In order to assess the influence of odors on human performance and implicit memory for odors, 108 subjects completed a variety of tests in weakly scented (jasmine, lavender or odorless) rooms without having been made aware of the odor. After a 30 min interval the subjects were shown slides of different surroundings, including the room they had been in, and were requested to rate how well a set of 12 odors, including a blank, would fit to these surroundings. Half of these contexts contained visual cues related to two of the presented odors (leather and coffee). After the rating of fit the subjects had to rate the odors for pleasantness, were asked to identify the odors with their correct names and to tell where and when they had last smelled these odors. One subject remembered smelling the odor (jasmine) in the room and was discarded from the analysis of the results for the rating of fit. None of the others reported recollection of the experimental odors. The results showed that in general jasmine had a negative and lavender a positive effect on test performance. If an odor-related visual cue was present in the context, the related odor was always rated highest in fit to that context. Furthermore, the subjects working in rooms with an odor subsequently assigned this odor to the visual context of that room to a significantly higher degree than subjects working in rooms with different odors. Since none of the subjects reported that they had smelled the odor in the rooms where performance testing took place, it was concluded that the memory for these odors was implicit. Further analysis showed that such memory was only found in subjects who were unable to supply the right name for the odor. The possible consequences of this latter finding for understanding the relationship between sensory (episodic) and semantic odor memory are discussed.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate whether thereis a consistent response in ongoing EEG due to repetitive olfactorystimulation. Two odors of different hedonic quality were presentedbilaterally to five male subjects at suprathreshold levels.A room-air blank served as the control stimulus. Each odor waspresented six times to each subject in each of three sessions.Electrocortical activity, heart rate, skin conductance and breathingcycle were recorded continuously. EEG variables assessed weredifference scores of absolute power in the frequency bands theta,alpha1, alpha2 and beta1 at eight locations. Phenylethyl alcoholwas rated pleasant, while valeric acid was judged unpleasant.Within 8 s after stimulus release, valeric acid increased alpha2power, whereas phenylethyl alcohol did not. Nonlinear dynamic properties were analyzed on the EEG and filtered rhythms recorded from healthy subjects and epileptic patients with complex partial seizures. Estimates of correlation dimensions of control EEG, interictal EEG and ictal EEG were calculated. The values were demonstrated on topograms. The delta (0.5–4 Hz), theta (4–8 Hz), alpha (8–13 Hz), beta (13–30 Hz) and gamma (30–40 Hz) components were obtained and considered as signals from the cortex. Corresponding surrogate data was produced. Firstly, the influence of sampling parameters on the calculation was tested. The dimension estimates of the signals from the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital regions were computed and compared with the results of surrogate data. In the control subjects, the estimates between the EEG and surrogate data did not differ (P > 0.05). The interictal EEG from the frontal region and occipital region, as well as its theta component from the frontal region, and temporal region, showed obviously low dimensions (P < 0.01). The ictal EEG exhibited significantly low-dimension estimates across the scalp. All filtered rhythms from the temporal region yielded lower results than those of the surrogate data (P < 0.01). The dimension estimates of the EEG and filtered components markedly changed when the neurological state varied. For each neurological state, the dimension estimates were not uniform among the EEG and frequency components. The signal with a different frequency range and in a different neurological state showed a different dimension estimate. Furthermore, the theta and alpha components demonstrated the same estimates not only within each neurological state, but also among the different states. These results indicate that the theta and alpha components may be caused by similar dynamic processes. We conclude that the brain function underlying the ictal EEG has a simple mechanism. The purpose of this study was to investigate EEG changes in subjects directly after inhalation of essential oils, and subsequently, to observe any effect on subjective evaluations. EEG and sensory evaluation were assessed in 13 healthy female subjects in four odor conditions. Four odor conditions (including lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and eugenol) were applied respectively for each subject in the experiment. The results were as follows. 1) Four basic factors were extracted from 22 adjective pairs by factor analysis of the sensory evaluation. The first factor was "comfortable feeling", the second "cheerful feeling", the third "natural feeling" and the fourth "feminine feeling". In the score of the first factor (comfortable feeling), the odors in order of high contribution are lavender, eugenol, chamomile and sandalwood. 2) Alpha 1 (8-10 Hz) of EEG at parietal and posterior temporal regions significantly decreased soon after the onset of inhalation of lavender oil (p < 0.01). Significant changes of alpha 1 were also observed after inhalation of eugenol or chamomile. The change after inhalation of sandalwood was not significant. These results showed that alpha 1 activity significantly decreased under odor conditions in which subjects felt comfortable, and showed no significant change under odor conditions in which subjects felt uncomfortable. These results suggest a possible correlation between alpha 1 activity and subjective evaluation.  相似文献

We examined the effects of odorant inhalation on the sleep-wake states in rats. Odorants used in the experiment were clove, jasmine, lavender, lemon, peppermint, pine, rose, sandalwood, valerian, and ylang-ylang. Valerian and rose inhalation significantly prolonged the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, whereas lemon inhalation significantly shortened it. The effect of valerian inhalation was markedly noticeable. In the anosmic rats, a significant effect of odorants on the pentobarbital sleep time was not seen. Electroencephalographic studies on natural sleep revealed that rose inhalation did not exert any significant effect on sleep, but a significant shortening in sleep latency and a significant prolonging in total sleep time were observed with valerian inhalation, whereas a significant prolonging in sleep latency was observed with lemon inhalation. Such effects of valerian and lemon inhalation were not admitted in anosmic rats. gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase assay indicates that valerian inhalation decreases the activity of the enzyme and enhances GABA activity. Although valerian has been reported to exert a good effect for sleep as a medicine for internal use, the present study is the first medical report suggesting that the inhalation of valerian may enhance the sleep. On the other hand, the present results may suggest the possibility that lemon inhalation may cause a worsening of insomnia symptoms.  相似文献

The repellent effects on nymphal stages of Ixodes ricinus L. of some plant materials have been studied in the laboratory. The plant material consisted of an ethanolic extract from Achillea millefolium L., and volatile oils of birch and/or pine tar, citronella, cloves, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lily of the valley and peppermint. The most pronounced effects were observed for the oils of citronella, cloves and lily of the valley. They possessed repelling activities of the same magnitude as the reference repellent DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide). Some major constituents of these oils, e.g. citronellol and geraniol (oil of citronella and lily of the valley) and eugenol (oil of cloves) showed pronounced repelling effects. This was also the case for phenethyl alcohol, a minor component in the oil from lily of the valley.  相似文献

Amplitude of the contingent negative variation component ofthe EEG was assessed in 18 subjects exposed to several odorconditions. Three primary odors were used as well as a mixtureof the primary odors. Subjects were led to believe that theodor mixture was actually three different odors which were lowconcentrations of each of the primary odors. CNV amplitude changedas a function of subjects' expectations about this mixed odorrather than the direct physiological effects of the odor stimulus.These results suggest that EEG changes to odors may be the resultof cognitive mediation rather than direct CNS changes inducedby the odors.  相似文献

Chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERP) can be used toexamine central nervous odor processing. An important questionfor understanding odor perception is how different concentrationsare processed. In the present study two odors were chosen whichactivate either the olfactory (linalool) or the trigeminal (menthol)system. Both odors were presented to 11 subjects in four differentconcentrations. Four subjects had to attend actively to theodors while the others perceived the odors under passive attention.The results showed that increased concentrations of the olfactorystimulus resulted in shorter latencies of the N1 component butdid not affect the amplitudes of the CSERP. However, the amplitudesof the stimulus dependent, exogenous components (N1, P2) increasedwith higher concentrations of the trigeminal stimulus. The amplitudeof the late positive complex, which reflects endogenous processes,was usually larger when the odorous stimuli had to be attendedto actively. Evoked desynchronization and synchronization of EEG in θ (4–7.5 Hz), α (7.5–14 Hz) and β (14–20 Hz) ranges were recorded by 19 electrodes in healthy volunteer adolescents and those with attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome in the modified GO/NO-GO test. Two stimuli (high and low tone) were presented in pairs with 1 s intervals inside the pair and 1.5 s intervals between the pairs. Test subjects had to push the button in response to presentation of a pair of high tones and to ignore other stimulus combinations. The components of evoked EEG synchronization in α-θ range that were revealed in the frontocentral and temporoparietal brain regions in connection with inhibition of action (inhibition of movements and making a decision to cancel sensory-motor task performance) were statistically significantly lower in subjects with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder compared with that in healthy subjects.  相似文献

Theta oscillations are related to cognitive functions and reflect functional integration of frontal and medial temporal structures into coherent neurocognitive networks. This study assessed event-related theta oscillations in medication-free, euthymic patients with bipolar disorder upon auditory oddball paradigm. Twenty-two DSM-IV euthymic bipolar I (n = 19) and II (n = 3) patients and twenty-two healthy subjects were included. Patients were euthymic for at least 6 months, and psychotropic-free for at least 2 weeks. EEG was recorded at 30 electrode sites. Auditory oddball paradigm and sensory stimuli were used. Event-related Oscillations were analyzed using adaptive filtering in two different theta frequency bands (4–6 Hz, 6–8 Hz). In healthy subjects, slow theta (4–6 Hz) responses were significantly higher than those of euthymic patients upon target, non-target and sensory stimuli (p < 0.05). Fast theta (6–8 Hz) responses of healthy subjects were significantly higher than those of euthymic patients upon target-only stimuli (p < 0.05). Reduced theta oscillations during auditory processing provide strong quantitative evidence of activation deficits in related networks in bipolar disorder. Fast theta responses are related to cognitive functions, whereas slow theta responses are related to sensory processes more than cognitive processes.  相似文献

A large body of findings has tied midfrontal theta-band (4–8 Hz) oscillatory activity to adaptive control mechanisms during response conflict. Thus far, this evidence has been correlational. To evaluate whether theta oscillations are causally involved in conflict processing, we applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) in the theta band to a midfrontal scalp region, while human subjects performed a spatial response conflict task. Conflict was introduced by incongruency between the location of the target stimulus and the required response hand. As a control condition, we used alpha-band (8–12 Hz) tACS over the same location. The exact stimulation frequencies were determined empirically for each subject based on a pre-stimulation EEG session. Behavioral results showed general conflict effects of slower response times (RT) and lower accuracy for high conflict trials compared to low conflict trials. Importantly, this conflict effect was reduced specifically during theta tACS, which was driven by slower response times on low conflict trials. These results show how theta tACS can modulate adaptive cognitive control processes, which is in accordance with the view of midfrontal theta oscillations as an active mechanism for cognitive control.  相似文献

Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was used for 19-channel resting EEG analysis 111 patients at early stages of depressive disorder and 526 age-matched healthy subjects. Comparison of independent components power spectra in depressed patients and healthy subjects in two states: Eyes closed and Eyes open, has revealed significant differences between groups for three frequency bands: Theta (4-7.5 Hz), Alpha (7.5-14 Hz), and Beta (14-20 Hz). Increased power of alpha and theta activity in depressed patients at parietal and occipital sites may be caused by decreased cortical activation of these regions. Diffuse enhancement of beta activity level can correlate with anxiety symptoms which take an important place in clinical picture of depressive disorder at early stages. Using of ICA method for comparison of spectral characteristics of EEG in groups of patients with different brain pathology and healthy subjects gives a possibility to localize more precisely the discovered differences as compare to traditional analysis of EEG spectra.  相似文献

Children with learning disabilities (LD) frequently have an EEG characterized by an excess of theta and a deficit of alpha activities. NFB using an auditory stimulus as reinforcer has proven to be a useful tool to treat LD children by positively reinforcing decreases of the theta/alpha ratio. The aim of the present study was to optimize the NFB procedure by comparing the efficacy of visual (with eyes open) versus auditory (with eyes closed) reinforcers. Twenty LD children with an abnormally high theta/alpha ratio were randomly assigned to the Auditory or the Visual group, where a 500 Hz tone or a visual stimulus (a white square), respectively, was used as a positive reinforcer when the value of the theta/alpha ratio was reduced. Both groups had signs consistent with EEG maturation, but only the Auditory Group showed behavioral/cognitive improvements. In conclusion, the auditory reinforcer was more efficacious in reducing the theta/alpha ratio, and it improved the cognitive abilities more than the visual reinforcer.  相似文献

 The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a multiscaled signal consisting of several time-series components each with different dominant frequency ranges and different origins. Nonlinear measures of the EEG reflect the complexity of the overall EEG, but not of each component in it. The aim of this study is to examine effect of the sound and light (SL) stimulation on the complexity of each component of the EEG. We used independent component analysis to obtain independent components of the EEG. The first positive Lyapunov exponent (L1) was estimated as a nonlinear measure of complexity. Twelve subjects were administered photic and auditory stimuli with a frequency of 10 Hz, which corresponded to the alpha frequency of the EEG, by a sound and light entrainment device. We compared the L1 values of the EEGs and their independent components between baseline and after the SL stimulation. We detected that the L1 values of the EEG decreased after the SL stimulation in all channels except C3 and F4, indicating that the complexity of the EEG decreased. We showed that alpha components increased in proportion but decreased in complexity after the SL stimulation. The beta independent components were found to decrease in proportion and complexity. These results suggest that decreased complexity of the EEG after the SL stimulation may be principally caused by decreased complexity and increased proportion of the alpha independent components. We showed also that theta components increased in complexity after the SL stimulation. We propose that nonlinear dynamical analysis combined with independent component analysis may be helpful in understanding the temporal characteristics of the EEG, which cannot be detected by conventional linear or nonlinear methods. Odor performance varies by clinical state and gender, though little is known about its variation by season or time of day. Many odors, including lavender, induce transient mood changes. This study explored discrimination differences between various lavender oil blends and their effects on transient mood in the morning and evening in depressed and nondepressed adults. We also determined seasonal influences on these measures. A total of 169 subjects, 98 women and 71 men (mean age +/- SD, 19.3 +/- 1.6 y) participated, with different subjects studied at different times of the year. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) classified subjects as depressed (score > or =10; N= 57) or nondepressed (score <10; N= 112). In the discrimination test, subjects compared pairs of two different lavender oil blends or a control. Transient change in mood was assessed by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) after each trial of five lavender blends interspersed by three control odors. Tests were conducted in the morning (08:00-10:00 h) and evening (18:00-20:00h). In all subjects, discrimination was significantly better for some odor pairs than for others, thus demonstrating test specificity. Discrimination was better overall in the fall than winter/spring and better in depressed than nondepressed subjects for specific odor pairs. No significant gender or time-of-day differences in discriminability were detected. There were, however, significant group differences in transient mood profiles. Current depressed state affected mood response, with lavender increasing anger in depressed subjects only. In addition, depressed subjects and men, whether or not depressed, exhibited diurnal mood variation, with better mood in the evening; the former group also showed more evening energy. All subjects were more confused in the morning than evening. Season also affected transient mood; winter/spring-tested subjects reported more vigor than fall-tested subjects. In addition, summer-tested subjects showed more tension in the morning, whereas fall-tested subjects showed the opposite pattern in the evening. In all subjects, lavender increased fatigue, tension, confusion, and total mood disturbance, and it decreased vigor. The study showed that both chronobiological (seasonal and time-of-day) and clinical factors modify discrimination and mood response to odors. Brief lavender odor presentation may serve as a nonphotic method for altering mood in young depressed and nondepressed adults particularly during the fall, a time of heightened discriminability.  相似文献

Human observers tend to group oriented line segments into full contours if they follow the Gestalt rule of ''good continuation''. It is commonly assumed that contour grouping emerges automatically in early visual cortex. In contrast, recent work in animal models suggests that contour grouping requires learning and thus involves top-down control from higher brain structures. Here we explore mechanisms of top-down control in perceptual grouping by investigating synchronicity within EEG oscillations. Human participants saw two micro-Gabor arrays in a random order, with the task to indicate whether the first (S1) or the second stimulus (S2) contained a contour of collinearly aligned elements. Contour compared to non-contour S1 produced a larger posterior post-stimulus beta power (15–21 Hz). Contour S2 was associated with a pre-stimulus decrease in posterior alpha power (11–12 Hz) and in fronto-posterior theta (4–5 Hz) phase couplings, but not with a post-stimulus increase in beta power. The results indicate that subjects used prior knowledge from S1 processing for S2 contour grouping. Expanding previous work on theta oscillations, we propose that long-range theta synchrony shapes neural responses to perceptual groupings regulating lateral inhibition in early visual cortex.  相似文献

Measures of event-related band power such as event-related desynchronization (ERD) are conventionally analyzed within fixed frequency bands, although it is known that EEG frequency varies as a function of a variety of factors. The question of how to determine these frequency bands for ERD analyses is discussed and a new method is proposed. The rationale of this new method is to adjust the frequency bands to the individual alpha frequency (IAF) for each subject and to determine the bandwidth for the alpha and theta bands as a percentage of IAF. As an example, if IAF equals 12 Hz, the widths of the alpha and theta bands are larger as compared to a subject with an IAF of, e.g., only 8 Hz. The results of an oddball paradigm show that the proposed method is superior to methods that are based on fixed frequencies and fixed bandwidths. Independent component analysis (ICA) of 19-channel background EEG was performed in 111 patients with the early signs of depressive disorders and in 526 healthy subjects. The power spectra of the independent components were compared in the depressive patients and in healthy subjects at the eyes closed and eyes opened states. Statistically significant differences between the groups were detected in three frequency bands: θ (4–7.5 Hz), α (7.5–14 Hz), and β (14–20 Hz). Increased θ and α activities in parietal and occipital derivations of depressive patients may have been caused by a reduced cortical activity in the projection of these derivation. Diffuse enhancement of the β activity may be correlated with anxiety symptoms that are pronounced in the clinical picture of depressive disorders at early stages of the disease. ICA used to compare quantitative EEG parameters in different groups of patients and in healthy persons makes it possible to localize the differences more accurately than the traditional analysis of EEG spectra.  相似文献

The EEG power in the β1, β2, and γ frequency bands during reading according to the method of “self-regulatory utterance” was compared in subjects reading aloud emotionally neutral business texts related to an unknown field of activity, fiction texts with clear positive or negative valences or personally important autobiographic texts with similar emotional valences. Two groups of subjects participated in the study: students training to be actors (N = 22) and students with other specializations (N = 23). We observed higher values of the EEG power in the γ (30–40 Hz) and β2 (18.5–29.5 Hz) frequency bands when comparing the states during reading of emotionally positive and emotionally negative fiction texts and personally important texts. These data are similar to our previous studies with the use of techniques that apply internal induction of positive or negative emotions without speech, in different groups of subjects. Internal induction of positive emotions was associated with an increase in the EEG power in these bands compared to the performance of an emotionally neutral task, whereas induction of negative emotions resulted in a decrease in the EEG power.  相似文献
