The molluscan species composition and diversity associated with macrophytes was studied throughout 1 year at Menzel Jemil station (Bizerte lagoon, north‐west of Tunisia). A total of 7,539 individuals belonging to 13 species were collected. The molluscan assemblage was mainly composed of gastropods (98.12%, nine species), followed by bivalves (1.88%, four species). Hydrobia acuta ranked first with 49.97% of total abundance, followed by Bittium reticulatum (17.97%), Tritia mutabilis (11.38%), Haminoea navicula (8.98%), Phorcus articulatus (5.17%) and Cerithium vulgatum (3.94%). The large number of juvenile molluscs collected confirms the importance of macroalgae and seagrass for mollusc recruitment. Significant temporal variations of species richness, density and diversity indices of the mollusc assemblage have been observed during the year. Multivariate analyses applied to our data revealed significant relationships between the macrophyte composition and associated molluscan assemblage. The BIOENV analysis indicated that water temperature, phosphates concentration and macrophyte biomass were environmental variables most closely associated with the temporal variation of molluscan assemblage.  相似文献

The shells of most anomalodesmatan bivalves are composed of an outer aragonitic layer of either granular or columnar prismatic microstructure, and an inner layer of nacre. The Thraciidae is one of the few anomalodesmatan families whose members lack nacreous layers. In particular, shells of members of the genus Thracia are exceptional in their possession of a very distinctive but previously unreported microstructure, which we term herein “dendritic prisms.” Dendritic prisms consist of slender fibers of aragonite which radiate perpendicular to, and which stack along, the axis of the prism. Here we used scanning and transmission electron microscopical investigation of the periostracum, mantle, and shells of three species of Thracia to reconstruct the mode of shell calcification and to unravel the crystallography of the dendritic units. The periostracum is composed of an outer dark layer and an inner translucent layer. During the free periostracum phase the dark layer grows at the expense of the translucent layer, but at the position of the shell edge, the translucent layer mineralizes with the units typical of the dendritic prismatic layer. Within each unit, the c‐axis is oriented along the prismatic axis, whereas the a‐axis of aragonite runs parallel to the long axis of the fibers. The six‐rayed alignment of the latter implies that prisms are formed by {110} polycyclically twinned crystals. We conclude that, despite its distinctive appearance, the dendritic prismatic layer of the shell of Thracia spp. is homologous to the outer granular prismatic or prismatic layer of other anomalodesmatans, while the nacreous layer present in most anomalodesmatans has been suppressed.  相似文献

Electron microscope and electron diffraction studies of developing embryonic bovine enamel have revealed the organization of the organic matrix and the inorganic crystals. The most recently deposited inorganic crystals located at the ameloblast-enamel junction are thin plates, approximately 1300 A long, 400 A wide, and 19 A thick. During maturation of the enamel, crystal growth occurs primarily by an increase in crystal thickness. Statistical analyses failed to show a significant change in either the width or the length of the crystals during the period of maturation studied. Even in the earliest stages of calcification, the crystals are organized within the prisms so that their long axes (c-axes) are oriented parallel to the long axes of the prisms but randomly distributed about their long axes. With maturation of the enamel, the crystals become more densely packed and more highly oriented within the prisms. The organic matrix in decalcified sections of enamel is strikingly similar in its over-all organization to that of the fully mineralized tissue. When viewed in longitudinal prism profiles, the intraprismatic organic matrix is composed of relatively thin dense lines, approximately 48 A wide, which are relatively parallel to each other and have their fiber axes parallel to the long axes of the prisms within which they are located. Many of these dense lines, which have the appearance of thin filaments, are organized into doublets, the individual 48 A wide filaments of the doublets being separated by approximately 120 A. When observed in oblique prism profiles, the intraprismatic organic matrix is likewise remarkably similar in general orientation and organization to that of the fully mineralized tissue. Moreover, the spaces between adjacent doublets or between single filaments have the appearance of compartments. These compartments, more clearly visualized in cross- or near cross-sectional prism profiles, are oval or near oval in shape. Therefore, the appearance of the intraprismatic organic matrix (in longitudinal, oblique, and cross-sectional prism profiles) indicates that it is organized into tubular sheaths which are oriented with their long axes parallel to the long axes of the prisms in which they are located, but randomly oriented about their own long axes, an orientation again remarkably "blue printing" that of the inorganic crystals. The predominant feature of the walls of the tubular sheaths, when viewed in cross- or near cross-section, is that of continuous sheets, although in many cases closely packed dot-like structures of approximately 48 A were also observed, suggesting that the wall of the sheaths consists of a series of closely packed filaments. The 48 A wide dense lines (filaments) representing the width of the sheath wall were resolved into two dense strands when viewed in longitudinal prism profiles. Each strand was 12 A wide and was separated by a less electron-dense space 17 A wide. The intraprismatic organic matrix is surrounded by a prism sheath which corresponds in mineralized sections to the electron-lucent uncalcified regions separating adjacent prisms. Structurally, the prism sheaths appear to consist of filaments arranged in basket-weave fashion.  相似文献

The history of the Japanese Wisteria with the longest racemes is fully investigated, with a review of all the names applied to it. The name W. macrobotrys is shown to belong to a different cultivar group now widely grown under the names ‘Burford’, ‘Honko’ and ‘Hocker Edge’. The new combination W. floribunda f. multijuga (Van Houtte) J. Compton & G. Thijsse is made in order to establish long‐term nomenclatural stability. During the past several decades, corals worldwide have been affected by severe bleaching events leading to wide‐spread coral mortality triggered by global warming. The symbiotic Red Sea coral Stylophora pistillata from the Gulf of Eilat is considered an opportunistic ‘r’ strategist. It can thrive in relatively unstable environments and is considered a stress‐tolerant species. Here, we used a S. pistillata custom microarray to examine gene expression patterns and cellular pathways during short‐term (13‐day) heat stress. The results allowed us to identify a two‐step reaction to heat stress, which intensified significantly as the temperature was raised to a 32 °C threshold, beyond which, coping strategies failed at 34 °C. We identified potential ‘early warning genes’ and ‘severe heat‐related genes’. Our findings suggest that during short‐term heat stress, S. pistillata may divert cellular energy into mechanisms such as the ER‐unfolded protein response (UPR) and ER‐associated degradation (ERAD) at the expense of growth and biomineralization processes in an effort to survive and subsequently recover from the stress. We suggest a mechanistic theory for the heat stress responses that may explain the success of some species which can thrive under a wider range of temperatures relative to others.  相似文献

Octopus ocellatus is a small benthic species of octopus that is easy to rear and spawns large eggs during a short life cycle. These and other features of O. ocellatus may make it an advantageous subject for a broad range of behavioral studies, including those involving various types of learning. However, no type of learning has been studied in O. ocellatus. In a successive visual discrimination task, in which a ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ stimulus (white or black rectangle) was presented to a subject octopus and appropriate rewards or punishments were given to the subject, the rate of ‘correct’ responses (i.e., touches to the positive stimulus or refraining from the negative stimulus) gradually increased. Moreover, ‘observer’ octopuses that observed another octopus performing a visual discrimination task in which reward was also given to the ‘incorrect’ responses (touches to the negative stimulus) showed a higher ratio of incorrect responses in their test sessions. These results, coupled with the physical characteristics of O. ocellatus, indicate that this species is potentially suitable for neurogenetic and neuroembryological studies of learning.  相似文献

Although slugs and snails play important roles in terrestrial ecosystems and cause considerable damage on a variety of crop plants, knowledge about the mechanisms of plant immunity to molluscs is limited. We found slugs to be natural herbivores of Arabidopsis thaliana and therefore investigated possible resistance mechanisms of this species against several molluscan herbivores. Treating wounded leaves with the mucus residue (‘slime trail’) of the Spanish slug Arion lusitanicus increased wound‐induced jasmonate levels, suggesting the presence of defence elicitors in the mucus. Plants deficient in jasmonate biosynthesis and signalling suffered more damage by molluscan herbivores in the laboratory and in the field, demonstrating that JA‐mediated defences protect A. thaliana against slugs and snails. Furthermore, experiments using A. thaliana mutants with altered levels of specific glucosinolate classes revealed the importance of aliphatic glucosinolates in defending leaves and reproductive structures against molluscs. The presence in mollusc faeces of known and novel metabolites arising from glutathione conjugation with glucosinolate hydrolysis products suggests that molluscan herbivores actively detoxify glucosinolates. Higher levels of aliphatic glucosinolates were found in plants during the night compared to the day, which correlated well with the nocturnal activity rhythms of slugs and snails. Our data highlight the function of well‐known antiherbivore defence pathways in resistance against slugs and snails and suggest an important role for the diurnal regulation of defence metabolites against nocturnal molluscan herbivores.  相似文献

Reinvasion of pest animals after incomplete control is a major challenge for invasive species management, yet little is known about the behavioural and demographic categories of reinvaders or the mechanisms that drive population‐level responses to control. To understand the fine‐scale mechanisms of reinvasion, we examined changes in demography, movements and activity patterns of reinvading alien black rats Rattus rattus in the short (4 weeks) and longer term (3 months) following localised experimental pest removal. Using recovery and invasion theory, we tested three hypothesised mechanisms of reinvasion: the ‘in situ effect’, the ‘trickle effect’ and the ‘vacuum effect’. We created space for reinvasion by removing black rats from the core of replicate 1‐ha plots (short‐term experiment) and later by removing animals from the entire plot (longer‐term experiment). Reinvaders were characterised as dispersing juveniles, floaters or neighbours. Radio‐tracking quantified home range changes for adjacent resident animals (short‐term experiment only). In the short term, there was no net influx of rats after targeted removal. Radio‐tracked residents’ movements were highly variable and displayed no directional changes after nearby conspecifics were removed. However, in the longer term, removal led to slow population recovery through a mix of reinvading floaters, dispersing juveniles and shifting residents. These responses best support a hypothesis of reinvasion through a trickle effect, with rats being extremely mobile and having a high degree of population turnover, even in untreated sites. Our findings provide the first test of reinvasion theory at a small scale, demonstrating the importance of understanding the differing categories of reinvaders and mechanisms of reinvasion after population control. These mechanisms drive the rate of population recovery and, in turn, should help determine which strategy of pest control should be used, and the frequency with which they are implemented, in order to slow the recovery of pest populations.  相似文献

The crystallographic microstructure of Meretrix lusoria shells was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Crystallite sizes were determined by XRD analysis as 72 nm, which was quite similar to the 70 nm as measured by SEM. The shell comprised aggregates of hexagonal plates of aragonite (500 nm wide, 70 nm high) and organic matter. These plates were fourth-order units of an aragonitic crossed order lamellar structure. Subsequent TEM images showed the hexagonal plates’ nanostructure. The electron diffraction pattern of the fourth-order units revealed a consistent orientation of the hexagonal plates. The fourth-order lamellae (hexagonal crystallites) were piled up in the [0 0 1] direction to produce slender prisms (third-order lamellae), arranged mutually parallel, thereby forming a broad tablet (second-order lamellae). The second-order lamellae were piled up in different directions to form the first-order lamellae. The orientation level obtained from XRD and SEM images showed that the crossed lamellar layer was piled up curvilinearly, forming semi-circular growth lines. X-ray diffraction patterns of the cross-sections of the middle layer (vertical and parallel to the growth line) showed that the c axes of aragonite have a disposition of about 20° to the growth direction.  相似文献

This article asks what role local models of agency and subjectivity play in the structure and interpretation of informal economic practices, and how this influences the ways in which people narrate their behaviour to others. Exploring the use of a common Polish idiom for informal activities – kombinowanie – amongst villagers in the Carpathian Highlands, it argues that the term acts as a ‘master‐trope’ for local identity, providing villagers with a narrative model for asserting and broadcasting their social agency to peers. Furthermore, it shows how in this particular ethnographic context, the retelling of instances of informal or illegal activity as kombinowanie can be seen as part of a Highlander ‘poetics of self’, in that each manifestation of the term carries with it a series of implicit sociohistorical and normative meanings that relate to notions of ‘typical’ Górale (Highland) behaviour. By characterizing kombinowanie as a type of tactics, I open up the term for comparative analysis with other local conceptions of agency which value insubordination.  相似文献

Tension is a polysemic term used across South Asia to describe the strains and scrapes of life, like ‘worry’ or ‘stress’ in Euro-American discourse. Yet in the formerly agro-pastoralist and upwardly mobile Gaddi community of Himalayan India, it is used by women with the qualifying ghar ki – ‘household’ – to indicate a deeper disruption to bodily humours, intimate relations, and household materiality. This article takes ghar ki tension, with a particular focus on the layered qualifier ghar, as a window into the precarity of middle-class domestic life as it is experienced in the bodies of the women who pursue it. Rather than focusing on the communicative functions of women's distress within the household, this article looks to the relational, affective, and material ways in which women see their bodies and houses as mutually constituted and disrupted. This approach reveals how women's domestic labour is both a source of dignity and a burden. This burden is experienced in ghar ki tension, in bodily symptoms of overheating, and visits from supernatural beings. This article suggests that ghar ki tension might offer a novel way of looking at distress as the psychic and embodied cost of upward social mobility beyond the Gaddi context.  相似文献

Determining which factors contribute to the formation and maintenance of genetic divergence to evaluate their relative importance as a cause of biological differentiation is among the major challenges in evolutionary biology. In Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) two host strains have been recognized in the 1980s: the corn‐strain prefers maize, sorghum, and cotton, whereas the rice‐strain prefers rice and wild grasses. However, it is not clear to what extent these so‐called ‘strains’, which have also been called ‘host races’ or even ‘sibling species’, are really associated with host plants. Due to the indeterminate evolutionary status, we will use the term ‘host forms’ (sensu Funk). Here, we characterized populations collected from maize, rice, and wild grasses from three countries in South America. Using two mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) markers and 10 polymorphisms in the triose phosphate isomerase (Tpi) gene, we found various patterns of host association. Two hundred twenty‐seven nuclear amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) markers revealed significant genetic differentiation among populations, which was generally correlated to the host from which the larvae were collected. Using a multivariate discriminant analysis and a Bayesian clustering approach, we found that individuals could be grouped into 2–5 genetically distinct clusters, depending on the method. Together, our results indicate that although host‐associated differentiation is present in this species, it does not account for all observable genetic variation and other factors must be maintaining genetic differentiation between these forms. Therefore, the term ‘host strains’ should be abandoned and ‘host forms’ should be used instead for S. frugiperda.  相似文献

In our 2011 synthesis (Bowman et al., Journal of Biogeography, 2011, 38 , 2223–2236), we argued for a holistic approach to human issues in fire science that we term ‘pyrogeography’. Coughlan & Petty (Journal of Biogeography, 2013, 40 , 1010–1012) critiqued our paper on the grounds that our ‘pyric phase’ model was built on outdated views of cultural development, claiming we developed it to be the unifying explanatory framework for all human–fire sciences. Rather, they suggest that ‘historical ecology’ could provide such a framework. We used the ‘pyric transition’ for multiple purposes but did not offer it as an exclusive explanatory framework for pyrogeography. Although ‘historical ecology’ is one of many useful approaches to studying human–fire relationships, scholars should also look to political and evolutionary ecology, ecosystems and complexity theories, as well as empirical generalizations to build an interdisciplinary fire science that incorporates human, ecological and biophysical dimensions of fire regimes.  相似文献

The present study, conducted near Newcastle, Australia, used a blocked analysis of variance experimental design to compare initial nutrient concentrations and decomposition rates of Avicennia marina (grey mangrove) grown on sand and rock blast furnace slag. There were no significant differences ( ANOVA ; P > 0.05) in mean initial nutrient concentrations of total C, N and P for plants grown on the sand and slag substrates. A litterbag technique was used to estimate decomposition rates. After 360 days of incubation, repeated measures analysis did not identify significant differences between the substrates for the interaction term ‘substrate × time’ or the term ‘substrate’ for percentage weight loss or for C, N and P remaining. Avicennia marina on both substrates had nutrient characteristics and decomposition rates comparable to those found in the literature. Results suggest that initial nutrient concentration and decomposition rates are not dramatically influenced by the presence of slag.  相似文献

Mating decisions can vary considerably depending on individual experience, mate availability and nutritional status. Here, we applied short‐term dietary restrictions to adult female spiders that were well fed during the juvenile stage in an effort to understand whether and how brief periods of food shortage can influence male and female mating decisions and mating behaviour. To assess whether responses vary between closely related species, we conducted the same experiment on the dwarf spiders Oedothorax retusus and O. apicatus. During courtship and mating, males of both species offer secretion to females from glandular tissue in their prosoma. Females were subject to food shortage over a period of 3 wks (‘low‐diet’ treatment, LD) or fed regularly (‘high‐diet’ treatment, HD). We compared courtship probability, mating probability/behaviour, and reproductive output between dietary groups and species. In both Oedothorax species, females in the LD treatment were less likely to mate and more aggressive towards males. Furthermore, LD females produced egg sacs that were significantly lighter than were those of the HD females. Effects of food deprivation on copulation duration, gustatory behaviour and oviposition latency differed between species. Our study shows that short periods of dietary restriction during the adult stage can strongly affect mating behaviour and reproductive output with differences between closely related species.  相似文献

The recently described Lutz's stingray Hypanus berthalutzae is endemic to the Brazilian Province, including oceanic islands. Although it is expected to have life-history traits similar to the southern stingray H. americanus, little is known about its reproductive biology. Here we present the first observations of courtship behaviour (n = 4), copulation (n = 3) and an induced parturition of H. berthalutzae at the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, an insular Marine Protected Area from the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The mating event records included (1) ‘chasing/close following’, (2) ‘biting/precopulatory biting’, (3) ‘insertion/copulation’ and (4) ‘separation’. These results are especially relevant considering that records of reproductive behaviour in the wild are rare for elasmobranchs in general. Mating events occurred in different months, suggesting that the reproductive cycle of H. berthalutzae in this insular system is asynchronous, as observed for other stingray species in regions with favourable environmental conditions and abundant food throughout the year. The opportunistic documentation of the induced parturition allowed for direct nonlethal observation of the two pups at or near full term in late May. Although preliminary, these observations should be considered in future management plans as they provide relevant data about the life-history traits and mating behaviour of this endemic and threatened species.  相似文献

The taxonomic position of Blastodinium navicula Chatton and B. contortum Chatton, parasites of marine copepods, was investigated on the basis of morphological observations and molecular data. The life cycle of Blastodinium includes a parasitic stage, a trophont, and free‐swimming dinospores. The individual cells in the trophont, as well as the dinospores that they produced, were thecate. Dinospores of B. contortum and Bnavicula had peridinioid plate tabulation formula, demonstrating an affiliation to the order Peridiniales Heackel (subdivision Dinokaryota Fensome et al.). This systematic position is in contrast to current classifications, in which the order Blastodiniales Chatton is thought to represent an early evolutionary branch of the dinokaryote lineage. Small‐subunit rRNA gene sequences were generated from six Blastodinium individuals isolated from three different host species. In phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA genes, Blastodinium spp. branched with the typical dinoflagellates. Even though overall statistical support was low, the analyses suggested that Blastodinium spp. are late‐branching, dinokaryote dinoflagellates. Species currently included in Blastodiniales are all parasites, but they are morphologically and functionally diverse. Emerging molecular data also reveal high genetic diversity, and therefore, the taxonomy of the group requires reevaluation.  相似文献

Offspring solicit food from their parents through begging signals. Nestling skin and flange coloration are begging signals that appear to convey information about nestling need or condition, and several experiments have shown that modifications of nestling coloration affect parental allocation decisions. However, it is important to examine the short‐term changes in these signalling components in response to food constraints since such dynamic changes are required for signals to indicate condition or need. Using a food deprivation experiment, we tested whether flange and skin reflectance in European starling Sturnus vulgaris nestlings change after a three‐hour interval. We investigated whether flange and skin reflectance changed according to the predictions arising from the ‘signal of quality’ or ‘signal of need’ hypotheses on the function of begging signals. We found that flange carotenoid and UV reflectance changed according to the signal of quality hypothesis with nestlings in good condition increasing their signal expression in response to the food deprivation, whereas those in poor condition decreased their signal expression. With the use of vision modelling, we show that changes in flange reflectance are detectable by starling parents. In contrast, we found a correlation going in the opposite direction for changes in skin UV reflectance. Nestlings with low lipid reserves increased their reflectance compared to nestlings with high reserves. However, vision modelling showed that short‐term changes in skin UV reflectance are not large enough to be detectable by the parents. Our study shows that flange carotenoid and UV reflectance are dynamic components of begging with short‐term variations that can be used by parents as signals of nestling quality.  相似文献
