Unusual phosphatic casts of the ammonites Mortoniceras (Subschloenbachia) sp. and Stoliczkaia sp. from the upper Albian condensed phosphorite bed at Annopol, Poland, are discussed in terms of their taphonomic history. These specimens are interpreted as ‘secondary’ external casts of ammonite replicas preserved originally as attachment scars on oyster shells. The following genetic history is suggested for this previously undocumented mode of ammonite preservation: (1) settling of shells of dead ammonites on the seafloor; (2) colonization of these shells by oysters and formation of ammonite replicas on left valves of oysters; (3) dissolution of ammonite shells; (4) reworking and fragmentation of oyster shells; (5) casting of ammonite replicas by phosphatic material; and (6) separation of ammonite casts from oyster shells, either through mechanical disintegration or dissolution of the latter. The specimens studied were formed after dissolution of the ammonite conchs, not prior to this event as in the case of typical ammonite steinkerns (internal moulds). Therefore, they are here referred to as ‘pseudo‐steinkerns’. The time interval between loss of the original ammonite shells and the formation of oyster‐mediated pseudo‐steinkerns may be very extensive. Therefore, the pseudo‐steinkerns may potentially mislead in biostratigraphic dating of condensed phosphorite deposits.  相似文献

Conifer fragments from the Lower Cretaceous of Sudan are preserved as internal and external silica moulds. Low viscosity silicone rubber has been used to prepare casts showing fine epidermal details which enable identification of the plants. The Sirius Passet Lagerstätte (SP), Peary Land, North Greenland, occurs in black slates deposited at or just below storm wave base. It represents the earliest Cambrian microbial mat community with exceptional preservation, predating the Burgess Shale by 10 million years. Trilobites from the SP are preserved as complete, three‐dimensional, concave hyporelief external moulds and convex epirelief casts. External moulds are shown to consist of a thin veneer of authigenic silica. The casts are formed from silicified cyanobacterial mat material. Silicification in both cases occurred shortly after death within benthic cyanobacterial mats. Pore waters were alkali, silica‐saturated, high in ferric iron but low in oxygen and sulphate. Excess silica was likely derived from remobilized biogenic silica. The remarkable siliceous death mask preservation opens a new window on the environment and location of the Cambrian Explosion. This window closed with the appearance of abundant mat grazers later as the Cambrian Explosion intensified.  相似文献

One of the major contributions of Alcide d’Orbigny to palaeontology is his work on the Danian of the Paris Basin. The Danian material includes well-preserved external imprints of Invertebrates. By making casting of these imprints, Alcide d’Orbigny inaugurated an original technique, which enabled him to describe more than 40 species. The silicified Wenlockian bivalve shells at Möllbos have been fragmented to a considerable extent. Shells which were broken prior to silicification exhibit possible original shell layers while those which were fragmented during laboratory treatment show no primary structures. The fauna at Möllbos was attacked by endolithic micro-organisms. The borings of these were then coated with a carbonate envelope. After burial the unattacked original shell material was dissolved the envelope silicified. Later, empty moulds were subsequently filled with drusy calcite occasionally with quartz crystals. A third silicification went occurred at a later diagenetic stage when matrix had become lithified.  相似文献

Studies of human tooth wear have been carried on for the past two years using a machine designed to approximate human chewing motions. During this time wear patterns that resemble those frequently found on the teeth of various American Indian skulls have been produced on casts of the definition. Noticeably among these patterns produced are examples of wear on the front end of the dental arches that result in an edge to edge bite. This type of wear was produced by wearing down casts of a modern dentition with a “normal” overbite. The forces applied to the casts mounted on the machine are variable over a wide range and numerous force combinations are possible. By noting these forces and the resulting vectors, the motions necessary to produce different wear patterns can be determined. This has especially aided in understanding the ways in which the oblique molar wear is produced.  相似文献

目的研究西藏小型猪内脏铸型,对西藏小型猪在相关生物医学研究上的应用提供参考。方法应用过氯乙烯和牙托粉单独或混合填充剂灌注方法制作西藏小型猪心脏、肝脏、脾脏、肺脏、肾脏和脑铸型研究其血管分布规律。结果西藏小型猪内脏铸型外观完整美观,保持正常解剖状态、位置,充分显示和暴露主干的分支分布,各管道饱满,管道粗细适当,标本色泽鲜艳。结论通过单独或混合灌注过氯乙烯和牙托粉填充剂可以成功制作西藏小型猪铸型标本,所做标本显示的脏器血管分布情况对相关生物医学研究具有重要应用价值。  相似文献

A minimally diseased (mean intimal thickness = 56 microns) human aortic bifurcation was replicated in rigid and compliant flow-through casts. Both casts were perfused with physiological flow waves having the same Reynolds and unsteadiness numbers; the pulse pressure in the compliant cast produced radial strains similar to those expected from post-mortem measurements of the compliance of the original tissue. The compliant cast was perfused with a Newtonian fluid and one whose rheology was closer to that of blood. Wall shear rate histories were estimated from near-wall velocities obtained by laser Doppler velocimetry at identical sites in both casts. Intimal thickness was measured at corresponding sites in the original vessel and linear regressions were performed between these thicknesses and several normalized shear rate measures obtained from the histories. The correlations showed a positive slope--that is, the intima was thicker at sites exposed to higher shear rates--consistent with earlier results for relatively healthy vessels, but their significance was often poor. There was no significant effect of either model compliance or fluid rheology on the slopes of the correlations of intimal thickness against any normalized shear rate measure.  相似文献

Identification of the primary constituents of small shelly fossil (SSF) shells is important for explaining the evolution of SSF faunas. The characteristics and constituents of Terreneuvian tubular SSFs found in north‐east Sichuan, China, are revealed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. Petrographic thin sections indicate that the chemical composition of the shells is mainly calcium carbonate with smaller amounts of phosphorus, silica and pyrite. Most of the tubular shells composed of calcium carbonate have a distinct layered structure. Evidence of replacement of the original shell by phosphatization, pyritization and silicification, and recrystallization of calcium carbonate have been found, all of which destroyed the shell's original layered structure. Most fossils treated with acetic acid are phosphatic casts or steinkerns, with some preserving organic textures of the shell as phosphatic casts. We conclude that the Terreneuvian tubular SSFs from north‐east Sichuan were originally composed mainly of calcium carbonate; indeed, most Terreneuvian small skeletal fossils appear to have had an originally calcareous composition. The fossil casts or internal core fossils are composed of phosphate, which is related to local taphonomic processes.  相似文献

The Triassic to Recent fossil record of the dinoflagellates is represented overwhelmingly by geologically resistant, organic-walled, non-motile resting cysts; such cysts are formed following the sexual phase in the life cycle. Very few confirmed records exist of the motile stage being preserved in the fossil record. This paper reports the occurrence of two very unusual dinoflagellate taphofacies, one developed in bituminous shales and the other in micrites, from the Oligocene fossil Lagerstätte at Sieblos, Hesse, Germany. A new dinoflagellate taxon, Sieblososphaera martini sp. nov. has been identified through analysis of dissociated skeletal elements in the bituminous shales and external moulds and casts in the micrites. The unique preservation of these fossils confirms them not only as primary biogenically silicified motile thecate cells, but also indicates that there was a much greater range of tabulation present within the subfamily Lithoperidiniaceae than has hitherto been recognized.  相似文献

Tests are still lacking about the suitability of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular resin casts to show different functional states of peripheral blood vessels. With the aid of a vitalmicroscopic device, we tried to elaborate a vascular casting method using the model of the albino rat iris vasculature. Functional variations of the vasculature were induced by local application of epinephrine to one eye using the untreated fellow eye as a control. It was found that if our modification of Araldite plastic is injected via a systemic access and without preceding rinsing with fixatives or salt solutions there is a good correlation between the vessel diameters seen in SEM of resin casts and the vessel diameters found in the vitalmicroscopic observations. Thus, this method appears also suitable for studying the effect of vasoactive substances.  相似文献

The anatomy and morphometry of venous values associated with the vasculature of the head of the duckling were studied using vascular corrosion casting and scanning electron microscopy. All valves encountered were bicuspid, and casts typically exhibited slight expansions at valve sinuses and deep slits at the sites of valve leaflets. The locations, numbers, and orientations of endothelial nuclei on all surfaces of the valves were clearly revealed by imprints in the casting resin. Endothelial cell densities were significantly higher on the surfaces of valve leaflets (about 10 cells/1,000 micron2) than on other venous surfaces (about 7 cells/1,000 micron2). Endothelial nuclei on the medial surface of the valve leaflet were oriented parallel to the long axis of the vessel, whereas those on the lateral surface were oriented perpendicular to that axis. The close proximities of valves in some vessels and the presence of anomalies such as the sharing of leaflets by adjacent valves were readily demonstrated with the corrosion-casting techniques. These methods provide a useful means for studying the fine, three-dimensional details of venous valve anatomy.  相似文献

Workers in ferrous foundries show increased risk of lung cancer. In the steel casting process hot metal is poured into sand moulds solidified with organic binders, producing a plume of smoke containing a variety of organic compounds and showing strong mutagenicity in the Salmonella/S9 assay. We have collected the emissions produced when steel is poured into an experimental sand mould solidified with oil, clay and cereal, a widely used binder system. The organic constituents of these emissions have been fractionated by preparative reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mutagenic fractions have been analysed by capillary column gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Of the 65 compounds for which mass spectra are reported, 54 have been tentatively identified as alkyl derivatives of polycyclic aromatic compounds. Many compounds of this class are known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. In addition, several unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including the carcinogenic benz[a]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene, were found to be present.  相似文献

Films of chitosan and gelatin were prepared by casting their aqueous solutions (pH≈4.0) at 60°C and evaporating at 22 or 60°C (low- and high-temperature methods, respectively). The physical (thermal, mechanical and gas/water permeation) properties of these composite films, plasticized with water or polyols, were studied. An increase in the total plasticizer content resulted in a considerable decrease of elasticity modulus and tensile strength (up to 50% of the original values when 30% plasticizer was added), whereas the percentage elongation increased (up to 150% compared to the original values). The low-temperature preparation method led to the development of a higher percentage renaturation (crystallinity) of gelatin which resulted in a decrease, by one or two orders of magnitude, of CO2 and O2 permeability in the chitosan/gelatin blends. An increase in the total plasticizer content (water, polyols) of these blends was found to be proportional to an increase in their gas permeability.  相似文献

Taphonomic analysis of Lower and Middle Oxfordian ammonites from the Cracow Upland, southern Poland (localities at Pod???e, Zalas, M?ynka) revealed differences in ammonite preservation. The studied ammonites, usually termed as external and internal moulds, show a more complex state of preservation. In the Middle Oxfordian glauconitic marls, ammonites are preserved as internal moulds with neomorphic calcite shells showing relics of the original internal structure. In the Middle Oxfordian platy peloidal limestones, ammonites are preserved mostly as external moulds, without septal suture, however under microscope might show relics of internal whorls and septa and/or subtle differences in sediment filling phragmocone chambers. In sponge–microbial bioherms and biostromes, ammonite internal moulds have shells, which in contrast to ammonites from glauconitic marls are not strictly neomorphic ones, but originated by shell dissolution and subsequent filling of moldic porosity by calcite cement. In sponge–microbial nodular limestones, the ammonites are strongly deformed and the outer wall is usually removed by dissolution under pressure. Other important taphonomic differences include the rate of compaction (highest in platy limestones), sedimentary infillings, microborings, encrustations and preservation of siphuncular tubes. The majority of the ammonites appear to be phragmocones; aptychi in all facies are rare. Siphuncular tubes are fossilized exclusively in oppeliids, only in specimens from glauconitic marls and platy limestones, although their other taphonomic attributes are different. Tubes seem to have fossilized due to microbially mediated phosphatization that could be favoured by a set of parameters which operated rather at the scale of ammonoid carcasses: closed, poorly oxygenated conditions, and reduced pH. Taphonomic processes were controlled by the sedimentary environment (fragmentation, sedimentary filling, phosphatization of siphuncular tubes), as well as by early and late diagenesis (neomorphic transformation, dissolution, cementation, compaction) influenced by lithology.  相似文献

Wood-based composites such as oriented strand board (OSB) are principle framing elements in building construction in North America. However, these materials are often affected by moulds in wet or humid environmental conditions. A common control method for prevention of mould growth on panels is preservative treatment of panels with various pesticides or chemicals. In recent years, environmentally friendly pest control methods are required because of environmental issue. This research aimed to develop a biological technology to protect OSB against mould infection by post-treatment of panels with natural extracts from fungal antagonists. In this study, the culture metabolites of a fungal antagonist, Phaeotheca dimorphospora DesRochers & Ouellette, were extracted, and the antibiotic activity of the extracts was tested in Petri plates against various moulds and decay fungi. The OSB panels were then dip-treated with the extracts and exposed to a humid environment for mould growth testing in a period of 8 weeks. The results showed that the mycelia growth of all fungi tested (moulds, white-rot and brown-rot fungi) was inhibited by the extracts of P. dimorphospora on agar plates. Panel samples dipped with the fungal extracts in acetone got little mould growth on them, whereas untreated control panels and those samples treated with acetone alone were seriously affected by various moulds.  相似文献
