In a group of 20 elite female handball or volleyball players, an evaluation was made of the response to a 4-month training period of cortisol, androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone in the saliva. At the beginning of the training programme (W1) and at the 7th (W7) and 16th weeks (W16), hormone concentrations were measured on awakening (8 a.m.; resting samples), and also before (t 0) and at the end (t 120) of a 2-h exercise session (simulated match) which took place at 6 p.m. The training programme increased the concentrations of adrenal androgens in the saliva at rest (P<0.05) for both groups of subjects, with no change being noted in cortisol concentrations. In contrast, amongst the volleyball players, stressful stimuli produced by an increase in the amount of training did not affect adrenocortical metabolism during exercise. Indeed, a simulated volleyball match resulted in a decrease in salivary cortisol (P<0.05) and androgen concentrations (P<0.05) without regard for the week chosen for the test investigations. In contrast, a simulated handball match caused an increase in cortisol concentrations at W1 only (P<0.05), with no change in the adrenal androgens concentration in any week of the training programme. The regulators of these hormones during a period of exercise and during the course of a training programme would seem to be different. Accepted: 30 October 1997  相似文献

Eight male endurance runners [mean ± (SD): age 25 (6) years; height 1.79 (0.06) m; body mass 70.5 (6.0) kg; % body fat 12.5 (3.2); maximal oxygen consumption (O2max 62.9 (1.7) ml · kg−1 · min−1] performed an interval training session, preceded immediately by test 1, followed after 1 h by test 2, and after 72 h by test 3. The training session was six 800-m intervals at 1 km · h−1 below the velocity achieved at O2max with 3 min of recovery between each interval. Tests 1, 2 and 3 were identical, and included collection of expired gas, measurement of ventilatory frequency (f v ), heart rate (f c), rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood lactate concentration ([La]B) during the final 5 min of 15 min of running at 50% of the velocity achieved at O2max (50% −O2max).␣Oxygen uptake (O2), ventilation ( E ), and respiratory exchange ratio (R) were subsequently determined from duplicate expired gas collections. Body mass and plasma volume changes were measured preceding and immediately following the training session, and before tests 1–3. Subjects ingested water immediately following the training session, the volume of which was determined from the loss of body mass during the session. Repeated measures analysis of variance with multiple comparison (Tukey) was used to test differences between results. No significant differences in body mass or plasma volume existed between the three test stages, indicating that the differences recorded for the measured parameters could not be attributed to changes in body mass or plasma volume between tests, and that rehydration after the interval training session was successful. A significant (P < 0.05) increase was found from test 1 to test 2 [mean (SD)] for O2 [2.128 (0.147) to 2.200 (0.140) 1 · min−1], f c [125 (17) to 132 (16) beats · min−1], and RPE [9 (2) to 11 (2)]. A significant (P < 0.05) decrease was found for submaximal R [0.89 (0.03) to 0.85 (0.04)]. These results suggest that alterations in O2 during moderate-intensity, constant-velocity running do occur following heavy-intensity endurance running training, and that this is due to factors in addition to changed substrate metabolism towards greater fat utilisation, which could explain only 31% of the increase in O2. In the present study, experiments were designed to investigate if supplementation with calcium during 4 weeks had an effect on blood parameters in sedentary male athletes at rest and exhaustion. Thirty healthy subjects of ages ranging from 18 to 22 years were included in the study. The subjects were separated into three groups, as follows: Group 1 consisted sedentary athletes receiving 35 mg/kg/day calcium gluconate. Group 2 included subjects equally supplemented with calcium training 90 min/day for 5 days/week. Group 3 were subject to the same exercise regime but did not receive calcium supplements. Blood parameters were determined in the experimental subjects at rest and after exhaustion. The leukocyte count (WBC) of athletes in groups 2 and 3 were significantly higher at exhaustion (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the WBC of the two supplemented groups. The erythrocyte count (RBC) was increased in the supplemented athletes after training (p < 0.05), but hemoglobin, hematocrit, and trombocyte levels remained unchanged. The mean corpuscular volume increased in the calcium-supplemented group at rest (p < 0.05). These results suggest that calcium supplementation only causes increases in white and red blood cell counts in athletes after exhaustion while other hematological parameters remain unchanged.  相似文献

We characterized the effect of ten days of training on lipid metabolism in 6 [age 37.2 (2.3) years] sedentary, obese [BMI 34.4 (3.0) kg · m−2] males with normal glucose tolerance. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed prior to and at the end of the 10 d of training period. The duration of each daily exercise session was 40 min at an intensity equivalent to ˜75% of the age predicted maximum heart rate. Blood measurements were performed after an overnight fast, before and at the end of the 10 d period. Plasma triacylglycerol was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced following exercise training (2.15 ± 0.29 vs. 1.55 ± 0.28 mmol · l−1). Very low density lipoprotein-triacylglycerol was also significantly (p < 0.05) reduced (1.82 ± 0.3 vs. 1.29 ± 0.29 mmol · l−1). No significant changes in high density lipoprotein-cholesterol were observed as a result of training. Following training fasting plasma glucose and fasting plasma insulin were significantly reduced [Glucose: 5.9 (0.2) mmol · l−1 vs. 5.3 (0.22) mmol · l−1 (p < 0.05); Insulin 264.3 (53.8) ρ · mol · l−1 vs. 200.9 (30.1) ρ · mol · l−1, p = 0.05]. The total area under the glucose curve during the OGTT decreased significantly (p < 0.05). These preliminary data suggest that short-term exercise, without concomitant loss of body mass, induces favorable changes in plasma triacylglycerol, and very low density lipoprotein-triacylglycerol and glucose tolerance but has no effect on high density lipoproteincholesterol. Exercise-induced hypoxaemia (EIH) in master athletes may be related to a diminished exercise hyper- pnoea. The aim of this study was to determine whether EIH is associated with a change in the sensitivity of the ventilation response to activation of the central chemoreceptors. The ventilation response to CO2 was measured in nine elderly untrained men (UT) [mean age 66.3 (SEM 3.1) years] and nine master athletes (MA) [mean age 62.7 (SEM 0.8) years] at rest, during moderate exercise (40% maximal oxygen uptake, O2max), and during strenuous exercise (70% O2max) using the rebreathing method. Our results showed that the ventilation response to CO2 did not differ with endurance training and/or exercise, that the threshold of the CO2 response (Th) increased with exercise (P < 0.001), that the increase in Th in MA was higher than in UT between rest and moderate exercise [ΔTh0–40: 8.55 (SEM 1.8) vs 3.06 (SEM 1.72) mmHg, P < 0.05], and that ΔTh0–40 and Th during moderate exercise were negatively correlated with arterial O2 saturation during maximal exercise (r = 0.50, P<0.05). We concluded therefore that exercise-induced hypoxaemia in master athletes may not be due to a lower ventilation response to CO2, but may be partly related to a greater increase in Th during moderate exercise. The effects of magnesium supplementation on plasma magnesium, zinc, and copper levels were determined in young adult tae-kwon-do athletes and sedentary controls at rest and exhaustion. After a 4-week supplementation period with 10 mg/day/kg Mg, the plasma magnesium, copper, and zinc levels significantly increased in sedentary and training (90–120 min training 5 days a week) subjects when compared to nonsupplemented controls (p < 0.05).  相似文献

The thermoregulatory responses of ten paraplegic (PA; T3/4-L4) and nine able-bodied (AB) upper body trained athletes were examined at rest and during prolonged arm-cranking exercise and passive recovery. Exercise was performed for 90 min at 80% peak heart rate, and at 21.5 (1.7)°C and 47.0 (7.8)% relative humidity on a Monark cycle ergometer (Ergomedic 814E) adapted for arm exercise. Mean peak oxygen uptake values for the PA and AB athlete groups were 2.12 (0.41) min−1 and 3.19 (0.38) l · min−1, respectively (P<0.05). At rest, there was no difference in aural temperature between groups [36.2 (0.4)°C for both groups]. However, upper body skin temperatures for the PA athletes were approximately 1.0 °C warmer than for the AB athletes, whereas lower body skin temperatures were cooler than those for the AB athletes (1.3 °C and 2.7 °C for the thigh and calf, respectively). Upper and lower body skin temperatures for the AB athletes were similar. During exercise, blood lactate peaked after 15 min of exercise for both groups [3.33 (1.26) mmol · l−1 and 4.30 (1.03) mmol · l−1 for the PA and AB athletes, respectively, P<0.05] and decreased throughout the remainder of the exercise period. Aural temperature increased by 0.7 (0.5)°C and 0.6 (0.4)°C for the AB and PA athletes, respectively. Calf skin temperature for the PA athletes increased during exercise by 1.4 (2.8)°C (P<0.05), whereas a decrease of 0.8 (2.0)°C (P<0.05) was observed for the AB athletes. During the first 20 min of recovery from exercise, the calf skin temperature of the AB athletes decreased further [−2.6 (1.3)°C; P<0.05]. Weight losses and changes in plasma volume were similar for both groups [0.7 (0.5) kg and 0.7 (0.4) kg; 5.4 (4.9)% and 9.7 (6.2)% for the PA and AB athletes, respectively]. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the PA athletes exhibit different thermoregulatory responses at rest and during exercise and passive recovery to those of upper body trained AB athletes. Despite this, during 90 min of arm-crank exercise in a cool environment, the PA athletes appeared to be at no greater thermal risk than the AB athletes. Accepted: 7 May 1997  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine the separate and combined effects of a short-term aerobic training program and hypohydration on tolerance during light exercise while wearing nuclear, biological, and chemical protective clothing in the heat (40°C, 30% relative humidity). Males of moderate fitness [<50 ml · kg−1 · min−1 maximal O2 consumption (O2 max )] were tested while euhydrated or hypohydrated by ≈2% of body weight through exercise and fluid restriction the day preceding the trials. Tests were conducted before and after either a 2-week program of daily aerobic training (1 h treadmill exercise at 65% O2 max for 12 days; n = 8) or a control period (n = 7), which had no effect on any measured variable. The training increased O2 max by 6.5%, while heart rate (f c) and the rectal temperature (T re) rise decreased during exercise in a thermoneutral environment. In the heat, training resulted in a decreased skin temperature and increased sweat rate, but did not affect f c, T re or tolerance time (TT). In both training and control groups, hypohydration significantly increased T re and f c and decreased the TT. It was concluded that the short-term aerobic training program had no benefit on exercise-heat tolerance in this uncompensable heat stress environment. Accepted: 12 November 1997  相似文献

In contrast to endurance training, little research has been carried out to investigate the effects of short (<10 s) sprint training on performance, muscle metabolism and fibre types. Nine fit male subjects performed a mean of 16 outdoor sprint running training sessions over 6 weeks. Distances sprinted were 30–80 m at 90–100% maximum speed and between 20 and 40 sprints were performed in each session. Endurance (maximal oxygen consumption; V˙O2 max), sprint (10 m and 40 m times), sustained sprint (supramaximal treadmill run) and repeated sprint (6 × 40 m sprints, 24 s recovery between each) performance tests were performed before and after training. Muscle biopsy samples (vastus lateralis) were also taken to examine changes in metabolites, enzyme activities and fibre types. After training, significant improvements were seen in 40 m time (P < 0.01), supramaximal treadmill run time (P < 0.05), repeated sprint performance (P < 0.05) and V˙O2 max (P < 0.01). Resting muscle concentrations of ATP and phosphocreatine did not change. Phosphorylase activity increased (P < 0.025), citrate synthase activity decreased (P < 0.01), but no significant changes were recorded in myokinase and phosphofructokinase activities. The proportion of type II muscle fibres increased significantly (P < 0.05). These results demonstrate that 6 weeks of short sprint training can improve endurance, sprint and repeated sprint ability in fit subjects. Increases in the proportion of type II muscle fibres are also possible with this type of training. Accepted: 5 January 1998  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the response of adrenocorticotropin ([ACTH]) and growth hormone ([GH]) concentrations to a typical aerobic swimming set during a training season. Nine top-level male endurance swimmers (age range 17–23 years) were tested during three training sessions occurring 6, 12 and 18 weeks after the beginning of the season. During each session, after a standard warm-up, the swimmers performed a training set of 15 × 200-m freestyle, with 20 s of rest between repetitions, at a predetermined individual speed. Blood samples were collected before warm-up and at the end of the training set. A few days before each session, the individual swimming velocity corresponding to the 4 mmol · l−1 blood lactate concentration (v 4) was assessed as a standard of aerobic performance. Aerobic training affected v 4 levels, which were highest 18 weeks after the beginning of the season; at the same time, while [ACTH] response was attenuated, [GH] response was enhanced. These results could be considered as adaptations to the exercise intensity. In our training programme, these adaptations seemed to have occurred between the 12th and 18th weeks of the training season. Accepted: 21 April 1998  相似文献

The effects of a 1-month exercise program and magnesium supplementation on the adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol levels were studied in young tae-kwon-do and sedentary subjects both at rest and exhaustion. The hormone levels were compared before and after supplementation with 10 mg of magnesium (as magnesium sulfate) per kilogram of body weight. Both exercise and magnesium supplements caused significant increases of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (p < 0.05). The cortisol levels were increased in training subjects receiving supplements (p < 0.05) but not so in subjects that either trained or received magnesium supplements in an independent manner. The cortisol levels measured in resting individuals were higher in the supplemented and non-supplemented athletes than those in sedentary subjects (p < 0.05). The results of this study show that exercise and/or magnesium supplementation causes a rise of the adrenocorticotropic hormone, whereas cortisol is increased only as a result of combined exhaustion and magnesium supplements.  相似文献

Five women using low-dose, monophasic oral contraceptive (OC) agents (OC group) and ten normally menstruating women (Non-OC group) performed a treadmill protocol to determine the effect of OCs and the menstrual cycle (MC) on intermittent exercise performance and some commonly used metabolic markers. The Non-OC group were tested once in the mid-follicular phase (MFP) and once in the late luteal phase (LLP) of the MC, while the OC group performed their first test within 1 week of taking the OC (T1) and their second test 1 week later (T2). Despite performance time being the same in both groups [mean (SD), Non-OC group: 77.7 (14.9) s versus OC group: 77.7 (21.1)s], plasma ammonia concentration ([NH3]pl) was higher in the Non-OC group when compared to the OC group throughout recovery (P < 0.05). No differences were found in blood lactate (BLa), maximum heart rate or aural temperature (T au) between groups. Within the Non-OC group T au increased with exercise in both phases (P < 0.05), however T au was higher in the LLP at rest [36.1 (0.3)°C) and 1 min post-exercise [37.1 (0.6)°C), when compared to the MFP [35.8 (0.3) and 36.9 (0.7)°C, rest and 1 min post-exercise respectively, P < 0.05]. Within the OC group T1 resulted in a higher peak BLa [11.2 (0.4) mmol/l] and [NH3]pl (143.0 (26.2) Umol/l] when compared to T2 [BLa, 9.6 (0.9); [NH3], 119.4 (48.1), P<0.05]. These results suggest that: (1) exercise performance does not vary between the MFP and the LLP of the MC, nor does it appear to be affected by the number of days using the OC, and (2) an altered metabolism occurs both between groups (Non-OC versus OC) and within the OC group.  Sunflower genotypes with increased levels of palmitic acid (C16 : 0) in the seed oil could be useful for food and industrial applications. The objective of the present study was to determine the inheritance of the high C16 : 0 content in the sunflower mutant line CAS-5 (>25% of the total oil fatty acids). This mutant was reciprocally crossed with the lines HA-89 (5.7% C16 : 0) and BSD-2-691 (5.4% C16 : 0), the latter being the parental line from which CAS-5 was isolated. No maternal effect for the C16 : 0 content was observed from the analysis of F1 seeds in any of the crosses. The inheritance study of the C16 : 0 content in F1, F2 and BC1F1 seeds from the crosses of CAS-5 with its parental line BSD-2-691 indicated that the segregation fitted a model of two alleles at one locus with partial dominance for the low content. The analysis of the fatty acid composition in the F2 populations from the crosses with HA-89 revealed a segregation fitting a ratio 19 : 38 : 7 for low (<7.5%), middle (7.5–15%), and high (>25%) C16 : 0 content, respectively. This segregation was explained on the basis of three loci (P1, P2, P3) each having two alleles showing partial dominance for low content. The genotypes with a high C16 : 0 content were homozygous for the recessive allele p1 and for at least one of the other two recessive alleles, p2 or p3. This model was further confirmed with the analysis of the F3 and the BC1F1 generations. It was concluded that both the recessive alleles p2 and p3 were already present in the BSD-2-691 line, the allele p1 being the result of a mutation from P1. This genetic study will facilitate breeding strategies associated with the incorporation of the high C16 : 0 trait into agronomically acceptable sunflower hybrids. This study examined hypertrophy after head extension resistance training to assess which muscles of the complicated cervical neuromuscular system were used in this activity. We also determined if conventional resistance exercises, which are likely to evoke isometric action of the neck, induce generalized hypertrophy of the cervical muscle. Twenty-two active college students were studied. [mean (SE) age, weight and height: 21 (1) years, 71 (4) kg and 173 (3) cm, respectively]. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups: RESX (head extension exercise and other resistance exercises), RES (resistance exercises without specific neck exercise), or CON (no training). Groups RESX (n = 8) and RES (n = 6) trained 3 days/week for 12 weeks with large-muscle mass exercises (squat, deadlift, push press, bent row and mid-thigh pull). Group RESX also performed three sets of ten repetitions of a head extension exercise 3 days/week with a load equal to the 3 × 10 repetition maximum (RM). Group CON (n = 8) was a control group. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of nine individual muscles or muscle groups was determined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical region. The CSA data were averaged over four contiguous transaxial slices in which all muscles of interest were visible. The 3 × 10 RM for the head extension exercise increased for RESX after training [from 17.9 (1.0) to 23.9 (1.4) kg, P < 0.05] but not for RES [from 17.6 (1.4) to 17.7 (1.9)␣kg] or CON [from 10.1 (2.2) to 10.3 (2.1) kg]. RESX showed an increase in total neck muscle CSA after training [from 19.5 (3.0) to 22.0 (3.6) cm2, P < 0.05], but RES and CON did not [from 19.6 (2.9) to 19.7 (2.9)␣cm2 and 17.0 (2.5) to 17.0 (2.4) cm2, respectively]. This hypertrophy for RESX was due mainly to increases in CSA of 23.9 (3.2), 24.0 (5.8), and 24.9 (5.3)% for the splenius capitis, and semispinalis capitis and cervicis muscles, respectively. The lack of generalized neck muscle hypertrophy in RES was not due to insufficient training. For example, the CSA of their quadriceps femoris muscle group, as assessed by MRI, increased by 7 (1)% after this short-term training (P < 0.05). The results suggest that: (1) the splenius capitis, and semispinalis capitis and cervicis muscles are mainly responsible for head extension; (2) short-term resistance training does not provide a sufficient stimulus to evoke neck muscle hypertrophy unless specific neck exercises are performed; and (3) the postural role of head extensors provides modest loading in bipeds. The present study was performed to investigate the effects of strenuous exercise and calcium supplementation on cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone levels in athletes at rest and exhaustion. Thirty male athletes, ages 17–21 years, were enrolled in the 4-week study. They were divided into three groups as follows: group 1 (n = 10): training without supplementation; group 2 (n = 10): training and calcium supplemented, and group 3 (n = 10): calcium supplemented without training. Venous blood samples were obtained for determination of the hormones. One-month supplementation with calcium does not influence the cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone in athletes, but strenuous exercise results in a significant increase in their levels with or without supplementation (p < 0.05).  相似文献

The influence of artificially induced anaemia on thermal strain was evaluated in trained males. Heat stress trials (38.6°C, water vapour pressure 2.74 kPa) performed at the same absolute work rates [20 min of seated rest, 20 min of cycling at 30% peak aerobic power (O2peak), and 20 min cycling at 45% O2peak] were completed before (HST1) and 3–5 days after 3 units of whole blood were withdrawn (HST2). Mild anaemia did not elevate thermal strain between trials, with auditory canal temperatures terminating at 38.5°C [(0.16), HST1] and 38.6°C [(0.13), HST2; P > 0.05]. Given that blood withdrawal reduced aerobic power by 16%, this observation deviates from the close association often observed between core temperature and relative exercise intensity. During HST2, the absolute and integrated forearm sweat rate ( sw) exceeded control levels during exercise (P < 0.05), while a suppression of forehead sw occurred (P < 0.05). These observations are consistent with a possible peripheral redistribution of sweat secretion. It was concluded that this level of artificially induced anaemia did not impact upon heat strain during a 60-min heat stress test. Accepted: 17 April 1997  相似文献

This study was performed to determine how the calcium supplementation for a 4-week period affects the glucose and insulin levels at rest and at exhaustion in athletes. This is a 4-week study performed on 30 healthy subjects varying between 18 and 22 ages. Subjects were separated into three groups: first group (group supplemented with calcium, sedentary group), second group (calcium supplementations + exercise group), and third group (training group). Glucose and insulin parameters of the groups were measured four times, at rest and exhaustion in the beginning of the research and at rest and exhaustion after the end of 4 weeks application period. Exhaustion measurements both before and after the supplementations significantly decreased in compared to rest measurements in terms of insulin (p < 0.05). Significant difference was not determined in the glucose values of groups. In terms of glucose, values increased in all of the three groups occurred with exercise both before and after the supplementation by exercise and exhaustion (p < 0.05). The results of our study indicate that calcium gluconate supplementations for 4 weeks in sedentary subjects and athletes did not significantly affect plasma insulin levels at rest and exhaustion. However, glucose levels were affected by calcium supplementation and exhausting exercise in athletes.  相似文献

This study assessed clinical and cardiorespiratory responses after an interval training programme in sedentary elderly adults using the ventilatory threshold (V th) as the index of exercise training intensity. A selection of 22 subjects were randomized into two groups: 11 subjects served as the training group (TG) and the others as controls (CG). Maximal exercise tests were performed on a treadmill before (T0), each month (T1, T2) and after the 3-month interval training programme period (T3). The TG subjects were individually trained at the heart rate corresponding to V th measured at T0, T1 and T2 as the breakpoint in the oxygen uptake-carbon dioxide production relationship. Their training programme consisted of walking/jogging sessions on a running track twice a week. The sessions consisted of varying durations of exercise alternating with active recovery in such a way that the subjects slowly increased their total exercise time from an initial duration of 30 min to a final duration of 1 h. During training the heart rate was continuously monitored by a cardiofrequency meter. Compared with the daily activities of the controls, no training programme-related injuries were observed in TG. Moreover, programme adherence (73%) and attendance (97.3%) were high. The maximal oxygen uptake and V th were increased in TG, by 20% (P<0.05) and 26% (P<0.01), respectively. Interval training at V th also significantly increased maximal O2 pulse (P<0.05) and maximal ventilation (P<0.01). A significant decrease in submaximal ventilation (P<0.05) and heart rate (P<0.01) was also noted. These results would suggest that for untrained elderly adults, an interval training programme at the intensity of V th may be well-tolerated clinically and may significantly improve both maximal aerobic power and submaximal exercise tolerance. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform expression of the triceps brachii muscle and isoinertial, isometric and isokinetic strength indices in competitive bodybuilders (CB, n = 5), recreational resistance trainers (RT, n = 5), endurance-trained rowers (ER, n = 5) and control (C, n = 5) subjects. Muscle tissue samples were analysed for MHC isoform content using 6% sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The CB possessed significantly smaller (P < 0.05) percentage of MHC type IIb proteins [12.92 (SD 7.08)%] than RT [30.08 (SD 6.58)%] ER [31.20 (SD 2.74)%] and C [38.22 (SD 2.95)%] groups (i.e. CB < RT ≈ ER < C). While the content of MHC type IIa isoforms did not differ significantly between the two resistance-trained groups [CB = 55.76 (SD 5.38)%; RT = 45.72 (SD 7.8)%], CB presented significantly more type IIa MHC isoforms than ER [42.84 (SD 2.98)%] and C [34.72 (SD 1.57)%] subjects (i.e. CB ≈ RT > ER ≈ C). The MHC type I protein content did not differ significantly among RT [24.20 (SD 4.89)%] ER [25.38 (SD 1.67)%] and C [27.06 (SD 1.81)%] groups. The CB [31.32 (SD 2.67)%] presented significantly more type I MHC isoforms only in comparison with RT. However, when changes in the percentage of MHC type I isoforms were converted to effect sizes (ES), it appeared that low statistical power rather than the absence of an effect accounted for the nonsignificant differences between CB and other groups (i.e. CB > RT ≈ ER ≈ C). Significant differences existed in isoinertial strength among the trained athletes (i.e. CB > RT > ER ≈ C), while isometric and isokinetic strength were not significantly different among any of the trained groups. However, the ES transformation of data demonstrated that large differences existed between resistance-trained groups and ER for isometric and isokinetic strength (i.e. CB ≈ RT > ER ≈ C). A statistically significant negative correlation (P < 0.001) was found between MHC type IIb isoforms and isoinertial strength index (r = − 0.68). The MHC type IIa proteins were positively related to all the strength measures considered (r = 0.51 – 0.61; P < 0.001). These data demonstrated different patterns of MHC isoform expression among the different groups of athletes and it is suggested that these differences on occasion may affect the expression of strength. Maize (Zea mays L.) cell cultures incorporated radioactivity from [14C]cinnamate into hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA derivatives and then into polysaccharide-bound feruloyl residues. Within 5–20 min, the CoA pool had lost its 14C by turnover and little or no further incorporation into polysaccharides then occurred. The system was thus effectively a pulse–chase experiment. Kinetics of radiolabelling of diferulates (also known as dehydrodiferulates) varied with culture age. In young (1–3 d) cultures, polysaccharide-bound [14C]feruloyl- and [14C]diferuloyl residues were both detectable within 1 min of [14C]cinnamate feeding. Thus, feruloyl residues were dimerised <1 min after their attachment to polysaccharides. For at least the first 2.3 h after [14C]cinnamate feeding, polysaccharide-bound [14C]diferuloyl residues remained almost constant at ≈7% of the total polysaccharide-bound [14C]ferulate derivatives. Since feruloyl residues are attached to polysaccharides <1 min after the biosynthesis of the latter, and >10 min before secretion, the data show that extensive feruloyl coupling occurred intra-protoplasmically. Exogenous H2O2 (1 mM) caused little additional feruloyl coupling; therefore, wall-localised coupling may have been peroxidase-limited. In older (e.g. 4 d) cultures, less intraprotoplasmic coupling occurred: during the first 2.5 h, polysaccharide-bound [14C]diferuloyl residues were a steady 1.4% of the total polysaccharide-bound [14C]ferulate derivatives. In contrast to the situation in younger cultures, exogenous H2O2 induced a rapid 4- to 6-fold increase in all coupling products, indicating that coupling in the walls was H2O2-limited. In both 2- and 4-d-old cultures, polysaccharide-bound 14C-trimers and larger coupling products exceeded [14C]diferulates 3- to 4-fold, but followed similar kinetics. Thus, although all known dimers of ferulate can now be individually quantified, it appears to be trimers and larger products that make the major contribution to cross-linking of wall polysaccharides in cultured maize cells. We argue that feruloyl arabinoxylans that are cross-linked before and after secretion are likely to loosen and tighten the cell wall, respectively. The consequences for the control of cell expansion and for the response of cell walls to an oxidative burst are discussed. Received: 19 January 2000 / Accepted: 13 April 2000  相似文献
