Summary A muscle receptor organ is present in the mandible of macruran decapods. The mandibular muscle receptor organ (Mand. MRO) of Homarus gammarus (L.) consists of a ribbon of muscle innervated at its ventral insertion by 10–20 multiterminal sensory neurones. The sensory cells have a small number of dendritic processes.The receptor muscle exhibits some structural properties of both fast and slow muscle. The mean sarcomere length is similar to that of the slow abdominal MRO but the receptor muscle in cross section has a punctate distribution of myofibril bundles more typical of fast muscle.This work was supported by Science Research Council grants B/SR/1871 and BR/G/585.  相似文献

The tissue-specific expression and differential function of the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) in Carcinus maenas indicate an interesting evolutionary history. Previous studies have shown that CHH from the sinus gland X-organ (XO-type) has hyperglycemic activity, whereas the CHH from the pericardial organ (PO-type) neither shows hyperglycemic activity nor it inhibits Y-organ ecdysteroid synthesis. Here we examined the types of selective pressures operating on the variants of CHH in Carcinus maenas. Maximum likelihood-based codon substitution analyses revealed that the variants of this neuropeptide in C. maenas have been subjected to positive Darwinian selection indicating adaptive evolution and functional divergence among the CHH variants leading to two unique groups (PO and XO-type). Although the average ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitution (omega) for the entire coding region is 0.5096, few codon sites showed significantly higher omega (10.95). Comparison of models that incorporate positive selection (omega > 1) with models not incorporating positive selection (omega <1) at certain codon sites failed to reject (p=0) evidence of positive Darwinian selection.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Since glucose is one of the main energetic substrates for general metabolic processes in crustaceans, analysis of carbohydrate levels can furnish information on the energy metabolism of intact animals during osmoregulation.
  • 2.2. Different groups of Chasmagnathus granulata were transferred to different salinities (0 and 40%), and the glucose and glycogen concentrations in blood, gills, muscle and hepatopancreas were determined at the beginning of the experiment and 24, 72, 168 and 360 hr after the salinity changes.
  • 3.3. Differences in tissues carbohydrate levels were observed between summer and winter, that reflected differences in reserve mobilization.
  • 4.4. In the summer, hypo- and hyperosmotic shocks induced an increase in carbohydrate levels in almost all tissues studied, indicating gluconeogenesis.
  • 5.5. In the winter, a carbohydrate mobilization occurred only in the gills and hepatopancreas after both osmotic shocks.
  • 6.6. Thus, the substrate reserve used for energy production required for osmoregulation seems to be dependent on the season and tissues.

Summary The ecdysial glands (Y organs) of the crab Carcinus maenas regress in the presence of an external parasite, Sacculina carcini. This regression is more or less severe and may lead to complete autolysis. Three gradual stages in this involutionary process are described. In stage I, the gland cells are nearly normal. Nuclei and cytoplasmic organelles remain unchanged, but large vacuoles begin to appear. Stage II corresponds to more or less drastic nuclear pyknosis and cytoplasmic alterations. Myelin figures are large and numerous. Lysosomes and autophagic vacuoles with phosphatase activity are abundant. However, the general cellular architecture remains preserved. Stage III corresponds to irreversible cytolysis; nuclear envelopes and plasma membranes have disappeared. What remains is an accumulation of cellular debris becoming engulfed by circulating hemocytes. Not all of the gland cells of any given Y organ show the same degree of regression; degeneration is asynchronous.Structures seemingly corresponding to absorptive roots of the parasite are seen. Their lumen is coated with microvilli. The putative direct and indirect influences of the rhizocephalan parasite on its host are discussed. A protozoan parasite with some features of haplosporidians is described from the European shore crab Carcinus maenas. The parasite establishes a systemic infection through the haemal sinuses and connective tissues. Intracellular stages of the parasite were found within reserve inclusion, connective tissue, and muscle cells, while free forms were present in all haemal spaces. A uninucleate stage appeared to develop to a multinucleate plasmodial stage following multiple mitotic divisions of the nucleus. Histopathology also indicated that nuclear division may occur to form multinucleate plasmodia, in connective tissue, reserve inclusion and muscle cells, the multinucleate plasmodium being enclosed in the host-cell plasma membrane. It appears that the multinucleate plasmodium may then undergo internal cleavages which result in plasmodial fragmentation to form many uninucleate stages. Both stages, but particularly the uninucleate stage, contained cytoplasmic, large, ovoid, dense vesicles (DVs), some of which contained an internal membrane separating the medulla from the cortex, as in haplosporosomes. Golgi-like cisternae, closely associated with the nuclear membrane, formed DVs and haplosporosome-like bodies (HLBs), superficially resembling viruses. Infrequently, HLBs may condense to form haplosporosomes. The DVs, as in spores of some Haplosporidium spp. and paramyxeans, may give rise to, and are homologous with, haplosporosomes. Other features, such as the presence of an intranuclear mitotic spindle, lipid droplets, and attachment of DVs and haplosporosomes to the nuclear membrane, indicate that the C. maenas parasite is a haplosporidian. A similar organism reported from the haemolymph of spot prawns Pandalus spp., and haplosporidians reported from prawns Penaeus vannamei and crabs Callinectes sapidus may belong to this group. It is concluded that the well-characterised haplosporidians of molluscs and some other invertebrates may not be characteristic of the whole phylum, and that morphologically and developmentally similar organisms may also be haplosporidians, whether they have haplosporosomes or not.  相似文献

In an effort to understand the variation and probable origin of a female copulatory organ found in isopods of the asellote superfamily Janiroidea, the morphology of female reproductive structures among the Asellota was surveyed. Examples of four asellote superfamilies were studied using whole mount staining after potassium-hydroxide maceration or clearing with lactic acid. In contradiction to previous conclusions, the cuticular organ is shown to occur in the more primitive Asellota, although the position of its opening varies considerably. In the genera Asellus, and Stenetrium, Munna, and Santia, the cuticular organ originates adjacent to the oopore, and in the remaining janiroidean isopods, it is placed dorsally and usually anteriorly. This information permits a simple hypothesis explaining the origin of the cuticular organ: it was present in the proximate ancestor of the Asellota and evolved to the janiroidean condition by anterodorsal migration.  相似文献

The carotenoid pigments of the hepatopancreas, ovaries and epidermis of Carcinus maenas were investigated. The following pigments were identified: β-carotene, δ-carotene, echinenone, isocryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, flavoxanthin and astacene.
The relative abundance of these pigments in the three tissues and the presence of possible hydroxy and keto intermediates suggest the metabolism of astaxanthin from β-carotene. The metabolic pathway in Carcinus is discussed in relation to recent studies on other invertebrates.  相似文献

Summary Polyclonal antibodies were raised in rabbits against synthetic crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) conjugated to bovine thyroglobulin, and were used to map CCAP-immunoreactive structures in the central nervous system of Carcinus maenas. As expected, the neurohemal pericardial organs (PO) displayed abundant immunoreactivity in nerve fibers and terminals. In addition, immunoreactive neurons were demonstrated in other parts of the nervous system. At least some of them do not appear to terminate in neurohemal structures and may have a non-endocrine, as yet unknown function. Immunoreactive perikarya with a diameter of 25–30 m occur in the brain. They project into the optic and antennary neuropil, and into the eyestalk. One cell was found in the medulla terminalis of the eyestalk and in the connective ganglion, respectively. From the latter, axonal branches could be traced into the brain and the thoracic ganglia (TG). In the TG, small-diameter perikarya give rise to extensive networks of varicose fibers. Some of the perikarya occur in a characteristic paired arrangement with larger CCAP-immunoreactive somata (diameter 40–50 m). These pairs of one small and one large cell occur in all mouthpart and leg segments of the TG, except the abdominal ganglia (AG), where only large cells were found. The main projections of the large neurons comprise one or more fibers in each of the seven segmental nerves (SN), leading to neurosecretory terminals in the PO. The fibers in the SN are joined by branches of an ascending axonal tract from the large perikarya in the AG. The large-type perikarya are considered to be the principal source of CCAP in the PO. The optic ganglia in the eyestalk, except the medulla terminalis, the neurohemal sinus gland and the stomatogastric nervous system are devoid of CCAP-immunoreactivity.In axon terminals of the PO, CCAP is not colocalized with other PO-neuropeptides, i.e. proctolin-, FMRFamide-like, and Leu-enkephalin-like immunoreactive materials. Electron-microscopic immunocytochemistry revealed a distinct CCAP-containing granule type in specific axon profiles and terminals in the PO.The architecture of CCAP-immunoreactive neurons is discussed with respect to previous morphological studies on the origin and pathways of fibers terminating in the PO.Dedicated to Professor K.E. The location and external anatomy of the CAP organs of Jasus novaehollandiae were examined and found to be similar to those in Homarus gammarus (Laverack, 1978a). Histological examination of the organs showed threads or filaments arising from the internal surface of the spines to run through canals in the cuticle and join with dendrites of CAP sensory cells in the region of the hypodermis. The CAP neuron cell bodies lie in the nearby chordotonal organ strand. It is demonstrated that flexion of the limb causes the articulating membrane to deflect the spines of the sensillae distally. A variety of experimental techniques used to investigate the physiology of the organs reveals why previously reported attempts to record from the receptors failed. Direct stimulation of the sensillae with an analogue of the membrane and summation of many traces revealed phase constant responses at points corresponding to the covering and uncovering of the sensillae.  相似文献

The growth and spread of non-indigenous green crabs (Carcinus maenas) in Atlantic Canada is of concern to the sustainability of shellfish resources, particularly in areas recently invaded. Commercial green crab fishing has been initiated on Prince Edward Island to help control this species and provide a new resource for inshore fishermen. Developing a soft-shell crab product modelled after the Venetian ‘Moleche’ would provide an economic incentive beyond the existing hard-shell crab bait market. However, answers to questions such as the timing and characteristics of green crab moulting are required. A pilot study conducted in 2014–2015 collected seven groups of crabs and held them in individual compartments for 2–4 weeks to record moulting rates and physical characteristics. We found that a synchronized ‘moulting window’ occurs during July for male crabs. Field experiments in 2015 had an average moulting rate of 34%, with group-specific rates as high as 60%. The same cohort of crabs held in the laboratory had an average moulting rate of 48%, with group-specific rates as high as 75%. We observed a gradual increase in moulting rates from early to mid-July, after which all crabs caught had recently moulted, with evidence of new carapaces on all crabs. In 2015, the moulting window followed a 5°C increase in water temperature. Regarding morphology, the presence of a ‘halo’ on the episternites of the carapace was an indicator that a crab would soon moult. These promising results represent the first step in assessing the feasibility of a soft-shell, green crab industry.  相似文献

Formation of a circular hole 8–10 mm in diameter in the calcified layers of the carapace from crabs in stage C4 of the molt cycle stimulates the tissue under and adjacent to the injury to deposit a unique calcified cuticular material below the intact membranous layer. Deposition was followed for 69 days using light microscopic histology, histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy. Quantitative analyses of CaCO3 were conducted using atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Gran titration. Spatial distribution of CaCO3 was determined with X-radiography. A scab is formed by day two under the injury. At four days the epithelium changes from squamous to columnar and deposits a PAS-positive layer with an irregular lamellar fine structure, followed by highly organized lamellae structurally similar to normal exocuticle. Histochemically, however, these lamellae resemble normal endocuticle. CaCO3 is evident external to the outermost lamellae by day eleven as a fused mass of aragonite granules. The lamellar region calcifies proximally from the outer surface and is amorphous CaCO3. Repair cuticle is approximately 20%CaCO3 by weight.  相似文献

Summary The phyllobranchiate gills of the green shore crab Carcinus maenas have been examined histologically and ultrastructurally. Each gill lamella is bounded by a chitinous cuticle. The apical surface of the branchial epithelium contacts this cuticle, and a basal lamina segregates the epithelium from an intralamellar hemocoel. In animals acclimated to normal sea water, five epithelial cell types can be identified in the lamellae of the posterior gills: chief cells, striated cells, pillar cells, nephrocytes, and glycocytes. Chief cells are the predominant cells in the branchial epithelium. They are squamous or low cuboidal and likely play a role in respiration. Striated cells, which are probably involved in ionoregulation, are also squamous or low cuboidal. Basal folds of the striated cells contain mitochondria and interdigitate with the bodies and processes of adjacent cells. Pillar cells span the hemocoel to link the proximal and distal sides of a lamella. Nephrocytes are large, spherical cells with voluminous vacuoles. They are rimmed by foot processes or pedicels and frequently associate with the pillar cells. Glycocytes are pleomorphic cells packed with glycogen granules and multigranular rosettes. The glycocytes often mingle with the nephrocytes. Inclusion of the nephrocytes and glycocytes as members of the branchial epithelium is justified by their participation in intercellular junctions and their position internal to the epithelial basal lamina.  相似文献

Carcinus maenas (Decapoda: Portunidae) has proven a highly successful invasive marine species whose potential economic and ecological impacts are of great concern worldwide. Here, we characterize 14 polymorphic microsatellite loci in C. maenas and its sister species Carcinus aestuarii. These markers will prove useful for fine‐scale genetic analyses of native and introduced populations, for assessment of the sources and routes of invasion and for evaluation of post‐invasion population dynamics.  相似文献

Summary Respiratory metabolism in the high-altitude crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus from Lake Tahoe (California-Nevada, U.S.A.) was investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. In general, oxygen consumption was found to be directly proportional to size when expressed per individual, and inversely proportional to size when expressed per ash-free gram dry weight per unit time. No significant variations in respiratory rates were observed between males and females. There was little variation in uptake over a temperature range of 5°C to 12.5°C, while the lowest and highest uptake values were observed at 0°C and 15°C respectively. An increase in temperature above 15°C, however, resulted in a decrease in respiratory activity. These results closely correlate with patterns of ventilatory activity, oxygen extraction efficiency, and seasonal feeding and reproductive activity in Pacifastacus as related to the annual temperature profile for their Lake Tahoe habitat. These results, as well as the extremely low tolerance of this species for low oxygen levels, suggest temperature as the possible critical environmental factor in the determination of the nature of seasonal metabolic cycles. It is concluded that Pacifastacus shows little tolerance for fluctuations in environmental oxygen and temperature and is well adapted to the narrow range of condition present in its Lake Tahoe habitat.  相似文献

Larvae of decapod and stomatopod crustaceans possess paired compound eyes not unlike those of adult crustaceans. However, the visual demands of larval and adult life differ considerably. Furthermore, the eyes of adult stomatopods appear to be far more specialized than those of the larvae. We examined eyes of several stomatopod species just before and after larval metamorphosis. At this time, the entire larval retina is joined by a new, adult‐type retinal array which gradually replaces the remnants of the larval retina. The new retina of the postlarva is anatomically similar to that of the full‐grown adult, and has virtually identical assemblages of intrarhabdomal filters. We determined the photopigments of Gonodactylus aloha, the only species for which we were able to obtain both larval and adult specimens, using microspectrophotometry. The single middle‐wavelength larval rhodopsin (λmax= 499 nm) disappears at metamorphosis; none of the 10 classes of adult rhodopsins has λmax between 473 and 510 nm. This metamorphic change of visual pigment does not occur in a comparison species of decapod crustacean, the blue crab Callinectes sapidus. Here, rhodopsins both of the megalops larva and the adult had λmax at 503–504 nm. The difference between these two species can be explained by the varying ecological requirements of their larvae and adults, and more study of visual pigments in retinas of larval and adult crustaceans is warranted.  相似文献

1. Administration of biogenic amines into intact Carcinus maenas induces dose- and timedependent elevation of hemolymph glucose level.2. Removal of the neurosecretory centre containing the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) by ablation of the eyestalks did not induce hypoglycemia.3. Injection of dopamine (DA) into eyestalkless crabs showed no hyperglycemic effect, while serotonin (5-HT), epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), and octopamine (OA) elevated glucose levels.4. The dopaminergic effect was significantly reduced by administration of trifluoperazine (TFP).5. 5-HT and OA were found to be strong elevators of glucose levels, while the other biogenic amines had moderate effects only.6. The results indicate, that DA exerts its hyperglycemic effect by stimulating the release of CHH from the eyestalk neurosecretory centre. Elevation of hemolymph glucose level by 5-HT, OA, E, and NE, occurs independently of CHH.  相似文献
