The assessment of sustainable development is a challenging task as its measuring is rather complex without a mature framework. In this paper, as a case study, a coastal city of China-Yantai was assessed for sustainable development in the period from 1998 to 2007. We used a methodological framework based on 36 indicators and three composite indices from the dimensions of environment, economy and society subsystems. The assessment results indicated that Yantai was almost in the potentially unsustainable development or intermediate sustainable development, except in 1998 and in 2007. Accordingly, the progress of sustainable development was divided into two stages in the light of the relative changes of three subsystems. Some relevant issues, such as natural capital, GPI vs. GDP in sustainable development assessment were discussed. Finally, an uncertainty analysis was also given in the assessment. In conclusion, the sustainable development in Yantai had experienced a shift from environment-based to social–economic-based in the past 10 years. 相似文献

The diversity of tropical forest plant phenology has called the attention of researchers for a long time. We continue investigating
the factors that drive phenological diversity on a wide scale, but we are unaware of the variation of plant reproductive phenology
at a fine spatial scale despite the high spatial variation in species composition and abundance in tropical rainforests. We
addressed fine scale variability by investigating the reproductive phenology of three contiguous vegetations across the Atlantic
rainforest coastal plain in Southeastern Brazil. We asked whether the vegetations differed in composition and abundance of
species, the microenvironmental conditions and the reproductive phenology, and how their phenology is related to regional
and local microenvironmental factors. The study was conducted from September 2007 to August 2009 at three contiguous sites:
(1) seashore dominated by scrub vegetation, (2) intermediary covered by restinga forest and (3) foothills covered by restinga
pre-montane transitional forest. We conducted the microenvironmental, plant and phenological survey within 30 transects of
25 m × 4 m (10 per site). We detected significant differences in floristic, microenvironment and reproductive phenology among
the three vegetations. The microenvironment determines the spatial diversity observed in the structure and composition of
the flora, which in turn determines the distinctive flowering and fruiting peaks of each vegetation (phenological diversity).
There was an exchange of species providing flowers and fruits across the vegetation complex. We conclude that plant reproductive
patterns as described in most phenological studies (without concern about the microenvironmental variation) may conceal the
fine scale temporal phenological diversity of highly diverse tropical vegetation. This phenological diversity should be taken
into account when generating sensor-derived phenologies and when trying to understand tropical vegetation responses to environmental

Silica is ubiquitous in plants and can constitute up to 10% of plant dry mass, varying with phylogeny and soil silicon availability. Plant silicon is an important alleviator of abiotic (salinity, heavy metal, drought) and biotic (herbivore and fungal pathogen) stress. As well as playing an important role in reducing the impact of abiotic stresses, silicon may be an alternative to carbon‐based and other chemical defences. Knowledge of silicon function is predominantly derived from agricultural species and model systems. We investigated the abundance and role of plant silicon at a community level by comparing leaf silicon concentration with defence chemicals, carbon compound concentrations and invertebrate assemblages in vegetation communities from two different soil types with contrasting levels of plant available silicon. We found that the concentrations of silicon in the leaves did not reflect the silicon availability in the soil at a community level. The leaf silica concentration range in the vegetation communities was comparable to other diverse communities reported in the literature, suggesting that the species rather than the environment determine leaf silica concentration. Across sites, leaf silica concentration was significantly negatively correlated with concentrations of carbon, total phenols and weakly with tannins but not with other measured defence compounds. Leaf silica concentration was also negatively correlated with Coleoptera abundance, but not the abundance of any other invertebrate groups measured. Our results suggest that tradeoffs exist between phenolic‐ and tannin‐based defences and provide evidence that leaf silicification may be a more effective defence against some chewing herbivore groups than others. 相似文献

This study investigates the potentially deleterious effect of prolonged sample storage on the reliability of calcareous nannofossil species abundance and community diversity measures and their subsequent interpretation as paleoceanographic proxies. Nannofossil assemblages from two freshly cored successions of hemipelagic clay were documented over a one-year period using a series of paired smear-slides, the first made from sediment samples within a day of coring and the second either 6 months or 1 year later. Diversity measured by Shannon's H is consistent between the two sets for the majority of samples, however significant changes, both positive and negative, were recorded in a number of cases and appear to be largely due to variations in smear-slide thickness and not to post-sampling dissolution. There is no significant change in nannofossil fragmentation or abundance over time, although the relative abundances of small, dissolution susceptible placoliths of Reticulofenestra minuta do appear to decrease with time in some samples. Counts of mineral grains show that there is a significant loss of fine, 1–2 μm, cubic pyrite within months of drilling, and this, combined with the decline in abundance of R. minuta, suggests that limited pyrite oxidation coupled to carbonate dissolution is occurring. Geochemical analyses confirm that these sediments contain significant concentrations of sulphate one year after sample recovery, which may be the result of gypsum formation associated with the oxidation of pyrite. Estimates of pyrite oxidation suggest that up to 3% of the original calcium carbonate has dissolved in the year after coring, which could account for the observed loss of small placoliths. Effects of this kind are almost certainly confined to hemipelagic sequences rich in organic matter and/or reduced iron but are frequently offset by the exceptional preservation of calcareous microfossils that can occur within such sediments. 相似文献

Costs, benefits and the evolution of inducible defences: a case study with Daphnia pulex 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phenotypic plasticity is one major source of variation in natural populations. Inducible defences, which can be considered threshold traits, are a form of plasticity that generates ecological and evolutionary consequences. A simple cost-benefit model underpins the maintenance and evolution of these threshold, inducible traits. In this model, a rank-order switch in expected fitness, defined by costs and benefits of induction between defended and undefended morphs, predicts the risk level at which individuals should induce defences. Here, taking predator-induced morphological defences in Daphnia pulex as a threshold trait, we provide the first comprehensive investigation into the costs and benefits of a threshold trait, and how they combine to reflect fitness and predict the switchpoint at which induction should occur. We develop reaction norms that show genetic variation in switchpoints. Further experiments show that induction can confer a survival benefit and a cost in terms of lifetime reproductive success. Together, these two traits combine to estimate expected fitness and can predict the switchpoint between an undefended and a defended strategy. The predictions match the reaction norm data for clones that experience these costs and benefits, and correspond well to independent field data on induction. However, predictions do not, and cannot, match for clones that do not gain a benefit from induction. This study confirms that a simple theory, based on life history costs and benefits, is a sufficient framework for understanding the ecology and evolution of inducible, threshold traits. 相似文献

A historical cemetery on Majuro Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands, was partially washed away during an exceptional seasonal high tide. The osteological analysis of the human remains washed out by the tides showed that the anatomical representation of the bones found on the shoreline is distinctly skewed, caused by the erosion of the graves by wave action and the differential transport of bones by waves and currents. The two major factors involved in the observed differential preservation of skeletal elements appear to be (i) the overall weight of the bone and (ii) its ability to float. Light-weighted bones, such as the phalanges, or heavily spongiotic bones, such as vertebrae and patellae, float easily and — by wave and tidal action — can be carried out to sea, leaving the heavier bones, such as femora, tibiae, or non-floating bones, such as the crania and mandibles, behind. 相似文献

The halophilous vegetation of the Orumieh lake salt marshes has been studied, using the Braun-Blanquet method. Vegetation types have been defined by physiognomic-floristic system. The following six main groups of communities are recognized: (1) Semi-woody shrub and perennial halophytic communities (Class Halocnemetea strobilacei) including 6 associations and 5 subassociations, (2) Annual halophytic communities (Class Thero-Salicornietea) including 5 associations and 1 subassociation, (3) Salt marsh brushwood communities (Class Tamaricetea) including 4 associations, (4) Rush and herbaceous perennial halophytic communities (Class Juncetea maritimi) including 7 associations and 1 subassociation, (5) Rush and herbaceous perennial halotolerant communities (Class Agrostietea stoloniferae) including 5 associations, (6) Hydrophilous halotolerant communities (Class Phragmitetea) including 3 associations and 2 subassociations. Vegetation development in the lowland floodplain alder carr “Na bahně” (eastern Bohemia, the Czech Republic) has been studied by means of pollen and macrofossil analyses and combined with vegetation analysis performed over the last 70 years. Local successional changes started with an oxbow lake (160 cal BC) which has later terrestrialised (630 cal AD). Then it changed from a typical alluvial fen into aSphagnum-dominated spring mire (950 cal AD) supplied by water arising from a river terrace surrounding the locality from three sites. In the centre of this wetland a small patch of alder carr developed (100 cal. AD), showing some tendency towards cyclic succession. The alder carr alternated several times with an openCarex fen (1100 cal AD to recent). The last fen-to-alder carr transition has been documented by direct observation during this century. Possible autogenic and allogenic factors driving the succession are discussed. The model of autogenic cyclic succession corresponds well with direct field observations and can be used to interpret alder carr structure, its dynamics, and function. 相似文献

Allochthonous coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) input into the Njoro River was measured between January and June 1998 at two contrasting sites: open-canopy and closed-canopy sites. Bank runoff and aerial drift traps were used for collecting CPOM inputs over periods of two weeks. Collected litter was sorted into four categories: leaves, fruits, wood and plant fragments. Monthly input ranged from 77 to 228 g ash free dry weight m–1 for bank runoff input and from 64 to 129 g ash free dry weight m–2 for aerial input. The highest input of 228 g ash free dry weight m–1 was recorded in May at the closed-canopy site. Wood, fruits and plant fragments of particle size >100 m contributed a mean ± SE of 60±9% of the total inputs with the rest from leaf litter. The closed-canopy site had higher inputs (P<0.05) of bank and aerial input than the open canopy site. There was no relationship between total bank runoff input and rainfall (r
s = 0.08), however, total aerial input increased with decrease in rainfall (r
s = – 0.59). There were differences between inputs from different plant species (P<0.05) that ranked in the following order: Syzygium cordatum > Rhus natalensis > Pittosporum viridiflorum > Vangueria madagascariensis. Removal of riparian vegetation from the banks of the Njoro River would alter the quantity and quality of the litter and reduce CPOM inputs to the river and to a downstream lake with attendant consequences to the energy budget of biocoenoses in the two ecosystems. 相似文献

Altitudinal changes in composition and structure of mountain-temperate vegetation: a case study from the Western Carpathians 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Changes in composition and structure of plant communities in relation tothe soil and snow cover variation were analyzed along an altitudinal transect(1150–1750 m) from the mountain-temperate forests to a woodyshrub community and alpine meadows on Mt Velký Gápel', Slovakia.The soils below the treeline (1510 m) had a more developedorganic layer above the mineral substratum. Generally, soil depth decreased asthe altitude increased, although the maximum values were recognized at a middlealtitude in a beech stand. Snow was redistributed by westerly winds from theridgeline down to the upper forest margin. Mean snow depth decreased withaltitude up to almost snow-free sites around the summit. In the 48 plots at 16sites we recorded 118 taxa including 6 tree, 7 shrub, 18 grass, 42 herb, 5fern,25 moss and 15 lichen species. The species diversity showed no distinctrelationship to altitude but declined with canopy consolidation. The TWINSPANfloristic classification distinguished five groups of community typescharacterised by different dominants, and a further three clusters of samplesfrom transition zones. Horizontal compositional heterogeneity increased inareaswhere trees were aggregated and tree basal area was smaller. Vegetationcomposition became more patchy at open-canopy Acerpseudoplatanus–Abies alba mixed forest at 1150 m,in Picea abies forest limit 1470 m, andin Pinus mugo krummholz at 1590 m. Speciesturnover of the entire transect was 6.1 half-changes as estimated by DCA.Despite this heterogeneity, none of the 15 elevational bands had significantaggregation of species' limits. Vegetation varied continuously, with individualspecies overlapping in transition zones delimited by dominant taxa. Thecoincident aggregation of up-slope and down-slope boundaries was found at abelt1430–1510 m. This discrete ecotone corresponds to a shiftfrom the closed coniferous forest to P. mugo krummholz.Thesecond inherent up-slope boundary aggregation indicated the P.mugo krummholz – alpine meadow vegetation transition at1700 m. Spatial analysis (K-function) of eight forest plots(0.12 ha each) showed that at lower elevation, adult trees of thebroad-leaf forest were closer to a random arrangement while at higherelevation,trees of evergreen coniferous stands became aggregated toward the forest limitwith the highest intensity from 2 to 4 m. Altitudinal gradient andrelated factors explained 35% of the variance in vegetation data.Canonical correspondence analysis also showed that main vegetation changesabovethe treeline area were associated with the topographic pattern of pine shrubsand snow cover. 相似文献

A coupled 3D hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model was developed and implemented for the Sacca di Goro coastal lagoon. The model considers nutrient and oxygen dynamics in water column and sediments. Among the biological elements, phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria, Ulva sp. and commercial shellfish (Tapes philippinarum) were taken into consideration. Nutrients fluxes from the watershed and open sea, as well as atmospheric inputs, heat flux, light intensity and wind shear stress at the water surface constituted the model forcing functions. The comparison of numerical results with available measurement data indicated that the model was able to capture the essential dynamics of the lagoon. Summary In studying permanent quadrats established in an algal vegetation by means of sampling in the quadrat itself, the vegetation is exposed to the risk of disturbance by the sampling. By taking small samples (microsampling or reduced size sampling) this risk is reduced considerably. The quantitative minimal area of vegetation units ofVaucheria, filamentous green algae and Oscillatoriaceae is less than 20 mm2. InVaucheria components, however, often the viability for cultivation purposes is the limiting factor for the size of a sample suitable for a complete analysis of the permanent quadrat. The minimum size of a viableVaucheria sample is 1 cm2. The disturbance of the algal layer by other external factors is often more intense than that caused by sampling. Bahía Concepción (Gulf of California) was studied to describe some extremely low dissolved-oxygen values at the bottom of the bay. Surveys included measurements of vertical distribution of temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, phosphates and hydrogen sulfide. Thermal stratification from early spring to autumn and a well-mixed water column during the winter were present. Dissolved-oxygen concentration was homogeneous in the water column from winter to spring (5-7 mg L-1). From summer to autumn, bottom dissolved oxygen (> 20 m) decreased to reach conditions of hypoxia (1-2 mg L-1) or anoxia; nitrate, nitrite, and phosphates increased (up to 13, 1.7 and 2.2 microM) followed by a last short period of a deep hydrogen sulfide layer (up to 3.1 mg L-1). A back calculation to estimate the input of organic matter in the deep layer showed that 18 g C m-2 y-1 needed to be trapped in the bottom to induce such an oxygen depletion. This period is thought to be unfavorable for bottom infauna in this bay. 相似文献

A light microscopic and molecular analysis of photobionts in Ramalina and Cladonia from coastal habitats of Brazil is presented. A Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of ITS rDNA sequences suggests a Trebouxia lineage which is preferentially tropical in geographic distribution. This highly diverse clade also includes the morphological similar species Trebouxia higginsiae and galapagensis. Within the predominantly tropical clade of Trebouxia we distinguish several subclades, three of which are represented in our samples of Ramalina species. Since sexuality has not been recognized in coccal lichenised photobionts until recently, we cannot apply a biological species concept, but when compared with the sequence diversity between known species we conclude that several new species need to be described in this clade. The mutually exclusive presence of other Trebouxia lineages in temperate samples of Ramalina suggests an evolution towards higher selectivity in this genus. A strictly tropical lineage is not conspicuous in the photobionts of the genus Asterochloris sampled from Cladonia so far. 相似文献

Vegetation significantly affects hillslope hydrological and mechanical properties related to shallow landslide triggering. In view of the complexity of soil plant hydrological interactions, the quantification of root mechanical reinforcement remains a challenge. Herein we present a back analysis of mechanical stability criteria related to a well-characterized vegetated shallow landslide in Italy, focusing on the quantification of lateral and basal root reinforcement. Lateral root reinforcement is included in slope stability estimates by adding a stabilizing force proportional to the scarp surface and root distribution. This stabilizing force is added to the force balance equation for the infinite slope model for different landslide shapes and dimensions. To quantify root reinforcement, we use the Wu model and the fiber bundle model (WM and FBM, respectively). Implementation of the latter model allows the quantification of the stress–strain behaviour of a bundle of roots for different root distributions and mechanical properties. Results of these models are compared highlighting key differences between the two approaches. Calculations using the FBM can explain the overestimation of lateral root reinforcement using WM and the commonly observed overestimation in the factor of safety. The model also quantifies the displacement-dependent behaviour of root reinforcement on vegetated slopes. Lateral root reinforcement can strongly influence the stability of slopes up to a certain area (1000–2000 m2).
