A water quality index (WQI) incorporates two shortcomings in the dynamic assessment of water quality, namely: (1) the sampling time series must be identical for each indicator and no missing data should occur, and (2) stationary weights cannot represent the changes in the pollutant importance. To solve these problems, the present study introduces the functional data analysis method into WQI research and establishes a dynamic WQI (D-WQI) model. D-WQI is a generalization of the conventional WQI. In the D-WQI model, the changes of water quality and pollutant importance are represented in the form of dynamic functional curves. The generation methods of the concentration curves, sub-index curves, dynamic weight curves, and WQI curves are discussed. As an illustration, the D-WQI model is applied in the water quality assessment of the Changjiang River in Sanjiangying in 2012. Result shows that the river can be classified as II (good) throughout the year, which can satisfy the requirement of the Chinese South-to-North Water Diversion Project.  相似文献

A first survey was done on algae present in the Sundays River from its source to its confluence with the sea. Species found in the upstream sections of the river included indicators of good water quality, but the quality deteriorated downstream with peaks in algal abundance being ascribed to peaks in nutrient concentrations. Cyanobacteria and euglenoids were present in the upper and middle reaches of the river, but were absent downstream. Dinoflagellates became more important downstream, especially in the estuary. Dominant species, reaching high concentrations along the river, included Nitzschia frustulum, Nitzschia capitellata, Carteria klebsii, Chlorella vulgaris and Anabaena species. The presence of the diatom Eolimna comperei is a first record of its occurrence in South Africa. The Sundays River can be described as a brackish, hard water system with high nutrient concentrations in certain sections. The most important contributors to high nutrient concentrations were point sources in the vicinity of towns along the river banks, as well as diffuse sources contributing to high nitrogen concentrations in the fertile Sundays River valley. Increasing salinities were due to pollution, evaporation and agricultural activities in the valley.  相似文献

The algal and cyanobacterial flora and the chemical environment of six freshwater streams of Schirmacher Oasis, Antarctica were investigated. Over 30 species of algae, predominantly cyanobacteria (Cyanophyceae), were recorded. N2-fixing species, both heterocystous and unicellular diazotrophs, contributed more than 50% to the counts and their dominance was greatest in the middle of the stream where nitrogen and other nutrients were low. Green algae and diatoms also contributed to the flora. The species composition varied between streams. Glacial and snow drift meltwater streams contained a distinctive community. Based on diversity indices, these streams could be classified into two clusters.  相似文献

调查了济南城内著名的黑虎泉、趵突泉、珍珠泉和五龙潭泉四大泉群中的藻类植物, 共计有80 种及变种, 分属于蓝、红、硅、裸、绿和轮藻门, 其中, 以硅藻门种类最丰富, 相对数量也占优势。根据藻类植物的分布, 利用指示生物法对泉水水质进行了定性初步评价, 结果表明, 济南的泉水较清洁。但是泉水涌出后的保洁和管理问题仍然较大, 需要重视。  相似文献

淡水藻类作为水体中的初级生产者,分布广泛,适应性强,在水生生态系统食物链中占据着十分重要的地位,在水质监测中起着关键的作用。通过对藻类生长与水环境之间的相互关系进行简要的概述,探讨了pH值和氮磷对淡水藻类的生长的影响,以及淡水藻类的生长对外界环境的影响。藻类不但应用于水质监测,而且还能去除水体中的氮、磷等营养物质和其它有机物,对自然水域中的污水有良好的净化作用。重点论述淡水藻类在水质监测和污水净化中的作用以及利用淡水藻类来处理污水的方法。并提出了保护水资源的相关建议,为综合监测和治理水环境提供一定的理论依据和支持。  相似文献

Microalgal cultures offer an interesting alternative for waste water treatment (urban, industrial or agricultural effluents) because they provide a tertiary biotreatment coupled with the production of potentially valuable biomass, which can be used for several purposes. We review the main abiotic, biotic and operative factors playing a role in the cultivation of microalgae. Various types of bioreactors are scrutinized keeping in view that the main limitation upon the type of usable bioreactors is the enormous volume of water to be treated. The choice of suitable microalgae and cyanobacteria is examined in terms of productivity and easiness of harvesting. The possible alternatives to harvesting are also reviewed with an emphasis on immobilized systems. Finally, the need for more research and development is discussed.This paper was presented at the Symposium on Applied Phycology at the Fourth International Phycological Congress, Duke University.  相似文献

Lowering of water level and algal biomass in Lake Kinneret   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
An unusual situation accompanied the rapid lowering of the lake level which took place during the period 1972–1975 as a result of low amounts of precipitation. The dominant alga of the lake (Peridinium cinctum f. westii), usually blooming from January to May, developed two months later than in previous years. The small and short peak of diatoms and green algae, which used to appear in January, extended until march, delaying the appearance of the winter bloom. The replacement of the non-grazed Peridinium having a high C : P ratio by the actively grazed diatoms and green algae having a low C : P ratio led to a substantial decrease of algal standing crop in the water. The chain of limnological events leading to the biological modification is investigated and its bearing on water quality is discussed.  相似文献

Settlement tiles were used to characterise and quantify coral reef associated algal communities along water quality and herbivory gradients from terrestrial influenced near shore sites to oceanic passage sites in Marovo Lagoon, the Solomon Islands. After 6 months, settlement tile communities from inshore reefs were dominated by high biomass algal turfs (filamentous algae and cyanobacteria) whereas tiles located on offshore reefs were characterised by a mixed low biomass community of calcareous crustose algae, fleshy crustose algae and bare tile. The exclusion of macrograzers, via caging of tiles, on the outer reef sites resulted in the development of an algal turf community similar to that observed on inshore reefs. Caging on the inshore reef tiles had a limited impact on community composition or biomass. Water quality and herbivorous fish biomass were quantified at each site to elucidate factors that might influence algal community structure across the lagoon. Herbivore biomass was the dominant driver of algal community structure. Algal biomass on the other hand was controlled by both herbivory and water quality (particularly dissolved nutrients). This study demonstrates that algal communities on settlement tiles are an indicator capable of integrating the impacts of water quality and herbivory over a small spatial scale (kilometres) and short temporal scale (months), where other environmental drivers (current, light, regional variability) are constant.  相似文献

The tolerance of microbenthic algal communities to two model toxicants,atrazine and copper, was studied in the Ter river during spring and summer.Artificial substrata were colonised at 9 sites and used to perform short-term(1–4 h) toxicity tests in the laboratory and to obtain photon yield as theecotoxicological endpoint. The tolerance was lower in spring than insummer for both toxic substances and varied according to the site studied.Copper toxicity was associated with physico-chemical conditions (totalsuspended solids and water pH) and, especially, with severalbiomass-related parameters, whereas atrazine toxicity was related to algalabundance and species composition. Temporal and spatial changes innutrient concentration may alter the biomass and species composition ofthe communities and thus affect their tolerance to toxic substances. It hasto be therefore considered that the environmental characteristics of theriver system may determine relevant direct and indirect effects on the algalcommunities, then affecting their specific ecotoxicological responses. Oncethis is assumed, the empirical expressions obtained on calculatingEC50 and EC10 can be used to predict the community-leveltransient effects of toxic exposures.  相似文献

Water quality indicators can be used to characterize the status and quantify and qualify the change of aquatic ecosystems under different disturbance regimes. Although many studies have been done to develop and assess indicators and discuss interactions among them, few studies have focused on how to improve the predicted indicators and explore their variations in receiving water bodies. Accurate and effective predictions of ecological indictors are critical to better understand changes of water quality in aquatic ecosystems, especially for the real-time forecasting. Process-based water quality models can predict the spatiotemporal variations of the water quality indicators and provide useful information for policy-makers on sound management of water resources. Given their inherent constraints, however, such process models alone cannot actually guarantee perfect results since water quality models generally have a large number of parameters and involve many processes which are too complex to be efficiently calibrated. To overcome these limitations and explore a fast and efficient forecasting method for the change of water quality indictors, we proposed a new framework which combines the process-based models and data assimilation technique. Unlike most traditional approaches in which only the model parameters or initial conditions are updated or corrected and the models are run online, this framework allows the information extracted from observations and outputs of process models to be directly used in a data-driven local/modified local model. The results from the data-driven model are then assimilated into the original process model to further improve its forecasting ability. This approach can be efficiently run offline to directly correct and update the output of water quality models. We applied this framework in a real case study in Singapore. Two of the water quality indicators, namely salinity and oxygen were selected and tested against the observations, suggesting that a good performance of improving the model results and reducing computation time can be obtained. This approach is simple and efficient, especially suitable for real-time forecasting systems. Thus, it can enhance forecasting of water quality indictors and thereby facilitate the effective management of water resources.  相似文献

An observational design technique supporting water quality modelling was reviewed and evaluated. The practical feasibility and mathematical sensitivity of the method were analysed for Lake Kuortaneenjärvi, Western Finland. A sampling programme to estimate characteristic rate parameters for competition between the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacter Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and eukaryotic phytoplankton was produced and the robustness of the design with respect to parameters and input was studied using the Monte Carlo technique. Optimal timing of observations appeared to be more sensitive to noise in the parameter values than to stochasticity in the model input, which consisted of data on the nutrient loading and climatic conditions of the lake. The perturbated parameter values favoured the weighting of phytoplankton dynamics, whereas the perturbations of the input shifted the design towards cyanobacterial dominance. It was concluded that this was because correct timing of algal succession was the most crucial element in successful estimation. Considerable rationalization of the use of measurement resources can be achieved by adopting the design procedure. This was also demonstrated for Lake Kuortaneenjärvi.  相似文献

Changes in epilithic algal communities colonizing introduced substrata were determined in a stream polluted with oil refinery effluent at Digboi (Assam, India). The number of algal taxa was reduced but the growth of blue-green algae, particularly two species ofOscillatoria, was encouraged. Epilithic biomass (as chlorophylla) also declined at polluted stations. The algal community of the upstream station was markedly different from the community occurring just after the confluence of effluent; however, the differences were gradually reduced downstream, indicating improvement in water quality. Of the various criteria tested for possible relationships with the level of pollutants, species richness, Shannon diversity and biomass showed significant relationships. The study demonstrates the usefulness of algal criteria for monitoring oil pollution in running waters.  相似文献

Qualitative reasoning has been successfully used for ecological modelling, particularly when numerical data are not available. However, in order to further explore the potential of this modelling approach, it is important to discuss how to incorporate numerical data, if available, and to develop means to evaluate conceptual aspects and model outputs. This paper describes a study on qualitative model evaluation, in which numerical data about water quality are used to define different scenarios in a water basin, so that the outputs of simulations with the model can be compared to the actual system. The model was evaluated by independent experts, concerning its conceptual and operational aspects, and with respect to its predictive capability. The model was considered valid for the intended use, which is to increase the understanding of non-expert water managers.  相似文献

Samples from 28 stations along the St. Joeeph River in Michigan and Indiana were collected in the Summer and late Fall of 1972. The samples were analyzed chemically (BOD, soluble orthophosphate, total phosphate, and NH3), physically (temperature and suspended solids) and biologically (algal units, Palmer's index, bacteria, and microalgal spectral analysis). Three methods of algal evaluation (microalgal spectral analysis, algal units, and the Palmer's index) provided especially good information indicating that nutrients and degradation were a distinct problem in the lower half of the river, not only in the Indiana portion, but also in Michigan. A pronounced water quality deterioration occurred in Michigan at Niles and at St. Joseph-Benton Harbor at the mouth of the river. Evidence of improved water quality was provided by the algal analyses after the installation of improved waste water treatment facilities. Microalgal spectral analysis was judged the best and most accurate of the methods of algal analysis in spite of its extensive terminology and necessity of determination of the algae to species.  相似文献

The Dongjiang River plays an important role in southern China, as a source for irrigation and potable water of Hongkong and the other parts of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The water quality index (WQI) was calculated to assess the spatial and temporal variability and identify the classification of water quality in the river. In order to simplify the procedure and reduce the analytical costs of the water quality evaluation, a modified WQI (defined as WQImin) was introduced based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and correlations analyses of the water parameters detected in dry and wet seasons during 2011–2012. Compared with the previous index, similar spatial changing trend and classification of the water quality were obtained by WQImin, which was composed of pH, temperature, total suspended solid, NH4+-N, and NO3-N. The results showed an excellent water quality in the tributary site near the reservoir, a good water quality in the upstream of the river, and medium water quality in the downstream of the river, which suggested that the urban wastewater originated from increasing population size and industry development in the downstream mainly led to the deterioration of water quality along the river. Moreover, WQImin could more adequately reflect the seasonal changes of water quality which was slightly worse in dry season than wet season. Our results also suggest that continuous monitoring should be conducted to prevent pollution from industry and anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

In 1987 the Tidal Waters Division (Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, The Netherlands) initiated the SAWES project (Systems Analysis WEstern Scheldt). In the framework of this project, a water quality model for the Scheldt estuary was made. The model aims to establish the relation between pollution inputs and the concentration of pollutants in the abiotic compartments and to establish the fate of wasted substances. The model includes oxygen, nitrogen and trace metals. Due to the low oxygen content of the upper Scheldt estuary, a new model approach for trace metals had to be developed, taking into account precipitated metal sulphides. The calibration, verification and sensitivity analysis of the model provided a good understanding of the chemistry of the estuary. Afterwards the model was used to support policy making by computing how the water and sediment quality in the estuary respond to reduced inputs of waste.  相似文献

为了研究矿物盐对淡水养殖池塘水质的改良效果及应用前景,在12口土质池塘中对淡水养殖斑点叉尾鲴(Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque,1818)施用三组矿物盐:NaNO3、KCl+MgCl2、NaNO3+KCl+MgCl3的对照实验,对照组池塘不施用任何矿物盐类;在182d的养殖期间,对所有处理组和对照组池塘的17项水质和5项底质因子进行了定期监测.结果表明,各处理组均显著降低了池塘水中的蓝藻相对密度;KCl+MgCl2的施用可促进水中硝化作用的进行;NaNO3+KCl+MgCl2的施用,显著提高了养殖池塘底泥表层的氧化还原电位;NaNO3+KCl+MgCl2组的池塘鱼产量比对照组显著提高6.6%,而饲料系数显著降低6.2%;NaNO3与KCl+MgCl2的共同施用起到了协同改良池塘水质和底质的作用.因此,NaNO3+KCl+MgCl2的应用可为淡水池塘水质的改良开辟一个新的途径,具有一定的应用前景.  相似文献

Zooplankton population structure in Rutland Water changed over the first five years of the reservoir's existence. Daphnia pulex, initially dominant was replaced by D. hyalina in late 1975 and since 1979 this latter cladoceran has coexisted for part of each year with Bosmina longirostris. Population fluctuations of all the main crustacean zooplankton — D. hyalina, Cyclops spp. and Diaptomus gracilis — were erratic in the first three years (1975–1977) but have since become more regular. The relationships of the zooplankton with their potential algal food supply and with their potential predators, the fish population, are discussed.  相似文献

Known Proterozoic algal fossils raise compelling questions about the origin and diversification of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae, and their ecological influence in deep time. This Perspectives article describes particular examples of persistent evolutionary and biogeochemical issues whose resolution would be aided by additional algal fossil evidence from Proterozoic deposits, which have been the subjects of recent intensive study. New Proterozoic geosciences literature relevant to the early diversification of algae is surveyed. Previously underappreciated algal traits that might improve taxonomic attributions of fossil remains are highlighted. Processes that phycologists could use to improve detection of algal fossils are recommended. Potential geological sources of new Proterozoic fossils are suggested.  相似文献
