The validity of several published investigations of the possibility that residential exposures to 50 Hz or 60 Hz electromagnetic fields might cause adverse psychological effects, such as suicide and depression, may have been limited by inadequate controlling for confounders or inadequate measurement of exposures. We investigated the relationships between magnetic field exposure and psychological and mental health variables while controlling for potential confounders and careful characterising individual magnetic field exposures. Five-hundred-and-forty adults living near transmission lines completed neuropsychological tests in major domains of memory and attentional functioning, mental health rating scales and other questionnaires. Magnetic field measurements were taken in each room occupied for at least one hour per day to provide an estimate of total-time-integrated exposure. The data were subjected to joint multivariate multiple regression analysis to test for a linear relation between field exposure and dependent variables, while controlling for effects of possible confounders. Performance on most memory and attention measures was unrelated to exposure, but significant linear dose-response relationships were found between exposure and some psychological and mental health variables. In particular, higher time-integrated exposure was associated with poorer coding-test performance and more adverse psychiatric symptomatology. These associations were found to be independent of participants' beliefs about effects of electromagnetic fields. Bioelectromagnetics 18:584–594, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This human exposure study examined the relationship between field strength and biological response and tested whether the exposure levels at which the greatest effects occur differ for different endpoints. Three matched groups of 18 men each participated in two 6 h exposure test sessions. All subjects were sham exposed in one session. In the other session, each group of subjects was exposed at a different level of combined electric and magnetic field strength (low group: 6 kV/m, 10 μT; medium group: 9 kV/m, 20 μT; and high group: 12 kV/m, 30 μT). The study was performed double blind, with exposure order counterbalanced. Significant slowing of heart rate, as well as alterations in the latency and amplitude of event-related brain potential measures derived from the electro encephalogram (EEG), occurred in the group exposed to the 9 kV/m, 20 μT combined field (medium group). Exposure at the other field strength levels had no influence on cardiac measures and differential effects on EEG activity. Significant decrements in reaction time and in performance accuracy on a time estimation task were observed only in the low group. These results provide support for the hypothesis that humans may be more responsive to some combinations or levels of field strength than to others and that such differences in responsivity may depend, in part, on the endpoint of interest. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In recent years, with the availability of high resolution models of the human body, numerical computations of induced electric fields and currents have been made in more than one laboratory for various exposure conditions. Despite the verification of computational methods, questions are often asked about the reliability of these data. In this paper, computational results from two laboratories that presented data in compatible formats are compared, supplemented with additional data from the third laboratory. Two exposures to uniform fields at 60 Hz are evaluated. The human body models used in the computations are different and so are the computation al methods and codes. There are some differences in the conductivity values used for some of the tissues, as well. The results of the comparison confirm that these data are reliable, as the overall agreement is reasonably good and the differences can be rationally explained. This comparison also underscores the importance of accurate data on the dielectric properties of tissues.  相似文献

A model has been developed that permits assessment of residential exposure to 60-Hz magnetic fields emitted by appliances. It is based on volume- and time-averaging of magnetic-dipole fields. The model enables the contribution of appliances in the total residential exposure to be compared with that of other sources in any residence under study. Calculations based on measurements reported in the literature on 98 appliances revealed that appliances are not a significant source of whole-body exposure, but that they may be the dominant source of exposure of the body's extremities.  相似文献

This study sought to estimate the relative contribution of exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields experienced at home, at work/school, or elsewhere to the total exposure over 24 hr. Personal exposure meters were carried by 97 adults and children in the Stockholm area. About half of the subjects lived close (<50 m) to a transmission line and half far (>100 m) away. Spot measurements and calculations for the residential exposure were also made. For subjects living<50 m from the line, the exposure at home contributed about 80% of the total magnetic field exposure, measured in mT-hours. Adults living far away experienced only 38% of the total exposure at home, but children still received 55%. Subjects with low time-weighted average (TWA) exposure both at home and at work spent 84% of their time in fields <0.1 microT, and those with high TWA at both locations spent 69% of their time in fields > or = 0.2 microT. This contrast was diluted if only exposure at one location was considered. For spot measurements and calculations of the residential exposure, both sensitivity and specificity was good. However, the intermediate field exposure category (0.1-0.19 microT) showed poor correlation to the 24 hr personal measurements.  相似文献

In previous research, we have found that acute exposure to a 60 Hz magnetic field caused a decrease in cholinergic activity in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of the rat. In the present study, the effects of exposure to different intensities of the magnetic field and durations of exposure were investigated. Rats were exposed to a 60 Hz magnetic field for 60 min at a flux density of either 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 mT. A significant decrease in cholinergic activity was observed in the frontal cortex and hippocampus immediately after exposure to the 2.0 mT field. No significant effect was observed at lower intensities. In another experiment, effect of exposure to a 1.0 mT magnetic field for 30, 45, 60, and 90 min was investigated. A decrease in cholinergic activity was found in both brain areas after 90 min of exposure. No significant effect was observed after shorter durations of exposure. In a further experiment, the exposure duration was extended to 3 h at flux densities of 0.5, 0.1, and 0.05 mT. A significant decrease in cholinergic activity was observed in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of the rat immediately after exposure to all the intensities. It is concluded that the intensity and duration of exposure interact. By increasing the duration of exposure, effects can be observed at lower intensities.  相似文献

Occupational, environmental, or domestic exposure of human beings to extremely low-frequency (50- or 60-Hz) electric and magnetic fields varies continuously over time. In epidemiological studies of possible health effects, exposures over long durations must be aggregated in terms of simple summary indices. However, there are many different, biologically plausible, ways of aggregating the data. While awake, each of 20 electric utility personnel and 16 office workers had provided minute-by-minute measures of incident electric (V/m) and magnetic (muT) fields over a 7-day period via personal dosimeters. Once the measures were aggregated as means, medians, peaks, and other indices, intercorrelations between all index pairs were calculated; correlation matrices are presented for the utility and office workers both by group and when pooled. Product-moment coefficients (r) greater that .80 were found between the time-weighted arithmetic mean (TWA) and indices that explicitly emphasize short but highly intense exposures, such as peak values and time above thresholds. Medians and geometric means were less highly correlated with the TWA. Use of only a few indices, perhaps the TWA alone, may sacrifice but little statistical power in most epidemiological studies of utility workers exposed to ELF fields. However, correlations between electric-field strength and magnetic-field density were generally quite weak, as were correlations of either with high-frequency transients; these findings underscore the need to measure each of these variables in epidemiological studies. Indices of exposure incurred outside the workplace were less strongly correlated, which may indicate the need to use several indices in general-population studies.  相似文献

Recent laboratory and epidemiological results have stimulated interest in the hypothesis that human beings may exhibit biological responses to magnetic and/or electric field transients with frequencies in the range between 100 Hz and 100 kHz. Much can be learned about the response of a system to a transient stimulation by understanding its response to sinusoidal disturbances over the entire frequency range of interest. Thus, the main effort of this paper was to compare the strengths of the electric fields induced in homogeneous ellipsoidal models by uniform 100 Hz through 100 kHz electric and magnetic fields. Over this frequency range, external electric fields of about 25–2000 V/m (depending primarily on the orientation of the body relative to the field) are required to induce electric fields inside models of adults and children that are similar in strength to those induced by an external 1 μT magnetic field. Additional analysis indicates that electric fields induced by uniform external electric and magnetic fields and by the nonuniform electric and magnetic fields produced by idealized point sources will not differ by more than a factor of two until the sources are brought close to the body. Published data on electric and magnetic field transients in residential environments indicate that, for most field orientations, the magnetic component will induce stronger electric fields inside adults and children than the electric component. This conclusion is also true for the currents induced in humans by typical levels of 60 Hz electric and magnetic fields in U.S. residences. The issue of adverse human health effects due to exposure to electromagnetic fields is still unclear, and congenital anomalies are among the outcomes that have been inconsistently associated with such exposure. We conducted a population-based, case-control study to examine the risk of congenital anomalies associated with maternal exposure to magnetic fields (MF) from high-voltage power lines during pregnancy in a community in northern Italy. We identified 228 cases of congenital malformations diagnosed in live births, stillbirths, and induced abortions among women living in the municipality of Reggio Emilia during the period 1998-2006, and a reference group of healthy newborns was matched for year of birth, maternal age, and hospital of birth. We identified maternal residence during early pregnancy and used Geographic Information System to determine whether the residences were within geocoded corridors with MF ≥0.1 μT near high-voltage power lines, then calculated the relative risk (RR) of congenital anomalies associated with maternal exposure. One case and 5 control mothers were classified as exposed, and the RR associated with MF ≥0.1 μT was 0.2 (95% CI: 0.0-2.0) after adjusting for maternal education. While small or moderate effects may have gone undetected due to low statistical power, the results of this study overall do not provide support for major effects of a teratogenic risk due to exposure to MF during early pregnancy.  相似文献

Equipment designed for simultaneous exposure of rodents to 60-Hz electric and magnetic fields is described. Three identical systems were constructed, each capable of continuous exposure of 256 rats or 640 mice to a nominal electric field at less than 50 kV/m, and to horizontal and vertical magnetic fields at less than 1 mT. Design features, construction details, and results of various tests of the systems are described. Tests were made: of phase relations between electric and magnetic fields; of uniformity of electric and magnetic fields; of changes across time in electric-field intensity as a result of animals' soiling of cages and various washing routines; of resistance of bedding material during humid and dry conditions; and of acoustic noise due to background, to field-generation equipment, and to air conditioning equipment. The results demonstrated that fields were effectively generated but that significant and troublesome changes in electric-field intensity occurred because of cage-soiling. However, when cages were frequently cleaned, field intensities were consistent from one exposure to another.  相似文献

The neurophysiologic effects of combined 60-Hz electric (E) and magnetic (B) fields, of magnitudes comparable to those produced by high-voltage powerlines, were investigated in 10 monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). Six animals (experimental group) were each exposed to three different levels of E and B fields: 3 kV/m and 0.1 G, 10 kV/m and 0.3 G, and 30 kV/m and 0.9 G. Field exposures were preceded and followed by sham exposures, during which factors of field generation were present (e.g., heat, vibration, noise, etc.) without E and B fields. Each of the five segments (i.e., the three exposure segments and the initial and final sham exposure segments) lasted 3 weeks. Animals were exposed for 18 h/day (fields on at 1600 h, off at 1000 h). Four other animals (external control group) were given sham exposure for the entire 15-week period. Auditory, visual, and somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded twice a week, during the daily 6-h field-off period. E- and B-field exposure had no effect on the early or mid-latency evoked potential components, suggesting that exposure at these levels has no effect on peripheral or central sensory afferent pathways. However, there was a statistically significant decrease in the amplitudes of late components of the somatosensory evoked potential during the 10kV/m and 0.3 G, and 30 kV/m and 0.9 G exposure levels. This result is possibly related to the opiate antagonist effect of electromagnetic field exposure reported by others.  相似文献

We exposed Macaca nemestrina (pig-tailed macaques) to electric (E) and magnetic (B) fields ranging in intensity from 3 kV/m and 0.1 G to 30 kV/m and 0.9 G for three 21-day (d) periods. Experimental animals were exposed to sham E and B fields for two 21-d periods, one prior to and one following actual exposure to E and B fields, resulting in a total of five 21-d periods. Control animals were exposed to sham E and B fields for the entire 105-d interval. At the end of each 21-d period cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was obtained by lumbar puncture and analyzed for concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), metabolites of dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters, respectively, by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD). Results are based on an examination of six experimental and four control animals. Exposure to E and B fields at all strengths was associated with a significant decline in CSF concentrations of both HVA and 5-HIAA when statistical comparisons were made against values obtained at the end of the preexposure interval. However, HVA returned to preexposure levels during the postexposure period, while 5-HIAA did not. No significant change in the concentrations of HVA or 5-HIAA was noted in the control animals. These results strongly suggest that exposure of the nonhuman primate to E and B fields can significantly affect specific biochemical estimates of nervous system function. These effects may involve alterations either in neuronal activity or in the activity of enzymes that catabolize the neurotransmitters.  相似文献

Several recent studies have reported that whole-body exposure of rodents to power frequency magnetic fields (MFs) can result in DNA single- and double-strand breaks in the brains of these animals. The current study was undertaken to investigate whether an acute 2h exposure of a 1 mT, 60 Hz MF could elicit DNA damage, and subsequently apoptosis, in the brains of immature (10-day-old) mice. DNA damage was quantitated at 0, 2, 4, and 24h after exposure using the alkaline comet assay. Apoptosis was quantitated in the external granule cell layer (EGCL) of the immature mouse cerebellum at 0 and 24h after exposure to MF by the TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Four parameters (tail ratio, tail moment, comet length and tail length) were used to assess DNA damage for each comet. While increased DNA damage was detected by tail ratio at 2h after MF exposure, no supporting evidence of increased DNA damage was detected by the other parameters. In addition, no similar differences were observed using these parameters at any of the other post-exposure times. No increase in apoptosis was observed in the EGCL of MF-exposed mice, when compared to sham mice. Taken together, these results do not support the hypothesis that acute MF exposure causes DNA damage in the cerebellums of immature mice.  相似文献

To investigate the potential of magnetic fields to act as a behavioral teratogen, pregnant CD1 mice were exposed or sham-exposed for all of gestation to a 50 Hz/20 mT magnetic field. Maturation of offspring was assessed using a range of standard developmental indices (eye opening, pinna detachment, hair coat, tooth eruption, sexual maturity, and weight) and simple reflexive behaviors (air righting, surface righting, forepaw grasp, cliff avoidance, and negative geotaxis). Activity and coordination levels were explored in juvenile and adult mice using an open field arena, a head-dip board, an accelerating Rotarod, and a residential activity wheel. All assessments were carried out without knowledge of exposure condition. Results from 168 sham-exposed mice from 21 litters and from 184 exposed mice from 23 litters were compared using survival analysis techniques and multivariate regression methods. Three possible field-dependent effects were found: Exposed animals performed the air righting reflex earlier (P < 0.01); exposed males (but not females) were significantly lighter in weight (P = 0.008) at 30 days of age; and exposed animals remained on a Rota-rod for less time as juveniles (P = 0.03). Some of these results have not been reported in other studies and may reflect spurious statistical significance, although some effect of magnetic field exposure cannot be ruled out. Overall, these results suggest that prenatal exposure to a 50 Hz magnetic field does not engender any gross impairments in the postnatal development or behavior of mice. This does not preclude such exposure affecting more subtle aspects of behavior. Published 1994 by Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study investigates the individual magnetic field exposures at 16 2/3 and 50 Hz of 1952 people, selected from the Bavarian population. Personal flux density meters ("Field Watcher FW2A") were worn by the participants for 24 h. Every second, the flux density was recorded for both frequencies and for the three spatial axes (dynamic range per axis: several nT up to 100 microT at 50 Hz, 150 microT at 16 2/3 Hz). For 50 Hz fields, the mean of the 1,952 individual means was 0.101 microT and that of the individual medians was 0.047 microT. High level exposures occurred mainly during working hours. Only 2.4% of the subjects showed individual medians higher than 0.2 microT. About 53% of all volunteers were working on the day of recording. Levels for craftsmen (n = 148; mean individual mean: 0.166 microT) were generally higher than those for office workers (n = 624; mean individual mean: 0.107 microT). Flux densities exceeding 100 microT at 50 Hz were measured in 31 persons. The total time with such extreme exposures amounts to nearly 21 min, less than 0.001% of the total time for all measurements (5.3 years). To our knowledge, this is the first exposure study where 16 2/3 Hz magnetic fields (caused by electrified railways) have additionally been monitored over 24 h. For persons living next to railway lines, the mean individual mean (0.156 microT) and mean individual median (0.102 microT) were calculated. Over all, the mean exposures are only 0.1% of the magnetic flux density limit for 50 Hz (100 microT) and about 0.05% of the limit (300 microT) for 16 2/3 Hz recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.  相似文献

Pregnant CD1 mice were exposed or sham-exposed from day 0 to day 17 of gestation to a 50 Hz sinusoidal magnetic field at 20 mT (rms). Preimplantation and postimplantation survival were assessed and fetuses examined for the presence of gross external, internal, and skeletal abnormalities. There were no statistically significant field-dependent effects on preimplantation or postimplantation survival, sex ratio, or the incidence of fetuses with internal or skeletal abnormalities. Magnetic field exposure was, however, associated with longer and heavier fetuses at term, with fewer external abnormalities. The results lend no support to suggestions of increased rates of spontaneous abortion or congenital malformation following prenatal exposure to power frequency magnetic fields. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Two separate, independent experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of 60 Hz linearly polarized, sinusoidal, continuous-wave magnetic fields (MFs) on immune system performances in rats born and raised under these fields. Each experiment lasted for 6 weeks. A total of 96 animals, divided into groups of eight animals each, was exposed for 20 h/day to MFs of different intensities, i.e., sham (<0.02 μT) and 2, 20, 200, and 2000 μT. Another group of animals, which was housed in a separate room, served as cage controls (CC). These animals were exposed to ambient MFs of <0.02 μT. The following immune responses were evaluated in both experiments: total T and B cells; CD4+ and CD8+ subpopulation and natural killer (NK) cell activity in splenic lymphocytes; hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrous oxide (NO), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production by peritoneal macrophages. Our results show that a 6 week exposure to MFs induced a significant decrease in the number of CD5+, CD4+, and CD8+ populations. These changes were even more significant in rats that were exposed to fields of 2000 μT. A lower, although significant, decrease in the CD5+ population was also observed in animals that were exposed to fields of 200 μT. Linear regression analysis demonstrated a dose effect with MF intensity. B lymphocyte (Ig+ cell) populations also showed a 12% decrease (P < .05) in the groups that were exposed to fields of 20 and 200 μT. However, these results were not significant, and no relation with MF intensities could be demonstrated. In contrast, evaluation of splenic NK cell activity revealed a 50% increase (P < .05) in animals that were exposed to fields of 2000 μT. No significant results were obtained from the evaluation of TNF activity and NO secretion in peritoneal macrophages. Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated and net H2O2 productions for a minor subpopulation of peritoneal cells showed positive dose-response correlations by linear regression analysis. Taken together, our results suggest that an in vivo exposure of rats for 6 weeks to 60 Hz MFs can induce significant immunological perturbations on effector cells of both natural and adaptive immunity in a dose-dependent fashion. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
