Female CBA mice were mated to fertile CBA males, to vasectomized CBA males, to fertile C57BL males or to vasectomized C57BL males. After allogeneic or syngeneic mating the extent of thymic involution on the 10th day of pregnancy and pseudopregnancy was similar. Lumbar lymph node weight was not affected by pseudopregnancy but increased similarly in allogeneic and syngeneic pregnancies. Serum progesterone levels on the 10th day of pseudopregnancy were similar to those of non-pregnant females, and significantly lower than those of pregnant females. On the 4th to 7th days progesterone levels in pseudopregnant animals were equal to those in pregnant animals. Progesterone levels and thymic involution were similar in syngeneically and allogeneically pregnant females. Progesterone levels were negatively correlated with thymus weight but reached significance only when the mating was allogeneic. It is suggested that there is an interaction between progesterone concentrations and the degree of thymic involution during pregnancy.  相似文献

Two studies were performed to evaluate early pregnancy diagnosis by transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS), using a 7.5-MHz transducer in ewes. In the first study, the objectives were to determine the earliest date that a reliable pregnancy diagnosis could be made (percentage of ewes detected pregnant between days 15 and 20 after mating). In the second study, the objective was to confirm the findings of the first study using a randomized controlled trial. In both studies, the ewes were restrained in dorsal recumbency, using a special chute that maintained the pelvis at an angle of 30–35° lower than the head. In the first study, 30 Suffolk ewes were synchronized and maintained with 2 rams for 5 days. Each ewe was subjected to the first TRUS on day 15 after mating and daily thereafter until day 20 (estrus = day 0). Pregnancy was defined as the presence of an embryo or extra-embryonic membranes. The percentage of ewes detected pregnant at days 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 were 0% (0/30), 26.7% (8/30), 86% (24/30), 90% (27/30), 96.7% (29/30) and 100% (30/30), respectively (P < 0.001). In the second study, 390 TRUS examinations (TRUS-1) were performed on ewes from 10 to 50 days after mating in a breeding program (group mating, hand mating, cervical and intrauterine AI; breeding group; n = 270) or with vasectomized rams (vasectomized group; n = 120). The breeding date and the status of breeding were unknown to the operator. Thirty of these ewes were mated with vasectomized rams and used repetitively four times as the non-pregnant control group. All females had a subsequent TRUS (TRUS-2) between 7 and 30 days after the TRUS-1 examination. The second TRUS was used as the standard test against which the performance of the TRUS-1 was compared. The percentage of ewes correctly diagnosed at day 15 or less, days 16, 17, 18, and 19 in the breeding group were 0% (0/29), 31.3% (5/16), 40% (8/20), 70% (7/10), and 100% (14/14), respectively (P < 0.001). All the diagnoses of ewes more than 20 days following mating in the breeding group, were correctly predicted (n = 181), as well as all ewes from the vasectomized group (n = 120). It could thus be concluded that the earliest pregnancy diagnosis using a 7.5-MHz transducer by transrectal route based on the presence of positive signs of pregnancy is at day 16 and the maximum sensitivity and negative predictive value was reached at day 20 following breeding.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of reproduction with 45 wild African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) (36 females and 9 males) during the nine years from 1981 to 1989 under indoor individually-caged conditions. In 206 cases of menstruation observed, menstrual discharge lasted for 2.5 +/- 1.2 days in cycles of 22-48 days, and the length of each menstrual cycle was 31.2 +/- 6.5 days. Females who had regular menstrual cycles were subjected to "one-to-one timed mating"; females and males were put together on a one-to-one basis daily only for a certain period of time on and after the day of ovulation. Females who had irregular menstrual cycles or had no menstruation were subjected to "every-other-day mating"; females and males were put together on a one-to-one basis every other day for at least 16 weeks. The pregnancy rate (No. of pregnant females/No. of mated females) by one-to-one timed mating was 48.9% (116/237); 2.0 mating trials were needed to obtain one case of pregnancy. On the other hand, the pregnancy rate (No. of pregnant females/No. of mating trials) by every-other-day mating was 96% (48/50). Females who delivered normally totaled 129. The mean gestation period was 165 days when males, weighing 343 g on average at birth, were delivered, and 166 days when females, weighing 318 g on average at birth, were delivered. The male and female newborns were nursed for 131 and 138 days, respectively, on average. Details are summarized in Table 3. This paper also reports 23 cases of abortion, 6 stillbirths, and 6 cases of Caesarean section, by which three live fetuses and three dead fetuses were obtained.  相似文献

Injection of 7000 i.u. PMSG induced oestrus in 7 camels during the last part of seasonal anoestrus. Mature follicles developed and a CL was formed after fertile mating. However, pregnancy was not maintained by Day 60 in the 3 females detected as pregnant by rectal palpation and increased progesterone concentrations at Day 50. A single male camel mated with 4 of the females 2-16 days after the PMSG injection, and 2 or 3 matings occurred. The failure of pregnancy after induction of oestrus and mating during seasonal anoestrus was probably due to inadequate luteal function.  相似文献

This paper describes usefulness of the ultrasonographical device (USD) for the diagnosis of pregnancy and the observation of fetal growth in the squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) conceived under group breeding conditions. Pregnancy was diagnosed on the basis of the detection of gestational sac (GS) in the uterus. The GS was first detected 127 +/- 10 days before delivery. The heart beat of embryo was detected around 114 days before delivery. It was able to judge conditions of fetal growth by measuring the size of GS and the biparietal diameter. No difference in uterine size between nonpregnant and pregnant animals was observed 135 days before delivery.  相似文献

Human females, unlike most mammals, are sexually active outside of fertile periods. This decoupling of sexual behavior from its conceptive function has had an enormous impact on human social relationships, and yet we know little about why there was selection for nonconceptive mating. Here we examine one form of nonconceptive mating, the mating that occurs during pregnancy or post‐conceptive (PC) mating, in wild western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). Using a near complete mating record for five females during gestation, we show that pregnant females varied in the timing and frequency of mating, and used PC mating conditionally, synchronizing copulations to occur on days when other females mated, and refraining from mating for lengthy periods when no other females mated. As pregnant females mated exclusively with the same male before and after conception, and mated in response to group female (and not male) behavior, we conclude that western gorillas used PC mating as a form of female competition, and not to confuse paternity or to obtain immediate benefits from the male, as suggested earlier. The male initiated copulations preferentially with females of high rank, rather than distinguishing between pregnant and cycling females. Therefore, PC mating appears to be a strategy by which high‐ranking pregnant females attempt to minimize male interest in other females, while reinforcing their own status and potentially delaying conception in others. These findings indicate that female‐mating competition is more important than considered earlier, and may be a factor in the evolution of nonconceptive mating in humans. Am. J. Virgin females of Lucilia cuprinararely lay eggs, whereas mated females do so readily. This effect of mating is due entirely to increased readiness to lay, and not to any effect on ovarian development. An investigation was made of how readiness to lay was affected by matings which differed in terms of the male's chemical and mechanical contribution. Individual males were mated, during 1 day, to a succession of females whose readiness to lay was determined 1 or 8 days after mating. On both days, the proportion of females laying was inversely related to the number of females with which the male had previously mated. A high proportion of females that had mated with previously unmated or oncemated males laid at both 1 and 8 days after mating. However, this proportion tended to decline between day 1 and day 8 in females that had mated with males with two or more previous matings, and this effect was most evident in females mated with males that had previously mated with four or more females. When matings were manually terminated as soon as coupling had occurred, the proportion laying remained as low as in virgins. This proportion progressively increased as mating duration increased from 2 to 6 min. The proportion that laid after mating terminated at 6 or 8 min was as high as that for females from full-term matings (mean duration, 12.5 min). The results are generally similar to those obtained in parallel experiments on the effect of mating on sexual receptivity in this species and, therefore, indicate that the physiological bases for the two effects of mating might be the same.  相似文献

Rats were androgenized by injection of 50 micrograms testosterone propionate on the 5th day after birth and when adult were treated with 5 i.u. PMSG; some of the animals were mated. Serum was obtained daily and the concentrations of progesterone, 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone and prolactin, estimated by radioimmunoassays, were compared to values found for mated, but not ovulating, androgenized females and those for normal pregnant females. Ovulation and luteinization of follicles occurred. The concentration of progesterone increased after the injection of PMSG and remained elevated for at least 10 days; mating did not alter the progesterone levels. The concentration of 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone was also elevated but the ratio of the level of progesterone to this steroid was generally greater than unity. Prolatin levels were elevated in the rats which ovulated. It is concluded that the corpora lutea induced in androgenized females by PMSG are functional and maintained.  相似文献

This work examines the influence of mating on ovarian follicle development in Triatoma infestans. The observations were carried out on both virgin and mated females, which were killed at various times after their emergence. There was no difference in the ovarian development of both experimental groups during the first gonadotrophic cycle. By the 7th day mated females as well as virgin females showed vitellogenic oocytes. The coriogenesis and ovulation process began on the 13th day after imaginal moulting. However we could observe that egg-laying was dependent on mating. Mated females laid eggs whereas virgin females did not lay eggs. However ovarian production was significantly greater in the mated females. It is suggested that in T. infestans mating stimulates egg-laying but it does no influence the oogenesis and ovulation process.  相似文献

Mechanisms producing inhibition of remating in mated female Mediterranean fruit flies Ceratitis capitata, were investigated by matings with surgically altered males. Comparison of remating by females mated with either intact control males or males with a shortened penis, showed that ejaculate or a physical stimulus of penis insertion caused remating inhibition for at least 10 days after first mating. Remating frequency at two days after mating was significantly higher in females mated to castrated (spermless) males than in females mated to sham-operated control males. This difference disappeared by day four after mating, indicating that sperm cause a shorter-term inhibition of remating than does a normal first mating. Other factors in addition to sperm must therefore play a role in inhibition of remating.  相似文献

A series of experiments based on 150 newly mated, uni- and multi-parous Mongolian gerbils provided no evidence for the existence of pregnancy blocking due to a strangle male effect. The reduced level of fertility observed was attributed to stressful factors at critical times in the pregnancy. Treatment with 10 i.u. PMSG on the day following mating interrupted pregnancy and the majority of females mated again within 4 days.  相似文献

1 Although management of the oriental beetle Anomala orientalis (Waterhouse) by mating disruption shows promise across a range of agricultural systems, relatively little is known about aspects of the reproductive biology of this species relevant to its management. We studied the effects of delayed mating on several aspects of the oviposition behaviour and biology of the oriental beetle using females mated in the laboratory at 4–13 days posteclosion. 2 Females exhibited a gradual decline in fecundity with increased age at mating that was largely a function of a decline in duration of the oviposition period, as well as lower female fertility: females mated at 11 days were less likely to lay any fertile eggs. However, egg fertility did not vary with female age at mating. 3 Because mating delay did not affect longevity, females mated at older ages experienced decreased oviposition periods; however, females laid more eggs per day with increased age at mating, which partially offset shorter oviposition periods. 4 A mating delay of ≥ 6 days relative to females mated within the first day of reaching sexual maturity resulted in an approximately 35–50% lower mean fecundity. 5 These results suggest that, for mating disruption to be a successful management tool for the oriental beetle, mating must be prevented rather than delayed. We compare the findings of the present study with the published research on delayed mating in moths and discuss the importance of these results in relation to management of the oriental beetle using female sex pheromones.  相似文献

Female codling moth ( Cydia pomonella ) were mated either on the day of emergence or 2 or 4 d after emergence. Oviposition was checked daily and fertility (% egg hatch) of eggs laid 1–4 d and 5 + d after mating was determined from a sub-sample of females in each treatment. From these data, net reproduction rate (R0) was calculated. the effect of delayed mating of males was also determined. Mean fecundity, fertility and net reproduction rate of females mated 4 d after emergence were significantly lower than for females mated either on the day of emergence (day 0) or 2 d after emergence. There were no significant differences between the three treatments in terms of the proportion of females that mated or female longevity, although there was a trend towards increased longevity with increasing delays in mating. Mean longevity of unmated females was significantly greater than that of mated females. Oviposition pattern was similar in females regardless of when they were mated and in all cases maximum oviposition took place 2 d after mating. There was no effect on the fecundity of 2 d old females or on the fertility of their eggs when they were paired with either 2 or 6 d old males. the significance of these findings in relation to control of codling moth by mating disruption is discussed.  相似文献

The influence of mating on the extent to which males are attracted to females in Trigonotylus caelestialium (Heteroptera: Miridae) was examined. No differences in attraction of males to mated and virgin females were observed within 3–5 h of mating, but males became less attracted to females 1 to 2 days after the first mating. The difference in male attraction to mated vs virgin females disappeared at 4 days after mating. These results indicate that reduced attraction of males to mated females occurs after a certain time interval, and persists for a few days. Furthermore, males were less attracted to females that had mated with virgin vs recently mated males, i.e. males that had just mated with another female at 1 and 2 days after mating. The ejaculate expenditure of recently mated males was less than that of virgin males. Hence, the amount of male ejaculate transferred to females during mating, rather than the act of mating, might influence the attraction of males to females. The results demonstrate that mating reduces the attraction of males to females in T. caelestialium on the basis of direct observation of male behavior.  相似文献

In an effort to elucidate T cell reactivity toward paternal major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens during pregnancy, the ability of pregnant mice to develop alloreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) was studied in individual multiparous females mated with MHC congeneic strains of B10 background. Spleen cells obtained from B10.BR females mated to allogeneic males manifested strikingly higher CTL than those from animals mated to syngeneic males or from virgins; syngeneically mated animals were equivalent to virgin controls in CTL responses. The augmented CTL response in allogeneic pregnancy was detected not only by stimulation with the paternal MHC antigens but also by an unrelated MHC haplotype. However, this augmentation was found only during pregnancy in that 2-5 days after the delivery the CTL activity in allopregnant animals returned to a level comparable to that of virgin controls. No suppressor cells were detected at this stage. These observations suggest that maternal T cells recognize MHC disparity with the fetus in some way during pregnancy. Anti-MHC antibodies, immunoglobulin (Ig) M, and IgGs of all subclasses were not detected in these animals throughout multiple pregnancies.  相似文献

Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity directed against paternal alloantigen was examined in allogeneically pregnant mice using various allogeneic combinations. The spleen cells from pregnant C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice mated with BALB/c (H-2d) male mice generated less anti-H-2d CTL after in vitro sensitization than those from unpregnant or syngeneically mated C57BL/6 mice. Different allogeneic combinations including the incompatibility at only D region of H-2 or minor histocompatibility loci were effective for downregulating the anti-paternal CTL activity in pregnancy. The downregulation of anti-paternal CTL activity induced by allogeneic pregnancy occurred at day 10 to day 18 of pregnancy, most extensively at day 14. The allogeneic pregnancy also downregulated the allogeneic CTL activities that had been amplified by injecting alloantigens before mating.  相似文献

The date of the beginning of mating behaviour in males and females, the rate of insemination and the increasing of bloodsucking activity of females were studied in natural environments. Over 80% of females mated on the 3-4th day after emergence; after fertilization their behaviour changed from looking for males for coupling to looking for ones for a prey. The male swarming began on the 5th day after emergence and simultaneously the appearance of inseminated females was observed. The places of mating of males and females were investigated. It was established that coupling took place in swarms with swarming males and out of swarms with freely flying males.  相似文献

Abstract. The mate choice, courtship and oviposition behaviour of laboratory-reared and field-collected Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) were compared. In laboratory cultures in Southampton the duration of male calling activity in small leks increased gradually from 1-2h at 5 days old to up to 7 h at 10 days. This finding correlates with previous reports on the time at which male salivary glands, which are believed to produce sex pheromone, are fully developed. Wild flies which emerged from infested fruits in Brazil began to oviposit on the day they mated, whereas in laboratory flies oviposition began 1 day following the first mating. Both types of fly usually defended their position on a particular fruit throughout the day, and re-mated with either virgin or mated males. There was no significant difference in mating duration. Females did not copulate before the mean age (±SE) of 16.8±0.9 days. For both types of flies mating initiation occurred in the first 2h of photophase, with virgin females choosing mainly mated males. The average number of matings in the laboratory was three for females and four for males, and the interval between matings in females was significantly increased after the second mating. It is suggested that the tendency of virgin females to mate with mated males will lead to increased fitness, as males are on average 48 days old at their second mating. The potential life span of around 200 days for both sexes would allow adults to bridge the gap between seasonally available fruits in warm-temperate and sub-tropical South America.  相似文献

The information about aspergillosis locations in the reproductive organ is scarce. This short paper deals with aspergillosis in the dog genital tract with hyphae present in semen. There are two therapy schemes used in visceral mycoses, non-invasive treatment and surgical intervention. Considering the future reproductive career of the dog, we decided on antifungal drugs administration. Based on the microbiological results, we administered amoxycillin with clavulonate (Synulox 500mg, twice daily) orally. Itraconazole was used as an antimycological agent (Orungal, 100mg, twice daily) every other week. In 8th week of therapy no Aspergillus spp. growth was noted, yet slight Penicillium growth was observed. After 12 weeks of treatment, no fungus growth was present. Neither spores or hyphae were seen in the microscopic examination. Three months after the termination of the therapy, the dog mated with two females. In one case, unifetal pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasound examination on day 42 after mating. Due to purulent discharge on day 45 after mating, the owner decided to terminate the pregnancy. In the other case, severe pyometra appeared 12 days after the second mating and the owner decided to put the female to sleep. The pathogen eradication from the ejaculates may be treated as a serious success, yet the lack of litters after mating calls for an explanation and consequences of Aspergillus spp. infection need to be considered.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of delayed mating on two successive generations of blackheaded fireworm, Rhopobota naevana Hübner (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a pest of cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton (Ericaceae). The first (spring) generation produces eggs that hatch soon after oviposition, whereas the second (summer) generation produces mostly diapause eggs. Unmated female and male moths were placed together on the first, second, fourth, sixth, or eighth day after emergence. In the first generation, incidence of mating was greatest in the 1-, 2-, and 4-day treatments then declined as female survival decreased. In the second generation, incidence of mating was lowest in the 1-day treatment and greatest in the 2-, 4-, and 6-day treatments. Most second generation females in the 6- and 8-day treatments survived to mate. The mean oviposition period was 2.6 days for first generation females and 4.1 days for second generation females. Fecundity of singly mated females in both generations declined as age at mating advanced, but the pattern of decline differed between generations. First generation females that were mated on the first or second day laid more eggs than those mated on the fourth, sixth, or eighth day, and the number of infertile eggs increased as age at mating advanced. Fecundity of second generation females declined more gradually and the number of infertile eggs was greatest for females mated on the first, sixth, or eighth day. A consequence of the marked decline in fecundity due to mating delays in the first generation was that mean fecundity of the entire group of first generation females was ca. 13% less than that of the group of second generation females. On cranberry farms, pheromone-mediated mating disruption can prevent or delay mating of blackheaded fireworm. If the frequency of disrupted (prevented and delayed) matings is similar in the two generations, fewer eggs will be laid in the first generation than in the second.  相似文献
