Juvenile American shad Alosa sapidissima were subjected to isothermal transfers into sea water (salinity 24)‘early’(1 September; 24° C) and ‘late’(10 November; 10° C) in the autumn migratory season. Early acclimation resulted in a modest osmotic perturbation that recovered rapidly. Haematocrit declined by 14% at 24 h, recovering within 48 h. Plasma osmolality increased by 6% at 4 h, recovering within 8 h. Early acclimation caused a two‐fold increase in gill Na+, K+‐ATPase activity by 24 h and a four‐fold increase by 4 days. The number of chloride cells on the primary gill filament increased two‐fold by 4 days. Chloride cells on the secondary lamellae rapidly decreased from 22 cells mm?1 to <2 cells mm?1 within 4 days. Late acclimation resulted in a severe and protracted osmotic perturbation. Haematocrit levels declined by 23% at 4 days, recovering by 14 days. Plasma osmolality increased by 36% by 48 h, recovering by 4 days. Initial gill Na+, K+‐ATPase activity was two‐fold greater than in ‘early’ fish and did not change during acclimation. Initial numbers of chloride cells on the primary filament were two‐fold greater than ‘early’ fish and did not increase during acclimation. Initial number of chloride cells on the secondary lamellae was five‐fold greater than ‘early’ fish (116 v. 22 cells mm?1) and declined to negligible numbers over 14 days. Differences between initial measures for ‘early’ and ‘late’ fish reflect previously described physiological changes associated with migration. These data indicate that late migrants face a greater physiological challenge during seawater acclimation than early migrants. Physiological performance apparently limits the observed duration of autumnal migration.  相似文献

A series of Claisen rearrangements was undertaken in order to find a replacement for Lilial (=3‐(4‐(tert‐butyl)phenyl)‐2‐methylpropanal), a high‐tonnage perfumery ingredient with a lily‐of‐the‐valley odour, which is a CMR2 material [1]. 5,7,7‐Trimethyl‐4‐methyleneoctanal ( 10 ), the synthesis of which is described, became the main lead. It possesses an odour which is very close to that of Lilial but lacks its substantivity. Aldehydes with higher molecular weights than that of 10 were, therefore, synthesised in order to boost substantivity and to understand the structural requirements for a ‘Lilial’ odour. The aldehydes were obtained via Claisen rearrangements of ‘exo‐methylidene’ vinyl ethers, allenyl vinyl ethers, or allenyl allyl ethers. Alternatively, coupling of terminal alkynes with allyl alcohols led to the desired aldehydes. Derivatives of 10 and their sila analogues were also synthesised. Two previously reported non‐synonymous coding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of bovine stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (delta‐9‐desaturase) (SCD) (c.878C>T) and fatty acid synthase (FASN) (g:17924A>G) were assessed for their associations with 72 individual and 12 groups of fatty acids in brisket adipose tissue of 223 Canadian commercial cross‐bred beef steers. It was found that the ‘CC’ genotype of the SCD SNP was significantly associated with lower concentrations of saturated fatty acids (SFA) including 10:0, 14:0 and 20:0, higher concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids including 9c‐14:1, 12c‐16:1 and 13c‐18:1, higher concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) including 9c,15c‐18:2, 10c,12c‐18:2, 11c,13t‐18:2 and 12c,14t‐18:2, but lower concentrations of other PUFA of 9c,13t/8t,12c and 20:2n‐6 (P < 0.05). The ‘AA’ genotype of the FASN SNP was significantly associated with higher concentrations of SFAs of 10:0, 12:0, 13:0, 14:0 and 15:0, lower concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids of 9c‐18:1 and 20:3n‐6, and higher concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids of 9c‐14:1 and 12c‐16:1 (P < 0.05). Significant epistatic effects between the SCD and FASN SNP genotypes were also found for several fatty acids including 10:0, 23:0, 6t/7t/8t‐18:1, 12t‐18:1, 13t/14t‐18:1, 16t‐18:1, total trans18:1 and 9c,13t/8t,12c‐18:2 (P < 0.05). These results further suggest that SCD and FASN are strong candidate genes influencing fatty acid composition in beef cattle.  相似文献

During the period from 2010 to 2013 preharvest symptoms were detected on different cultivars of sweet orange in six orchards in Catania, Siracusa and Enna provinces, Southern Italy. A total of 56 monosporic fungal isolates were obtained, and among these, 44 were identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and 12 as Ckarstii through morphological and molecular analysis. PCR with primers ITS1 and ITS4, primers TubGF1 and TubGR specific for β‐tubulin gene, primers GDF‐GDR, specific for Glyceraldehyde‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene, were used to confirm the identification of Colletotrichum isolates from citrus. The ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2 region, a portion of approximately 500 bp of β‐tubulin gene and a fragment of 220 bp of GAPDH gene of the isolates were sequenced and analysed with the BLASTn program. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by pathogenicity tests carried out on fruit of ‘Tarocco Scirè’ and ‘Tarocco Nucellare’ with representative isolates of Cgloeosporioides and Ckarstii. Field surveys and pathogenicity tests revealed significant differences in fruit susceptibility between ‘Tarocco Scirè’ and ‘Tarocco Nucellare’ and in virulence between the fungal species. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the emergence of Colletotrichum spp. causing anthracnose in preharvest conditions.  相似文献

A standardized single‐stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) procedure is proposed as an alternative to the time‐consuming biological characterization of Barley yellow dwarf virus‐PAV (BYDV‐PAV) isolates. Using this procedure, six of 21 overlapping regions used to scan the viral genome gave patterns specific to ‘4E’ (avirulent) or ‘4T’ (‘4E’‐derived virulent) isolates. The calibration of samples and integration of SSCP patterns corresponding to the nucleotide region 1482–2023 allowed the estimation of PT values that reflect the proportions of a ‘4T’‐specific band. Analysis of the biological (area under the pathogen progress curve) and molecular (PT) data suggested a positive linear relation between these variables. Moreover, sequence analysis of the nucleotide region 1482–2023 highlighted the presence of a nucleotide polymorphism (C/A1835) which can be considered as a candidate for virus–host interactions linked to the monitored virulence. According to these parameters, PT values associated with ‘4E’‐ and ‘4T’‐derived populations show that: (i) long‐term infection of a BYDV‐PAV isolate on the ‘TC14’ resistant host leads to the fixation of virulent individuals in viral populations; and (ii) the introduction of susceptible hosts in successive ‘TC14’ infections results in the maintenance of low virulence of the populations. Thus, the presented study demonstrates that SSCP is a useful tool for monitoring viral populations during the host adaptation process. The described impact of host alternation provides new opportunities for the use of the ‘TC14’ resistance source in BYDV‐resistant breeding programmes. This study is part of the global effort made by the scientific community to propose sustainable alternatives to the chemical control of this viral disease.  相似文献

Perfumes have always been products of great importance, mainly composed of natural, valuable and vegetal raw materials. Today, some of them have completely disappeared in perfumery, even though they are part of our cultural heritage and were commonly used in the past. Balm of Judea is one of the most noble, rare and fascinating ingredient long used in perfumery and medicine, that is missing today. After years of research, we collected a resin and an essential oil (steam distillation of fresh aerial parts) from Commiphora gileadensis (L.) C.Chr . native from Saudi Arabia and cultivated in Israel. The aims of this study were to i) identify the main reasons of the loss of the balm of Judea, ii) characterize the volatile composition of the resin and the essential oil and iii) evaluate their olfactory profile and assess their biological activity. Eighty‐three compounds were identified in the resin, by a combination of GC‐MS and GC/FID techniques, using direct injection and HS‐SPME. α‐Pinene (24.0 %), sabinene (43.8 %), β‐pinene (6.3 %) and cymene (3.6 %) were the main identified compounds, giving an intense, terpenic and lemony smell to the resin. Anti‐inflammatory, wound‐healing and whitening activities were highlighted. Sabinene (22.7 %), terpinen‐4‐ol (18.7 %), α‐pinene (14.4 %) and cymene (13.6 %) were identified as the main components of the essential oil, giving a spicy, woody and lemony fragrance. Anti‐inflammatory and whitening activities were emphasized.  相似文献

The effects of cutting frequency and cutting height on broad‐leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius) in Lolium perenne‐based agricultural grassland at two levels of fertiliser input were investigated at North Wyke, Devon, UK. Two micro‐plot field experiments, containing immature dock plants at uniform densities, with a factorial design, were used to compare: (a) ‘organic’ and ‘low‐input’ fertilisation, i.e. cattle slurry only vs slurry plus mineral fertiliser (NPK at 100‐0‐64 kg ha?1 yr?1), (b) cutting heights of 5–6 cm vs 10–12 cm, and (c) four harvesting frequencies representative of different grassland management practices (regular 4‐weekly cutting, a ‘hay‐stage’ cutting, and two treatments with ‘silage‐stage’ cutting). Expt 1 was established in 1995 with 13 dock plants m?2 (from excised dock‐root sections) and Expt 2 established in 1996 with 25 plants m?2 (as seed‐grown plug plants). Treatments were assessed over the 2 subsequent years to determine treatment effects on total herbage dry matter (DM) yield and dock DM yield, and on in‐situ measures of dock ramets. In both experiments, total DM yield was increased by 1.0–2.01 ha?1 yr?1 for treatments receiving NK fertiliser; the proportion of dock was also higher than from slurry‐only treatments. In Expt 1, the dock ramet density, mean dock ramet height, mean leaf length and numbers of dock leaves per m2 were also greater on NK fertilised treatments in autumn of yr 1. Height of cut had no consistent effect on dock yield, but dock ramet density and leaf density in autumn were greater on the 5–6 cm than the 10–12 cm cutting treatment, Expt 2 only. In yr 2 of both experiments cutting at 4‐weekly intervals resulted in less dock in the herbage than hay‐stage cutting and, particularly in Expt 1, there were associated differences in leaf density and ramet height in autumn; silage‐stage treatments were intermediate. Results are discussed in relation to requirements for management options where there is a need to avoid or reduce herbicides.  相似文献

The study was envisaged to assess the extent of normally uncultivable endophytic bacteria in field papaya plants and in vitro established cultures adopting cultivation vs molecular analysis and microscopy. Surface‐sterilized axillary shoot‐buds of papaya ‘Arka Surya’ revealed high bacterial diversity as per 16S rRNA metagene amplicon sequencing (6 phyla, 10 classes, 21 families) with an abundance of Pseudomonas (Gammaproteobacteria), which also formed a common contaminant for in vitro cultured field explants. Molecular analysis of seedling shoot‐tip‐derived healthy proliferating cultures of three genotypes (‘Arka Surya’, ‘Arka Prabhath’, ‘Red Lady’) with regular monthly subculturing also displayed high bacterial diversity (11–16 phyla, >25 classes, >50 families, >200 genera) about 12–18 months after initial establishment. ‘Arka Surya’ and ‘Red Lady’ cultures bore predominantly Actinobacteria (75–78%) while ‘Arka Prabhath’ showed largely Alphaproteobacteria corroborating the slowly activated Methylobacterium sp. Bright‐field direct microscopy on tissue sections and tissue homogenate and epi‐fluorescence microscopy employing bacterial DNA probe SYTO‐9 revealed abundant intracellular bacteria embracing the next‐generation sequencing elucidated high taxonomic diversity. Phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states‐ PICRUSt‐ functional annotation suggested significant operational roles for the bacterial‐biome. Metabolism, environmental information processing, and genetic information processing constituted major Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes KEGG attributes. Papaya stocks occasionally displayed bacterial growth on culture medium arising from the activation of originally uncultivable organisms to cultivation. The organisms included Bacillus (35%), Methylobacterium (15%), Pseudomonas (10%) and seven other genera (40%). This study reveals a hidden world of diverse and abundant conventionally uncultivable cellular‐colonizing endophytic bacteria in field shoots and micropropagating papaya stocks with high genotypic similarity and silent participation in various plant processes/pathways.  相似文献

Chemical investigation of the acetonic extract of the leaves and twigs of Taxus sumatrana (Taxaceae) led to the isolation of four new taxane diterpene esters, taiwantaxins A–D ( 1 – 4 , resp.). Their structures were determined primarily on the basis of 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR techniques as well as MS. Compound 1 is a rearranged taxane diterpenoid possessing an opened oxetane ring moiety containing C(4), C(5), and C(20). The metabolites 2 and 3 belong to a 5/6/6 taxene system having a rare five‐membered γ‐lactone ring comprising C(8), C(9), C(10), and C(19). Compound 4 is an example of a taxane diterpene containing a 6/8/6 ring system with a tetrahydrofuran ring comprising C(2), C(3), C(4), and C(20). The 11(15→1)abeo‐taxane diterpenoids, taiwantaxins A–C ( 1 – 3 , resp.) are lacking an O‐bearing functionality at either C(13) or C(14). Compound 2 showed significant cytotoxic activity against human PC‐3 tumor cells.  相似文献

—Slices of tissue of the electric organ of Torpedo marmorata were incubated in vitro in a salineurea-sucrose solution containing a labelled precursor of the acetyl moiety of ACh ([1-14C]glucose, [2-14C]pyruvate, or [1-14C]acetate) either alone or in the presence of another unlabelled precursor. The incorporation of 14C from [1-14C]acetate into ACh was considerably higher than from the other two substrates. The specific radioactivities (SRA) of the‘total',‘bound’and‘free’ACh were compared in experiments with [2-14C]pyruvate and [1-14C]acetate. With both precursors, the SRA of the‘bound’ACh were lower than those of‘total’ACh; consequently, the‘free’ACh pool was more labelled than the‘bound’pool. After short incubations with [2-14C]pyruvate the SRA of'bound’ACh were closer to the SRA of‘total’ACh than with [1-14C]acetate. A simple method is described for the labelling of ACh and its separation from other labelled compounds in experiments with the electric organ using [14C]acetate as the labelled precursor.  相似文献

The combinations of three genotypes of Lolium perenne with and without (i) infection by the fungal endophyte Neotyphodium lolii, (ii) infection by ryegrass mosaic virus and (iii) one of five different forms of abiotic stress were studied in pot experiments in a glasshouse. The five abiotic stress treatments were (i) low pH (compared with ‘optimal’ pH), (ii) cutting plants to a height of 1 cm (compared with 5 cm), (iii) shading (compared with no shading), (iv) cutting plants at 2‐weekly intervals (compared with 6 wk) and (v) low nitrogen applied (compared with ‘high’ nitrogen applied). On average, over the five experiments, the accumulated herbage dry weight was 10% more for N. lolii‐infected plants than uninfected, 22% more for virus‐free plants than infected, and 265% more for ‘unstressed’ plants than for plants with abiotic stress. The effects of N. lolii infection on plant growth when the plants were under abiotic or biotic stress were not consistent.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate whether chilling tolerance of C4 photosynthesis in Miscanthus can be transferred to sugarcane by hybridization. Net leaf CO2 uptake (Asat) and the maximum operating efficiency of photosystem II (ФPSII) were measured in warm conditions (25 °C/20 °C), and then during and following a chilling treatment of 10 °C/5 °C for 11 day in controlled environment chambers. Two of three hybrids (miscanes), ‘US 84‐1058’ and ‘US 87‐1019’, did not differ significantly from the chilling tolerant M. ×giganteus ‘Illinois’ (Mxg), for Asat, and ΦPSII measured during chilling. For Mxg grown at 10 °C/5 °C for 11 days, Asat was 4.4 μmol m?2 s?1, while for miscane ‘US 84‐1058’ and ‘US 87‐1019’, Asat was 5.7 and 3.5 μmol m?2 s?1, respectively. Miscanes ‘US 84‐1058’ and ‘US 87‐1019’ and Mxg had significantly higher rates of Asat during chilling than three tested sugarcanes. A third miscane showed lower rates than Mxg during chilling, but recovered to higher rates than sugarcane upon return to warm conditions. Chilling tolerance of ‘US 84‐1058’ was further confirmed under autumn field conditions in southern Illinois. The selected chilling tolerant miscanes have particular value for biomass feedstock and biofuel production and at the same time they can be a starting point for extending sugarcane's range to colder climates.  相似文献

In order to find new structural and biologically active compounds, the constituents of the bark of Cudrania tricuspidata (Carr.) Bur. were investigated and a new 6-p-hydroxybenzyltaxifolin glucoside, named tricusposide (compound 1), together with 16 known compounds, was isolated by solvent partition, macroporous adsorption resin AB-8, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 chromatography. Using spectroscopic methods, the structures of the compounds were elucidated as 6-p-hydroxybenzyl taxifolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (compound 1), dihydroquerctin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (compound 2), dihydrokaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucoside (compound 3), dihydroquercetin (compound 4), peonoside (compound 5), sphaerobioside (compound 6), quercimeritrin (compound 7), genistein (compound 8), aromadendrin (compound 9), kaempferol (compound 10), genistin (compound 11), 3,4-dihydroxystyryl alcohol (compound 12), sucrose (compound 13), 1,3,5,6-tetrahydroxyxanthone (compound 14), gericudranin E (compound 15), gericudranin C (compound 16), and orobol (compound 17). Compounds 2-6, 8, 9, 12-14, and 17 were isolated from this genus for the first time.  相似文献

This study was set up to identify the long‐term effect of biochar on soil C sequestration of recent carbon inputs. Arable fields (n = 5) were found in Belgium with charcoal‐enriched black spots (>50 m2; n = 14) dating >150 years ago from historical charcoal production mound kilns. Topsoils from these ‘black spots’ had a higher organic C concentration [3.6 ± 0.9% organic carbon (OC)] than adjacent soils outside these black spots (2.1 ± 0.2% OC). The soils had been cropped with maize for at least 12 years which provided a continuous input of C with a C isotope signature (δ13C) ?13.1, distinct from the δ13C of soil organic carbon (?27.4 ‰) and charcoal (?25.7 ‰) collected in the surrounding area. The isotope signatures in the soil revealed that maize‐derived C concentration was significantly higher in charcoal‐amended samples (‘black spots’) than in adjacent unamended ones (0.44% vs. 0.31%; = 0.02). Topsoils were subsequently collected as a gradient across two ‘black spots’ along with corresponding adjacent soils outside these black spots and soil respiration, and physical soil fractionation was conducted. Total soil respiration (130 days) was unaffected by charcoal, but the maize‐derived C respiration per unit maize‐derived OC in soil significantly decreased about half (< 0.02) with increasing charcoal‐derived C in soil. Maize‐derived C was proportionally present more in protected soil aggregates in the presence of charcoal. The lower specific mineralization and increased C sequestration of recent C with charcoal are attributed to a combination of physical protection, C saturation of microbial communities and, potentially, slightly higher annual primary production. Overall, this study provides evidence of the capacity of biochar to enhance C sequestration in soils through reduced C turnover on the long term.  相似文献

Aim: To elucidate the possible mechanism of phytoplasma elimination from periwinkle shoots caused by indole‐3‐butyric acid (IBA) treatment. Methods and Results: It has been shown that a transfer of in vitro‐grown phytoplasma‐infected Catharanthus roseus (periwinkle) plantlets from medium supplemented with 6‐benzylaminopurine (BA) to one supplemented with IBA can induce remission of symptoms and even permanent elimination of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris’ reference strain HYDB. Endogenous auxin levels and general methylation levels in noninfected periwinkles, periwinkles infected with two ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ species and phytoplasma‐recovered periwinkles were measured and compared. After the transfer from cytokinin‐ to auxin‐containing media, healthy shoots maintained their phenotype, methylation levels and hormone concentrations. Phytoplasma infection caused a change in the endogenous indole‐3‐acetic acid to IBA ratio in periwinkle shoots infected with two ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ species, but general methylation was significantly changed only in shoots infected with ‘Ca. P. asteris’, which resulted in the only phytoplasma species eliminated from shoots after transfer to IBA‐containing medium. Both phytoplasma infection and treatment with plant growth regulators influenced callose deposition in phloem tissue, concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and soluble proteins, H2O2 levels and activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Conclusion: Lower level of host genome methylation in ‘Ca. P. asteris’‐infected periwinkles on medium supplemented with BA was significantly elevated after IBA treatment, while IBA treatment had no effect on cytosine methylation in periwinkles infected with ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma ulmi’ strain EY‐C. Significance and Impact of the Study: Hormone‐dependent recovery is a distinct phenomenon from natural recovery. As opposed to spontaneously recovered plants in which elevated peroxide levels and differential expression of peroxide‐related enzymes were observed, in hormone‐dependent recovery changes in global host genome, methylation coincide with the presence/absence of phytoplasma.  相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars have been reported to range in tolerance to injury by 4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazine-5(4H)one (metribuzin), from tolerant (e.g.‘Bragg’) to susceptible (e.g.‘Coker 102’ and ‘Semmes’). ‘Bragg,’‘Coker 102’, and ‘Semmes’ soybeans were grown in sand subirrigated with nutrient solution containing labelled (14C-carbonyl metribuzin) and nonlabelled metribuzin to determine cultivar variability in absorption, translocation, and metabolism of metribuzin. Plants were periodically harvested, autoradiographed, and radioactivity in tissue extracts quantified. Data indicated that all 3 cultivars readily absorbed and translocated metribuzin. However, ‘Bragg’ tissues accumulated greater quantities of metribuzin metabolites than the other two cultivars. The major 14C-containing metabolite in ‘Semmes’ and ‘Coker’ roots and stems was 6-tert-butyl-as-triazine-3-5-(2H,4H)-dione, whereas the major 14C-metabolite isolated from‘Bragg’ roots and stems was a glucose conjugate. Results indicated that differential-intraspecific responses to metribuzin may result from differential capacities for herbicide detoxification by conjugation.  相似文献

Garden hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is a popular ornamental plant that can be devastated by leaf‐spot diseases. Information is needed to determine susceptibility of commercial cultivars to leaf‐spot diseases. To address this need, 88 cultivars of H. macrophylla were evaluated for their resistance to leaf‐spot diseases in full‐shade (2007–2008), full‐sun (2007–2008) and partial‐shade (2009–2010) environments in McMinnville, TN, USA. Ten cultivars [‘Ami Pasquier’, ‘Ayesha’, ‘Blue Bird’, ‘Forever Pink’, ‘Fuji Waterfall’ (‘Fujinotaki’), ‘Miyama‐yae‐Murasaki’, ‘Seafoam’, ‘Taube’, ‘Tricolor’ and ‘Veitchii’] were rated resistant (R) or moderately resistant to leaf spot under each of the three environments. In 2007–2008, approximately 51% of the cultivars were rated R in full shade, but only 5% were R in full sun. In 2009–2010, only 1% of the cultivars were rated R in partial shade. Although environmental parameters including temperature and rainfall influence disease severity and host reaction, a shaded environment was least favourable for leaf‐spot disease development, which demonstrates that establishing hydrangea in shaded environment can be an effective tool along with cultivar selection for managing leaf‐spot diseases on hydrangea. Six pathogens, Corynespora cassiicola, Cercospora spp., Myrothecium roridum, Glomerella cingulata (Anamorph: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides), Phoma exigua and Botrytis cinerea, were associated with leaf‐spot diseases of garden hydrangea. Of the leaf‐spot pathogens, C. cassiicola was most frequently isolated (55% of all isolates), followed by Cercospora spp. (20%) and other pathogens (25%). Because symptoms attributed to each leaf‐spot pathogen were similar, cultivars were selected for resistance to multiple leaf‐spot pathogens.  相似文献

Mainly on the basis of the distribution patterns of 42 species of the recently revised genus Cladopkora (Chlorophyceae) in the north Atlantic Ocean, it appeared possible to distinguish 10 phytogeographic distribution groups of wide applicability. Experimentally determined critical temperatures limiting essential events in the life histories of 17 benthic algal species were used to infer possible phytogeographic boundaries; these appeared to fit closely the phytogeographic boundaries derived from field-distribution data. For a temperate species, at least six different boundaries can be postulated and should be checked in the northern hemisphere: (1) the ‘northern lethal boundary’ (corresponding to the lowest winter temperature which a species can survive); (2) the ‘northern growth boundary’ (corresponding to the lowest summer temperature which, over a period of several months, permits sufficient growth); (3) the ‘northern reproductive boundary’ (corresponding to the lowest summer temperature permitting reproduction over a period of several months); (4–6) the corresponding southern boundaries. Photoperiodic responses may influence the temperature responses. Many phytogeographic boundaries appear to be of a composite nature. For instance, the southern boundary of Laminaria digitata follows the European 10°C February isotherm (which corresponds to the highest winter temperature permitting fertility in the female gametophyte, i.e. to the ‘southern reproductive boundary’), and the American 19°C summer isotherm (corresponding to the ‘southern lethal boundary’). Thus, experimental evidence supports the validity of eight of the following 10 distribution groups (for distribution groups 2 and 6, such evidence could not be found): (1) the amphiatlantic tropical-to-warm temperate group, with a north-eastern extension (examples: Gracilaria foliifera and Centroceras clavulalum); (2) the amphiatlantic tropical-to-warm temperate group, with a north-western extension (example: Hypnea musciformis); (3) the amphiatlantic tropical-to-temperate group (example: Sphacelaria rigidula =furcigera); (4) the amphiatlantic temperate group: the Cladophora rupestris type (examples: Callithamnion hookeri, Dumontia contorta; Laminaria saccharina is transitional to type 10, I., digitata to types 5 and 10); (5) the amphiatlantic temperate group: the Cl. albida type (examples: Scytosiphon lomentaria, Petalonia fascia); (6) the tropical western Atlantic group; (7) the north-east American tropical-to-temperate group (example: Gracilaria tikvahiae); (8) the north-east American temperate group and the corresponding Japanese temperate group (examples: Campylaephora hypneoides and Sargassum muticum); (9) the warm-temperate Mediterranean-Atlantic group, and the corresponding warm-temperate Californian group (examples: Saccorhiza polyschides, Laminaria hyperborea, I., ockroleuca, Macrocystis pyrifera, Hedophyllum sessile); (10) the Arctic group (examples: Saccorhiza dermatodea and Sphacelaria arctica). Distribution groups 6, 9 and 10 have comparatively narrow temperature ranges with a span of 18 22°C between their lethal boundaries and of 5 12°C between their reproductive or growth boundaries. These narrow temperature ranges limit the species in these groups to the tropics; the temperate coasts on the eastern sides of the north Pacific and north Atlantic Oceans and in the southern hemisphere; and to the Arctic, respectively. The narrow temperature ranges of group 9 make the species in this group unfit for life on the western temperate coasts of the north Pacific and north Atlantic Oceans, where algae must cope with annual temperature fluctuations of more than 20°C. Conversely, algae in group 8 (containing the numerous Japanese endemic species) are characterized by wide temperature spans (e.g. 29°C between ‘lethal boundaries’, 12–19°C between ‘growth and/or reproductive boundaries’) and must be potentially capable of occupying wide latitudinal belts on temperate coasts along the east sides of the north Pacific and north Atlantic Oceans. Algae ‘escaped’ from Japan, such as Sargassum muticum, conform to this picture. Apparently Japanese algae do not have the capacity for long distance dispersal. The corresponding east American coasts (30–45 N) harbour very few endemic species, probably as a result of the adverse nature of these sediment coasts for benthic macroalgae and their functioning as a barrier to latitudinal displacements of the flora during glaciations. The remaining distribution groups (1,2,3,4,5,7) are characterized by wide temperature spans and wide distributions, often in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and in both hemispheres. Six temperate species (in distribution groups 4, 5 and 9) with an amphiaequatorial distribution have similar winter-temperature maxima permitting reproduction and corresponding with winter isotherms of 15–17°C; their upper lethal temperatures are more dissimilar and correspond with summer isotherms of 20–30°C. Their amphiaequatorial distribution can be explained by assuming glacial temperature drops along east Pacific and east Atlantic equatorial coasts in narrow belts of intensified upwelling during the presumably intensified glacial circulation of the ocean gyres.  相似文献

Ceramides (Cer) are implicated in obesity‐associated skeletal muscle and perhaps adipocyte insulin resistance. We examined whether the sphingolipid content of human subcutaneous adipose tissue and plasma varies by obesity and sex as well as the relationship between ceramide content and metabolic indices. Abdominal subcutaneous adipose biopsies were performed on 12 lean adults (males = 6), 12 obese adults (males = 6) for measurement of sphingolipid content and activity of the main ceramide metabolism enzymes. Blood was sampled for glucose, insulin (to calculate homeostasis model assessment‐estimated insulin resistance (HOMAIR)) adiponectin, and interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) concentrations. Compared to lean controls, total ceramide content (pg/adipocyte) was increased by 31% (P < 0.05) and 34% (P < 0.05) in obese females and males, respectively. In adipocytes from obese adults sphingosine, sphinganine, sphingosine‐1‐phosphate, C14‐Cer, C16‐Cer, and C24‐Cer were all increased. C18:1‐Cer was increased in obese males and C24:1‐Cer in obese females. For women only, there was a negative correlation between C16‐Cer ceramide and plasma adiponectin (r = ?0.77, P = 0.003) and a positive correlation between total ceramide content and HOMAIR (r = 0.74, P = 0.006). For men only there were significant (at least P < 0.05), positive correlations between adipocyte Cer‐containing saturated fatty acid and plasma IL‐6 concentration. We conclude that the sexual dimorphism in adipose tissue behavior in humans extends to adipose tissue sphingolipid content its association with adiponectin, IL‐6 and insulin resistance.  相似文献
