The induction of summer hibernation in the 13-lined ground squirrel (Citellus tridecemlineatus) by intravenous injection of plasma obtained from winter hibernating ground squirrels was confirmed. Hibernation was also induced by injection of urine from arousing winter ground squirrels. Results support the “trigger” theory of hibernation proposed by Dawe and Spurrier (3) and also suggest that tissues are set free from “trigger” influence during winter arousal by the excretion of “trigger.”  相似文献

The distal part of pineal gland of the Mongolian ground squirrel was ultrastructurally studied. The gland was composed of low electron-dense parenchymal cells, among which glial cells, pigment cells, blood vessels and neural elements were occasionally interspersed. The pinealocytes contained numerous mitochondria, lysosomes, microtubules, microfilaments, Golgi apparatus and free ribosomes, as well as less prominent profiles of rough- and smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticula and some cilia, centrioles, synaptic ribbons and few subsurface cisterns. Some pinealocytes were vacuolated. The content of the vacuoles released into the extracellular space by exocytosis could be observed. The gap junctions between pinealocytes were also observed. Of particular interest was that many mitochondria "fused together" and formed gap junction-like structure in about five percent pinealocytes. The pigment cell has a amorphous nucleus which contains many aggregated chromatin, its cell membrane has a few microvilli projecting into a central lumen, these features may indicated that this kind of cell differs either from the pinealocyte or astrocyte. There are axo-axonic synapses or axo-dendritic synapses between neuron processes or between neuron processes and pinealocytes.  相似文献

Spontaneous diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in six of 126, 13-lined ground squirrels, Citellus tridecemlineatus. Serum glucose values were significantly higher in the diabetic ground squirrels than in the non-diabetic ground squirrels, while serum insulin values of fasted diabetic squirrels were significantly lower than fasted nondiabetic ground squirrels. In addition, the classic diabetic signs of poly-dipsia, polyuria, glycosuria, ketonuria, polyphasia, and weight loss were present. The proportion of islet tissue to total pancreatic area in diabetic ground squirrels was less than 25% of that in the nondiabetic ground squirrels. Both the number and size of the islets of Langerhans in diabetic ground squirrels were less than those in nondiabetic ground squirrels.  相似文献

Summary Perfused hearts of C. tereticaudus cease to beat at an average T A slightly below 5.7±0.7° C, whereas perfused hearts of C. tridecemlineatus stop at a T A slightly below –0.7±0.9° C. Although both species are approximately the same size and both can hibernate, the desert inhabiting C. tereticaudus has a smaller heart which beats slower, consistent with its lower metabolism, than the plains inhabiting C. tridecemlineatus. It is suggested that ecological factors were more important than taxonomic characteristics in the development of these specific features of hibernators adaptive for different habitats. This study was supported by a Public Health Service Grant GM 15889 from the National Institutes of Health. A comparative study was made of the extent of phosphorylation of myosin regulatory light chains and C-protein from the left ventricle of the hibernant ground squirrel Citellus undulatus during the periods of hibernation and activity. During hibernation, the light chains were found to be completely dephosphorylated. In active animals, the share of phosphorylated light chains averaged 40–45%. The extent of cardiac C-protein phosphorylation in hibernation was about twice higher than in the active state. Seasonal differences in phosphorylation of the two proteins of ground squirrel myocardium are discussed in the context of adaptation to hibernation.  相似文献

Summary Monthly observations of the Gomori-positive hypothalamo-hypophysial neurosecretory system (HHNS) of the ground squirrel, Citellus erythrogenys Brandt, were carried out light microscopically using several quantitative methods. From the beginning of hibernation, formation of neurosecretory material (NSM) in the neurosecretory cells (NSC) progressively decreases and release of neurohormones from the HHNS is almost fully inhibited. A maximal accumulation of NSM in the perikarya of the NSC and in the posterior pituitary (PP) is found in December. By this time the volume of the cell nuclei and nucleoli is at a minimum. Signs of activation of the HHNS appear and become more conspicuous as the time of arousal from torpor approaches. The amount of NSM in the NSC and the PP decreases simultaneously with the increase in volume of the NSC. Hyperemia and activation of glial elements is visible throughout the HHNS. The morphological signs of activation reach their peak in March. After reproduction is completed (April to beginning of May), the NSC and the PP are almost devoid of NSM. Beginning with June and during the summer and autumn months a progressive accumulation of NSM in the NSC and the PP parallels gradual diminution in the volume of the NSC structures and the glial cells. Mechanisms and effector pathways by which the HHNS influences seasonal adaptation of the organism and reproduction are discussed.  相似文献
