Aim To provide the first comparative overview on the current numbers of alien species that invade representative European terrestrial and freshwater habitats for a range of taxonomic groups. Location Europe. Methods Numbers of naturalized alien species of plants, insects, herptiles, birds and mammals occurring in 10 habitats defined according to the European Nature Information System (EUNIS) were obtained from 115 regional data sets. Only species introduced after ad 1500 were considered. Data were analysed by ANCOVA and regression trees to assess whether differences exist among taxonomic groups in terms of their habitat affinity, and whether the pattern of occurrence of alien species in European habitats interacts with macroecological factors such as insularity, latitude or area. Results The highest numbers of alien plant and insect species were found in human‐made, urban or cultivated habitats; if controlled for habitat area in the region, wetland and riparian habitats appeared to support relatively high numbers of alien plant species too. Invasions by vertebrates were more evenly distributed among habitats, with aquatic and riparian, woodland and cultivated land most invaded. Mires, bogs and fens, grassland, heathland and scrub were generally less invaded. Habitat and taxonomic group explained most variation in the proportions of alien species occurring in individual habitats related to the total number of alien species in a region, and the basic pattern determined by these factors was fine‐tuned by geographical variables, namely by the mainland–island contrast and latitude, and differed among taxonomic groups. Main conclusions There are two ecologically distinct groups of alien species (plants and insects versus vertebrates) with strikingly different habitat affinities. Invasions by these two contrasting groups are complementary in terms of habitat use, which makes an overall assessment of habitat invasions in Europe possible. Since numbers of naturalized species in habitats are correlated among taxa within these two groups, the data collected for one group of vertebrates, for example, could be used to estimate the habitat‐specific numbers of alien species for other vertebrate groups with reasonable precision, and the same holds true for insects and plants.  相似文献

The putative peculiarities of island insects and the factors important in their conservation are noted. Endemism and speciation lessons from island insects have contributed significantly to wider understanding of aspects of insect diversification. The twin complexes of threats to island insects involve (1) internal processes, essentially habitat changes by human activity, and their consequences and (2) externally-imposed effects from alien invasive species, both of these operating in environments that may lack much of the buffer capability present in larger continental areas or in richer communities. Many island insects now persist only in small inaccessible remnant habitats, and protecting these is a key theme in planning insect conservation on islands. The possible effects of climate change may be severe, particularly on ‘low islands’ such as many coral cays.  相似文献

Atlas maps of butterflies invariably fail to distinguish the status of records, that is, whether they are observations of breeding populations or vagrant individuals. Yet, for conservation purposes, it is clearly important to know whether records relate to breeding populations in suitable habitats or not. The high mobility of butterfly adults carries two expectations. First, vagrants will frequently be recorded within grid squares, particularly when mapping is fine grained. Second, the frequency of vagrants is likely to be higher in mapping units comprising biotopes with few butterfly habitats, than in those rich in butterfly habitats, if only because there is a greater regional pool of potential vagrants for biotopes depleted in butterfly habitats. It follows that with repeated sampling of squares or biotopes differences in species breeding status will be cumulative between those rich and poor in butterfly habitats. In this paper, these predictions have been tested using data from 30, 1 ha grid squares on Alderley Edge Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) (UK), half of which are in woodland (few butterfly habitats) and half with open habitats (non-woodland; rich in butterfly habitats). Butterflies have been recorded during 38 visits over 4 years. Within squares, vagrants have been distinguished from breeding species on the basis of the presence of larval hostplants and other suitable resources for seasonal maintenance. Owing to the occurrence of vagrants, number of breeding species was found to be significantly fewer than total species in mapping units. Vagrants were found to be significantly more abundant in woodland squares, which contain few species larval hostplants, than in squares dominated by open biotopes with many species larval hostplants. Repeated sampling resulted in a cumulative increase in the frequency of vagrant species. Furthermore, the relative frequency of vagrants increased at a greater rate in woodland squares compared to non-woodland squares. Suggestions are made as to how recording for atlases may be improved.  相似文献

Abstract. Pollen data from three mor humus profiles taken from within native woodland in the Killarney National Park are presented. The pollen records illustrate the woodland history over about 250 years. The dynamics of woodland on the mainland are compared with those of a small ungrazed lake island. Human disturbance of the woodland in the form of felling and burning is recorded at both locations. Following the disturbance, open vegetation predominated in which Arbutus unedo was widespread. This species declined as canopy woodland re-developed. The pollen records illustrate the dynamics of the developing woodland during which the role of Ilex aquifolium and Taxus baccata was strongly influenced by grazing. The past importance of Taxus baccata in western Irish woodland is considered.  相似文献

Bats were surveyed and insects were trapped in several different habitats to test the hypothesis that insect abundance and types are the most important factors affecting the regional distribution of bats. A bat community of ten species dominated by Eptesicus nilssoni and Pipistrellus pipistrellus was analysed. The results show that the general pattern of bat distribution in different habitats, and the seasonal changes in habitat utilization, could be explained in terms of the abundance of swarming insects, mainly chironomids. Deciduous woodland near water provided essential habitat in early summer for each bat species. Later on, in July, all species spread out to many different habitats. In autumn street-lamps were an important factor affecting bat distribution.  相似文献

A list of the commoner garden and town birds of the tropical city of Singapore is given. None of them are birds of the rain forest which formerly covered the island. The majority are coastal species the natural habitats of which were mangrove and the thin fringe of savanna along parts of the east coast of the Malayan Peninsula. The reasons for this are discussed.
The number of garden species is comparatively small and many niches appear to be vacant. These are expected to be filled mainly by open country species moving down the peninsula from Burma and Thailand along the corridors being opened up by deforestation. This process has already begun, though few species have yet reached as far south as Singapore.
The garden avifauna is unstable and numerous changes in status have occurred in the last few decades; many more are predicted.  相似文献

1. The spillover of exotic predators from managed ecosystems into natural habitats may exacerbate the biodiversity losses caused by land‐use intensification. 2. In the present study, the impacts of the exotic wandering spider Cheiracanthium mildei L. Koch in an oak woodland ecosystem adjacent to an intensively‐managed agricultural system were examined. 3. Abundance and species richness of resident spiders and insects in oak branches were reduced in the presence of C. mildei. Contrary to expectations, C. mildei did not disproportionately affect other wandering spider species, but appeared to impact spiders from all tested functional groups. Numbers of herbivorous and predatory insects were also lower in the presence of C. mildei. 4. Although the apparent effects of this spider extend to multiple trophic levels in oak woodland, its voracity and relatively large size may ultimately strengthen herbivore suppression in the vineyard–oak woodland landscape.  相似文献

Summary

The mixed oak woodland on the island of Clairinsh has been left unmanaged as part of the Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve. Until 1913 the woodlands had been treated as coppice-with-standards. Between 1961 and 1986 changes in the structure and composition of the stand were recorded by means of two transects, within which individual trees and shrubs were charted and measured. Most of the stand remained closed, increasing in basal area, but decreasing in density. However, a limited number of canopy gaps formed, part-icularly as a result of the 1968 hurricane. Of the individuals present in 1961, 30% died by 1986, mortality being particularly high in smaller individuals and in birch. Recruitment was mainly confined to rowan, holly and hazel in the closed woodland, and to birch and rowan in the gaps. The changes are discussed in relation to natural processes and the history of management.  相似文献

Plant-feeding insects have undergone unparalleled diversification among different plant taxa, yet explanations for variation in their diversity lack a quantitative, predictive framework. Island biogeographic theory has been applied to spatially discrete habitats but not to habitats, such as host plants, separated by genetic distance. We show that relationships between the diversity of gall-inducing flies and their host plants meet several fundamental predictions from island biogeographic theory. First, plant-taxon genetic distinctiveness, an integrator for long-term evolutionary history of plant lineages, is a significant predictor of variance in the diversity of gall-inducing flies among host-plant taxa. Second, range size and structural complexity also explain significant proportions of the variance in diversity of gall-inducing flies among different host-plant taxa. Third, as with other island systems, plant-lineage age does not predict species diversity. Island biogeographic theory, applied to habitats defined by genetic distance, provides a novel, comprehensive framework for analysing and explaining the diversity of plant-feeding insects and other host-specific taxa.  相似文献

The bird species distribution along a dry forest-oak woodland vegetation gradient was studied in autumn and spring in two consecutive years. Intra-seasonal comparisons showed that bird species had similar distributions in each of the two years. Inter-seasonal changes were mainly due to compositional differences even though resident species generally used similar habitats in both seasons. Ordination analyses, based on the first year bird species abundances, showed a clearly segregated distribution between forest and woodland birds. Within these two vegetation types, the distribution tended to be more individualistic. Nevertheless further habitats could be identified according to groups of birds having similar distributions. These habitats did not correspond to the plant associations which resulted from a previous classification of the vegetation. Observations of the plant use by the birds during the study period showed that, in most cases, the plant variables associated with ordination analyses are unlikely to be very important for the bird species life cycles.  相似文献

Over the last 60 years Britain's broadleaved woodlands have undergone a complex pattern of ecological change. The total extent has expanded from c . 676 000 ha in 1947 to c . 904 000 ha in 2002, but there has also been significant turnover, with losses of ancient woodland and a gain from new planting. Structural change has occurred due, in part, to change in management. In 1947 21% of the broadleaved resource was classed as coppice, 28% as scrub and only 51% of the area as high forest, compared with 97% high forest in 2002. This has been accompanied by changes in ground flora and the regeneration pattern of tree species, which will impact upon the character of the woodlands. Woods have also become more ecologically isolated because of the decline in semi-natural vegetation in the surrounding countryside, although the long-term impacts of this are poorly understood. Other factors driving ecological change are increased pollution, change in grazing pressures, climate change, alien species and game management. Overall woodland specialist species and those of open habitats tend to be doing less well than woodland generalists. Progress has been made in reversing some adverse impacts such as acid deposition, and action is being taken to reduce the impact of others such as over-grazing by deer. However, some drivers, notably climate change, will be more difficult to address. In the long term integrated management of woods as landscape components whilst meeting economic and societal needs will be required.  相似文献

Oribatid mite and Carabid beetle communities were investigated at five sites in the ‘Pietraporciana’ and ‘Lucciolabella’ Nature Reserves (central Italy). In this part of southern Tuscany many attempts have been made to encourage the regeneration of native habitats and to preserve existing ones. Human-induced changes in the original forest landscape have had a direct impact on mite and carabid populations. Significant differences in species diversity and abundance among different sites were revealed throughout the sampling period. Species richness, abundance and diversity of oribatid mites decrease from woodland sites to open habitats where evenness was high. There is an inverse trend between the number of species and richness of carabid beetles and those of oribatid mites. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of oribatid and carabid beetle compositions discriminated the sites, demonstrating how even small areas with different vegetation, composition, structure, environment and microclimate were characterised by distinct edaphic populations.  相似文献

Many studies have demonstrated the changes in the spatial patterns of plant and animal communities with respect to habitat fragmentation.Insular communities tend to exhibit some special patterns in connection with the characteristics of island habitats. In this paper, the relationships between richness, assemblage, and abundance of bird communities with respect to island features were analyzed in 20 urban woodlots in Hangzhou,China.Field investigations of bird communities, using the line transect method, were conducted from January to December,1997.Each woodlot was surveyed 16 times during the year. Results indicated that bird richness was higher, per unit area,in the smaller woodlots than the larger ones, and overall bird density decreased with the increase in the size of woodlot. However, the evenness of species abundance increased with the area, and small woodlots were usually dominated by higher density species and large woodlots by medium density species. Most species occurring in the small woodlots also occurred in larger woodlots. Also, bird communities among urban woodlots showed a nestedness pattern in assemblage. These patterns implied that the main impacts of woodland habitat fragmentation are:(1) species are constricted and thus species number will increase at a given sample size;(2) as surface area decreases, the proportion of forest edge species as to interior species will increase;(3)community abundance will therefore increase per unit area but most individuals will be from a few dominant species;and (4) overall species diversity will decrease at a habitat level as well as at a region level. These patterns of community in response to the island features were therefore summarized as "island effects in community".The underlying processes of such observations were also examined in this paper.Woodlot area, edge ratio, isolation, and habitat nestedness were considered as the important factors forming the island effects in community.High heterogeneity between habitats usually contributed most to the maintenance of regional biodiversity, especially in urban woodlots.  相似文献

An account is given of the migration of British summer resident small passerine night migrants across the English Channel in spring and autumn, as detected by radar.
The main times of passage of each species have been determined from the trapping records of Dungeness Bird Observatory.
The tracks of the migrants are consistent with the view that they always head about NNW in spring and SSE in autumn but may be drifted by a cross-wind.
The wind-direction and speed had a paramount influence on the volume of migration in both spring and autumn. Temperature had no effect in autumn, and though there was more migration with warmer than cold weather in spring, this need not have been due to the influence of temperature as such.
Small reversed movements occurred, with southerly winds in autumn or, more doubtfully, with northerly winds in spring.  相似文献

Colonies of Plecotus auritus (L.) and Myotis daubentoni (Kuhl) occupying the same roost showed no interspecific interaction. They utilized separate areas of the roost, departed from and returned to it at different times and foraged in different habitats on different groups of insects. P. auritus emerged from the roost before dusk, foraged singly in woodland areas with slow, hovering flight and fed on insects commonly found flying in woodland, on insects and spiders gleaned from foliage and on insects caught inside the roost. M. daubentoni emerged from the roost after dusk, flew fast and low over water and around riparian vegetation and foraged on long, straight beats. They frequently foraged in groups, and fed opportunistically on insects which fly in swarms in riparian habitats. The diets of the two species occupying the same roost did not differ from those established in areas where each species was found alone.  相似文献

The freshwater Crustacea of the island of Rhum (Inner Hebrides),   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A survey of the freshwater crustacean fauna of the island of Rhum (Inner Hebrides) revealed at least 68 species. Information is provided on die distribution and ecology of these, and individual preferences are noted. These preferences lead to assemblages found in habitats whose ecological attributes can be related to geological, edaphic and chemical features of the environment.
While species diversity on the island as a whole is perhaps greater than might have been anticipated, that of individual water bodies tends to be low, the maximum number ol species in any one water body being 2 7.
The fauna includes a sizeable element of species that favour acidic waters of various kinds or oligotropliic/dystrophic lakes and pools of low ionic content, and includes a number of northern or burco-Alpine species. The origin of this isolated fauna is briefly considered.  相似文献

  • 1 Temperate woodland canopy as a habitat for insects is discussed.
  • 2 A general account is given of the Typhlocybinae as the mesophyll-feeding guild of canopy feeders.
  • 3 Three sampling sites in South Wales are described, from which adult leaf-hoppers were sampled regularly from twelve species of trees during 1974.
  • 4 Rearing records, based on the sampling of last instar nymphs and subsequent rearing of adults, are given.
  • 5 Over 20 000 adult insects of thirty-five identified species were taken during 1974.
  • 6 Results are analysed to compare species associations with different tree species. Most leaf-hoppers show very distinct specific plant-dependent distributions within the canopy. Many are dominantly associated with only one host plant. Others show more complicated patterns of associations. Only one species was found on all trees sampled.
  • 7 The patterns of leafhopper distributions in woodland canopy are compared with previously described grassland habitats. The relative permanence and size of trees may be important factors.

In the Mediterranean region of Europe, land-use changes have allowed for rapid colonisation of open habitats by woody species. As a result, it is critical to gather information on how protected species in open habitats respond to forest spread in such areas. Our objective is to quantify whether spatial heterogeneity of the vegetation associated with recent forest closure influences demographic structure and maternal fertility in a population of the protected Paeonia officinalis L. In closed woodland, adult plants of P. officinalis are almost exclusively vegetative, in open habitats seedlings are rare and on the woodland edge there is a relative over-representation of flowering plants and seedlings. Forest closure dramatically reduces flowering frequency, but has no significant effect on maternal fertility of flowering plants. The spatial aggregation of seedlings close to the maternal plants suggests that dispersal is spatially restricted. Together, these results suggest that the viability of the population requires a transitional habitat between open garrigues or grassland with spaced trees and woodland. A management programme incorporating tree and shrub thinning and cutting of parcels in rotation to maximise the length of the forest edge could maintain a habitat mosaic that favours the persistence of this species in the study site.  相似文献

Aim Climate change has the potential to have significant impacts on the distribution of species and on the composition of habitats. This paper identifies the potential changes in the future distribution of species under the UKCIP98 climate change scenarios, in order that such changes can be taken into account in conservation management. Location The model was applied to Britain and Ireland. Methods A model based on an artificial neural network was used to predict the changing bioclimate envelopes of species in Britain and Ireland. Fifty‐four species representing 15 habitats were modelled. Results The modelled species could be placed into three categories: those losing suitable climate space, those gaining it, and those showing little or no change. When the species were associated with habitats it was found that Arctic–Alpine/montane heath communities were the most sensitive to climate change, followed by pine woodland and beech woodland in southern England. In lowland heath, wet heath, cereal field margins, coastal grazing marsh, drought‐prone acid grassland and calcareous grassland, the species either showed little change or an increase in suitable climate space. The other eight habitats showed a mixed response. Conclusions The species show a variety of responses to climate change and thus their current habitat associations may alter. The uncertain future of some species and habitats is highlighted. Conservation policy and practice will need to be revised in the face of climate change.  相似文献
