The susceptibility of prey fish infected by metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Digenea: Diplostomatidae) to the predation of non-host predators under experimental conditions was investigated. Parasitized young-of-the-year Prussian carp Carassius auratus were consumed significantly more often by perch Perca fluviatilis compared to non-parasitized individuals, independent of Prussian carp density. The proportion of parasitized and non-parasitized fish consumed by the predator remained stable at four different prey densities. The probability of predation did not increase with the intensity of parasite infection. The effect of P. cuticola on the host seems to result mostly from pathological changes (poor condition, black spots). However, our results provide evidence of higher probability of parasitized Prussian carp being consumed by fish predators under experimental conditions.  相似文献

Cadmium is a non-essential metal with a wide distribution that has severe toxic effects on aquatic animals. Changes in hematology and muscle physiology were examined in silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) exposed to environmentally relevant levels of cadmium (0.01 mg L?1) for 96 h. Cadmium exposure induced significant increases in the red blood cell count, and in the plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose, and lactate. This suggests that the dose of cadmium was sufficient to cause stress, possibly associated with impaired gas exchange at the gills. There were no changes in hemoglobin concentration or plasma protein concentration. Significant decreases in muscle energy fuels (ATP and glycogen), and increases in muscle lactate persisted until the end of the exposure period, respectively. The changes in muscle lactate and protein in silver carp differed from those observed in response to exposure of fish to cadmium and heavy metals in other studies. The study highlights the importance of selecting unpolluted release sites with suitable water conditions for the survival of newly released individuals for stock enhancement of the Xiangjiang River.  相似文献

Community structure and dynamics in aquatic ecosystems are influenced by a variety of abiotic and biotic factors including productivity, species composition, and temperature. These factors may also affect local-scale community resilience to nonnative species invasions. We used habitat characteristics, zooplankton concentrations, fish abundances, and species composition and richness data collected by two fish population monitoring programs to define relationships that influence stress and nutrition in invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). We collected blood samples and quantified nutritional (alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, protein, and triglycerides) and stress metrics (cortisol and glucose) from individuals across three distinct time periods. Nutritional patterns in silver carp were explained by temperature and food resources, indicating elevated feeding in warmer months. Patterns in blood-based stress parameters were most strongly driven by environmental characteristics, elevating with high water temperatures and increased turbidity. Nutrient levels and community richness parameters did not influence the stress or condition of silver carp, likely due to the absence of limiting resources or competition for this species. Together, our results provide insights into the factors that may influence the spread and distribution of silver carp, as well as the characteristics of habitats that could be vulnerable to future silver carp invasion.  相似文献

Capture of carp Cyprinus carpio from holding tanks by dipnet, or from semi-natural conditions by rod and line, elicits a physiological stress response characterized by elevation of plasma cortisol levels. The transfer of carp to keepnets subsequent to capture does not increase or reduce the magnitude or duration of this response and in both cases plasma cortisol levels have returned to pre-stress levels within 24 h of the initial disturbance. The postcapture plasma cortisol elevation is accompanied by disturbances in plasma glucose and lactate levels but these are less consistent in severity and duration than the cortisol response. These data suggest that the retention of fish in keepnets following capture, does not represent a source of stress additional to that imposed by capture and has no effect on the rate of recovery of the fish from the initial capture stress.  相似文献

The stress response of common carp Cyprinus carpio was studied by evaluating plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate after single or multiple rapid temperature drops (ΔT: 7, 9 or 11° C). All three amplitudes used induced a significant rise in plasma cortisol levels. Peaks occurred within 20 min after onset of the cold shock. No stress-related secondary metabolic changes were observed in any of the experiments described: plasma glucose levels remained unaffected and plasma lactate levels dropped. Carp of 60 days old showed a significant stress response, although plasma cortisol levels were lower than those observed in carp of 120 days. Furthermore, fish that had experienced multiple cold shocks showed an overall lower cortisol response than fish experiencing a single cold shock, indicating that habituation to this stressor occurred.  相似文献

In order to study the sensitivity of two fish species, carp (Cyprinus carpio) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), to the immunomodulatory effects of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, the fish were exposed to a single UVB dose of 50, 250, 500 or 1,000 mJ cm(-2). These species represent different phylogenetic groups of fish, and they differ also in their behaviour inhabitating often dark and turbid (carp) or clear and transparent waters (salmonids). Immune responses were studied on day 1 post-irradiation. Unexposed fish, and fish exposed to radiation depleted of UV wavelengths served as controls. UVB irradiation markedly enhanced the blood respiratory burst and cytotoxic activity in carp, but in the head kidney these parameters were significantly suppressed. Rainbow trout respiratory burst was affected only after exposure with the highest dose of UVB. Lymphopenia and granulophilia were noted in both fish blood after exposure. This study indicates that UVB irradiation modulates immune functions in both fish species studied, and that rainbow trout is more tolerant than carp against UVB. Fish are clearly adapted to the environmental UVB levels prevailing in their usual living habitats, but are also a target of undesired effects of UVB on immune functions whenever exposed to increased radiation levels.  相似文献

Individual common carp Cyprinus carpio were screened repeatedly for risk taking (rate of exploration of a novel, potentially dangerous environment) and for competitive ability (success in gaining access to a spatially restricted food source). Marked differences in behaviour were evident, and significant consistency in individual responses across trials was found for both risk taking and competitive ability. In addition, there was a significant positive relationship between individual performance in these two contexts, with fish that explored more quickly in the novel environment tending to be among the first to gain access to restricted food. In two follow‐up studies, resting metabolic rate, blood lactate and glucose and the expression of the cortisol receptor gene in the head kidney and brain were compared in fish from the two extremes of the risk‐taking spectrum. Mass‐specific metabolic rate was significantly higher in risk‐taking than in risk‐avoiding fish, while plasma lactate and glucose concentrations and expression of the cortisol receptor gene were lower. It was concluded that a behavioural syndrome based on boldness and aggression exists in C. carpio, as it does in many other animals, and that this is associated with differences in metabolic and stress physiology (down to the genomic level) similar to those described in animals with different coping strategies.  相似文献

In most animal cells, transport of monosaccharides across the plasma membrane is mediated by glucose transporters (GLUT). Mammals express at least five distinct transporters (GLUTs 1--5), which are well characterised both functionally and genetically. In contrast, the glucose transport system of fish remains poorly studied. Here we report studies of hexose uptake in carp EPC cells and cloning of a glucose transporter cDNA from these cells. Transport of radio-labelled methylglucose (3-OMG) followed Michaelis--Menten kinetics with a K(m) value (8.5 mM) similar to that of mammalian cells. The inhibition of transport by cytochalasin B and phloretin, but not by phloridzin or cyanide, strongly suggested the existence of a facilitative carrier. D-Glucose, 2-deoxyglucose, 3-OMG, D-mannose and D-xylose were competitive inhibitors of 3-OMG uptake, while L-glucose, mannitol, D-fructose, D-ribose and sucrose did not compete with 3-OMG. We cloned a carp glucose transporter (CyiGLUT1), using RT-PCR and RACE strategies. CyiGLUT1 was different from known carp and zebrafish EST sequences. The complete cDNA (3060 bp) contained one open reading frame encoding a predicted protein of 478 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence shared 78% identity with mammalian and avian GLUT1 proteins. Key amino acids involved in substrate selection and catalysis of mammalian GLUTs were conserved in the carp transporter.  相似文献

The authors have experimental evidence that the protozoa causing the swimbladder inflammation (SBI) of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are indentical with presporogonic stages of Sphaerospora renicola Dyková et Lorn, 1982 parasitizing the renal tubules. Homogenates prepared from the thickened and inflamed swimbladder of naturally infected common carp, when injected into the abdominal cavity of fish, produced renal sphaerosporosis in the infection-free common carp if the homogenates contained the parasites described by Kovács -Gayer et al. (8). By intraperitoneal injection, the Unidentified Blood Organisms (UBOs) living in the blood of the common carp were transmissible to common carp, from the blood of which they were demonstrable for a long time. However, they were not transformed into Sphaerospora. To other cyprinids (gibel carp, silver carp, grass carp, tench, roach) neither the blood stages nor the swimbladder stages were transmissible from the common carp.  相似文献

Leucocytes from anterior kidney, middle kidney, spleen, thymus and peripheral blood of Common carp were examined. Lymphocytes were found to have a similar fine structure to that of mammals. Thrombocytes had a similar appearance to lymphocytes, but the former were sometimes distinguishable by vesicles in series and/or microtubules below the plasma membrane. Blast cells, monocytes and clearly identifiable plasma cells were also seen. Neutrophils had varying proportions of at least two types of granules, which often presented inclusions. Owing to their different granules, eosinophils and basophils were morphologically distinguishable, but differentiated cells with equal proportions of the two types of granules were also seen. In addition, cells of uncertain nature, possessing rod-shaped granules, were observed. The different leucocyte types showed the same morphology in the different lymphoid organs and in peripheral blood, although they were present in different proportions.  相似文献

We examined the impact of five silver carp biomass levels (0, 8, 16, 20, and 32 g m−3) on plankton communities and water quality of Villerest eutrophic reservoir (France). We realized the experiments using outdoor mesocosms. The presence of silver carp led to changes in zooplankton and phytoplankton assemblages. High fish biomass strongly reduced cladoceran abundance (through predation). Silver carp inefficiently grazed down particles < 20 μm. More importantly, however, the suppression of herbivorous cladocerans resulted in the increase of small size algae which were relieved from grazing and benefit from high nutrient concentrations. In contrast, in mesocosms without fish, the dominance of cladocerans (mainly Daphnia) controlled small size algae and probably also larger size algae (colonial chlorophytes, cyanobacteria). Thus, the Secchi disc transparency increased markedly. Through cascade effects, the modification of grazers communities led to changes in the utilization patterns of the added nutrients by phytoplankton communities. In high fish biomass treatments, nutrients were more efficiently accumulated into particulate fractions compared with no-fish and low-fish biomass treatments that were characterized by higher dissolved nutrients concentrations. Zooplankton was an essential source of food for silver carp. The productivity of zooplankton sustained a moderate silver carp biomass (up to 16 g m−3). In the presence of the highest fish biomass, the productivity of zooplankton was not large enough and silver carps fed on additional phytoplankton. Although mesocosms with high fish biomass were characterized by a slight cyanobacteria development compared with other fish mesocosms, silver carp was not effective in reducing cyanobacteria dominance. Flood discharge results in total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation downstream of a dam during the flood period. Fish suffer death from gas bubble disease (GBD) caused by TDG supersaturation. Nonetheless, current studies mainly attach importance to the survival of benthic fish affected by TDG supersaturation in the Yangtze River in China. Few studies have attempted to investigate the survival of pelagic fish influenced by TDG supersaturated water and compare the tolerance characteristics to TDG supersaturation between benthic and pelagic fish. To identify the survival of fish species that inhabit the various water layers affected by TDG supersaturation, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) (pelagic fish) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) (benthic fish) were chosen to conduct an acute exposure experiment of four different TDG supersaturation levels (125%, 130%, 135% and 140%). The findings illustrated that the two fish species both exhibited evident aberrant behaviours of maladjustment in TDG supersaturated water. Obvious GBD symptoms were also found in the test fish. The survival probability of silver carp and common carp decreased with increasing levels of TDG supersaturation. The median survival time (ST50) values of the silver carp exposed to four levels of TDG supersaturated water (125%, 130%, 135% and 140%) were 26.84, 7.96, 5.56 and 3.62 h, respectively, whereas the ST50 values of common carp were 53.50, 26.00, 16.50 and 11.70 h, respectively. When compared with common carp, silver carp had a weaker tolerance to TDG-supersaturated water and were vulnerable to GBD. It shows that levels above 125% are not safe for common carp survival. In terms of the tolerance threshold value, silver carp merits further investigation because it showed lower tolerance to TDG than did common carp.  相似文献

Fertility of backcross triploid hybrids containing one genome of Prussian carp and two genomes of common carp is investigated. The females of hybrids of Prussian carp and common carp (Prussian × common carp) are prolific and produce diploid gametes. Since males of such hybrids are sterile, their reproduction is realized by means of induced gynogenesis. Triploid progeny is obtained by backcrossing female Prussian × common carp with carp males. Among triploids obtained from hybrids F1 and among hybrids of the first gynogenetic generation, there were no prolific specimens. However, in reproduction of diploid hybrids by means of gynogenesis during six generations, the female fertility in the backcross progeny is restored. From backcross triploid females (daughters of Prussian × common carp of the sixth gynogenetic generation), a viable triploid gynogenetic progeny and a tetraploid backcross (by carp) progeny are obtained. The obtained data may be considered as the experimental proof of the hypothesis of reticular speciation.  相似文献

The effect of Chinese herbs (Astragalus radix and Ganoderma lucidum) on immune response of carp was investigated. Fish were fed diets containing Astragalus (0.5%), Ganoderma (0.5%) and combination of two herbs (Astragalus 0.5% and Ganoderma 0.5%) for 5 weeks. Other groups of fish were vaccinated (i.p.) against Aeromonas hydrophila/Aeromonas salmonicida (Shering Plough, Essex, U.K.) at the beginning of the experiment and fed the same diets as described above. Control fish (negative control) and fish vaccinated only (positive control) were fed basal diets without supplements of herbs. The respiratory burst activity, phagocytosis, lysozyme activity and circulatory antibody titres in plasma were monitored. Following 5 weeks after feeding, fish were infected with A. hydrophila and mortalities were recorded. The results of this study showed that feeding non-vaccinated and vaccinated carp with combination of Astragalus and Ganoderma stimulated respiratory burst activity, phagocytosis of phagocytic cells in blood and lysozyme and circulatory antibody titres in plasma in vaccinated carp. Fish challenged with A. hydrophila had variable survival. The best survival (60%) was in vaccinated group fed with both herbs, while almost 90% of control fish (negative control) and 60% of fish vaccinated only (positive control) died.  相似文献

Common carp (at 20°C) and rainbow trout (at 15°C) were fitted with an indwelling cannula in the dorsal aorta. The fish were exposed to a controlled decline of waterpO2 followed by 90 min deep hypoxia at 0.3 kPa (carp) or 4.8 kPa (trout). Thereafter, normoxic recovery was monitored in both species for 48 h. At regular intervals blood samples were analysed for glucose, lactate, free fatty acids, adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. The oxygen restriction was maximal in both species and resulted in a significant increase of plasma lactate levels. In carp, adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol levels increased to 2, 50, and 753 ng·ml-1 respectively during anoxia, whereas in trout these hormones increased to 12, 8 and 735 ng·ml-1 respectively during hypoxia. In hypoxic trout, the plasma levels of glucose (3 mol·l-1) were increased modestly whereas levels of free fatty acids (0.25 mmol·l-1) were decreased to 0.15 mmol·l-1. In carp, however, a marked and prolonged hyperglycaemia (from 5 to 10 mmol·l-1) and a significant continuous depression of plasma levels of free fatty acids (from 0.4 to 0.2 mmol·l-1) were observed indicating a difference in metabolic organization. It is suggested that hyperglycaemia is likely to be the result of hepatic glycogenolysis, stimulated by circulating catecholamines and a stimulation of gluconeogenesis by cortisol during recovery. The mechanism for the decline of plasma levels of free fatty acids is most probably a reduction of lipolytic activity, which appears to be an adaptation to hypoxia.  相似文献

The concentrations of PAHs in four species of fish (Common carp, Crucian carp, Bighead carp, and Topmouth culter) from Lake Taihu were tested, and the human health risks of PAHs by fish consumption were evaluated. Results showed that concentrations of PAHs in fish from Lake Taihu were 52.5–247.6 ng/g wet weight (ww), and the BaP equivalent concentrations of total PAHs (B[a]Peq) were 0.2–0.6 ng/g ww, which were less than the screening value of 2.6 ng/g wet for human consumption. The concentration sequences of PAHs in fish from Lake Taihu from high to low were Bighead carp > Crucian carp > Common carp > Topmouth culter. The human health risk level of PAHs by fish consumption was 5.8 ± 2.5 × 10?6, which was less than the maximum acceptable risk level of 1 × 10?5 for human health set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The tissue residue guideline (TRG) of PAHs for protecting aquatic wildlife was 1.3 mg/kg diet ww, which was higher than the concentrations of PAHs in fish from Lake Taihu. The results indicated that fish consumption from Lake Taihu would not cause health risk or harmful effects on wildlife that consume aquatic biota.  相似文献

In this study we evaluated effects of surfactants on motility parameters and DNA integrity of spermatozoa of freshwater teleost fish. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) spermatozoa were exposed to either sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS, anionic surfactant) or octoxynol 9 ( Triton X-100, nonionic surfactant). Both surfactants added at activation caused a decrease in sperm motility characteristics measured by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Intraspecific differences in speed and trajectory of movement were detected. Triton X-100 and SDS when added to non activated sperm were also effective in the decrease of sperm motility and caused an increase of DNA fragmentation. Our results suggest that not only sperm motility apparatus but also DNA are targets for surfactant action. Therefore any exposure of spermatozoa to surfactants, in aquaculture conditions or natural environment, would have a negative impact on fish reproduction.  相似文献

Insulin of carp (Cyprinus carpio) was isolated and crystallized. The insulin was biologically active in two tests; it decreased the blood glucose level and stimulated 14CO2-formation from glucose. The chemical properties are similar to those of insulins from other species. The insulins of carp and of mammals differ greatly immunologically. The activities of some glycolytic and associated enzymes have been determined in the muscles of trout and carp to investigate the possibility that the discrepancies previously reported between lactate accumulation and anoxic tolerance in these two fish result from underlying differences in glycolytic potential. Steady state concentrations of certain glycolytic intermediates were also determined in freeze-clamped muscles from tankrested fish. The activities of hexokinase, phosphorylase and phosphofructokinase were approximately 2–3 times lower in carp than trout white muscles. Pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities were 5 times lower in carp white muscle. The lower, broader pH optima of lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate kinase from carp compared to trout muscles is thought to be correlated with the greater anoxic tolerance of the carp. Glycolytic enzyme profiles were markedly different between the red and white muscles of the rainbow trout but broadly similar, with the exception of hexokinase activity, for the corresponding muscles of the carp. The results are discussed in relation to what is known about anaerobiosis in these two species and the comparative physiology of red and white muscles in fish.  相似文献
