OBJECTIVES--To seek associations between meteorological factors, concentrations of air pollutants or pollen, and an asthma epidemic which occurred in London on 24 and 25 June 1994 after a thunderstorm. DESIGN--Retrospective study of patients'' accident and emergency department records, with bivariate and multivariate analysis of environmental factors and data collection for the two months surrounding the epidemic. SETTING--The accident and emergency department of St Mary''s Hospital in west central London. SUBJECTS--148 patients presenting with asthma between 1 June and 31 July 1994, of whom 40 presented in the 24 hours after the storm. RESULTS--The asthma epidemic was significantly associated with a drop in air temperature six hours previously and a high grass pollen concentration nine hours previously. Non-epidemic asthma was significantly associated with lightning strikes, increase in humidity or sulphur dioxide concentration, a drop in temperature or high rainfall the previous day, and a decrease in maximum air pressure or changes in grass pollen counts over the previous two days. CONCLUSIONS--New episodes of asthma during the epidemic on 24 and 25 June 1994 were associated with a fall in air temperature and a rise in grass pollen concentration. Non-epidemic asthma was significantly associated with a greater number of environmental changes. This may indicate that the patients with thunderstorm associated asthma were a separate population, sensitive to different environmental stimuli.  相似文献

Approximately 1 in 1000 live births is afflicted with an axial skeletal defect. Although many of the known human teratogens can produce axial skeletal defects, the etiology of over half of the observed defects is unknown. The high morbidity associated with these defects demands that we continue to elucidate the mechanisms of axial skeletal teratogens. Advances in cell and molecular biology with respect to normal development and somitogenesis and the pathogenesis and mechanisms of teratogenesis are occurring at a tremendous rate. This allows teratologists and developmental toxicologists the opportunity to revisit old problems with new tools to elucidate common mechanisms between various environmental insults and discover novel targets that aid in the understanding of normal and pathogenic development of the spine. Question: Species composition during secondary succession is influenced by a number of factors, such as soil moisture, disturbance timing and surrounding vegetation. How does the importance of these factors change over the course of succession? Methods: We set up a full‐factorial block design using molehills differing in (a) disturbance timing, (b) soil moisture and (c) composition of surrounding vegetation, and recorded the cover of all species present on the molehills over 3 years. M1ultiple regression analyses on the dissimilarity matrices of community composition and of environmental factors were applied for each of five age classes of molehills to estimate the effect of the single factors at different stages of succession. Results: The timing of disturbance did not significantly affect community composition at any stage of succession. In contrast, the effects of soil moisture and surrounding vegetation changed significantly over time, with moisture being more important at earlier stages of succession and surrounding vegetation at later stages. Conclusion: The importance of environmental factors for species composition change significantly over the course of secondary succession. Instead of aggregating the effects of environmental factors over time, future studies should consider underlying dynamics of recolonization more comprehensively.  相似文献

In normal mice, stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1/CXCL12) promotes the migration, proliferation, and survival of peritoneal B1a (PerB1a) lymphocytes. Because these cells express a self-reactive repertoire and are expanded in New Zealand Black/New Zealand White (NZB/W) mice, we tested their response to SDF-1 in such mice. PerB1a lymphocytes from NZB/W mice were exceedingly sensitive to SDF-1. This greater sensitivity was due to the NZB genetic background, it was not observed for other B lymphocyte subpopulations, and it was modulated by IL-10. SDF-1 was produced constitutively in the peritoneal cavity and in the spleen. It was also produced by podocytes in the glomeruli of NZB/W mice with nephritis. The administration of antagonists of either SDF-1 or IL-10 early in life prevented the development of autoantibodies, nephritis, and death in NZB/W mice. Initiation of anti-SDF-1 mAb treatment later in life, in mice with established nephritis, inhibited autoantibody production, abolished proteinuria and Ig deposition, and reversed morphological changes in the kidneys. This treatment also counteracted B1a lymphocyte expansion and T lymphocyte activation. Therefore, PerB1a lymphocytes are abnormally sensitive to the combined action of SDF-1 and IL-10 in NZB/W mice, and SDF-1 is key in the development of autoimmunity in this murine model of lupus.  相似文献

Abstract

Islands crucially contribute to the Mediterranean Basin’s high floristic diversity, which, however, is at risk facing climate and land-use changes. Besides the identification of highly diverse areas, the knowledge about factors favouring diversity is of great importance. We analysed plant species diversity and composition related to environmental factors over varied vegetation units on a former Italian prison island in the northwest of Sardinia. Due to a long history of land use with grazing and later abandonment the nowadays protected island features a semi-natural landscape and can serve as an example for strongly anthropogenic altered insular ecosystems. Floristic composition, soil properties, microclimate and ungulate abundance were assessed. Relationships of vegetation composition and diversity with abiotic variables were examined by Canonical Correspondence Analysis, which indicated the importance of air temperature, soil moisture, slope gradient and C/N ratio for floristic differentiation. Most important abiotic factors for plant species richness were relative air humidity and soil moisture, while floristic diversity was mainly determined by air temperature and pH. Furthermore, observation data pointed to an adverse influence of ungulate abundance for plant species diversity. Regarding nature conservation, grazing intensity thus must be critically taken into account, especially for sensitive vegetation units like the coastal garrigue.  相似文献

Aims Spatial processes and environmental control are the two distinct, yet not mutually exclusive forces of community structuring, but the relative importance of these factors is controversial due to the species-specific dispersal ability, sensitivity towards environmental variables, organism's abundance and the effect of spatial scale. In the present paper, we explored spatial versus environmental control in shaping community composition (i.e. β-diversity) and species turnover (i.e. change of β-diversity) at an alpine meadow along a slope aspect gradient on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau at different spatial scales of sampling (quadrats and plots), by taking account of seed dispersal mode and abundance.Methods We examined the relative importance of spatial processes and environmental factors using all species and four additional subsets of selected species. Moreover, we attempted to explore the effect of scale (quadrat refers to scale of ~0.3 m and plot of ~8 m) on their counter balance. The data were analyzed both by variation partitioning and multiple regressions on distance matrices. The spatial structure was modelled using Moran's eigenvector maps (MEM).Important findings Both spatial processes and environmental factors were important determinants of the community composition and species turnover. The community composition in the alpine meadow was controlled by spatially structured environment (17.6%), space independent of environment (18.0%) and a negligible effect of environment independent of space (4.4%) at the scale of quadrats. These three components contributed 21.8, 9.9 and 13.9%, respectively, at the scale of plots. The balance between the forces at different spatial scales drove community structures along the slope aspect gradient. The importance of environmental factors on β-diversity at alpine meadow increased with scale while that of spatial processes decreased or kept steady, depending on dispersal mode and abundance of species comprising the subset. But the 'pure' effect of spatial processes on species turnover increased with scale while that of environmental factors decreased. This discrepancy highlights that β-diversity and species turnover were determined jointly by spatial processes and environmental factors. We also found that the relative roles of these processes vary with spatial scale. These results underline the importance of considering species-specific dispersal ability and abundance of species comprising the communities and the appropriate spatial scale in understanding the mechanisms of community assembly.  相似文献

Pattern in ecological communities - the distribution, abundance and diversity of species - depends on a complex interplay between large - and local-scale processes. Large-scale variation in factors such as environmental stress, dispersal or productivity sets the stage for local-scale ecological processes such as predation or competition. Until recently, most research focused on local-scale explanations of community pattern. Current models attempt to integrate the role of individual large-scale factors with local-scale processes. This trend will continue, with increased effort to understand the specific means by which large-scale factors cause variation among communities.  相似文献

A murine IgG2a, kappa-monoclonal autoantibody (mAb) F78 is described that recognizes a novel epitope associated with small nuclear ribonucleoprotein complexes (snRNP). F78 selectively immunoprecipitated a unique pattern of small nuclear RNA (U1, U2, and U4 to U6) characterized by a marked depletion of U1 and an elevated proportion of U2 compared with known patterns immunoprecipitated by previously described anti-RNP (2.73) and anti-Sm (7.13, Y12) mAb. Analysis of immunoprecipitated RNA from extracts previously cleared with mAb F78 and probed with anti-RNP mAb 2.73 further indicated the presence of two distinct subsets of U1. Immunoblots of whole cell extracts separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) without heating showed that F78 selectively bound to a trypsin-sensitive component of apparent m.w. greater than 120,000 which was decreased in size following RNase A treatment. The anti-Sm mAb, but not the anti-RNP mAb, also recognized this component in unheated samples. Heating before SDS-PAGE resulted in abrogation of binding to the F78 epitope. Immunoprecipitation of unlabeled or [35S]methionine-labeled cell extracts with F78 revealed the presence of most snRNP peptides, but the absence of peptide C and the 68,000 m.w. component, known to be selectively associated with U1-specific snRNP. Two-dimensional SDS-PAGE analysis of F78 immunoprecipitates confirmed that the epitope recognized by this mAb resides on a heat-dissociable complex containing snRNP-related peptides B, B', D, E, F, and G, but lacking U1-associated peptides. F78 mAb therefore defines a subset of snRNP which lack anti-RNP associated U1 RNA as well as peptides known to be selectively associated with this RNA species. It apparently recognizes an epitope associated with an assembled form of these particles and may be useful in examining structures involved in RNA processing.  相似文献

The granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) autoantibody (GMAb) is the causative agent underlying autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (aPAP). It consists primarily of the IgG isotype. At present, information on other isotypes of the autoantibody is limited. We detected serum the IgM isotype of GMAb (IgM-GMAb) in more than 80% of patients with aPAP and 22% of healthy subjects, suggesting that a continuous antigen pressure may be present in most patients. Levels of the IgM isotype were weakly correlated with IgG-GMAb levels but not IgA-GMAb, suggesting that its production may be associated with that of IgG-GMAb. The mean binding avidity to GM-CSF of the IgM isotype was 100-fold lower than the IgG-GMAb isotype, whereas the IC(50) value for neutralizing capacity was 20,000-fold higher than that of IgG-GMAb, indicating that IgM-GMAb is only a very weak neutralizer of GM-CSF. In bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from nine patients, IgG-GMAb was consistently detected, but IgM-GMAb was under the detection limit in most patients, confirming that IgM-GMAb is functionally a bystander in the pathogenesis of aPAP. It rather may be involved in the mechanism for development of IgG-GMAb in vivo.  相似文献

Phytoliths have proved to be reliable indicators of environmental conditions both at present and in the past, and can provide evidence for the distribution of taxa or vegetation. Understanding the environmental significance of phytoliths within plants helps in drawing more reliable inferences about palaeovegetation and in reconstructing the palaeo-environment. The present study examined the relationship between phytoliths and environmental factors to assess the environmental significance of different types of phytoliths. Phytoliths were extracted from Phragmites communis growing in xerophytic and aquatic habitats at twelve sampling sites in north-eastern China and their implications for the environment were assessed using quantitative data mainly including phytolith concentration and environmental factors and statistical analyses. Principal component analysis (PCA) of several environmental factors (including the climate, micro terrain, and the physicochemical properties of soils) revealed that other factors being constant, P. communis phytolith concentrations were influenced largely by the average annual temperature and precipitation. Orthogonal experiment analysis and three-way analyses of variance of the concentrations confirmed the reliability of the results of the PCA. More specifically, the concentrations of the saddle and rondel types of phytoliths (the short-cell phytoliths) were closely linked to the average annual temperature whereas those of the elongate, lanceolate, and bulliform phytoliths (the non-short-cell phytoliths) were more sensitive to the variations in water status. The results contribute to further confirming the major environmental implications of phytoliths and, in turn, providing a reference for growth and development of wetland plants. Our findings also provide critical information that could help managers and policymakers assess and modify ecological restoration practices.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the amount of pollen produced by anemophilous woody taxa with allergenic properties and with considerable contribution in the concentration of pollen in the air of a Mediterranean city (Thessaloniki, Greece). The taxa selected are Corylus avellana, Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis and var. pyramidalis, Olea europaea and Platanus orientalis; each was studied in more than one sampling stations differing in elevation, direction or both. O. europaea produced the highest number of pollen grains per flower (1.3 × 105 ± 0.1 × 105) and P. orientalis the highest per inflorescence (3.3 × 106 ± 0.2 × 106). At the level of crown, pollen grains produced were of the order of 109 per surface/volume unit for O. europaea and the two C. sempervirens varieties; for the other two taxa, they were of the order of 106. Pollen production was lower at higher elevation and northern direction and depended on the size of the floral unit sampled (flower for O. europaea, inflorescence for all other species): the bigger the floral unit, the more pollen it contained. Our results and reports from other areas, where C. sempervirens and O. europaea grow, show that these two Mediterranean species produce comparable amounts of pollen at the levels of inflorescence or flower, respectively, wherever they occur.  相似文献

The macroecological relationships among marine phytoplankton total cell density, community size structure and temperature have lacked a theoretical explanation. The tiniest members of this planktonic group comprise cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae smaller than 2 μm in diameter, collectively known as picophytoplankton. We combine here two ecological rules, the temperature–size relationship with the allometric size‐scaling of population abundance to explain a remarkably consistent pattern of increasing picophytoplankton biomass with temperature over the ?0.6 to 22 °C range in a merged dataset obtained in the eastern and western temperate North Atlantic Ocean across a diverse range of environmental conditions. Our results show that temperature alone was able to explain 73% of the variance in the relative contribution of small cells to total phytoplankton biomass regardless of differences in trophic status or inorganic nutrient loading. Our analysis predicts a gradual shift toward smaller primary producers in a warmer ocean. Because the fate of photosynthesized organic carbon largely depends on phytoplankton size, we anticipate future alterations in the functioning of oceanic ecosystems.  相似文献

Lemna minor is a species easy to collect and culture in laboratory, and can give rapid test results. However, in order to standardise toxicity tests using Lemna minor as test organism, it is important to find out what natural variability different populations might have. Five Lemna populations were used for comparison. It contained two standard cultures and three populations collected in natural habitats. Potassium dichromate was applied as test material. Lemna populations cultured under the same conditions showed different T(D) and LC50 values. There is an inverse relation between the sensitivity and T(D) of the strains. It is supposed that growth rate and sensitivity of Lemna populations depend on environmental factors characterising the habitat in which the given popluation originally lives.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Cohort production of the crayfish. Orconectes virilis , ranged from 148.8 to 70.2 kg in North Twin Lake (surface area 1.9 ha) and from 151.9 to 84.9 kg in West Lost Lake (surface area 1.4 ha). Both cohort production (P) and cohort mean biomass (B) showed a long-term decrease with time. The cohort P/B ratios did not show such a trend but remained steady. The P/B ratio approximated the life cycle instantaneous rate of growth (G) which could then be used for estimating cohort production from mean biomass.
Production remained consistently higher in West Lost Lake. Analysis of horizontal life table data revealed no inherent difference between survival and fecundity rates of the crayfish population in each lake. Slight differences in basin morphometry between the two lakes determined nursery habitat availability and this affected recruitment of young from each female brood stock. Small differences in carrying capacity between two similar sized nearby lakes, along with a decrease in carrying capacity over time, were sufficient to nullify attempts to manage these populations using a maximum sustainable yield model.  相似文献
