Guinea-pigs infested with male ticks of the speciesRhipicephalus appendiculatus, and rabbits infested withR. evertsi evertsi, acquired immunity to conspecific female ticks. The hosts were first infested with male ticks and thereafter were challenged with males and females of the same species. The mean weight of the engorged females ofR. appendiculatus fed on guinea pigs previously infested with male ticks was 509.0 (±41.4) mg compared with that of females fed on control guinea pigs (651.2±31.8 mg). Similar weight differences were observed forR.e. evertsi females which fed on rabbits previously infested three times with male ticks. The mean weight of the female ticks which fed on these rabbits was 520.1 (±29.8) mg compared with 640.7 (±30.2) mg ofR.e. evertsi females which fed on control hosts. The concentration of gammaglobulins in the sera of rabbits was monitored at various intervals after the first infestation. It was found, for the first time, that infestation of laboratory animals with male ticks conferred immunity, but to a lesser degree than infestation with both sexes. It was also shown that the level of gammaglobulins increased from 3.4±0.28 g l–1 to 7.3±0.24 g l–1 in sera of rabbits hosts as a result of the feeding activity of males, but to a lesser extent than in sera of rabbits on which both sexes had fed (10.8±2.4 g l–1).  相似文献

To accommodate functional demands, the composition and organization of the skeleton differ among species. Microcomputed tomography has improved our ability markedly to assess structural parameters of cortical and cancellous bone. The current study describes differences in cortical and cancellous bone structure, bone mineral density, and morphology (geometry) at the proximal femur, proximal femoral diaphysis, lumbar vertebrae, and mandible in mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, and nonhuman primates. This work enhances our understanding of bone gross and microanatomy across lab animal species and likely will enable scientists to select the most appropriate species and relevant bone sites for research involving skeleton. We evaluated the gross and microanatomy of the femora head and neck, lumbar spine, and mandible and parameters of cancellous bone, including trabecular number, thickness, plate separation, and connectivity among species. The skeletal characteristics of rabbits, including a very short femoral neck and small amounts of cancellous bone at the femoral neck, vertebral body, and mandible, seem to make this species the least desirable for preclinical research of human bone physiology; in comparison, nonhuman primates seem the most applicable for extrapolation of data to humans. However, rodent (particularly rat) models are extremely useful for conducting basic research involving the skeleton and represent reliable and affordable alternatives to dogs and nonhuman primates. Radiology and microcomputed tomography allow for reliable evaluation of bone morphology, microarchitecture, and bone mineral density in preclinical and clinical environments.  相似文献

Simple models are presented of the energetics of annual migrationand of central place foraging, taking account of the speed andenergy cost of the journeys. They are applied to insects, fish,birds and mammals of a wide range of sizes, which travel byflapping or soaring flight, by swimming or by running. It isshown that annual migrations of several thousand kilometresare unlikely to be beneficial except for marine mammals andflying birds. Marine mammals and large flying birds are theanimals most likely to be able to benefit from foraging oververy large distances. Observed migration and foraging rangesgenerally lie within the limits predicted by the models.  相似文献

Hair samples from domestic and laboratory animals with suspected dermatophytosis were examined for the presence of saprophytic fungi. A nutritionally poor base medium, developed by the author, was used in the isolation and identification of the saprophytes. Three hundred and ninety-four specimens were examined of which 246 were from dogs, 75 from cats, 30 from horses, 19 from cows, 12 from guinea pigs, 5 from rats, 2 from parakeets, 2 from chinchillas and one each from a goat, a mink and a lesser panda (Ailurus fulgens). Moulds classified in 32 genera were isolated. The commonest in order of frequency were members of the genera Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Mucor, Aureobasidium, Alternaria, Scopulariopsis, Trichoderma and Trichothecium. The yeasts that were isolated were not identified. Aureobasidium pullulans was isolated significantly more often (chi 2 test p less than 0.025) from the dog samples than those from cats, Cladosporium spp. in the samples from dogs than horses, Mucor spp. from the cow samples than horses, Penicillium spp. from the dog samples than those of cats or horses. Skin infections caused by any of the contaminants were not encountered.  相似文献

Mobility is essential to the fitness of many animals, and the costs of locomotion can dominate daily energy budgets. Locomotor costs are determined by the physiological demands of sustaining mechanical performance, yet performance is poorly understood for most animals in the field, particularly aquatic organisms. We have used 3‐D underwater videography to quantify the swimming trajectories and propulsive modes of bluegills sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus, Rafinesque) in the field with high spatial (1–3 mm per pixel) and temporal (60 Hz frame rate) resolution. Although field swimming trajectories were variable and nonlinear in comparison to quasi steady‐state swimming in recirculating flumes, they were much less unsteady than the volitional swimming behaviors that underlie existing predictive models of field swimming cost. Performance analyses suggested that speed and path curvature data could be used to derive reasonable estimates of locomotor cost that fit within measured capacities for sustainable activity. The distinct differences between field swimming behavior and performance measures obtained under steady‐state laboratory conditions suggest that field observations are essential for informing approaches to quantifying locomotor performance in the laboratory.  相似文献

The role of the central histaminergic system in depression was studied by using swimming despair test in mice - a behavioural model of depression. In this test, immobility of mice reflects a state of depression. Intracerebral (ic) injection of histamine (50-200 micrograms) increased significantly the immobility. The H1-receptor blocker mepyramine (2.5-20 mg/kg ip) had no effect while H2-receptor blocker cimetidine (100-200 micrograms ic) caused a significant decrease in immobility. The histamine induced facilitation was blocked completely by cimetidine and antidepressant drugs-imipramine and desipramine, but remained unaffected in mice pretreated with mepyramine or atropine. The H2 agonist impromidine (20-40 micrograms ic) also enhanced significantly, the immobility which was blocked by cimetidine and antidepressant drugs. It has been concluded that central H2-receptors facilitate depression and antidepressant drugs block central H2-receptors.  相似文献

Campylobacter pylori, first isolated in 1982, is now recognized as a primary cause of acute gastritis in man, and there is substantial data suggesting that this organism also plays an important role in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcers. More recently, Campylobacter-like organisms and other morphologically distinct spiral bacteria have been isolated from gastric lesions in a variety of laboratory animal species. The zoonotic significance of C. pylori and other gastric spiral bacteria isolated from man as well as laboratory and domestic animals requires further study. An appreciation of the ecological and pathological role of gastric spiral bacteria in domestic and laboratory animals is an essential first step when considering the role and proper selection of animal models in the study of C. pylori gastroduodenal disease.  相似文献

There is a wealth of information in the published literature which describes a multitude of approaches to enriching the environment of laboratory animals. This paper attempts to review the various methods of enrichment through social contact, enhancement of the environment and diet, and improvements in husbandry. It attempts to place the various enrichment initiatives within the context of a laboratory which conducts regulatory toxicology, describes some of the experiences in the author's own laboratory and attempts to highlight those ideas which might prove practical to implement in the future. The aim is to demonstrate that a creative approach to environmental enrichment is indeed compatible with regulatory toxicology. It is hoped that this will encourage those responsible for the care and welfare of animals in such a laboratory to challenge historical practices and include environmental enrichment as a fundamental necessity of study design.  相似文献

The data concerning the types of analgesic drugs available and the experimental evidence for their efficacy in laboratory species are reviewed. The information is then extrapolated to the clinical situation to provide guidance as to methods of achieving effective analgesia in experimental animals. The most generally useful agent at present seems to be buprenorphine which can be used to provide effective, long lasting analgesia in a wide range of species.  相似文献

At the onset of the outdoor swimming season a new freshly-filled pool of balanced water is an essentially oligotrophic environment providing relatively low microbial growth potential. As the season progresses and the level of nutrients in the pool rises, the environment becomes increasingly more conducive to microbial growth. Antimicrobial agents must be added to pool water to eliminate pathogens and control non-pathogenic organisms (e.g. algae), which create undesirable visible effects. The use of chlorine, the traditional and most extensively used pool sanitiser, and alternative non-oxidising agents to control microbial activity, and the feasibility of searching for a novel pool sanitiser are considered.  相似文献
