白蚁是最古老的社会性昆虫, 其社会性的维持需要信息素的相互作用。本文回顾了近年来国内外白蚁信息素研究的最新进展, 内容涉及白蚁踪迹信息素、 性信息素、 告警信息素和促食信息素的功能、 化学成分及产生信息素的外分泌腺。白蚁分泌信息素的腺体主要有背板腺、 腹板腺、 后腹板腺、 额腺和唾腺。绝大多数白蚁信息素是挥发性物质。白蚁在化学通讯上存在节俭策略, 即同一种化合物由不同的白蚁种类的不同外分泌腺分泌, 可具有不同的功能。总结了各类信息素在白蚁物种间、 同一物种的品级间和性别间的异同和作用方式, 强调了白蚁信息素的反应阈值、 最佳浓度、 有效期和物种特异性对其功能的影响。目前对白蚁信息素的研究尚处于起步阶段, 其研究成果对等翅目系统发育研究和白蚁防治具有重要的意义。文章最后展望了白蚁信息素在白蚁防治上的应用前景。  相似文献

The search for food in the French subterranean termite Reticulitermes santonensis De Feytaud is organized in part by chemical trails laid with the secretion of their abdominal sternal gland. Trail-laying and -following behavior of R. santonensis was investigated in bioassays. During foraging for food termites walk slowly (on average, 2.3 mm/s) and lay a dotted trail by dabbing the abdomen at intervals on the ground. When food is discovered they return at a quick pace (on average, 8.9 mm/s) to the nest, laying a trail for recruiting nestmates to the food source. While laying this recruitment trail the workers drag the abdomen continuously on the ground. The recruitment trail is highly attractive: it is followed within a few seconds, by more nestmates, and at a quicker pace (on average, 6.4 mm/s) than foraging trails (on average, 2.9 mm/s). The difference between foraging and recruitment trails in R. santonensis could be attributed to different quantities of trail pheromone. A caste-specific difference in trail pheromone thresholds, with workers of R. santonensis being more sensitive to trails than soldiers, was also documented: soldiers respond only to trails with a high concentration of trail pheromone.  相似文献

Abstract. Chemical signals from secretions of different exocrine glands modulate a variety of behavioural patterns in termite societies. These signals have multiple functions and may be interactive. During food exploitation workers of the African termite Schedorhinotermes lamanianus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) employ, on foraging trails, the secretion from the sternal gland both for orientation and recruitment to a food source. The secretion from the labial gland, released onto the food by gnawing termites, stimulates additional workers to gnaw at the same site, thereby forming aggregations of gnawing termites. An interaction between these two pheromones during food exploitation is demonstrated for the first time. The volatile signal from the sternal gland inhibits in a dose-dependent manner the non-volatile, highly persistent, signal from the labial gland. The development of gnawing aggregations is inhibited and established ones are dissolved. Behavioural evidence for the perception of both the volatile signal from the sternal gland by olfactory neurones and of the non-volatile signal from the labial gland by gustatory neurones on the antennae is given. The interaction of the two pheromones as a basis for the development of distinct commuting and gnawing zones on the food source, and as a means for a dynamic regulation of food exploitation, is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Workers of Crematogaster inflata possess the largest metapleural glands (relative to body size) known among ants, with reservoirs extending anteriorly up to the junction between the pro‐ and the mesothorax, and with over 1400 secretory cells on both sides together. This large secretory capacity is related to the gland's defensive function, which, in members of this species, is directed against larger arthropod and vertebrate enemies, and apparently not against microorganisms, in contrast to other ants, where the gland produces antibiotics. The gland is not equipped with any direct musculature. Secretion release is probably caused by contraction of the oblique longitudinal thorax muscles or by passive expulsion caused by external pressure.  相似文献

Summary InSchedorhinotermes lamanianus, size and cellular differentiation of the labial gland exhibit a caste-specific polymorphism. The acini of workers are composed of three distinct types of secretory cells, one of which is absent in soldiers and alates. The labial gland of workers releases a chemical signal for intraspecific communication. During the communal exploitation of a food source, labial gland secretion makes workers aggregate at gnawing sites where this signal is deposited. The tegumental epithelium of the outer dorsolateral region in the proximal part of the coxae in the mid‐ and hindlegs of both workers and queens of the ants Odontomachus rixosus and O. simillimus is differentiated into a conspicuous and hitherto unknown exocrine gland. The glandular cells display a clear microvillar differentiation of their apical cell membrane, and are lined with the tegumental cuticle, which in this part contains crack‐like channels perpendicular to its surface, that carry the glandular secretions to the outside. Apical microvilli support the transport of substances, and contain an extension of tubular smooth endoplasmic reticulum in their centre. The function of the gland may be that of providing lubricant substances to the articulation region of the generally heavily sclerotized ponerine ant species. The gland is also found in several other ponerine and amblyoponine species, but not in the ectatommine species studied. The foreleg coxae lack a basicoxal gland in all species examined, which may be explained by the more limited articulation between the thorax and the coxae in the forelegs compared to the mid‐ and hindlegs.  相似文献

We present a detailed behavioral analysis of the signals involved in recruitment of 11 syntopic Polyrhachis species from West Malaysia. We found a considerable variety of recruitment techniques, including social carrying behavior, tandem running, group recruitment, and a technique which we call leader-independent trail communication. The latter mode superficially resembles chemical mass communication (sensu Wilson, 1962). All these recruitment techniques involve mechanical invitation behavior inside the nest, comprising back-and-forth jerking or pulling movement often combined with a sideways waggling. However, not in all cases of leader-independent trail communication is a mechanical invitation behavior obligatory. The trail pheromone of all investigated Polyrhachis species originates from the hindgut. Only in the tandem running P. proxima do additional secretions from the poison gland appear to be involved in tandem calling.  相似文献

Summary Establishment and maintenance of foraging trails to an artificial nectar source by ten colonies ofParaponera davata (Fabr.) in Panama is reported. The first forager to locate the artificial nectar source was responsible for recruiting additional foragers and for marking trails to orient these foragers. More than half of the trail marking was performed by the first two ants to mark the path back to the colony, although up to 11 ants per colony per hour marked trails. The number of trail marks and the number of marking ants decreased through time, presumably as foragers learned the location of the artificial nectar source. Four categories of recruits were noted: markers, foragers, patrollers, and visitors.  相似文献

Summary In the intact, in vitro frog skin, isoproterenol (ISO) stimulates and amiloride-insensitive increase in short-circuit current (SCC) that can be localized to the exocrine glands and is associated with secretion of chloride. To determine which cells in the glands respond to stimulation we measured the intracellular electrolyte concentrations of the various cell types of the mucous and seromucous glands of the skin using freeze-dried cryosections and electron microprobe analysis. In the resting state, the various cell types of the glands have intracellular electrolyte concentrations similar to the epithelial cells of the skin. Exposure to amiloride (10–4m) has little effect on the concentration of Na and Cl in the cells of the glands. The effect of isoproterenol has two distinct phases. Analysis of glands in tissues frozen at the peak of the SCC response (13 min after addition of isoproterenol) shows that the only significant change is an increase in Na and Ca in a group of cells at the ductal pole of the acini of both gland types. These are termed gland cells. The duct cells and cells that secrete macromolecules did not show any significant changes at this timepoint. In the gland cells, after a one-hour exposure to isoproterenol the Na concentration is at prestimulation levels while Cl drops. There is also a smaller drop in Cl in the duct and skin epithelial cells. Ouabain, which can completely block the isoproterenol SCC response, has little short-term effect on Na and Cl in the control gland but accentuates the gain of Na and drop in Cl in the isoproterenol-treated condition. Bumetanide and, to a lesser extent, furosemide, also blocks the isoproterenol SCC response and causes a further drop in Cl. The results provide indirect evidence that a major portion of the ionic component of the gland secretion is produced by a distinct group of cells separate from those producing the macromolecular component and that the mechanism of secretion involves a Na:Cl coupled transport system linked to the activity of the basolateral Na pump.  相似文献

In the notostigmophoran centipedes, two pairs of vesicular glands have evolved. These paired glands are situated in the first and second trunk segment and open via cuticular ducts in the upper part of the particular pleura. The vesicular glands of Scutigera coleoptrata were investigated using light and, for the first time, electron microscopical methods. The glands consist of wide sac‐like cavities that often appear vesicular. The epithelia of both glands are identically structured and consist of numerous glandular units. Each of these units consists of four different cells: a single secretory cell, a small intermediary cell, and one proximal and one distal canal cell. The intermediary cell forms a conducting canal and connects the secretory cell with the canal cells. Proximally, the intermediary cell bears microvilli, whereas the distal part is covered with a distinct cuticle. The cuticle is a continuation of the cuticle of the canal cells. This investigation shows that the ultrastructure of glandular units of the vesicular glands is comparable to that of the glandular units of other epidermal glands in Chilopoda and Diplopoda, although the glands look completely different in the light microscope. Thus, it is likely that the vesicular glands and epidermal glands share the same ground pattern. With regard to specific differences in the cuticular lining of the intermediary cells, a common origin of epidermal glands in Myriapoda and Hexapoda is not supported. J. Summary The long-cheeked wasp Dolichovespula saxonica typically constructs exposed nests which can be reached by flying. Usually foragers do not walk on substrates in the close vicinity of the nests as cavity breeding wasps do (Steinmetz et al., 2002). Unexpectedly, when forced to walk outside the nest instead of flying in an artificial tunnel system, D. saxonica foragers lay a terrestrial trail and use it for orientation in the nest area in our experiments. 41% of the foragers followed the trail in a direction they were not accustomed to. We suggest that the foragers have employed the same orientation cues normally used for orientation in the close vicinity of the nest when approaching a free-hanging nest by flying, for example nest odour. Nest odour substances may have been transferred to the substrate as a trail as a consequence of foragers walking through the tunnels.Received 23 August 2002; revised 27 January 2003; accepted 30 April 2003.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Male oriental fruit moths do not fly upwind in a continuous uniform cloud of pheromone, but readily do so when the cloud is pulsed at 1 or 0.5/s or when a plume from a point source of pheromone is placed within the continuous cloud. It is suggested that males of moth species that require such fluctuating pheromone stimulation for upwind flight will normally receive it from a filamentous, point-source-produced plume. However, we hypothesize that upwind progress may cease close to the source due to excessively high emission rates or inappropriate blend ratios, when fluctuating sensory output becomes attenuated, despite higher actual molecular concentration fluctuations.  相似文献

Dogs have the ability to determine the direction of an odour trail left by a human. This study examined how much olfactory information from this trail is required by dogs to determine direction. Six dogs, able to determine direction, were tested on a 21 footstep trail laid on 21 individual carpet squares, one footstep per square, by the same individual wearing the same shoes. Dogs brought in at right-angles to the trail at its centre were able to correctly determine direction better than chance (P < 0.025). Dogs were unable to determine direction when the order of the footsteps was randomized by rearranging the order of the carpet squares. When the individual odour cue was removed, but ground disturbance left, dogs were unable to determine direction, indicating that it was the odour of the individual that was used to determine direction. In the final experiment the number of footsteps made available to the dog was reduced from 21 to 11 and then 9, 7, 5 and finally 3. Dogs were able to determine direction from 5 footsteps but not 3. It was calculated that it takes approximately 1-2 s for the odour information in footsteps to change to provide discernible information that can be used by dogs to determine direction. The process by which dogs may determine direction from odour cues is discussed.  相似文献

Paired, sac-like and typically large opisthonotal glands (syn. oil glands), mainly considered for chemical protection and communication, characterize the so-called 'glandulate Oribatida' which include the Parhyposomata, Mixonomata, Desmonomata and Brachypylina but also the Astigmata. Among these groups distinct evolutionary trends affect the morphology of glands and their secretion profiles, thereby rendering them highly informative characters with phylogenetic significance. One striking tendency, convergently occurring in a few glandulate groups, leads to the degeneration or even complete regression of opisthonotal glands. In this study, a first example of coherent evolutionary steps towards opisthonotal gland degeneration is described by using desmonomatan Camisiidae as a model: Opisthonotal glands in representatives of genus Platynothrus still show morphologically and chemically ancient conditions with fairly-well developed glandular reservoirs. Secretion patterns mainly consist of a characteristic set of terpenes and aromatics ('astigmatid compounds') as found in outgroups such as desmonomatan Trhypochthoniidae. Progressive states of regression of opisthonotal glands, along with a reduction of component-richness and amounts of secretions, occur in representatives of Heminothrus and, more conspicuously, in species of Camisia , most likely indicating a consistent evolutionary trend. This trend towards opisthonotal gland atrophy may be due to novel alternative and cheap strategies of passive defense in more-derivative camisiids – such as mechanical protection by encrustation of the cuticle – that possibly compensate for the lack of chemical defenses.  相似文献

Salamanders in the family Plethodontidae exhibit a unique tail‐straddle walk during courtship that can include the use of sexually dimorphic mental and caudal courtship glands. This study presents novel histological and fine structure data on mental glands and caudal courtship glands in Plethodon mississippi, Desmognathus conanti and Eurycea quadridigitata using both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study represents the first use of scanning electron microscopy to observe these glands. Both mental and caudal courtship glands were observed to vary seasonally in gland diameter and histology according to the breeding season of each species. Morphological variation was observed across the three species studied in both clustering and relative size of the glands compared to neighbouring mucous and granular glands. Hypertrophied mental glands are larger than mucous or granular glands in all species, but relationships among caudal courtship glands and other skin glands vary among species. In E. quadridigitata, active caudal courtship glands are larger than mucous and granular glands, but in D. conanti, caudal courtship glands are similar in size to granular glands and larger than mucous glands. In P. mississippi, caudal courtship glands are scattered among significantly larger granular glands and are similar in size to mucous glands.  相似文献

We used the ant species Myrmica sabuleti as a model to study the impact of electromagnetic waves on social insects' response to their pheromones and their food collection. We quantified M. sabuleti workers' response to their trail, area marking and alarm pheromone under normal conditions. Then, we quantified the same responses while under the influence of electromagnetic waves. Under such an influence, ants followed trails for only short distances, no longer arrived at marked areas and no longer orientated themselves to a source of alarm pheromone. Also when exposed to electromagnetic waves, ants became unable to return to their nest and recruit congeners; therefore, the number of ants collecting food increases only slightly and slowly. After 180 h of exposure, their colonies deteriorated. Electromagnetic radiation obviously affects social insects' behavior and physiology.  相似文献

The quick detection of domestic and peridomestic triatomines in their environments becomes difficult without the use of dislodgement substances that flush them out from their shelters. At present, tetramethrin 0.2% is being widely used in control programs. Although it is an efficient dislodging agent, its toxicity might affect the health of captured triatomines, of other insects and, to a lesser extent, of other animals, including humans. Here, we tested if semiochemicals released by disturbed adults of Triatoma infestans and/or Rhodnius prolixus can make larvae of the same species exit from their refuges. In a walking olfactometer we found that: 1) larvae of T. infestans were repelled by the odors released by disturbed adults of their own species and of R. prolixus, 2) larvae of R. prolixus did not change their behavior in the presence of odors released by adults of both species, and 3) activity levels were not modulated by these odors in any of both species. Besides, in pseudo‐natural conditions we found an increased flushing‐out activity of larvae of T. infestans when their shelters were sprayed with isobutyric acid or 3‐pentanol, and of larvae of R. prolixus when sprayed with 3‐methyl1butanol. We succeeded in this work to dislodge larvae of triatomines from artificial shelters using natural volatile compounds, allowing the capture of live bugs for further investigations (e.g., xenodiagnosis or genetic studies) and favoring ecological aspects (e.g., minimizing environmental insecticide‐contamination and non‐targeted mortality).  相似文献

We found a hitherto unknown gland in the trochanter of several ant species. The gland occurs at the proximal ventral part of the trochanter in all legs. It consists of a thickening of the tegumental epithelium, the lining cuticle of which is characterized by narrow vertical pores that lead the secretion to the outside. Its function is probably that of producing lubricant substances to allow optimal manoeuvrability of the articulation between the trochanter and the coxa.  相似文献
