The thermoregulatory characteristics of three species of Cryptomys from Zambia and Angola are examined and, together with published data on four other species of Cryptomys from southern Africa, used to determine whether scaling occurs in this genus of subterranean rodents. The thermoregulatory properties of acclimated giant Zambian mole-rats, Cryptomys mechowi ( =267 g), Angolan mole-rats, Cryptomys bocagei ( =94 g) and Zambian common mole-rats Cryptomys hottentotus amatus ( =77 g) are as follows. Mean resting metabolic rates (RMRs) within the respective thermoneutral zones were 0.60±0.08 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=12) for C. mechowi; 0.74±0.06 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=8) for C. bocagei and 0.63±0.06 cm3O2 g-1 h-1 (n=21) for C. h. amatus. The thermoneutral zones (TNZs) of all three species are narrow: 29–30°C for C. mechowi; 31.5–32.5°C for C. bocagei and 28–32° C for C. h. amatus. The increase in mean RMR at the lowest temperatures tested (15° C for C. mechowi, 18° C for C. bocagei and C. h. amatus) was 2.35, 2.2 and 3.82 times their RMR in the TNZ respectively. Body temperatures are low, 34±0.53° C (n=24) for C. mechowi, 33.7±0.32° C (n=20) for C. bocagei and 33.8±0.43° C (n=40) for C. h amatus. At the lower limit of thermoneutrality, conductances are 0.09±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=30) in C. mechowi; 0.12±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=20) in C. bocagei and 0.12±0.03 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=32) in C. h. amatus. The range in mean body mass among the seven species of Cryptomys examined for scaling was 60 g (C. darlingi) to 267 g (C. mechowi). There is no clear relationship between RMR within the TNZ and body mass. The resultant relationship is represented by the power curve RMR=2.45 mass-0.259.  相似文献

Cryptomys h. hottentotus occurs in mesic and semi-arid regions of South Africa. It lives in colonies ofup to 14 individuals, in which reproduction is limited to one ofthe largest males and the largest female in the colony.
Reproduction and details of colony size and the number of breeding animals in a colony are described for one complete and two incomplete field-captured colonies. One incomplete colony was kept in captivity for more than 3 years, whereas the complete colony was autopsied.
The social hierarchy of the common mole-rat is almost linear and has a value of 0.7 1 calculated from Landau's linearity index. Subordinate mole-rats weighed less than dominant mole-rats. The reproductive mole-rats are the dominant animals within the colony. The non-reproductive females rank lowest in the hierarchy.
Mating was not confined to a particular season, but occurred more frequently during the summer months. The alpha male initiated pre-copulatory behaviour. The gestation length is 55 to 66 days (n = 2). Two litters each of three pups were born to the colony during captivity. The pups were relatively altricial. They wandered out of the nest 5 days after birth, began to eat solids when 10 days old, and were fully weaned at 4 weeks. When 2 weeks old the pups began to spar with each other and with some of the adult colony members, but levels of aggression were never high. The pups did not disperse but were incorporated into the colony, this suggesting that C. h. hottentotus colonies are largely composed of related individuals.  相似文献

The ecological constraints prevalent in arid environments havepromoted the evolution of social groups with a high reproductiveskew in mole rat species occurring there. Outbred social bathyergidsface conflict between maintaining colony integrity to enhancepersonal foraging success and hence survival, and dispersalto maximum individual lifetime reproductive success (LRS). Thisconflict will be a crucial determinant of the response of colonymembers to the presence of foreign conspecifics. We investigatedhow ecological constraints, sex, and reproductive status influencethe outcome of meetings between foreign common mole rats (Cryptomyshottentotus hottentotus) in a series of dyadic encounters. Individualsfrom two localities, at the extremes of an aridity gradient,were used to assess the effects of aridity. The effects of sexand reproductive status were investigated by trials betweenindividuals of differing sex and status. The arid populationrevealed substantially higher levels of rejection than the mesicpopulation. Sex and status played a significant role in moderatingindividual response. For both populations, encounters betweendifferent-sexed individuals produced lower levels of rejectionthan those between same-sexed individuals. For the mesic site,rejection was greatest for encounters between reproductive animals.Conversely, for the arid site, the levels of rejection werecomparatively high and comparable for all combinations of reproductivestatus. Ecological constraints, sex, and reproductive statusare significant factors in interactions between foreign commonmole rats, ultimately influencing individual survival, colonyintegrity and the differential LRS of all colony members. Ourresults provide insight into the evolution and maintenance offamily groups within the bathyergids.  相似文献

The feeding habits and reproductive biology of the Ghana mole‐rat, Cryptomys zechi (Matchie), were studied in a Guinea savanna woodland in Ghana. Both tunnel contents and stomach content analysis indicated that bulbs and tubers constituted the commonest and most preferred food items, although some animal food materials were also consumed. Five plant species, Urgenia altissima, Manihot utilisima, Curuligo sp., Oxalis corniculata and Archis hypogea, were the most popular plant food source. Breeding occurred during the rainy season (March–August) and was at its peak in July. There is evidence that the species is capable of producing two litters in a year. In a colony, reproduction is restricted to one female and one male. Males reached sexual maturity at a lower body weights (105 g) than females (155 g). Estimated mean litter size was 1.5 (range 1–2), the smallest among the bathergids. Available data on birth weights of three other species of social Cryptomys indicate that C. zechi has the highest birth weight, which is comparable to that of solitary bathyergids.  相似文献

The skull of most subterranean tooth-digging rodents is markedly affected by their digging mode. In the present study, we investigated the cranial variation in a strictly subterranean, highly specialized Afrotropical tooth-digger, Heliophobius argenteocinereus (Bathyergidae, Rodentia), using a geometric morphometric approach and evaluated the effect of different factors on size and shape differences among four populations. No evidence for sexual dimorphism was found in skull size or shape. The cranial shape variation was large and influenced mainly by the type of habitat (miombo woodland versus farmland and grassland) and the latitudinal gradient. The dorsal side of the skull appears to be more plastic and adaptable to local environments, as well as more independent of size, than the ventral side. Only the shortening of the rostrum is presumably an adaptive process independent of size that leads to an increase of efficacy of the tooth-digging apparatus in Heliophobius , whereas the increase in the in-force and the more procumbent incisors both comprise size-related changes caused by ontogenetic allometric growth.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 822–831.  相似文献

The genetic variations of 35 individuals of the Shimokita A1 troop of mainland Japanese macaques,Macaca fuscata fuscata, which live at the northern end of the habitat of the species, were investigated using 33 electrophoretically detectable blood protein loci. Among the loci examined, six were polymorphic. The average heterozygosity per individual was calculated as 0.0442. This was the highest value among all troops of Japanese macaques so far investigated. The mainland macaques of the Shimokita A1 troop were more differentiated genetically from other mainland macaque troops than were Yaku macaques, the subspeciesM. f. yakui.  相似文献

【目的】油茶象Curculio chinensis Chevrolat是我国特有木本油料树种——小果油茶Camellia meiocarpa Hu的专性蛀果害虫,常导致大量落果。在本研究样地,啮齿动物对落果及果内象虫具强烈捕食作用。本研究旨在揭示小果油茶、油茶象和啮齿动物三者间复杂的相互作用及其行为机制,为油茶象科学防控提供理论依据。【方法】2013年在湖南省益阳市赫山区小果油茶林于落果季节系统调查6 161个落果,检查油茶象寄生及啮齿动物捕食情况,并对果长、果径和壳厚进行了测量。用线性回归模型分析象蛀率与果径、壳厚和效费比以及油茶象死亡率与调查日期的相关性;用独立样本t检验分析啮齿动物捕食的象蛀落果与非象蛀落果大小差异性。【结果】象蛀落果2013年7月2日始至果实采收止,具明显高峰期,即同年8月16日至8月23日。啮齿动物捕食贯穿整个落果季节,其高峰期与象蛀落果高峰期一致。象蛀落果中4-5龄幼虫所占比例高达85.5%。油茶象寄生率与果径不相关,与壳厚显著线性负相关,与效费比显著线性正相关。象蛀果实脱落越早,果实发育受限越重,油茶象幼虫死亡率越高。被啮齿动物捕食的油茶果实中,小果实占76.9%,其种子被啮噬殆尽。啮齿动物对象蛀果实的捕食率为24.0%,此类果实中,象蛀种子多破损,非象蛀种子几乎不被捕食。啮齿动物啮噬果实中,象蛀果实的果长和果径均显著大于非象蛀果实的。【结论】本研究明确了研究样地小果油茶落果、象蛀落果及啮齿动物捕食的时间格局。象虫蛀食导致果实发育正常生理活动受阻是油茶果实脱落的根本原因,不支持主动防御假说。油茶象产卵行为在果实大小与壳厚两种矛盾的选择压力间存在权衡,其本质可能是亲代雌虫繁殖力与后代幼虫适合度间的权衡。产卵时间格局通过影响寄主果实发育最终对后代幼虫适合度产生影响。研究样地中,啮齿动物能准确探测并捕食大果实中油茶象幼虫,是油茶象重要的天敌控制因子。  相似文献

We describe the outcome of a comprehensive cytogenetic survey of the common mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus, based on G and C banding, fluorescence in situ hybridisation and the analysis of meiotic chromosomes using immunostaining of proteins involved in the formation of synaptonemal complex (SCP1 and SCP3). We identified the presence of a Y-autosome translocation that is responsible for a fixed diploid number difference between males (2n = 53) and females (2n = 54), a character that likely defines the C. hottentotus lineage. Immunostaining, combined with C banding of spermatocytes, revealed a linearised sex trivalent with X1 at one end and X2 at the other, with evidence of reduced recombination between Y and X2 that seems to be heterochromatin dependant in the C. hottentotus lineage. We suggest that this could depict the likely initial step in the differentiation of a true neo-X, and that this may mimic an early stage in the mammalian meiotic chain formation, an evolutionary process that has been taken to an extreme in a monotreme mammal, the platypus. Sooty tern (Sterna fuscata) rookeries are scattered throughout the tropical oceans. When not nesting, individuals wander great distances across open seas, but, like many other seabirds, they tend to be site-faithful to nesting locales in successive years. Here we examine the matrilineal history of sooty terns on a global scale. Assayed colonies within an ocean are poorly differentiated in mitochondrial DNA sequence, a result indicating tight historical ties. However, a shallow genealogical partition distinguishes Atlantic from Indo-Pacific rookeries. Phylogeographic patterns in the sooty tern are compared to those in other colonially nesting seabirds, as well as in the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), an analogue of tropical seabirds in some salient aspects of natural history. Phylogeographic structure within an ocean is normally weak in seabirds, unlike the pronounced matrilineal structure in green turtles. However, the phylogeographic partition between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific rookeries in sooty terns mirrors, albeit in shallower evolutionary time, the major matrilineal subdivision in green turtles. Thus, global geology has apparently influenced historical gene movements in these two circumtropical species.  相似文献

Genetic variability measured by allozymic electrophoresis has been studied in several species of the subterranean rodent genus Ctenomys (Octodontidae). The study was carried out with the main purpose of analysing a special group known as the 'Corrientes group' which inhabits the province of Corrientes in Argentina. The members of the group are, with high probability, isolated reproductively due to their karyotypic differences diploid numbers are between 42 and 70). To evaluate whether the chromosomal differences were the causes of speciation or if they arose a posteriori, we compared the level of the genetic distance among taxa within the orrientes group with all those measured between intraspecific populations in Ctenomys . The results indicate that the distances among the populations of the Corrientes group are at or below the level of those measured among traspecific populations in Ctenomys . Thus, it is unlikely that genetic differentiation triggered speciation. It is shown that this low level of genetic differentiation is not in contradiction with the high levels expected for species originating from one of the possible mechanisms of chromosomal speciation named, chromosomal transilience. Although for geographical reasons it seems obviousthat gene flow is precluded among the members of the Corrientes group, the Slatkin method for estimating Nm values was also used. Because high values of Nm exist but no isolation by distance could be detected, it is suggested that reproductive and geographical isolation are very ecent. Finally, analysis of population variability suggests that the high levels of heterozygosity observed (a) can be explained by the population structure, and (b) are within the range of expected values if bottlenecks have occurred in the recent history of the Corrientes group. As a general conclusion, the results indicate that in the Corrientes group the genetic data support a putative causal role for chromosomes in speciation.  相似文献

We assessed the validity of two gekkonid species, Gekko yakuensis and G. hokouensis, in southern Japan. We first assigned all 398 specimens into 18 samples merely on the basis of localities. By conducting significance test for deviations of genotype frequencies from Hardy‐Weinberg at 11 allozyme loci, we checked the reproductive unity of constituents in each of those local samples, and where necessary, rearranged them into subsamples on the basis of genetic markers so that we recognized minimum reproductively cohesive units. We then compared allele frequencies among all samples and subsamples examined. Results clearly indicated that all but two can be classified into two groups that can be discriminated from each other by remarkable allele frequency differences at four diagnostic loci, and by large genetic distances even between sympatric subsamples. Observations of morphological features of the samples and subsamples confirmed that the two groups correspond to G. yakuensis and G. hokouensis, supporting validities of these two species. Allele frequency comparisons, however, also revealed that the remaining two samples, both from southern Kyushu, possessed ‘marker alleles' of both G. yakuensis and G. hokouensis at all four diagnostic loci. These samples thus were considered to represent populations that have been derived through hybridization of the two species. Detailed analyses for genetic structures demonstrated that all hybrid genotypes in the two samples are post‐Fi generations with only one individual resulting from the back‐cross with a pure line population of G. yakuensis. This finding negates the possibility that the hybrid populations are maintained by a constant supply of newly produced Fj hybrids, but suggests that the hybrid genotypes constitute stable breeding populations. This implies that the genealogical independence of G. yakuensis and G. hokouensis in several other sympatric areas has been maintained by operations of some isolation mechanisms at a pre‐mating phase. Investigations of the morphological variation in each sample or subsample revealed that although the two species can be externally largely discriminated from each other by slight modifications of the currently used diagnoses, it is difficult to detect their hybrids based solely on the morphological features.  相似文献

The minor variant of the economically important cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis, usually appears in commercial production ponds under solar radiation. However, how sensitive the minor variant to solar UVR and whether its occurrence relates to the solar exposures are not known. We investigated the photochemical efficiency of PSII and growth rate of D-0083 strain and its minor variant in semi-continuous cultures under PAR (400–700 nm) alone, PAR + UV-A (320–400 nm) and PAR + UV-A + UV-B (280–700 nm) of solar radiation. The effective quantum yield of D-0083 at 14:00 p.m. decreased by about 86% under PAR, 87% under PAR + UV-A and 92% under PAR + UV-A + UV-B (280–315 nm), respectively. That of the minor variant was reduced by 93% under PAR and to undetectable values in the presence of UV-A or UV-A + UV-B. Diurnal change of the yield showed constant pattern during long-term (10 days) exposures, high in the early morning and late afternoon but the lowest at noontime in both strains, with the UVR-related inhibition being always higher in the variant than D-0083. During the long-term exposures, cells of D-0083 acclimated faster to solar UV radiation and showed paralleled growth rates among the treatments with or without UVR at the end of the experiment; however, growth of the minor variant was significantly reduced by UV-A and UV-B throughout the period. Comparing to the major strain D-0083, the minor variant was more sensitive to UVR in terms of its growth, quantum yield and acclimation to solar radiation.  相似文献

Abstract. The oral susceptibility of 22 South African livestock associated Culicoides species to infection with bluetongue virus serotype 1 (BTV‐1) and its replication rate in C. imicola Kieffer and C. bolitinos Meiswinkel (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) over a range of different incubation periods and temperatures are reported. Field‐collected Culicoides were fed on sheep blood containing 7.5 log10TCID50/mL of BTV‐1, and then held at constant different temperatures. Virus replication was measured over time by assaying individual flies in BHK‐21 cells using a microtitration procedure. Regardless of the incubation temperatures (10, 15, 18, 23.5 and 30°C) the mean virus titre/midge, infection rates (IR) and the proportion of infected females with transmission potential (TP = virus titre/midge ≥ 3 log10 TCID50) were found to be significantly higher in C. bolitinos than in C. imicola. Results from days 4–10 post‐infection (dpi), at 15–30°C, shows that the mean IR and TP values in C. bolitinos ranged from 36.7 to 87.8%, and from 8.4 to 87.7%, respectively; in C. imicola the respective values were 11.0–13.7% and 0–46.8%. In both species the highest IR was recorded at 25°C and the highest TP at 30°C. The time required for the development of TP in C. bolitinos ranged from 2 dpi at 25°C to 8 dpi at 15°C. In C. imicola it ranged from 4 dpi at 30°C to 10 dpi at 23.5°C; no individuals with TP were detected at 15°C. There was no evidence of virus replication in flies held at 10°C. When, at various points of incubation, individual flies were transferred from 10°C to 23.5°C and then assayed 4–10 days later, virus was recovered from both species. The mean virus titres/midge, and proportion of individuals with TP and IR, were again significantly higher in C. bolitinos than in C. imicola. Also the infection prevalence in C. magnus Colaço was higher than in C. imicola. Low infection prevalences were found in C. bedfordi Ingram & Macfie, C. leucostictus Kieffer, C. pycnostictus Ingram & Macfie, C. gulbenkiani Caeiro and C. milnei Austen. BTV‐1 was not detected in 14 other Culicoides species tested; however, some of these were tested in limited numbers. The present study indicates a multivector potential for BTV transmission in South Africa. In C. imicola and C. bolitinos the replication rates are distinct and are significantly influenced by temperature. These findings are discussed in relation to the epidemiology of bluetongue in South Africa.  相似文献

Background

Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1) are known for their broad range of detoxification and in the metabolism of xenobiotics. Recent studies revealed the relationship of GSTs variants with T2DM and CAD. In this case-control study we ascertained the association of GSTs variants in association with the development of CAD in patients with T2DM.

Methods

From the Southern part of India, we enrolled 222 T2DM patients, 290 T2DM patients with CAD and 270 healthy controls matched for age, sex and origin. Serum lipid profiles were measured and DNA was extracted from the blood samples. Multiplex PCR for GSTM1/T1 (null polymorphism) and PCR-RFLP for GSTP1 (105 A > G), were performed for genotyping of study participants. Gene frequency and lipid profiles were statistically analyzed for disease association.

Results

Regression analysis showed that, GSTM1-null genotype is associated with a 2-fold increase (OR = 2.925; 95% CI = 2.078–4.119; P < 0.0001) and GSTT1-null genotype is associated with a 3-fold increase (OR = 3.114; 95% CI = 2.176–4.456; P < 0.0001) to T2DM development. Ile/Val and Val/Val genotypes of GSTP1 also showed a significant risk for T2DM (OR = 1.423, CI = 1.041–1.946; P = 0.027 and OR = 1.829, CI = 1.064–3.142; P = 0.029). Increased odds ratio showed that GSTT1-null genotype had a moderately higher occurrence in T2DM–CAD patients (OR = 1.918, 95% CI = 1.144–3.214; P = 0.014) than T2DM patients without CAD. The level of HDL has significantly decreased in GSTT1-present than in GSTT1-null genotype (43.50 ± 4.10 vs. 45.20 ± 3.90; P = 0.004) when compared with control and T2DM patients. However, LDL level showed a significant increase in GSTT1-null than GSTT1-present genotype (108.70 ± 16.90 vs. 102.20 ± 12.60; P = 0.005). Although the GSTM1-null polymorphism showed no correlation with lipid profiles among T2DM and T2DM with CAD patients, GSTT1-null polymorphism attained a statistical significance for the level of LDL (127 ± 28.20 vs. 134 ± 29.10; P = 0.039) and triglycerides in T2DM with CAD patients (182.10 ± 21.10 vs. 191.20 ± 24.10; P = 0.018).

Conclusion

Our work concludes that GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 variants might contribute to the development of T2DM and GSTT1 variant alone is involved in the development of T2DM associated CAD complications in the South Indian population.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of various feeding patterns of emodin on growth, non-specific immune response, and disease resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in juvenile Wuchang bream. Healthy Megalobrama amblycephala (initial weight: 3.47 ± 0.032) were grown in a circulating water system for 8 weeks. Five groups were studied: one control group was fed with a basal diet for eight weeks (Pattern 1, P1), and three treatment groups were fed with a trial diet of 30 mg emodin kg−1 at one-week (Pattern 2, P2), two-week (Pattern 3, P3), four-week (Pattern 4, P4) intervals. The final treatment group maintained the trial diet for the entire eight-week study duration (Pattern 5, P5). Results indicated that different feeding patterns of emodin significantly influenced the weight gain rate of Wuchang bream (P < 0.05). Fish in the P4 treatment group had significantly higher rates of weight gain (WG) than those in other treatment groups. There were no significant differences in survival rates or feed conversion ratios (FCR) between treatment groups and the control group. White blood cell count (WBC), respiratory burst activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) activity were shown to increase at first and then decrease from P3 condition to P5 condition. Fish under P4 treatment showed the most significant improvement of all tested parameters compared to control. Significantly higher levels (P < 0.05) of plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity were observed in P2 and P4 treatment groups when compared with the control group, while no significant differences were observed in the AST and ALT activity of fish in P2, P3, P4 and P5 treatment groups. In a bacterial challenge experiment with A. hydrophila, fish under P4 and P5 treatment showed lower cumulative mortality than the control group. The results of this study suggest that an initial 4-week feeding interval is recommended for the economic and practical culture of M. amblycephala.  相似文献
