Sclerasterias richardi, a relatively deep sea asteroid (140–200 m) from the border of the Mediterranean continental shelf, is characterized by an asexual reproduction by fissiparity concomitant with a functional sexuality. A monthly sampling of a population from Calvi (Corsica) has allowed a study of the complete sexual cycle from 354 histologically-treated specimens. The 218 sexually defined animals (62% males, 38% females) show strict gonochorism. In males, spermatogenesis is cyclic and sexual maturity seems to be reached before that of the females. In females, the different stages of oogenesis are well marked: oogonia and parietal oocytes disappear only at maturity. Oligolecithic oocytes (120–150 μn) show a synchronous growth. The annual reproductive cycle is well defined in both sexes with one spawning period from mid-September to mid-October. After spawning, a resting period (from mid-October to mid-January) occurs during which unspawned oocytes are phagocytized by more or less isolated accessory cells. These phagocytic cells have never been found in male specimens. Each month the presence of specimens without gonads or unsexable individuals is one of the characteristics of this cycle. Their high proportion during the organization stage and after spawning can be easily explained. In March they are frequent too, owing to the infestation of gonads by Ciliates. As shown by our samples, the bottom water temperature is nearly the same during the whole year and cannot be directly involved as the dominant exogenous variable stimulating spawning. As a consequence of fissiparity which affects the main part of the population there is a great inter- and intra-individual variability. The reproductive potentiality is low: as a female emits approximatly 400–500 ova whose development produces planktotrophic larvae with a long pelagic life, it is clear that sexual reproduction is accessory in comparison with asexual reproduction by fission. 相似文献

Analysis of Giemsa-stained metaphase plates of plerocercoids ofSchistocephalus solidus revealed the mode diploid number of chromosomes for this species as 2n=18. Chromosome pairs 1, 5, 6, 8 and 9 are metacentric, pairs 2, 4 and 7 are subtelocentric, and pair 3 is subtelocentric to acrocentric. The karyotype is characterised by mean absolute chromosome length between 1.9 and 5.9 m and a total chromosome length of the haploid complement of 32 m. A comparison with other known karyotypes of related species of pseudophyllidean cestodes was made. 相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a key technology in the biophysicist’s toolbox for gaining atomic-level insight into structure and dynamics of biomolecules. Investigation of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) of Alzheimer’s disease is one area where NMR has proven useful, and holds even more potential. A barrier to realizing this potential, however, is the expense of the isotopically enriched peptide required for most NMR work. Whereas most biomolecular NMR studies employ biosynthetic methods as a very cost-effective means to obtain isotopically enriched biomolecules, this approach has proven less than straightforward for Aβ. Furthermore, the notorious propensity of Aβ to aggregate during purification and handling reduces yields and increases the already relatively high costs of solid phase synthesis methods. Here we report our biosynthetic and purification developments that yield pure, uniformly enriched 15N and 13C15N Aβ(1–42), in excess of 10 mg/L of culture media. The final HPLC-purified product was stable for long periods, which we characterize by solution-state NMR, thioflavin T assays, circular dichroism, electrospray mass spectrometry, and dynamic light scattering. These developments should facilitate further investigations into Alzheimer’s disease, and perhaps misfolding diseases in general. 相似文献

Water retention characteristics, rainfall, throughfall and soil water content dynamics were investigated in a low mountain area to compare a forest and a grassland. The soil water retention curve of the topsoil has similar shape in both studied areas, however that of the deeper soil layer shows more difference. We determined the precipitation depth, duration and intensity values of rainfall events. The relationship between rainfall and throughfall depth was described in linear regressions. Interception was calculated as the difference between rainfall and throughfall plus stemflow, assuming stemflow to be 3% of rainfall. Soil water content dynamics show a similar trend in the two vegetation types but the drying is more intensive in the forest in the soil layers deeper than 20 cm during the growing-season. 相似文献

The karyotypes of water mites (Acari: Hydrachnellae: Hydrodromidae) are largely unknown. The present investigation is the first report of a study designed to characterize the chromosomes of water mites. The study was carried out with specimens of Hydrodroma despiciens collected from Eber Lake in Afyon, Turkey. Several different methods were tried to obtain chromosomes of this species. However, somatic cell culture proved to be the most effective for the preparation of chromosomes. In the present study, we determined the diploid chromosome number of Hydrodroma despiciens to be 2n = 16. However, a large metacentric chromosome was found in each metaphase, which we believed to be the X chromosome. We could not determine the sex chromosomes of this species. This study is the first approach to the cytogenetic characterization of this water mite group. Furthermore, these cytogenetic data will contribute to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationship among water mites. Lineus viridis is a common nemertean species of North-Atlantic intertidal sand flats. Its mating behaviour is peculiar insofar as this species is reported to be polyandric. However, detailed information on this topic is lacking. In order to get more data on the reproduction, oogenesis and life history of this species, a population in the Wadden Sea on the Isle of Sylt (North Sea) was studied between 2005 and 2011. We conducted regular surveys, during which we sampled, measured and recorded the sex status of 25–100 individuals at each sampling event; at least three individuals were fixed for histological studies at each sampling date. In addition, animals were kept in the laboratory for 3?years to complement field data on sexual identity. Lineus viridis was found to reproduce annually in several successive year; the females are significantly larger than the males. Oogenesis starts in spring, shortly after the preceding reproductive period, and continues until the end of December. Spermiogenesis starts in late autumn and also ends late in December. During mating, several males are generally found crawling on a single female, which forms a cocoon that encloses both the female and the associated males. Fertilization is internal. While females discharge all of their eggs during a single mating event and lose more than 40% of their wet weight, males only empty a few of their gonads, and are thus able to fertilize more than one female. Our study clearly shows that Lineus viridis is a perennial, iteroparous species with a pronounced sexual size dimorphism. During this long-term study, no evidence for sequential hermaphroditism has been found. The observed polyandric mating system in this species raises further questions regarding mate and sperm competition that deserve additional research. 相似文献

We examined allozyme variation in two camaenid tree snails, Amphidromus atricallosus and A. inversus, across two principal regions of Thailand and from Singapore, plus for A. inversus, one site in peninsular Malaysia. Using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis, 13 allozyme loci (11 polymorphic) were screened for A. atricallosus and 18 (5 polymorphic) for A. inversus. Heterozygosity was higher in A. atricallosus (Hexp=0.018-0.201, mean=0.085) than in A. inversus (Hexp=0-0.023, mean= 0.002). Genetic heterogeneity among samples was higher in A. inversus (Fst=0.965) than in A. atricallosus (Fst=0.781). Within A. atricallosus, populations were more differentiated in southern Thailand (Fst=0.551) than in eastern Thailand (Fst=0.144). The high Fst and low Hexp in populations of A. inversus suggest that this species is likely to have experienced a series of strong bottlenecks, perhaps occurring chiefly on offshore continental-shelf islands. The low Fst values of A. atricallosus in eastern Thailand suggest frequent gene flows among populations in this region. The southern and eastern samples of A. atricallosus exhibited fixed allele differences at four loci and great genetic distance (Nei's D=0.485-0.946), suggesting that these two samples may actually represent, or else be evolving into, separate species. 相似文献

The bis(heptalene)dimetal complexes (C12H10)2M2 of the first row transition metals from Ti to Ni are predicted by density functional theory to exhibit “submarine” sandwich structures with a pair of metal atoms sandwiched between the two heptalene rings. For the early transition metal derivatives (C12H10)2M2 (M = V, Cr) there are two types of such structures. In one structural type the metals are sandwiched between two heptahapto heptalene rings with metal-metal distances (3.5–3.8 Å) too long for direct metal-metal bonding. The other type of (C12H10)2M2 (M = V, Cr, Mn) structure has a pair of bonded metal atoms sandwiched between a fully bonded heptalene ligand and a heptalene ligand bonded to the metals only through an eight-carbon heptafulvene subunit, leaving an uncomplexed cis-1,3-diene unit. The formal metal-metal bond orders in these latter structures are 3, 2, and 1 for M = V, Cr, and Mn with predicted bond lengths of 2.5, 2.7, and 2.8 Å, respectively. For (C12H10)2Fe2 a singlet structure with each iron atom sandwiched between a hexahapto and a tetrahapto heptalene ring is energetically preferred over an alternate structure with ferrocene-like iron atoms sandwiched between two pentahapto heptalene rings. Partial bonding of each heptalene ring to the metal atoms occurs in the late transition metal derivatives (C12H10)2M2 (M = Co, Ni). This leads to an unsymmetrical structure for the cobalt derivative and a structure for the nickel derivative with each nickel atom sandwiched between a trihapto ligand and a tetrahapto ligand. Figure

Summary 1. A quantitative study of the population biology ofPlanaria torva (Müller) living in a productive lake, based on monthly samples over a period of 20 months, is presented. 2. Samples of triclads, their cocoons and other organisms were taken from bricks placed at a shallow depth in the lake. They provided relative information on changes in population size structure and demonstrated the temporal breeding of this triclad. 3. Cocoon production byP. torva began in January and reached a peak in March–April. This was followed by a peak in recently-hatched young during May–June. Adults reached a maximal proportion of the total population in January and most had died by July. 4. Changes in size structure suggest that intra-specific competition occurred during June–July following the recruitment of young. This hypothesis is supported by other independent evidence. 5. Coastal wetlands reclamation is facing the problem of salinization. Along with the alternation of ecosystem status, studying the following effect on soil properties becomes emergency. Here we reported the pH, salinity and elemental content (mainly metals) variation affected by the vegetation situations, water sources and geographic positions. The results showed that vegetation could lead the pH and salinity of seawater zones closer to that of freshwater zones in both spatial and time scales. Spartina alterniflora (SA) was the most efficient species among the investigated plants, causing decreases of 0.15–0.69 in pH and 2.250–3.821 in salinity. This result might be caused by the absorption of Ca and K from salt marshes by SA and Suaeda salsa (SS), due to the fact that the component content of calcium (all reduced to approximate one-third) and potassium (reduced in some samples) both decreased. Meanwhile, vegetation could improve soil in seawater zones in Fe content with no extra negative influences in elemental analysis. Thus, ecological engineered vegetation indicated great potential in alternating coastal salt marshes to favorable wetlands or farmlands with almost primitive ecosystem. A fossil millipede representative of the order Stemmiulida is described on the basis of a well-preserved adult female trapped in amber from the Miocene of Simojovel, Chiapas, south-eastern México. The fossil specimen is named as Parastemmiulus elektron, a new genus and species. As observed in extant stemmiulids, this fossil shows a reduced number of ocelli, the distal larger than the proximal, as well as a total of 46 trunk segments including 2 apodous segments in front of the telson.
