Based on morphological traits, hippos have traditionally been classified with pigs and peccaries in the suborder Suiformes. However, molecular data indicate that hippos and cetaceans are sister taxa. This study analyses muscle characters of the common hippo hind limb in order to clarify the phylogenetic relationships and functional anatomy of hippos. Several muscles responsible for propelling the body through water are robust and display extensive fusions, including mm. semimembranosus, semitendinosus, biceps femoris and gluteus superficialis. In addition, common hippos retain long flexor and extensor tendons for each digit, reflecting the fact that all four toes are weight‐bearing. These flexor tendons, together with the well‐developed intrinsic muscles of the pes, serve to adduct the digits, preventing splaying of the toes when walking on soft terrain. Lastly, common hippos retain a number of primitive features, including the presence of m. articularis coxae, a well‐developed m. obturator internus, superficialis and profundus tendons to all digits, mm. flexor digitorum brevis, abductor digiti V, lumbricalis IV, adductores digitorum II and V, and two mm. interossei per digit. Pygmy hippos share these features. Thus, hippopotamids retain muscles that have been lost in the majority of artiodactyls, including other suiforms. We investigated finger joint coordination during tapping by characterizing joint kinematics and torques in terms of muscle activation patterns and energy profiles. Six subjects tapped with their index finger on a computer keyswitch as if they were typing on the middle row of a keyboard. Fingertip force, keyswitch position, kinematics of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and the proximal and distal interphalangeal (IP) joints, and intramuscular electromyography of intrinsic and extrinsic finger muscles were measured simultaneously. Finger joint torques were calculated based on a closed-form Newton–Euler inverse dynamic model of the finger. During the keystroke, the MCP joint flexed and the IP joints extended before and throughout the loading phase of the contact period, creating a closing reciprocal motion of the finger joints. As the finger lifted, the MCP joint extended and the interphalangeal (IP) joints flexed, creating an opening reciprocal motion. Intrinsic finger muscle and extrinsic flexor activities both began after the initiation of the downward finger movement. The intrinsic finger muscle activity preceded both the IP joint extension and the onset of extrinsic muscle activity. Only extrinsic extensor activity was present as the finger was lifted. While both potential energy and kinetic energy are present and large enough to overcome the work necessary to press the keyswitch, the motor control strategies utilize the muscle forces and joint torques to ensure a successful keystroke.  相似文献

The intrinsic and extrinsic muscles are considered to stabilize the foot and contribute to propulsion during walking. This study aimed to clarify the functional relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles during walking. Thirteen healthy men participated in this study. The muscle activities of the intrinsic muscles (quadratus plantae and abductor hallucis), and the extrinsic muscles (flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus, and tibialis posterior) were measured using fine-wire and surface electromyography during walking. The muscle onset timing after foot contact was calculated and compared among muscles using the one-way ANOVA. The stance phase was divided into early and late braking, and early and late propulsion phases. Muscle activity among phases was compared using repeated-measures ANOVA. The onset time of the abductor hallucis was significantly earlier than those of the flexor digitorum longus and tibialis posterior. The quadratus plantae demonstrated significantly earlier onset than that of the tibialis posterior. In the late propulsion phase, the activity of extrinsic muscles decreased, whereas intrinsic muscles were continuously active. Early activation of the intrinsic muscles may stabilize the foot for efficient torque production by the extrinsic muscles. Furthermore, the intrinsic muscles may contribute to the final push-off after the deactivation of extrinsic muscles.  相似文献

Forearm compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that usually requires release of the superficial muscle compartments. In some clinical situations it is imperative to also explore the deep muscle compartments. There are no anatomical guides for surgical exploration of the deep compartments that would minimize collateral damage to surrounding vessels, nerves, and muscles. Surgical injury in the setting of ischemia, especially vascular injury, compounds the tissue damage that has already occurred. The authors evaluated four surgical approaches (three volar and one dorsal) to the deep forearm by performing detailed anatomical dissections on 10 embalmed and plastinated cadavers. They used a scoring system to rate the approaches for their ability to visualize the deep space without causing iatrogenic injury to superficial muscles, arteries, and nerves. In the volar forearm, an ulnar approach to the deep space is simple, causes the least iatrogenic surgical injury, and provides access to the deep volar forearm structures. The plane of dissection is between the flexor carpi ulnaris and the flexor digitorum superficialis. Dividing one or two distal segmental branches of the ulnar artery to the distal flexor digitorum superficialis exposes the pronator quadratus. Lifting the ulnar neurovascular bundle with the flexor digitorum superficialis in the middle third of the forearm exposes the flexor digitorum profundus and the flexor pollicis longus. This approach to the deep space requires no sharp dissection. In the dorsal forearm, a midline approach between the extensor digitorum communis and the extensor carpi radialis brevis is simple and safe.  相似文献

To evaluate the spatial distribution of human forearm musculature stressed by finger-specific exercise, magnetic resonance imaging was performed in conjunction with exercise protocols designed to separately stress the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus. These muscles were shown to consist of subvolumes selectively recruited by flexion of the individual fingers. Knowledge of the finger-specific regions of muscle recruitment during finger flexion could improve sampling accuracy in electromyography, biopsy, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and invasive vascular sampling studies of hand exercise.  相似文献

Hunting spiders are well adapted to fast locomotion. Space saving hydraulic leg extension enables leg segments, which consist almost soley of flexor muscles. As a result, the muscle cross sectional area is high despite slender legs. Considering these morphological features in context with the spider’s segmented C-shaped legs, these specifics might influence the spider’s muscle properties. Moreover, these properties have to be known for modeling of spider locomotion. Cupiennius salei (n = 5) were fixed in a metal frame allowing exclusive flexion of the tibia–metatarsus joint of the second leg (counted from anterior). Its flexing muscles were stimulated supramaximally using needle electrodes. Accounting for the joint geometry, the force–length and the force–velocity relationships were determined. The spider muscles produce 0.07 N cm maximum isometric moment (corresponding to 25 N/cm2 maximum stress) at 160° tibia–metatarsus joint angle. When overextended to the dorsal limit at approximately 200°, the maximum isometric moments decrease to 72%, and, when flexed to the ventral hinge stop at 85°, they drop to 11%. The force–velocity relation shows the typical hyperbolic shape. The mean maximum shortening velocity is 5.7 optimum muscle lengths per second and the mean curvature (a/F iso) of the Hill-function is 0.34. The spider muscle’s properties which were determined are similar to those of other species acting as motors during locomotion (working range, curvature of Hill hyperbola, peak power at the preferred speeds), but they are relatively slow. In conjunction with the low mechanical advantage (muscle lever/load arm), the arrangement of three considerably actuated joints in series may nonetheless enable high locomotion velocities.  相似文献

The role of the intrinsic finger flexor muscles was investigated during finger flexion tasks. A suspension system was used to measure isometric finger forces when the point of force application varied along fingers in a distal-proximal direction. Two biomechanical models, with consideration of extensor mechanism Extensor Mechanism Model (EMM) and without consideration of extensor mechanism Flexor Model (FM), were used to calculate forces of extrinsic and intrinsic finger flexors. When the point of force application was at the distal phalanx, the extrinsic flexor muscles flexor digitorum profundus, FDP, and flexor digitorum superficialis, FDS, accounted for over 80% of the summed force of all flexors, and therefore were the major contributors to the joint flexion at the distal interphalangeal (DIP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. When the point of force application was at the DIP joint, the FDS accounted for more than 70% of the total force of all flexors, and was the major contributor to the PIP and MCP joint flexion. When the force of application was at the PIP joint, the intrinsic muscle group was the major contributor for MCP flexion, accounting for more than 70% of the combined force of all flexors. The results suggest that the effects of the extensor mechanism on the flexors are relatively small when the location of force application is distal to the PIP joint. When the external force is applied proximally to the PIP joint, the extensor mechanism has large influence on force production of all flexors. The current study provides an experimental protocol and biomechanical models that allow estimation of the effects of extensor mechanism on both the extrinsic and intrinsic flexors in various loading conditions, as well as differentiating the contribution of the intrinsic and extrinsic finger flexors during isometric flexion.  相似文献

We dissected the left upper limb of a female orangutan and systematically recorded muscle mass, fascicle length, and physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA), in order to quantitatively clarify the unique muscle architecture of the upper limb of the orangutan. Comparisons of the musculature of the dissected orangutan with corresponding published chimpanzee data demonstrated that in the orangutan, the elbow flexors, notably M. brachioradialis, tend to exhibit greater PCSAs. Moreover, the digital II-V flexors in the forearm, such as M. flexor digitorum superficialis and M. flexor digitorum profundus, tend to have smaller PCSA as a result of their relatively longer fascicles. Thus, in the orangutan, the elbow flexors demonstrate a higher potential for force production, whereas the forearm muscles allow a greater range of wrist joint mobility. The differences in the force-generating capacity in the upper limb muscles of the two species might reflect functional specialization of muscle architecture in the upper limb of the orangutan for living in arboreal environments.  相似文献

For the extrinsic hand flexors (flexor digitorum profundus, FDP; flexor digitorum superficialis, FDS; flexor pollicis longus, FPL), moment arm corresponds to the tendon's distance from the center of the metacarpalphalangeal (MP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), or distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. The clinical value of establishing accurate moment arms has been highlighted for biomechanical modeling, the development of robotic hands, designing rehabilitation protocols, and repairing flexor tendon pulleys (Brand et al., 1975; An et al., 1983; Thompson and Giurintano, 1989; Deshpande et al., 2010; Wu et al., 2010). In this study, we define the moment arms for all of the extrinsic flexor tendons of the hand across all digital joints for all digits in cadaveric hands.  相似文献

Since musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities are believed to be associated with repetitive excessive muscle force production in the hands, understanding the time-dependent muscle forces during key tapping is essential for exploring the mechanisms of disease initiation and development. In the current study, we have simulated the time-dependent dynamic loading in the muscle/tendons in an index finger during tapping. The index finger model is developed using a commercial software package AnyBody, and it contains seven muscle/tendons that connect the three phalangeal finger sections. Our simulations indicate that the ratios of the maximal forces in flexor digitorum superficialis (FS) and flexor digitorum profundus (FP) tendons to the maximal force at the fingertip are 0.95 and 2.9, respectively, which agree well with recently published experimental data. The time sequence of the finger muscle activation predicted in the current study is consistent with the EMG data in the literature. The proposed model will be useful for bioengineers and ergonomic designers to improve keyboard design minimizing musculoskeletal loadings in the fingers.  相似文献

The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was examined in skeletal muscles of fore and hind limb as well as in oral and cranio-facial regions of the degenerating muscle (dmu) mouse, which harbours a null mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene Scn8a. In limb, oral and cranio-facial muscles of wild type mice, only a few motor endplates contained CGRP-immunoreactivity. However, many CGRP-immunoreactive motor endplates appeared in the triceps brachii muscle, the biceps brachii muscle, the brachialis muscle, and the gastrocnemius muscle of dmu mice. CGRP-immunoreactive density of motor endplates in the skeletal muscles was also elevated by the mutation. In these muscles, the atrophy of muscle fibers could be detected and the density of cell nuclei in the musculature increased. In the flexor digitorum profundus muscle, the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle, and the soleus muscle as well as in oral and cranio-facial muscles, however, the distribution of CGRP-immunoreactivity was barely affected by the mutation. The morphology of muscle fibers and the distribution of cell nuclei within them were also similar in wild type and dmu mice. In the lumbar spinal cord of dmu mice, CGRP-immunoreactive density of spinal motoneurons increased. These findings suggest that the atrophic degeneration in some fore and hind limb muscles of dmu mice may increase CGRP expression in their motoneurons.  相似文献

Summary The postnatal development, between 0 and 90 days, of three hindlimb muscles and diaphragm of the rat was investigated with respect to fiber types and diameter (histochemistry) and substrate oxidation rates and enzyme activities (biochemistry). The process of muscle fiber differentiation into mature patterns was evaluated by visual classification into 3 or 4 groups having different staining intensities for 3 enzyme-histochemical reactions, enabling 26 fiber types to be distinguished. These exhibited specific sizes and growth rates that varied among the muscles. One of the hindleg muscles (flexor digitorum brevis) remained much more immature than soleus and extensor digitorum longus.The histochemical and biochemical findings correlated well. The capacity for pyruvate and palmitate oxidation, and the activities of cytochrome c oxidase and citrate synthase, increased markedly between 9 and 37 days in soleus and extensor digitorum longus (except citrate synthase in the latter) but not in flexor digitorum brevis. Creatine kinase activity increased in all hindlimb muscles. Both the capacity and the activity of pyruvate oxidation (determined in homogenates and intact isolated muscles, respectively), were in accordance with the fiber type composition. In contrast to oxidation capacity, the activity of pyruvate oxidation decreased after birth until the mature stage, when a value of 18–42% of that of early postnatal muscles was recorded.  相似文献

We analyzed the time course of changes in muscle activity of the prime mover and synergist muscles during a sustained brake-pulling action and investigated the relationship between muscle activity and braking force fluctuation (FF). Thirty-two participants performed a continuous fatiguing protocol (CFP) at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) until failure. Surface electromyography was used to analyze root mean square (RMS) values in the flexor digitorum superficialis (FD), flexor carpi radialis (FC), extensor digitorum communis (ED), extensor carpi radialis (EC), brachioradialis (BR), biceps brachii (BB), and triceps brachii (TB). The FF and RMS in all muscles increased progressively (P<0.01) during the CFP, with sharp increments at time limit particularly in FD and FC (P<0.001). The RMS of the FD and FC were comparable to the baseline MVC values at time limit, in comparison to the other muscles that did not reach such levels of activity (P<0.003). The three flexor/extensor ratios used to measure coactivation levels decreased significantly (P<0.001). In contrast to RMS, MVC was still depressed at the minute 10 of recovery. The results suggest that the time limit was mainly constrained by fatigue-related mechanisms of the FD and FC but not by those of other synergist and antagonist muscles.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to explore muscle activity levels during different violin repertoires, quantify the general levels bilaterally in upper extremity muscles, and evaluate associations between muscle activity and anthropometrics characteristics. In 18 skilled violin players surface EMG was recorded bilaterally from trapezius (UT), flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU), extensor digitorum cummunis (EDC), and extensor carpi radialis (ECR) during A and E major scales played in three octaves and Mozart’s Violin Concerto no. 5. To compare side differences the static, median and peak levels of muscle activity were calculated from an amplitude probability distribution function (APDF). This study demonstrated that scales played as standardized tasks can be used to estimate the average muscle activity during violin playing. Comparing results from scales and the music piece revealed a similar muscle activity across all muscles in the music piece and E major scales. The static, median and peak EMG levels were higher in left than in right forearm muscles with left ECU presenting the highest peak load of 30 %MVE. Females demonstrated a higher muscle activity than males, but this was in accordance with differences in anthropometric measures.  相似文献

The importance of knuckle-walking in the locomotor repertoire of African apes raises the possibility that the long digital flexors may be specially adapted more to meet the demands of ground quadrupedalism than those of suspension. To investigate this possibiltiy, the activities of the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus were studied by means of telemetered electromyography in three chimpanzees. Results clearly indicate that the fasciculi of the muscles to digits bearing weight in knuckle-walking are not called upon to contract in quadrupedal postures or in slow and moderately fast quadrupedal locomotion except to help clear the fingers from the ground as the forelimb begins its recovery stroke. At the most rapid speeds, a slight to moderate level of activity sometimes occurs in the latter half of stance phase. The long digital flexors display maximum and sustained activity during suspension. It is concluded that any role for these muscles in maintenance of stability at the metacarpophalangeal joints during knuckle-walking must be predominantly passive. Prominent markings for insertions of these muscles in a fossil hand (such as O.H. 7) suggest use of the forelimb in suspensory climbing behaviors.  相似文献

Risk factors for activity-related tendon disorders of the hand include applied force, duration, and rate of loading. Understanding the relationship between external loading conditions and internal tendon forces can elucidate their role in injury and rehabilitation. The goal of this investigation is to determine whether the rate of force applied at the fingertip affects in vivo forces in the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon and the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) tendon during an isometric task. Tendon forces, recorded with buckle force transducers, and fingertip forces were simultaneously measured during open carpal tunnel surgery as subjects (N=15) increased their fingertip force from 0 to 15N in 1, 3, and 10s. The rates of 1.5, 5, and 15N/s did not significantly affect FDP or FDS tendon to fingertip force ratios. For the same applied fingertip force, the FDP tendon generated more force than the FDS. The mean FDP to fingertip ratio was 2.4+/-0.7 while the FDS to tip ratio averaged 1.5+/-1.0 (p<0.01). The fine motor control needed to generate isometric force ramps at these specific loading rates probably required similar high activation levels of multiple finger muscles in order to stabilize the finger and control joint torques at the force rates studied. Therefore, for this task, no additional increase in muscle force was observed at higher rates. These findings suggest that for high precision, isometric pinch maneuvers under static finger conditions, tendon forces are independent of loading rate.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles. Toe flexor strength and electromyography activity of the foot muscles were measured in 12 healthy men at 6 different ankle joint angles with the knee joint at 90 deg in the sitting position. To measure the maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles, subjects exerted maximum force on a toe grip dynamometer while the activity levels of the intrinsic and extrinsic plantar muscles were measured. The relation between ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles was determined, and the isometric force exhibited a peak when the ankle joint was at 70–90 deg on average. From this optimal neutral position, the isometric force gradually decreased and reached its nadir in the plantar flexion position (i.e., 120 deg). The EMG activity of the abductor hallucis (intrinsic plantar muscle) and peroneus longus (extrinsic plantar muscle) did not differ at any ankle joint angles. The results of this study suggest that the force generation of toe flexor muscles is regulated at the ankle joint and that changes in the length-tension relations of the extrinsic plantar muscle could be a reason for the force-generating capacity at the metatarsophalangeal joint when the ankle joint angle is changed.  相似文献

The long head of the triceps brachii as a free functioning muscle transfer   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This anatomic study investigates the possibility of using the long head of the triceps brachii muscle as a free functioning muscle transfer for the upper limb. It has been reported that the long head is not difficult to harvest and that its loss does not create significant donor-site morbidity. The muscle was studied in 23 fresh frozen upper limbs. The long head in all 23 specimens had a constant and proximal vascular pedicle from the profunda brachii artery and vein. The mean pedicle was long (4 cm) and had large-caliber vessels (diameter, 3-mm artery and 4-mm vein). Angiograms were carried out in five specimens and dye perfusion studies in six specimens. A single branch from the radial nerve of at least 7 cm in length innervated the muscle. Muscle architecture was studied in 12 specimens and revealed that the long head of the triceps is better suited for forearm reconstruction than either the gracilis or the latissimus dorsi muscles. The mean physiologic cross-sectional area (8.36 cm(2)) and fiber length (10.8 cm on the superficial surface and 8.2 cm on the deep surface) of the long head match more closely those of the flexor digitorum profundus and the extensor digitorum communis, the muscles most commonly replaced.  相似文献
