The life cycles of Cyclops vicinus and Thermocyclops crassusin two shallow eutrophic habitats, Junsainuma and Naganuma Ponds,Hokkaido, Japan, were investigated. Both ponds exhibited similarseasonal patterns of temperature, oxygen levels and pH duringice-free periods; however, oxygen levels were extremely lowerunder the ice in Naganuma Pond. Cyclops vicinus showed differentlife cycles in the two ponds; in Junsainuma Pond, it reproducedin winter and spring (January-May) and entered diapause duringsummer and autumn (June-October) as copepodite IV stage, whileit reproduced in autumn (October-November) and spring (April-May),and entered diapause in summer (June-September) and winter (Januaryand February) as copepodite V stage in Naganuma Pond. Thermocyclopscrassus entered diapause during winter (December-April) as copepoditeIV and V stages in both ponds, and egg-bearing females appearedonly during the warmseason, from early May to late October,when water temperatures were >10°C. Summer diapause inC.vicinus was suggested to be an adaptation against fish predation,whereas C.vicinus entered winter diapause in Naganuma Pond probablyto avoid low oxygen levels. Thermocyclops crassus entered diapausein both ponds to avoid low water temperature. These resultssuggest that biotic and abiotic factors are important for leadingto specific life cycles of cyclopoid copepods in small waterbodies.  相似文献

大猿叶虫Colaphellus bowringi是江西山区十字花科蔬菜上的重要食叶害虫,以成虫在土中越夏和越冬。由于成虫滞育期的差异,该虫的化性显示了明显的种内变异。有些个体隔年繁殖;有些个体是一化性的,仅在春季或秋季繁殖1代;有些个体是二化性的,春季和秋季各繁殖1代;有些个体是多化性的,春季1代,秋季2~3代。因此,大猿叶虫在田间一年可发生4代。在春季,滞育成虫于2月底至4月初陆续出土繁殖;在秋季,滞育成虫于8月中旬至10月初陆续出土繁殖。春季羽化的成虫于4月底至6月上旬陆续入土越夏,秋季羽化的成虫于9月中旬至12月底陆续入土越冬。大猿叶虫一生能交配多次,大多数雌虫的产卵期超过1个月,最长达67天。平均每雌产卵量:春季世代为644粒,秋季世代为963粒,最高达1.950粒。各虫态的发育历期:在15~30℃间,卵为13.78~3.14天,幼虫为22.83~6.95天,蛹为12.10~3.18天。发育阈值温度:卵为10.7℃,幼虫为8.8℃,蛹为9.6℃。非滞育成虫的寿命约为1~2个月,滞育成虫的寿命为5~38个月。滞育成虫均入土蛰伏,在土中的蛰伏深度为9~31 cm 。  相似文献

The dominant Antarctic copepod species Calanoides acutus, Calanuspropinquus, Rhincalanus gigas and Metridia gerlachei were investigatedwith respect to their abundance, vertical distribution, developmentalstage composition, dry weight and lipid content. The specimenswere sampled during three expeditions to the eastern WeddellSea in summer (January/February 1985), late winter/early spring(October/November 1986) and autumn (April/May 1992) between0 and 1000 m depth to follow the seasonal development of thepopulations. Three species were most abundant in April, onlyC.propinquus reached highest concentrations in February. A seasonalmigration pattern was evident in all four species, but was mostpronounced in C.acutus. In October/November, they inhabiteddeeper water layers, their ascent started by mid-November andin mid-February the species concentrated in the upper 50 m,except for M.gerlachei (50–100 m). Their descent was observedin April/May. The stage composition changed dramatically withseason, the older developmental stages (CIII–CVI) dominatedthe populations in late winter/early spring, whereas youngerstages (CI and CII) prevailed during summer (C.acutus, C.propinquus)or autumn (R.gigas, M.gerlachei). Only C.acutus ceased feedingin autumn and diapaused at depth. Strong differences betweenseasons were also detected in dry weight and lipid levels, withminima in late winter/early spring and maxima in summer (C.acutus,R.gigas) or autumn (C.propinquus, M.gerlachei). Lipid reservesseem to be most important for the older stages of C.acutus andC.propinquus. Based on these seasonal data, different life cyclestrategies are suggested for the four species.  相似文献

Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) causes yearly losses of 1–2 million Euros to the stockfish industry in Lofoten, Norway. To develop an efficient management program, knowledge of its life cycle and phenology in production areas is needed. Cohort studies in a simulated Lofoten climate showed that field abundance peaks of adults in early spring and midsummer can be explained by a cohort originating from stockfish and its subsequent generations. Laboratory simulations with normal, increased, and decreased Lofoten temperatures indicate that C. vicina overwinter as a mix of larvae, pupae, and adults, and a temperature change of ± 2 °C significantly influences reproductive timing, reproductive output, and female mortality. Flies originating from stockfish reproduced during the first summer when temperatures were increased 2 °C above normal. At lower temperatures, the reproductive investment was low or absent during the first summer and the adult flies entered the winter in a diapausing state. Most offspring produced during the first summer and autumn developed continuously without maternally induced diapause, pupated during the winter, and hatched in the early spring to co‐occur with their parent generation during stockfish production. Calliphora vicina showed flexibility in reproductive efforts and overwintering strategies. The high proportion of adults overwintering compared with the commonly used larval diapause strategy might be interpreted as an adaptation to exploit the stockfish resource. The majority of female C. vicina that cause damage to stockfish likely developed on fish dried the previous year, and a continuous year‐long trapping is recommended to decimate the population.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Climate warming is now widely recognised as a major factor influencing ecological processes in terrestrial, marine and freshwater habitats. Here, we investigated how a recent period of warm springs and summers has affected the population dynamics of various cyclopoid copepods in a central European lake. We compared (i) the duration of the period when the species were present in the water column, and (ii) their annual peak density in a period dominated by cool summers (1980–91) and one dominated by warm summers (1992–99). 2. The copepods under investigation were (i) Thermocyclops oithonoides, (ii) Mesocyclops leuckarti and (iii) Acanthocyclops robustus. These species differ in their thermal demand and seasonal phenology. Therefore, we hypothesised that enhanced summer warming would produce species‐specific responses. 3. The active phase of the copepods was usually prolonged both in spring and autumn. The earlier emergence of T. oithonoides (May in the warm years, July in the cool years) was probably related to high water temperature in late spring. The later onset of winter diapause in all species may have been coupled to raised temperature in late summer and autumn. 4. The annual peak abundance of the two thermophiles M. leuckarti and T. oithonoides increased significantly in the warm period. In the latter case, the increase was probably because of the early start to population growth. In contrast, M. leuckarti probably responded primarily to mid‐summer heat waves, in that its development time was likely to be short. We speculate that the increase in population size of both species resulted from the development of an additional generation (three instead of two cohorts per year). In contrast to these thermophiles, the coexisting A. robustus, which is adapted to a broader temperature range, did not respond noticeably to the warming trend. 5. In general, the nature of these responses to summer warming varied substantially among species, and depended on the detailed seasonal patterning of the warming. Our findings thus support the hypotheses that single species are sensitive indicators of climate change, and that the seasonal timing of warming is crucial in the context of climate–ecosystem relationships. 6. Moreover, our results add to the body of evidence that climate warming produces shifts in the seasonal phenology of aquatic and terrestrial organisms.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 In a field survey of 1 year the intertidal collembolan Anurida maritima (Guérin) was found to be a univoltine species. Every year in early May a new generation emerges from eggs that overwinter. The first animals become adult in July. Almost all eggs laid in summer do not hatch, but undergo a period of diapause. Diapause is terminated in autumn by temperatures below 5°C. However, due to the low temperatures in winter further egg development is suppressed until spring.
  • 2 The adult animals die, mainly in autumn. One of the causes of mortality may be starvation. In late autumn body size decreases and glycogen and lipid content are lower.
  • 3 It is argued that in autumn due to low temperatures A.maritima, which forages during low tide on the open shore and seeks refuge underground before the incoming tide, is too sluggish to find food in the limited period of low water. This probably explains why this cosmopolitan species has developed a strategy to survive the winter in the temperate zone in the egg stage.

The standing crop and photosynthetic activity of Microcystisaeruginosa Kütz. in both the plankton and sediment wereinvestigated from November 1979 to May 1982 in Lake Kasumigaura,Japan. The number of planktonic colonies of this species decreasedfrom early autumn to early spring, but increased in the sedimentduring late summer and autumn. The overwintering colonies inthe sediment were –100–1000 times greater per unitarea than those in lake water. No photoinhibition of photosynthesiscould be observed in overwintering Microcystis. The values ofthe initial slopes of photosynthesis-light (P-I) curves weresimilar to those of the summer population, although the maximumphotosynthetic rate (Pmax) measured at 20°C was lower thanthat of the summer planktonic population. In winter the valuesof initial slope of the P-I curve, and the ratio of phycobilinto chlorophyll a sorted from sediment were higher than in coloniesfrom the plankton.  相似文献

Interspecific and latitudinal variation in diapause characteristics were examined in 12 strains of Orius species (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) including O. sauteri (Poppius), O. nagaii Yasunaga, O. minutus (L.), O. strigicollis (Poppius), and O. tantillus (Motschulsky) from Japan. A latitudinal cline was found in the photoperiodic response controlling reproductive diapause: the lower the latitude, the lower the diapause incidence and the shorter the critical daylength. To examine the overwintering success, eight strains including four species derived from different latitudes (26–43° N) were reared outdoors in Tsukuba (36° N), central Japan from the autumn of 1998 to the summer of 1999, and their winter survival and spring fecundity were recorded. Most females of the northern strains entered diapause in the autumn when the temperature was still high, and died before winter without oviposition. In the southern strains including a nondiapause Okinawa (26° N) strain of O. strigicollis, females overwintered as well as native strains in a state of quiescence. In all strains, the winter survival was significantly lower in males than in females, and eggs and nymphs failed to overwinter.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in gonad maturation, sex ratio and size aredescribed for field populations of the marine calanoid copepodsPseudocalanus acuspes (Giesbrecht, 1881) and Acartia longiremisLilljeborg in Balsfjorden, northern Norway. Reproductive populationsof both species were present from March to September. Beginningin August, gonads in P.acuspes late copepodites and A.longiremisadult females switched to an undeveloped resting state. Dormancywas terminated in late winter, several weeks before the vernalbloom. Small samples of Pseudocalanus minutus (Boeck) indicatedboth an earlier induction and termination of the overwinteringphase in this species. Overwintering populations of P.acuspescopepodite stage V were dominated by males, but sex ratios evenedout at the time of spring moulting and mating. Juvenile maleswere larger than the females, except after the vernal bloomand in early summer. Abstract.
  • 1 Generation time, diapause phenology and cold tolerance of the flesh fly, Sarcophaga bullata, were examined under confined natural conditions in central Ohio. In this locality, the fly can complete a maximum of four generations annually.
  • 2 Very few pupae entered diapause in the first and second generations (May to July in 1988). In the third generation (August) 37% of the pupae entered an overwintering diapause, as did all pupae from the fourth generation (September).
  • 3 The adult eclosion date in the spring and annual generation time can be predicted accurately from degree day data.
  • 4 Cold tolerance of the field-overwintering portion of the population was high. After 30 days under field conditions, diapausing pupae readily survived a 7-day exposure to — 17°C. Glycerol appears to be the major cryoprotectant in S.bullata, and glycerol concentrations in the field population (95–142 mm ) remained high throughout the winter.
  • 5 In contrast, diapausing flies reared under laboratory conditions (20°C, 12:12 LD) were less cold tolerant, and glycerol concentrations were lower (6.9–21.2 mm ). Field conditions thus promote the acquisition of high levels of cold tolerance, presumably as a consequence of the accumulation of higher concentrations of glycerol.
  • 6 In spite of differences in the cold tolerance of laboratory and field flies, the supercooling points of the two groups of flies were nearly the same, thus implying that the supercooling point is not a good indicator of cold tolerance.

Summary The Antarctic copepod species Rhincalanus gigas, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus were studied in the area of the Antarctic Peninsula in May 1986. Research was focussed on vertical distribution and stage composition of the populations. Rhincalanus gigas occurred in greatest densities in the upper layers of the water column, and copepodite stages CI and CII and nauplii dominated the population. Gut content analyses suggest that R. gigas was actively feeding. Copepodite stage CV dominated the Calanoides acutus population. At two deep basin stations (water depth>1000 m) the C. acutus population occurred below 500 m, whereas at shallower stations the majority was found above 300 m. Most specimens had empty guts. Calanus propinquus occurred in low densities, mainly in the upper water layers, and copepodite stage CV dominated. Most individuals of stage V had food in their guts. Our results suggest that C. acutus had ceased feeding and was overwintering in a resting stage (diapause), while C. propinquus and R. gigas were still active, the latter species having finished a late autumn spawning.  相似文献

  • 1 The oak treehopper Platycotis vittata (Fabricius) is bivoltine throughout its range with discrete generations in the early spring and autumn. Females of both generations diapause.
  • 2 Latitudinal variation in the timing of life history exists among four populations of P. vittata along the eastern coastal plain of the United States.
  • 3 We disrupted synchronization between P.vittata life history and host-plant phenology in the springs of 1984 and 1985 by placing southern populations on northern trees with a different phenology. This caused some females to oviposit abnormally in late spring, without entering diapause. The offspring of these females had reduced reproductive success.
  • 4 Winter diapause can be broken by providing females with a newly flushing tree with high levels of amino nitrogen in the sap. Females terminated winter diapause on trees breaking winter dormancy while females on trees still in winter dormancy did not, under identical photoperiod and temperature regimes.
  • 5 The role of host-plant mediated life history variation as a process promoting intraspecific geographic differentiation in the arboreal sap-feeding guild is discussed.

During experiments in a south Norwegian fjord in March and April1979, distribution and development of zooplankton were investigatedin detail. Numbers of protozooplankton, meroplankton and holoplanktonwere determined as individual species. Strong water exchangecaused a high variability in plankton composition and biomass.Changes in salinity and temperature as well as numbers of planktonindividuals and in the percentage composition of the developmentalstages of the spring spawning Calanus finmarchicus revealedthat a wind-induced inflow of Skagerrak water along the southwestNorwegian coast also entered the Rosfjord. In contrast to theAtlantic water with low numbers of copepods from the hibernatinggeneration, in the Skagerrak water the spring generation ofC.finmarchicus had already developed up to the first and secondcopepodite stages. The Skagerrak water was already very richin phyto- and zooplankton organisms. Here, an increase in biomassover time mainly resulted from the development of younger toolder copepodite stages and from a considerable increase innumbers of the tintinnid, Leprotintinnus pellucidus. The verticaldistribution of plankton organisms and fecal pellets was closelyassociated with the occurrence and the stratification of watermasses coming into the Rosfjord.  相似文献

The bug Andrallus spinidens (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is a polyphagous predator of insect larvae, which is distributed in tropical and warm temperate zones worldwide. Seasonal occurrence and diapause induction of this bug were studied in a population in Miyazaki, southern Kyushu, Japan. The field research showed that A. spinidens produces three or four generations a year and is most abundant from mid‐summer to autumn. Reproductive activity of field‐collected adults decreased from late summer to autumn, indicating that this bug enters adult diapause in autumn. Only adults were found in early spring and these were reproductive. Laboratory experiments showed that, irrespective of photoperiod, adult diapause is induced at lower temperatures (≤22.5°C), whereas it is avoided at higher temperatures (≥25°C). Ambient temperature falls across the critical range from late summer to autumn. Thus, the bug clearly overwinters in adult diapause induced by low temperatures and this diapause is terminated during the course of winter.  相似文献

Insects typically spend the winter in a species‐specific diapause stage. The speckled wood butterfly, Pararge aegeria, is unique in having two alternative diapause stages, hibernating as larvae or pupae. In southern Sweden this creates a seasonal flight pattern with four annual adult flight periods: the first in May (pupal diapause), the second in June (larval diapause), and the third and fourth directly developing offspring generations in July and August, respectively. We address the raison d'être of the two diapause pathways by (1) outdoor rearing of cohorts, and (2) performing transect censuses throughout the season for 20 years. We contend that an early start of next season provides a benefit accruing to pupal diapause; conversely, a large proportion of the offspring from adults of the fourth flight peak are unable to reach the pupal stage before winter, providing a benefit accruing to larval winter diapause. The results obtained show that the two hibernation pathways are unlikely to be genetically distinct because of a strong overlap between the two offspring generations, and because sibling offspring from the third and fourth flight periods are likely to choose either of the two hibernation pathways, thereby resulting in a genetic mixing of the pathways. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 635–649.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Gammarus species time the release of their young byusing ovarian diapause and the duration of embryonic development.During diapause vitellogenesis is arrested and oostegite setaeare lost. The onset of diapause is influenced by photoperiodunder experimental conditions. Two Gammarus species were studied.Gammarus lawrencianus is typical of the majority of Gammarusspecies that produce sequential broods through the summer andhave a diapause in the autumn. Gammarus setosus is typical ofthose which have an obligatory diapause lasting most of theyear that follows the annual autumn brood. Experimental shortday photoperiods (4L to 12L) induce vitellogenesis in Gammarussetosus, and have the opposite effect on Gammarus lawrencianus.Long day photoperiods promote vitellogenesis in Gammarus lawrencianusand prolong the duration of diapause in Gammarus setosus. Itis concluded that these two Gammarus species have their ownendogenous rhythms and that the role of photoperiod is to timethe reproductive cycle. Short days near the time of the fallequinox ensure that this timing is synchronized over a rangeof latitudes. The effect of photoperiod is modulated by theinfluence of temperature on embryonic development over the broadrange of geographic latitude inhabited by the species. Shortphotoperiods inhibit but do not prevent sexual maturation ofthe young. Short days also result in a slower average growthrate and greater size at maturity.  相似文献

Life cycles of the slugs Deroceras reticulatum and Arion intermediuswere compared over a four-year period on permanent pasture nearOvingham, Northumberland. Both species were semelparous, theirlife cycles taking about one year. D. reticulatum, unlike A.intermedius and other species, had two overlapping generationsthat laid their eggs in late spring and autumn respectivelyand also had one instead of two immature phases in its lifecycle. The pattern and rates of growth for the immature phasesin the life cycle of A. intermedius differed markedly from thosedescribed under laboratory conditions. Growth in the infantilephase was delayed in the field by low winter temperatures whilesecond stage growth was usually delayed in late spring by dryconditions. The life cycle of A. intermedius appears to be synchronisedby seasonal changes in photoperiod, unlike that of D. reticulatum.Growth in D. reticulatum continued throughout the winter monthsexcept under exceptionally cold conditions and was not usuallydelayed by dry conditions in spring. The size of hermaphroditegland relative to body weight in D. reticulatum reached a maximumin mature-unmated slugs and then became progressively smalleras the slug approached the post-reproductive stage which wasrelatively brief. Exceptionally dry conditions in 1962 delayedthe development of the hermaphrodite gland, the maximum sizereached was significantly reduced and fewer eggs were laid.
