum adults, with each adult producing more than 120 nymphs. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of A. pisum increased from 0.124/day at 10°C to 0.337/day at 25°C, whereas opposite trends were observed for the net reproductive rate (R0) and the mean generation time (GT). At 20°C and 25°C, the intrinsic rate of increase of A. pisum was significantly higher than at 10°C and 15°C (P < 0.0001), indicating that 20°C and 25°C are within the optimal range for the growth of A. pisum, and that 30°C is beyond the upper threshold limit for reproduction, which involves a temperature range that is narrower than that of the survival range (upper limit is unknown, but above 35°C).  相似文献

In the present study, the effect of thermal stress on the variability and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in different morphological traits, viz., thorax length (TL), sternopleural bristle number (SBN), wing length (WL), wing-to-thorax (W/T) ratio, sex comb tooth number (SCTN) and ovariole number (ON), was investigated in 10 isofemale lines of Drosophila ananassae. The phenotypic and genetic variability is higher in the flies reared at low (20 °C) and at high (30 °C) temperatures as compared to that of standard (25 °C) temperature. Further, the levels of FA of measured traits differed significantly among the three temperature regimes except SBN and SCTN in males and SBN and W/T ratio in females. Moreover, the magnitude of positional fluctuating asymmetry is similar in males reared at three different developmental temperatures for SBN and SCTN but it varies significantly for SBN in females. However, when FA across all the traits was combined into a composite index (CFA), significant differences were found for both temperature regimes and sexes. Males showed higher CFA at 30 °C whereas in females it was higher at 20 °C. The results suggest that temperature increases the levels of variability and FA but the effect seems to be trait and sex specific in D. ananassae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The incidence of diapause in Ephestia kuehniella Zeller from an unhealed granary in Scotland was influenced by both photoperiod and temperature. At 25°C, nearly 50% of larvae entered diapause when reared in continuous darkness (DD) and up to 30% did so in short photoperiods. Little diapause was detected around LD 14:10 but a second, smaller peak of about 20% occurred at LD 16:8 and LD 18:6, falling away again to nearly zero in continuous light. More larvae entered diapause when reared continuously at 15 or 20°C than at 25 and 30°C. However, when larvae reared from hatch at 25°C in LD 16:8 were transferred after 1 week to 15°C in LD 9:15, almost twice as many entered diapause as did those reared at 15°C throughout. The sensitive phase for diapause induction occurred near the start of the final instar. The mean duration of diapause was between 2 and 3 months in most photoperiods at 20 and 25°C, and was shorter at 15°C. However, in DD at 25°C, it lasted about 7 months. Termination of diapause was hastened in larvae reared at 25°C in DD by transferring them to LD 14:10, and also by chilling them at 7.5°C for 6 weeks before returning to 25°C in DD. In an unhealed store in southern England, viable adults emerged from May to July and originated from larvae which terminated diapause relatively late. It would appear from the results of transferring larvae back to the laboratory at various times during the winter that some phases of diapause development were completed quite early after exposure to low temperatures, although no further development took place in the store until temperatures rose again in April.  相似文献
