Eight phytoseiid species were tested to evaluate and compare their potential as predators ofTetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard andT. urticae (Koch). The study was conducted using arenas of excised nightshade (Solanum douglasii Dunal) and Lima bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves infested with eitherTetranychus species. When the prey wasT. evansi, the predatorsAmblyseius californicus (McGregor) andPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot from Ventura, California, showed the highest oviposition rates. However, those rates were 4 to 6 times lower than rates for the same predators feeding onT. urticae. OnlyA. californicus and the strain ofP. persimilis from Beni-Mellal, Morocco, had survivorship higher than 50% 8 days after the beginning of the experiment. The results indicated thatT. evansi is an unfavorable prey for all the phytoseiids tested.

In choice test experiments on strawberry leaf disc arenas the phytoseiid mites Neoseiulus californicus and N. cucumeris were more effective than Typhlodromus pyri as predators of the phytophagous mites Tetranychus urticae and Phytonemus pallidus. There were no preferences shown for either prey by any of these predators. In multiple predator leaf disc experiments both Phytoseiulus persimilis and N. cucumeris significantly reduced numbers of T. urticae eggs and active stages; this effect was seen when the two species were present alone or in combination with other predator species. Neoseiulus californicus was less effective at reducing T. urticae numbers, and T. pyri was not effective; no interaction between predator species was detected in these experiments. When T. urticae alone was present as prey on potted plants, P. persimilis and N. californicus were the only phytoseiids to significantly reduce T. urticae numbers. These two predator species provided effective control of T. urticae when P. pallidus was also present; however, none of the predators reduced numbers of P. pallidus. There were no significant negative interactions when different species of predators were present together on these potted plants. In field experiments, releases of both P. persimilis and N. cucumeris significantly reduced T. urticae numbers. However, there was a significant interaction between these predator species, leading to poorer control of T. urticae when both species were released together. These results show the importance of conducting predator/prey feeding tests at different spatial scales.  相似文献

After biological control of Tetranychus urticae using Phytoseiulus persimilis, a latent mite pest, Eotetranychus asiaticus, was found on strawberries growing in a plastic greenhouse in western Japan. To determine whether the release ofP. persimilis, an exotic natural enemy of T.urticae, enhanced the occurrence of the latent pest, the efficiency of P. persimilis in controlling E.asiaticus was compared with the efficiency of two indigenous phytoseiid mites, Amblyseius californicus and A. womersleyi, under laboratory conditions. Phytoseiuluspersimilis and A. californicus attacked not onlyT. urticae but also E. asiaticus. However, the predators produced very few eggs and their offspring rarely reached adulthood when fed on E. asiaticus, so their potential as control agents for the latent mite appears to be low. In contrast, A.womersleyi feeding on E. asiaticus reproduced as well as when fed on T. urticae, and exterminated both species of spider mite. This suggests that A. womersleyihas greater potential as a biological control agent in crops where both species may occur. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The management of Tetranychus urticae, a key pest of clementine trees, is mainly based on the use of acaricides. However, more environmentally safe measures, such as biological control, are being encouraged. Life-history traits of the three most abundant phytoseiid mites associated with T. urticae on this crop (Euseius stipulatus, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus) were studied. The experiments were performed under laboratory conditions (25°C, 80 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h (L:D)) on clementine leaves and T. urticae as prey. Euseius stipulatus could not complete its life cycle, whereas P. persimilis and N. californicus completed it satisfactorily. The estimated intrinsic rate of increase (r m) was significantly higher for P. persimilis (0.344 day−1) than for N. californicus (0.244 day−1) and both were higher than the r m value of T. urticae on clementine leaves. Implications of these results for the biological control of T. urticae in this crop are discussed.  相似文献

The exotic predaceous mite,Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and the 2 native onesPhytoseius finitimus Ribaga andAmblyseius gossipi Elbadry were released on greenhouse cucumber plants in Egypt to examine their efficiency to control the twospotted spider miteTetranychus urticae Koch.P. persimilis proved to be sufficiently effective for the twospotted spider mite control under greenhouse conditions in Egypt. The 2 before-mentioned native predators were lost soon after release in the greenhouse although they are key mite predators on outdoor crops in this area.   相似文献

The commercially available strains of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, the biological control agent of Tetranychus urticae Koch, perform poorly in the Western Mediterranean, probably because they are not well adapted to local climatic conditions. For that reason, efforts are being focused on the development of a biological control programme using native phytoseiid mites. Four species of red spider mites can be found in vegetable crops in eastern Spain: T. urticae, Tetranychus turkestani Ugarov and Nikolski, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher and the recently introduced Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard. To evaluate their potential role as biological control agents, the present study evaluates the life-history of local populations of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and P. persimilis when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, T. evansi, and T. ludeni in the laboratory. Results indicate that N. californicus and P. persimilis are able to feed and complete their development on the four tested red spider mite species. The predators may exhibit a particularly high capacity for population increase when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, and T. ludeni, thus may be able to provide effective control of these species in the field. When fed T. evansi, however, predator performance was poor; significant increase in development and preoviposition times, and a reduction in oviposition period and fecundity were recorded. The resultant low capacity for population growth suggests poor ability of the two tested predators to suppress T. evansi populations on commercial crops. It is unlikely therefore that P. persimilis and N. californicus, now being widely used to control T. urticae in greenhouse crops in Central Europe, will be able to halt any spread of T. evansi to greenhouse crops in temperate areas.  相似文献

Interactions such as competition, intraguild predation (IGP), and cannibalism affect the development and coexistence of predator populations and can have significance for biological control of commonly exploited pest organisms. We studied the consequences of combined versus single release of two predaceous mite species (Phytoseiidae), with differing degrees of diet specialization, on their population dynamics and the suppression of the carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval (Tetranychidae), on greenhouse-grown gerbera. Population growth of the specialist predator Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was greater and population decline steeper when released in combination with the generalist Neoseiulus californicus McGregor than when released alone. In contrast, the N. californicus population grew and declined more gradually when released in combination with P. persimilis, compared to the single species release. The differential impact on each other's population dynamics can be primarily attributed to contrasting properties in competition, IGP, and cannibalism. At the same overall predator density and as long as prey was abundant, the specialist P. persimilis was more strongly affected by intraspecific competition than by interspecific competition with the generalist N. californicus. In contrast, interspecific competition with P. persimilis had a greater impact on N. californicus than intraspecific competition. After prey depletion, the generalist predator N. californicus was more likely to engage in IGP than was the specialist predator P. persimilis. Overall, the study demonstrates that prey specificity has significance for the quality and intensity of predator–predator interactions and indicates potential implications for biological control of spider mites. All predator releases (i.e., either species alone and both species in combination) resulted in reduction of the spider mite population to zero density. Individual release of the specialist P. persimilis led to the most rapid spider mite suppression. Nonetheless, in perennial greenhouse-grown crops P. persimilis and N. californicus could have complementary effects and a combination of the two predators could enhance long-term biological control of spider mites. The potential risks and benefits associated with the release of both species are discussed.  相似文献

The responses of 3 phytoseiid mite speciesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot,Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga andAmblyseius gossipi Elbadry to allelochemics emitted by prey mite speciesTetranychus urticae Koch,Brevipalpus pulcher (Canestrini & Fanzago) andEriophyes dioscoridis Soliman & Abou-Awad were studied using a test of two-choice assays. The repellent effect elicited by the tenuipalpid mite,B. pulcher and the eriophyid mite,E. dioscoridis againstP. persimilis could be an evidence for the existence of allomones produced by these 2 prey species. The negative response ofP. persimilis to the different stadia ofB. pulcher and the attraction ofP. finitimus toward the same prey suggest that the volatile semiochemicals produced by this prey act as kairomones forP. finitimus and as allomones forP. persimilis. The strong attraction ofP. finitimus andA. gossipi to the different stadia ofT. urticae and the considerable attraction of either predator toB. pulcher compared to the neutral response toE. dioscoridis reveal that both predators show a hierarchy of preference for the kairomones of the 3 prey species studied.   相似文献

The success of combined release of the predatory mitesPhytoseiulus persimilis and Neoseiulus californicus insuppression of spider mites may be related to the effects of the interactionsbetween the two predators on their population dynamics. We studied populationgrowth and persistence of the specialist P. persimilis andthe generalist N. californicus reared singly versus rearedin combination after simultaneous and successive predator introductions ondetached bean leaf arenas with abundant prey, Tetranychusurticae, and with diminishing prey. When reared singly with abundantprey, either predator population persisted at high densities to the end of theexperiment. In every predator combination system with abundant prey and variousinitial predator:predator ratios N. californicus displacedP. persimilis. When held singly with diminishing prey, thepopulation of P. persimilis grew initially faster than thepopulation of N. californicus but both species reachedsimilar population peaks. Irrespective whether reared singly or in combination,N. californicus persisted three to five times longer afterprey depletion than did P. persimilis. Regarding thecrucial interactions in the predator combination systems, we conclude thatintraguild predation was a stronger force than food competition and finallyresulted in the displacement of P. persimilis. Previousstudies showed that intraguild predation between the specialist P.persimilis and the generalist N. californicusisstrongly asymmetric favoring the generalist. We discuss the implications ofpotential interactions between P. persimilis andN. californicus to biological control of spider mites.  相似文献

The within tree distribution of some common natural enemies of bark beetles in pine plantations in Israel and some aspects of their feeding habits were studied with special emphasis on the potential impact on the predatorAulonium ruficorne Olivier. A total of 12 predators and 2 parasite species were found associated withA. ruficorne in the natural enemy complex of bark beetles on pines. No secondary parasites were detected. The anthocoridScoloposcelis pulchella (Zetterstedt) and the dipteranMedetera striata Parent were observed feeding on immature stages ofA. ruficorne in the absence of scolytids. The associated Coleoptea:Nemosema elongatum F.,Rhizophagus bipustulatus L.,Corticeus spp.,Plastysoma spp. andPlegaderus discisus Erickson are thought to compete withA. ruficorne on larvae and pupae of bark beetles when the latter are in limited quantities (especially in the lower section of the tree). The parasites, mainlyMetacolus unifasciatuss Forster andDendrosoter caenopachoides Ruschka are assumed to compete withA. ruficorne during the larval period in the smooth bark section of the stem. Competition might occur mainly during spring and fall. Deutonymphs of the miteIpiduropoda sellnicki were detected on the abdomen ofA. ruficorne adults. Larvae of the predator were rarely infected in the field by the bacteriaSerratia sp. while laboratory cultures suffered high rate of mortality caused by this pathogen.   相似文献

Short-term effects on consumption and oviposition rates of four strainsof Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) after a diet shiftwere evaluated. The new feeding conditions experienced by the predators weresixfixed densities of eggs or protonymphs of Tetranychusurticae Koch placed on excised strawberry leaflet discs andmaintained under laboratory conditions (25±1°C,75–85% RH, 16L: 8D). The observations were made on the first and thefifthday of the experiment. The phytoseiids came from three long-term mass-rearedstrains fed on T. urticae, Dermatophagoides farinaeHughes,or Quercus spp. pollen, respectively. The fourth strainwascollected directly in a strawberry field. Time since diet transfer can be addedto the factors (i.e. feeding history and prey density) already known to affectthe functional and numerical responses of N. californicus, both when it feeds on prey eggs and protonymphs. If consumption rates wereaveraged over all strains and densities, 9.04 and 11.41 eggs, and 6.97 and 6.48protonymphs were consumed on the first and the fifth day, respectively. If thesame was done for oviposition rates, predators feeding on eggs produced 1.46and2.36 eggs/female/day, whereas predators feeding on protonymphs produced 1.35and2.29 eggs/female/day. Time had the greatest impact on the functional responseofthe strain that had previously fed on tetranychids, while an effect of time onthe numerical response was detectable in all strains.  相似文献

The leaf-mining fliesHydrellia sp. andH. pakistanae Deonier were observed attacking the aquatic weedHydrilla verticillata (L.f.) L.C. (Hydrocharitaceae) in south India. Their life histories were very similar. The duration of the immature stages ofH. pakistanae was 25 to 29 days. The number of leaves ofH. verticillata mined by a single larva varied from 8 to 12. In the laboratory, adults feeding on 50% aqueous solution of honey lived for 6 to 21 days and laid an average of 26 eggs. Several overlapping generations occurred in the field except during the period of drought. BothHydrellia sp. andH. pakistanae were heavily parasitized by the braconidsAdemon sp. nr.decrescens Nees andChaenusa sp.   相似文献

Observations were made on the feeding behavior of the two main phytoseiid species in Spanish Citrus orchards,Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-henriot. The experiences were carried out by rearing the predatory mites on excised orange leaves, and always with an excess of the prey the Citrus Red Mite (=CRM)Panonychus citri (McGregor). In experiments with all stages of CRM, the number of prey killed per hour was 5.12 and 2.00, the percentage of successful attacks, 58% and 21%, and the mean time spent feeding on each prey was 5.1 and 12.2 minutes for starving females ofE. stipulatus andT. phialatus respectively.E. stipulatus feeds on all stages of the prey except eggs, andT. philatus, on all stages, except males. Both species attack much less successfully females ofP. citri rather than immatures. In experiments with adult females and eggs ofP. citri as prey, the mean number of prey killed daily was 4.51 females forE. stipulatus, and 2.01 females and 2.12 eggs forT. philatus. Considering this killing rate and the number of eggs laid by the predators in the same period, it can be concluded thatE. stipulatus consumes only 30% of the content of the preys killed, whereasT. philatus consumes a percentage of prey variable between individuals and ranging from 40% to 100%. These differences in feeding behavior between the two species could partly explain differences in their efficiency as biocontrol agents ofP. citri observed in the field.   相似文献

The adaptive canalization hypothesis predicts that highly fitness‐relevant traits are canalized via past selection, resulting in low phenotypic plasticity and high robustness to environmental stress. Accordingly, we hypothesized that the level of phenotypic plasticity of male body size of the predatory mites Phytoseiulus persimilis (low plasticity) and Neoseiulus californicus (high plasticity) reflects the effects of body size variation on fitness, especially male lifetime reproductive success (LRS). We first generated small and standard‐sized males of P. persimilis and N. californicus by rearing them to adulthood under limited and ample prey supply, respectively. Then, adult small and standard‐sized males were provided with surplus virgin females throughout life to assess their mating and reproductive traits. Small male body size did not affect male longevity or the number of fertilized females but reduced male LRS of P. persimilis but not N. californicus. Proximately, the lower LRS of small than standard‐sized P. persimilis males correlated with shorter mating durations, probably decreasing the amount of transferred sperm. Ultimately, we suggest that male body size is more strongly canalized in P. persimilis than N. californicus because deviation from standard body size has larger detrimental fitness effects in P. persimilis than N. californicus. © 2014 The Authors. Significant relationships between the emergence of adult predatory species,Ophyra aenescens (Wiedemann) andMuscina stabulans (Fallen) and prey,Musca domestica L.,Fannia femoralis (Stein) andF. canicularis (L.) existed on 10 poultry ranches in southern California. Predatory species may function in natural control at intervals throughout the year, especially on predominant prey,F. femoralis andF. canicularis. Dipterous species, especiallyO. aenescens andF. femoralis, were only moderately influenced by the surface area of breeding habitat available. Accuracy in the measurement of population trends in Diptere may be enhanced by increasing the number of samples at any given ranch rather than the addition of study ranches. Parasitism, ranging from 22.6–37.8% of collected puparia, involved principally 3 species,Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner,M. raptor Girault & Sanders andSpalangia cameroni Perkins.   相似文献

A total of 1,302 parasitoids representing 8 species and 4 families were recovered from 9,818 fruit fly host fruits sampled. The most common parasitoid species wasDiachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead). Average percent parasitism ranged between 0.44 and 29.23%. Parasitoid emergence data indicate thatAnastrepha ludens (Loew),A. obliqua (Sein),A. serpentina (Wiedeman),A. striata (Schiner) andToxotrypana curvicauda (Gerstaecker) were subject to parasitism. Brevipalpus californicus (Banks) was infected with ‘Candidatus Cardinium’ bacteria (Cardinium). Tetracycline-treated females produced many male progeny even though untreated females produced only female progeny. B. californicus appears to be feminized by Cardinium. The values for net reproduction rate (R0), generation time (T) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) calculated for B. californicus were 7.48/day, 31.45 days and 0.064/day, respectively. The comparison of infected females with uninfected males and other closely related species, indicated that Cardinium does not have a negative effect on the fitness of B. californicus.  相似文献

Weight gain of adult femalesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot was determined after they were fed eggs or adult females ofTetranychus urticae Koch reared on either Lima bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) or nightshade (Solanum douglasii Dunal). No significant difference was found when the predator was fed eggs ofT. urticae reared on either host. Predators were heavier when fed adult femaleT. urticae reared on bean. Apparently, a factor determining the prey's suitability is incorporated into its hemolymph or tissues and is not restricted to its gut content.   相似文献

Predation by the phytoseiid mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, is considered a major threat to the effectiveness of biological control of gorse, Ulex europaeus, using Tetranychus lintearius. To assess this threat and to determine if the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations, its development and predator : prey generation time ratios were assessed. The pre-adult mortality and development time of two populations of P. persimilis fed on two diets, T. urticae and T. lintearius, were determined at two temperatures, 14 and 24°C. There were no significant differences in either mortality or development time between the two populations of P. persimilis at these temperatures. There is therefore no evidence that the two tested populations of P. persimilis are behaving as different strains. Similarly, diet had no significant effect on either mortality or development time at these temperatures. At 14°C the mortality of P. persimilis was significantly higher and development was significantly longer than at 24°C. Using pre-adult development as a surrogate for generation times, predator : prey generation time ratios were calculated between P. persimilis and both T. urticae and T. lintearius using data from this and other studies. The predator : prey generation time ratios between P. persimilis and T. lintearius were lower than those between P. persimilis and T. urticae. These results indicate that the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is likely to be comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations. This provides further evidence that predation by P. persimilis is having a deleterious effect on T. lintearius populations and therefore reducing its effectiveness as a biological control agent for gorse.  相似文献

The behavior of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch and the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis A.-H. was investigated in laboratory experiments with transgenic Bt-eggplants, Solanum melongena L., producing the Cry3Bb toxin and corresponding isogenic, non-transformed eggplants. In bitrophic experiments, dual-choice disc tests were conducted to reveal the effects of transgenic eggplants on host plant preference of T. urticae. Adult spider mite females were individually placed on leaf discs (2 cm diameter) and were observed during five days. Females occurred significantly more frequently on transgenic halves on which also significantly more T. urticae eggs were found. The effects of a Cry3Bb-eggplant fed prey on the feeding preference of P. persimilis were investigated in tritrophic experiments. Sixteen spider mite females, eight of which had been taken from transgenic and eight from isogenic eggplants, were offered to well-fed females of P. persimilis and numbers of respective spider mites consumed were registered 12 h later when the predators were offered new spider mites again. This procedure was repeated six times. The results revealed that predatory mites consumed significantly less Bt-fed spider mites than prey that had been raised on control eggplants. These results indicate that eggplants expressing the Cry3Bb toxin for resistance against the Colorado potato beetle are more preferred by spider mites but are less preferred by their predator P. persimilis. Possible consequences of these findings for biological control of spider mites on eggplants are discussed.  相似文献
